INTERVIEW WHALE ACOUSTICS

From egg to plate, there’s a unique story to be told, a unique journey to be made, and I am here to help you tell it to the world.

I have been living in Norway for over 10 years and working on finding new ways to use autonomous vehicles to study whale behavior and distribution.

Fish eyes on a plate? Not a new thing in some cultures. But for some, it might appear "exotic". A positive, and hopefully longlasting aim in the kitchen: How to use more of the marine resources.

Many hundreds of million of people live close to the Ocean. And many more rely on its marine resources. Sustainability is a key word. Many coastal communities have developed sustainable practices to maintain their livelihood. The "jeju community" is one. The women divers harvest by hand, and only take what they need.

SEA PANTRY

Can you present yourself & your Ocean link.

My passion and specialty focuses on sustainable aquaculture. I think it came from my love of the oceans and the legacy that I had from my mother’s family and their 4th generation family farm in rural Colorado. I believe sustainable aquaculture is the future of fish and seafood and the only way to ensure healthy, ocean-friendly marine proteins in the future. I have experienced the challenges and victories at every level of the supply chain, and I and make them recognizable by not only industry leaders, but consumers as well. From egg to plate, there’s a unique story to be told, a unique journey to be made, and I am here to help you tell it to the world. My journey, like so many others, comes layered with experience. WHALE SOUND

Can you present yourself and your Ocean link.

I’m Sofia Aniceto and I am a marine biologist. I grew up in Portugal, playing on the rocky shores and looking for hermit crabs. I have been living in Norway for over 10 years and working on finding new ways to use autonomous vehicles to study whale behavior and distribution. What is your nr. 1 ocean memory?

I guess that would be when I was doing visual surveys onboard a ferry transiting between southern the bridge just before sun rise, but the weather was rough, and I was seriously considering going back to sleep. I stayed a bit longer just to see if some animals would show up and talked to the crew for a while. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, a fin whale breached Photographer: Sofia Aniceto
