The story of two passions:

HAIR AND PLANTS

It all started when Patrick Alès was a salon apprentice in Paris during the 1950s. He noticed that chemically-laden products were taking a serious toll on the hands of hairdressers and the hair of their clientele. The first seeds of his idea for a much gentler, less harmful range of hair products were quietly sown. After purchasing a home in the lush countryside of Southern France, Patrick Alès discovered the power of plants and decided to develop a botanical hair care line. In the attic he found old glass jars containing essential oils and dried plants collected by the previous owner, an herbalist and healer, and started researching their therapeutic benefits. Soon after, he began experimenting in his kitchen by mixing plant extracts in an old baker’s kneading-trough to rescue his clients’ dry, bleached-out locks in the sixties. That inspired his first products: HUILE D’ALÈS and PHYTO 7. In 1965, Patrick Alès open his very own salon near the Champs-Elysées, still open today, where his A-list clients such as Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis became loyal to his new botanical hair care brand. It was in 1967, when he introduced PHYTO PARIS to the public.

PHYTOTHÉRATHRIE As he was steadily building his reputation through his haircuts and later his “brushing” hair style (French word for blow dry) which he created in 1966, Patrick Alès was already thinking about avoiding the damage that chemicals used in professional products were causing to the hair and the hands of the hairdressers. With a motto that he will always keep: “Primum, Non Nocere” (first, do no harm), and a conviction that if plants have cosmetics virtues for the skin, they must also have some for the hair – Patrick Alès began to study plants with the most beneficial properties for the hair and scalp. THE SCALP

The very thin layer of skin that comprises the scalp is different from the skin on the body. The scalp’s skin holds an intricate network of blood vessels and nerve endings with a dense concentration of oil and sweat glands. HYDROLIPIDIC FILM The epidermis is covered with the hydrolipidic film, which protects against penetration of foreign substances and pathogenic germs. The hydrolipidic film is formed of elements derived from our body— sebum, sweat, and disintegrated keratinocytes—as well as external elements such as cutaneous flora, dust, etc. This film has a slightly acidic pH balance, approximately 5 on the scale, which is why it is commonly described as the skin’s “acid mantle.”

EPIDERMIS The epidermis is the outer layer of skin formed by layers of cells that are constantly multiplying. These are held together by “cement-like” lipids, called the stratum corneum, which ensures the impermeability and resistance of the skin’s surface.

DERMIS The dermis contains the hair bulb, the sebaceous and sweat glands, and the vascular and nervous networks. It holds the living part of the hair.

HAIR BULB The hair bulb is the lower expanded extremity of a hair that fits like a cap over the hair papilla, a knoblike vascular indentation of the bottom of a hair follicle.

SEBACEOUS OIL GLANDS

Each hair shaft is associated with a sebaceous gland. The sebaceous glands manufacture sebum,

a combination of different fatty substances that work to protect the skin and the hair cuticle to ensure sufficient moisture retention.

SWEAT GLANDS

The sweat glands are small tubular glands that secrete sweat through tiny openings in the skin, called pores. Sweat participates in the formation of the hydrolipidic film and in the thermal regulation of the body.

HYPODERMIS

The hypodermis is the innermost and thickest layer of the skin. It is composed of cells that accumulate and store fats, known as adipocytes. These cells are grouped together and are separated by connective tissue.

THE HAIR

Hair is made up of keratinized cylindrical proteins, which emerge on an angle from the hair bulb. Hair has two separate structures: the hair follicle and the hair shaft, the latter being visible to the naked eye. THE HAIR FOLLICLE (FIG. 1) The hair follicle is approximately 0.2 inches below the epidermis, in a pouch-like structure that contains several layers with various functions. Its innermost part is characterized by a bulb-like swelling which contains the papilla and capillaries that nourish the cells. The hair bulb is the only living element and the cells actively multiply at this level. As they migrate towards the surface, they gradually keratinize to form the hair shaft.

A sheath surrounds the bulb, proctecting and molding the growing hair shaft. The shape of the sheath will determine the hair texture â&#x20AC;&#x201D;straight, wavy or curly. Every hair follicle is associated with one or several sebaceous glands that secrete sebum. The sebum lubricates the hair, giving it shine and flexibility.

The cuticle is the outermost layer and is comprised of tightly packed, overlapping scales similar to shingles on a roof. The cuticle forms the translucent, protective layer of the hair shaft and maintaining its integrity is of fundamental importance. As cuticle cells age, they become progressively flatter and may stifle the growth of the cortical cells. HAIR SHAFT

KERATIN (84%) ❙ Hair is made up of fibrous proteins called keratin. ❙ M ost of the keratinous proteins provide hair with its elasticity and are present within the cortical cells and the cuticle. ❙ Hair protein is made up of 18 amino acids, the most important being cystine, rich in sulfur. It gives hair its strength. ❙ W ithin the cortex, the keratin is organized into protofibrils, composed of 4 chains of keratin. This assembly is held together by bonds or bridges between the atoms of the different chains. These bonds may be of variable strength: weak bonds such as hydrogen bonds can be distinguished from the stronger ionic bonds and sulfur bridges. It is by acting on these bonds that the shape of the hair can be modified.

❙ P resent in the intercellular cement of the cortex and the cuticle, they provide the hair with a certain impermeability and ensure the cohesion of the fiber. ❙ P resent in the sebum produced by sebaceous glands, lipids work to protect the scalp and lubricate the hair, thus preserving its suppleness and sheen.

WATER ABSORPTION (12%) ❙ H air also contains water which, although it makes up only 12-18% of the hair, is extremely important for its physical and chemical properties. ❙ The absorption of water gives hair its required moisture content which is essential for hair’s health. ❙ It takes an average of 30 minutes for the hair to be fully saturated.

LIPIDS (3%) ❙ Some lipids are produced in the hair bulb while others are supplied by the sebaceous glands. ❙ Moisture-rich lipids ensure shiny, healthy hair. ❙ Produced in the hair bulb, they are formed from sterols, fatty acids and ceramides.

Hair growth

CYCLE

Hair follicles grow in repeated cycles and the time these cycles last varies for each individual. Each hair has a life cycle of approximately 3 to 5 years, and each follicle should have 25 life cycles. Each cycle can be broken down into 3 phases and each hair passes through these phases randomly, independent of the neighboring hairs. ANAGEN (growth phase) The anagen or growth phase can vary from three to five years. At this time, the cells in the root of the hair are dividing rapidly. Approximately 85% of all hairs are in the growing phase at any one time. Hair grows approximately 0.4 inches per month and six inches per year. Some individuals have trouble growing their hair beyond a certain length because their growth phase is shorter than others. Duration: 3 to 5 years.

CATAGEN (transitional phase) At the end of the anagen phase, the hair enters into the catagen phase which lasts about 1 to 3 weeks. Approximately 3% of all hairs are in this transitional phase at any one time. Hair growth then ceases, and the outer hair follicle shrinks and causes the papilla to break away and become attached to the root. Duration: 1 to 3 weeks.

TELOGEN (fall phase) The telogen phase follows the catagen phase and normally lasts about 5 to 6 weeks. Approximately 10-15% of all hairs are in this phase at any one time. During this time the hair does not grow but stays attached to the follicle while the dermal papilla stays in a dormant or resting phase below. At the end of the telogen phase, the hair follicle reenters the anagen phase. The dermal papilla and the base of the follicle join together again and a new hair begins to form. If the old hair has not already been shed the new hair pushes the old one out and the growth cycle starts all over again. About 50-100 telogen hairs are shed throughout 1 day. Duration: 5 to 6 weeks.

PHYTO GLOSSARY ACACIA COLLAGEN – An extract obtained from the leaves and fruits of the Australian Acacia tree. Rich in oligosaccharides and protein, this botanical powerhouse works to hydrate and protect hair from external stresses, while smoothing the cuticle. ALMOND MILK – The result of grinding, soaking and filtering almonds with water; helps to soften and gently hydrate hair. ALTHAEA – Althea Officinalis, commonly known as the marshmallow plant, is rich in emollient properties to soften and heal. ANGELICA – Native to northern Europe and commonly used today for its pleasant scent, it has been used since the 10th century for anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, antibacterial, and stimulating properties especially on the scalp. Excellent detangler. APRICOT KERNEL Cream – Apricot is a very effective moisturizer, containing large quantities of sugar (sucrose, glucose, pectin, fructose and sorbitol). Very gentle, it can be used by even the most sensitive skin, including children’s skin. It also contains many vitamins, such as vitamin E that has an antioxidant role, thus protecting the skin from external assaults. APRICOT PULP – It is rich in oleic acid and linoleic acid unsaturated fats that soften and hydrate. Also helps improve the condition of the scalp. BAMBOO MARROW – Native to East Asia and extracted from the core of the bamboo plant. It helps restore and balance the scalp’s sebaceous secretion while infusing vitamins and minerals. BANCOULIER Cream (Kukui Cream) – Extracted from the seed of the commonly known Kukui Nut Tree, native to Polynesia. Helps to restructure, protect, and nourish with essential fatty acids, powerful anti-oxidants and vitamins A, E and F. BAOBAB OIL - Derived from the seeds of the Adansonia tree native to Africa.
