Dear Denim... Find the Perfect Denim for you The Ripped Jean Ripped Jeans can help create faux leg images with the rips. Horizontal rips will make the legs appear wider and Vertical rips will elongate your legs. The style gives any outfit a chic edge when paired with classic pieces.
The Boyfriend Jean The Boyfriend Jean is a relaxed fit creates a laid back style. The jeans are loose around the legs, but tight around the thighs. The style creates the image that the jeans truly came from your “Boyfriend’s Closet”.
The High-Waisted Jean The High-Waisted Jean draws attention to the small part of the waist and it widens the hips. This style of jean is suitable for everyone, and is the perfect jean to pair with a short top or a cropped sweater.
3
The Cropped Jean The Cropped Jean style creates an image of longer and leaner legs. The most important tip when wearing cropped jeans is to make sure the jeans are cropped between the small of the ankle and the mid calf.
The Straight Jean The Stright Skinny Jean fitts snug to your body and balances out your hips. The straight design of the jeans never widens at the calf or ankles, so this style is a good go to jean for an day’s look.
The Black Jean The Black Jean is slimming on any body shape because black creates a straight image. This style can come in handy for a day at work or a night out, the style is versatile. Black Jeans are super fashionable and will never go out of style.

Prostitution is NOT a Choice The Fight of Veronica’s Voice Even in areas of Kansas City prostitution is still on the rise, the continual arrests and sentencing of victims of sex trafficking has lead one organization to step up and make a difference. Veronica’s Voice is a safe house for women coming out of prostitution in one of the most well-known areas for crime, prostitution and drugs in the Kansas City region. This safe haven is an outreach and recovery center that has been serving since July, 2000. For the past 15 years they have worked to not only to empower women to exit from sex trafficking but also de-
current approach to prostitution in the United States which generally treats prostituted persons as criminals. Prostituted women, in addition to facing the constant threat of rape, torture and other forms of violence, live with the fear of being arrested, convicted and sent to prison. Rather than getting help from the authorities, they are more likely to receive prosecution and punishment. Men who buy sex, on the other hand, can often get by with light penalties (if that) and can go back much more easily to their lives. Veronica’s Voice be-
Countless studies report that over 80% of prostitutes say they wish to get out of prostitution. About 40% of prostitutes are former child prostitutes who were illegally forced into the profession through human trafficking or once were teenage runaways. Many of the runaways fled because their homes were abusive, poor, or did not approve of them. There is a nationwide trend of increased frequency of child prostitution as a result of runaways. Many men feel that they are safer from AIDS if they have sex with younger prostitutes, increasing
“A simple thing like having an address is a big deal. It means stability and security for the first time in their lives.” mand an end to prostitution and sex trafficking all together. Magdalene KC is one program being designed as a two-year residential house for women who have survived lives of prostitution, trafficking, addiction, and life on the streets. They will offer housing, food, medical and dental needs, trauma informed therapy, education, and job training without charging the residents. Many prostituted women have spent decades on the streets or peculiarly housed and have never experienced a home. A simple thing like having an address is a big deal. It means stability and security for the first time in their lives. One measure this organization is doing is to change the
lieves that this current approach is unacceptable. Approximately 90% of people arrested for prostitution are those selling sex and 10% are buying it. Prostitution is also one of the most dangerous professions in the country. On lists of the "most dangerous jobs" number one is always fisherman, or logger or oil man. Well... prostitution, by the numbers, is riskier than all of those. According to the most recent statistics, the death rate for prostitutes in the U.S. is 204 out of every 100,000. For fishermen, it's 129 out of every 100,000. At end of the day, being a prostitute is really, really, really dangerous. Also, the average prostitute gets physically attacked approximately once a month.
the market for younger prostitutes. 60% percent of children reported missing as a result of running away become prostitutes for some period of time to survive. These statistics are important because if we stop the demand we stop the supply. The Veronica’s Voice organization is one factor that is helping bringing not only prostitution but human trafficking and rape to an end. It is time we start viewing these women as what they are; victims. Prostitution is not a career choice anyone dreams of being, and many are forced into it. That is why exiting this deadly career is necessary for the safety and happiness of these women. 5

Get Fitter Faster with the Victoria Secret Angels
Who doesnt want to be like a Victoria Secret model? I think if we all had the option to look like they did, the answer would be YES! Looking like a V.S. Angel isn’t impossible; with a few simple exercises, the “Angel body” can be easy! The models want to make sure that they are toned rather than muscular which means that core is very important as a Victoria Secret Angel. Almost all the exercises will somehow engage your core as well as working the targeted area. These exercises will really help you stay slim and toned through high school and college. Tricep dips… (working your triceps) get into a seated position with your arms up onto a taller surface, like a bench. Then, dip your butt up and down while bending your elbows and making sure that your core is also staying tight. Remember to keep breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. Do a single set of 30 seconds and then repeat. Tip: To up the intensity of this exercise (instead of coming back up after you bent your arms) stay with your arms bent and pulse 20 times
Alternating medicine ball push-ups… (working your biceps and triceps) get into a push-up position- making sure you keep your body tight because this will active your core. Put your right hand on the medicine ball and your left hand on the ground. Do 3 push-ups on this side, then switch to the other side with your left hand on the medicine ball and your right hand on the ground doing 3 push-ups. Repeat this exercise twice making it a total of 12 push-ups (6 with your right hand on the ball then 6 with your left hand on the ball). Tip: The closer you put your feet in your push-up position, the harder it will be to balance, and the more your core will be engaged. Reverse lunge…(working your thighs and butt) Reverse lunges are similar to forward lunges but when done correctly, this exercise will engage your core as well because it adds an element of balance. Start standing upright and then take your right leg back into a lunge position then return it to your original standing position. Do this ten times with your right leg then repeat this exercise with your left leg making sure you are keeping your core tucked under, engaging your abs. Do three sets total. Tip: If you want added cardio, try jumping to switch legs instead of standing up then switching
7
Side lunge… (working your outer thighs) Start in a standing position, then move your right leg out to a side lunge and squeeze your core. Then return to your standing position. Do these same steps with your right leg 10 times then repeat to your left leg for 10 reps. Do this set 3 times. Tip: Make sure your knee isn’t going over your foot when you lunge out
Elbow “Push-ups”…(works mainly core but also entire body) Start in an elbow plank position. Starting with your right hand, change your position from an elbow plank to a push-up plank, then repeat with your left hand. Starting with your right hand and finishing with your left, return to elbow push-up position. Do this ten times with your right hand first then switch to begin with your left hand for 10 reps. Do 2 sets. Tip: Make sure the mid-section of your body does not “rock” from side to side, but rather kept firm and strong
Aerobliques… (working your oblique’s and core) Lie down on your right side with your right hand on your left shoulder and left hand on the floor. Use your left hand to lift the upper portion of your body off the ground almost like a side sit-up. Complete 30 of these reps and then switch sides. Tip: To up the intensity of this exercise, pulse when your upper body is completely off the ground, instead of going back down. 8
Developing Your Own Style
o you ever find yourself envious of a stylish fashion blogger whose style effortlessly shines through their pictures? Well now you can be the proud model of an effortless style. By following these five simple steps of style development, you can easily become confident and proud of what you wear. Style is constantly changing, but personal styles always has some personal aspects that always define you as a person.

Single out favorites:
Word cloud:
Count your compliments:
A good way to begin defining your style is to make a list of words that describe you. Then make a list of as many different style genres you can think of—classic, minimal, preppy, bohemian, formal, etc.— and cross off all the obvious words that you know don’t embody your style. With the narrowed down list, next make the word cloud—write what you think your style is now in big font, what you want your style to be in smaller font. Use this list as a guide to begin your fashion exploration.
Inspiration:
Whether you are walking down the street or see something on Pinterest, you should look to other people for style inspiration. Break down the outfit that stands out to you—for example, boyfriend jeans + lace shirt + leather jacket + black booties. Then recreate the look to make it your own by adding jewelry or a different type of jacket. Style inspiration doesn’t always have to come from another outfit; inspiration can come from one of your favorite pieces of art or even the variety of colors in nature.
Go into your closet, examine and pullout the pieces you wear the most. Even if you aren’t happy with your current wardrobe, you are likely to have a few pieces you tend to wear more than others. Ask yourself what you like about the picked items—fabric, color, cut, aesthetic? After you are clear on what you like about your favorite pieces, use then as a starting point of picking out new purchases in the future. Notice what pieces people compliment you on the most, this will help you figure out what styles look best. It gives you an outside opinion besides you looking in the mirror and judging yourself. If you don’t get a compliment on a item you love it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t wear it anymore, just change the way you style it.
Comfort zone:
If you are wanting to develop your own style, you have to be willing to take risks. It is important to experiment with different genre styles until you find the perfect one for you, maybe you even have more than one genre you fit into. As long as you feel confident about what you are wearing, that is the only thing that matters. Get ready to rock the streets because by applying these simple methods to your day-to-day lives you can now rock an effortless and stylish style that you can be proud of. Trends come and go, but your wardrobe will never go out of style, so pick some amazing clothes and strut your 9 style.

What’s in your Kitchen?
he awarness for eating healthy has increased significantly in the past few years and it seems to have gotten a lot more cwomplicated too! A lot of people dont understand why eating healthy is so important and exactly what benefits certain foods have on your body. I totally understand this because it just takes time to learn what healthy foods you like and what foods make your body feel best. I’m going to try and make this topic a little easier by telling you about some of my top 10 favorite healthy foods and not only that, but tell you why they are so good for you! One of my goals is to incorporate at least half of these superfoods into my diet on a daily basis… and you will be able to see why!
1. Apples- How easy is that?? Apples are
my favorite fruit and right now is apple season, so it’s the perfect time to load up on this delicious fruit. Apples are so good for you because they contain antioxidants which fight against free radicals. Free radicals cause undesireable changes in your body like aging and diseases... so apples fight against these changes! 2. Almonds- Almonds have more fiber than any other tree nut and they also provide your body with calicium, iron, and magnesium. They’re best for you if they are kept raw and unsalted. 3. Broccoli- I know that no one’s first choice is broccoli but it should be because it’s packed with fiber, vitamin C, and potassium. There are a few tricks to make broccoli more appetizing. I either eat it with hummus or guac. OR you can roast your broccoli with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper. Then, put it in the oven at 400 degreese for about 35 minutes. That is my favorite way to eat broccoli-its addicting!
4. Blueberries- This superfood is one of
my favorites! Blueberries can go in almost anything like salads, smoothies, or oatmeal. Blueberries also have lots of fiber and antioxidants...not to mention they’re delicious! 5. Salmon- Salmon is my personal favorite fish but any oily fish (such as trout, mackerel, or sardines) works as well. Oily fish is heart healthy and it also provides your body with essiential vitamins like vitamin A and D.
6. Leafy Greens- Greens such as spinach and kale are some of the most nutrient dense foods. These foods provide you with vitamin A, B, C, E, and K. My favorite way to eat these kinds of greens are in a salad or you can even hide them in a smoothie. 7. Sweet Potatoes- If I had to choose my favorite food out of all these, it would definitely be sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes taste like candy while still proving your body with fiber, vitamin C, and complex carbohydrates (which are actually good for you because of their energy source). My favorite way to eat them is to dice them and add olive oil, salt, pepper, and dried rosemary. Then all you havce to do is roast them for about 40 minutes in the oven at 400 degrees… SO GOOD! 8. Avocados- Many people think avocados aren’t healthy because of their high fat content, but in reality, our body needs healthy fats (like the monosaturated kind found in avocados and almonds). 9. Oatmeal- Oatmeal is a very heart healthy food and contains a lot of fiber. Oats also contain complex carbohydrates which stabilizes your levels of blood-glucose so your blood sugar won’t spike. The best kind of oatmeal is the steel cut oats, rather than instant oatmeal. 10. Flaxseeds- Flaxseeds are high in fiber, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids. They also lower the risk of cancer and diabetes. Flaxseeds are best ground, then added to greek yogurt or smoothies... you can’t even tell they’re there!

The Feminism Movement Feminism has been a prominent movement and enduring battle for gender equality for women in society. The fight has carried on for nearly a century, and an end can’t be foreseen in the near future. The Fight surrounds issues such as Reproductive Rights, Abortion, Domestic Violence, Maternity Leave, Equal Pay, Women’s Suffrage, and Sexual Violence in society, but the fight also extends to defend the ones who refer to themselves as a Feminist. Feminist doesn’t have a negative connotation; although, society makes it out to be a negative label for female figures. The Feminist Movement today is carried on by well-known female figures in social media, political positions, and famed actresses and performers. The history of Feminism is broken into three separate waves of active effort and change. Each wave was affected by the previous wave and each wave has a unique variety of causes that were addressed during the time period.
ened their focus once again. The 2nd Wave was not all negative; The Wave resulted in Custody and Divorce Laws to be altered for the better, Battered Women’s Shelters sprung up, and the Equal Rights Amendment was passed; yet the problem still was not fixed.
First Wave Feminism first surfaced during the 19th and 20th centuries in the U.K., United States, Canada, and the Netherlands. At this time, the feminist fought for what was named “Legal Issues” such as voting rights, property rights, and gender equality. History books define their purpose as fighting for women suffrage which became the umbrella term for the Feminism Movement at the time. 2nd Wave Feminism The 1960s approached and the Second Wave of Feminism was launched. The Second Wave primarily became more diverse in its issues, but also it spread quickly to countries in Europe like Israel and Turkey. The 2nd Wave Feminists widened the debate of the subject matter to include Women’s Sexuality, Workplace Issues, Reproductive Rights, and Domestic Violence. During this era, women started working in large corporations, the military, the media, and became involved in sports. Along with this success, the violence and inequality against women skyrocketed. Due to the women’s movement in everyday professions, stories of rape and domestic violence came to light; therefore, the 2nd Wave Feminists broad-
The Third Wave of Feminism originated in the 1990s and is still ongoing today. The Third Wave came to light because there was an enormous amount of backlash from the effects of the Second Wave of Feminism. And so, the Movement continues. The Feminists in the Third Wave became a group of a variety of women from a multitude of cultures. The main aspects of the 3rd Wave was focusing on “The Queer Theory”, which was a theory in the 1990s that focused on the different sexualities of women. Additionally, the Feminists concentrated on abolishing Gender Role Expectations, degrading stereotypes that were associated with women, and changing the media and language portrayals of women. In this Wave, social media and celebrities have become a large part of the Feminism Movement. w Starting in the 1930s, Hollywood Actress, Marlene Dietrich, intentionally wore trousers and men’s suits throughout her career in order to make a statement that women do not have to wear stereotypical clothing deemed as “feminine”. Wearing anything that was not a dress or a skirt in the 30s was branded as being extremely scandalous and rebellious. A true feminist, Marlene Dietrich, did not

succumb to the media, but continuously pushed the envelope. Little Miss Hermione Granger; the adorable Harry Potter girl with crazy wild hair is not so little anymore. Emma Watson quickly rose in the Feminism Movement when she became the Goodwill Ambassador at United Nations. Here, Emma Watson created the HeForShe Campaign, a gender equality movement to bring one half of humanity in support of the other half of humanity to unite both sides. Watson gave a miraculous speech referencing that “Women are hated on for calling themselves a Feminist”; however, “the word merely stands for the fight for gender equality.” Watson has led the campaign under the United Nations Women Organization. Watson said it best when she stated “If you stand for equality then you’re a feminist.” If you’re a loyal, devoted member of the Bey Hive, as all should be, then no one has to tell you that Beyonce is one powerful feminist in today’s society and mass media. Beyonce, over the years, has become a figure for female empowerment, even displaying the word FEMINIST behind her during her concerts. Queen Bey knows it best when she declared that gender equality “is very simple…it’s just a person that believes in equality for men and women.” If you weren’t a Feminist before, You Should be now! 15

Dear Abby,
Dear Abby,
I always buy cute pieces at the mall but when I get home I never know how to style them together to make it look cute! How do I know how to pair the perfect outfit? From, EZ Dear EZ, Finding the prefect outfit can be a tricky thing, but the key is to know the look you’re going for and roll with it. A good way to get ideas if you have a certain piece you’re dying to wear is to simply google “article of clothing” then add “outfits”, so if you had a cute military vest and didn’t know what to pair it with you could simply search, “military vest outfit” and look through the images for inspo! When you find a style you like go ahead and look for similar items in your own closet that resemble those in the pic. Next thing you know, you’ve got a magazine worthy outfit for the next day!
I was always taught that black and brown wasn’t allowed in fashion, but now I’ve seen it come into style. How do I know when to pair these 2 colors? From, AP Dear AP, The brown and black combo can be very confusing on knowing when to use and when to decide against it. Personally, I am a fan of mixing these colors. Mostly in rustic style outfits, pairing a weathered looking pair of brown boots with a ripped pair of blacked jeans and a brown belt (same color of shoes though!) is a great look. Now, when wanting to pair a chocolate brown tee with black leggings... I would pass on that one. Brown and Black work best together when paired with accessories as well.
Dear Abby,
I have an important holiday dinner with my boyfriend’s family and don’t know whether to go more casual or fancy… what should I wear to this occasion?? I want to make a good impression without looking too over or under dressed! From, EH Dear EH, Situations where you don’t know how to coordinate the fanciness are always tough. I find that more casual than fancy is always comforting. For a holiday dinner I’d try and style it up with a cute leather jacket, vest or wrap with a cute scarf or necklace paired with heeled boots, and keep it sim17 ple and classy with black pants.
I’m just beginning to get into clothes and trying to dress in a fashionable way. What is the number one worst styling mistake to avoid? From, SS Dear SS, In my opinion, the one for sure way to bring down any outfit is by over doing it. Whether it be by showing off too much skin or adding too much skin. Everything needs to be done in moderation, no matter the occasion.
Dear Abby,

“Winterfied” One of my absolute favorite times of year is winter. I love the snowy nights, holiday seasons, and warm winter clothes. But the thing that I really do not like is how the weather treats your skin. I already have very dry skin and when you pile a season of cold weather on top of that, it never turns out well. Your skin is the largest organ in your body which is why it’s so important to take care of. My face and hands are always the driest part of my body, so I am going to give you a few of my favorite scrubs that take that dry skin right away and leave your hands and face feeling just like silk!
Honey Lip Scrub… the only thing worse than
cracked and dry hands is cracked and dry lips, which is why I use this honey lip scrub at least once a week! All you have to do is add 1 tbsp of honey, 1 tbsp of sugar, and 1 tsp of Vaseline to a bowl, mix those ingredients up and apply the mixture to your lips. Then, wash the mixture off your lips and pat dry with a towel to remove any excess dry skin. Finish with your favorite chap stick (I like Burt’s Bee’s) and there you have your smooth, crack-free lips!
Lemon Sugar Hand Scrub… this is one of the
essential hand scrubs for the winter and its super easy because these are ingredients that most everyone will have handy in their kitchen. Take about ½ cup of sugar (depending on how much you want to make) and add it to a bowl with ¼ of coconut oil or olive oil. Then, squeeze in the juice of 1 lemon. Mix all these ingredients together until the consistency is smooth.
Peppermint Body Butter…. this lotion is my
absolute favorite to use because it smells so good and it makes for a super moisturizing winter skin treat. Melt 6 oz. of coconut oil (I get mine from Trader Joe’s) and 2 oz. of cocoa butter. Then, refrigerator the oils until they appear to be clear-looking. The last thing you need is peppermint essential oil- you can use any scent that you want but peppermint is my personal favorite (especially for winter time). The last step is to just add the peppermint oil in the coconut oil and cocoa butter mixture until it becomes smooth and creamy. That’s it!

The Beauty Expert
I got the chance to sit down with the hottest upin-coming makeup artist, Makenzi Utter. Makenzi took the time to fill me in on her favorite beauty products, her daily makeup routine, her dream career, and some awesome tips for makeup beginners. Q: How did you get into Makeup? M: Makeup is just an awesome thing! It started when i was super little, my mom used to do my makeup for fun when I liked to dress up, or when we went to dinners or some events. The one thing I remember is that I absolutely loved the smell of it, that’s weird, but it smells so good. As I got older, I started to watch YouTube videos for makeup techniques and different styles and I would try them and after that I became totally obsessed. Once I got good at it, I liked that it’s super pretty and makes you feel super pretty! Q: Ultimately, how has makeup affected your self-image? M: Makeup has definitely made me more confident in myself, not in a negative way, but I love the way I feel with it! I don’t feel like people, myself included, that you always have to wear makeup. I don’t think people should live feeling like they can’t leave the house without it, but it is an awesome “accessory”. One thing I love that shows that you don’t always have to have makeup on is in YouTube videos, makeup tutorials always start fresh-faced then start applying makeup to give that before and after affect. Q: What are some projects you are involved in at the moment? M: Right now, I just do anyone’s
makeup who wants it done, so that I can practice different styles and techniques. I do makeup for weddings, dances, and mostly photo shoots. Recently, I got the chance to help out with makeup at this year’s Kansas City Fashion Week which was a super good experience for me. Q: What is your dream beauty career? M: My dream is to do either Celebrity makeup or do Runway Makeup at New York Fashion Week because it’s always unique and individualized, so I would love to be able to do really creative and out-there looks. Other than that, I also would love to work with Urban Decay because it’s definitely my favorite cosmetics brand. Q: Now for some beauty tips that everyone wants to know, how do you contour your face? M: Different face shapes for sure have different face contours; however; for my face I apply a darker shade than my skin tone in the hollows of my cheeks, around my temples, along my jawline, and on the sides of my nose in order to make it appear slimmer. Then, I highlight my cheekbones, the middle of my forehead, and the bridge of my nose. Then blend it all super well.
Q: How often do you wash your brushes, and why? M: I definitely do not wash mine enough. You should do it every week or about every week and a half with brush cleaner or baby shampoo; I use a brush cleaner from a medical day spa. The brushes for sure need to be washed to prevent bacteria and buildup, and also if you wash your brushes often they last longer. Q: What should I use to keep my makeup on longer? M: I use Nix Photo Loving Primer to keep my makeup on all day. The primer eliminates pores and mattes your face to keep the foundation intact. Another option is to use a primer spray after you apply your makeup to matte and set the makeup. For my eyes to avoid creases, I use an eye shadow primer from Urban Decay. Q: What are three products you could never live without and why? M: This is easy: Urban Decay Eye shadow Primer, Bare Minerals Original Foundation, and Anastacia Dip Brow Pomade. Thanks to Makenzi Utter for taking the time to sit down with us and answer some awesome make-up questions. No matter the type of skin or face shape you might have, Makenzi’s tips can be applied or adjusted to fit your everyday make-up routine. 22

ith every season comes new styles and the fresh desire to have the latest trendy looks, but getting a new wardrobe 4 times a year to keep up with the ever changing flairs of fashion doesn’t help your wallet stay the size you need it to… But there are so many secrets to shopping often and cheap that you’ll be turning heads and being asked, “where did you get that!?” so many times you won’t be able to keep track. And the best part is, you won’t have to decide between spending your latest paycheck on a new outfit or a night out with friends, you can have both! The first step is to go in with a plan. A big reason we end up spending so much while shopping is that we don’t have an idea of what we are looking for, so when we go into a store and the put up the cutest (and most expensive) items up front to trick people like you into grabbing them without taking the time to decipher the rest of the store. If you go in with a plan of what you’re looking for you’ll skip the tricky displays and get what you really need. Next is to know where and when to look for what you need. Stores are always having sales and that is usually the best time to grab what you’re looking for from specific stores. This is a good time to get those reliable jeans from Hollister or a good bra from Victoria Secret. To find out when these sales are you can be on
an email list, look online or in magazines, but the best way is to just ask the workers when the next big sale is! Plan ahead and grab all the knocked off priced items at end of year sales as well, you can always store away the summer shorts that you buy in October until next year and those winter sweaters that will always be in style so you don’t have to worry about having to resell them when they aren’t the trend anymore. You also don’t have to run straight to Urban or even Nordstrom’s for a stylish wellmade outfit, stores like forever 21, charlotte rouse, and Marshalls are always accountable for having a variety of inexpensive clothing. Another big shopping tip is to not be afraid of second hand shopping, big names are always available at consignment shops like Plato’s Closet or Ditto. They offer in-style gently used clothing at a portion of the original cost. This is a great place to grab outfits you might just be wearing for one night or other things that are trending right now but may not last, you can wear them enough to get what you paid for and not feel bad when you toss it! And with the ever increasing vintage styles coming back, thrift stores are always dependable to have those over sized flannels or classic men’s sweaters. And if you are in need of cheesy or simple T-shirts and sweatshirts there is always a good find there for $0.99! 24
