The people who make your resort experience special share their own memorable vacations, travel tips and upcoming getaways.

Where is your hometown and what's the best thing about it? I come from a city in the eastern part of France called Nancy (about a two-hour drive from Paris). It is the hometown of the Art Nouveau architectural movement from the early 1900s. There is also a gorgeous square considered the most beautiful in France. It’s called “Place Stanislas.”

Tell us about your role at Weekapaug Inn. Since September 2021, I’ve served as Director of Food and Beverage, working directly with Executive Chef Andrew Brooks and his team as well as the entire dining room team. Given your job in luxury hospitality, how do you choose where to vacation? As I often engage with guests, I write down the name of a suggested destination and the best time of year to visit. Must-have travel item? My phone, to take pictures everywhere I go. Plus, everything is in it: Google maps, Google for information about the sites, and the translator app is helpful, too.

Describe a favorite vacation. Last summer, I did a great road trip in Italy with a fabulous car. Italian, of course. Red of course. What’s your travel-related guilty pleasure? I enjoy good food, so I might extend my stay just to try a recommended restaurant. Where are your top travel spots for food and wine? I left France when I was young, so I go there regularly. The variety offered in different parts of France with wines, cheese and regional dishes is fantastic. You can enjoy great wines in Bordeaux, fresh seafood in Brittany and amazing cheeses with culinary specialties in every single city.

What’s your favorite Relais & Châteaux property? Château d’Artigny—just south of Paris. I was there three years ago and had a fabulous time! Where are you headed on your next trip? Probably to Corsica, an island in the South of France. Name your go-to song lists for a long trip. 1. Soundtrack of the movie The Beach, which was shot in Thailand close to Phuket. I listened to the soundtrack while walking that beach. Wow, I still have goosebumps! 2. Michael Jackson—any of his music. I met him at L’Orangerie, the restaurant I managed for many years in Los Angeles. I was able to talk with him one-on-one, so I cherish this memory. 3. Calogero: a contemporary French singer who writes beautiful melodies with awesome lyrics.

Tell us about your role at Watch Hill Inn. As the Manager of Watch Hill Inn, I oversee the daily operations of the Inn, as well as its associates, and most importantly, our guests. My biggest responsibility is to ensure our guests are having a wonderful experience and creating unforgettable memories! How do you choose your vacation destinations? Younger Shannan would have said anywhere with a beach! Nowadays, with children in tow, we choose places with fun activities, convenient dining and family accommodations. What’s your favorite Relais & Châteaux property? Favorite I have stayed at: Weekapaug Inn. However, my bucket list Relais & Châteaux property is Lake Placid Lodge in the Adirondacks, New York.

Do you have any special music for long trips? I love music. My go-to playlist right now is majority '90’s to 2000’s hip-hop and pop. I have overpacked, underpacked, and thrown everything in a bag at the last minute. This has taught me to pack early and sensibly— but when in doubt, pack the bathing suit! I lost my luggage once, and it took three days to get it. Never will I ever land without a back-up outfit.

What's the best thing about living in Stonington, CT? I love the borough and all the history, the simplicity, restaurants, views, shops, waterfront and museums. I could go on and on! Describe a favorite vacation. Scotland. I got to travel through Glasgow up to the highland of Loch Lomond, stopping in Edinburgh and Sterling, touring castles along the way. It was incredible. What’s your travel-related guilty pleasure? Fish and chips! The best I've had are at Waxy O’Connor’s in Glasgow, Scotland. Also, I never leave a place without purchasing a souvenir magnet. Where are you headed on your next trip? France. We promised our children we’d take them anywhere they want when they graduate high school. Our two oldest picked France. We’re planning a 10-day trip from Paris to Normandy. Name the top places on your travel bucket list. Norway. I want to witness the Aurora Borealis firsthand. I also want to visit the western side of Ireland, traveling shoreline to mountain side.

What are your top three vacation essentials? 1) An excellent book. I am currently reading Aesthetic Intelligence by Pauline Brown. 2) My laptop. I value my time with my family above all, but a chance for an intimate getaway with my husband is essential to keep our peace of mind due to our demanding professions. Where’s your hometown and the best thing thing about it? My hometown lies in the Catskills mountains of New York. Walton is a quaint blue-collar town of 3,000 residents where the outdoors is a way of life. I grew up hunting and fly fishing with my family. When I wasn’t indulging in the outdoors, I was learning to fly from the many small country airstrips that dot the rural New York landscape. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve seen on a trip? Diving in the West Caicos Marine National Park off the coast of Turks and Caicos. The underwater scenery was breathtaking, but what struck me was the proximity to the continental shelf. The depths of the dives are usually in the 60-foot range, but to see the drop-offs into the thousands of feet is unforgettable. Name the one place that tops your travel bucket list. My dream would be to explore the Italian coastline under sail with a destination in the little town of Portofino on the Italian Riviera.

CREATIVE CUISINE Ocean House adds dinner service to outdoor dining venues

F

resh eyes, fresh breezes and fresh places enhance the awe-inspiring beauty of the Ocean House property on the Rhode Island coast. For spring and summer, Ocean House debuts two new outdoor dining venues, Dalia by Dantòn Valle, a Mexican restaurant serving lunch and dinner on the Seaside Terrace, and Théa, a casually elegant Mediterranean taverna on Dune Cottage’s deck. Bloom: The Sipping Terrace at Ocean House has expanded, offering pre- and postdinner cocktails, and a view of the sun setting over the bay. And the Veuve Clicquot Secret Garden has an updated look and menu. “We’re very excited about our new outdoor

dining,” says Gabrielle Clark, Ocean House Collection Group Director of Food and Beverage Operations. “The setting is so beautiful, especially in the evenings with lanterns flickering.” Clark adds, “We took notes on what guests enjoy most and what they would like, and we’ve revamped our offerings.” The beloved Verandah menu stays the same, as does Bistro and COAST (Chef William Rietzel of COAST was a finalist for James Beard Best Chef NE 2022, a coveted accolade). Ocean House’s culinary and beverage team were inspired by the property when creating new menus. The latest member of the team is Chef Dantòn Valle, chef de cuisine of seasonal

outlets. Chef Dantòn is well acquainted with seaside dining at five-star Relais & Châteaux resorts. He’s the former Executive Chef of Zadún, the Ritz-Carlton ultra-luxury suites on the coast of Cabo, Mexico. Meanwhile Jonathan Feiler, Group Beverage Director has created new drink menus for each venue. “That’s the fun part,” Feiler says, “Seeing how you can execute your ideas and adapt them for the best guest experience.”

Dune Cottage has been transformed into Théa, a Mediterranean restaurant serving casually elegant lunch and upscale dinners for resort guests and members. The lunch menu includes gyros, falafels and salads, along with simple beach fare like burgers, flatbreads and peanut butter and jelly for the younger set. Befitting its beachside location, Théa’s dinner menu features fresh-off-the-boat seafood. Grilled local sea bass with red pepper sauce makes a dramatic presentation. This contemporary, casual Mexican eatery opens up Ocean House’s Seaside Terrace for lunch and dinner. The first things guests notice is the view, a world-class expanse of dunes, beach and the shimmering Atlantic Ocean. Then there’s the food. Warm corn tortillas filled with pineapple-laced pork al pastor, crisp batter-fried fish or slow-cooked rib-eye. Paired with fresh slaws and salsas, it all comes together into the perfect, satisfying seaside bite. Fried tacos, filled with shredded chicken, are served over guacamole and crema. Tortilla soup is a zesty, colorful bowl of chicken broth loaded with diced tomatoes, charred avocado and crunchy strips of tortilla. Jarritos, the Mexican soda that comes in flavors like mandarin, lime and tamarind, is a nice day-time thirst-quencher and cocktail component. It adds flavored effervescence to the fresh-squeezed juices and tequila in Chef Dantòn’s palomas and margaritas. Michelada, the refreshing beer cocktail, is flavored with Ocean House’s signature bloody Mary mix and salty-sweet-spicy rims. Evening is time for serious sipping, and tequila, with its natural sweetness and range of fruity, floral and smoky flavors is featured. Feiler uses premium sipping tequilas, including extra cristalino añejo, aged five years, yet sparkling clear with a lighter, silky body. Guests can sample the smooth and smoky flavor of Tres Generaciones and toasty flavors of El Tesoro and Casa Dragones. After dinner drinks include Mexican coffee, flavored with coffee liqueur and tequila, and topped with whipped cream.

Call it happy hour, magic hour or cocktail hour, Ocean House has expanded the occasion. Guests want a place to relax over a refreshing drink at the end of the day, and Ocean House has the perfect place to do just that. While watching the sun set, guests enjoy signature cocktails featuring Sipsmith Dry London Gin, a small-batch distillery that has driven the gin renaissance. Smooth and rich with a balance of floral and herbal notes, Sipsmith elevates a classic G&T. Sipsmith also makes infused gins, like Lemon Drizzle Sipsmith, the base of an Ocean House original cocktail called “In the Weeds.” Guests love the balance of this blend of Lemon Drizzle Sipsmith Gin, fresh lime juice, house-brewed tarragon tea, simple syrup and yellow chartreuse. L

isa and Brian Kodzis have found their rhythm in life, and they spend part of each year at the Ocean House helping guests find their own rhythm out on the water, too. The husband-and-wife team hail from Westerly, Rhode Island, and for years have spent three months every winter on Oahu in Hawaii. They pack up their three kids and dog and head to the surfing mecca of the islands, where Brian surfs multiple times a day to train, and to get inspired by the latest techniques and gear. Lisa, who also teaches yoga, “her first love,” at Ocean House and in Hawaii, focuses on paddleboarding during the resort's high season. She’s been doing the sport long before most people in New England had ever heard of paddleboarding. “We were among the first people to bring it to the Watch Hill and Westerly area,” she says. “When we first tried to buy a paddleboard on the East Coast, they weren’t even selling them. We had to use makeshift long boards and make our own paddles.” Every year from Memorial Day Weekend

through the end of September, they bring their love of the water and board sports to Ocean House, leading activities that are offered for guests. They and their team of instructors work with guests of all ages and skill levels, and provide all the necessary equipment, for anyone who wants to try surfing or paddleboarding. There’s also the option of trying their latest interest, eFoiling, which is available to Ocean House guests 16 and older. “This will be our third summer offering it,” Lisa says of the eFoil, which has a foil (kind of like a vertical leg) beneath it that lifts the board and the rider up above the sea. “This is electric, so you have a remote control in your hand, and you fly out of the water. It’s a lot easier for beginners because you have more than just the propulsion of the wave. A lot of people enjoy that, and it’s a harder-to-find item. The boards themselves are quite expensive, so this is a great place to try it while you’re on vacation.” The beauty of the Ocean House setup, Lisa says, is that the Atlantic Ocean location makes it possible to try a little bit of everything.

“A lot of people think paddleboarding and surfing are the same, but they’re both unique. The eFoil is, too,” Brian and Lisa explain. “They each have their own element, their own form and technique. There’s something for everyone. They really are their own sports.” Having all kinds of surfboards, paddleboards and eFoils available lets Lisa, Brian and their staff tailor lessons to the individual guest’s experience level. As long as people can swim, Lisa says, they are welcome to participate. And for more athletic guests, new technology like the eFoil can offer a different kind of challenge. “For the advanced surfers, the eFoil is great because you don’t need much of a swell,” she says. “It’s perfect for advanced surfers who want to try something new. And it’s a learning curve, so you get hooked. Once you do one lesson, you want to do a couple more and master it.” The peak season for water-sports instruction runs from June through September. During that time, Lisa, Brian and their team are available from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week, unless it’s too stormy or rainy to be safe outside.

They encourage guests to sign up for lessons in advance, so they can prepare all the equipment in the correct size (think wetsuits for surfers, life jackets for kids and adults alike, and helmets for the eFoil riders). Ocean House guests can also ask for an on-the-spot lesson, Lisa says, and if there’s time in the schedule, her team will make a slot available. The reality, she adds, is that seeing other guests having so much fun out on the water simply becomes infectious along the beach. “It’s ideal if people sign up in advance, but usually what happens is that we’ll have a prebooked lesson, and then people will see it, and they start coming up to request lessons throughout the day,” she says. “But it’s best to prebook because things stack up, and we don’t want to have to say no because there aren’t enough instructors.” And, she stresses, just because she, Brian and the other instructors are all experts at these

water-sports activities doesn’t mean guests should worry that they will feel overmatched. Her team’s goal is to bring the best of everything they know to Ocean House guests who might be seeing or trying these kinds of boards for the first time. The team goes out of its way to be friendly and patient, no matter whether somebody is taking an on-land lesson just to get comfortable with how a surfboard feels, trying to stand up for the first time on a paddleboard in shallow water, or learning to surf on a long board with a new technique that Brian just picked up from the pros along the prime surf spots of Hawaii’s Seven Mile Miracle. “It shouldn’t be intimidating. Guests and groups are keen to learn the classic and social sport of croquet. At Ocean House, one of the most scenic spots is the Croquet Lawn perched above the Atlantic Ocean. Before that, he was at The Ritz-Carlton on Amelia Island, Florida, and for several years before that he was chef de cuisine at the Omni, also on the island. Fine dining at The Restaurant has expanded. A daily chef’s tasting menu guides guests on a culinary journey of coastal New England. The menu reflects the Inn’s philosophy of showcasing the products and flavors of Rhode Island and the Atlantic coast. Adds Brooks: “We want to surprise and delight our guests each time they dine with us.” The a la carte menu remains, with favorites like grass-fed rib eye steak in Bordelaise sauce and shellfish soup in tomato fennel broth with “soupy,” Westerly’s local soppressata.

The Garden Room

After dinner, guests and neighbors can order drinks at the bar in the Garden Room, which also serves

an elevated bar menu with local cheese and charcuterie boards, lobster rolls and lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Resort guests often have drinks and snacks delivered to the second floor lounge, a favorite spot for families to relax and play games.

SeaRoom

Every seat has a great view at the SeaRoom—a breathtaking expanse of blue water and sky on the shore off Quonnie Pond. This traditional casual seafood grill, with an outdoor kitchen, has two seating areas, a ground-level patio and a covered upper deck. It serves an all-day menu, starting at 11:30 a.m. to the last seating at 7 p.m.

No matter how warm and sunny the weather, most guests start with New England clam chowder. The recipe comes from Executive Sous Chef Chaz Paull, who grew up in Mystic. According to Brooks: “It’s a real traditional chowder, and it’s the best I’ve ever had.” Lobster rolls are another favorite. The hot buttered lobster is enriched with Vermont Creamery butter. The cheeseburger features Gulden Farms grass-fed beef, aged cheddar, crisp iceberg lettuce and ripe tomatoes on a brioche bun. Fried whole belly clams and spicy Rhode Island-style calamari, deep fried and tossed with hot cherry peppers, are guest favorites.

The Bathhouse

The Bathhouse, which serves guests enjoying the Inn’s pristine private beach on the Atlantic Ocean, has an exciting new menu inspired by an upgraded kitchen with a pizza oven. The chefs are firing up three signature hand-tossed pizzas featuring the finest ingredients. The traditional Margherita uses local tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil picked from the Inn’s herb garden. White clam pie is a regional favorite, and Chef Andrew adds sweet roasted garlic to it. The third is Classic Tomato, with sauce and mozzarella, the kind of pie all kids love. Panini, sandwiches,

Wednesday Evening BBQ

Summer lobster boils are a beloved Thursday evening tradition, and now there’s a sister event featuring regional American BBQ. Starting in July, Wednesday mornings, the chefs roll out a serious Lang barbecue smoker, and load it with seasoned wood. “They are extremely highquality competition smokers that I had the pleasure of working with during my time at The Ritz-Carlton on Amelia Island,” says Brooks. The chef pays homage to regional styles of barbecue with Texas brisket, Carolina pulled pork, St. Louis ribs, Cajun chicken and a Rhode Island bacon cheddar bratwurst. An abundance of sides includes honeyglazed cornbread, potato salad, baked beans, collard

Captain Teddy stayed busy during winter preparing for his favorite season. The certified U.S. Coast Guard Captain and former marine loves spring and summer, and he especially enjoys taking guests on excursions and running natural activities. “I live for this stuff,” he says. “It’s so much fun.” The Inn has a new fleet of ocean single and double kayaks, ready for May’s Flower Moon paddle from Weekapaug’s shore to a secluded sandbar in the middle of Quonnie Pond. Some Native American tribes call it the “flower moon” because that’s when flowers bloom. “We are going to do these kayak paddles anytime there's a super moon or a special moon, if the tides and weather permit,” says Beahm. Viewing events are also held on the Inn’s front lawn, where guests can behold the moon and planets through highpowered telescopes. During June’s full moon, Captain Teddy leads tours on foot along the pond’s shoreline

to view the ancient ritual of hundreds of horseshoe crabs laying eggs. Check social media for updates. Quonnie Queen, the Inn’s graceful, quiet Elco touring boat, has been completely restored, her electrical system (she’s powered by electricity to help keep the environment clean) updated, and the teak interior sanded, stained and varnished to gleaming. “The Quonnie Queen makes multiple trips every day for three to four months,” says Beahm, “and we put a lot of work back into her during winter.” He takes resort guests on complimentary daily tours. Guests can arrange charter tours for up to six on the Quonnie Queen, and the outing include beverages and a Weekapaug Inn-style cheese plate. Resort guests can also book 90-minute private excursions on land and sea with Captain Teddy, including fishing, swimming, biking and hiking, and a Castaway Lunch on a sandbar in the middle of the pond, a private version of the magical Sandbar Bites and Bubbles event.

“You have to try this!” Guests quickly spread the word about this magical food and nature excursion that debuted last year. Captain Teddy, at the helm of a low-bottomed boat, ferries 16 guests to a sandbar beach in the middle of Quonochontaug Pond. There, a casually elegant table and bamboo folding chairs are set up with a bar and special hors d’oeuvres, which can include lobster bisque

greens and macaroni salad. Local vegetable kabobs add something grilled for vegetarians. When guests return from a day’s adventure on sand and surf, they’re met with the mouthwatering scent of slowand-low-cooked barbecue. Wednesday evenings end with s’mores around the fire. The weekly events start at 5 p.m. Wednesday, and are open to resort and non-resort guests.

Del’s Frozen Lemonade and ice cream treats are also on the menu, along with beer and wine. The Inn offers rides to guests (and their beach gear) for the two-minute trip down the road, where they check in at the Bathhouse with a beach pass. While guests enjoy Dave’s Nitro Coffee, signature breakfast sandwiches and hash browns on the Bathhouse’s back deck, an attendant sets up chairs, blankets and umbrellas for them on the beach. And after breakfast, guests can just stroll along the sandy path through the dunes to the glorious beach.

shooters, roasted oysters and bruschetta. This spring and summer, Sandbar Bites and Bubbles is held twice a month, and it's open to resort guests and the public. The 90-minute excursion begins at 5 p.m. “People love it,” says Beahm. “It’s secluded. You’re surrounded by nature, and it’s luxurious.” He takes guests on walks, while talking about the history and ecology of the pond. “It’s a really, really nice evening,” he says.

Champagne and Oyster Hour

Oysters are the essence of coastal cuisine. They taste of the sea, balancing salinity, minerals and sweetness that, as any oyster lover will tell you, instantly energizes a person. Beginning in April, these monthly Champagne and Oyster Hours by the fire pit start at 5 p.m., on the front lawn overlooking Quonnie Pond—the very pond where the oysters are raised. “It’s so amazing to offer oysters harvested out of the pond where the Weekapaug Inn sits,” says Brooks. “It doesn’t get more local than that.” The chef serves them raw on the half-shell with lemon or Champagne mignonette, grilled on the open fire and topped with flavored butter. Chef’s classic Oysters Rockefeller, with local baby spinach and fresh herbs, is a favorite. Sparkling wine, effervescent and light bodied, and balancing a touch of sweetness with minerality, is a classic pairing for oysters. The sommelier serves oyster pairing wines such as sauvignon blanc and muscadet.

Back to Nature With an Earth-friendly focus, The Inn adds new sustainability measures. COMPOSTING PROGRAM Chef Andrew has been composting for as long as he can remember. Growing up in Vermont, even his public school composted, and in high school biology, kids grew vegetables in the school greenhouse. “Composting is something I’m passionate about,” says Brooks, “and I’m excited to bring it to the Weekapaug Inn.” The goal is for the property to become zero-waste. Food scraps go to Earth Care Farms, a composting farm in Charlestown, RI. Earth Care transforms that into high-quality, nourishing soil. “Our scraps become the soil that local farmers use to grow the produce we serve in The Restaurant,” says Brooks. “By composting, we complete the circle of life and stay true to the Inn’s culinary philosophy of supporting local farmers.” The compost is also used in the Inn’s herb garden and greenhouse.

BEACH CLEAN-UP Weekapaug Inn’s Naturalist and Director of Recreation, “Captain Teddy” Beahm, has driven another sustainability project, a monthly beach clean-up program. Weekapaug’s barrier beach is a jewel on the Atlantic Coast, a habitat for native species. “It’s an important piece of land,” he says. This community event allows the Inn, guests and neighbors the chance to give back and protect the land for future generations. “It’s really like a walk along the sand trail,” says Beahm. “We’re armed with gloves and pickers, the essentials, and I talk about the history of the area. Afterwards, we have a little burger-anddog barbecue.” Guests’ donations for these events go to local conservation organizations such as the Rhode Island Audubon Society. The Inn is working with Save the Bay to host an International Coastal Clean-Up Day in September.

im Komaromy was in a meeting at Ocean House, watching everyone hunch over phones and laptops. As the resort's Spa Director, he thought, “How can we focus on all the pinch points these devices are creating?” And so, the Ocean & Harvest Spa’s 60-minute Digital Wellness Detox service was conceived. It combines stretches and massage for the hands, neck, scalp, eyes and feet. “You don’t realize how sore your hands get from holding your phone all day, until somebody massages your hands,” he says. Komaromy offers a new menu of treatments available through June. His philosophy is a combined focus on health and wellness. “Everybody has a different approach to personal wellness,” he says. “It’s important to find the right combination—from your diet

to the workout classes you do. As a lifelong runner, I love the fitness aspect of well-being, but incorporating things like facials and general self-care are also essential.” Other new options include an organic facial created with products from the French company Phytomer. “Every single ingredient Phytomer uses is organic,” Komaromy says. “It’s a very simple, clean facial with not many scents, so it’s great for people with allergies.” The Relaxed Surfer Massage is a treatment that centers on the lower body and stretching. “This massage focuses on athletes, the heavy surfers who come in from a day on the ocean and need muscle relief after working out, maybe running a 5K,” Komaromy says. “We use muscle rollers to loosen up tight areas.” There's also an Ocean Illuminating LED

Light Therapy Facial with a phototherapy mask that can be dialed in for different needs. “You can choose anti-aging or brightening, whether you want to address dark spots or wrinkles,” Komaromy says. “You’re guaranteed to walk out with a luminescent glow.” And for pregnant guests, the spa has a 60-minute Babymoon Experience. “It's a massage targeting whatever pain points the mom-to-be is having,” he says, adding that the service involves Phytomer’s Seatonic. “It’s a natural oil for pregnant moms to firm the skin and reduce stretch marks.” Other offerings include a Seaweed Serenity Scrub for dry skin coming out of the winter, and a 90-minute massage using CBD oils. “We’re really excited about this little refresh for the spa,” Komaromy says. “We’re looking forward to a great year.”

s warm weather comes to the Northeast, boats go into the water, and winter coats go back into storage, thoughts turn to some free time and a relaxing vacation. The past two years have required some adjustments to travel plans, and for families with children, they include certain requirements: comfortable private space, great outdoor recreation, good food and childfriendly activities, easily available. Carefree is an apt adjective for what is needed these days. Throughout its season (May through October), Watch Hill Inn is well-prepared for families and other groups of relatives and friends who flock to this unspoiled coastal village. We would go to the beach, ride the carousel and end the day on the verandah sipping Shirley Temples,” says Plew. “Watch Hill has always been a special place for me.” Farther afield, many guests enjoy Mystic Aquarium and Mystic Seaport. The staff can direct you to dozens of spots of natural beauty and historic interest. But if you’d like to stick closer to your home away from home, another great perk is access to the restaurants and resort activities at Ocean House—just a quick walk up Plimpton Road—or at Weekapaug Inn, an easy 15-minute drive. Take a tour with the naturalist at Weekapaug Inn; treat yourself to a beach day or spa service at Ocean House. Watch Hill Windmills by CAPTAIN JACK SPRATT

Once a necessary part of town life, these structures came with the view

A

long the sand and boulder shoreline plains of Cape Cod, Long Island, Rhode Island and many of the small islands of the northeast, windmills were a ubiquitous part of the landscape. For over a decade, from 1887 to 1901, windmills were synonymous with Watch Hill, as depicted in a post card of July 3, 1900:

“My Dear Edna, Watch Hill is a very pretty place. Windmills, windmills everywhere windmills, this lovely village could be called Windmill Hill! Love to All, Elmer.”

WINDMILLS OF WATCH HILL The history of windmills at Watch Hill is a short one. For just over a decade from 1888 to 1901, windmills, wind-pumps or wind engines as they were known, some with water tank towers and observation platforms, became

a most unexpected feature of the Watch Hill landscape. The windmills were designed to pull water from ponds, cisterns and dug wells. Windmills were the latest gizmo in a world where the telegraph, electricity and the automobile were just becoming practical. The

wind water pumps were a must-have for the fashionable Watch Hill colony and a big step up from hand pumping water. Walking around Watch Hill today you might wonder why so many of these stately shingled cottages have a limited, or no, view of the ocean, river or bay. When the majority of these homes were built between 1887 and 1900 the object of landscaping, by such wellknown landscape architects as the Olmstead Brothers, was to minimize the planting of trees to emphasize the natural, windswept, rugged terrain and seascape. In fact, tree and shrub planting was socially unacceptable and frowned upon. If you took away the trees today you would see that these cottages up on the hills of Watch Hill would have magnificent seascape views, ideal for harnessing the wind. However, windmills were considered a blemish upon the glacial canvas. The unadorned, cheap, iron mail-order windmills, with their squeaky mechanisms and very loud fans, were not only considered an eyesore, but a noise nuisance. The windmills became a contentious issue among neighbors as well as hotel guests, as a Providence Journal article of July 29, 1900 notes: “There about as many windmills, all told, as there are cottages; looming up about the homes, and the continual revolving of their patent…, so many of them, located everywhere, makes you feel that you have struck a pretty lively place. They say that the Watch Hill windmills are a cure for insomnia, at least until the novelty wears off, and that will not take long.”

TOWN WATER ARRIVES The formation of the Watch Hill Fire District led the way for the introduction of town water in 1901 from the White Rock aquifer which put an end to the windmill blight. The undesirability of the windmills was referenced in another Providence Journal article from June 2, 1902: “There are 111 cottages now on the Hill, and all will be occupied this season. The introduction of the water service last year (1901) has caused the removal of the scores of windmills that formerly dotted the hills. The cottagers are glad to have these UNSIGHTLY machines gone, as they harmonized but little with the handsome summer homes.”

LAST OF THE WINDMILLS The windmill at Highland Lodge (above), built in 1898 lies prostrate on Westerly Road at the corner of Ninigret Avenue, no match for the maelstrom known as the storm of the century, the Great New England Hurricane of September 21, 1938. So went the last vestige of the many Watch Hill windmills, not always appreciated by residents and visitors, though as Miguel de Cervantes writes in Don Quixote: “Sometimes the scariest dragons and the fiercest giants, usually turn out to be no more than windmills.”

WIND POWER TODAY Today wind is the fastest growing source of renewable power. Looking southeast at Block Island, RI, from the Ocean House at Watch Hill, you can see the first American offshore windfarm with its five turbines and blades reaching 646 feet above the ground. In Fishers Island Sound, the engineer and inventor Dean Kamen has enabled North Dumpling Island to function completely off the power grid, using a wind generator, a solar array that follows the sun, a battery storage bank and LED lighting. “I

took a walk in the woods and came out taller than the trees.” Henry David Thoreau wrote that long ago, and it has never been more relevant than today as we all yearn to reconnect with nature. As a travel writer, it can seem like I’ve seen it all. I found myself wondering where I might discover a rejuvenating sense of wonder and joy again, as if experiencing it for the first time. Fortunately, I recently got to know the celebrated architect and master builder Paul Mihailides. Entering his superb new Hilltop Lodge at Preserve Sporting Club & Residences in richly forested Richmond, Rhode Island, a feeling of the new and undiscovered came rushing back. Set in the magical woodlands of coastal southern Rhode Island, the sprawling property defies description because there’s nothing else like in in the Northeast—or, in fact, anywhere. The Preserve is home to species that have not been found anywhere else in the state. You may spot a Snow Owl, Golden Eagle, Spotted Salamander, Monarch Butterfly or Praying Mantis. DESTINATIONS Preserve—literally—in The Range, built underground beneath the unreal Sporting Shoppe and featuring row after row of 150-yard shooting lanes, automated targets, every firearm imaginable, and a team of professional marksmen who patiently teach the safe, skillful way to handle a gun. I don’t normally go shooting, but there’s no denying the thrill of being at The Range and learning from an expert while testing my skills. Simply put, it’s a blast (no pun…just really fun). Sporting Director Alec Mihailides—Paul’s son and himself an Olympic-level marksman— is familiar with my experience. He said that often a reluctant spouse or partner will be persuaded to try The Range, only to find an undiscovered love for the sport. “It really is a game that you play against yourself,” says Alec Mihailides. “There’s hand-eye coordination and a competitive aspect to shooting sports. People like to challenge themselves. They love it and have a great time.” Those who don’t come to enjoy The Range come for outdoor sport shooting. In a lovely woodland oasis, sporting clays—the golf of sport shooting, as it’s known—is fantastic fun

in a group, or with any one of The Preserve’s welcoming instructors. Aficionados of the continental hunting style will find themselves among friends on the region’s only 210-foot-high European tower. If sporting clays are more your style, 19 covered open-air shooting pavilions have six clay throwers that are tailored to the individual or group’s desires. For those seeking aboriginal shooting skills, archery at The Preserve is unequalled anywhere, and for the under 10-year crowd there’s even Nerf archery. In a word: awesome.

off the ground, ziplining here feels like being a bird for exhilarating moments. Of course, some equate fishing with the sporting life. They’re after a different idyllic scene that brings us back to our roots in an almost game-like way for total enjoyment. Fishing in this part of Rhode Island is a best-kept secret among true outdoorsmen, and guests and residents of The Preserve can be one of them. The property sits aside the internationally famed Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed—a dream destination of fly-fishing enthusiasts the world over—and The Preserve keeps 10 fly-fishing ponds fully stocked. The largest is 10 acres across. any events and traditions had to be paused during the pandemic. Weddings fell squarely into that mix, with what would have been milestone events either drastically scaled down or postponed altogether. Now, the time has arrived when those events can once again be planned in all their grandeur—and some couples are embracing every last opportunity to make their big day one to remember. Katherine Kapnick and Louis Solmonson booked the entire Ocean House property for their guests to enjoy, while Katherine Roberts and William Sorin did the same at Weekapaug Inn. They then set about coordinating with the on-site teams to understand all their options and possibilities, and to create unforgettable events for family and friends alike.

A

s the Ocean House Collection Director of Membership and Events, Lauren DiStefano has planned some truly memorable experiences. Even so, the August 2021 wedding of Katherine Kapnick and Louis Solmonson stands out. “The wedding Katherine and Louis hosted was majestic, sophisticated and joyful,” DiStefano says. “It is one of those weddings you aspire to be a part of as a planner, and I am honored to have helped bring it to fruition. Everything was so well done.” Ocean House’s team planned the four-day event with Tara Guerard, who owns an eventplanning company in South Carolina. “Tara Guerard Soirée is an incredible partner to Ocean House,” DiStefano says. “She is an elite event production company that made everything fun.”

The details were breathtaking. The bride’s wardrobe changes on Thursday, Friday and for Saturday’s ceremony included gowns by Giambattista Valli, Luisa Beccaria and Monique Lhuillier. On Friday, the Daniel E. Johnson Band brought its brand of Nashville country music to a dance party in the sand, and Del’s Lemonade—a Rhode Island staple—arrived with a truckload of frozen lemonade to quench everyone’s thirst. “Ocean House worked with us to do a fullproperty rental,” Katherine says. “Once we figured out that we could do that, they let us host events on every inch of that property all day long.” Saturday, the ceremony was held in a historic chapel across the street with both a priest and a rabbi, since Katherine is Episcopalian and Louis is Jewish. Then, the High and Mighty

Brass Band from Brooklyn led a procession to the Ocean House terrace for cocktails before a dinner featuring Katherine’s favorite dish: chicken Milanese. After-dinner dancing was in a tent with a diamond-tiled dance floor modeled after La Sponda in Positano, Italy. All was picture-perfect until Hurricane Henri—the first hurricane to make landfall in Rhode Island in three decades—arrived late Saturday into Sunday morning. Guests had no choice but to leave early. By Sunday afternoon, only Katherine and Louis were left. “And then all the power went out in the hotel,” Louis says. “We went for dinner, and the chef was on the grill, and we sat pretty much alone in their grand dining room and had this candlelit dinner of grilled steaks and vegetables. It was one of the most memorable moments of the whole week.”

witching their wedding date from September 2020 to June 2021 turned out to be ideal not only for Katherine Roberts and William Sorin, but also for their guests. “It was perfect timing with the vaccine rollout, with everyone having been stuck inside for so long,” Katherine says. “My mom, my aunt and I went up to the Inn for a girls’ week before the wedding. We arrived on a Thursday, relaxed, hung out by the pool, and then we did the welcome rehearsal dinner and drinks and stayed there.” Katherine stayed in a suite with all her bridesmaids, while William and his groomsmen were together in a cottage. The weather all weekend was spectacular—exactly what everyone hopes a June wedding in Rhode Island will be for an outdoor ceremony.

“It ended up being a beautiful day,” Katherine says. “We had the reception outside as well, in a tent.” Her father is a cigar aficionado, so in addition to requesting a raw bar, the bride also asked the special events team to create a cigar bar. “We have cigars here on a daily basis. We sent Mr. Roberts the selection that we have, and he chose what he would like,” says Rachelle Lachica, Director of Catering and Events at Ocean House. “We had a server stand and pass them out. We had cutters available, as well as lighters. It was a nice display with a humidor. There were lounge chairs outside of the tent so guests could enjoy their cigars.” Another special touch was the dessert bar, in addition to traditional wedding cake. Katherine loves key lime pie, and she wanted smaller-size

sweets that guests could grab and bring to the after-party. “We had a lovely display with key lime pie, crème brûlée, cookie dough pops—a good variety of treats,” Lachica says. “That’s a nice touch. Not everyone likes cake. There was a coffee station as well. We arrange it however guests like it, including with different flavors. I’m doing one soon with specialty coffees.” Katherine, who is expecting the couple’s first child in May, says there’s not one thing she would change. “When we were looking at venues, we walked into the Weekapaug Inn, and it was a no-brainer,” she says. “It’s a cozier, more intimate venue. We could rent out the Inn just for our family and friends, so it was our weekend.”
