Welcome In this issue of Ulster Life we catch up with Brenda Shankey to learn more about her new found fitness, which has led to a new bootcamp business here in Northern Ireland. Be sure to read her story, and as you’ll see the results speak for themselves - so get signed up to fit into that LBD this Christmas. Yes, I did dare mention Christmas but don’t worry we haven’t skipped Halloween because there’s a bit of a gothic, after dark theme running throughout our fashion, beauty, interior and travel pages. However, Christmas parties are on the horizon, so don’t forget to get your table booked at the province’s best eateries for some festive food and fun. Until next issue,

Fit & Fabulous This issue we try to keep up with the effervescent and energetic Brenda Shankey as she launches her new business venture.

by Margaret Connolly Brenda Shankey is a well known face in the world of male grooming alongside her husband Jason. However, in her quest to stay fit and healthy Brenda has teamed up with ex-Coronation Street actor, Scott Wright to bring his renowned bootcamps to Northern Ireland. Scott has been passionate about health and fitness since an early age and his profile in the fitness industry has been raised this year by training Kerry Katona.

Brenda, how did you first meet Scott and hear about his bootcamps?

Both Scott and I are friendly with actress Denise Welch and we met at her annual charity ball in Manchester and kept in touch. Knowing about his bootcamps I decided to go along and try one out.

Why did you feel the need to do a fitness bootcamp?

Sometimes in life you just get stuck in a rut. The weight is on and know you need to make a change and I felt that a bootcamp was the answer.

Also the promise of losing up to a stone in a week was too good to pass up! I do exercise regularly and I thought I ate well, but I’ve learnt so much from Scott’s bootcamps.

Did you see instant results?

During that first week-long bootcamp in July I lost a stone, and while I didn’t notice a huge change, my clothes were a lot looser on. More importantly though after this week I changed my whole outlook towards food and exercise. Rather than trying to find time for laborious workouts I began to take onboard the benefits of training for shorter periods everyday and eating healthily. This doesn’t mean following some faddy diet, just being sensible with my food choices and recognising the “good” fats that do need to be incorporated into your diet. With a fitness and food plan designed by Scott I spent four weeks at home continuing to strength train with my kettle bell instructor, Damien McErlean, I then went back for another one of Scott’s bootcamps and lost another

half a stone. So, overall in a six week period I lost 2st 4lbs. I have managed to keep all of this weight off and I’m still continuing to loose thanks to what I have learnt.

So, what’s a typical day like at the bootcamp?

You train for eight hours everyday. You are not up at the crack of dawn, it’s a civilised start at about 9am because you are exhausted from the day before. You have one hour circuit training before breakfast and then after breakfast there’s another hour long session of circuits. Then lunch and you’re off for a six-hour mountain hike.

Do you have to have a good level of fitness beforehand? The last bootcamp I was on there were two people over sixty taking part. There are all different ages and stages of fitness so no one should be put off giving it a try. There’s really no one that can’t do this sort of training because if you are tired or need to slow down you can, but to be honest

8

with others training around you do find that you push on because you don’t want to let anyone down.

Has life changed in the Shankey household because of your new eating and exercise regime?

Yes, we are all probably healthier as a result. I am cooking a lot more and I am also a lot more active and keen to get outdoors for a walk on a Sunday with the family. I’ve also learnt that 20 minutes exercise everyday is the most productive way to exercise, so I can take the kids to Stormont and sprint up and down the hills with them or go run after them around the park, so they are benefiting from getting out and being active with their mum. Generally, I’m a lot more energetic and feeling good in myself so this can only have a positive effect on everyone.

Do you ever fall back into old habits?

I do allow myself to relax at the weekends and I have my cheat days

when I don’t watch everything that I’m eating or drinking. To be honest though, I find that even having a glass or two of wine now really affects me, so I don’t miss the recreational glass or two in the evening after a busy day.

Why do you think these bootcamps will work here in NI?

Bootcamps are so popular throughout the rest of the UK and Europe. NI is the perfect place to grow a business like this. There is a market for those like me who want to lose weight and enjoy the benefits of a massive kick-start through a threeday or week-long bootcamp. You also learn so much from the trainers and chefs about how you should be exercising and what you should be eating and how to tailor the advice to your own needs to ensure a healthier lifestyle. Scott is going to come over here once a month and so far the

9

response has been great. This is a venture I’m really passionate about and I am proof that it works. I have gone from a size 12-14 to a size 8 in a couple of months and I feel fantastic both mentally and physically. I have so much more energy now and I am ready to plough it all into building up this new venture.

As well as launching a new business, how are you finding time for Children in Need Strictly Come Dancing?

I’m partnered with Paul Kennedy and I just love learning something new. Every year I like to do something for charity and I jumped at the chance of Strictly because I knew I would love learning the dances as well as the glitz and the glam on the night. The event takes place on 15th November at the La Mon Hotel & Country Club and I would urge everyone who can to come along and support us all, it will be a great night.

Fashion Focus Edwardiana

Touching on demure high necklines, elegant column evening dresses, riding jackets, tailcoats and chunky heeled brogues (to name a few) the trend, dubbed “Edwardiana takes a nostalgic look back to an intriguing period of fashion. Taking influence from the acclaimed period drama Downton Abbey – the romance, the drama and the elements of costume, this aristocratic trend takes you on decadent journey through early 20th century. This autumn/winter, designers plundered the archives sourcing pre-WW1 references, now expertly translated to the high street offering. The Edwardiana trend can be interpreted and styled to suit your personal taste. Dark & Stormy George takes to the West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK catwalk to get us ready for the dark nights of Autumn / Winter 2012 Having dressed the nation for a staggering 22 years, fashion label George is set to once again take the Northern Ireland fashion scene by storm, taking pride of place on the illustrious West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK catwalk during the ever-popular ‘High Street Show’ on Friday 19th October.

33

34 Created in 1990 as the brainchild of designer George Davies, George has gone from strength to strength and is now the third largest retailer of clothing in the UK. Over the years George has adopted a devoted legion of followers who come back time after time for the quality, stylish and affordable clothing which has become synonymous with the brand. George continues to stake its claim as the go-to label for the fashion conscious across the UK and further afield, receiving praise for its ability to have the very latest trends on the shelves in a New York minute and for the endorsements received by a stellar list of collaborators including bespoke tailor Charlie Allen and fashion legend, Barbara Hulanicki – founder of iconic London clothes store Biba, the first affordable fast fashion brand. According to Maggie Jardine, Manager of George NI, the key to the brand’s success has not only been its focus on creating stylish clothing at affordable prices but its unique 100 day guarantee – promising customers a level of quality which no other accessible fashion brand can. She also believes the label’s ability to take inspiration from around the globe – from street style to haute couture – and translate this into original accessible fashion sets George apart from other brands in its class. Already available to purchase in Asda stores across Northern Ireland and online through George.com with its free click and collect in store service, George is set to launch its newly unveiled ‘Concept 21’ design in Asda Portadown this November, which will bring the full stylish George offering to the Armagh area. With so much on offer from George, Maggie believes that it can only mean onwards and upwards and customers can expect hugely exciting things to come from George in the future. To purchase tickets to see George on the catwalk at the ‘High Street Show’ during WestCoast Cooler FASHIONWEEK go to www.belfastfashionweek.com and follow the link.

Quickfire Questions with Maggie Jardine Describe Your Style: I like to be on trend but always find an interesting way to put my own spin on an outfit by customising my clothes or accessorising with brooches or belts. Who is Your Style Inspiration: Sarah Jessica Parker – her style is always quirky and individual and she is never afraid to mix up her image or take risks with her look. Key Fashion Tip: Always accessorise! Whether you use a belt to tailor-make your own unique look or add layers to bring a different element to an outfit. AW2012 Must-Haves: Dresses are my go-to outfit of choice so I will be making sure I get my hands on the studded dress from the George AW2012 range and I will accessorise it with our fantastic gold shoes.

Embellishment: In the face of minimalism and restraint, designers across the globe have taken a different path, featuring runways showered with lavish detail, jewelencrusted designs, impressively ornate embroidery and more than a hint of ‘all that glitters’ festooning the must-have looks. Ably taking its cue from the couture labels, George translates these ornate designs into ready-to-wear looks with a mix of foil prints, textured materials and heavy embellishment. Vivid colour palettes form an integral part of this trend with intense blues, flame reds and bright oranges featuring heavily throughout the collection.

Making a comeback to the catwalk this season is the ‘Pretty Gothic’ trend. Picture dark fairy tales, models gliding down runways clad in glamorous black tones and draped in beautiful lace and sheer layers. George toughens up this look with dramatic leather, studding and metallic detailing taking centre stage helping recreate this popular trend without breaking the bank.

Marching forward for another season, the military trend focuses on functionality and utility with sharp, structured silhouettes, featuring alongside traditional military touches like epaulets, strong shoulders and elaborate embellishments. Khakis feature strongly in the George collection creating an engaging autumnal palette, as intense pine greens balance out the rich wine and scarlet reds which have been a constant across all the fashion capital runways. This year’s Autumn/Winter ranges are all about rugged masculinity and George has taken inspiration from the great outdoors for the palette of peat, berry and stone which feature heavily this season. Elsewhere in the range George casts an eye back to Northern Ireland’s industrial heritage with hardwearing cotton, waxed outerwear and fashionable knits showing strongly in the new collection. In formalwear, it’s all about heritage – chic, well-tailored jackets, luxe materials and vintage patterns will help any man turn it out in style this party season.

After Dark

Local make-up artist, Ciara Daly adds some gothic drama to your usual make-up look... by Ciara Daly So the autumn leaves are falling (eh did I miss the summer?) and the signs for Halloween are everywhere. Pumpkins, lanterns and plenty of ghoulish images. So, if you’re already thinking about your costume this year don’t forget about the perfect haunting make-up to give the overall look. Whether that is a vampire, witch or she-devil there are plenty of ideas to choose from. The team and I are already booking up for people wanting their make-up created at the studio for the parties and celebrations. So here I decided to give you a step-by-step guide on a vampy yet wearable look as seen in picture opposite. Firstly, I would recommend using Studio Fix foundation to create a flawless base in a slightly lighter shade than your own natural colour, to give a pale complexion. Apply using one of my base buffer brushes which gives quick and flawless results. Then apply your M.A.C Mineralize Skin Finish to help absorb any

oiliness from the skin and give the foundation staying power. Fill in and accentuate your eyebrows with a dark brown or black eyeshadow with a slanty tipped brush, making sure to tail off the ends. Then get to work on your dark and mysterious eyes, start with covering your eyelid with a black kohl pencil and then smudge slightly with a brush or a finger, this create the perfect base for a dark eyeshadow to stick to. I recommend Illamasqua’s Intense navy eyeshadow. Curl and apply mascara to lashes and add some flirty falsies if required. Apply M.A.C blusher in Harmony to contour just under the cheek bones working up towards temple. Finish the look with some vampy lips, giving them a dark purple base with Inglot crayon no.33 finished off with plenty of Inglot’s clear lipgloss in sleek 29a. You can alter the colour or the shades slightly to suit your required look but I hope you have fun trying!

Spa Slueth This month it’s time to be pampered at Luxe Day Spa.

by Cathy Martin As the winter months draw ever closer, the dark mornings are certainly becoming a lot harder to deal with – thank goodness that I’m in a job I love! And while I’m at it, thank goodness for Zara online! However, autumn morning blues are a distant memory after spending a day getting pampered at Luxe Day Spa in Clandeboye at the weekend. As soon as I arrived I stepped into my robe and slippers, which I rarely had to remove the whole day, bliss! Combine this with the chic surroundings and profusion of seductive scents, I relaxed instantly. Specialising in massage, I was really looking forward to my hour-long hot stone massage that uses a unique combination of hot basalt stones and essential oils to really ease tension and loosen

the muscles on my shoulders. The therapist was a total dream and an obvious professional who applied the perfect amount of pressure on my neck, shoulders and back – I was putty in her hands! At Luxe Day Spa incidentally all of the therapists are over 30, something which I found quite refreshing. The spa has its very own range of Luxe Body Care that is used during many of the face and body treatments on offer, however, my next treatment used Thalgo products. Thalgo is a French marine company, which harnesses the riches of sea minerals to provide healing and detoxifying elements to the skin. The Frigi Thalgo Wrap is an intensive treatment that encourages the elimination of toxins and excess fluids with immediate

results. It works by dropping the body’s temperature to make the muscles contract and this has a direct effect on the vascular supply which stimulates circulation. This is a great treatment as we approach the party season because it leaves you feeling inches lighter, firm and toned – what lady could resist? It’s also great for localised cellulite and tired, sore or heavy legs. The sub-zero, but fantastic treatment was definitely worth enduring for the amazing results. Feeling lighter but hungry I felt this was a good time for lunch. My package included a vintage afternoon tea with an extensive menu choice served in the relaxation area - the perfect way to refuel after a morning of TLC. After a lovely lunch the rest of the

afternoon was devoted to beauty! My hands and feet were left looking perfectly polished following a deluxe manicure and pedicure using Jessica Nail products and my body given a beautiful glow with a Vita Liberata spray tan - applied flawlessly and with great care – to help me maintain that summer glow. I left the spa a new woman, completely refreshed and rejuvenated with the weight lifted, ever so delicately, from my laden shoulders. I made sure to pick up some leaflets on my way out in order to provide subtle hints to the hubby for Christmas treats as there was so much more I would have loved to have tried, including therapies for both women and men and group appointments for the ultimate in pampering.

Hair Therapy all your hair dilemmas answered.

by Michael Quinn

Q. I would normally use a curling wand to style my hair but I feel this doesn’t really give the most natural tussled look. Any suggestions of how I can soften the curls to make it look like I’ve naturally wavy hair?

A natural and eye catching curl will bring a subtle touch of glamour to your look without looking like you have spent forever with a wand trying to achieve it. This is a concern that many of my clients express to me in the salon. Maintaining volume in the roots and soft waves in the lengths will also help to frame the shape of your face. Try applying JOICO Curl Activator to dried hair in the evening, use hands or a wide toothed comb to distribute evenly through hair and blast the hair dry then loosely plait sections of your hair and leave in overnight. This will really save time in the morning and will leave you with energetic curls that are controlled and separated, full of body and movement but

without crunchiness or looking too tight and defined. You can even go over some areas with the curling wand, particularly on the top section or if you have layers but be sure to soften these curls by brushing them out with a larger brush. Give a touch of shine to the look with a lightweight hairspray to ensure the soft curl lasts throughout the day.

Q. No matter what product I apply to my hair after straightening I can never completely rid the fly aways and frizziness. X factor judge Nicola Scherzinger seems to know the secret, her hair always looks perfect!

The good news is that you don’t need a stylist on hand to achieve a glossy and sleek finish like Nicole. Firstly be sure to use the right hairbrush when blow drying the hair straight as this can really make a difference to the finished look. I would always suggest a cushioned square paddle brush with natural

product before blow drying and to finish the look and protect the hair from the cold autumn elements that can aggravate frizz pump one to two pumps of JOICO K-Pak Protect + Shine Serum. This concentrated daily replenishing silk silicone treatment tames flyaways, smoothes the surface of the hair and provides instant lustre and shine.

Q. I have really thick, coarse hair and I never take time to do anything lovely with it – I usually just wear it down or tied back in a pony but with a special occasion on the horizon, I want to do something outside of the norm.

boar bristles, it smoothes as it lengthens the hair with very little effort. The paddle brush encourages hair to lie flat and is better for hair which is not heavily layered, as it does not create volume. The longer nylon bristles penetrate the hair to detangle unruly, knotty tresses while the boar bristles grip the hair shaft to straighten hair, creating frizz-free looks. JOICO K-Pak Smoothing Balm is designed for anyone who desires straight, smooth hair. It works on curly or wavy hair, fine or thick hair which straightens, conditions and eliminates frizz. Apply this

The twisted up do is a classic yet stylish look with everyone from the Hollywood A-list to models on the catwalk sporting this style. It is also really quick and easy to create yourself and will be up away from the neckline to show off the detail in your dress. First of all section the front of your hair away from the back section and place the back section up into a high ponytail and then twist it into a bun. Set this in place by spraying a little JOICO Joifix Firm hairspray. It provides maximum hold for all hair types and style. Next divide the front section into two and twist the hair as tight as you can and then wrap it around the bun. Carry on doing that until all front sections have been wrapped in twists around the bun. Finish by applying a little Joifix Firm product on to the back of your hand and gently dab your hand around the hairline to soften the look then apply a little spray once again all over. This non aerosol firm-holding finishing spray provides a humidity resistant hold in any climate and will ensure the look stays in place all day and night.

A Golfer’s Paradise This issue we step inside the home of local golfing sensation Rory McIlroy... Photography by Bradley Quinn There’s no doubt that this is a stunning, spacious home. Nestled in the Moneyreagh countryside, a mere 25 minutes from south east Belfast and Belfast City Airport, this is a contemporary, rural retreat only a short journey away from the hustle and bustle of city life. A secluded, private abode, once you’ve made your way through the entrance gates and up the sweeping driveway flanked by mature hedges,

you come upon a second set of entrance gates and separate double timber gates to the upper courtyard and outhouses which include a refurbished barn suitable for a gymnasium. There is also space for stables in this part of the property. The award winning gardens extend to approximately six acres and feature manicured lawns, beautifully planted borders, mature trees and hedges. A natural fresh water pond

is a delightful central focal point. The remaining eight acres feature a professionally created golf practice area with four greens; two of bent grass to US PGA standard and two greens of fescue grass similar to those on the European tour. A golf driving range with various tee and green positions and a Fifa standard Astroturf putting green complete the golf practice area. A floodlit “all weather” tennis court is currently covered by a “3G” artificial grass five-a-side pitch. A sun terrace and separate BBQ area with built-in bench seating and polished granite food preparation area is situated just outside the kitchen. The exterior of this home certainly offers the “wow” factor before you even open the door to the 6,000sq. ft of living space. The welcoming reception with its double height ceiling lets light flood in as you make your way into the other rooms found downstairs. The drawing room features a double sided gas fire and a large sliding concealed oak panel divides this room from the reception hall. From the drawing room you step

up into an inviting sun room with superb views over the gardens to the freshwater pond. Sliding oak display cases act as dividers between the drawing room and the adjoining family room. A focal point downstairs has to be the stunning Poggenpohl kitchen with its black high gloss finish and black Aga. This kitchen boasts the very best appliances including Subzero freezers drawers, a Blanco sink unit, Quooker hot water tap and many more high end design features. With shopping to rival London and a welcoming atmosphere that puts New York to shame, there’s no reason than to travel further than the couple of hours it takes to get to Dublin for a weekend of fine food, lively entertainment, high end shopping and a great night out. Tourism in the city peaked in 2007, but is again benefiting from steady growth. Better the devil you know! The Audi A3 2.0TDI Sport

by Graeme Wallace This is the third incarnation of the premium Audi A3 hatch offered by Audi, a model first released in 1996 to a relatively muted welcome. To date Audi have sold approximately 300,000 A3’s, most of which were the second-generation cars sold between 2003 and 2012. At first glance it is pretty obvious there has been no dramatic changes to the aesthetics of the new A3, as Audi play it safe….again.

Outside

Audi have been especially conservative with the external appearance of the new A3, the familiar lines, window shapes and overall dimensions are instantly recognisable as an A3, however look closely and the eagle eyed amongst you may notice a longer wheel base, shorter overhangs and the latest Audi family ‘goatee’ style front grille. The headlights house rather fancy daytime running lights, which are required to meet some Euro legislation that I won’t bore either of us with, but who cares when the lights look so good. Our test car came the ‘Xenons Plus’ headlight upgrade, which included LED daytime running lights strip, LED rear lights, LED brake lights and rear indicators, all of which are a worthwhile extra in my opinion, especially coming in to the dark Winter months. This new look for

motoring the A3 bears a striking resemblance to the smaller Audi A1 and larger A4 & A6, Audi have successfully managed to make many elements of their cars look very familiar, and for me the jury is still out on whether that’s a good thing or not. The lower door and quarter panels get some sharp creases that make the car look like it’s moving fast even when parked up, and the angular wing mirrors sit well with this sharp streamline design. The chrome exhaust tailpipe trims are a nice finishing touch to the rear of the car and a vast improvement over the outgoing model. Underneath all this rather recognisable bodywork are some pretty impressive technological improvements over the previous iterations of the A3. The VW Group MQB platform that underpins this new A3 will be common across a range of VW Group models, including the upcoming Mk7 Golf, but Audi has introduced the use of aluminium construction here and trimmed 176lb off the weight, the equivalent of a fully grown Ulster Life Editor. The seats are thinner and lighter by 11lb, aluminium front wings and bonnet save 22lb, high-strength steels 40lb, then there's 55lb out of the passenger safety cell and a little more out of the engines and front axle.

Inside

Here we get to the reason why the A3 is likely to be another success for Audi, it is the class leading interior that greets you as you step inside. The Audi A3 is considerably more expensive than some of the competition, such as the Volvo V40, new Focus, 1 Series BMW and even the upcoming Mk7 Golf, but none of them come close to the interior quality of the A3, although I expect the Mk7 Golf when it arrives later this year will not be far off the mark. Make no mistake, this interior isn’t just an improvement over the outgoing model, it raises the bar to a whole new level that trounces all the rivals in the segment. In fact the

73 interior of the new A3 puts almost any other car to shame that I have set foot in over the last 12 months, and it genuinely feels like you’re sitting in a car costing twice the price. Audi interiors and ergonomics have always been well renowned for their high quality feel and use of class leading materials, and this is what buyers pay that little bit extra for. Our test car was the ‘Sport’ model with a few optional extras added from the factory; the sat-nav system is a revelation, with a large 7 inch tablet style screen (only 11mm thick) that slides up and out of the dash board. This is controlled via the latest generation of MMI dial that we first saw in the Audi A8, which is very slick indeed. The surrounding buttons of this MMI system are made from brushed aluminium, adding further to the premium feel to the interior. The stereo system on our test car was standard, but the sound was more than adequate with ample bass, treble and mid range to allow me sufficient enjoyment of the ‘Seriously 80’s’ album that was playing via Bluetooth from my iPhone. The test car was a tech-geek’s dream having the optional Technology Pack, which included hard drive and SD card readers, Bluetooth, aux-in for iPod etc, 3D style birds eye view sat-nav and so on. This car is designed to keep even the most avid gadget fan amused during their journey, all of which can be controlled either from the MMI system or the steering wheel controls. The old manual style handbrake has been replaced by the increasingly common electric handbrake, which is a small switch behind the MMI controls. The seats in our test car were optional half leather with alcantara/ suede centres, which in my view is far superior to full leather. The alcantara means no more cold bums on winter mornings, it also holds you in the seat much better than cloth or leather when on the move, and doesn’t become all shiny and saggy which is a fate many leather seats often suffer. Space up front is great for

74 all sizes of people, however the rear seats are a little cramped and anyone close to or above 6ft will struggle. The 5-door Sportback model will go some way to overcome this problem though. In front of the gear stick are two large cup holders, and as further proof of Audi’s impressive ergonomics each have are lit around the rim to ensure your interior remains spill free even at night. The heater vents now have large stylish chrome surrounds which switch each vent on or off; I particularly liked these as vent controls are often very fiddly when on the move. These little touches are what Audi do very well. Boot space is improved over the outgoing model, with capacity increased by 15 litres to 365 litres with the rear seats in place. Fold the rear seats down and this increases to 1,100 litres, which is 5 litres more than the BMW 1-Series. Internal storage space is good with two large door pockets and an equally cavernous glove box. There is also additional storage space under the centre arm rest, with the Technology Pack this is also where the aux-in cable is located for your phone or iPod.

Driving

Our test car was the 2.0 TDI 148bhp engine with manual gearbox, it has an added 8bhp over the outgoing model but crucially weighs some 176lb less, as a result the car feels sharper with more torque and less body roll. The Sport suspension is 15mm lower than that of the SE, which adds to the firm and confidence inspiring handling even when pushing on. There is the usual vagueness to the steering on the A3, but that is something we have come to expect of Audi’s over the years, but when up to speed there is decent feedback from this new ‘Electromechanical power steering’. My biggest criticism from driving this car is the lack of any mechanical feel to the gear change, there’s no disputing it is smooth, but it’s so smooth it feels artificial. The Sport model as tested also had

motoring the Audi Drive Select system, and by selecting either comfort, auto, dynamic or efficiency this changes the vehicle characteristics by adapting power steering assistance, accelerator and gearshift response. This is a bit of a gimmick and I found myself just choosing ‘auto’ rather than fiddling around in the menu and risking burying the shiny test car into the Sainsburys lorry up ahead of me. The sheer amount of selectable options and buttons to play with I found to be very distracting, but I’m sure it would all become second nature after a few days with the car. The optional 18” wheels and tyres on the Sport model created some rather unwelcome road noise, but they certainly look better than the smaller standard 17” items that come standard. The diesel engine doesn’t sound as agricultural as many of the A3’s rivals, and pulls well from low down making day to day driving effortless without having to work it too much. Gearshift lights on the lovely monochrome instrument binnacle advises you of the optimum time to change up gears for maximum fuel efficiency, and this obviously works well when the combined MPG of this car is claimed to be a smidge over 68mpg. That is impressive, and will be a significant attraction to the company car drivers; also worthy of note is ‘Start-stop system’, the 106g/km CO2 emissions rating and the £20 annual Road Fund Licence (£0 for first year of registration). If you’re after a luxury grown up hatch with a real quality feel to it, the new A3 may well be the car for you. Yes it’s expensive, and if you got carried away with the optional extras list you could easily add 30% to the basic price, but what you get for your money is unrivalled in terms of fit and finish, and with pretty strong residuals and low running costs I think the A3 isn’t as expensive in the real world as the sticker price would have you think. Thanks to Jillian, Colin and Damien at Belfast Audi.

The Boardroom has a range of cashmere and lambs-wool sweaters, shirts, belts, ties and shoes that are also made to measure to compliment its offering. The result is items created by its owner, made by the hands of tradition and passion and envied by those who see it worn.

Andrea Devlin and Kevin Lee McQuade (known as Lee), tied the knot back in May at the Parish of Saint Vincent de Paul where Andrea’s uncle, Father Patrick Devlin, who married the couple, is the parish priest. In the church instead of flowers at the end of the pews they had photo frames. On the brides side pictures of Andrea, then on the grooms side pictures of Lee. The reception was at Belfast

Castle and the newlyweds celebrated with family and friends from across Ireland and London where they now live. Guests enjoyed an outdoor drinks reception on arrival at Belfast Castle and watched Irish dancers perform a routine around the fountain. Instead of having a band there was a casino in one of the rooms at the castle, it was just after dinner so in the favours they gave everyone pretend money to play with!

It was love at first strike for Charlene Ardis and Simon McCammick after their first bowling alley date! An unconventional, yet quirkily romantic proposal involving “The Proposal” dvd and a chocolate heart with the words “marry me” and then “yes” in return eventually led to a beautiful wedding in the

surroundings of the Ballydugan Mill in Downpatrick. Keeping things simple and natural, Charlene made a lot of the decorations herself from recycled items. One of the highlights for guests had to be the Chinese lantern favours which they set alight at dusk and watched float into a red sky.

the final word

Getting to know you! As one of Belfast’s top hair stylists, Andrew Mulvenna is used to listening to his clients’ life stories, but here we get up close and personal with the man himself... Who are you closest too? My husband and partner of 22 years, Sean McCann.

What is your earliest memory?

I was three or four and living in Naas, Co. Kildare watching dozens of hot-air balloons one summer’s evening. It is still such a warm, lovely, vivid memory.

What is your biggest fear? Not appreciating life.

Relaxation is..

Walking in the park with my new mini dachshund, Mr.Tibbs.

What are you best at?

I haven’t worked that out yet as I’m a bit of an all-rounder, but I have discovered I’m rather good at teaching, hence my travelling.

What do you value in a partner?

Commitment, trust, friendship and the ability to have fun together.

What will shock us?

I really couldn’t say, I’m a Scorpio, next question.

When did you last feel really happy?

Anyone who knows me would hopefully say I am a happy person. I am supremely thankful for my “lot” in life and right at this moment I am educating in Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore so believe me it puts any niggles I have into perspective.

What is your biggest regret?

I try not to dwell on regrets as they make us live in the past and stop us from living in the present which is where we should live, but I do wish I had studied harder at my foreign languages at school.

What would you change about your life?

That’s simple, nothing. I love everything about my life and thanks to a mixture of luck and hard work I do, at times, think I am the luckiest man alive. Many people just don’t realise how lucky they are compared to others in the world.

Andrew Mulvenna Hair Spa is the official hair partner for this year’s West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK. For an appointment phone 028 9024 9191.
