1 Paragraph Summary of Novel
Summary High Fidelity is a story of a thirty something year old record store owner named Rob. Rob lives in a suburb outside of London. The story starts with him making a list of his top five most memorable breakups, while making note to leave out Laura, the girl he is currently in the middle of a breakup with. Rob tells the awkward and tragic stories of his teenage and twenties love interests. He also dwells on the topic of being dumped, feeling desperate and his immoral behavior, in a brutally and shockingly honest way. Throughout the book we see the deterioration of Rob’s relationship with Laura falling apart while at the same time he is attempting to look up his past relationships and reconnect to find out what it means all these years later. After Rob begins finding out what ended all of his past relationships, he begins to gain a better perspective on what has been going on with his relationship with Laura.

Week 1
Riah, So here is my list of themes from High Fidelity. The good news is that i have a lot of themes from the book, and the bad news is that I have a lot of themes from the book. Could you please help me narrow down my list a bit so that I get good results from this project? I’m not sure how familiar you are with this book but I tried to explain them a little in case you are not. Major themes in Nick Honby’s High Fidelity: 1. Concurrent and conflicting emotions Holding/ wanting two opposing ideas in your mind at the exact same time, “I want to be with this girl but I don’t want to be stuck with her forever too”
12
2. Music and Sorrow. At one point them main character Rob says something to the effect of: “I’ve been listening to wistful, sorrowful pop music all of my life and now I can’t tell if I relate to the songs because of my own heartbreak or if the songs are causing my heartbreak” 3. Commitment to another person and the finality of monogamy. This theme is about the fears Rob has with his current relationship. 4. List making The main character is constantly listing top five things, such as top five records, top five films, top five relationships etc. After a while it starts to seem slightly obsessive and borderline autistic. In my experience, record collectors are already borderline autistic spectrum people (obsessive, organized, collectors, irrational etc) so this seems rightfully fitting that a record store owner would be like this. 5. Ending relationships Including being dumped and feeling rejected, infidelity, breakup logistics. 6. Mining the past This book seems somewhat therapeutic to the author, in that he is analyzing all of his past relationships and talking about what went right and what went wrong in all of them. 7. Brutal honesty This theme is a little different because it is actually seen in the book visually through the heavy use of parenthesis. To me this implies that what is outside of the parenthesis is true, but what is in the
parenthesis is even truer- hence the title of the book High fidelity. (Fidelity is already true, so how do you have ‘high’ fidelity?) I also have a couple of visual metaphors that I think would be kinda cool specifically for an author’s reading poster, But I’m slightly afraid that I’m getting kind of cliché with it. Anyways they are: A picture of a dump or dumpster a confessional booth picture of archives therapists office anything to do with mining and excavation Exit signs by a door.... Admittedly these are kind of half baked however, I would appreciate if you could jut tell me if I’m on the right path or not. Anyways I think thats it. You can respond either to this email or to ericnishioka@gmail.com Thanks a ton, I really appreciate any feedback you may have. Have a nice day:) -Eric Nishioka 13 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Eric, I think 1, 3, and 4, sound the most promising. However, if you like another one better any of them would work. Except maybe the breakup one (5) - too vague. Good job! Riah

Theme 2: The Finality of Monogamy (Metaphor images)

For the entire project there was a complete ban on borrowing any imagery found in the book.

Theme 3: Examining the past (metaphor images)

Understanding the moving pieces of a visual metaphor was the hardest part about this stage. This was in part due to the fact that the metaphor/themes were based off were incomplete sentences.

It became apparent during the critiques that the 1990’s David Carson Grunge-Style would be the most interesting and appropriate direction to take the poster.
Week 2
Themes as sentences:
(complete)
32
riting out the metaphors as W complete sentences helped the idea-generation and image-making processes. This was because it allowed me think of a metaphor image as two moving pieces working together within the same image, rather than an image of a topic that is somehow related to another topic.
The Three Themes

This theme is about…

The simultaneous & conflicting emotions that males experience in relationships
This theme is about…
3
The anxiety of feeling stuck in a relationship.

The possible results of examining the past.

Week 2
36
This week had us start to incorporate the visual language of the time period that the book was written in. High Fidelity was first published in 1995.
Revised Metaphors
37
This 3D hidden image generator was an attempt at using a visual trope of the 90’s to convey the idea of examining the past and finding a hidden message.

A SNAKE WITH TWO HEADS
48
(two headed) Snake Research
A two headed snake is a metaphor for the two different directions that the main character Rob wanted to take in the book. A snake was the chosen animal because of the allusions to temptation sneakiness and certain male parts.

After studying a lot of grunge era work, I noticed the heavy use of texture and laying to create an image.
53
Week 3
54
6 X 9 Compositions
I still liked the idea of an archive as a metaphor for the book, but I was beginning to see that the metaphor did not convey enough action in its meaning to warrant spending the rest of the project working on.

6” X 9” Compositions

Week 3
58
6” X 9” Compositions
The tree stump served as a good metaphor for “The results of examining the past” because it communicated both the past and love in one image. However, if I were to do it over again I would have somehow indicated the counting of the rings as an analog for the act of examining the past.

At this point I had to choose which poster I would move forward with into the color printing phase. I chose the snake because that was the one that I got the most positive feedback from. Eric Nishioka Mar 5 Hey Riah, It's Eric from your com studio class at Otis. I was just wondering if you could comment or give a little input on the direction I'm thinking about going with the my com studio snake poster. It's still in the test phase, but I definitely like the use of the type surrounding the snake, but am a little worried that it might take away from the effectiveness of the image and readability, or that it might flat out be not as good as the one I hung up on the wall Monday. Anyways here's the links to some of the tests I did this morning: new: http://octobernishioka.com/comstudio/snake.jpg and here's a link to the one I hung up on the wall yesterday: http://octobernishioka.com/comstudio/snake_2.jpg Thanks so much, any feedback you can give would be greatly appreciated. Hope you have a nice day and I look forward to hearing form you. Best, -Eric RiahMar 5 to me Hi Eric, I think this new one is probably more in line with the book. It looks pretty good. You may want to refine the type a bit, in terms of the hierarchy. The small type at the bottom is kind of floating in places - not sure how you want to fix that. It also seems a bit bunched up in the lower left compared to how the rest of that small type is floating. The black background is better.

Options for Final
After receiving a critique from a teacher I deiced not to use the hand done lettering version [left]. This was because the feed back I got said that it looked a little too much like a rock concert flyer and not enough like book reading.
91
I printed this one in large scale black & white to hopefully make it easier to narrow down my decision, but instead it just made it harder for me to choose.
Week 7
Final Poster 92
Picking a version of the final poster was a difficult decision to make. I receiving a lot of responses from a lot of different people and I deiced to stick closer to my original idea, However this version I focused more on balancing how the type interacted with the image. Overall I am very happy with how this poster turned out and am glad I had the final week to make the changes that I did.
