On The Turn
A leading stylist in Northern Ireland, Eve has a wealth of experience in the industry. Each month she offers a fashion focus into the most coveted designers, trends and styles of the season. It’s that ever-confusing time of year. One day the hazy sun is peering through the trees, the next the chill in the wind and dipping temperatures are enough to break out the woolly knits. apps are decidedly undecided and wholly unreliable, as our Northern Irish weather keeps us on our (slightly nippy) toes. This transitional time of year is sent to test us, where heat wave or hail are possible. So what is the best approach? Your guess is as good as mine, but here are a few little tips to dressing for the ‘pre-season’. The key to achieving a semistylish ensemble during this make or break period is to mix and match your new autumn/ winter purchases with your goto summer staples. Take your favourite summer smock dress or silky slip, add skinny jeans and a little leather jacket for an eclectic blended look. It is these go-to jackets and soft layers that will see your transitionaldressing woes solved. The addition of a light layer, such as a belted mac or trench coat will immediately update your look to wet-weather-ready. This AW’14 sees knits, coats and jackets in all

Now established as a firm favourite on the Autumn Winter fashion calendar, the sell-out event is returning for a third successive year, on Thursday 25th September. RIVER MEDICAL REVEALS MOST IN-DEMAND SKINCARE TREATMENT And Secret To Younger Looking Skin River Medical's state-of-theart clinic on the Lisburn Road in Belfast offers a wide suite of skin and body treatments previously unavailable to us in Northern Ireland. The clinic is long established in the Republic of Ireland, specializing in a comprehensive range of both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures. One of the most in-demand treatments right now is the Fraxel Dual treatment. Registered General Nurse and Clinic Manager, Aoibhin Cronin told us: "The Fraxel Dual is a fantastic anti-ageing treatment as it targets the main issue that causes our skin to age - sun damage. The treatment is excellent for all skin types as it improves the general quality and tone of the skin and really helps keep the signs of ageing at bay, treating pigmentation/ skin discolouration and sun spots, as well as poor skin quality and fine lines and wrinkles. It's simply a super anti-ageing treatment."
18
DID YOU KNOW? We're actually paying the price for the amazing summer we had, as a golden tan, however appealing is actually the result of injury to the skin. The sun's ultraviolet light damages the fibers or "elastin" in the skin. When these fibers break down, the skin begins to sag and lose its elasticity. Too much sun can also cause irregular pigmentation, where some areas of the skin appears darker while others look
lighter. This can have a very ageing effect on the face. HOW DOES FRAXEL WORK? Fraxel works by treating a fraction of the skin at a time where by only the area in need of attention is treated. The treatment introduces a controlled thermal injury to the skin which stimulates the skin to heal itself, causing a surge in new collagen and elastin production. River Medical exclusively

uses what's called the Fraxel Dual technology which uses two wavelengths of laser light. One that targets issues on the surface of the skin like pigmentation, brown spots and melasma; and a second that penetrates much deeper to treat poor texture, fine lines and wrinkles and acne scarring. RESULTS Results are both immediate and progressive, with optimal results occurring approximately
three months after the treatment. At River Medical only a Registered General Nurse will carry out your treatment so you know you are in safe hands. One River Medical patient told us: "I just celebrated my 51st birthday and I've never felt so good. I've been told that I look younger now than I did five years ago! I just cannot believe the results. I would go as far to say that my skin feels like brand new skin - after just

At River Medical, we recommend PCA Skin's Weightless SPF45 or Hydrator Plus SPF30". "Everyone can benefit from getting an expert, medical opinion and availing of a free skin consultation with one of our Nurses at the clinic, to find out how you could dramatically improve your skin", added Aoibhin. where show goers can browse and buy on-trend fashion and accessories from the shows over sushi and sumptuous cocktails, both before and after the runway presentations.” Karen Anderson, brand manager for West Coast Cooler, which sponsors the event, added: “It’s that time of year again and it’s going to be another very busy season of show-stopping fashion, as well as lots of fun off the runway too. ULfashion Why did you set up the By Caprice business? When I turned 30 I thought 'holly smokes', I have got to think of something that I'm passionate about that people can buy into. Lingerie worked so well and I used modeling as a platform to turn myself into a businesswoman.
Ulster Life talk to Caprice about her new A/W14 lingerie and swimwear collections. Your lingerie and swimwear collections for AW14 are stunning-what is your inspiration for the collections? We go to Paris and see what’s there. I pay a lot of attention to colour trends. You have to educate yourself and see that’s going on trends-wise. I also really listen to my customers and see what sells season on season, from what blocks sell to colourways. Who is the By Caprice customer? Women that buy By Caprice are not compulsive buyers, she wants

outstanding quality and value for her money. She is fun, fashionable and confident in her own skin. What is unique about By Caprice products? At By Caprice our designs are unique, fashionable, functional and fun. When you buy By Caprice there is a definite signature in terms of material, bright colours and prints. We pay a lot of attention to fits to ensure comfort and support and use the most stunning fabrics and textures. This shows in the end product.
What highs and lows have you experienced running By Caprice? The highs are seeing my business grow from an idea into an international company that sells in five different countries. My customers are the most important aspect to my brand and I also love their positive feedback and we have a loyal customer base. Gosh I have learnt a lot – the biggest thing has been how currency exchange rates work. I now look at rates every day to see how our costs will be affected. They are always up and down and I have to keep my eye on the ball. Before the recession By Caprice experienced massive growth. I made 50-80% margins and was paying for my stock every two months. To the factory I was paying about £1.2m, now, if you add on 50- 80% mark up as my margin, add that on top of £1.2m, I was doing very well for a start-up business. When the recession hit in 2008 I didn’t really think about currency fluctuations. In mid-2008, I was buying stock for my business when you could get about $2 to the pound. The size of the order meant I was out of pocket by about £1.6m, just in

Shine bright like a diamond with Shine like a Celeb I
could write about makeup for hours, till the point where I have to be told to stop but when it comes to body care products I am sometimes stumped on what to write. When I tried my first sample of shine like a celeb I knew this would be an easy review to write.
WHAT IS IT? A luxurious body cream that will give you the type of inner body confidence that a celebrity feels when they know how good they look. By using this irresistibly indulgent body cream with its evocative and sensual fragrance, which leaves your skin shimmering with a delicate diamond sheen, we guarantee not only will you feel like a celeb you will shine like one. The scent is what entices you straight away it’s a sort of musk vanilla ESSENTIAL VITAMINS A – Promotes fresh new skin and aids in strengthening the protective tissue of the skin. B – Helps the skin rejuvenate itself by also giving a more even skin tone. Continued use reduces the signs of aging.
C – Boosts collagen synthesis in the skin and is an effective highly potent treatment against wrinkles and fine lines. E – Reduces the effects of strength marks, fine lines and protects skin cells from UV light, pollution and other damaging free radicals. The perfect thing about this is there is no transfer so you can hug your friends, wear that little black dress or sit on your posh friends vintage chair without leaving a trail of shimmer behind. Even when I spilled my over priced but totally delicious cocktail over my leg, it didn’t seem to budge. So i would imagine that if I was on holidays I could wear it to the
beach and still be able to get in and out of the water. After a shower and wash with body wash it does easily come off. Another great selling point for this product is that is made by EU certified ingredients and is produced in the EU by a certified UK manufacturer. I loved this product so much that I even stock it on my web site, it is priced at £48 pound but is on offer on www.orlaghmaye.com for £35, we are the only exclusive retailer in Northern Ireland.

Anchors Aweigh...
This month, Ulster Life’s Cathy Martin acquires a taste for “Anchorage” in Holywood. It’s not unusual for a fish restaurant to feature in a seaside town, but Holywood in County Down hadn’t really had its own dedicated seafood restaurant until the arrival of The Anchorage earlier this year; and, like its food, it’s been worth waiting for. Situated just off a high street full of bustling cafes, this chic
46
and easy eaterie is a warm and welcoming alternative to the village’s lattes and tray bakes with its linen napkins and friendly staff. I opted for a lunchtime visit after a few failed attempts at last minute weekend bookings, and I was not disappointed, as the lunch offering was as good as any evening à la carte
I’d been to recently. And while Belfast city centre thrives on an increasing popularity in street food, small communities like Holywood and Ballyhackamore are seeing a steady growth in local dining with foodies who like to stock up on great value gourmet and then dander home to walk off the wine.
ULfood&drink
As sensible lunchers, we had no wine on our visit, but the list is a good one, and there are great fish accompaniments available on the wine menu. Just click here for a full list. For starter I enjoyed some delicious tiger prawns with pak choi bean sprouts and a Thai broth as well as an extra taster of crispy squid with Aioli, which was superb - in texture and in taste. My dining companion was in her third trimester of pregnancy and so avoided most of the shellfish but feasted on the smoked mackerel pate with pickled cucumber and wheaten bread. For mains, I had the chorizio infused battered scampi with triple cooked chips and a house salad while my friend went for the fillet of salmon with asparagus, champ and an amazing veloute of petits pois.
So tasty and yet so simple. The fish was perfectly done and my batter was a dream, the chorizio gave just the amount of flavour to the fresh prawns. I’ve been back since and enjoyed a really good smoked salmon. In my opinion, smoked salmon should be served either à la Suede, with some gradvalax; or else super simply, with a squeeze of lemon and popped onto some wheaten bread; and here, the Anchorage wins all my points, because the full flavour of the fish (smoked locally of course) was discovered and enjoyed. The local provenance of the fish (from Keenan’s in Belfast and Donaldson’s just down the road) warms the cockles (if you’ll excuse the fishy pun) as I love to see artisan producers and suppliers kept in business. In fact the fish isn’t the only thing which
is sourced locally – the restaurant also uses my favourite Abernethy Butter as well as Leggygowan and Kearney cheeses plus Carnbrooke meats for the delish carnivore options on the menu. All in all, our dishes tasted of truly flavoursome ingredients sourced locally, the presentation was top notch and the service got several stars from me and my self-confessed fusspot of a dining companion. With all starters at a fiver and mains at a tenner for lunch, my recommendation is to book early and stay late, it’s the kind of place worth making a trip to, if you can beat the locals at the booking game that is!

Galgorm is a front runner in the Down Royal style stakes Northern Ireland’s most stylish ladies will be jockeying for position at the Charles Hurst Premium Race Evening next month at Down Royal. Unbridled chic will be the order of the day as Northern Ireland’s leading spa resort, Galgorm, gets this year’s event off to a flying start by sponsoring the Best Dressed competition. Fashion, along with horse racing and first class hospitality, await the thousands heading to the fully-transformed, state-of-the art racecourse on Friday the 12th of September, reinforcing the venue’s position as Northern Ireland's number one draw for ladies with classic, winning style. Aside from the prestige of being named “Best Dressed” at the event, this year’s

winner will also be whisked off for a weekend of four star luxury at the Ballymena resort. Paul Smyth, General Manager of Galgorm Resort & Spa said; “We are delighted to be part of the Best Dressed Lady competition with Down Royal, and while picking a winner will be tough, we’re looking forward to a great day of racing. Down Royal is synonymous with good taste and style, and the state-ofthe-art facilities will provide a perfect backdrop to the glamour of the best dressed event”. Boasting some of the best facilities in Irish racing, Down Royal has undergone substantial investment over the past few years. General Manager Mike Todd says this day-long event
is one of the most hotlyanticipated by race goers here.. “This is one of the highlights of our year, and we’ve worked non-stop to provide a packed day of the best in horseracing and hospitality. It’s one of the most stylish events on the calendar and we look forward to working in partnership with the equally stylish Galgorm Resort & Spa.” It’s now easier than ever for racegoers to get to and from the venue with an exclusive coach service leaving the city centre an hour before the first race, and returning an hour after the last one. Departing from College Square North, the £10 return tickets can be booked through the Down Royal website www.downroyal.com

Lingnum Interiors
Lignum interiors specialise in fit-out / manufacturing of pubs- restaurants around the globe. One common factor that we have come across in our wide experience is the problem of odours in pubs/bar restaurants since the smoking ban came into effect,as the smell of cigarette smoke no longer masked the more unpleasant odours. To deal with this common complaint that many of our clients, we were looking for a way to neutralise these odours and expels a fresh smelling scent. 50
In our search we have found a 100% eco friendly slow release product that can be used in a number of ways and areas from doorways, entrance halls, main bar and the toilets areas. It can be clipped to air con units / heaters / fixed under hand dryers / doorways to welcome customers with a fresh & pleasant smelling environment rather than stale beer! We are famous for our great breads, cheeses, drink and have our fair share of talented cooks, quality cookery schools, restaurants and locally produced goods that we all find irresistible. “From Cuan Oysters to Finnebrogue Venison and from Lough Neagh Eels to Glenarm Salmon, some of our produce is slowly but surely becoming recognised as best in class. Bread Be Gone... By Eve Brannon Sponsored by BODY VIBES For as long as I can remember, the advice has been that a diet low in fat and high in grains, is a healthy one. The classic food pyramid, on classroom walls and doctors’ waiting rooms, has breads, grains and starches as its base – the largest staple of our diet. The message is to
58
predominantly consume wheat and grain based foods – and we’ve been listening. Breads alone take up a substantial 60% of Western societies breakfast and lunch components. As a result, wheat production has tripled in the last 50 years to try and keep up with our insatiable
demand for ‘healthy’ grains and bread production. But is it working? And if so, why are we suffering from more food intolerances and weight gain than ever before? Let’s look at bread: what is it and what the effects of its mass consumption are. It has
ULfitness been recognised for some time that white bread and refined or processed grains in general aren’t particularly nutritious. Of recent years, nutritionists and dieticians globally have encouraged us to choose wholegrain varieties instead. However grains, especially gluten grains like wheat, have come into the spotlight and under scrutiny of late, as research unfolds that bread and other sources of gluten grains are unnecessary to a varied diet and can be potentially harmful, with little nutritional value. Wheat contains a large amount of a protein called gluten. Gluten is found in wheat, barley and rye, as well as many common food additives. It gives dough that addictive elasticity and baked goods their delicious chewiness! Also found in pizza, pancakes and cookies for example, its name says it all: gluten, for its glue-like properties. Evidence is mounting that a significant percentage of the population are sensitive to gluten, whether that be full celiac disease (caused by an overactive immune response to gluten in the small intestine) or a mild intolerance. When we eat bread that contains gluten, the immune system in our digestive tract ‘attacks’ the gluten proteins, which in turn, can damage the wall of the digestive tract, causing pain, bloating, gas, lethargy and stool inconsistency (diarrhoea or constipation). As if this wasn’t enough, wheat products like bread are mostly highly processed, meaning they have a less complex molecular structure, resulting in food getting broken down and absorbed into the bloodstream at a faster rate. This results in a spike in insulin levels and excess glucose
being stored as fat. The following crash in blood sugar levels creates sharp hunger pangs and cravings, which can lead to overeating. From a personal viewpoint, I chose to reduce gluten and wheat from my diet by cutting out bread 14 months ago. I don’t suffer from celiac disease so going entirely gluten-free wasn’t necessary for my needs. However, I had increasingly found that eating bread brought on discomfort and negative digestive symptoms, including bloating, pain and an overall feeling of ‘puffiness’. Bread, although delightful at times and highly addictive (I adore a great sandwich), didn’t leave me with a feeling of wellbeing, rather that I had consumed a refined product that my body did not need and could not effectively process. This month I went on a foreign holiday with friends, and as always, allowed myself treats and relaxed a little from my usual diet – one evening when I was particularly hungry and looking forward to a big meal, I made the mistake of ‘enjoying’ some bread brought to the table before the dinner. This ‘treat’ could not have been less of one, within a couple of hours I was greatly bloated, sore and very uncomfortable. This one instance in 14 months has confirmed bread is not for me. If you ever suffer
these types of symptoms, or feel that your toast at breakfast or sandwich at lunch doesn’t give you the sustenance or energy you’d like, why not try cutting out bread for a 30 day period and see if it brings you the same benefits I’ve found? If so, trust me you’ll not look back! Initially, switching to a bread-free diet is frustrating and can seem close to impossible, as it’s all around us in adverts, on menus and in supermarkets. However with time and a little creativity, it becomes easy to fill that loaf-shaped void and truly enjoy the whole-foods that can replace bread in meals. Ulster Life invites you to join the ‘BREAD-FREE 30 day challenge’!

Just a year ago, Little Eglantine created the flower girl dresses and pageboy outfits for Claire Lademacher's wedding with HRH Prince Felix of Luxembourg. In August, she made the page boy outfit for the wedding of one of Prince Charles’ and Camilla Parker Bowles’ best friends’ daughter… And for the first time ever, her work is now available in Northern Ireland, exclusively at The White Gallery, voted in the Top Ten wedding boutiques in Ireland. This opulent and glamourous wedding boutique is nestled in the quaint village of Burren just outside Newry city, Co Down, N Ireland. The designer says: “Irish people have always been coming to me telling me they could never find such flower girl and communion dresses in Northern Ireland. I am now glad to come to them!”

Rachel Morgan, Proprietor of The White Gallery, comments: “We are delighted to welcome Little Eglantine to the boutique. The flower girls’ dresses are adorable; made from luxurious silks they are fit for every little princess!” The White Gallery will exclusively carry seven of her designs: Chloe, Caroline, Alix, Constance, Adele, Daphné and Isobel. For further information on Little Eglantine we invite you to watch the video below that was made for Luxe.

Unfortunately cancer is something that has touched the families of both our agency director and our manager, not to mention those of many of our models.
