eel is situated in East Belfast, not far from the iconic Titanic Quarter. The spacious three story building houses a wide range of collections from the classic to the ‘edgy’ so there is always something to suit everyone’s own unique style. Peel caters for all age groups and for sizes 6-20. Many of the collections are exclusive to this store. It is like a mini department store with everything you need under one roof whilst still retaining the intimacy of a small independent shop with excellent customer service. Peel must surely have invented the concept of ‘personal dresser’ as everyone is assured of a warm welcome, generous hospitality and above all honest advice. The staff are expertly trained and will always go that extra mile to ensure you achieve the best look possible to suit your lifestyle and your budget. Peel could be described as one of the few longstanding, elegant stores in Belfast where the collections are seen as different , wearable, covetable and flattering. The vast majority of Peel customers shop only in Peel as they can buy a total look including jewellery, bags and

ADVERTORIAL shoes, ’in a one stop shop’. If you want to spend a day ‘in the East’ why not visit The Titanic Quarter, have lunch in one of the many fabulous eateries on the Upper Newtownards Road and then enjoy a little retail therapy, chez Peel! If you are pressed for time why not ring ahead and they will have garments selected for your perusal. If you have your partner in tow – don’t panic they have lovely squashy sofas, coffee and tea on tap and a selection of newspapers and magazines, to keep everyone happy. The other best kept secret is Peel 2 – the sale shop which sells all the end of lines of designer collections at up to 80% OFF! It is just 40 yards from the main store. You can’t fail to bag a bargain! Parking in the area is easily available and it is free or grab a taxi for around £5 from the city centre, just 2 miles away. The philosophy of the proprietor, Elaine, is that everyone is given VIP treatment in both shops and that they

should only buy what they fall in love with. She says shopping

at Peel should be a happy and memorable experience.

T

his month is FASHIONWEEK for me, so it’s time to get my #gameface on. And what better example to follow than the queen of the catwalk herself Cara Delevigne, who chooses to have a Venus Legacy facial before and in between fashion shows and fashion weeks. Venus is exclusively available in Northern Ireland at The Skin Clinic on Belfast’s Lisburn Road, so I popped along there to see whether the hype lived up to the reality. The salon itself is discreetly located in Chadwick Street with the large Tesco store being the main point of reference on the map… I upped some stairs and went in to meet Ruth who immediately put me at ease and welcomed me with some chat about my typical skincare regime and routine before explaining the process of the treatment. First up, I was going to have some microdermabrasion to clear off as many dead skin cells and debris as possible to optimise the benefits of the Venus element of the treatment. Anyone who has had microdermabrasion will know that comfortable it ain’t! But with that out of the way I prepared for Venus Legacy

20

w w w. m y u l s t e r l i f e . c o m

Spa Sleuth By Cathy Martin machine to work its wonders. After applying some plant based gel across my face, Ruth held the multi-fingered Venus probe in her hand and circulated it across the skin of my face and jawline for 30 minutes. It felt warm as it moved around and actually quite hot if she paused at all, but never uncomfortable, however it is definitely not a facial you can have a wee

sleep in - this is a power facial! The probe was busily emitting radio frequency waves into my skin along with simultaneous pulsed magnetic fields – both of which were penetrating deep into the lower layers of the dermis where all the magic happens. The Venus machine’s patented 4D technology pairs these non-invasive radio frequency treatments

BEAUTY with pulsed magnetic fields energy to stimulate collagen production for rejuvenated skin. In more simple terms, a therapeutic heat matrix is produced over the skin, causing a thermal reaction within the skin’s tissue, and stimulating the body’s natural healing response – the growth of collagen. As collagen is located deep within the dermis layer of the skin, some alternative collagen-stimulating treatments can be invasive and damage the outer epidermis layer, but the use of both radio frequency and magnetic fields simultaneously delivers fast, homogeneous heating deep in the dermis where collagen is located without damaging the epidermis. Pulsed Magnetic Fields technology has been used in traditional medicine for decades and is scientifically proven with regard to its regenerative properties, especially for scarring. I was complimented on my skin at least 4-5 times the day after my treatment, and continue to be complimented two weeks on – which is great as many modern treatments require several consecutive treatments to see full benefits, but I think I definitely benefited from just one!

The great thing about Venus is that it is multifunctional and can be used to work on cellulite in legs and bums as well as for contouring the abdomen and smoothing out stretched or tired skin. I for one am keen to try its super effects on the body and promised Ruth I’d be back for more! The Skin Clinic is located at 385 Lisburn Road. To book, contact grace@theskinclinic. eu or call 07553 364 947 This month is also Mother’s Day, so the products I’m recommending are all about the mamma! I am definitely hoping for a wee something from Clinique or Clarins from my little one, so here are some hints and recommendations from me… I’ve been a fan of Clarins Eau Dynamisante since I was 16 and the scent reminds me

of my youth, and gloriously happy summers in France, so this gift set (£33) would be ideal for me. I also love Clarins serum, and their Mother’s Day serum gift sets (£56 – 30ml and £70 – 50ml) are a dream for those seeking an elixir of another kind! I also love these fun Clinique sets for Mother’s Day too – they come in two colours and for two different skin types, with the fabulous sonic brush being the main component. In fact the set’s price – at £79 – is basically the price of the sonic cleansing brush itself, so the foaming cleanser, purifying toner and Dramatically Different Moisturizer are essentially free – what’s not to love!? Happy Mother’s Day, Happy St Patrick’s Day and Happy Easter everyone – it’s going to be a busy month! w w w. m y u l s t e r l i f e . c o m

I

t looks like we are set for a seductive spring this year with the new season looking slinkier than ever, as nightwear reigns as the latest outerwear. There is a leading SS’16 trend that allows (in fact encourages) us to stay in our nighties and dressing gown all day long… yes please! Now we’re not 22

talking fleecy onesies. This trend is more sensual than snug, as statement night time negligee breaks out of the bedroom. Hidden functional hold-in underwear is over; this season’s selection is loose, silky smooth – and on show for all to see. Bring on the duvet days, as PJs and undies are transformed into wearable

Celine SS’16

FASHION luxurious lingerie styles found their way onto the spring/ summer catwalks this season, with an array of designers embracing the best of boudoir staples. At Celine we saw the triumphant revival of the slip dress, trimmed with delicate scallop lace in a classic monochrome palette. While at Givenchy onlookers were treated to a truly chic pyjama party, as ivory spaghetti-strapped camisoles teamed with tailored black pants sloped down the runway, alongside elegant kimono robes and sparkling

silver slip shift dresses. If an everyday transitionaltake on the trend is more up your street, take note from Emilio Pucci, who layered ethereal slips over fine knits and paired with a flat sandal. Finding this trend a little too floaty and feminine? Toughen up a full-length slip dress by styling up with a bomber jacket and sporty shoe, à la Alexander Wang. Not shy when it comes to revealing their smalls, stars in the spotlight such as Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Chloë Sevigny continue to push fashion

items for day and night. Slinky robes, silk camisoles, plush pyjama trousers and

boundaries and showcase their underwear as outerwear, in varying ensembles from runway risqué to red carpet ready. By the volume of sleepwear spotted on the catwalk, it’s safe to say designers took this theme to a whole new level, but your bravery will dictate how much skin you dare to bare this spring. Just ensure your jammies or undies on show scream luxury not laundry day.

Beauty Culture MUM’S THE WORD FOR CAROLINE PURDY AT BEAUTY CULTURE

A

s a mum to a toddler I know how busy life can be with the juggling of everyday tasks, keeping focus in work, being a wife and trying to stay healthy. We tend to be more anxious and finding time for ‘me time’ can be difficult leading to feeling more stressed and heightened anxiety levels. As a Skincare Therapist

38

w w w. m y u l s t e r l i f e . c o m

I know that when you are stressed your adrenal glands start to play havoc with your skin. Stress can show on your skin in many ways including breakouts, puffy eyes, redness, irritation and premature ageing. Making time to look after your skin is not a luxury it is an investment. At home running a bath and adding Dermalogica Hydro-active Mineral Salts is

a great way to relax and treat the skin at the same time as this product both relaxes and exfoliates. An aromatic, stress reducing bath soak, containing ingredients such as naturally warming ginger and cinnamon to help ease the body into deep relaxation. Sea salts and Seaweed (Kelp) combine with enzymes and soothing essential oils such as lavender and sandalwood

BEAUTY

will leave your skin smooth. The delicate skin on our hands needs extra attention and is one of the areas that will show the first signs of ageing. I would highly recommend applying Dermalogica Multi vitamin hand and nail treatment cream especially at night to repair and condition the skin while you are sleeping. An intense, non-greasy treatment

of botanicals and vitamins to protect and repair chapped hands while strengthening nails against splitting and peeling. Contains no artificial fragrance or colour and is available in full and mini sizes, so you can pop it into your handbag for the daytime too. In the salon we would recommend having the Lava Shell Back Treatment as a fantastic way of relaxing.

These self-warming shells are used to massage the oils into your skin and the heat of the shells is also particularly good for relieving any aches, pains and muscle tension. Guinot’s Age Summum Facial treatment is also a great way to relax and unwind. The word ‘Summum’ in latin means the highest one can achieve. This facial will visibly reduce the signs of ageing with its deep exfoliation followed by a bespoke Vitamin C massage and pro-collagen mask. Total relaxation for 50 minutes as well as having fabulous results. After a course of three treatments the skin on average is 43% firmer and a 50% decrease in wrinkle depth. Gift cards for any amount are available to purchase in Beauty Culture, an ideal way to say thank you to the special women in our lives. Get 10% off a course of three Guinot Age Summum when UL mentioned at time of booking.

The Natural Look HOLISTIC APPROACH TO FACIAL PROCEDURES & TEETH AT MARTINA COLLINS CLINIC

B

otox and dermal fillers remain largely unregulated in the UK, but a new dental and facial aesthetic clinic owned by renowned dentist Martina Collins has become the only clinic in Belfast to be accredited by SaveFace, the regulatory body of safe facial aesthetic procedures. The clinic, which is situated

40

w w w. m y u l s t e r l i f e . c o m

on the Lisburn Road, is the first of its kind in Northern Ireland, combining cosmetic dentistry and medical facial aesthetic procedures in a safe, clinical environment. Martina said: “I started offering facial aesthetic procedures as part of my scope of general practice over ten years ago, but I saw a need for it in a safe

and clinical environment. Despite what some might think, facial aesthetics and dentistry sit very well together and, understanding the facial anatomy as well as how our faces age allows me to take a holistic approach to the face. Our aesthetics are not a sideline, this is what we do and what we specialise in. The clinic is completely niche and

BEAUTY

Martina has strived for it not to be defined by one or the other - skin or dental; her passion for both is what has made it an immediate success. “We take a less-is-more approach to our aesthetics and don’t advocate the overly ‘done’ look. I see injectibles as being very much an adjunct to great skin – they enhance what’s already there, because good skincare is a basis for everything, so we work with medi-cosmetics brands like Obagi to offer cosmeceuticals, some of which are by prescription. We are an

Obagi ambassador clinic, and are all qualified to give in-depth advice on skincare, including prescription skincare, something that I am very proud of. “When it comes to our dental treatments, we offer long term solutions for a variety of issues which allow for a healthy and happy patient. We try to maintain a holistic approach to dentistry and I would always prefer to offer - for example a teeth-straightening option over veneers if the situation allowed. We also offer a full range of cosmetic and general

dental treatments as well as our hygienist services. Every patient’s treatment is bespoke and tailored to suit their needs. As it should be.”

THIS WEEK DR DAVID MURNAGHAN LOOKS AT FACIAL AESTHETICS SUCH AS BOTOX AND DERMAL FILLERS.

f you’re feeling dismayed at the unwelcome effects that another year, and another season of excess, have taken on your looks, you might have begun wondering if there’s anything you can do about it. With that in mind, this month we ask 2016 Irish Dentistry Rising Star* Dr David Murnaghan about facial aesthetics such as Botox and dermal fillers, with an eye on reports of risky practice across the UK.

Are facial aesthetics worth the risk? It really depends on where you go to get them. There’s no reason whatsoever why patients should be putting themselves at risk because non-surgical treatments like Botox and dermal fillers are inherently safe procedures and there are clear guidelines for their use. For example, in the UK, Botox can only be prescribed by a qualified medical professional after a 58

w w w. m y u l s t e r l i f e . c o m

consultation with the patient – you can’t just walk into a clinic and get injected no questions asked, at least you’re not supposed to be able to. The problem is unqualified people are attracting patients with cut price treatments, ignoring the guidelines and causing life changing damage, as reported in The Times just before Christmas (http://www. thetimes.co.uk/tto/health/ news/article4645278.ece).

How do facial aesthetics work? Botox blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. It’s most often used on forehead lines, the lines around the eyes known as crow’s feet, and frown lines. Dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic

acid, a natural substance that attracts water to the skin and plumps it up. Hyaluronic acid depletes with age, so dermal fillers are simply a top up on the areas of your face most affected; usually fine lines around the nose, mouth, lips, cheeks and forehead. Both treatments are temporary and last around three months but longer with top-ups.

Who can I trust with my face? Dental practices are your safest bet. It makes sense when you think about it because dentists study the anatomy of the face for their entire careers and are probably more experienced than anyone at facial injections. On top of that many dental practices employ a medical doctor for facial aesthetics so the patient benefits from the combined experience of two disciplines. For example at Boyne Dental & Implant Clinic we have Dr Orlaith O’Daly, who is a GP, and myself doing the facial aesthetics work. You’ll find that responsible practitioners

EXPERT always seek subtle results and use their products sparingly with extreme care, never ever going for the ‘frozen face’ look. Another advantage of choosing a dental practice is they are run according to hospital grade clinical standards, which may not always be the case for high street beauticians. And when you’re in a building with experts in different types of cosmetic dentistry like at Boyne Dental & Implant Clinic, you’ll be advised if there are other ways you can complement your makeover at the same time.

When are Botox and fillers appropriate? Anyone over 18 can get facial aesthetics, but they are most popular with older patients because of their ability to smooth away the signs of ageing. Anti-wrinkle injections such as Botox reduce lines caused by movements in the face, which deepen with age. Fillers add volume and dampen static lines, and are especially effective on the lips.

on a night out he had been discussing how he would like someone part of the team to cover arts, theatre, entertainment and I offered my services. Being an avid theatre goer and loving the night life. I thought this would be the perfect hobby for me.

Is there a typical day and if so what might that look like? No such thing as a typical day in my life as a blogger. I fit events, productions, interviews in around my working life. Some days I can be on the go from 7am to midnight (actually

I love getting the insider knowledge on everything! You would think me a nosy person but I love meeting the actors, seeing how a show/night runs, speaking to the people involved with the business’ I cover and really feeling there enthusiasm for the job. Trying to keep my finger on the pulse and knowing the latest gossip; I think it’s part of my personality. It also feeds into my working life I can see trends and be able to bring them into my associated business, so it’s a win-win situation.

Have you any advice for someone wanting to get into blogging? I think you need to have an interest in what you write. So if you want to blog go for it don’t let anyone

PEOPLE hold you back but make sure it’s something you enjoy because although it may look like all fun, games and cocktails there is also a lot of man hours spent behind a computer and running around.

You’re chancellor of the exchequer for the day. What would you change to help business in NI? I am be slightly controversial here, working in the arts and enjoying all aspects of theatre, dance and visual arts. I would love to look at ways to help business and the arts in NI. Ideas like tax incentives for corporate social responsibility projects and partnerships with charity bodies. I would love to show how the arts as a whole feeds into the economy in so many ways and how business in NI can and will benefit.

What would you do if you won the lottery? Love this question! I discuss it weekly with colleagues. I love to travel, so first thing I would do is to book a flight somewhere new exotic, fun and chase the sun. Then I would of course

share it amongst my large family (I’m a child of 8) buy a new car and a new house, the usual checklist. Give some to charity and invest in some of the great organisations I’ve seen working throughout NI. Then I think I would have to work in some capacity so maybe I would turn my love of blogging into a full-time job or something like that. At the very least I would buy theatre membership all over the world lol! By the way I’m assuming I’m a multi-millionaire here!!

entley is building on the ever increasing global demand for the Continental GT with a suite of contemporary design updates and new exquisite features for its most successful model and the newcomer made its debut at the recent Geneva Motor Show. Refreshed with a complement of new exterior design features, aimed at sharpening the on-road presence of the iconic Grand Tourer. Certainly another step forward in terms of luxury, technology and performance since I drove the previous model and it was very impressive; very much a case of a car becoming even more desirable. Taking a closer look, a new front bumper combines with a smaller radiator shell and new, more pronounced fenders to lend a more assertive and confident stance to the front of the car. The fenders now feature a new vent, complete with a graceful metallic “B” adornment, which serve to emphasise and enhance the renowned Bentley power line that flows rearwards from the front arches. New bright chrome fender badges for the V8 S and W12 models now match those applied to the GT Speed. At the rear of the GT, the boot lid is now more 62

UL CARS: IAN LYNAS REPORTS ON THE BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT sculpted, with a pronounced aerodynamic profile to the trailing edge. The rear bumper has been reshaped and widened for an added sense of power, and now features full-width brightware. The V8 S and GT Speed also gain a new rear diffuser design to further differentiate the performance-focused members of the Continental family. The revisions to the exterior aesthetic are completed with the addition of new wheels to the range of 20” and 21” designs available. The standard wheel for the GT V8 and GT W12 becomes a new 20”, six-trispoke wheel, in painted finish for the V8 and bright machined for the W12. The Mulliner

Driving Specification wheel changes to a new 21” seventwin-spoke design, finished in Graphite grey with bright machined spokes. Finally, a new 21” five-spoke directional sports wheel joins the existing 21” design available for the V8 S and GT Speed. Enhancing the GT’s iconic silhouette further, three new paint colours are available: Marlin, a rich metallic blue, Camel, a soft golden tone and Jetstream, a light, bright metallic blue. The visual upgrades continue inside the superbly appointed cabin of the Continental range. A new and contemporary straightfluting pattern adorns the four generous seats, while the Mulliner Driving Specification

(standard on GT Speed) gains a tightened, “small-diamond” quilting pattern reminiscent of a tailored British jacket. Driver controls are all-new, with an optional, more ergonomic and sports-orientated steering wheel and larger gear-shift paddles incorporating tactile knurled metal embellishers. Brightware elements across the console are updated, the driver’s instrument panel receives new dials and graphics for a refreshed, more contemporary look, and the beauty of the new interior is now illuminated by LEDs. The centre console also features a new black gear lever surround, unifying the style of all driver controls. For V8 and V8 S

coupe models, a new hidden storage compartment is fitted between the rear seats, capable of accommodating and charging electronic devices including iPads. In addition to the changes to the standard specification, a new range of optional interior features has been developed. GT W12 and GT Speed models can now be specified with new, softer semi-aniline hide for the seat cushions and backrests, represent the highest quality of leather available in the automotive market and giving an even more comfortable, luxurious and natural feel. Two new leather colours join the Continental range for 2015 - Shortbread and Camel.

Furthermore, the headlining of GT V8 S, GT W12 and Speed coupe models is now available in Alcantara, colour matched to all 17 of the available interior hide colours. Onboard WiFi, providing connectivity to all handheld devices in the car is also now available across the Continental family. Power wise and under the revised skin of the Continental GT W12 lie three changes to the mighty six litre twin turbo W12 powertrain; a power and torque increase, from 575 to 590 PS to maintain the model’s reputation of effortless performance. The power upgrade is accompanied by improvements to fuel economy of up to 5%. The GT W12 now includes a variable displacement system and the new evolution is able to run at part throttle on six of its 12 cylinders to reduce fuel consumption without sacrificing refinement and offers lower CO2 emissions of 329 g/km and combined fuel economy of 20 mpg.

UL CARS: IAN LYNAS DRIVES THE UK CAR OF THE YEAR

T

he Mazda MX-5 is UK Car of the Year 2016, supported by Cox Automotive, whose UK brands include Manheim and Motors.co.uk. Having triumphed in the Best Open Top Car of the Year category, the latest generation of the world’s best-selling sports car beat off strong competition in the final round of voting to claim overall victory. The Japanese company achieved triple honours at the awards, with the Supermini of the Year title for the Mazda2 joining the MX-5’s twin accolades.

The very day that I received news of the winner I was actually test driving the new Mazda MX-5 and for me it is the one roadster with lasting ability having seen off the likes of the BMW Z3 in the past. The new Mazda MX-5 with its distinctive new front has become for many the perfect roadster; it is lightweight and so very engaging to drive. I found myself simply making excuses to get behind the wheel of this stylish two seater and for a car of its type boot space is better than one would expect. This is a car to whisk off somewhere nice for a

weekend, but if you ever are lucky to own one make sure you go where there are roads to really get to grips with this roadster and I can promise you will be rewarded. This is the fourth generation MX-5 and it is true in every way to the original spirit of the roadster. Commenting on Mazda’s success in the UK Car of the Year Awards, Jeremy Thomson, Mazda Motors UK managing director; “I am delighted that the all-new Mazda MX-5 has added another prestigious award to its growing tally of accolades. The MX-5 embodies all that is great about our w w w. m y u l s t e r l i f e . c o m

products. It is fun to drive character has earned it a place in the hearts of driving enthusiasts the world over.” The MX-5’s huge appeal was underlined by many members of the UK Car of the Year Award judging panel including myself. CAR’s Tim Pollard commented; “no other car launched in 2015 advanced the class standards so comprehensively, the Mk4 Mazda captures the essence of MX-5ness brilliantly. It is a fabulously polished and democratic sports car”. BusinessCar’s Paul Barker added that the MX-5 is; “still peerless in its ability to provide motoring joy on a budget.” Ian Lynas of Ulster Life; “down the generations the MX-5 has lost none of its core 66

values it has simply grown in terms of drive quality and sheer motoring enjoyment”. The Express’ Nat Barnes declared the MX-5; the best car I drove in 2015, the1.5 litre is perfect in almost every way,” while judge Anthony ffrenchConstant exclaimed, “delicious to gaze upon, beautifully engineered, eminently affordable, and positive proof that motoring pleasure need not be predicated on pure power alone.” In a tightly-fought contest for Overall UK Car of the Year 2016, the contenders ranging from the Smart Forfour to the McLaren 570S and the Mazda MX-5 triumphed over the Volvo XC90, with the Skoda Superb Estate taking third place.

Launched in 2014, the UK Car of the Year Awards are judged by 27 of Britain’s mostread motoring journalists. Each judge uses their expertise to pick out the top performer in 12 vehicle categories, before deciding the overall winner from their favourites in each class. New for 2016 was a media driving day featuring all category winners, hosted by Cox Automotive at its Manheim Bruntingthorpe auction centre in January.
