30 Jobs as New Restaurant opens in Belfast

T

he owners of James Street South restaurant have just announced plans to open The Bar + Grill, a brand new, three storey restaurant with private dining facilities and a cookery school in Belfast’s city centre. The ambitious project is located on the corner of James Street South and Brunswick Street which is feet away from its award winning sister restaurant, James Street South. The new eatery, in which Ulster Bank and the restaurant owners have jointly invested £300k, will create 30 jobs and help breathe life into a building situated in an area of Belfast that is popular with food lovers. Niall McKenna, the head chef and business mind behind the new restaurant said: “The Bar + Grill is an exciting project that we’ve been planning for many years. “The ground floor will occupy a sixty seater restaurant, which we plan to open in early November, seven days a week from midday until late. We have mixed old and new styles to help create an atmosphere that’s fresh, casual and fun and our menu has been specially designed to include firm favourites but with a few specialities and surprises thrown in. “The food will be sourced from the seas and fields in and around Northern Ireland as we continue our commitment to support local producers and growers. “On the first floor will be the Private Dining Room which can seat up to 40 people. We have deliberately made it a white space to ensure corporate clients and brands get total ownership of the room for whatever they need it for, whilst giving private parties a cool space to enjoy their dining experience.” The addition of the Cookery School completes an offering that is unrivalled in the city of Belfast. Niall continued: “We have space for 40 people to watch demonstrations and 8 cooking stations for practical sessions or group bookings. “We plan to use the cookery school to host corporate occasions, cookery demonstrations, wine tasting, food themed launches and parties

10

and team building events. “Groups of eight, or less, can also use the space for more intimate occasions like birthdays or even cookery competitions.” Niall, who is the only chef in Belfast to have a restaurant listed in the Restaurant Magazine TOP 100 UK restaurants, is about to embark on a recruitment drive to help staff The Bar + Grill. “We have a dedicated recruitment telephone line, 07724836578 and website www.belfastbargrill.co.uk where people can register their interest in these job vacancies. “We are looking for people with a fun attitude and love of good food to get in touch with us. We need chefs, floor staff, bar people and porters and offer a great package, including cool and modern work surroundings and a great city centre location.” Julie-Ann Halliday, Business Manager at Ulster Bank said: “Niall knows what it takes to run a successful restaurant business. His new venture will help to further capitalise on their reputation with a fresh offering that compliments their existing business. We are delighted that our financial support has enabled James Street South to realise this exciting new project which is creating a significant number of new jobs.” For further information about The Bar & Grill contact 07724836578 or log onto www.belfastbargrill.co.uk.

ON THE PULSE

OF ULSTER LIFE Ulster Life hears from Pulse PR owner Grainne McGarvey about what’s hot this month in Northern Ireland’s social scene.

M

aybe it is just me, but September definitely went quicker than a cold daiquiri on a hot summer day – but I’m not complaining though as October is by far my favourite month of the year. It started with the

Down Royal

14

Westcoast Cooler Belfast Fashionweek and of course my birthday celebrations and will be f inishing up with a great opportunity to dress up and hit the town for Halloween. Speaking of dressing up, Victoria Square kicked off the autumn/winter season with a fabulous fashion show highlighting key trends including Seasonal Heritage, the Swinging Sixties, full-on Seventies glamour and Winter Sparkle. Meanwhile up in Ballymena, Fairhill Shopping Centre hosted a ‘Fashion Lives’ event which saw models take to the catwalk then into the shop window to give shoppers some inspiration for this season’s must-have wardrobe. Back in Belfast local musicians will be hitting the high notes when Music Week begins on 30 October. The week-long programme will see more than 170 gigs and events being held across the city, culminating in the MTV Awards on 6 November. Although sourcing tickets for the EMAs is proving to be as rare as hen’s teeth, it’s still worth spending time in the city to do some ‘A’ list rather than the usual ‘Z’ list celeb spotting. Halloween will be a busy affair across the province and as usual Derry will be leading the celebrations. Ex-Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt and her group, Her Majesty And The Wolves will be performing on Monday 31 October, while a range of storytelling events, outdoor shows and ghostbuster tours will be held across the week-

Ulster Life end. Belfast will also have a host of activities that week including a glitzy masquerade ball in Cafe Vaudeville on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 October to raise funds for the autism charity, the NOW Project, the Monster Mash in the Odyssey car park from 2pm on Sunday 30 October and the largest fireworks display at Clarendon Dock with guest presenters from UTV on Monday 31 October. Down Royal Racecourse will have more than horses on show early November with the hugely anticipated JNwine.com best dressed ladies competition. The fab prize includes a year’s free fashion wardrobe, products from Crème de Mer, and a Mulberry Bayswater courtesy of House of Fraser. It’s a great chance to get glammed with

the girls and with hospitality starting from as little as £60; you’ll have lots left over for a little flutter! Gates open from 11am on Friday 4 and Saturday 5, with the first races starting at 1.15pm. Entrance tickets can be purchased online at www.downroyal.com or at the turnstiles on the day. And finally....a big shout out to Lisburn based company ConveyorTek that took on the mammoth challenge of pushing a bed from Belfast to Dublin. More than 24 staff took part in the event which stopped in towns along the way. In spite of the torrential rain, the team still managed to raise £5,190 for the Irish charity GOAL and I’m sure they were glad of the bed by the end of it!

WARDROBE MISTRESS Ulster Life’s very own Style guru is back with top tips on how to look simply fabulous whatever your dilemma! Dear Wardrobe Mistress, I recently cleared through my parents’ attic and came across some amazing pieces of clothing from the last few decades. I love inspiring pieces which I can add to my wardrobe but I also want to give it a modern edge so I don’t look like I have just found old clothes in the attic! Could you advise me on a few key pieces I could buy on the high street to create a vintage yet modern outfit, something I can mix and match with what I’ve found? Vintage Vixen Dear Vintage Vixen, I love how you want to incorporate clothing from decades gone by into your wardrobe. The high street is full of items inspired from past eras at affordable pieces, so if charity and vintage stores aren’t your thing, then you can stick to what you know with your favourite shops. We love this entire look – all available at CastleCourt, Belfast, and these are pieces which you can match with items that you already have. A midi skirt like this Pleated Rust one, just £35 from Miss Selfridge, creates an elegant base which can be worn casually throughout the day or piled up accessorised for the evening. As the skirt provides a solid base it can be teamed with a patterned top like this Grey Flower Print Top, £27 also at Miss Selfridge. For a more relaxed look, it could also be worn with a slouchy t-shirt. When accessorising with vintage, don’t be afraid to wear a mixture of designer and high street - we love this combo of the Twisted Pearl Necklace £149 from Leo with the faux Pearl Bracelet, £7 at Claire’s.

16

These pearls, whether the real deal or a good replica, add the finishing touches to the classic vintage look. Finally, the neutral yet detailed Tan Shoe Boot £50 at Dorothy Perkins, finish off this classic look. And, to turn this into a more casual outfit, just add a pair of tights and flat boots. Dear Wardrobe Mistress, After months of hard work, I have finally reached my target weight loss and have shed the extra 2 stone that I had put on after having my children. I’m now on the lookout for an LBD to celebrate. I was a size 14 and have slimmed down to a size 10 and I really want to show off my new figure at my upcoming birthday party and think an LBD will do just the trick! LBDieter Dear LBDieter, Wow, what an inspiration – congratulations! It sounds as though you have worked hard to slim down and you so deserve to show off your new figure. LBD’s are a staple in every girl’s wardrobe and can be worn in a variety of occasions, often seen by the Queen of LBD herself, Victoria Beckham. There are a variety of styles available, especially from French Connection which has a fantastic selection this season – we spied this one in particular for you – a flattering bodycon dress which will show off your toned svelte shoulders. Depending how daring you feel, it can be worn with tights or bare legged. If you’re opting for tights, choose a lovely jewel tone – ruby would be perfect. Then continue to accessorize along this jewel toned theme.

Ulster Life Dear Wardrobe Mistress, Beating all the odds of the ‘current economic climate’ I have finally got a job! I graduated from university in June 2010 and have been dressing like a student since, so I have no clue where to start. The dress code is smart/casual which has confused me even more… I don’t want to be over dressed and I definitely don’t want to be underdressed. Can you give me a good starting point please? Worried Workwear Dear Worried Workwear, Smart/casual is a term which leaves you in limbo between formal attire and crossing the line of being too casual, especially on a first day! The most important thing is to be comfortable in what you’re wearing. You are probably going to be nervous and wearing an uncomfortable outfit (8 inch heels for example!) would just add to the pressure. I would suggest a cream blouse, which is formal but delicate. This peter pan collar blouse from ASOS £30 is great - it’s a lovely neutral piece which can be worn with trousers, skirts or shorts, so once you suss out what everyone else is wearing then you can decide what it goes best with. Invest in a good blazer which will give a trendy smart/casual feel to your outfits and, depending on the weather, you can wear it as a coat or as a jacket. This season tapered trousers are bridging the gap between formal trouser and casual jeans. Topshop have a range of tapered trousers in various colours. They offer a great happy medium and can be dressed up or toned down åaccordingly, and these would even look great with the cream blouse!

Hidden Gems

A Sea of Secrets from CastleCourt

W

ith party season right around the corner and a whole host of chic and affordable autumn/winter trends available at CastleCourt, Belfast, there is no excuse not to look fabulous this season. Every fashionista will know that finding the most stylish outfit takes dedication, time, effort and a lot of searching and scouring each store with meticulous precision for the perfect items. CastleCourt has a range of stylish stores, from Debenhams, GAP, Dorothy Perkins and Miss Selfridge to Laura Ashley, Leo, Muse, Blue Inc and H Samuel, so there is something to suit every style and budget. A statement necklace in a jewel tone (Turquoise Pendant Necklace, £5.50, Cape, d Knitte Green Claires, CastleCourt or £33 & Mustard Blouse, £33, Maroon & Black Beaded Wallis; Grey Jeans, £45.95 & Black & Gold Shoulder Bag, Bracelet, £80.00, Leo, er Feath £39.99, Gap; Mustard Hat, £3 & CastleCourt) will add an Turquoise Pendant Necklace, £5.50, extra glitz and glam to ble availa all s; Claire in CastleCourt. a LBD look and a collar necklace (Black & Gold Half Moon Collar, £15.00, Wallis, CastleCourt) will give any top or jumper a 1940s feel in an instance. Lady like accessories with dainty details such as butterflies or birds will also add a bit of extra glam to a floral look outfit (Bird Necklace, £3.00, Muse, CastleCourt or Butterfly and Pearl Necklace, £8.50, Claires, CastleCourt). Colours this season are richer; burgundies, spice colours, warm rust, rich greens and creams (try Red Bucket Bag, £28.00, Dorothy Perkins, CastleCourt). Match these shades with mannish shapes, tweeds and flat shoes for an up to date, powerful look.

18

Autumn/winter 2011 will see the seventies trend continuing; team high waisted trousers with elegant blouses for an effortless laid back look. For a fashion forward twist, add some fur (Fur Gillet, £32, Exhibit, CastleCourt) or a few cuff bracelets (Gold Cuff with Ceramic Detail, £18.00, Dorothy Perkins, CastleCourt) to bring the look bang into the new season. Classy, sheer maxi dresses or skirts and pleated options (Sheer Pleated Rust Skirt, £35, Miss Selfridge, CastleCourt) are another must to ensure an update to date wardrobe. Camila McCourt, Marketing Manager of CastleCourt said: “As a centre, we pride ourselves on having a wide range of stores that reach a wide audience from young, tall, petite, curvy, those on a budget and those who want to flash their cash, so there really is something for everyone. Ulster Life

A Warm Welcome‌ Welcome to the very first of my new Ulster Life monthly column, packed with the latest beauty secrets and tips to bring out a glowing new you. With Jack Frost soon to be nipping at our noses we want to nourish and protect our skin from those harmful winter blues so... 22

Ulster Life Protect that Outer Layer

A Little Blush Goes a Long Way…

As the summer sun fades and woolly jumpers replace sunscreen, skin needs a little more TLC.

Blusher is our best friend for an amazing glow and creams are great when applied to the apples of cheeks. One word of warning though, use with caution, blusher can flatten our faces in so many ways but overuse is so unattractive and will make the eyes look smaller.

Our first ‘autumn sin’ is to pack the sunscreen away to the back of the cupboard... Definitely not! we cry at Dermalogica. Sunscreen is a must have all year, and will protect against all elements, rain, wind, snow, and let’s face it; we usually get all three in a matter of minutes, never mind in a day! There are some amazing sun screens on the market but I’m a huge fan of Dermalogica Solar Booster. (Price £27.60) Just a drop or two into your favourite moisturiser and you have SPF 30 all day long. There is no heaviness, no thickness, just protection.

Adapt Your Moisturiser Some skins need to intensify their moisturiser from summer to winter and now is the time to do this. The skin does tend to produce more oil and vitamin D in the summer months so it’s a good idea to opt for an antioxidant moisturiser like Akademklinican Antioxidant Day Cream (£63.00). This will provide you with stimulating collagen activating ingredients along with a cocktail of vitamins. Best of all, it smells great too. Skin Smoothing Cream by Dermalogica (£38.50 for 100ml) is also a huge favourite with the fabulous texture of marshmallows and is a personal favourite as a base for makeup.

Tinted Moisturiser or Foundation? Is it time to ditch the tinted moisturiser in place of some heavy foundation? The answer is a little bit of both.Skin looks best with a light coverage of good long lasting foundation and concealed were we need it, and we all do! One myth I want to clarify is, is foundation bad for our skin, does it give us spots? In one word... No! It just makes us look better, younger, and brighter. A lady once boasted to me at a party that she was 40 and didn’t know how to even apply foundation. You could tell! Obvious sun damaged, prematurely aged and dehydrated. A good foundation will always give you sun protection and mineral brands will give you vitamin C, A, K and E and green tea!

Cleansing The key of good skin, is good cleansing. And probably the most essential product you can own, except of course the all important exfoliator. To remove your makeup properly you’ll firstly need to remove any debris and dead skin cells. Dermalogica offer a range of exfoliators and cleansers and are in my opinion the elite of the skincare market and my skin never does without the Daily Microfoliant (£33.50). Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing Gel (from £22.10) will remove your makeup and keep you super clean and fresh, without stripping essential oils and maintaining a recommended PH balance of 5.5.

Pick-Me-Up And for a little luxury autumn pick me up! Akademklinikan Peel Facial treatment can’t be missed, an amazing lactic acid and glycolic peel to help restore any sun damage and dehydration and ensure that you’ll most definitely be an autumnal beauty. Visit the Beauty Company and enjoy the One hour deluxe experience, complete with massage and skin analysis all for just £60.00 All products are available at The Beauty Company, for further details log on to www.beautycompanybelfast.com or call 028 9033 2546. 2-12 Montgomery Street, Belfast, BT1 4NX

A

s London Fashionweek kicked off, Northern Ireland experienced its own fashionextravaganza, with the launch of the new autumn/winter 2011 collections at Victoria Square. Adorned in a heady mix of high street and designer labels, some of Ireland’s top models put their best fashion feet forward at an exclusive press preview of the new season collections now on sale in Victoria Square. Five fabulous fashion trends, inspired by looks on the international runways, sashayed down the catwalk in Victoria Square’s main mall in front of an exclusive gathering of invited press, followed by a second public show. From the plush new colour-blocking ‘Autumnal Jewels’ trend, characterised by rich, vibrant emeralds, rubies, garnets, sapphires and citrines to the chunky knits, cosy tweeds and faux furs of the ‘Seasonal Heritage’ trend autumn/winter fashion at Victoria Square has many faces. Taking attendees on a trip through the ages, the eclectic show previewed autumn/2011’s homage to three different decades. From the

s the wintery winds blow outside and the central heating blasts at our skin indoors, the colds and flu viruses of the season also abound. A healthy diet, plenty of water and enough exercise to keep us fit can help keep them at bay – and the old preventative measures such as plenty of Vitamin C can also contribute to a cold and flu-free winter. Good food sources include oranges and other citrus fruits as well as kiwis, guava’s, red and green peppers and winter’s favourite – Brussels sprouts - but this month our resident Spa Sleuth Cathy Martin took to applying Vitamin C facially with an indulgent Vitamin C facial at the Merchant Hotel’s Spa. This oxygenating, anti-aging facial seemed super enticing with its promises of ingredients brimming with antioxidants, including an application of natural Spirulina Algae - rich in protein, vitamins, minerals and botanical extracts, to combat premature aging and provide skin with a healthy glow. starting with Myrrh oil for my nail cuticles, my therapist talked about my skin and asked about my dermalogical concerns; and like probably 90% of women I have slight worries about dehydration and the resultant wrinkles. Thankfully I have mother’s genes and I’m probably not as wrinkly as I deserve to be, given the sun-kissed and cocktail drenched lifestyle I led throughout my late teens and twenties, but I am sure this, coupled with the stress of running a business, will catch up with me at some point and so I am determined now to keep my skin well hydrated through regular facials and plenty of H20. However fret not, because the therapist is there to take away all worries and so she began the facial therapy with a Calm Mind Ritual whereby I inhaled fabulously relaxing aroma oils over simple breathing exercises. My skin was then cleansed with Kerstin Florian’s rehydrating Neroli cleansing milk which contains pure Neroli oil, green tea and aloe vera to gently remove impurities as it hydrates. Rich in antioxidants, this oil protects and nourishes with sea derived minerals and is kind to even the most sensitive of skin. Next, came a rejuvenating thermal tonic – a light mineral based toner which leaves skin feeling fresh and soft and has a light moisturising effect. My therapist told me this prepares the skin for nutrient boosters and moisturisers and acts as an anti-inflammatory for tired & puffy skin. And mine was certainly tired. But after tiredness comes a re-awakening. And so the rehydrating Gommage Vetal – an exfoliant of Jojoba beadlets, evening primrose and avocado oils as well as wheat germ and apricot kernel plus St Johns Wort for calming all skin types – managed to refine my skin’s texture to a noticeable new clarity, smoothing rough

Everything from the coat stand, tables, chairs, pictures will be available for purchase. Manager Stevie Haller said, “Pop-up restaurants are the latest food craze with chefs taking over underutilized spaces or vacant kitchens providing an outlet for chefs to express their culinary creativity.” “Pop-up restaurants are trendy, in high demand and can vanish as quickly as they appear, making them awesome but often elusive for securing a table. We’re already experiencing a high level of interest from prospective diners”. Jill O’Neill of ReFound commented, “HOME will take our ReFound pop-up shops to the next stage to sit in an environment with our furniture. The idea of HOME worked perfectly with the ReFound ethos of re-found experiences. As soon as customers walk in, the food will inspire homeliness and comfort, listening to music will inspire memories and furniture that will remind you of your childhood. From the moment you walk in, we’ve tried to create and evoke a homely

50

sense. The environment will change on weekly basis as and when furniture is sold and replenished. The menu for HOME has been created by chef Andy Rea of Mourne Seafood Bar and dishes on the menu include “Old school” ham shank and split pea soup, organic roast beetroot salad with walnuts and goats cheese croquettes for starters. Main courses on the menu include Dexter oxtail cottage pie with whipped potato top and seasonal vegetables; cod with wilted greens, roast tomato and shallot confit and polenta fries; local herb roast chicken with Irish style cabbage, potato sauce and bacon bits. While to finish desserts range from oaty spiced apple crumble with vanilla ice cream and warm chocolate cake with chocolate sauce, berries and crème fraiche. Reservations will be accepted for evening bookings on 07936292502. HOME, 8 Calendar Street, Belfast. www.homepopup.com

A bright new idea at the OUTLET:

W5 Lite T

oday sees the opening of a new concept at the OUTLET shopping village Banbridge: W5 Lite. In an exciting first for one of Northern Ireland’s top family attractions, W5 has brought its award-winning interactive discovery experience outside Belfast, to join the host of big brands at the OUTLET. W5 Lite is a free taster experience at the OUTLET and will offer families the opportunity to enjoy some of W5’s hands-on exhibits: interactives such as Flying Fish, One in a Million, Sound Tube and others which develop creativity and skills in animation. Brendan Considine of Glenrye, asset managers of the OUTLET said, “We are delighted with our new partnership with W5. It’s a genuinely exciting innovation that provides something for young families that isn’t available at any other retail centre in Ireland. W5 Lite extends our offer to shoppers who are looking for great value as well as a fun day out. We hope it will be a great success.” Centre Manager of the OUTLET, Chris Nelmes said, “W5 Lite is all about grown-ups sharing experiences and discovery together with the younger members of the family. Smart shoppers will know we have an array of big brands offering superb outlet prices all year round at the OUTLET. Now you can bring the kids, spend the day together, shop, eat out and discover W5 Lite too.” Chris Nelmes continued, “Don’t tell the children you know, but many of the exhibits at W5 Lite are linked to things they are learning about at school. This gives them a fantastic opportunity to get an independent hands-on try at things like animation, in a pressure-free fun environment – and a unique chance to show off their knowledge to their parents and carers.” The OUTLET shopping village attracts large numbers of visitors from all over Northern Ireland as well as a substantial number of cross-border shoppers. Chris Nelmes said, “The opening of W5 Lite at the OUTLET is an important step in the development of Banbridge as a gateway to other destination tourism opportunities throughout Northern Ireland. By creating a truly value for money family destination, we hope this will encourage Irish visitors to come back and find out more about what’s on offer in the region. Liam Hannaway, Chief Executive of Banbridge District Council said, “This is a great new addition

52

to the OUTLET and we are delighted to welcome the arrival of W5 to our area. This will have tremendous appeal for local families and we hope it will provide an even more compelling reason to visit Banbridge, to spend time exploring the wide range of sporting, cultural and retail opportunities in the area and supporting the region’s economy.” The launch of W5 Lite also marks a new partnership between the OUTLET and W5, which will see the OUTLET sponsoring W5’s interactive START area for the under-eights in its Odyssey Belfastbased attraction. Here, children can build a house, make a splash and sail their own boat, make music, explore a castle and play shop in a miniature-scale supermarket. W5 Chief Executive Dr Sally Montgomery said, “This is an exciting new partnership for W5 which makes really sound sense. The OUTLET is seeing visitors coming from all over Ireland in search of great value outlet shopping. W5 is enjoying large numbers of local families, overseas tourists and schools visitors coming to share our interactive exhibits, events and experiences. This new partnership gives both organisations a great opportunity to showcase what they do to a fresh audience, add value to the other and, we hope, ultimately to drive and develop each other’s business. These unique partnerships are really important in Northern Ireland’s future as a tourism destination, as we are all striving for the same shared economic success.”

To pay or not to pay?

I

t was not that long ago that I appeared on BBC Breakfast with Bill, Sian and Simon to do an early morning blind wine tasting session (not my idea of a pleasant experience that early in the morning!). The mornings’ programme was dedicated to informing viewers about alternative investment opportunities such as Gold, Art, Timber, etc., but wine certainly stood out as having the greatest appeal with one of the main advantages being no capital gains tax to pay! They wanted to do a live tasting to see if any of them could tell the difference between an investment quality wine to a standard Bordeaux claret. You can see the results on our website – www.fineandco.co.uk I would imagine that most of the general public would be capable of selecting and preferring a considerably more expensive wine in a blind tasting. Having said that, you cannot argue with you own pallet! If you like it and it suits you, then that is absolutely perfect. The question is how much are you prepared to spend? Northern Ireland can claim the prize of spending the most money on the average

54

bottle of wine compared to the rest of the UK. This would suggest that we are prepared to look for quality and realise that you do have to spend above the average to seek out the best wines. Don’t get me wrong, I am not suggesting you have to spend a fortune each time, but in my opinion I believe you get what you pay for in wine. When you think about the tax, the transport, the packaging and all the other costs involved, what price do you think the importers paid for the actual wine?

The question is how much are you prepared to spend?

Speaking of good claret from Bordeaux, the wine I recommend this month has an interesting background. The owner of Chateau de la Ligne is a local Northern Irish business man and has owned the vineyard since 17th March 2000. Perfect for the winter nights around the corner! Fine & Co. are hosting a free open day for individuals interested in hearing more about

investment into the fine wine market, on Friday 29th October at The Merchant Hotel – 3.00pm to 6.00pm. To contact Gavin at Fine & Co. Northern Ireland’s, first dedicated fine wine investment company, call 0843 2896460 or visit www.fineandco.co.uk

My wine recommendation: Chateau de la Ligne 2006. Available in Sainsburys and Winemark. Perfect for those winter nights on the horizon.

“TALKING HEADS” An exhibition of new paintings and sculptures by Deepa Mann-Kler & Patrick Colhoun

A

n exciting art and sculpture exhibition featuring two of Northern Irelands’ contemporary artists is set to be unveiled at Canvas Galleries, Stranmillis, Belfast on Thursday 27 October, from 7-9pm. Patrick Colhoun and Deepa Mann-Kler have worked together to produce sculptures and paintings that explore memory, family, collective and individual experience, identity and purpose. Called, Talking Heads, the pieces will be shown in Canvas Galleries, 76 Stranmillis Road, Belfast from Thursday 27 October until Saturday 11 November. The exhibition will see Patrick and Deepa each produce a new body of work, jointly influenced

56

by the same overarching themes. Patrick said “This exhibition comes at an important time in my career and explores issues such as loss, identity and purpose. The Talking Heads theme comes partially from the lack of features in my figurative work and that in turn relates to a lack of voice and a loss of identity that we sometimes feel as individuals. Whilst all of the work in this exhibition is new, it has the same very strong signature style. The influences are the same but have been shaped and refined somewhat by having been immersed in the contemporary art scene in London for the last year. I have learned a lot in a short space of time. It’s great to have such a significant exhibition in Belfast. This exhibition with Deepa has been

Ulster Life

a long time in the making and I have looked forward to it all year. Deepa’s work is very strong and that raises the bar for me in terms of what I make and how it is presented.” Deepa said, “Talking Heads represents a new body of work that is taking me into the artform of abstract expressionism. While I traditionally work with oils, this show represents a departure in the way the work has been created. Since the themes inherent in this work are about family, the collective, groups and the memories and experiences they accumulate and the dynamics of how we influence each other, the paintings were all worked on collectively - as if the paintings themselves represented individuals within a family group. During the process of creating the group, individual paintings were moved about, to replicate the external dynamics that are constantly influencing the family. Sometimes particular paintings were omitted from a particular painterly experience, to underline the theme that we may all be part of a collective, but we all come at it with different stories. On an individual level there are memory/experiential gaps, but as a collective those memories become a whole. I have also introduced the use of texture into the surface of the paintings to create a sense of depth and to convey the feeling that what we see on the surface may not be the reality underneath.”

Deepa said “I feel I reached a certain level of artistic maturity that now wants to work together with other artists. Patrick and I have been following the development of each others work and career closely over the past two years. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the original sculptural interpretations that are symbolic of Patrick’s work. This joint show is very exciting and comes hot on the heels of a very successful George Best exhibition for me. It has been a challenge to create this body of work – but it was something I wanted to do.” Patrick said, ‘I’m working in a very traditional field but I see this as a challenge to be very different, very contemporary. I strive to be unique, my work will divide opinion. It is strong, brooding and masculine, it touches on subjects like sexual deviancy, containment, aggression, with hints of religious symbolism, making distasteful subjects into attractive physical forms. My work is not for everyone but winning the sculpture category of the Signature Art Awards recently in London is a great reassurance that I am doing something right.’ Paul Evans, owner of Canvas Galleries said, “I am genuinely looking forward to launching this exhibition in our Stranmillis Gallery at the end of October. I have given the Talking Heads exhibition a prime time of year as I want everyone to experience this show for themselves. It will be a unique and wonderful experience that I think will underline how well established these two artists are in their own fields. The quality and level of commitment in this new body of work is going to be evident in everything they produce. I feel the underlying narrative that will work its way throughout this body of work will reach out to the public in a very person focussed way. We have also made excellent decisions on pricing of this latest work to make sure it is accessible to everyone”. Talking Heads is sponsored by Ulster Life Magazine. Paintings and sculptures range in price, starting from £300 and going up to £1000 and will be available to buy on the opening night and during the Talking Heads exhibition.

Ulster Life profile

Ulster Life Business Profile

Derek Bingham

Derek Bingham is a Dentist who decided to start his own boutique style dental practice that suited its surroundings in the village of Moira. Derek is passionate about dentistry and takes great pride in the results he achieves.

What was your first job? I worked as an associate for 4 years after graduating in a busy NHS practice in Belfast then with the same company I then provided private dentistry and implants in their practice in Ballymena. Other than helping on the family farm dentistry was my first job.

How did you end up doing your current job? Although I really enjoyed my time as an associate I found it frustrating that all I could ensure was my clinical work, because I was working in someone else’s practice I couldn’t ensure that my patients were receiving ultimate customer service and I had no control over the surroundings, the team or the brand. I decided to start my own boutique cosmetic practice were I could have my team trained specifically as I wanted, I could ensure good customer service because all the systems in place would be created and implemented by me and I could choose what services we provide and what materials we use. In early 2007 a practice came up for sale in Moira, I decided to take the plunge and start my own practice, Its nearly our 5th birthday and in that time we have renovated twice, added an extra surgery, created a purpose built decontamination room, added two more dentists to the clinical team, and provided the most straight teeth in the UK using the

62

Clearstep System. It has been in many ways a very stressful 5 years but also very rewarding and we are so happy with the way things are coming together at the practice.

What qualifications do you have? Every dentist is required to complete a certain amount of continued personal development by attending lectures and courses, I am a full member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, this requires me to attend extra and specific Continued Professional Development lectures on Cosmetic Dentistry. Having completed training I am a registered provider of Clearstep, Inman Aligner, Invisalign and Six Month Smiles, I am currently the UK’s largest provider of Clearstep and as such I am classed as a Clearstep Ambassador. In 2006 I completed a year long course in dental Implantology. I am currently participating on the prestigious Chris Orr Course for cosmetic dentists in London.

Describe your typical working day? I live locally and after breakfast I head down to work to set up for our first patient who is due at 8:30am . We start our day with a daily team meeting this ensures that the day runs smoothly and we are ready for every eventuality, talking in detail with the team about each expected patient and the

Ulster Life profile treatment that we are providing for them. Between 8:30 am and 5:30pm is usually quite crazy, my nurse and I go from one patient to the next, only breaking for lunch. A day can be so very diverse from one patient to the next, fitting braces followed by placing a dental implant then there is always the unavoidable fillings. Once the last patient leaves in the evening the fun begins, replying to e-mails, creating treatment plans for patients, dealing with my post and calling patients back who I need to speak to and sitting down over dinner to discuss the day with my wife and practice manager, Naomi.

What’s the most rewarding thing about your job? Its so cliché but so true, helping people out of pain is very rewarding, for the dentist it is not the most difficult thing and patients can not be more thankful, helping get a patient out of pain often provides the team with biscuits for tea break. The most rewarding part of my job is being part of a smile transformation, from the start when the patient comes in for initial consultation explaining their wishes. During the treatment working with the laboratory, discussing with the patient and the technician the shape, size and colour of someone’s new smile. Or at the very end when you take a patients braces off to reveal a perfect new straight smile creates great satisfaction.

injuries I now have to watch rather than play. Although my age is gathering momentum against me, my wife and I are still both involved with the Youth Group at our church often spending our weekends involved in church activities.

What has been your most extravagant purchase? I would love to have an exciting answer to this! But unfortunately I have to say my dental chair. When I bought it back in 2007 there was only a handful of practices that owned such a chair, it’s the Mercedes of the dental chair world, German engineered and very sleek. I have to say however that it looks the same as every other dental chair and patients are oblivious to its worth, I love it no less now than the day I bought it although next time I decide to spend that amount of money I should spend it on something more exciting.

What car do you drive? A Mercedes C class

Do you have any unfulfilled ambitions? Lots! And they are all very boring and to do with teeth! To make an appointment with Derek call the clinic on 028 9261 1828

Outside work and family, what do you enjoy? Rugby is my sport of choice, however, dentistry and Rugby don’t go well together and owing to

Ulster Life Art

Patrick Colhoun A month in the art world

W

hen I started on my artistic journey only a few short years ago after a career doing something totally unrelated, little did I think that I would become so busy, so quickly. My exhibition with Deepa Mann-Kler in Canvas Galleries which opens on the 27th October will mark a significant milestone in both our careers. To collaborate on an exhibition with someone, there needs to be a ‘fit’. With Deepa there has been a synergy in terms of age, family makeup and previous career, but more than anything there has been a strong gut feeling that the partnership would work. Early ndications are good, but as we are both revealing completely new bodies of work the nerves are certainly there. We are both delighted that Ulster Life has decided to sponsor the event for us, because we both feel that the fit the audience is excellent. Because my head has been down 24/7 preparing for this exhibition, I have not had the chance to visit many events this month but I was delighted to be asked to provide sculpture for what can only be described as the ‘coolest’ new house in town. The Iceberg has been designed by the ‘House of the Year’ team, Des Ewing Architects and Garuda Design and as expected has been finished to the highest specification. Apart from the stunning split level design, the finishes were immaculate and what stood out for me as a design item was the ‘velvet concrete’ wall cladding by Tactility Factory, it’s worth checking out. This month I also wanted to spread the word about a couple of artists whose work I have got to

64

know over the last while. Ian Wilgaus has a huge talent for portraiture. So lifelike are his graphite portraits, they are like looking at photographs, but it’s his pop art that really grabbed me. He showed his Belfast Boy painting in an exhibition alongside my work in The Waterfront Hall late last year and it was a standout piece for me. At the other end of the spectrum, Clinton Kirkpatrick’s work is based mostly around abstraction. Clinton is an exuberant character and this comes out in abundance in his work. Clinton has a group exhibition in the Emer Gallery this Christmas and a solo show in The Waterfront Hall next March and no doubt there will be many influences from his research trip to Kenya earlier this year. For me, work continues unabated. This month has seen me submit a proposal for my biggest ever installation of work and an invitation to exhibit oversees with 20 artists from 10 different countries. Fingers crossed that these come off, as I’d hate to have any time off.
