As the sun shines brightly and the temperatures rise, it’s time to embrace the joy of summer and indulge in the delightful world of Spanish wine. With its rich history, diverse grape varieties, and vibrant flavours, Spain has become a haven for wine enthusiasts. Whether you’re lounging by the pool, hosting a barbecue, or enjoying a picnic at the beach, Spanish wine is the perfect companion for your summer adventures. One of the most famous wine regions in Spain is Rioja, located in the north of the country. Rioja wines are known for their exceptional quality and unique ageing process. The region produces both red and white wines, but it’s the reds that truly shine. Made primarily from the Tempranillo grape, Rioja reds exhibit flavours of ripe berries, spices, and a hint of oak. These wines are well-structured with a balanced acidity, making them an excellent choice for pairing with grilled meats and hearty summer dishes.
If you’re looking for a crisp and refreshing wine to beat the summer heat, turn your attention to the coastal region of Rías Baixas. Situated in the northwest of Spain, Rías Baixas is famous for its white wines made from the indigenous Albariño grape. With its aromatic profile of citrus fruits, peach, and tropical notes, Albariño is the perfect companion for seafood and light summer fare.
For those seeking a bold and full-bodied wine, look no further than the region of Priorat. Situated in Catalonia, Priorat is renowned for its powerful red wines crafted from a blend of Grenache and Carignan grapes. These wines boast intense flavours of blackberries, cherries, and herbs, accompanied by a velvety texture and a long, lingering finish. Priorat wines are perfect for grilling sessions, offering a robust partner to accompany your flame-kissed steaks or hearty barbecued ribs.
And if you like bubbles in your wine, then Cava is the wine for you. Cava is a sparkling wine produced primarily in the Catalonia region. Often compared to Champagne, Cava offers a more affordable alternative for those seeking a touch of elegance in their summer celebrations. Made using the traditional method, Cava exhibits fine bubbles, a creamy texture, and a delightful array of flavours ranging from green apple and citrus to toasted almonds. Raise a flute of Cava for a toast during your summer soirées, or pair it with a fruit-based dessert for a delightful finale to your meal.
As you embark on your Spanish wine adventure this summer, don’t forget to explore other regions such as Ribera del Duero, Penedès, and Navarra, each offering their own unique wine styles and grape varieties. Remember to serve your

Salud!
¡Salud! n

La Nueva Restinga Beach
By: Raymond Watts
Aftera long wait for the usual paperwork to be finalised, Restinga Beach was finally given the go ahead during the winter, to totally transform this popular beachside venue. It has been given a fresh new look with every aspect of the venue being given a rebuild. The transformation is incredible. The finishing touches are still being made on a weekly basis, but after a long wait the fabulous beachside restaurant and terrace is open for business and looking forward to welcoming you once again.
So what can you expect from the new Restinga Beach? Well, the menu hasn’t changed, it still offers the same high quality Mediterranean favourites that you have become accustomed to at Restinga Beach. Enjoy a selection of succulent meats, fresh fish and seafood, spectacular salads, soups, casseroles and a fabulous selection of Paella and rice dishes, which are a house speciality and need to be tasted to be believed. The eclectic menu is created using only the finest and freshest ingredients, sourced locally where possible. Come along and enjoy a lazy lunch, a gin and tonic or even just a freshly brewed coffee on the spacious and shaded terrace with beautiful beach and sea views. Why not take a beach bed for the day and take advantage of the beach bar offering cocktails, chilled beers, soft drinks, ice creams and so much more ...and all without having to leave the sandy beach.
To escape the heat of a summer’s day, you have the option of enjoying the delightful large interior dining salon with, of course, more beautiful beach views.
Restinga Beach is located on Playa Vilches on the Torrox to Nerja coast road at Km 288, just outside of Nerja and usually has plenty of free beachside parking. The team at the all new Restinga Beach look forward to welcoming you.
