"This award winning film profiles surfer Léa Brassy, who grew up in northern France. By the time she was 17, she moved to southern France for the warm water surf. Accustomed to a life on the road, her nomadic lifestyle takes a pause at the Unstad break in the Lofoten Islands in Northern Norway. Trading in her bikini for a thick wetsuit, she connects with the surrounding mountains, Arctic surf, and simple living. Whether it’s paddling hard for a wave, or chasing after a passion - Léa reminds us that if the timing is right, we have to Catch it."

SURF ARCTIC

Present yourself and your link to the Ocean.

Ever since I was little I have loved the sea. Swim, play, be in the water. My parents always said I was like a fish and was more underwater than above if I could. I started surfing 5-6 years ago, after I moved to Lofoten, and that love returned again to a very large extent. I am concerned about pollution, plastic in the sea and how we humans live our lives which means that the animals below the sea surface is affected. So, it has become more and more important for me to live in a way where I contribute back. And try as best I can to leave as few footprints as possible.

INTERVIEW

Why is Unstad so special?

Unstad is special for several reasons:

«IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE WEATHER IN LOFOTEN, WAIT 10 MINUTES»

1 .There are world class waves (consistent) with a

of the world. 2. It is cold water surfing (which for many seems

far-fetched, since most people associate surfing with the sun, heat and beer at sunset). This helps to keep the number of people in the water down. 3. The backdrop in Lofoten is ABSOLUTELY

MAGICAL! Sea and mountains in dramatic formation and light that takes the breath away from most people.

Best season for surfing and photographing?

Best surf is definitely in the fall and winter. Which is also when we, most often, have the worst and coldest weather! There is a saying in Lofoten that goes: "If you do not like the weather in Lofoten, wait 10 minutes", and it is quite well described. We can quickly have all 4 seasons in half an hour in the North. The light changes, wind turns and the season gives and takes. Photography is beautiful and good all year round, and each season provides its own light, its own waves, its own atmosphere and its own motifs.

INTERVIEW

“LARGE SET ROLLED IN, PERFECT, CLEAN. AND WITH A MAGICAL EVENING LIGHT, THAT ONLY LOFOTEN CAN DELIVER"

Do you have a special memory to share?

One night I remember particularly well was an autumn day maybe two years ago, when I took pictures. It was the most magical day I have ever experienced. Large set rolled in, perfect, clean. And with a magical evening light, that only Lofoten can deliver. At unstad we have a right wave, a left and something fun in the middle. The right one works less often than the others on an optimal day. But this day, the right side was in fire! So, at the same time as the waves turned into perfect formations and tubed until there was no more sunlight left, the sky alternated between yellow, orange, blue, purple and ill-red colors in the sky. MAGIC!

Though they often frequent cold, coastal waters, orcas can be found from the polar regions to the Equator. They're at the top of the food chain and have very diverse diets, feasting on fish, penguins, and marine mammals such as seals, sea lions, and even whales, employing teeth that can be four inches long.

"IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN WHALES, THEN YOU FIRST AND FOREMOST SHOULD BE INTERESTED IN HERRING. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE HERRING HERE".

Where should you go to experience Orcas in Northern Norway? A few years ago, Tysfjord was the obvious answer. But then something happened. The herring changed their migration route, and final winter destination. They chose fjords further north. Click on the article to the right. And read more about this arctic experience.

Present yourself and your link to the Ocean.

My name is Mats S. Birkelund. I am a filmmaker based in Lofoten. I live here because of the sea. I'm originally from Eastern Norway, far away from the sea and waves, but we spent every summer on the Oslo Fjord. Water sports and fishing were favorite activities. When I discovered surfing, there was no going back. Had to live by the sea. When is the best time to visit Lofoten?

There are two different types of weather I love with And if there are waves and a good swell - it's magical. Otherwise, I think it's incredible with storms. Especially surfable storms with heavy

environment in Lofoten. Usually, surf movies in the Arctic are about famous surfers, from warm areas, who travel and visit the cold places. I wanted to show off those who live and surf in cold water every day. Hopefully I get funding to produce more of it.

"Lofoten Islands is more than a popular travel destination. More than a spectacular PR-stunt. It's more than Mick Fanning, Chris Burkard, northern lights and clichés. For some people, Lofoten is the normal life. The closest wave. The every day life. Because when most people go home, someone always stays."
