Coco Chanel, byname of Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel was born August 19, 1883 in Saumur, France and passed away January 10, 1971 in Paris. Chanel was born into poverty and worked for a few years as a café singer to bring in some income. She later became associated with a few wealthy men she met and in 1913, with financial assistance from one of them, Arthur (“Boy”) Capel, she opened a tiny millinery shop in Deauville, France, where she sold simple sportswear, such as jersey sweaters. It took her 5 years to make a name for herself and designs that stressed simplicity and comfort and were revolutionizing the fashion industry. By the late 1920s the Chanel industries were worth millions and employed more than 2,000 people, not only in her couture house but also in a perfume laboratory, a textile mill, and a jewelry workshop. Chanel is most famous for her woman’s suit, the quilted purse, costume jewelry, and the “little black dress.” Also her, phenomenally successful perfume Chanel No. 5. In 10 years she was one of the world’s biggest designers. A famous quote said by her... “A woman is closest to being naked when she is well dressed.”
