Winter Proof Your Hands During the colder months it’s easy to forget about our hands when they’re hidden away inside gloves, but the harsh weather and indoor heating can all contribute to dry, chapped skin and cuticles. So to keep your hands and nails at their mid-summer best, follow these simple steps: Cuticle care is a must all year round, but especially during the colder months. Phenomen Oil provides an intense hit of moisture with jojoba, almond and rice oils. Massage into cuticles at night and sleep your way to beautiful skin. Phenomen Oil can also be used on any dry areas such as knees, elbows and lips – a real dry skin saviour! Keep cuticles soft and supple with Nourish. Just a small amount will go a long way. The pure blend of antioxidant vitamins, zinc (to shrink cuticles) and healing agents melt into the skin, leaving it beautifully soft. Keep a small tube in your handbag or at your desk, and massage in throughout the day to stimulate circulation.

OFFER ODYSSEY WINTER DUO

Cheer yourself up this winter with an ELEMIS Power Facial and GELeration on Hands Treatment! For only £50

DIY TREATMENT: Soak a towel in warm water before wringing out. Apply a generous amount of cuticle oil and hand cream before wrapping your hands up to your wrist in cling file, then wrap around the warmed towel. Relax for 10 minutes. The heat from the towel will help to open pores so the products can be absorbed easily. Remove the towel and cling film, then massage in any remaining product. Lack of moisture can cause nails to break so to prevent breakage and to offer extra strength and protection, keep nails covered daily with a base coat. Using the correct base coat will restore the essential balance of moisture and flexibility, and help nails grow long, strong and beautiful. For the ultimate pampering treat, try the Jessica Deluxe Manicure. With heated mittens – which not only feel divine, but help products to penetrate the skin more deeply and to improve circulation – this treatment makes a perfect Christmas gift. To book yours, or to buy a gift card for a loved one, call The Spa on 01438 313320.

www.odysseyspa.com

It is estimated that anywhere between 30% - 80% of the population have lower than adequate levels. Almost every cell in our body has a vitamin D receptor, which gives you some idea of its importance to our overall health. In our part of the world we simply don't get enough sun of a sufficient strength to produce adequate levels of vitamin D. So how else can we help maintain our levels?

Oily Fish

Shock horror, me recommending oily fish. You’ve never heard that before! This time though it has nothing to do with Omega 3 fatty acids. This time it is because oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, herrings etc are very rich sources of Vitamin D. One single wild salmon fillet can deliver up to 2 thirds of our daily requirements. Vitamin D is a fat soluble nutrient remember, so it will be found in these fattier cuts of fish.

Full Fat Dairy Products

For decades we have been sold the idea that the low fat diet was the key to immunity from heart disease and was the quick road to longevity - oh how that one backfired. The low fat model meant that we were encouraged

to abandon full fat dairy products for skimmed and fat free versions. These are some of the richest dietary sources of vitamin D. The fat soluble nutrient is found in the fatty portion of the product. Takeaway the fat, takeaway the vitamin D, alongside the other big fat soluble vitamin - Vitamin A.

Eggs - particularly yolks

Eggs are another rich vitamin D source. Strangely, in the midst of all this low fat fuss, people were told to avoid the yolks of eggs. We were led to believe that it was a bathing pool of cholesterol that would stop our heart flat if we dipped in so much as one soldier!! Thankfully we have moved way way past that but some people still habitually avoid the yolks. If you’ve ever had an egg white omelette you will know how utterly dull it can be! The yolks are where the highest concentration of fat is, and along with it, where all the vitamin D is found.

Fortified Mushrooms

Now, all of the foods that have been listed so far have been animal foods, which presents a big problem to the vegans in the house! But now there is

an ingenious product on the market. Fortified mushrooms! Yes, mushrooms. There are varieties of mushroom, most commonly chestnut, that have been exposed to artificial ultraviolet radiation. Like Humans, mushrooms can synthesise vitamin D upon exposure to UV. By bathing the growing fungus in this radiation, they produce significant levels of vitamin D naturally. Genius!!

Supplements

We truly believe that everyone in the UK should consider a vitamin D supplement. That sounds like a big claim know, but with the massive diversity of actions that vitamin D has and the vital roles it plays in the body, coupled with the levels of inadequate intake to outright deficiency, taking a single supplement may have a profound intake on a lot of peoples health. But how much and what kind! There are literally thousands on the market, with some going up to some insanely high dosages. NHS UK state around 10mcg per day. Some supplements will deliver the dosage in micrograms (mcg), others will deliver it in international units (IU). 10 mcg is equal to 400 iu. This simple one a day strategy may be all you need.

MAKE-UP TIPS How do I choose the best shade of foundation for my skin tone?

The first thing to look at is if you have a red or yellow undertone, this will determine whether you go for a warm (pink tone) or cool (yellow tone) shade of foundation. Always test foundation in natural night and apply a small amount along your jawline. The colour should blend flawlessly into your skin tone, so if the foundation is not visible, you’ve found your perfect match!

How do I stop my eyeshadow from creasing throughout the day? Simple – an eye primer. Not only will this help to keep your eyeshadow in place all day, but it will further enhance the colour too. Apply sparingly using your finger or a concealer brush, blend gently and evenly up to the brow bone.

Want to learn more about make-up? Then come along to our Mii Event!

What is a BB Cream? BB is short for Beauty Balm. Since taking the beauty world by storm just a few short years ago, they have become a makeup bag essential. These multi-tasking creams normally offer some coverage and, depending on the formula, a host of other benefits. Mii’s Skin Loving BB Cream combines a medium coverage, moisturising properties, soya extract to combat signs of ageing, a built in primer, light diffusing particles and SPF45. All in one tube!

How can I make my lipstick last longer? The answer is simple – lip liner! Using a complementary shade for your lipstick will give you a precise finish, intensify the colour and help it to last longer. Then apply 2 coats of lipstick, blotting in between.

DATE: Thursday 1st February TIME: 12pm to 3pm The Odyssey Spa welcomes you to join Mii’s Makeup Artist, Nicola Scruton on the 1st February for an exclusive makeup demonstration and traditional afternoon tea. 5 COLD-WEATHER SKINCARE SECRETS YOU NEED TO KNOW Your skin is likely hidden beneath layers of tights, trousers, jumpers and socks – so what’s the point in taking care of it? Yet think back to summer, when you probably took more care in nurturing your body, and you’ll realise there’s a certain sense of pride and well-being that comes simply from making good choices for yourself. Which is why we’ve put together ELEMIS’ top 5 golden rules for maintaining your body through the winter months. 1. Exfoliate: Whilst in summer, the prospect of baring our limbs jump-starts us into keeping our skin smooth, no sooner do we sink into our tights and skip exfoliation altogether. Fight the urge and keep your skin looking smoother and healthier by gently rubbing ELEMIS’ Lime & Ginger Salt Glow over your limbs to return them to maximum

softness. 2. Release that tension: For moments when you’re feeling cold and weary, ELEMIS’ Aching Muscle Super Soak releases physical tension and imparts a soothing aroma to calm the senses. 3. Hydrate, We knew about scaly shins and crusty elbows. We also knew that our feet spend most of winter looking a paler shade of blue. But it was only recently that we discovered that having dry hips is a common phenomenon. This area is particularly prone to dryness in the winter months as we move between the outside chill to the dehydrating effects of central heating inside. The solution is to hydrate in the morning and just after a bath or shower at night – adding an extra layer to those spots that are most vulnerable in winter. fast-absorbing Frangipani Monoi Body Oil and you can say goodbye to scaly bits. 4. Treat your feet: Yes, you should moisturise them. And yes, popping some socks on after applying ELEMIS’ Treat Your Feet Foot Cream will help keep yours smooth and hydrated. But how about using your feet to reap the benefits of aromatherapy? As well as applying it to our wrists, we recommend to roll a little Life Elixirs Calm Perfume Oil over our feet at night. 5. Get your glow: If we did a straw poll of women who regularly use fake tan during winter, we’re willing to predict that numbers would be low. But whatever your skin tone, there’s something about adding a little bit of extra warmth that makes it look smoother and more supple. Whatever the weather, and you’ll always have a golden glow to be proud of. With KBM Daily Body Boost Tan.

The reality of good nutrition HORMONES AND DIGESTION

L

ike so many women, I used to suffer with severe PMS. I had it for years and it was affecting every aspect of my life, so I decided I would do something about it. I wanted to try and treat mine naturally and it is this that started me on my journey of nutrition. By making changes to my diet and using supplements, I cured myself. Whether you have PMS, are going through the menopause or have one of the many female conditions that we can develop, such as fibroids, polycystic ovary syndrome or endometriosis to name just a few. There are four key things that you can do that are essential to getting your hormones into balance. They are: 1. Keeping your insulin levels low by keeping your blood sugars in check. Watch the sugar! 2. Looking after your liver and it will look after you 3. Keeping cortisol, the stress hormone levels under control. Find something that helps you destress; walking, yoga, reading, meditation or dancing 4. Dealing with any digestive issues that you may have

This may all sound complicated and a bit scientific. Scientific it is, complicated it is not, however, at times it may take willpower and it won’t happen overnight, but if you start making considered changes to what you eat, you will feel better. I am also not a complete bore and do understand that we all like a glass of wine or two, the odd takeaway or even the odd chocolate bar. Don’t deprive yourself of anything, but try sticking to the 80/20 rule; be good 80% of the time and you can’t go too wrong. It really is as simple as watching what you eat and making changes to eating foods that are natural and nutritious. Make sure you don’t over indulge on

refined sugar (or avoid it all together), not putting your liver under undue stress with too much alcohol or eating very rich fatty or fried foods, but eating foods that will support it, such as green leafy veg (broccoli, cabbage, pak choi, kale, chard etc.) Finally think about what happens to you when you eat, if there are changes, you may have some digestive issues. Answer the following questions: 1. Do you feel bloated after certain foods? 2. Do you suffer with regular bouts of constipation and/or diarrhoea? 3. Do you suffer with heartburn, acid reflux or burping after eating? 4. Do you suffer from wind? 5. Do you ever feel sick after taking supplements? 6. Does coffee give you stomach pain? If you have answered yes to at least 2 of the above, you more than likely have some form of digestive issue. This could be caused by the foods that you eat or even how you eat your food; digestion starts in the mouth. Be mindful when you eat and think about what you are eating rather than eating on the run. Sit down to eat and eat food that requires a knife & fork rather than food that can be eaten with your hands and don’t forget to chew your food. You should be chewing your food a minimum of ten times (20-30 for meat) until the food almost becomes liquid. This will help the stomach to start breaking down the food more easily and it will not sit for long periods because it is too big to digest. Identify foods that you react to and try to avoid them for a couple of weeks to see if this makes any difference, then slowly introduce them back. Do not self-diagnose and do not eliminate large food groups, this may lead to nutrient deficiencies. Please see the full article on our website, under our news section. Sugar Industry Suppressed Evidence of Health Risks for 50 years!

T

he sugar industry suppressed evidence for nearly 50 years ago that processed sugars could cause heart disease and some cancers. It suddenly stopped funding the research project that was connecting sucrose to serious health risks, forcing the study to close down. The results of the 1967 study—that had discovered that sucrose increased the chances of heart disease and bladder cancer in laboratory rats—were never published, and the project's funders, the International Sugar Research Foundation (ISRF), sat on the findings. The whole project had been secret, and nobody even knew the ISRF was exploring the possibilities that sucrose might be causing two of the world's major diseases. The study, known as Project 259, had ostensibly been set up to "measure the nutritional effects of the organisms in the intestinal tract". In fact, researchers from the University of Birmingham had been commissioned to discover whether sugar could cause coronary heart disease, and especially when compared to consuming starch.

Two years after the study was closed, an internal document at the ISRF said that Project 259 had been "one of the first demonstrations of a biological difference between sucrose and starch-fed rats." In addition to discovering a link to heart disease, the researchers had also found that sucrose increased the risk of bladder cancer, something the ISRF hadn't suspected. The discovery would have been a vital addition to a growing belief at the time that sugar could raise levels of fats, known as triglycerides, that are linked to heart disease, say researchers from the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF), who discovered the hidden documents recently. Even last year, the sugar industry was still denying there was a link between sucrose and tumour growth, and yet, in truth, they were aware of the possibilities nearly 50 years ago. "The kind of manipulation of research is similar to what the tobacco industry does," said UCSF researcher Cristin Kearns. by Bryan Hubbard WDDTY
