INSPIRATION
BY EVELYN SOMERS The spiny butterfly ray is endangered. Mainly due to illegal fishing, as well as ending up as by-catch. To protect them, signs from the municipalities can be found on certain beaches:
"DURING SUMMER, BUTTERFLY RAYS COME TO THIS BEACH TO MATE, PLEASE RESPECT THEM AND GIVE THEM SPACE".
"During summer, butterfly rays come to this beach to mate, please respect them and give them space. Some females are pregnant, so they are especially vulnerable. They spend most of their time buried under the sand".
Ana Seco Durán is an artist, based on Tenerife. Her work (https://www.anaseco.com/ ). During a holiday in Pasito Blanco (Gran Canaria) she noticed some kids harassing a ray. At this point, there was no sign explaining the special occurrence of rays. Ana decided to design and pay for a sign herself! You can now find her sign on this beach (picture to the right).

MAREK
BRON
EXOTIC WORK
Can you present yourself and why you ended up in the canary islands for a longer period.
I’m a travel blogger at Indie Traveller (www.indietraveller.co), a blog that I’ve been doing full-time for 8 years now. I’m based in Europe and often find myself traveling to distant places in Asia or South America, but the pandemic had me looking closer to home for somewhere to spend the winter. My choice to go to the Canary Islands really came down to ‘where can I go right now that has good weather and fun things to do?’. I was looking for a destination that I could write about for Indie Traveller, but where my girlfriend (who is an IT consultant) could also work remotely from. The Canaries were an obvious choice. We worked and traveled in the Canaries for almost two months. I didn’t know much about the archipelago before coming, but it really exceeded my (our!) expectations.

Where would you go next time you come back?
It’s still on my wishlist to visit El Hierro, the most remote island of the Canaries. We were told the internet is not very good there, so we skipped it this time, but it’s definitely on the list for a nonwork trip.

"THE THING I’M MOST PROUD OF HAVING CREATED!" If you’re interested in the nomad lifestyle, or if you just always wanted to go on a longer trip, then I also recommend checking out my book, Travel the World Without Worries (https://indietraveller.co/book/). This is the thing I’m most proud of having created! I wrote the first edition after I did a 2-year trip around the world because I wanted to help others get inspired and fired up to follow their travel dreams. This could mean combining travel with remote work, or perhaps going on a bigger journey, or to a destination you might not have considered before.
