ne of the most important characteristics of Olathe East is our spirit. We are known for being spirited, loud, and state champions. One of the easiest ways to show your spirit is through our school store, The Hawk’s Nest. This store started in the early

2000s and has done nothing but grow since.   The store actually started as a small closet and only sold balloons and candy. The closet began located where it is now and with a school grant that bought the glass, the door, and slat board to make it the official school store. Once the management class developed, they began running the store. They started out selling t-shirts and then slowly expanded with more supplies, more merchandise, and more products.   Four years ago, The Hawk’s Nest introduced The Spirit Box. The Spirit Box is a vending machine located right next to the store where you can get products fast and easy without the store being open!   Keeley O’Grady, the store’s owner and teacher of Marketing Applications, the class that runs the store, came up with the idea of the spirit box when he was in the airport and saw a Best Buy vending machine with headphones, iPods, and more. He thought that it would be really cool with t-shirts and the next school year we had one brought into our school! When we started the spirit box, we were only one out of six schools to have one. One of the cool and unique things about The Spirit Box is that it only takes credit card, making it an easy and fast way to get products.   Another advancement the store has made is the online website. This is an easy way to get products when the store is closed. Paying just $100 a month, the online store helps for customers to gain easy access to spirit wear without even having to leave the comfort of your own house! Our school has is access to local brands like Charlie Hustle and Socks 101 products. These are the KC tank tops, socks, and t-shirts that are so popular right now and the best thing is that you can get them at our very school! The Hawk’s Nest sells them primarily in the lower level, also known as the boutique, so check them out! Along with those brands, Under Armor is another outside vendor the Hawk’s Nest had connections with. We have gotten special permission to design Under Armor products with special art to personalize with hawk spirit! From a small closet selling balloons and candy, to a two level store selling spirit wear, technology accessories, and outside vendor products, it is safe to say that the Hawk’s Nest has come a long way.

he Hawk’s Nest would not be nearly as successful as it is today without the current management and supervision of Keeley O’Grady. For the last fourteen years, the noted “Hawks Nest” has been successfully run by Mr. O’Grady. He is very happy to be a part of this business and would not have it any other way. He loves, “the reality of it all,” meaning that anything can change in just the blink of an eye. He then explained that “there is no book for it,” which means that the tough decisions are his and his students to make because there are no written instructions on how to run business. By the time the class starts, there may have been cancellations in orders or vendors might have decided to reschedule, even the absences of students make a major difference for the store. It is made to look much easier than it truly is. Taking this class and being a part of running the store is the closest thing to an internship most high school students get the opportunity to participate in. This oppertunity teaches students how to interact while in a real job enviroment and what to expect in their later years. Mr. O’Grady also stated that one of his favorite parts of working with The Hawk’s Nest is all of the impressive ideas the students bring to the table to make improvements for the store.   To make the Hawks Nest different than everything else at Olathe East, Mr. O’Grady has incorporated multiple social media platforms. You can find the store on Twitter, Instagram, and even a website! He has made an incredible amount of changes to the store. One major change is the spirit box located outside of the HawkNest. This idea actually came to him while sitting in an airport and seeing a Best Buy vending machine selling technology such as headphones, tablets, and more. He then got to thinking about a vending machine for the store. He wanted a quicker way for students to purchase the smaller accessories from the store and wanted a convenient way to give the students and staff the opportunity to use a credit or debit card. The Spirit Box has been very successful, especially for block days when students forget their ear buds or chargers at home.

Everyone questions what all the money being made is really going toward. An interesting fact is that the money earned from the Hawks Nest merchandise and apparel goes many different places. It sometimes goes right back into the Hawk’s Nest for new clothing because not everything is a winner. Having those few unsuccessful items can begin to get quite expensive. However, they try to make donations about once a month. Something you may not know is that during the holiday season the class does what they can to make a donation to feed some families to make their holidays just as cheerful and bright as the ones we are fortunate toexperience yearly. Not only do the students purchase Olathe East apparel, teachers and staff do as well! The Hawks Nest will be around for many years to come, and O’Grady and his students will continue to keep up the wonderful work!

orking a retail job is extremely hard work. There are many specifics that have to be met while running a business in order to bring in a profit. If these things are not met, the business may struggle to keep their doors open. 2017 seniors, John Moore and David Gutgesell, gave their insight from working in the Hawk’s Nest. When it comes to the things they do on a daily basis in class, students usually spend their time counting money, checking inventory, delivering online orders to students in classrooms, and completing sales made during school hours. Doing this on a daily basis has

taught these specific students how to appeal to customers and handle money. It has also taught them how to work the cash register just like in an actual business. If it wasn’t for this class, they might never work in a retail store or learn how much work is put into running a clothing store.   John’s favorite part about working in the store is the ability to easily gain marketing experience because in the future he wants to assist customers in buying stock. On the other hand, David likes the “real life business” aspect of the class. After a little over two months into this class, it has already prepared them to work in a retail business and

show them how to interact with customers in the future.   Students do a list of things people would not expect them to normally do while working in the store. It is important to keep the store clean so they wash windows, fold clothes, move hangers between the two locations, and make advertisements to sell the products. In making these advertisements, students are required to photograph the merchandise and then design an appealing product to draw in customers. If there was one thing these boys could change, they both agreed they wish the store could have better wide

spread advertising to adults and to the community. This would help to get more people into the store.   Running the school store also gives these students the experience needed to open their own stores someday in the future. Opening a business is a big financial risk, but it would be a great opportunity that could last many generations. Even if students do not want to continue working in retail sales, they have the salesman experience they take away from this class that will serve wherever the future takes them.
