Zine Project Fall 2012
Student Project @
4 \ Eric Nishioka \ Process Book \ Com. Studio I
Introduction: Hello! Welcome to my process book for the 1st project in Communication Studio 1, also known as, “The Zine Project. This book is a detailed record of all of the work that went into the research, concepts, and creation of the final product. The end result of this project was a printed zine filled with a final selection of 20 original images, arranged in 9 spreads with a front and back cover. There was also a complete prohibition on the use of computer-generated art for this assignment. The driving force behind this task was the individual art movement each person was assigned in the beginning of the class. My movement was Surrealism. I enjoyed working with and becoming inspired by this movement because it allowed for a wide and dynamic range of interesting image making approaches, some of which you will see in the following pages. The end result of this project was a very short run of 15 black and white copies of the zine for each student in the class, plus 1 full-color copy for the teacher. Although, at times, the labor intensive image making part of this project could be arduous, I am happy to have been pushed as far as I was. During this process I learned a lot about the idea of refinement and composition in multiple analog formats, and I learned a little more about what I am capable of as a designer. I hope you enjoy the following pages as much as I have enjoyed making them!
Sincerely,
Eric Nishioka

Week 2: Thumbnails For the second week of this project we were shown brainstorming techniques and approaches such as the visual literacy matrix. It was used as a way to organize, ideate and sketch some of our initial images. The matrix on the following page shows the visual literacy matrix. The way it worked was we had to fill out 5 media/ material combinations on the top row and then 4 different recurring images and ideas related to our movement going down. The idea was to then join the two rows and column and create an original image from the material/idea combination.

Week 4: These 10 Images were chosen to be cropped because they were they had some of the most successful moments in the compositions from week 3. I thought it would be interesting to focus n those moments and experiment with a closer view of those ares.

Week 7: Final Zine + B&W Copies This page shows the final copy of the zine I turned into the professor. I packaged it into a plastic bag and attached a label to the back flap. The opposite page shows pictures from one of the black and white copies of the zine. I felt the colored paper was a successful solution for the black & white copies of the zine. This is because the paper really accented the white parts of the images to standout in the color of the paper. In the entire series I arranged all of the color pages differently as well, this is so each zine has its own unique color progression The lower image on that page also highlights the 5 hole hand stitching that I did for each of the 15 copies as well as the full color copy.
