I’m the type of person that likes to know how things work. I like learning and the thrill of figuring out a new skill. Plu s, being able to speak intellige ntly on a subject is an added bonus. INDUSTRIAL CHIC An old warehouse in Atlanta’s historic Castleberry District, The Wiley provides the perfect blank canvas for the non-traditional couple’s wedding celebration. Castleberry Hill is an old industrial loft community in downtown Atlanta with a beautiful landscape perfect for unique photographs. We wanted the style to be perfect for a couple seeking a nontraditional wedding, set in an urban city neighborhood.

FIELD OF DREAMS Kissed by the golden glow of a Georgia sunset, this style profile resurrects the beauty of the Old South for new generations to enjoy. Surrounded by a sea of shimmering wheat, this scene’s old plantation furniture, bright flowers, and assortment of vintage and modern details causes the romance of the past and the present to gloriously collide.

This shoot was set in a wheat field to have an overall mood of warm earthy tans. With vibrant pops of Pantone Colors including Samba and Acai from the 2013 predictions and Placid Blue, Cayenne, and Violet Tulip from the 2014 predictions. This mix of bright colors draws the viewer into its beauty in the midst of the mellow mood of the soft tan field.

FLOWERS Daylilies in warm peach, red, and yellow hues, purple allium, oatleaf hydrangeas, soft blue variegated hydrangeas, succulents, stokes aster, and wheat to bring in a seasonal touch. Double stain into a martini glass or a large coupe glass and garnish with a slice of cucumber and a fresh raspberry.

BESTIES LUNCHEON Brides, before you walk down the aisle to say "I do," show some love to your lady friends with a special bridesmaids luncheon. A lovely afternoon of reminiscing and memory-making with your girlfriends as you dine from delicate china plates, your surroundings swathed in sunlight and a pretty palette of gold, ivory, and purple . . . Tell me, what could be sweeter?

THEME "Besties". With the setting being a bridesmaid luncheon and tea, I really wanted to highlight friendship and all of the girly, playful goodness that goes with it!

Since Radiant Orchid is the color of the year I wanted to show ways to tie it into the color scheme while still having an aesthetic that is soft and lovely. The combination of Radiant Orchid, lavender, mint, and gold seemed to strike that balance and looked great in the 6ft custom installation, flowers, and other details.

PERFECT FOR Any bride who wants to spend some time loving on her best friends! Although I chose to highlight southern charm in this shoot, it is not only for the southern bride. This concept can be recreated to fit any group of girlfriends.

SIGNATURE COCKTAIL I chose to stick with the color scheme, serving a purple custom cocktail that was lovingly labeled the "Berry Bestie Mojito". This is a traditional Mojito with 1 oz. of lavender syrup added to give it its purple hue. Throw in some blueberries for garnish and voila!

WHAT TO WEAR The dresses featured in this shoot are by local designer Camilyn Beth. Adding in some sparkle is always a great idea!

TAKE IT UP A NOTCH A bride can take this shoot as a starting point and really make it her own. Instead of hosting this at home, maybe have it at a great hotel and enjoy a spa or pool day following lunch.


ITEMS TO INCORPORATE I focused on bringing in traditional southern charm in ways that were unexpected. I feel this was achieved by using monogrammed bows in place of escort cards, having a custom invite that was equal parts sassy and gorgeous, and models wearing stunning dresses by local designer Camilyn Beth with custom clutches by local designer Oatmeal Lace. As well as a private residence for the venue location, lush linens, and vintage furniture and china rentals. All this tied together gave the elegant yet playful feel of the south that a lunch like this warrants!

THINGS TO REMEMBER This luncheon was held outside so keep in mind the time of year when recreating this event. This luncheon was set in the spring but could easily take place in summer or early fall - weather permitting!

Some couples send out email blasts and use social media to get the word out. Just make sure you include as much information as you can to help your guests start planning if they are traveling from out of state.

WHAT DOES VENUE RENTAL TYPICALLY INCLUDE? In general, most spaces includes interior tables and chairs, the setup and cleanup of that included furniture, and the venue’s event manager. Cultural attractions usually include at least some of their exhibits, galleries, displays, etc. The Atlanta History Center also includes security, complimentary parking and a rain backup because it’s an easy amenity for us to offer and we hope these added values help with a bride’s venue selection. IS WORKING WITH A VENUE THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE CATERING MORE COMPLICATED? Not usually. Using a venue’s approved vendors can be seamless since they know the venue so well and work closely with the venue’s staff. IS IT MORE EXPENSIVE TO CHOOSE A VENUE WITH NO ONSITE CATERING? In my experience, weddings of certain budget level and range can happen in either kind of venue. However, hotels may not have a rental fee for the ballroom if you meet the requirements of a sleeping room block or food and beverage minimum, but the cost of that food and beverage may wind up being more than what is charged at a venue that doesn’t include catering since you can shop different caterers. DOES THE VENUE OFFER ASSISTANCE WHEN SELECTING/WORKING WITH OFFSITE CATERERS? The event staff can offer multiple suggestions depending on the bride’s needs, but we are fair to all of our caterers and not just recommend ones. WHAT ABOUT THE BAR? DOES THE VENUE PROVIDE THAT OR THE CATERER? The venue will handle the beverage service if they have an alcohol license, but there are some venues that allow brides to handle beverage themselves or by their chosen caterer.

WHAT ABOUT THINGS LIKE PLATES AND UTENSILS? DOES THE VENUE SUPPLY THAT OR AN OFFSITE CATERER? OR ANOTHER VENDOR? Caterers provide all of those things; some venues do offer glassware when providing beverage service, but not all. WHY DO YOU SUGGEST HIRING FROM THE "PREFERRED VENDORS" LIST? They know the venue so well versus a vendor that has never worked at the venue before. Our vendors know us so well they do site tours and truly act as an extension of our sales force. WILL THE VENUE AND CATERING COMPANY COMMUNICATE TOGETHER ABOUT MY WEDDING OR WILL I BE THE MIDDLE MAN? Venues with approved lists communicate and work together very well. Also, there is normally a meeting at the venue with all vendors to go over the wedding details together. Of course, wedding planners are always recommended to coordinate all of our wedding needs. WHAT ELSE DO BRIDES NEED TO KNOW ABOUT RENTING VENUE SPACE? Remember, Not all venues provide wedding ceremony coordination. Outside furniture may not be included. And, when having outdoor events realize that there is no guarantee of the condition of grass, flowers, plants, etc.

So, exactly what type of Occasion do you envision for your upcoming wedding? Knowing this will ease your venue search because the setting affects the overall style tremendously. Not to mention the budget! In the southeast, the options for brides are limitless. From country clubs to hotels, city clubs, oceanfront resorts, farms, barns, antebellum homes, private mansions and everything in between... a girl's got options. So, we've scoured the top cities to bring you the very best venues to select from.

QUESTIONS TO ASK A POTENTIAL VENUE . . . HOW MANY HOURS DOES MY RENTAL FEE INCLUDE? ARE THERE OVERTIME CHARGES? Some venues charge by the hour for use of their facility. Knowing exactly how many hours are included, and alloting plenty of time for set up and tear down is important.

HOW DO YOU CHARGE? PER PERSON, BY THE HOUR OR FLAT FEE? Always good to know how your venue charges for rental. It's likely that facilities who include catering will charge a per person rate and venues without catering will charge a flat fee or hourly rental.

CAN I BRING IN MY OWN VENDORS OR DO I HAVE TO USE A PREFERRED VENDOR LIST SUPPLIED BY THE VENUE? Many venues will supply you with a list of their preferred wedding vendors to use. This can be helpful to the bride who needs direction and referrals but also a hinderance for brides who know exactly which vendors they'd like to use. Clarify with your venue whether it's required or not to use their specfied vendors before you book.

CAN I BRING IN MY OWN ALCOHOL? Venues that don't carry their own liquor license often allow brides to bring in their own alcohol. This is not typically the norm, but there are a few venues out there with this option. Remember, if you do opt to bring in your own alcohol, you'll want to hire a bar service to tend to guests.

HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL THE SPACE HOLD (NOT JUST OFFICIAL CAPACITY) ACCORDING TO MY ROOM SET UP. Your room set up will greatly effect the amount of guests you can have at your wedding. Official capacities are for the fire marshal. You'll want to focus on how many guests you can fit into the room with a seated dinner, estate table, dance floor or buffet set up.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE VENUE RENTAL? Most venues have house items that are included in the cost of their facility rental like dancefloors, tables, chairs, standard linens, etc. But, there are several venues that don't offer this and could amount to an additional cost to you. Ask before you book.

WHAT IS THE PARKING SITUATION? Valet parking, limited options, street parking or ample complimentary parking for guests are all important things to consider.

WILL THERE BE OTHER WEDDINGS HAPPENING ON THE SAME DAY? Depending on the size of the venue, it will be nice to know whether your event will be the only event happening on property or if there will be others. Other events may infringe on your time use of the venue or confusion for guests so best to know ahead of time and be prepared.

IF NOT, IS THERE AN ALCOHOL MINIMUM? Often venues with liquor licenses will have a bar minimum in addition to the cost of their venue rental. Best to have a heads up about this before you book for budgeting.

The posh and modern wedding of Meoka and Michael took place at W Atlanta - Midtown, the perfect sophisticated backdrop for the event they'd dreamed of. The ceremony took place in the ballroom, Meoka dressed in Vera Wang, escorted by her mother and brother. Her bridesmaids wore gowns of opal, her maid of honor in elegant purple, each dress designed by Jim Hjelm. Michael and his groomsmen complemented the ladies to perfection in tuxes by Vera Wang. Following the ceremony, guests were escorted to the top floor of the hotel where floor-to-ceiling windows displayed a breathtaking view of Midtown Atlanta. After the cocktail hour, guests were treated to a gourmet meal featuring dishes such as Seared Florida Gulf Snapper and Cumin Dusted Chicken. A four-tier wedding cake of strawberry and lemon flavors proved the perfect complement. The extraordinary talents of DJ SixFive got everyone onto the dance floor where Meoka and Michael danced the night away with their guests before setting off for a very glamorous happily-ever-after.

Kimberley and Nick said I do in the midst of the elegant romance of the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The black tie affair glowed with candlelight accented on all sides by pink roses and whimsical arrangements of flowers and plant life that brought the beauty of the gardens indoors from the ceremony to reception. The bride wore a trumpet-style Mori Lee gown with sweetheart neckline and a corset back. Her bridesmaids complemented her perfectly in sophisticated black, while Nick and his groomsmen were swoon-worthy in black tuxedo and suits. The reception started with the Hora, before guests enjoyed a dinner of seasonal fall delights including grilled apple salad and Chilean sea bass. A croquembouche of chocolate and vanilla filled puffs alongside a groom's cake of chocolate and chocolate ganache rounded out the meal. The brass band Simply Irresistible played throughout the evening, keeping guests on the dance floor from start to finish, enough choreographed dance moves at the ready to keep everyone well entertained. Kimberley and Nick took off for St. Lucia the next morning, happy-ever-after ahead of them.

When it comes to romance, Heidi and Kyle have got it in spades. From a picture-perfect Christmas Eve engagement, Kyle down on one knee in front of the glowing Christmas tree, to a midsummer night's dream wedding ceremony in the historic gardens of The Veranda, their love story is beautiful down to the last sparkling drop. The bride wore a mermaid gown, the ruched fabric ordained with rhinestones and pearls. Her bridesmaids wore navy chiffon dresses alongside groomsmen in gray tuxes and navy vests. The outdoor ceremony was a flawless combination of rustic and romantic, with peach roses and sweet gardenias, speckled with delicate touches of blue. The romance continued with a reception outside the historic inn. A gourmet meal by The Veranda, a beer and wine bar, and peach ice cream alongside a chocolate strawberry cake had guests smiling and happy. Everyone partied the night away on the dance floor lit by a sparkling chandelier and string lights, and as the celebration drew to an end, the bride and groom exited in style among the cheers of family and friends.

Warmth, light, and love abounded in the wedding celebration of Jennifer and David amid the elegance of the tree-shaded Big Canoe Chapel in the North Georgia Mountains. The November affair in the morning light glowed nearly as bright as Jennifer's smile as she walked down the aisle in a champagne Liancarlo gown toward her waiting groom. The flower girls wore dresses of white while the beige gowns of the bridesmaids exuded the warmth and simplicity of autumn. Natural decor awaited guests as they made their way to the reception. A hot chocolate bar, candy station, and a meal of Southern barbeque and nine different wedding cake flavors awaited guests. The local band Pioneer Chicken Stand played tunes that got everyone dancing, even breaking out a cover of Sting's "Fields of Gold" for Jennifer and David's first dance. After a sunset drive down the mountain that evening, the newlyweds hosted a party for their family and friends at the The Tavern of Wolfscratch Village before setting off for their honeymoon.

Ryan and Alex's October wedding at The Conservatory at Waterstone was a gorgeous celebration filled with love and laughter. Warm shades of grey and purple accented the autumn affair to perfection, while the natural beauty of the surroundings made for an effortless elegance from start to finish. Ryan wore an ivory fit and flare gown by Allure with a satin rouched waistband complete with Swarovski crystals. The gentlemen wore Vera Wang suits with ties that complemented the rich orchid of the bridesmaid’s gowns. The couple exchanged vows beneath a flower-draped arbor before celebrating their promises alongside their closest friends and family. Gourmet fare by Waterstone boasted dishes of parmesan crusted chicken and roast beef, pastas, mixed vegetables, and all manner of tasty goodies. The cake was layered red velvet and vanilla with decadent cream cheese frosting. DJ Dre 1800 provided tunes that had the place hopping well into the night until the newlyweds took their leave to cheers and well-wishes. The couple honeymooned aboard a cruise ship, stopping for adventure in Mexico, Honduras, and Belize.

There's nothing quite like a Southern garden wedding. Unless, of course, that wedding is in a garden at the bride's childhood home. Such was the case with Natalie and Hunter's grand affair with family and friends in attendance, the tree-shaded venue adorned with blue hydrangeas and glittering sunshine. The reception followed at the Piedmont Driving Club in Midtown Atlanta, where silkscreen images of the ceremony garden decorated the walls. Flowers of pale pink, white, and ivory blossomed atop tables bedecked in vibrant green. Guests were treated to a seated dinner of pan seared beef tenderloin, artichoke stuffed chicken, mushroom and spinach strudel, whipped potatoes, and an array of other delectable side dishes. A white wedding cake filled with vanilla mousseline, raspberry marmalade, and topped with white chocolate buttercream icing was the crowning jewel of the dessert menu. Atlanta Party Band played to the crowd throughout the night, the energy high, the memories unending. Natalie and Hunter left the reception bound for two weeks in beautiful Greece.

Brie wore a gown of ivory lace as she walked down the moss-draped aisle of the private St. Simons lawn on which she and Justin chose to celebrate their vows to one another. Justin smiled as he watched her approach, he and his groomsmen in grey suits, converse sneakers, and hidden super-hero t-shirts. The bright yellow of the sunflower bouquets each of the women carried hinted at the joy felt by those in attendance. The sun crept beneath the horizon as the couple each spoke "I do.” In a turn from the traditional beach theme, the newlyweds opted for a modern loft-style reception. Introductions were made and first dances were danced before friends and family enjoyed cuisine by Straton Hall Catering, including steak and chicken, mac ‘n' cheese, candied bacon and grilled peaches, salad, hamburger sliders — the food was absolutely mouthwatering. Island Sound had the room celebrating in no time, guests young and old visiting the dance floor to strike a move to their favorite tunes. Brie and Justin partied late into the night before taking their leave to ride off into happily-ever-after.

Southern vintage with personalized, hand-made details, this autumn wedding was a picture-perfect affair. Karley and Kody vowed to love one another forever on the grounds of the Horse Stamp Inn, the plantation-style bed and breakfast, the perfect combination of rustic details and simple elegance. The front lawn played host to three hundred guests, the couple’s two-year-old daughter among them, who gathered to watch the couple exchange their vows. Karley wore an Allure Couture strapless, fit and flare gown adorned with embroidery, Swarovski crystals, and a crystal-embellished belt. Her bridesmaids wore gowns of latte chiffon alongside groom and groomsmen in Calvin Klein tuxedos. The reception followed with Southern fare sure to please any palate, a wedding and groom's cake, and a s'mores bar for the kids. Family friend, DJ Rock, provided the entertainment, the party non-stop on the dance floor well into the night. Karley and Kody exited the scene beneath the glow of waving sparklers, Kody in jeans as he swept Karley off her feet and set off for their honeymoon.

Following a welcome cocktail, guests watched the bride walk down the aisle, escorted by her uncle to the tune of Train's “Marry Me.” She wore a gown of white with stunning accessories, sparkling Badgley Mischka heels, and a breathtaking veil. Heather and Crafton exchanged original vows and met the crowd as man and wife with a recessional walk to “Sweet Home Alabama.” Following formal introductions and a first dance, the reception broke into full swing with music by Breezin' Entertainment & Productions, modern decor and lounging accented by posh chevron designs and fresh tones of navy, white, and pink. Dinner was served at three stations boasting gourmet dishes of creative salads, short ribs, and an array of scrumptious delights. Jessica and Michael were married at Idlewild Baptist Church on a lovely autumn afternoon. Jessica walked down the aisle toward her smiling groom dressed in a dropped waist organza gown of white by Dennis Basso. Her bridesmaids wore mermaid gowns of fuchsia, the perfect complement to the tones of purple and silver used throughout the event. Following an intimate ceremony, the couple was whisked away in the back of a vintage Rolls-Royce for pictures, while guests rode a party bus to the reception hall for a cocktail hour. The newlyweds and their families were formally introduced and the reception kicked into full swing. Music by Inpulse Entertainment kept the party going from start to finish with dance sets between each course. Guests enjoyed a three-course meal followed by a wedding cake with multiple flavors to tempt every palate. Jessica and Michael danced the night away with their loved ones until making their grand exit and setting off for two romantic weeks in Hawaii.

The wedding ceremony of Amanda and Kevin was preceded by possibly the sweetest thing we've ever heard of: a first-look picnic, just the two of them, on the grounds of Cross Creek Ranch, where tall oaks and a rustic barn presided over the affair. The vows took place in the presence of dearest family and friends in an open-air chapel with vintage pews lining the aisle. The bride, wearing a 1920s style art deco gown, was escorted down the aisle by her mother and brother, friends singing along to the tune of “La Vie en Rose.� A cocktail hour of carnival-inspired goodies followed while Amanda and Kevin snuck away for photos. The bride changed into a reception gown with a shorter, fuller skirt covered in Swarovski crystals. The reception took place in the barn, rafters draped in lights and delicate decor. Candy, a s'mores station, cupcakes and a campfire pulled the vintage circus theme into the night, as well as a live circus performer who juggled and performed on stilts. A photo booth captured a slew of memories as the newlyweds enjoyed upscale carnival-inspired fare by Vesh. They danced late into the night before taking off for an adventurous happily-ever-after.

A formal, Gatsby-inspired affair, the wedding between Brittany and Christopher had just the right amount of 1920s glitz. The bride wore an A-line silk gown by Kelly Chase Couture while bridesmaids wore classic black dresses that perfectly matched the sophistication of the gentlemen’s tuxedos. Flowers of white and pink and fuchsia brought the look together. Following a heartfelt ceremony, guests adjourned to the cocktail hour where they found escort cards on purple ribbons hanging from the banyan tree in the center of a courtyard. Candlelight and plumes of white feathers and floral arrangements greeted guests inside for a glamorous reception. Handmade cigars on the patio and vintage tunes by Girl Meets Boy got the party started while guests enjoyed fare by Miromar Lakes including surf and turf entrÊes and an array of delectable goodies. A wedding cake of almond amaretto filled with luxurious black cherry filling topped off the meal. Brittany and Christopher danced and kissed the night away, their family and friends close beside them.

The wedding between Megan and Aaron was one part preppy, two parts Southern, a sophisticated party through and through. The stylish event paid homage to a 60s monogram vibe with bold shades of navy and pink accents throughout. The couple said their vows at St. Thomas Episcopal Church followed by a lively reception at the Renaissance Vinoy in downtown St. Petersburg. Megan was stunning in a Lazaro gown with to-die-for sparkling heels and a clutch by Kate Spade. Aaron wore a grey suit and pink argyle socks in a sweet complement to the bride's bouquet. An array of passed hors d'oeuvres followed by surf ‘n’ turf cuisine had guests talking about the food for weeks after the event. Wedding cake reminiscent of the bride’s gown was enjoyed by all and dancing soon followed, lasting well into the night before culminating in a group dance to the song "Wagon Wheel.” The newlyweds exited the hotel in the back of Aaron's electric blue 1965 Mustang, coke cans flashing behind the getaway car, Maui and happily-ever-after ahead.

The wedding of Johanna and Ryan was celebrated at The Conference Center at the Main Library in modern style, some of the couple's favorite Southern flair shining through. The Jacksonville skyline served as the perfect backdrop for the newlyweds to party the night away with their closest family and friends. Accents of bright orange brought the joyful aesthetics to life with vibrant flowers, citrus leaves, and locally grown oranges used throughout. Custom bottles of Old Tom Gin and Tonic cocktails proved a huge success, as the guests dined from vintage china, enjoying dishes of chicken and waffles, baked apples, fried green tomatoes and other Southern fare. A pie buffet proved to be the perfect wedding dessert. Johanna wore a custom silk dress by Janna Dudey as she danced with her husband to the original song "Butterbean" by The Afterwhile. It was a magical night that saw the couple off in a shower of smiles and well-wishes, a romantic mini-moon in New York City bright on the horizon.

The sweet autumn wedding between Savannah and Brian at Eden Gardens State Park was enough to make anyone's heart flutter. The perfectly intimate wedding expressed the bride and groom's love for one another in a million little handcrafted ways, from the furry bridal party (their beloved dogs, Pudge and Yogi) to the cake topper carved to represent the couple even down to the most unique details. Pudge and Yogi boasted orange bow ties, while bright mums and natural fall greenery brought the autumn wedding theme to life. The bride designed every wedding detail, making for an unsurpassed experience of down-to-earth elegance and bridal grace. A butterfly release after the vows lent a magical air to the ceremony, before a reception of the bride and groom's favorite foods topped off with wedding cake and cupcakes by KaraBoo Bakery. Savannah even surprised Brian with his very own creamsicle flavored cake. Harp music by Katie Ott lent the perfect tone to the affair, the newlyweds swept up in the romantic atmosphere they'd dreamed of.

With a little bit of yin and yang (Hollie loves the ocean and Brandon is a mountain man) the two have perfected the art of a balanced relationship. Here they give us the 411 on their wedding day and advice on balancing the true meaning of a wedding with all the surface details.

2007 ABOUT OUR WEDDING "Our wedding was a tropical coast DIY with a deep spiritual focus. We were working with a tight budget so making things ourselves was the way we were able to include some of the most personal details to the day. By the time we had hand-glued the 25th starfish to the invitation's burlap ribbon, we had a new appreciation for stationery designers. My mom made my dress and our reception was at our favorite restaurant, Perricone's Marketplace, in their open-air patio surrounded by tropical trees and flowers with a trellised ceiling wound by vines and candle lit lanterns. Food was served family-style and we danced the night away."

BEST ADVICE "Your wedding is one of the most personal and huge days of your life; make it special, bring your guests into the ceremony or reception by being yourselves and putting forth the extra effort to create an experience for you, your fiancĂŠ, your friends and family. Of course, you want to dance and celebrate, but maintaining that sense of sanctity is important; you'll carry that feeling and that foundation through the years, remembering it always. You can read your favorite poems, write your own vows, have friends share scripture readings . . . always know that an awesome and detail-packed wedding does not make the marriage. It's the vows, promises, and love that do."
