GOLF COURSE AND FACILITIES

Cumberland Trail Golf Club, Pataskala, Ohio The Panthers are fortunate to call Cumberland Trail Golf Club their home. The course, designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, opened in 1999 and measures up to 7,205 yards from the back tees. Known for its excellent conditioning and difficult design, Cumberland Trail ranks fourth in Central Ohio among public golf courses, according to Mid Ohio Golfer, and received 3.5 stars from Golf Digest. The greens at Cumberland Trail are considered by many to be the finest in the Columbus area and challenge even the best putters. The ODU golf team has unlimited access to the facility which includes a driving range and large practice green.

Practice Facilities ODU golfers have the ability to practice year round at one of two practice facilities. Bridgeview Driving Range, located just 6 minutes from campus, serves as the outdoor practice facility during the Spring and Fall. Grass tees, a large putting green, and an excellent short game practice area are just a few of the benefits available to our teams. When the weather turns cold, ODU players practice at “The Dome”, the largest indoor driving range in Ohio. “The Dome” measures a full 90 yards from front to back and the indoor temperature is kept around a comfortable 60 degrees. It provides the perfect environment to continue to improve during the cold winter months.

The long par 3, 17th is the signature hole at Cumberland Trail. With water along the entire right side, a par on this hole is often regarded equal to a birdie.

2012-2012 MEN’S SEASON PREVIEW

Entering its third year at the NCAA Division II level, the Ohio Dominican Men’s golf program continues to excel. Evidence of the growth was evident last year, which saw four top five finishes and 11 top-20 finishes. Head coach Chris Deibel welcomes six seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and one entering freshman to the Panther family, and he believes that the experience factor of the upperclassmen will be a critical, if not an essential part of this year’s squad. Highlighting the cast of returners is senior Kevin Hartoin (Cincinnati, Ohio). Hartoin, coming off a successful 2010-11 season, continued to be stellar last season, collecting three top 10 finishes, including a season best fourth place at the GLIAC Preview and an eighth place finish at ODU’s Kisor Classic. Hartoin shot an average of 70.40, which is a career best. Off the course, he picked up another Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar award, making it his second to date. Also returning for the Panthers is senior Tyler Sebert (Grove City, Ohio). Sebert captured medalist honors at the GLIAC Preview, held at the Elyria Country Club in Elyria, Ohio. Sebert shot a one-under par 71 (35-36). Last season’s results included three top-10 finishes that featured a tie for seventh at the Strimer Memorial Invitational (77-77) and the Ashland Invitational (78-73). He finished his junior season with a 77.60 shooting average with a low day of 71. During the fall, Sebert competed in four events with a 10 round average of 78.8, while also adding a pair of top-25 finishes. Rounding out the seniors are Ben Calvert (Franklin, Ohio), Matt Culp (Pickerington, Ohio), Blake Harpenau (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Connor Stookey (Milford, Ohio). Only appearing in the ODU Kisor Classic, Calvert tied for 30th with a score of 168 (87-81). Culp played in four events/seven rounds for the Panthers in the 2011-12 season, and finished with a scoring average of 83.90. He finished a season’s best T34 at the ODU Kisor Classic where he shot 171 (90-81) and at the Strimer Memorial Invitational where he shot a 160 (81-79). He was just as successful of the course as he picked up his second GLIAC All-Academic Excellence award. As a transfer from Cincinnati State, Harpenau will compete in his first season as a Panther this year. Harpenau is a two-time National Junior

College Athletic Association All-American and was twice named to the First-Team All-Ohio Community College Athletic Association. He finished as the runner-up by one stroke at the NJCAA National Championships at the Chautauqua Country Club in New York. Stookey returns to the Panther squad after a successful 2011-12 campaign. Stookey garnered two top-20 finishes, including a fifth place score of 153 (79-74) at the ODU Kisor Classic. At the NCAA Midwest Fall Regional, he tied for 18th after shooting four-over par 148 (73-75). Representing the juniors are Alex Nikias (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Nick Reardon (Dublin, Ohio). Nikias finished his sophomore season with an average of 80.80 and tied for 15th at the ODU Kisor Classic with a 36-hole score of 161 (7982). Reardon transferred from Division III DePauw University in Indiana and will be competing in his first year for the Panthers. As a member of the Tigers squad, he was a PING Great Lakes All-Region and AllNorth Coast Athletic Conference selection and made the NCAA All-Freshman team in 2010. The sophomore class welcomes back Kyle Burgess (Lancaster, Ohio) and Conor O’Hea (Middletown, Ohio). O’Hea led the duo in scoring average with a 78.60 and events with eight. He had one top-5 finish along with two top-10’s and three top-20’s, which included a tie for 13th with a score of 160 (83-77) at the ODU Kisor Classic. Burgess, who also had a successful freshman campaign, played in seven events, with a shooting average of 79.20 and a pair of top-20 finishes that included a tie for 18th at the Kisor Classic. Rounding out the Panther roster and freshmen class is Tyler Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio). Smith graduated from Elder High School, which qualified for the state tournament. He was selected as the team’s co-MVP and made the All-City team. In addition, he received first-team all-league honors and was selected to the Cincinnati Enquirer Honorable Mention team. “I am looking forward to this year,” Deibel stated. “We have a returning group of experienced players that I feel can do very well.”

2012-13 WOMEN’S SEASON PREVIEW

The 2011-12 women’s golf program saw four top-five finishes, which included a championship at the Lake Erie/Qdoba Invitational hosted by Lake Erie. But having lost four seniors, the Panthers, on paper, figure to face a rebuilding campaign this season. However, veteran head coach Chris Deibel, now in his 10th year, is confident that this year’s returning upperclassmen along with the addition of three new faces, will keep the Panther squad at or near the same level of excellence as last year’s team. The Black & Gold welcomes back senior Amanda Costanzo (Silver Lake, Ohio) and junior Ashley Swartz (Lima, Ohio). Costanzo played in eight events and 15 rounds for the Black & Gold. She placed a season best tie for ninth at the Harmony Spring Break Invitational in Florida. Costanzo shot an average of 86.90 with a season low 82 and earned all-academic honors from the GLIAC

Kyre tied for ninth with a pair of 91s. Kyre posted an 88.0 shooting average after the 2011-12 season. The Black & Gold introduce three new fresh faces in Emily Crow (Lima, Ohio), Jamie Ellison (Mason, Ohio) and Krista Johnston (Ashtabula, Ohio). Crow, a Lima Shawnee graduate, was a three-time All-Northwest District selection where she helped guide the Indians to three consecutive Western Buckeye League Tournament Championships. She steered the team to two sectional titles and a pair of top-10 finishes at the Division II State Tournament, including a third place finish in 2010. Ellison, a Mason High School graduate, was a three-year letterwinner for a Comets team that won three straight Division I State Champions from 2008 to 2010. She was twice named to the All-Greater Miami Conference First-Team. Johnston, a four-year letterwinner for Lakeside High School, finished her golf career as a four-time all-county first teamer and district qualifier. As a junior, she was named the Ashtablua Star Beacon County Player-of-the-Year and NEOGGCA Co-Golfer-of-the-Year after leading the Dragons to their first of two team runners-up titles.

As a sophomore last season, Swartz finished with an 86.30 average in seven events and 13 rounds. At the Harmony Spring Break Invitational, she equaled her season low round and tied for medalist honors with an 84 (43-41). In doing so, Swartz became just the fifth golfer to win a title in program history and second this year. With her success on the course, came success in the classroom as Swartz picked up a GLIAC Academic Excellence Award. Sophomores Kelsey Auditore (Dayton, Ohio), Danielle Misencik (Concord, Ohio) and Lauren Kyre (Pickerington, Ohio) return to the Panther squad for the 2012-13 season. At the Lake Erie Qdoba Mexican Grill Fall Invitational, Auditore became just the third player in school history to take home individual medalist honors as she battled the rain and cold to record an eight-over par 82 (43-39). She finished her freshman campaign shooting an average of 89.10, appearing in six events and 10 rounds. In the same tournament, classmate Misencik finished the par 74 course with an 11-over 85 (39-46), just three shots behind Auditore.

The blend of experience and youth, combined with talent and energy seemingly will put the Panthers in a position of strength. However, as Deibel is quick to point out, “We can be a talented team, but in order for that to happen, we must be at our best in both practice and during matches.” There is definitely room for optimism, and if Deibel’s belief in the players translates to their best effort, it will be a great season on the links for the Black and Gold.

The spring break trip to Harmony, Florida proved to be a success for the young Panthers as Misencik finished in a tie for sixth with an 88 (45-43) and

University Overview Ohio Dominican University is an accredited four-year liberal arts institution, founded in 1911 in the Catholic and Dominican traditions. The university has more than 3,100 students and offers undergraduate degrees in over 50 majors as well as six graduate degree programs. Ohio Dominican uses a studentcentered approach, with a commitment to quality teaching and learning and a number of academic programs of distinction. Academics are at the heart of everything done at Ohio Dominican University. Institutions of higher learning exist to provide education for their students, and that education starts in the classroom. It continues, of course, on athletic fields and in residence halls, in rehearsals and clubs, in the library and the lab, but it begins with the relationship between students and their instructors. ODU’s mission is grounded in our identity as a Catholic and Dominican liberal arts institution. The University’s motto - “To contemplate truth and share the fruits of that contemplation with others” - serves as our guiding principle of teaching and learning. ODU’s core curriculum, taken by all students, focuses on seven learning outcomes that collectively identify the institution’s expectations for what all students will be able to be and do as Ohio Dominican graduates. Additionally, students complete a sequence of courses in one of

The University is significantly expanding the level of on-campus student extracurricular activities and improving residential life. At the same time, Ohio Dominican has expanded its extracurricular offerings, providing a greater number of on-campus activities for both residential and commuter students. A central focus has been the addition of a new Student Center and expansion of athletic programs, which attract student athletes and non-athletes alike, and foster alumni participation. Student organizations and activities at ODU offer events and activities that relate to areas of academic interest, student government, artistic performance, multicultural identity, media, athletic, social, honorary, religious and service organizations. Ohio Dominican student activities and events are open to all students. Over the past 10 years, Ohio Dominican has followed an aggressive expansion plan for its facilities which include three new residence halls; additional sports and recreation facilities; development of Sunbury Road as a gateway to the campus; the new Bishop James A Griffin Student Center and a new science facility, Battelle Hall. The 2010 - 2011 academic year was a special time for the institution as its students, faculty, staff, alumni, community leaders and friends celebrated the University’s Centennial anniversary. The Centennial theme, A Century of Transforming Lives, reflects ODU’s Dominican heritage, history and tradition. This celebration encourages the University community to reflect upon the transformative effect that Ohio Dominican has had on the lives its faculty, students, alumni, staff and friends. Ohio Dominican is focused on becoming the preeminent Catholic institution of higher learning, providing quality programs in both the liberal arts and the professions, committed to the fundamental value of liberal education, and deeply rooted in its Dominican tradition. ATHLETIC FACILITIES

Panther Field

Panther Softball Field

Football, Men’s and Women’s Soccer Ohio Dominican University continues to demonstrate progressive improvement to its athletic facilities with the addition of Panther Field. Built in 2004, our newest athletic facility is home to our football team and men’s and women’s soccer teams as well as our club level lacrosse team. To withstand the wear and tear of constant use, Panther Field is equipped with the latest in artificial surfaces, SprinTurf®. The field has a seating capacity of 1,750 with a 42-foot press box located at the top of the home bleachers. Recent additions to Panther Field include bleachers on the guest side of the field with a capacity of 500 and a building that houses a ticket office, concession stand and restrooms. Lights were also recently added to the facility, an addition that makes Panther Field one of the finer facilities of its size in the Midwest. The new facility replaced ODU’s former natural grass soccer complex and is located next to Alumni Hall on the west side of campus.

Alumni Hall

Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Volleyball Opened in 1989, Alumni Hall has a seating capacity of 3,000 and is the home of the women’s volleyball and the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Alumni Hall was given a much needed renovation and expansion in 2009-10. One fulllength basketball court was added, the hardwood was resurfaced, and bleachers were added to the far side of the court. After the renovation all of the coaches now have an office on the second floor of Alumni. There are also several rooms that coaches may utilize to review game tape, hold team meetings and meet with future and current Panthers. Some of the other amenities in Alumni Hall are four locker rooms, the Black and Gold Room, a spacious conference room, a refurbished weight room that is available to both students and student-athletes, and an athletic training room. Alumni Hall has the capability of accommodating three regulation size basketball and volleyball courts.

Panther Courts

Men’s and Women’s Tennis Also on the grounds of the Ohio Dominican Sports Complex west side location are six regulation size tennis courts complete with lights. The courts were recently resurfaced with a blue Latex-ite® coating that resembles the courts that host the U.S. Open Championship. The tennis courts are enclosed with a green chain link fence to accommodate the Panther men’s and women’s tennis teams.

Panther Valley/Frank Damian Field Baseball

First time visitors are pleasantly surprised by the hidden beauty of Panther Valley as they descend upon ODU’s prized baseball diamond. Sunken well below street-level and masked by plentiful trees, the only evidence of what awaits below is the echoing “ping” of aluminum bats meeting baseballs. The field is complete with a batting cage, home bullpen beyond the left field line and a visitor bullpen along the right field line. A recent addition to Panther Valley is a state-of-the-art scoreboard complete graphics and animatronics. Panther Valley has developed year-by-year to the point that it is now considered one of the finest college baseball facilities in the country.

Over the years Panther Softball Field has evolved into one of the nicest facilities in the state of Ohio. The brick dust field is routinely praised by Panther opponents as the epitome of what a field should be. With its dimensions of 210 to the corners and 225 to straight away center, this softball complex features enclosed dugouts, a scoreboard, bullpens beyond the left field line, and an underground irrigation system.

Hitting Facility Located next to the softball field is the hitting facility for both the baseball and softball teams. The hitting facility provides a place for both teams to refine their skills through the harsh Central Ohio weather. With the retractable nets, the hitting facility contains three batting cages complete with pitching mounds and pitching machines.

Panther Training Facility Along with the addition of the new stadium in 2004, the Panthers added a 7,500 square foot training facility west of the main parking lot. The facility is equipped with the latest in hammer strength weight training equipment and ODU’s second athletic training room. Offices for athletic training personal are also located in the new facility.

Cumberland Trail Golf Club The Panthers are fortunate to call Cumberland Trail Golf Club their home.

Golf Practice Facilities ODU golfers have the ability to practice year round at one of two practice facilities. Bridgeview Driving Range, located just 6 minutes from campus, serves as the outdoor practice facility during the Spring and Fall Grass tees, a large putting green, and an excellent short game practice area are just a few of the benefits available to our teams. When the weather turns cold, ODU players practice at “The Dome”, the largest indoor driving range in Ohio. “The Dome” measures a full 90 yards from front to back and the indoor temperature is kept around 60 degrees. It provides the perfect environment for the golfers to improve during the cold winter months.

THE GLIAC

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), founded in 1972, has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women for 40 years. The charter members of the GLIAC were Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Northwood University (then Institute), and Saginaw Valley State University. Expansion of the GLIAC began immediately with the addition of Oakland University in 1974. Hillsdale College, Northern Michigan University, and Wayne State University were accepted as members in 1975. In 1977, the conference lost its first member when Northern Michigan withdrew. Michigan Technological University filled the vacancy when it became a member in 1980. After the 1986-87 season, Northwood left the conference and was replaced by Northern Michigan. Northwood rejoined the conference in 1992. After the 1989 season, the conference dropped football as a sponsored sport. The conference schools sponsoring football joined the members of the Heartland Collegiate Conference in forming the football-only Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC), which began play in 1990. After nine years as one of the premier conferences in Division II football, the MIFC merged as part of GLIAC on July 1, 1999. With the merger, the University of Indianapolis became an associate member as a football-only school. The GLIAC entered a new era in the 1995-96 school year. Prior to that time, all GLIAC member institutions were located in the state of Michigan. On Dec. 14, 1994, membership was offered to three schools located in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The expansion members were Ashland University of Ashland, Ohio, and Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, both located in Erie, Pennsylvania. All three schools began their membership July 1, 1995. On July 1, 1997, membership was granted to The University of Findlay, located in Findlay, Ohio. UF replaced Oakland University, which withdrew from the conference after the 1996-97 season as it moved to NCAA Division I status. The GLIAC membership changed again when Tiffin University of Ohio joined the conference in the 2008-09 academic year. Tiffin was offered membership on June 20, 2007. The addition of Tiffin left the GLIAC with 12 full-time members as Gannon and Mercyhurst moved to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference after the 2007-08 season.

The GLIAC entered a new era during the 2009-10 academic year. Commissioner Tom Brown, who had presided over the league for 17 years, retried on June 30, 2009. The longest serving commissioner in the history of the GLIAC, Brown expanded the conference from 10 full members to 14 full members and two associate members. Also under his leadership, the conference has grown to offering championships in 21 sports while rising to prominence on the national level as GLIAC teams and student-athletes have achieved success both in the classroom and on the fields of play. The Conference expanded on July 1, 2010 when Lake Erie College of Painesville, Ohio, and Ohio Dominican University, located in Columbus, joined the GLIAC. The League will further expand on July, 2012 when Malone University and Walsh University, both located in the Canton, Ohio area, become the 15th and 16th GLIAC members. The policy-making body of the GLIAC is the Management Council, which is comprised of three representatives from each member institution – its director of athletics, faculty athletics representative and senior woman administrator. The presidency of the GLIAC Management Council is rotated alphabetically by school, with Suzanne Sanregret, Director of Athletics at Michigan Technological University, serving as GLIAC President in 2012-13. Dr. Glenn Mroz, President of Michigan Technological University, will serve as the chairperson of the GLIAC Presidents Council this year. The GLIAC made history in 2009 when it hired Dell Robinson as Commissioner. Robinson became the first ethnic minority to serve as D-II commissioner of a non-historically black college or university conference when he began his duties on July 1, 2009. Assisting Robinson are: Penny Cook, Asst. Commissioner for Compliance/SWA, Jeff Ligney, Asst. Commissioner for Media Relations; Mike McCann, Supervisor of Football Officials; Kim Vieira, Supervisor of Soccer Officials; Jeanne Skinner, Supervisor of Volleyball Officials; Rob Doss, Supervisor of Women’s Basketball Officials; Bill Ek, Supervisor of Men’s Basketball Officials; and Rich Fetchiet, Assignor of Baseball Umpires.
