Therapie Clinic The Secret To Silky Smooth Skin Laser Hair Removal At Therapie Clinic Once you discover the benefits of laser hair removal, your beauty regime will never be the same again! Imagine no longer having to worry about painful, time-consuming, messy and let’s face it – expensive waxing and shaving, ever again? This is the joy of laser hair removal, a smooth and silky body, each and every day. Therapie Clinic, located on Carlisle Road in L/Derry and Queen’s Arcade and Donegall Place in Belfast is the country’s leading laser and skin clinic. Therapie uses only the most advanced tech nology in the world, using medical-grade lasers as opposed to Intense Pulse Light (IPL). What this means for you is superior results, quicker treatment times and most importantly of all, your safety. How does it work? The medical-grade laser emits wavelengths of light which is absorbed by the pigment in the hair (melanin). If the surrounding skin is relatively light compared to the colour
of the hair, then the entire energy of the laser will be concentrated in the hair shaft, effectively destroying it without affecting the skin or follicle. What is the difference between medical-grade laser and IPL? Medical-grade energy consists of a very specific type of light wave, the energy travels in a straight line making it very accurate and precise. IPL on the other hand uses a less intense, broader spectrum of light (it’s broken up) which means a less effective treatment, slower results and more sessions. Medical grade laser delivers superior results, requires fewer treatments and most importantly of all ensures patient safety. How many sessions are required? A course of six treatments is generally recommended and you will notice a marked difference after just 2-3 sessions.
4
Does it hurt? Therapie Clinic uses the Soprano XL BLU, medical-grade laser machine which offers pain-free removal of hair. Thanks to the patented technology of ‘Pain-Free, Hair-Free’, even sensitive areas can be treated without discomfort. In fact, because the laser is constantly in motion, many patients liken the treatments to a hot stone massage! Why choose Therapie Clinic? Therapie Clinic uses only the most ad vanced technology and most experienced of therapists. The clinic offers a price match guarantee, 0% interest as well as a free trial to ensure you are compatible to laser. Michael Quinn Ulster Life’s resident hair guru, michael quinn. Jasmine Hope: I’m getting married in December and I’m struggling to find the perfect hairstyle. I understand that an up style is the norm for weddings but I’ve never had one before and I’m not sure if I’d suit it or not. Can you recommend a look? Michael: Firstly, it is important that you get this done professionally as your hair on the day can make or break your overall look. An accomplished bridal stylist should be able to have a thorough discussion with you as to what suits the shape of your face, style of your dress and the theme of the entire wedding; they will put all these things together and come up with a suitable style to perfect your day.
Anna Johnston: I have been considering getting my hair cut for quite some time now. I’m so used to it being long that I don’t know what it would look like but I think it’s time for a change. I’m going back to university in September and I’d like to rock a new look on campus. Seeing Anne Hathaway’s new pixie cut has definitely sealed the deal for me but I’m worried about the upkeep. Michael: First of all, I recommend an extensive consultation with your stylist. As I’m sure you know, this is a very effective and dramatic look and it doesn’t suit everyone. After a consultation, your stylist will be in a position to suggest a style tailored to suit your face. Also, if you’re confident enough to pull it off, this style of hair looks very funky in all sorts of colours! For the upkeep, I recommend Joico Structure Twist Styling Gum – giving the freedom of flexibility through moveable texture, pliable hold and soft shine. Another product from the same range is the Structure Adapt Texture Paste; this adds pliable definition with a medium hold and matte finish. Styles can be reshaped as desired for day-long creativity.

Claire Moran: I’m ready to go back to blonde! I haven’t been blonde in a few years because I had a scare when I dyed my hair from dark brown the last time – unprofessionally. I think actress Blake Lively’s hair is amazing and I’d love to achieve this tone. I’m going on holiday in a few weeks and would love to show off my new hair on the beach. What do you think? Michael: You need to know that going from dark brown to blonde is a big deal and not something that can be achieved overnight. I recommend staying clear of DIY bleaching kits as this can ruin your hair – hopefully you’ve learnt your lesson after a previous mishap. It’s vital to get this done in a professional salon and to understand that the right tone for your skin colouring is important - not everyone will suit the same tone as Blake and your hairdresser will be able to advise on the correct tone. Postdying, I recommend Joico K-PAK RivitaLuxe, a first of its kind. This luxury hair treatment is clinically proven to instantly correct years of damage and protect against further damage. With each application, dry damaged hair becomes dramatically stronger, softer and more moisturised. Available at Michael Quinn Hairdressing for £14.95

Land of Giants Giant Audience, Giant Legacy For Giant Event Northern Ireland is catching its breath after the largest event of its kind ever staged here, Land of Giants, was performed in front of thousands of ecstatic audience members at the Titanic Slipways on Saturday night (30 June). The team behind the massive outdoor happening managed to keep quite a few surprises up their giant sleeves as an enthralled capacity-crowd followed every step of the epic story, despite the rain. Throughout the 45 minute night-time extravaganza the central character, Grace, took the audience on a thrilling journey visiting fictional characters from Northern Ireland’s history, starting in 1869, while referencing the many giants visible in our cultural and natural heritage, such as Harland and Wolff’s, Samson and Goliath and Cave Hill’s Sleeping Giant - which is allegedly the inspiration behind Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver. At one point the tiny star of the show took a dramatic charge from one end of the 150m stage towards the Titanic Building and after a breath taking leap, suspended from a crane barely visible in the dark skies, she appeared as an animated character on the Titanic Building which transformed into the pages of a massive storybook. The Titanic was also ‘raised’ on the site where it was built using pyrotechnics and spectacular light effects – much to the delight of the wowed audience. Throughout the show, snapshots of the lives and voices of the people of Belfast were narrated visually or in music, and the story touched on the hay day of the linen industry, the building of the Titanic, the First and Second World Wars – right the way up to the present year.
Moira Swinbank, Legacy Trust UK who part-funded the event said: “The people involved in delivering this event; from the volunteer performers, acrobats, actors to the costumiers, production and operations teams, and many more, have gained invaluable experience that truly can’t be bought. “The knowledge gained and contacts made will help develop their talents and prospects and ensure a bright future for events in Northern Ireland for many years to come.” Land of Giants was delivered by a consortium which included Belfast City Council, Beat Carnival, Belfast Community Circus and Young at Art and was funded by Legacy Trust UK with additional support from Northern Ireland Tourist Board, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Belfast City Council and Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure. Ruth Mackenzie, Director of Cultural Olympiad, said: Well done Belfast for the stunning images of the London 2012 Festival – these will go round the world and be an amazing legacy for Belfast.” Cian Smyth, London 2012 Creative Programmer, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, said: “This is a new and exciting era for outdoor arts events in Northern Ireland. An event of this scale and calibre, involving so many people, has never been staged here before and sets a high standard for the sector. The development of our arts performance and events sectors as a result of the show can’t be underestimated.” The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Gavin Robinson said: “Belfast really shone last night and the show was everything we thought it would be;
12
epic, exciting, colourful, breathtaking, and at times utterly moving; but most importantly it was about Belfast and its people who were the lifeblood of the story and the stars of the show.” Minister Carál Ní Chuilín said; “The success of last night’s show demonstrates our ability to stage large, world class events. I am sure this will be one of the highlights of the 2012 Festival. I want to congratulate everyone involved, and I know this was the result of many months of hard work. I am sure everyone who made it along to the Titanic slipway will have enjoyed the show and its mix of pyrotechnics, music and daring aerial performances.” Tourism Minister, Arlene Foster said: “People in Northern Ireland, whether locals or visitors, are just spoilt for choice over what to see and do at the minute. From the sell-out Irish Open and the Clipper Round the World Yacht race to amazing events such as the Land of Giants. We are continuing to show the world that we have so much to offer visitors and securing our place as a great country to visit.” Legacy Trust UK is an independent charity creating a lasting impact from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by funding ideas and local talent to inspire creativity across the UK. Land of Giants was part of London 2012 Festival, the spectacular 12week nationwide celebration running from 21 June until 9 September 2012 bringing together leading artists from across the world with the very best from the UK.

Doodle with Noodles Art Competition Draws Inspiration from Athletes With massive sporting events like Wimbeldon, the Tour de France, the Open and of course the Olympics this summer, sport fever is rapidly building up to a super-fan level; and to celebrate, healthy eating noodle chain Wagamama has teamed up with outdoor activity guide OutdoorNI.com to promote healthy eating and active lifestyles, by inviting young people across NI to take part in ‘Doodle with Noodles’, an Olympic-inspired competition where the winner will enjoy a sporty day out, taking part in a healthy cooking class and various sporting activities.
De France Cyclists and Olympic Athletes, we thought now was a great time to promote healthy eating and raise awareness of the importance of exercise amongst young people. The art competition is just a fun way of doing that and the use of noodles in the art just adds an extra noodle-y twist which makes it different from any other art competitions.”
The competition launch coincides with the opening ceremony for this year’s games on 27 July and will run until 12 August. Young people with a creative flare and passion for sport are invited to submit a sporting inspired picture incorporating noodles in some way.
There are two age categories with different prizes; the under 12 category winner will spend an exhilarating afternoon in the capable hands of Mobile Team Adventure, embarking on a fun family session of canoeing on the stunning Lagan Regional Park Valley; the teenager category winner (age 13–18) will take a spin around the city on a Belfast City Bike Tour with the family - a fun, eco-friendly tour with local guides showing the sites, some of which are only reachable by bike.
Wagamama Belfast manager Sonia Lipton said, “We have a connection with lots of athletes and sporting talents in Ireland, including the Irish Boxing Team, and have hosted cooking classes with them teaching the importance of a balanced diet. So taking inspiration from them as well as Wimbledon tennis players, Tour
Chris Scott from OutdoorNI.com is delighted with the competition collaboration, “There are lots of fun outdoor activities which can be enjoyed throughout Northern Ireland and the prizes offered for this competition give just a flavour of what’s on offer. We hope the lucky winners will have lots of fun taking
part and maybe we’ll discover a future gold medalist!” Before participating in the energy intensive activities, both prize winners and their families will be set up for the day with a cookery class hosted by Wagamama group trainer Juan Manteca. Feeling the heat in the kitchen of the Victoria Square restaurant, Juan will teach the families new healthy cooking techniques using fresh ingredients and interesting flavours, leaving them with satisfied tummies and an array of new dishes to continue cooking at home. ‘Doodle with Noodles’ is now open for free entry from 27 July and completed artwork should be submitted to the Wagamama restaurant in Belfast Unit FFC6 Victoria Square Shopping Centre, Belfast BT1 4QG. All entries must include the name and age of the artist as well as contact details for the parent or guardian. Submitted artwork will be displayed in the restaurant until the competition closes on Sunday 12 August when the winners will be announced. For more information tel: 028 9023 6098

Keith Kane Keith Kane is celebrating a record 17th nomination for the Northern Ireland category at the British Hairdressing Awards. Renowned as the Oscars of the hairdressing industry, the British Hairdressing Awards is the biggest and best awards in hairdressing. Keith Kane has been hairdressing for over 25 years and has won Northern Ireland Hairdresser of the Year twice. Keith has also won titles including Schwarzkopf World Champion in Tokyo, and both the Ladies and Gents All Ireland Champion titles. To celebrate his nomination Keith Kane Hair International in Carryduff have just launched their new website with a gallery of all their collection images over the years. Here we get to ask Keith Kane some quick fire questions to get to know him a little bit better… What is your biggest achievement? Being crowned the Schwarzkopf Silhouette World Champion was a very proud moment for me in my career so far. If you weren’t a hairdresser what would you be? I have always thought I would make a great fashion designer. How would your clients describe you? Stylish and well-travelled!
Which one style do you wish you had created? The Wedge Who is your style icon? Audrey Hepburn Who is your hairdressing idol? I have always admired Trevor Sorbie. Who cuts your hair? Myself and the girls in the salon Favourite part of the job? I love having a career where I can create different looks for clients each day - no two days are ever the same for me.
pictures of hairstyles that are just not achievable with their hair type. What’s the biggest gaffe you’ve made in your career? I once forgot to add the activator in an active perm - thankfully it was on an assistant at the time and not a client! What’s the best career advice you’ve ever been given? Always love what you do and you’ll do well. Last time you were starstruck? Seeing Dana International at the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest.
Who is your most famous client past or present? My clients hold titles and are members of parliament but I would never reveal who they are.
Time you were most proud to be in hairdressing? When my team won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place at the All Ireland Hairdressing Championship.
Last time you were lost for words? Never!
What celebrity haircut do you wish had never caught on? Jennifer Aniston’s ‘The Rachel’!
Which one product couldn’t you live without? OSiS Session Hairspray by Schwarzkopf Professional is my styling must-have - it’s a fantastic product for up-dos and especially wedding hair.

LAYER UP
ACNE
Focus on Fashion with Eve Brannon A leading stylist in Northern Ireland, Eve has a wealth of experience in the industry. Each month she offers a fashion focus into the most coveted designers, trends and styles of the season.
Short pleated skirts are elongated with sheer fabrics in the form of ‘under-layering’ – a style that prevailed at the Masha Ma SS12 catwalk, adding a touch of modernity to this classic A-line style.
RAG AND BONE
Fear not, this does not always mean it’s time to ‘cover up’ as layering takes on a new revealing persona. The reincarnation of layering offers a new liberating silhouette as midi cape skirts get unbuttoned to reveal shorts, as seen at Daks.
At the Acne Resort show, layering was an experiment of vibrant colours and textures, as purple trousers are worn beneath a pencil
TOPSHOP
skirt, offsetting the blue and orange hues.
It appears it is time to wave an emotional good bye to the summer sun (not that it made much of an appearance!) as we edge towards Autumn. With this departure, in breezes the opportunity to dabble in the art of layering!

Cathy Martin This month our spa sleuth Cathy Martin takes a look at treatments and products for the face… Summer is a scary time for ladies and their skin – temperatures soar at home (well, sometimes!) and on holiday and we can no longer hide behind a mask of full-coverage foundation, heavy duty concealer and multiple puffs of powder. I like to welcome summer with open arms as it’s a true reminder that we should take good care of our skin and treat it with the respect it deserves. Skin needs to breathe and rejuvenate and there is no better season than now to encourage this. A treatment which brings multifaceted benefits to the skin in summer is a facial peel. Not only does it brighten the skin and reduce the look of fine lines for a smoother complexion, but it also dramatically rejuvenates the appearance of sundamaged, hyper-pigmented and ageing skin. It also enhances the performance of your subsequent skincare products allowing you to get the most from all your beauty buys. A

Philosophy’s Microdelivery Peel (available at Debenhams, Belfast and Boots, Boucher Road). Inspired by the peels offered by dermatologists, this treatment rapidly exfoliates the skin to reveal fresher, more youthful skin. Step 1 features vitamin C and peptide crystals which help remove dead skin cells and with step 2, lactic and salicylic acids work together to remove further cells from within the pores. Philosophy’s latest product, the Microdelivery Triple-Acid Brightening Peel, launches this September and delivers advanced brightening and anti-aging benefits in just one step. This is really effective for discoloration, uneven skin tone and post-acne scarring. What is more, this treatment comes in cute individually wrapped pre-saturated pads and takes no more than 30 seconds to use, and with no rinsing involved a busy lifestyle is no longer an excuse!
If you’re looking for the real thing, a Chemical Peel at Medi Cosmetic is not to be missed. Administered by medical professionals, chemical peels encourage cell renewal, improving skin tone and hydration to reveal a healthy complexion. These chemical peels can also be used in the treatment of reducing acne scarring; age spots; wrinkles caused by sun damage and fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth. Lasting only 15 minutes, this chemical solution can also treat the neck, chest, hands, arms and back – so no more dull, tired-looking skin. This is the ultimate self-confidence booster! With your ‘new look’ skin, it is essential to maintain the skin’s surface as best you can and one of my all-time favourite cleansers, the Eve Lom Cleanser, is just the answer. Having changed the face of cleansing as we know it, its signature blend of four aromatic plant oils, specially woven muslin cloth and quick routine produces incredibly radiant skin with a more refined texture every time. It is a fantastic all-rounder which deep cleanses without drying; decongests and helps drain toxin; improves circulation and enables skin cells to regenerate quickly and best of all, provides a special retreat for your other beauty products to work at their optimum levels. If you prefer the feel of water on your skin opt for Shiseido’s Extra Gentle Cleansing Foam, a luxuriously creamy and rich

lathering cleanser that lifts away make up and impurities while leaving skin wonderfully smooth and balanced. For a seriously sublime recovery from the summer sun, apply Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque once a week. Packed with a super concentrated blend of antioxidant vitamins, this mask is a must-have for helping skin renew itself and promote healthy tissue regeneration. To complete your routine, love your skin with Eve Lom’s TLC Radiance Cream. This lightweight moisturiser packs a punch with age-defying and protective benefits to transform lacklustre skin while you go about your daily duties. Infused with the deeply soothing and precious oil of Bulgarian Rose Otto and Arctic Raspberry Seed Oil, a powerful antioxidant, this moisturiser gives both instant and long-term results which include lifting, firming and helping boost skin elasticity. So get stuck into your new summer skincare regime right now and feel the difference for months to come.

Ciara Daly We were very excited this month to be involved in the production of a groundbreaking new music video right here in Belfast! Multiple disciplines came together, from millinery to carpentry, to extravagant set design. Almost a year of preparation culminated in the week long shoot that is sure to put Belfast on the map. Local up and coming artist Neil Kerr approached myself and the team with this exciting opportunity. Having worked together in the past, and being fans of obscure creativity – we were keen to get stuck in! The brief for the makeup was for everything from natural, day time makeup, ranging right through to glamour, club, show girl, burlesque and gothic punk and even to extreme avant garde makeup. Needless to say, every colour, texture and accessory available in my kit was used in some shape or form. The first day saw 2 characters with mainly sexy sultry smokey eyes, complete with seductive red pouts. The next scene was more of a “pop” look, where we used some bubblegum pink lipstick and lots of luscious lashes! We then had to step
it up a gear for the burlesque/show girl look, with shimmer, glitter and diamonte’s galore - where more was definitely more! The second day was set in a local Belfast nightclub, where everybody had to have that “clubber” look and the backing dancers were given a heavy black winged eye to compliment their extravagant costumes. The next scene signalled something completely different. With a seductive boudoir scene, the models had to ooze sex appeal. For this we opted for soft luscious lips, high cheekbones and fluttering lashes. On the final day we were presented with an array of “accessories” to incorporate into the overall makeup look. These were not your usual hats, scarves or earrings, but a selection that included horns, porcupine quills, skulls, bits of bone, bondage tape and an 8ft high crucifix! So we got cracking on the most dramatic makeups of the entire shoot, ranging from white, ghost like bases, to black body paint smeared across faces and bodies. Obviously not a very wearable look
38
for the models having to get the bus home but the overall effect equally shocking and amazing. It’s very seldom we get to work on something so creative and inspirational and it was challenging yet exhilarating and I’m really looking forward to seeing the end result which will be available in the coming weeks so keep an eye out – and it will be available to view on the online edition of Septembers Issue! Finally, look out for next month’s copy as this years Shaz Awards will be featured - our annual awards ceremony which celebrates models, makeup artists and photographers who have shown an exceptional talent over the past year. In our 3rd year this exciting night will be hosted by Cool Fm’s Kirstie McMurray and will display the freshest talent Northern Ireland has to offer. Plenty of pics to follow next issue!! Ciara x
Grainne Maher Top Milliner, Grainne Maher joins Ulster Life this month for her run down on what’s hot in Jewellery and Accessories. If you’re chasing the rays this August, whether it’s at Tyrella or St.Tropez, you must check out new Northern Irish swimwear label ‘The Lazy Mermaid’ by Katie Larmour and Riona Treacy. This is a stunning collection of handmade unique oneoff bikini’s and suits, with prices ranging from £65 - £145. Katie (pictured) said ‘It’s been a dream of mine to launch my very own collection ever since I won the FHM Holiday Honeys title, which was essentially a swimsuit competition. We had to get snaps done in swimwear for the different stages and I remember searching the town for good outfits and thinking there wasn’t anything special or unique. I wanted to do something creative and glamorous and I immediately thought of local fashion designer Riona Treacy to collaborate with for the first collection to be launched for summer 2012’. London based Riona Treacy is renowned for her signature nudes and tie-dyed silk jersey couture dresses, and this latest collaborative

swimwear range is equally as fabulous. Katie explains ‘each piece of swimwear is hand made and we spent late nights up together dying fabric, stitching beads and applying every last detail together’. Local model and presenter Katie Larmour has recently been made a patron of Northern Ireland’s breast cancer charity ‘Pretty ‘N’ Pink’ and they have asked her to design a pink themed swimsuit to help raise funds, so we must keep our eyes open for that! The Lazy Mermaid swimwear range can be purchased via the Asos Marketplace online. In other news, my own label www. pluckanddevour.com which is available in House of Fraser Victoria Square has had several new designs added, including the cute mini butterflies and the Pooch Cameo series. We will have a range of Kitty Cameos instore in the next few weeks for you cat lovers out there too! Prices start at £18. Enjoy the summer folks! G x

Ms. Malone BT9s PREMIER FASHIONISTA SOLVES YOUR FASHION WOES.
Dear Ms Malone After catching up on the Autumn/Winter trends, I have noticed that brocade is this season’s biggest trend. I’d love to be able to pull this look off but I can’t afford the high price tag that comes with it. Is there a cheap alternative and if so, how would I pull it off? Brocade Brigade.
Fashion Pharmacy. Style consultants for individuals.
Dear Brocade Brigade I also love this trend; I feel it adds a certain level of sophistication and elegance to an overall look. A lot of designers such as Dries Van Noten, Dolce & Gabbana and Balmain have channelled this into their A/W collections and it has filtered down from the catwalk and been recreated for our high street stores. I’ve noticed a lot of brocade in Zara lately and it’s all reasonably priced. I’ve got my eye on these gorgeous black brocade trousers. I recommend pairing them with a plain blouse or top and a pair of high shoes.

Dear Ms Malone I’ve been invited to the Mencap Polo in the City event this year in Belfast and I’m worried because I’ve never been to an event like this and I’m unsure as to what to wear. I’m so used to wearing jeans and a t-shirt that I have forgotten what it’s like to dress up. I don’t keep up with fashion trends so I’m unaware of what’s in at the moment. Please help? Plain Pauline. Dear Plain Pauline The Mencap Polo in the City event is something I now plan my year around – it’s a fabulous day out for everyone. Although this is a relatively dressed up event, it’s quite relaxed therefore you can wear something stylish but also comfortable. There’s no point buying an expensive designer dress if it doesn’t make you feel good about yourself. I was out shopping last week and came across this fab Linea Block Colour Shift Dress, available from House of Fraser for £90. If I were you, I’d pair it with statement royal blue wedged shoes and a blue bag for a timeless look that will stay on trend and which you’ll be able to wear time and time again!
Dear Ms Malone New seasons always overwhelm me. I see so many wonderful items and fabulous styles when walking around boutiques and through stores but when it comes to putting a look together I always feel that I can’t see the forest for the trees. I feel completely un-savvy! How can I embrace the new A/W collections with direction and confidence? Lost Laetitia. Dear Lost Laetitia You’re not alone and there really are a host of trends all ready to hit the shelves. There are so many ways to get comfortable with a new season and some can even be done at home. Firstly jump online and research the season’s styles from checking out local bloggers to digital fashion magazines and whilst you’re on the sofa, don’t forget to switch on for a daily dose of Fashion TV. Of course, there’s no better way to live and breathe a new season than to be surrounded by it so do speak to store staff and in-house shoppers and stylists – they might just offer you a look that you could never have put together yourself. Bra-vo for Bust Stop ‘I’m a Celebrity’ star and ex wife of soccer legend George Best, Alex Best launched ‘Bust-Stop,’ an innovative promotion which will tour Northern Ireland to educate women that 80% of them are wearing the wrong bra size. The initiative was the brainchild of Jocelyn Reynolds, owner of The Bra Boutique, Orchid Lingerie in Belfast and The Lingerie Room in Dungannon and Jocelyn, her mother Yvonne McFarland and their team of measuring and bra-fitting specialists are taking their Bust-Stop on tour with their ‘Bust Shelter’ throughout various
locations in Northern Ireland. They are inviting women to receive a free bra fitting, including those who require a maternity and mastectomy service. Jocelyn says; “We hope that through this tour, more women will wear the correct bra size which will ultimately make them look and feel better. We are grateful to all the independent and high street stores who believe in our initiative and are dedicated to spreading the word about Bust-Stop. The statistic that 80% of women are not wearing the correct bra size has not improved over the last number of years and together with the drastic
48
recent survey showing that only 29% of women were fitted correctly by high street stores, we have created ‘Bust-Stop’ to educate Northern Irish women on the importance of properly fitting underwear.” She continues; “Women’s breasts do change with age, weight loss and gain, during and after pregnancy and it is imperative that they regularly get fitted as wearing the incorrect size can cause discomfort, can damage breast tissue and does nothing to enhance the appearance of your body shape. The main aim of this campaign is to educate and empower women to
know how a bra fits, so that when they do change shape, they know what to look for when fitting on lingerie.” Alex, who was an ‘A’ cup before her breast augmentation seven years ago was wearing a 34D, until the launch when she got measured and realised she was really a 32E. She says;

“I can’t believe I’ve been wearing the wrong bra size for years. It’s no wonder I was getting a sore back due to bad posture and bras were always uncomfortable with wires digging into me. After being professionally measured by Jocelyn at The Bra Boutique my bras feel more comfortable, my breasts immediately took on a different shape and are in proportion. I’m delighted with my ‘new boobs’ however I’m going to have to spend a fortune on new underwear!!” The Bust-Stop tour will be at the following locations over the summer: BUST ROUTE: The Bra Boutique, 19 Arthur Street, Belfast Saturday 4 August 10am – 5pm

David Henderson “The Fairest of Them All”, is a collection designed and created by aspiring fashion designer David Henderson. This collection was initially inspired by medieval armour and the pattern of the embellishments. This concept was further developed into design and fabric manipulation by drawing inspiration from the ‘Brothers Grimm’ Fairytales to style and create his final collection. With the fairy tales, there is no limit to imagination, and so designs and fashion can be breath taking and dramatic. Other major influences include conceptual fashion designers Alexander McQueen and Issey Miyake. These designers inspired David to create fabrics and designs that would be combined to create a collection of innovative and extraordinary conceptual pieces. These unique pieces have been created by sculpting fabric and
manipulating the shape – from laser cutting to screen painting, as well as hand dying all the fabric, these techniques have allowed David to expand himself into new areas of design, and alternative ways of thinking outside the typical design brief. He has definitely made an impression on the NI fashion scene displaying his collection at Belfast Fashion Week 2010-11, as well as the first ever ‘Walk on Water’ fashion show held at the sophisticated ‘El Divino’ Nightclub. His collections have also graced the cover of Northern Ireland’s ‘Wedding Belle’. With a recent dabble in men’s wear, which proved a big hit with lovers of alternative fashion, there is much more to anticipate from this promising and original designer.
54
As one of Belfast’s few male designers, David keeps his feet firmly on the ground, and his cool, mysterious demeanour means that we can always expect the unexpected from him and his creations. David’s collection is a must see for any fashion or textile enthusiast and promises not to disappoint. For further information on David’s work and to find out about any upcoming events, you can contact him on: fashionbydavehenderson@ gmail.com or www.facebook.com/ TheFairestOfThemAll.Fashion

BMW 640d M-Sport Ulster Life motoring with Graeme Wallace Having been asked to review the new BMW F20 6 series coupe, I’ll be honest in that it really isn’t a car that I was too excited about getting behind the wheel of. In my book diesel is the devil’s fuel and only Super Unleaded powered cars raise my blood pressure, so I feel a diesel sports car is somewhat of an oxymoron to any true petrolhead. The car tested here is the model aimed squarely at the UK market, the 640d M-Sport coupe, the standard specification is generous, including Dakota leather, switchable chassis tuning and an impressive navigation system with real-time traffic prediction. The M-Sport models get additional body styling such as deeper sports bumpers, 19in wheels and front sports seats. As soon as I step inside the luxurious interior of this new 640d I am met with the divine smell of the many poor cows who gave up their life to make me comfortable, there is leather everywhere, seats, door cards, dash and centre console. The door closes with the sort of reassuring thud that only BMW seem to be able to master. I settle myself in and within a few seconds I have been able to get my head around the myriad of buttons to have my driving position set to perfection. I tap the ‘start’ button and the 6 cylinder twin turbo diesel fires into life, and when up to temperature and under load the noise is not too dissimilar to that of a water cooled 911. Impressive stuff for a diesel engine. My usual route allowed me to tackle all road types, motorway, B-roads and stop/start driving in town. It behaved impeccably everywhere other than fast bumpy B-roads where the suspension seemed unable to cope with the constant changing of surfaces and cambers. In these
instances you could really feel the weight of the car being lugged about, no surprise really when it weighs in at 1735kg. The steering sometimes feels a little detached from the rest of the car with it being, at best, a little vague. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t expect many of the target customers of this car to be driving like Sebastian Loeb on their way to the golf course on a Saturday morning. What this car does effortlessly is cover ground in luxurious comfort, with its seamless power delivering the ability to overtake in a manner that sports car offerings from other German marques would struggle match. This car is fast, let’s get that straight, 0-60mph comes up in 5.5 seconds, and to put it into perspective that is only marginally slower than a Porsche 911, and with the 8-gear auto transmission it means you’re never caught napping in the wrong gear. This car is not an outright sports car like the 911 though, and to be fair BMW has not designed it to be, Bavarian’s engineers have once again cleverly designed a ‘GT diesel’ which seems to be a segment where their rivals fear to tread. This is as a 2+2 Gran Tourer which could take you and your luggage to Europe in one tank of fuel in sublime comfort. With a 70l tank it has a range of 790 miles, that’s 225 miles more than the 640i and 361 miles more than a Mercedes SL500. There is a downside here though, when you arrive at the end of your European hoon I think the journey wouldn’t be the most memorable, and as a wise man once said the journey is every bit as important as the destination.
Price as tested: ÂŁ66,745; Top speed: 155mph (limited); 0-62mph: 5.5sec; Economy: 51.4mpg; Co2: 145g/km; Kerbweight: 1735kg; Engine type: in-line diesel six, twin-turbochargers, 2993cc; Power: 313bhp at 4400rpm; Torque: 465lb ft from 1500rpm; Gearbox: eight-speed automatic

Leading estate agency practice John Minnis Estate Agents is this month celebrating seven thriving years in business and has eyes set firmly on future growth.
In 2007, the business was exceeding all targets, and a second branch was launched in the seaside town of Donaghadee.
The business has had a number of recent successes, having reported their strongest quarterly sales figures in five years, and being awarded the title of Best Residential Letting Agency in Northern Ireland by the UK industry awards; The ESTAs.
Director John Minnis is thrilled that business has performed so well.
With a free iphone app, John Minnis TV (JMTV), where clients’ homes are featured in a video format online and new website due to be launched in a matter of weeks, JMEA is one of the most forward-thinking estate agencies in the province.
“We started with a team of only four, and the company now employs almost three times this figure, through two branches focusing on Belfast, north Down and the Ards Peninsula, and I am delighted to say that our geographical horizons are expanding all the time.
The estate and letting agency, with two offices, began trading in July 2005 in the bustling heart of Holywood, following a management buy-out.
““I am thankful to my dedicated team that we have managed to weather the deepest property recession in Northern Ireland’s history, which is simply down to the

perseverance, dedication and professionalism of the individuals within this company.
John concluded, “If anyone finds themselves with the seven year itch, they should get in touch.”
“We have seen huge developments in technology being applied to residential sales and lettings, which we have harnessed to give each of our clients that competitive edge, but at the end of the day, it’s down to relationship building and a proactive approach in this market.

Patrick Colhoun Ulster Life’s Resident Art Columnist I finally succumbed to temptation and made Damien Hirst £14 richer by visiting his retrospective at Tate Modern. For the entrance fee though, I was not allowed to take photographs and an official moved at Olympic speed towards me as I raised my phone in front of a pickled shark. I’ve seen it pictured many times but it was impressive to see it in the preserved ‘flesh’. What did I think of the exhibition? As a body of work it is huge. Visually much of it leaves me cold but the engagement for me came when, as in so many cases you got to read the story behind each piece. The pharmacy pieces for example started simply with the contents of his grandmother’s medicine cabinet and therein for me the personal aspect which makes work more relevant. In contrast to the bright colours, spots and pickled mammals, the recently opened Tanks provide an oppressively dark space where smell and sound come more into play. The Tanks are an area specializing largely in performance art and as I visited, a large group of people were walking/ running in the main entrance area much like a shoal of fish would act, all quite bizarre. London, three days before the Olympics was certainly a place with a buzz about it. I was there as my work had been selected for the Celebration of Sport Outside the White Cube exhibition in The Bermondsey Project. With the Olympic developments pricing artists out of certain areas of East London, Bermondsey has been suggested as
the next London ‘art’ hotspot, a trend that has seen places such as Hoxton, Shoreditch, Dalston, Deptford and Peckham become creative hubs. Whilst some galleries are leaving the likes of Vyner Street for West London and Fitzrovia, in the case of the Bermondsey Project, the creative space is inextricably connected to the charity Crisis, so the benefit to the local area is strengthened and thus likely to be more long term. The project has some big names behind it which gives it real credibility and the ethos is to have a real mixture of events. The first event in the space was a photography exhibition by Charles March of Goodwood fame, and the exhibition before the current one was the Bow Arts Open Show were a certain Mr. Saatchi visited and bought several pieces. I had always heard that the London art scene moved around, but to actually see it in action and to be involved in a small way is something else. Finally, a tour of some east side galleries, Charlie Smith-London, Hoxton Art Gallery and Ebb and Flow and then back home to watch some sport on television from a safe distance. The month finished with my work being exhibited on home ground in East Belfast with the summer exhibition in the Engine Room Gallery where I bumped into Jack Pakenham, who is as well known for his dancing as his surrealist paintings. If you don’t know Jack, check out the video for Cashier No. 9’s Goldstar, I wish I had half his energy!

CLAIRE MCCOLLUM What was your first job? I was a paper girl for our local newsagents for a very brief spell when I was about 14 I think. My first round was on a stormy dark winter’s evening and my dad had to come with me! You proposed to your husband live on radio – tell us about that We had been going out for about 9 months and it was coming up to the Leap Year. I was the news presenter on the breakfast show at Downtown Radio and Maurice Jay the host was always keeping me going about proposing to Ally (my now husband). Ally and I had already discussed going in that direction and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity for me to pop the question. On the morning I gave Maurice Ally’s number and then after the 8 o’clock news he had Ally waiting on the line to speak to me. So I just went for it and thankfully he said yes. The poor boy really had no choice! We’ve been married now for 11 years and have two gorgeous kids, Samuel 5 and Rosa 3. How did you get into television presenting? After finishing my main degree in Geography in Dundee, I secured a place on the Radio Journalism post grad course at the London College of Printing. There was a television element to the course and I knew that was where my heart lay. When I returned home I eventually got my first break as Ronan Kelly’s newsreader on Downtown. During my time with the station I went to see the then news editor of UTV, Rob Morrison and was delighted (and probably very surprised) when he offered me a 3 week trial in features. I grabbed the opportunity and those 3 weeks turned into 9
very happy and fulfilling years with the station. I really have a lot to thank both Ronan and Rob for. Yes I had the qualifications and the determination but I think was also very lucky to meet both those men at the right time. Have you ever met a celebrity you’ve been starstruck by? I rarely get starstruck but I must confess when I first interviewed David Beckham (after Northern Ireland’s defeat to England in their world cup qualifier at Old Trafford) I did have a bit of a moment. Come on who wouldn’t! Describe a typical day With two small children, with their own agendas, a typical day is something of a rarity. During term time it’s up and out for school and nursery for 9am. Then it’s strong coffee and head first into either work or sorting the house out after the whirlwind of the morning routine. If I’m working my mum and dad or the childminder will pick up the kids. I’m preparing for the BBC Proms on Titanic Slipways on 8th September which will be a great night out - so long as the sun shines - and I recently welcomed the Olympic flame to Belfast’s City Hall for the BBC. If I’m working on a live tv programme I’ll spend the day rehearsing before the programme airs. As well as having to spend some time in hair and make up the day usually involves running through what’s going to happen on the show with the producer and director. With my new found freedom, I do a lot of freelance work which means no two days are really the same. If I’m on a day off I’ll be at the school gates for pick up recharged and ready to tackle the afternoon which usually consists
66
of homework and play. If Samuel and Rosa have their way it’s out the front on the bikes and scooters or a trip to the park or beach. Tea time comes round and I do my best to produce something the kids will gobble up so I can turn my attention to our meal. We try to eat together as much as possible but some nights I’m at one end of the country or the other hosting events. I have discovered a passion for cooking and love to try new dishes we can enjoy when the kids are in bed and peace has returned! Time to recharge before we do it all again the next day. What’s your favourite pass time? At the moment it’s cooking. When I have the time I love flicking through my various recipe books and trying to recreate the beautifully photographed food in the pictures (doesn’t happen that often). Risotto is my favourite thing to cook right now. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? Treat people the way you would like to be treated. Thank you Dad for that one! What advice would you give to anyone trying to get a break in broadcasting? I know it’s hard to get the break but my advice would be to get as much experience as possible. That will give you an idea as to whether broadcasting really is for you. There are so many areas of our industry, you might even discover another role you hadn’t thought of. Good luck!
