GRAPHIC DESIGN ASSIGNMENT BROAD ARTIST INVESTIGATION In starting this project, I focused my research on typeface artists and designers. With an open mind, I looked in tens of artists, the various typefaces they had designed, their background stories and their sources of inspiration and then picked 5 that spoke to me. These five (5) are spread over quite a large period of time ranging from the Classical to more Modern/Contemporary Typeface/Font Designers Eric Gill Morris Fuller Benton William Addison Dwiggins Frederic W. Goudy Chauncey Griffith SAMPLING Based on Research and Personal preference, I selected the following 3 Artists/Designers William Addison Dwiggins (June 19, 1880–Dec. 25, 1956) Besides Typography, William Addison Dwiggins was also known for his illustration, calligraphy, advertising, book design and his puppet theater, His Linotype typefaces include Metro, Electra, and Caledonia which he designed for Mergenthaler.as well as Eldorado and Falcon which were designed in his later years. Frederic W. Goudy(March 8, 1865 –May 11, 1947) Another classical Typeface designer, Frederic W. Goudy was an American whose typefaces include Copperplate Gothic, Kennerly, and Goudy Old Style. He also designed, in 1938, University of California Oldstyle, for the sole proprietary use of the University of California Press Morris Fuller Benton (November 30, 1872 – June 30, 1948) Known as America’s most prolific type designer, Morris Fuller Benton designed a whopping 221 typefaces of varying styles and function, In addition to being a great artist, he also was abreast of the technology of his day with the invention of the Pantographic Machine which could scale a typeface to a variety of sizes. He created new fonts such as Hobo, Bank Gothic, and Broadway as well as adding new weights to classics like Goudy Old Style and Cheltenham.

FINAL SELECTION I finally choose Morris Fuller Benton due to his versatility and prolific ability. I was particularly impressed and inspired by his less conventional designs such as Hobo, Greeting Monotone and more. TYPEFACE DEVELOPMENT Based on Morris Fuller’s creativity and my personal design, I created my typeface and choose the name Lavender. Lavender is a bold decorative typeface designed for use in more edgy artsy decorative type design ---ROUGH SKETCHING Typeface was sketched on paper with a grid; I then scanned the individual sheets of paper each containing 6 alphabets. The next procedure was isolating each individual alphabet by cropping it in Photoshop; each alphabet was cropped and then saved. --TRANSFORMING TO VECTORS Using Various Adobe Illustrator tools including the Pen and Shape Tools, I then imported each alphabet as a jpeg image and traced over them to create vector versions of each alphabet in my typeface. This is necessary since vectors are mathematical based and can be scaled to any size without losing quality or pixelating .This is clearly very important for Typefaces size they may be used at varying sizes from books all the way to Large Billboards. --CREATING THE ACTUAL TYPEFACE To create a Truetype typeface which can be installed and distributed on any Computer, I used Font Creator. This involved importing the individual vector images created in Illustrator and placing them in the alphabet box, scaling and making other temporary adjustments when necessary. Refining the design to make it a bit more edgy and unique. After which I saved and exported my completed typeface PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL Promotional Material was largely created in Adobe Photoshop. First I drafted the design on Paper before heading to Photoshop to actually create it --TYPEFACE ADVERT Lavender is a flower and also used to refer to the particular shade of purple the flower is. Using that correlation, I designed my cover page with an emphasis on that colour since it share the name.

--DOWNLOADABLE PDF SAMPLE SHEET The downloadable PDF sheet simply demonstrates the use of the font at various sizes showing its crisp edges despite massive size differences. The sheet was created with Adobe Acrobat. --FRONT COVER FOR FONT BUREAU ONE-LINE TYPE SPECIMEN BOOK I researched and looked at existing versions of the specimen book, specifically the “Font Bureau Font Specimen Book 3rd Edition” and the “Font Bureau One-Line Type Specimens” book. Both of which used very simple designs with basic blocks of colour, The “3rd Edition” has a very large number 3 on the right side of the cover written in white while the rest of the cover was a bright red; while the One-Line Type Specimens Book had a predominantly black cover with a red number one also on the left hand side . Having established the simplified style of Font Bureau’s Cover Designs, I decided to maintain this style and after a few revisions decided on a Red cover with the Roman numeral “I” indicating number 1 with reference to the “One-Line”. I then designed the cover and put in the book title,( I was unable to find the exact typeface Font Bureau uses to write their brand name just by looking at it and it wasn’t written anywhere on their website so I had to find something else that was pretty close) --PROMOTIONAL WEB PAGE As explained in the brief, I studied the style of the Font Bureau webpages and went ahead to design mine in Photoshop following the existing rules.
