welcome

Welcome

Having spent the last month researching and writing this latest installment of Ulster Life, it’s fair to say that I’m definitely full of Christmas spirit - and I’m not referring to the mulled wine! Whether you’re looking for festive fashion and beauty tips, or ideas on how to decorate your home this Christmas we’ve plenty of hints and tips to make sure you achieve your desired look. There’s even a Gift Guide with a few ideas for the man or woman in your life this Christmas. We take to the stage with local actress Jayne Wisener who stars as Cinderella in this year’s pantomime of the same name at the Grand Opera House in Belfast, and also bring some panto fun to the issue is Ivan Little, or should I say Lady Ma Ma, Ivan’s alter-ego at The Waterfront’s production of “Sleeping Beauty”. There’s plenty to get you in the mood in the run up to Christmas, so take some time out from all the parties and shopping to have a read. Until next issue,

New Revolutionary Anti-Ageing Treatment Revealed The quest for younger looking, firmer, more radiant, line-free skin is a quest we have all undertaken and a road we gladly continue to travel. The ancient Egyptians were the first to document their attempts to halt the ageing process, noting the effects of certain clays and minerals on the skin, in the hope of warding off wrinkles and remaining eternally youthful. Thankfully science and technology have come a long way since then and incredible new advances mean that it is possible to not only halt the passage of time but dramatically rejuvenate the skin, erase lines and wrinkles, eliminate pigmentation and even encourage the production of new collagen to improve skin’s texture and tone; and in so doing, look years younger. Enter iPixel, the new and revolutionary skin resurfacing treatment exclusively available at Therapie Clinics in Northern Ireland. This ground-breaking treatment means that it is now possible to literally turn back the hands of time and look between 10-15 years younger, critically without having to go under the surgeon’s knife. The treatment is FDA-approved and is quite simply revolutionising the anti-ageing industry and changing how we will approach the ageing process, forever. Whether you’ve lost that youthful

glow and are noticing the emergence of the first few lines and wrinkles or perhaps your skin has much deeper set wrinkles and a great deal of sun damage; no matter where you are in the ageing process, the beauty of this treatment is that it can be tailored to suit your individual needs and deliver a complete rejuvenation and transformation. Not only does the iPixel treatment radically firm-up loose skin and give a more contoured, youthful appearance, erasing lines and wrinkles over a tailored treatment plan but it is also incredibly effective on scarring such as acne scars. How does iPixel work? Unlike topical creams, laser skin resurfacing works deep in the underlying tissues to fight those fine lines and wrinkles and the uneven skin tone that often accompanies growing older. The procedure gradually stimulates new cells to replace aged and photo-aged skin, delivering new, healthier, smoother tissue in place of

old skin imperfections. This is the most advanced antiageing technology available, with leading dermatologists referring to it as “the most effective and resultsdriven technology in the world”. Therapie Clinic has clinics nationwide including Cleaver House in Belfast, Carlisle Rd in L/Derry and Merchants Quay in Newry and offers free skin consultations. “Oh Yes She Is...”

This issue we meet beautiful and talented local actress Jayne Wisener. Hailing from Coleraine in County Antrim, singer and actress, Jayne Wisener is probably best know for her screen roles as Johanna in the film “Sweeney Todd” and her appearance in the “Inbetweeners”. Jayne has recently been on our TV screens playing the role of Kat Nickleby in a BBC adaptation of Nicholas Nickleby, and will soon be

back as Sandie in the second series of BBC drama, “6Degrees”, which follows the lives of six individuals from throughout the UK and Ireland as they start university and begin their journey through adulthood. Jayne now lives in London with her husband, Wayne Austin, but is currently in Belfast filming “6Degrees” and preparing for

her role as Cinderella in this year’s pantomime of the same name at the Grand Opera House, Belfast. We managed to catch up with her between rehearsals.

Jayne you had your own Cinderella moment this summer when you married Wayne?

Yes, it was a great wedding, a really magical day. The wedding had a movie theme and Wayne and I were the two romantic leads! We had programmes, with the cast listed, instead of an order of service, customised popcorn boxes and the tables at the reception were named after various romantic movies including “Dirty Dancing” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”.

Are you excited to be taking part in this year’s pantomime production of “Cinderella”? Yes, I’ve never been on stage in a

pantomime before. Everyone keeps telling me it’s hard work having to perform seven days a week, twice a day, but I’m so excited, I love all of the slapstick and audience participation involved and I just can’t wait for it to start. I can remember when I was in the audience watching the Christmas panto at the Opera House and dreaming of the day I would be up on stage - and now it’s come true!

Who is starring alongside you in “Cinderella”?

May McFettridge of course, it just wouldn’t be the same without her! May is my Fairy Godmother, so prepare for lots of laughs. Also making a star appearance this year is none other than children’s TV icon Basil Brush who plays Baron Basil. Mark Adamson plays my Prince Charming and Conleth Kane is his sidekick Dandini. In the role of the two ugly sisters are

Paddy Jenkins and Ciaran Nolan and Aidan O’Neill is Buttons.

As well as “Cinderella” you’ve also been back home filming “6Degrees”.

Yes, I’ve been back in Belfast shooting the second series of “6Degrees”. I love playing Sandie, she’s a great character. Like me she hails from the Causeway Coast, is a bit of a girly girl and likes to look glam and she’s also an innocent optimist. Sandie believes the best in everyone and I would have possessed this naiviety too when I left Coleraine for London, so I can relate to her. I get on so well with the rest of the cast it really is a great production to be part of.

We’ve recently been watching you on TV in “Nicholas Nickleby”, this was filmed in Belfast too, wasn’t it? Wayne & Jayne with the bridal party on their wedding day

Yes, I was cast in the role of Nick’s sister, Kat Nickleby, and while it’s not set in Belfast, the programme was filmed here. “Nick Nickleby”

13 is set in London, but the producers felt that Belfast lent itself better as a backdrop. Ironically, since Wayne and I married the parts I’ve got have meant that I am back in Northern Ireland! It was great to work alongside Bronagh Gallagher (“The Commitments”) who plays the role of Mrs Nickleby and Adrian Dunbar (“My Left Foot”, “The Crying Game”) plays my uncle, Ralph Nickleby.

With the pantomime are you getting any time off over Christmas?

I’ll only have Christmas Day off, but Wayne is coming over here and we’ll spend the day with my family in Coleraine, and then they’ll all be here to come along and support me in the panto. Jayne will be appearing in Cinderella at the Grand Opera House from Saturday 8th December 2012 to Sunday 26th January 2013. Tickets can be booked on 028 9024 1919 or online www.goh.co.uk

A leading stylist in Northern Ireland, Eve Brannon has a wealth of experience in the industry. Each month she offers a fashion focus into the most coveted designers, trends and styles of the season.

Deco Dream Art Deco, a design style that originated in Paris in the 1920s and flourished worldwide thereafter, began as a retort against the soft, floral organic lines of Art Nouveau – a then popular style at the turn of the century. Designers began using clean, straight lines and strong colours, in contrast to the pale pastels of Art Nouveau. The world of fashion was an important driving force in Art Deco design; women now wanted clothes that were practical as well as glamorous - reflecting the functionality and elegance of the 1920s. Designers such as Coco Chanel and Paul Poiret were the first to embrace the dramatic, geometric, straight lines. This season sees a strong influence from this period, with Deco detailing such as embellishment and heavy beading prevailing. A keen attention to graphic details and strong, symmetrical lines – coupled with dazzling metallics and sparkling gemstone accents – makes this trend a real feast for the eyes!

Fashionably Famous Gwen Stefani

Back with her band, No Doubt, Gwen Stefani is now a mother of two in her forties, but could easily pass for a woman half her age. Certainly since her appearance on the X-Factor everyone has sat up and taken notice of this stunning celebrity. Noted for her sense of style over the years, Gwen has her own fashion label, l.a.m.b, and her look has always got a touch of ‘punk-rocker’ infused somewhere, certainly her tartan trousers certainly nod to this season’s plaid trend. Finishing off her ensemble with classic platinum locks and signature red lips Gwen possesses a timeless yet totally on trend sense of personal style.

promotion Linzi Rooney

Never Forget... Elephant Juice Linzi Rooney graduated from University of Ulster in 2008 with BA Hons Art and Design and up until last year was working as a full time photographer, but becoming restless and wanting to get her “hands dirty” rather than wasting her creativity in front of a computer screen, Linzi began to explore other options, which lead to her new business Elephant Juice last year. “I have always loved the idea of recycling something old into something fresh and unique and I think fashion can be so disposable now. I wanted to create pieces that were timeless, since most of the cutlery I recycle to make my jewellery is 100 years old, why should it not last another 100 years, albeit in a different guise. Elephant Juice specialises in turning old and unused silver cutlery into one-off pieces of timeless jewellery,” explains Linzi. Why Elephant Juice? Well,

Linzi decided to name her new venture, “Elephant Juice”, because it means “I love you”. We can all remember back to those days of a child when we said elephant juice because it looks like you are saying I love you and then the person you said it to says I love you too and then you laugh and say I didn’t tell you l loved you! If you are thinking of commissioning a piece of jewellery from Linzi, maybe work from a piece you have already seen her make, or if you have a piece of cutlery, say for instance, from your granny or childhood home that has got nostalgia for you and you would like it turned into a bracelet or necklace. Anything can be made, there are no limits so let your creativity go wild. Pieces can also be bought in Coppermoon, Refound and Jacob Street in Belfast and as of 1st December Elephant Juice will be on ASOS Marketplace.

For further information and commissions contact Linzi Rooney at Elephant Juice on: T: 07709 861897 E: linzi@elephantjuice.net, W: elephantjuice.net Facebook & Twitter NB. In 2013 Linzi will also be starting as a director with “The Fashion Souk”, helping to promote a greener and more sustainable way to shop and live, and also to promote local artists and designers. The Christmas Souk will be on Sunday 9th December at Radisson Park Inn Hotel, Clarence Street West, Belfast.

Have Yourself A Berry Lippy Xmas!

Christina Hendricks Photography: Tim Cully Make-up: Ciara Daly

Well ladies, as the season to be fabulous approaches us, a sure fire way to quickly update your make-up look is to be bold and brave with a gorgeous red lip.

Cameron Diaz By Ciara Daly

I often get asked the question, would I suit red lips? My honest response is yes everybody suits red lips, it’s just down to the shade and texture of lipstick which you decide on, so here are some do’s and don’ts on how to wear red.

TEXTURE

When it comes to texture, if you have nice big luscious lips you can wear anything from a matte heavily pigmented lipstick to a lipstain or red gloss, but if you are more mature and lipstick can tend to bleed into fines lines I would recommend more sheer or glossy finishes.

COLOUR

A few different factors come into play here, for example, your skin

tone, current trend, how you’re wearing the rest of your make-up, your lip shape and size, and even your personality or outfit you’re wearing. My view is true reds work best on a pale face, while olive skin tones suit brown reds or darker shades, but bear in mind there are always exceptions to the rule!

CURRENT TRENDS

This season there are more vampy reds with blue undertones opposed to the bright fire engine reds, but seasons and trends come and go, so find the perfect red for you and stick with it. Trust me, once you get used to wearing red you’ll instantly feel more powerful and sexy, and hey, what girl doesn’t want that for Christmas?

My Top Five Reds... 1. Clinique Chubby stick In Super Strawberry, £16: A perfect red tint for the faint-hearted! 2. NARS Semi Matte Lipstick, £17: A velvety long lasting finish that will vamp up your look. 3. Max Factor Flame Tree, £7.82: Hollywood glam for those on a budget. 4. Revlon Super Luscious Lipstick in Cherries in the Snow, £7.13: A gorgeous pinky-red perfectly suited to those with paler skin. 5. MAC Lipstick in Ruby Woo, £14: One of my make-up kit must-haves it’s a real winner!

Get the Look: Girls Aloud Girls Aloud have just put the finishing touches to their hotly anticipated album and this issue, the talented 4Fashion Events team show Ulster Life readers how to create their own winter twist on this sassy girl group’s comeback look.

Photography: Tony Webster

Hair

“December means only one thing - party central, and it’s easy for every fashionista to go from drab to fab in a matter of minutes with this simple top knot,” says Connor Kerr, Creative Director of 4Fashion Events. “This look is hassle free and designed to brighten up your seasonal style. If you want to recreate the look then opt for some light under layers, which means your hair will keep fresh during the party season.” “Secure your hair high with an elastic using a tiny bit of hairspray, such as Schwarzkopf hairspray silhouette, flexi hold (£5.75). Once secured use a light hairspray and a French pin to lightly tease some of the hair back out of your secured high pony tail.” “Finish the look by using a soft dressing brush and lightly back comb one or two times. Then twist the hair around the elastic base and

secure with French pins placing them into the shape and pulling back before placing to secure.”

Make-up

Every girl band knows how to pull off a glossy look whether it’s on stage or on the red carpet. Follow these quick tips to be camera ready at every party this festive season. “The most important advice is to invest in a great foundation that gives flawless coverage,” says Emma McConville, makeup artist for 4Fashion Events. “Next add a flush of colour to the cheeks with a blush such as Benefit’s Bella Bamba (£23.50).

To apply, smile and dash on the apples of the cheeks and blend in upwards. For the eyes, create a warm look with a mixture of pinks and oranges to brighten your complexion. Finish off with lashings of mascara to intensify your eyes.” “Finally, add a similar shade of pink to your lips and dab some clear gloss to to create the perfect pout for all of those party pics,” adds Emma. Book your own glamorous, festive makeover with the 4Fashion events team for £40. This offer applies until December 31st 2012. To book search 4Fashion Events on Facebook or call 07875261970.

Spa Slueth This issue a fabulous facial at Thérapie Clinic Belfast.

by Cathy Martin These winter days are dull, dreary and drab and I can tell you that I most definitely do not want my skin to reflect this! So this month, I booked myself in for a Resurgence Renewal Facial at Thérapie Clinic in Donegall Place to give my skin a desperately needed pick-me-up. The Resurgence Renewal Facial is part of the Doctor Murad Infusion Facial Collection that is exclusive to Thérapie Clinics in Ireland and is perfect for rejuvenating and refreshing older skin. (Am I saying I’m old? Certainly not!) My treatment began with my therapist Sharon cleansing my face using the Murad Renewing Cleansing Cream which is applied directly to the skin and then removed with delicate gauze. After prepping my skin,

Sharon started the peel by using the Murad Intensive Wrinkle Rescuer which is designed to reverse all signs of aging through hydrating and firming the skin. Sharon then swept the Murad Hydrating Toner across my skin using cotton pads. The toner is infused with camomile, cucumber and witch hazel making it highly relaxing and a sensory delight - pure bliss! Following this, Sharon covered my face with the Murad Firming Treatment Mask which calms the skin following the peel. She used the toner again and finished with the Murad Renewing EyeCream which is perfect if you’ve had a few too many late nights! Next, she applied the Murad Age Diffusing Serum which dramatically

increases the skin’s firmness and elasticity, and I could definitely feel this working straight away. To finish, Sharon used the lightweight Murad Sheer Lustre Day Moisturiser, a delicious combination of avocado oil and Shea butter. This moisturiser restores suppleness, texture and tone. Finally, she dabbed some of the Essential-C Eye Cream around my eye area which I snapped up afterwards to take home - believe me, once you try it, this will become an essential for your bathroom cabinet too! The treatment plan recommends a weekly visit for six weeks. By going in for the six week period you are ensuring that all new cells that have been created are in accordance with the treatment course. Thérapie also recommend that this facial is

followed with an iPixel facial, a non-invasive laser based treatment that uses the latest technology to remove signs of aging, scars and pigmentation and is the best way to maintain your brighter complexion. After the facial I noticed my skin (and disposition!) were immediately brighter. Nothing could dampen my bright mood, not even the dreary, dark skies of Belfast!

Hair Therapy all your hair dilemmas answered.

by Michael Quinn

Q: I am finding that this cold weather is making my hair really dry and brittle, and my scalp is slightly itchy, please help? This is a really common concern with a lot of my clients at this time of year. I call it the “winter woes”, I have no doubt that it’s the worst season for hair, not least because it tends to be the most stressful time of year and this can affect hair behaviour and cause scalp flaking and itching. Cold weather can also lead to drier, frizzier hair due to constant changes in temperature between central heating and back into inclement weather. Choose an ultra-gentle hair care regimen, like JOICO K-Pak Shampoo and Conditioner. These creamy formulas will cleanse and condition without drying or stripping hair or scalp to help minimise any itching and leave tresses shiny, strong and silky. Also regular TLC in the form of deep conditioning throughout the lengths at this time of year will

really rehydrate and keep winterweary strands healthy. The award winning JOICO K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructer results in an immediate noticeable difference in strength, texture and appearance. If strands are super thirsty I would suggest applying this treatment several times a week, cover hair with a plastic cap and relax in a nice hot bath for 20 minutes or so before rinsing off. Be sure to blow dry hair fully after washing and not leave over night to dry as this can damage hair and lead to further dryness.

Q: I recently decided to go for the chop and embraced the Pixie crop just like Rihanna’s, the trouble is I am finding it really difficult to style. Can you give me some advice? For the best finish with this style forget combs and brushes, I find it looks chicest if you finish it with your fingers and a little styling product. Simply apply a shapeenhancing styler like JOICO

Hair extensions are a great way of building up volume, creating texture and adding length, and my salon stocks the number one hair extensions brand, Racoon. These extensions are 100% ethically sourced, human hair extensions. All of Racoon’s products are scientifically proven to keep natural hair safe and healthy, and are endorsed by an independent trichologist. My Express Extensions Bar in the salon offers bonded hair extensions, weft hair extensions and clip-in hair extensions. The bonded extensions can last for up to six months with regular salon maintenance appointments so they’re perfect if you want to hold onto your long hair for longer. If however, you are looking for a more temporary solution then the weft hair extensions (which will last for four weeks) or clip-in extensions would be best for you. Also, remember hair extensions can be used to create a classically chic Christmas up-do. So book yourself in for a consultation and your longing for longed for locks will be within your grasp for the party-season.

Savvy Savings Feeling the festive pinch, well here are some money saving tips to help you in the run up to Christmas...

By Claire Wilson

ALL I want for Christmas is a Mulberry Handbag. An Effie Hobo Mulberry to be exact, the very same one I’ve spent far too much time pouring over in House of Fraser. At £575 it is probably worth every penny. But sadly, with Christmas fast approaching, its pennies I simply don’t have. But a girl can dream, can’t she? Or at least live in hope that the better half gets the hint (chance is a fine thing!) and I find that

69 little beauty wrapped up in gold under the Christmas tree. Until then, every penny counts, and with Christmas shopping in the pipeline, as well as one or two festive soirees, I’m going to be living on a budget for the next six weeks. But, how exactly can we make the elusive pay check go that little bit further? Well, I’ll let you in on a little secret - being on a budget doesn’t mean giving up on life’s guilty pleasures.

FASHIONABLY FRUGAL

I don’t know about you lot, but I love winter fashion - the scarves, the coats, the boots, and not forgetting the essential LBD for Christmas party season. If you are looking for high fashion at affordable prices then look no further than Primark. I’ve lost count of the many times I’ve been complemented on a piece of statement jewellery, or my new imitation leather jacket, which at just £25 was a complete steal. But, if your taste in fashion extends is more sophisticated, high end fashion chain Reiss are currently offering 50% discount on a selection of styles while stocks last - form an orderly queue ladies! Or, grab yourself a Victoria Square student discount card – registration for the card is simple, and once you have that shiny piece of plastic in your purse, you can enjoy at least 10 percent discount across participating stores and restaurants. Dinner in The Ivory or that fabulous red ‘Kyra’ coat from Coast might not be that unattainable after all.

BEAUTY BARGAINS

Although I love festive fashion, I’m less keen on winter weather. The elements are playing havoc with my skin. Top of my beauty bible is skin care saviour Liz Earle, I swear by her products. However, on a budget they simply won’t make it into my beauty cabinet this side of Christmas. Step forward my beauty find of the year, St.Ives Apricot Skin care range. It has all the ingredients of

70

luxury skincare, with half the price tag. And what’s more, ASDA are currently running a three for £7 offer across the entire St.Ives range. If your skin woes require more than a little DIY, Groupon and Living Social are offering some amazing beauty therapy deals from salons across Belfast, and what’s more, they are only a click away. Or, take a trip to my favourite little Spot - The Academy of Hair and Beauty on Rosemary Street - first class treatments, with a tiny price tag.

EAT CHEAP

So, you’re all dressed up, and your skin is buffed to perfection - but on a budget, you’ve got nowhere to go. Look no further than the many bistros and restaurants across the city offer meal deals

and early bird specials. Take Shelter from the cold in Darcy’s Bistro, where you can eat for £7.77, before 7pm, seven nights a week. Oh and did I mention, you can grab your first glass of wine for just £1.50. Or dine in the delicious YUM on Stranmillis, who run early bird specials six days a week. Alternatively, if you have time, log onto www.toptowndeals.com, you will be pleasantly surprised at the treats in store with offers such as dining for two in the fabulous Merchant Hotel for just £25! This is just a snippet of what Belfast has to offer if you find the cash flow getting thinner. For more helpful tips, have a look at our website, where I will be keeping you constantly updated on tips and offers. Plus, we might even get some valuable input from you lot.

Take a Trip to... Kate Wilson visits Edinburgh, to get a feel for what Scotland is really about, tartan and all. Edinburgh Do

For me, it is at this time of year that Edinburgh really comes to life. The winding cobbled streets of the city seem to lend themselves to winter and the historic bars and restaurants hidden away in the backstreets are such welcoming haunts from the bitter Scottish cold. Although it may seem an obvious choice when visiting Edinburgh in the run up to Christmas, the continental market is hard to beat. From 29th November East Princes Street Gardens will transform into Edinburgh’s very own ice rink so you can show off your skills twirling around on the ice. If you, like myself, consider ice skating to be more of a spectator sport, there is plenty to entertain on the sidelines including festive food and mulled wine to beat the chill. The ice rink will be open right up until Christmas eve so there’s no excuse not to give it a whirl. Along with the ice rink making an appearance, so will the traditional German Christmas Market and Edinburgh Farmer’s Market both exuding the sounds and smells of a traditional Christmas and the perfect place for finding some unique festive treats and gifts.

See

By far the best way to see Edinburgh, that is all of it at once, is by climbing Arthur’s Seat, just opposite the Palace of Holyrood House. The walk will only take a couple of hours and is by no means strenuous, just be sure to wrap up warm! Once you reach the summit, on a clear day stunning views can be seen over the

whole of Edinburgh city centre and beyond, stretching as far as much of East Lothian, Midlothian and across the Firth of Forth to Fife.

Shop

There’s only one place to start when shopping in Edinburgh, that is Harvey Nichols just off Princes Street. Its every shopper’s paradise with five floors of luxury brands and the most up to date fashion to drool over! When you’ve done all the shopping you can possibly handle, take rest bite in the delectable and aptly named ‘Forth Floor Restaurant’ where head chef Stuart Muir will treat you to fine dining, with striking views over Edinburgh. For High Street shopping, head straight to Princes Street, where there is a generous

The quality of these ingredients is self evident on tasting and the earthy flavours really compliment the time of year. www.grainstore-restaurant.co.uk The Grassmarket in Edinburgh is the best place to go for a lively night out and with so many bars to choose from, its hard to know if you’ve made the right decision! A personal recommendation would be The Beehive Inn. Its central location ensures that you can soak up the atmosphere, as well as a lot of fine Scottish whiskey from its expansive cellar! It consists of the main bar, a secondary bar (the Honeypot) and a meeting room which was often used by Prince Charles as a place to dine when he was based at Rosyth. selection, all of which is overlooked by the iconic ruins of Edinburgh Castle, as shopping destinations go, Edinburgh is truly unique.

Eat

The Grain Store in Edinburgh City Centre is undoubtedly the best place to sample the true tastes of Scotland. On entering the rustic restaurant, you are greeted with mouthwatering smells of the best Scottish game and seafood. What is so special about this restaurant? Aside from the sumptuous food on offer, is the emphasis that restaurant owners, Paul and Carlo put on the importance of homemade. From the fresh bread on arrival, the crisp crackers that come with the cheese, and absolutely everything in between is homemade, with

On a trip to Edinburgh there is nowhere that compares to the Nira Caledonia Hotel for timeless elegance. It’s decadent interior seems to come from a bygone era and the exterior is reminiscent of a Georgian gentleman’s residence. Located in the leafy new town, just a short stroll from Prince’s street, it is stepped in history, once being home to John Wilson, a close friend of Wordsworth and popular literary figure in Edinburgh in the early 19th Century. The rooms are all uniquely furnished with antiques in-keeping with the townhouse exterior, with some suites even boasting their own private garden terraces, and resisting the vast jacuzzi bath in each room is impossible! The restaurant which has undergone recent renovation specialises in authentic Scottish cuisine from Scottish porridge for breakfast right through to haggis, neeps and tatties with Islay whisky sauce for dinner. I would defiantly recommend this stunning hotel for an authentic slice of Scottish luxury. www.niracaledonia.com

Scandinavian Style Get in the driving seat of the Volvo XC60 D4 Lux.

by Graeme Wallace There has been an influx of Sports Utility Vehicles over the last ten years or so, the first of which that caught my eye was the original BMW X5, and arguably it played a pivotal role in kick starting the market here for luxury SUV’s. The annoying thing about these vehicles is knowing what to call them…SUV/jeep/4x4/soft roader, cross-over, truck? I tend to call them all jeeps, but we need to be careful with that as “Jeep” is actually a manufacturer of 4x4 vehicles. I have come across more 4x4 purists over the years than I care to quantify, most of whom have the elitist attitude that unless a 4x4/ SUV/jeep et al can climb/descend a 45 degree muddy hill on a sodden January afternoon, then it shouldn’t

be made....and usually followed by a “Chelsea Tractor” comment. I think the sales of all manner of these type of vehicles in the UK speak for themselves, proof of which we see on the likes of the Lisburn Road or Holywood High Street every day doing the school run.

The XC60 is a very handsome, classy and imposing vehicle in the flesh. The sharp modern lines are unique, with the swept back headlights, high level tail lights and rear quarters helping to set this SUV out from the crowd. Our test car was an inoffensive combination of white with large 20 inch diamond cut finish anthracite wheels, although this is a combo that

motoring

I feel is getting on a bit these days and a little predictable…..subtle brown metallic is going to be the next en vogue colour, and the XC60 would look even better in it. Nevertheless, it still manages to look sharper and more individual than its competitors, such as the clinical Audi Q5 and to a lesser extent the new BMW X3. The SE Lux model we tested was fitted with the optional aluminium “side scuff plates”, which do look quite good, but I kept catching them with my leg when entering or exiting the car, not ideal if the car is dirty and you’re dressed in your best en route to a party!

Inside

I’d like to take this opportunity to address something, and that is our total obsession with leather seats in cars these days. I think people feel that if you have anything other than leather seats in your car then you’re looked upon as a pauper. This is total rubbish, the only advantage to leather seats is how easy they are to clean, I personally do not see any other advantage to having them in a car. The XC60 is no exception, the seats are a little cold and the leather is quite hard, although with the heated seats switched on they’re pleasant enough….it’s worth noting though that both leather and heated seats are a cost option on the XC60. Therefore my suggestion is to save yourself some money and opt for cloth seats. Even on a freezing winter’s morning they won’t require heating as your toasty posterior will heat them naturally in seconds. I’m not sure if Volvo offer a suede/alcantara option, but if they do this is the option to choose, personally I would spec centre sections in alcantara and the bolsters in leather, an option which is popular on the Audi Q5. Volvo have a very clever simple interior layout, there’s no fussy switches or buttons to confuse you, and the floating style dash, which has become a feature in all recent Volvo cars, works equally well in the

XC60. The white lighting is crisp and sharp, and the use of aluminium trim helps with the modern feel, no old man walnut wood in here. The instrument binnacle design and dash is a welcome change from the sometimes dull offerings from the German marques, the colouring and materials are good, and the use of white lighting with the aluminium inlays is fresh and inviting. The centre screen on the dash shows heater controls, radio/ music settings, phone information

Vital Statistics: Volvo XC60 D4 AWD SE Lux Geartronic Model: 2400cc, 5 cylinder turbo diesel, all wheel drive, six-speed auto Price: £30,208 for the basic D4 manual SE, £44,565 as tested. and is adequate, but is perhaps a little small compared to the competition. Perhaps a car spec’d with sat-nav would have a wide screen version of this, a bit like the “Professional” option offered by BMW. Although the XC60 has a shorter wheelbase than the Audi Q5, there is ample space in the back, and due to the flatter transmission tunnel means the middle seat is more accommodating than the Q5. The seats are the usual large offerings we have come to expect from Volvo, and felt comfortable throughout my time in the car. The rear seats split and fold 60:40, but they don’t slide forward, nevertheless the boot is still longer and wider to that of the Audi. Great for families, the built-in booster cushion will be a welcome feature for any parent. The boot is pretty big, with seats up it’s 495 litres, and massive seats down at 1,455 litres.

Driving

I was expecting big things from this Swedish lovely, but I came away a little underwhelmed. Our test vehicle was fitted with the optional 20 inch wheels and low profile tyres, and the resulting ride over uneven surfaces was a little poor, especially

79 under 40mph where the XC60 felt unsettled and crashy over uneven surfaces and cats eyes. Although on perfectly smooth surfaces the ride was superb, and the damping of the suspension was excellent. Sadly on our roads smooth is not something we experience too often. Opting for the standard 18 inch wheels would largely overcome this issue, plus it would save you approximately £2k on the larger 20 inch wheels and mean much lower tyre costs come replacement time. The 6 speed “Geartronic’ auto gearbox was pretty straight forward and did what it needed to, although it falls a bit behind the offerings from BMW or Audi who now offer dual clutch 7 or 8 speed boxes, which help lower emissions and increase MPG. The 5 cylinder engine sounded great and performed quite well, especially when up to speed, it was particularly comfortable and enjoyable on a long run, although again the large 20 inch wheels made themselves known in the way of some additional road noise. The final trick the XC60 had for me was something that managed to get my heart racing, and unfortunately that wasn’t from power sliding it around Kirkistown race circuit, which I’m sure SMW would not have been too pleased about. I was pulling up in the office car park heading towards my usual space beside the hedge, and it soon became apparent that the XC60 didn’t trust my driving and decided it needed to help me stay out of the greenery by automatically applying 100% braking. Great safety feature there is no doubt, but I had no idea the car had it. It took me back to the day when my old driving instructor had to apply the brakes via his dual controls to prevent us bombing through a zebra crossing, I didn’t see either of these situations coming and both gave me quite a fright! So, for self-preservation, either drive everywhere with your driving instructor, or buy a Volvo XC60. Thanks to Brian at SMW Volvo.

An Irish Fairytale Photography: Nigel Williamson Wedding Photography

Racing car driver, Richard Lyons instantly knew that Gina Greco, a Senior Manager with Abercrombie & Fitch was the woman he wanted to marry. After about ten months and time spent liaising with family between where they lived, Tokyo, Richard’s parents in Hillsborough and Gina’s in Florida, it was at the Spanish Arch in Galway that Richard finally asked Gina to be his wife. Living in Tokyo and coming from different countries, the first thing was to decide where to marry,

but the couple chose Ireland and using the expert skills of wedding planner Angela Hunter from Birdsong Events, Castle Leslie was the perfect location for both the marquee reception and ceremony which also took place in the church on site, St. Salvador’s Church of Ireland, Glaslough. Eighty guests from America, Japan, Ireland and the rest of Europe came to celebrate and party with the newlyweds well into the wee small hours of the following day.

the final word

Up Close & Personal Former TV news reporter, Ivan Little, will reveal his feminine side as Lady Ma Ma - the grand dame - in Sleeping Beauty, this year’s Christmas pantomime at Belfast Waterfront! Here we catch up with the man behind the make-up! Who are you closest to? My family.

What is your earliest memory? Sitting in a pram in the driveway of my home in East Belfast and watching people going past.

What is your biggest fear?

Heights. I am 6’3” but I am terrified of heights. My daughter Emma once did the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb and I almost passed out looking at the pictures.

Relaxation is...

Watching football. And eating out. Not to mention drinking out.

What are you best at?

When did you last feel really happy?

This morning when I woke up and realised that I’d woken up.

What is your biggest regret?

I like to think it’s my ability to empathise with people and to see both sides of the story.

That my mum and dad didn’t see their grandchildren growing up into the wonderful young adults they’ve become.

What do you value in a partner?

What would you change about your life?

Honesty and humour.

What will shock us?

I am a fan of Coronation Street. I never miss it. I blame my wife Siofra.

I would probably go back to my first love - writing - a lot sooner than I did. But I enjoyed my 33 years in broadcasting. And I love my acting career too.

Sleeping Beauty runs from 24th November - 5th January at The Waterfront Hall, Belfast. To book tickets call the box office on (028) 9033 4455 or www. waterfront.co.uk
