Letter from the Editor GREETINGS, EVERYONE! We hope that you have been sticking with those resolutions you made at the start of the year. Statistics show that most of us have slacked off by now or we’re struggling to make new found habits part of a regular routine. If that’s you, stick with it! Statistics show that commitment to resolutions and goals begin to wane around this time—but you’re a fighter—we know you are. So keep going! We kick off this issue with our Caribbean Bucket List, a list of experiences we think you need to try this year. Whether you pick a few or go for the gusto and try to get them all in (and if you do, we’d love to hear from you), we guarantee you that your life will be even richer for it. It is also peak travel season, so if you have been bitten by the wanderlust bug, but need some new luggage, we have you covered with a few of our picks for stylish and functional travel gear. And last, but certainly not least, we’ve compiled a photo recap of our FashionShowcase Weekend 2015. Once again, the weekend was about making new friends, connecting with old ones and enjoying an eclectic weekend of fashion, golf and parties in Montego Bay. Speaking of fashion, February is always an interesting time of year with awards season in full swing and the Fashion Week Shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris. We’ll have more to share with you on that in the next issue. Just a quick reflection: we have already lost some icons this year with the passing of unforgettable songbird Natalie Cole, incomparable music and fashion innovator David Bowie, Earth Wind and Fire founder Maurice White, who blessed us with some of the most timeless tunes ever written, and the talented actor Alan Rickman, who has forever garnered a place in the hearts of legions of Harry Potter fans playing the tragically conflicted anti-hero Professor Severus Snape. In the grand scheme of life, our time here is short (for some much more than others) — live fully and make the most of it while you can. From me and the entire OCEAN Style Media team, we wish you much joy, health, prosperity and blessings for the upcoming year. And may all your wishes that align with your highest good come true. So come dive into Splash! Let’s get wet!

SEE THE UNDERWATER SCULPTURES IN MOLINERE BAY, GRENADA. Appreciation for art has been taken to new heights in the watery depths off the coast of Grenada — home to the first underwater aquatic sculpture presentation in the world. Hauntingly somber and otherworldly in its beauty, the statues continue to evolve due to the ocean’s biodynamic impact. The statues are more than just a modern marvel; they are also educational, helping spectators to learn more about the local culture and diversity of its rich history. The sculptures pay homage to Africans who crossed the middle passage as slaves to be brought to the New World. These displays also help sea life to flourish instead of disrupting the stability of the ecosystem by acting as a magnet to sea life, helping to balance overpopulated reefs. LET’S BE NAKED ALL DAY LONG IN NEGRIL, JAMAICA! Goodbye conservatism, hello freedom! Take it all off with class and style at Hedonism II, a resort that now features a 5 million upgrade! You don’t need to be perfectly toned to join the diverse crowd of resort guests. Nudism is about loving and appreciating the skin you’re in. If you aren’t ready to go fully nude, there are other options made available.
LIGHT UP THE WATER AT BIOLUMINESCENT BAY IN VIEQUES, PUERTO RICO. When the sun sets on Vieques, nightlife fit for a fairy tale comes alive in Mosquito Bay, home to the Bioluminescent Bay, where highly sensitive dinoflagellates live in the water. They react so strongly to any contact or movement that The Guinness Book of World Records named the bay one of the brightest in the world in 2008 because the organisms create stunning blue light as a natural response, and the plankton light up in gorgeous green colors to create a world of mystery and romance on the water. oceanstylemagazine.com
SWIM WITH THE PIGS IN EXUMA IN THE BAHAMAS. This little piggy went to market… poor thing! All the other little piggies went swimming in the turquoise and emerald waters of Exuma. Frolicking in the surf with these playful porcines is quickly climbing up the bucket list of many, from locals to celebrities. They’re friendly, fun, and so cute, you’ll definitely want to take pictures with them. Go ahead. The #PiggieSelfie movement is well under way. The amazing abilities of these lovable pigs are now recognized in film culture as well and have broken ground at multiple festivals.

PLAY MAS AT TRINIDAD CARNIVAL. A carnival this extravagant isn’t just for watching! Play mas and join a band to party down the streets with worldwide participants who have come to get in on the action. The ground-thumping music, band and Road March song competitions will keep you energized and wanting more. You’ll find yourself dancing down the streets in a costume as outrageously fun and sexy as the atmosphere. As the diverse, multi-culti crowd gathers to party and celebrate the spirit of unity and freedom, the streets come alive with beauty and color. After the Trinidad Carnival, lime in Tobago, where you can ease your hangover on tranquil, pristine beaches. Plan well in advance for this lavish affair
SWIM WITH HUMPBACK WHALES IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. The Sanctuary for Marine Animals in the Dominican Republic prides itself on having great respect for its non-human inhabitants. The area is mostly unexplored by tourists for the privacy of the whales and the eco-conscious methods used. You’ll be floating peacefully in the water as whales approach you on their terms. Because the animals are so protected, these carefully monitored (but close) encounters can be full of surprises you aren’t likely to find elsewhere. Following the rules here is a small price compared to the privilege of joining this majestic underwater community. 10 OCEAN Style
GOLF AT CINNAMON HILL AT ROSE HALL IN MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA. Golfing in luxury is at its finest on Cinnamon Hill. Found among the 18 holes are challenges that make for the perfect golf excursion. Enjoy the sport in close range of the ocean, or travel to higher grounds to play in mountains of lush greenery. On 400 acres that was once a sugar plantation, Cinnamon Hill has caddies that have been dubbed ‘The Best in the World’ by Golfer Magazine. Take advantage of the opportune entry to the Rose Hall Great House while you’re at it. This legendary Great House was once home to the “White Witch,” a tortuous slave owner who is said to still haunt the property.
EXPLORE THE MAYAN RUINS IN BELIZE The Mayans were among the most interesting people in history. They constructed grand architectural masterpieces that remain standing, and left behind artifacts that have helped to make Belize a tourist favorite. Historians are still fascinated and bewildered by their ability to understand complex scientific and mathematical concepts, construct majestic palaces, and expertly cultivate the land before many of humankind’s most important tools were created to do so. They left such an impression that many people today still cite the Mayan calendar for important dates. See how they lived and worked to get a better feel of these incredible people and their creations. oceanstylemagazine.com
GO SAILING IN ENGLISH HARBOUR, ANTIGUA. Antigua’s Sailing Week hosts five days of excitement featuring over 100 yachts that are set to race across the stunning waters. VISIT THE ST. NICHOLAS ABBEY PLANTATION RUM DISTILLERY IN ST. PETER, BARBADOS. Rum from Barbados has come a long way from being called ‘Kill Divil’ due to its awful taste. Get an intimate look at the process of making rum that goes straight from the barrel to the bottle at St. Nicholas Abbey, one of the oldest plantations in the West Indies. The property may look antique, but it’s recently been renovated. Its worn appearance has been expertly crafted with detail that will impress 17th century history buffs and modern design lovers. Enjoy learning the history of the plantation and tasting the delicious rum punch that the Caribbean is famous for! 12 OCEAN Style
PARTY WITH CELEBS AT OCEAN STYLE MAGAZINE FASHIONSHOWCASE WEEKEND IN MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA. Get in with where you fit in with the Who’s Who at FashionShowcase Weekend. Traditionally held towards the end of October, the multi-day event kicks off with a swimwear and lingerie show and includes the exclusive All-White Party Masquerade Party Eyes Wide Shut at the Rose Hall Great House, a celebrity golf invitational, the invite-only Fashion Icon Award Dinner honoring a pioneer in the Caribbean fashion industry and the namesake main event where graceful models strut the catwalk displaying the region’s most talented fashion designers. And the afterparties are amazing. It doesn’t seem that it can get much better than this, yet, the show is said to be getting better every year!
GO SPELUNKING IN THE HATO CAVES IN WILLEMSTAD, CURACAO. In northern Willemstad, no visit to Curacao would be complete without a visit to these hypnotizing limestone caves. Originally formed by the sea, the caves became visible on land and are now a historical landmark. The drawings found on the wallstell stories of the Arawak tribe members who placed them there, and significant parts of Amerindian culture are left to be deciphered through their symbols. The caves later served as a hiding place for slaves when they fled captivity. Fruit bats, the current regular inhabitants, can be seen hanging above and further spelunking here will lead you to waterfalls and refreshing pools. oceanstylemagazine.com

HAVE YOUR BEST SKIN EVER IN 2016! The integumentary system is the largest organ system in the human body (it’s our protective covering!), so it is not surprising that consumers spend billions of dollars on skincare each year in the United States alone ($11.2 Billion in 2014 according to NPD — a company that tracks consumer spending across several industries worldwide). And nowhere skin more visible than on your face. At the risk of stating the obvious, your face is the first thing people see when they meet you and glowing, healthy looking skin is a signal about your overall well-being. Conversely, having problem, blemished skin can cause self-esteem and confidence to take a hit. After all, how can you conquer the world if you’re worried about pimples, acne scars, discoloration and rough, patchy looking skin? And while today’s cosmetic artistry can mask just about any problem—some YouTube makeup tutorials are nothing short of magical in their ability to transform—the truth is, all we really want is to be comfortable in the skin we’re in when the war paint comes off at night (you do remember to take off your makeup before bed, don’t you?). Well for those of us having challenges with putting our best face forward, we have a list of products and a few tips to help you make 2016 your best skin year ever!
SKINCARE CLEANSING TOOLS By now, everyone has heard of the Clarisonic skin cleansing brush, which has been updated over the years. Spawning a host of competitors to the market after their debut, these high-powered, yet non-abrasive rotary brushes still remove more makeup and grime than your washcloth alone. However, there is a new(er) kid on the block. The Foreo Luna cleansing brush uses silicone, rather than traditional, bristles that never have to be replaced. And included in the design is an anti-aging mechanism that helps to combat fine lines and wrinkles.
CLEANSING OILS Don’t let the idea of putting oil on your skin dissuade you—particularly if you are breakout prone—from trying this. Cleansing oils are a beauty must-have, and with good reason! Rather paradoxically, they remove debris and trapped oils from the skin without over stripping and drying skin, which is essential in these cold months (if you’re unlucky enough to be experiencing winter right now). Origins Clean Energy Cleansing Oil is a great pick for its antibacterial properties due to an infusion of essential lemon and orange oils.
RETINOL CREAMS/SERUMS Despite the multitude of ingredients on the market, even dermatologists will tell you that retinol remains the power workhorse of them all. Once available only by prescription, retinol is a vitamin commonly used in skincare products due to its ability to reduce discoloration from scarring and sunspots, while smoothing and plumping fine lines and slightly deeper wrinkles. Retinol is potent stuff, so try to use cream or serum that also has moisturizing properties, such as Kate Somerville’s RetASphere 2 in 1 Retinol Night Cream (pricey but worth it). And if you plan on adding a retinol-based moisturizer to your beauty regimen, do NOT skip out on the following...
SUNSCREEN It would be completely futile to use great products and undo all of their benefits by leaving your face exposed to sun damage. Damaging UV rays from the sun are responsible for the great majority of skin problems, ranging from breaking down collagen (which supports elasticity) making skin ripe for wrinkles, to practically rolling out the welcome mat for sun spots, while darkening existing blemishes. And sunscreen is a MUST if you are using retinols or any type of peel on a regular basis because they cause increased sensitivity. If you’ve ever avoided using sunscreen because of how utterly thick and clogging they feel once you slick them on, consider using H2O’s Face Oasis Hydrating Lotion with SPF 30. It’s delightfully aquatic fragrance and light texture will have you hooked!
oceanstylemagazine.com
EXFOLIANTS Sloughing off dead skin cells is necessary to prevent skin from looking dull and rough. Some people love scrubs (avoid products with microbeads as they are bad for the environment), but our choice to get the job done is peel pads. These convenient, facefriendly, acid-saturated wipes break down the epidermis with gentle chemical action to reveal fresher, smoother skin beneath. Industry favorite Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Peel in regular or extra strength is still our top choice.
ALSO, CONSIDER THESE TIPS: • Start with a clean slate. A good microdermabrasion or deep pore facial will put you on the right track by removing built up impurities or existing pimples and blemishes (yes, extractions can hurt, but they are totally worth it). There are countless deals on sites such as Groupon.com and LivingSocial.com, so treating yourself to a good salon treatment doesn’t have to be a splurge. • Drink lots of water. Hydration is essential to healthy skin. Download an app such as Water Your Body if you need reminders to get your daily suggested amount in. • Get enough sleep. While you are asleep at night, your body goes to work repairing cells and other damage caused throughout the day. They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing! • Always take off your makeup at night. Period. • Get professional advice. See a dermatologist if you have persistent problems that might require a prescription. Having clear skin is not considered a cosmetic improvement; many health plans cover the visit.

THE SEXIEST PIECE OF BODY JEWELRY YOU’LL WANT TO WEAR
BY TUERE RANDALL
Festival season is around the corner and soon there will be lots of Instagram pics of girls donning body jewelry. However, there is one item that still seems to be flying under the mainstream radar and so I thought I’d share it with you. While I simply adore jewelry of all kinds (diamonds are still a girl’s best friend), this one flourish has a seductive power quite unlike any other piece of jewelry I have ever worn. In fact, I can’t stop buying them. Simply put, I’m addicted to waist beads. Waist beads have their history rooted in Africa, even though many ancient traditions have also revered and celebrated the womb space, which is, quite literally, the seat of creation. And that just might be why they are so deliciously carnal. No other type of body jewelry oozes with this much sensuality, adorning the oh so sexy sacral chakra that governs, among other things, reproduction. In all their earthy splendor, these charming belly (or hip) decorations scream love goddess without ever uttering as much as a whisper. Instantly elevating you from mere mortal to femme deity, you will walk differently when you wear them – even if you’re the only one who knows you have them on.
waist beads are single strand, others are multilayered and they are designed from a multitude of different materials, from beads to glass and semi-precious stones, crystals and metal trinkets. Many artists craft their beads with a specific symbolism in mind. I have a set of beads made with rose quartz, a crystal known for its ability to strengthen romantic energy and the heart chakra, which also has a planet Venus symbol on it which embodies the sacred feminine. I have another with a small brass pendant of the Egyptian Goddess of truth, balance and harmony, Ma’at, and one with a pewter tiger pendant and tiger’s eye beads to represent my Chinese Astrological sign, but also because tiger’s eye is known for bringing protection and good luck to the wearer. I even have one with a dragon pendant, because, well ... Game of Thrones. In total I own 15 and counting ...
But enough of me, ladies, it’s time for you to get your own. Or maybe you’ll be lucky and that special someone will gift you a set. And fellas, you’ll score major cool points with a gift like this (bonus points if you know her waist size, but even if you don’t know it exactly, many waist beads come with an extension chain). So as a way to show some post-Valentine’s Day love to our readers, I asked two of the stores that I have purchased from to give a discount to our Splash! readers (that’s you!). Use coupon code OCEANLOVE for 15% off at WrapandSoul and coupon code OCEANSTYLE for 10% off at either Blessyourbelly on Etsy or www. BYBWaistbeads.com . And check out some of their designs below.

Best worn with crop tops or low riding, flowing maxi skirts if you’d like them on full display, there is actually no wrong time to wear them. Let it be your little secret... and the man you bestow the privilege of revealing them to. One of the best things about waist beads is that they are not really available at large corporate stores. Most are sold by small business artisans on sites such as Etsy, who put much pride and love into their craft. And they are very affordable – the most expensive ones I have seen were close to $100 but not over that amount, but many are offered for prices between $20 and $30. And the plethora of shops on Etsy and elsewhere on the web that offer them mean a wider selection for the consumer to choose from. Some

On February 4, 2016, the One Love Charity Gala was hosted on the Lawns of Rose Hall Great House and the One Love Charity Concert will take place tonight at the Rose Hall Aqueduct. The sensational acts set to perform are known worldwide, and includes Akon, Nico & Vinz, Kymani Marley, Morgan Heritage, Tessanne Chin, Skip Marley, Nadine Sutherland, Jesse Royal, NoMaddz, Tanto Metro & Devonte, Iba Mahr, Kranium, CK, Devin Di Dakta, Ikaya, D’Burnz, Sabrina the Diva, Teflon, and Ruff Kut band; with hosts Iceman and ZJ Sparks. Cedella, who is both inspirational and full of positivity, took the time to chat with Ocean Style about the fundraiser and family. What is the message you hope to instill through this fundraiser and One Love fundraisers in the future? The Bob Marley Foundation and Rita Marley Foundation are working hard to bring education and resources to our communities in Jamaica and beyond. What are the ways in which the One Love fundraiser seeks to empower communities in Jamaica? We want to continue our work in early education through developing programs that assist with reading, writing and more. We hope to expand programs that teach sustainable living as well.

How did you come to be involved with international artists Akon and Nico and Vinz? Many of the artists have worked with my brothers or we have met at other events.
Are there any special songs you can’t wait to hear during the live performances? I will be so happy to see my son Skip playing his songs ‘Cry To Me’ and ‘Life’ on the stage!
Akon is known for being a very socially conscious entrepreneur, in addition to being a highly acclaimed performing artist. How did he respond to being tapped to headline this lineup? Akon is an amazing artist and friend who cares deeply about Jamaica and happens to be a big fan of both my Father and family’s music. So we didn’t have to twist his arm ;).
Along with your father, what are some of the things and who are some of the people that keep you inspired as you work so hard to raise awareness and help others? My family is my first and foremost inspiration in anything I do. My love for them makes me love the world in a much brighter light.
You have a pretty balanced blend of veteran and contemporary Jamaican artists slated to play at the concert, what do you think your father would say about contemporary music in Jamaica, particularly dance hall? I think he would respect it and understand its place in our community but I am not sure it would be his favorite. You’re partnering with the Rollins Foundation and the Sandals Foundation on this Festival. Are there particular projects of theirs that you admire? I am honored to work with partners who share our same goals. Both the Rollins and Sandals Foundation have done so much work for Jamaica that I hope we can come together and make a larger impact.
As a supporter of sustainable practices and eco-inspired projects, how well do you think these ideas are being embraced overall in Jamaica? I hear of many projects happening all over the island to build more sustainable practices in farming and energy. Like anywhere in the world, we can always do better so hopefully we can do it together! Along with the fundraiser, what are other ways that people can get involved to show support? We are launching the WHOA campaign online this week where you can donate to the cause and receive some fun gifts from my family and from Sandals…Oh yeah, and a new version of ‘Could You Be Loved’ by me!

OCEAN STYLE FASHIONSHOWCASE WEEKEND RECAP BY TUERE RANDALL
OCEAN Style’s Fashion Showcase Weekend and Celebrity Golf Invitation took place last October in beautiful Montego Bay, where a bunch of people came out to enjoy a fun-filled and starstudded weekend of fashion, parties and gold. We were happy to welcome back our celebrity guests Nicole Murphy, Bryce Wilson, John Salley, Flex Alexander, as well as greet some of our FSW first timers Taye Diggs, Angela Simmons, Selita Ebanks, Tichina Arnold, Mystikal and ANTM contestant and rapper Don Benjamin. Festivities kicked off with our swimwear and lingerie show on Thursday night at Secrets AllInclusive Resort, our home away from home for the weekend. Our models graced the catwalk in slinky little numbers by Caribbean designers Ashley Martin, House of Neahlis’ Lisa McIntoshAris and Raxann Chinn, as well as internationally recognized labels Agent Provocateur, Victoria’s Secret, Dita Von Teese, and Roberto Cavalli, to name a few. After the show, everyone headed to Secrets’in-house nightclub, Desire, where guests danced and mingled until well past midnight. On Friday, we held a dinner at the Montego Bay Convention Center in honor of our 2015 Fashion Icon Award recipient Kingsley Cooper – a man

who is credited with singlehandedly putting the Caribbean fashion scene on the map with the advent of Caribbean Fashion Week. Mr. Cooper graciously accepted the honor and spent the evening with us along with his family. Later that evening, everyone gathered at the Rose Hall Great House for the highly anticipated Eyes Wide Shut All White Party. Actress/DJ Nicole Lyn spun the tunes against the hauntingly chic backdrop of the infamous estate while partygoers ate, drank and danced on the lawn. Fashion designers Dexter Pottinger, Franz Christie, Leeanna Designs and Dacian Alexander sent models down the runway in ingenious creations for men and women. Nicole Murphy picked the winner of the Best Mask contest and Mystikal performed a medley of his hits for the crowd (and he hasn’t missed a beat!). Afterwards, our entourage opted for another late night, this time out at Pier One. The weather was perfect and everyone enjoyed the authentic local vibes. On Saturday, some of our VIPs participated in our celebrity Golf Invitational, while others opted to hang around the resort and play an impromptu game of pool volleyball. A small group headed out to Scotchie’s for some authentic Jamaican cuisine. Later that evening, our guests were
treated to an evening of comedy courtesy of YouTube sensation Quite Perry, followed by our main fashion presentation, once again at the Montego Bay Convention Center. Designers Heather Jones, Carlton Jones and labels Uzuri International and Femekha by Raxann Chin showed gorgeous collections of couture fashions in a litany of vibrant pastels and watercolors, luxurious silks and satins, and diaphanous, breezy fabrics, along with edgier feathered and beaded pieces that set the catwalk aglow. There was an after party at the venue; then a few of us headed to Margaritaville on the Hip Strip for a quick jaunt into town before coming back to Secrets. Some guests extended their stay to hang out with new friends for the weekend. I guess OCEAN Style FashionShowcase Weekend is like that – it feels like we’re one big family in a way. My favorite part of the weekend? Singing Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” at the Piano Bar at Secrets with Nicole Murphy and a few of her friends, of course. The best moments are often never planned!
