Chamber to Produce Restaurant Guide

Over 20,000 San Diego school children will go entire weekends not knowing if there will be enough food to eat. These are not just kids from rural areas or low income neighborhoods. Nor are they kids of any particular race or ethnicity. You won’t see their picture hanging on anyone’s refrigerator door or their sad faces on late night television commercials with paid celebrity spokespersons pleading their cause. These are children from right here in our own communities, from all walks of life, who all have one thing in common... they’re hungry. Hunger can be harmful to any individual, but is particularly devastating to children due to their increased vulnerability and potential for longterm consequences, including health issues, behavioral challenges, future career opportunities and social acceptance. Studies have found that: Hunger has been associated with health problems that may hinder a child’s ability to function normally and participate fully in school and other activities.

SCHOOL BACKPACK PROGRAM

Children who suffer from food insecurities are more likely to require hospitalization, at higher risk for chronic health conditions, such as anemia, and asthma, and have more frequent instances of oral health problems. Food insecurity among young children is associated with poorer physical quality of life, which may prevent them from fully engaging in daily activities such as school and social interaction with peers. Food insecurity is also associated with social difficulties, truancy and school tardiness, hyperactivity, aggression, anxiety, mood swings, bullying, and fighting with other children. The North County San Diego Food Bank has committed to take over and run a “Back- Pack” program in our District (Carlsbad, Oceanside and Vista). This is a weekend food assistance program developed specifically for children who depend on school lunch programs for their primary source of nutrition Monday through Friday and have little to nothing of any nutritional value to eat on weekends. Each week throughout the school year, volunteers come together to fill backpacks with 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners, and a few healthy snacks, enough food to sustain a child through the weekend. The backpacks are delivered to schools and discretely distributed to the children in need by a designated NC Food Bank liaison. The food will have a significant impact in the lives of those children fortunate enough to receive it.

We need to all come together and help. Tri-City Medical Center has expressed interest in setting aside $25,000 each year for four years to support this program and is asking the business community in each city to sponsor their local schools with this most worthy cause by matching us $1 for $1. Investing in the nutritional needs of our community children will not only provide a higher skilled future workforce, but is the right thing to do. Will you join us? C H A M B E R O FFE R S V O I C E F O R B U S I N E S S I N DISTRIC TING PROCESS In early May, the Oceanside City Council voted to transition from at-large council elections to district elections in order to avoid a potential lawsuit threatened under the California Voting Rights Act. Numerous community meetings and public hearing took place during May and June in order to provide for community input into the districting process. The Chamber was represented at each of the meetings and has been a strong voice for the business community in the process. The Chamber’s position on this issue has been that each of the four council districts should drawn in a way that would ensure that no district was without a significant number of businesses. According to Chamber CEO, Scott Ashton, “we want to be sure that the councilmembers in each district have a reason to listen to our business community. If a district is drawn that does not include a substantial number of businesses, there is a danger of having a councilmember somewhere down the road that doesn’t feel the need to listen to the voice of business.”

Communities of Interest Map

On June 21, 2017 the City Council voted 4-0 to approve the Communities of Interest Map. This map will be presented to the City Council at the fourth public hearing on July 25, 2017. At that meeting, staff will propose introduction of an ordinance approving the district boundaries and election calendar for the 2018 election.

SACRAMENTO – Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) honored Oceanside Therapy Group (OTG) as the 2017 Small Business of the Year for the 36th Senate District. Bates recognized owners Joshua and Rebekah Van Orden during the California Small Business Day awards lunch in Sacramento. “Oceanside Therapy Group exemplifies the best qualities of a successful small business – hard work, dedication and service,” said Bates. “Owners Joshua and Rebekah Van Orden can take pride in building a business that has become an important part of Oceanside. I am honored to recognize them for their work to help improve the lives of many families across North San Diego County.” Founded in 2009, Oceanside Therapy Group offers speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, so that multiple services can be provided at one convenient location. Located very close to Camp Pendleton, Oceanside Therapy Group is honored to work with many military families in addition to other local families across North San Diego County. “Rebekah and I are honored that Senator Bates has recognized our business as her 2017 Small Business of the Year,” said Joshua Van Orden. “We thank our employees for their hard work to make the business a success, and we are deeply grateful to the families of Oceanside Therapy Group for giving us their trust. We are proud to be in Oceanside and look forward to continuing to provide excellent service in the years to come.” California Small Business Day honored 85 small businesses this year for their contribution to the state’s economy. There are approximately 3.6 million small businesses in California, which account for 99 percent of the state’s employers and employ 50 percent of the workforce.

Tri-City Medical Center leading the charge! North County is gearing up for the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association’s inaugural Healthy For Good North County Heart and Stroke Walk, sponsored by Tri-City Medical Center. Organizers are committed to creating an environment where participants will learn what they can do to improve their heart and brain health, as well as think about the benefits a healthy lifestyle provides. Organizers are hoping more than 2,000 people will participate in the inaugural event, and believe the beautiful Oceanside Pier location will be a major draw. The American Heart Association’s, North County Heart and Stroke Walk will take place Saturday, September 30 at the Oceanside Pier. The non-competitive 3.1-mile route (5K), which participants can walk or run, will feature teams of employees from local companies as well as community teams. Friends and family members of all ages are invited to join. Heart disease and stroke survivors will receive special survivor caps to distinguish them from the rest of the pack. For survivors and others that might have medical restrictions, there will be a special one mile course. Registration is free, and includes free health screenings, live entertainment, kid’s zone, survivor area, VIP area, expo area, and much more. Many things are involved in creating a successful Heart and Stroke Walk, and few have the opportunity to help launch one. One of the most important pieces in putting together a successful Heart and Stroke Walk is an Executive Leadership Team. The North County Heart and Stroke Walk Executive Leadership Team is led by the North County Heart and Stroke Walk Chair and Tri-City Medical Center CEO, Steve Dietlin. Mr. Dietlin and Tri-City Medical Center are the guiding forces behind the launching of the North County Heart and Stroke. “Our goal is to have 2,000 walkers and over 30 North County companies involved,” Steve Dietlin said, “I know we can do it, especially once the North County hears and learns more about the event.” According to the American Heart Association, walking is the simplest positive change individuals can make to effectively improve their heart health because it’s free, easy and has the lowest dropout rate of any exercise. Research has shown walking is the single most effective form of exercise to achieve heart health. The benefits of walking and moderate physical activity for as little as 30 minutes each day can help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke - the number one and number five killers of Americans, respectively. Registration for the American Heart Association’s, North County Heart & Stroke Walk is free. PGA TOUR MEMBER CHARLEY H O FFM A N H O S T S YO U T H G O L F CLINIC IN OCE ANSIDE On May 3, four-time PGA TOUR winner and native San Diegan Charley Hoffman visited Pro Kids | The First Tee of San Diego in Oceanside to give over 50 local kids and teens a brief lesson in the game of golf...and a big glimpse into what their futures could hold. The event was a precursor to Pro Kids’ annual fundraising gala, Celebrates, on June 10. Charley and his wife, Stacy, were this year’s honorees, chosen for their professional achievements as well as their philanthropic generosity to youth programs in San Diego and Las Vegas through the Charley Hoffman Foundation. The event was a resounding success, raising more than $500,000 that will help more kids in Oceanside and City Heights receive guidance on the golf course, in the classroom, and in determining their college and career paths to ultimately lead successful lives. If you are interested in becoming a Pro Kids member, volunteer or donor, come visit us at 821 Douglas Drive, Oceanside, CA 92058 (next to the Oceanside Municipal Golf Course!) or contact our Oceanside Program Director Katie Lynch at (760) 547-8566 or klynch@prokidsonline.org.
