Hello readers, What’s new? Well, for starters, I am! As the new editor of OEM Off-Highway, I’m eager to get to know more about the ins and outs of the manufacturing industry and the ways in which its product development teams are serving end users.

For the last nine years, I served construction contractors as the editor of Construction Business Owner Magazine & Digital Media. During that time, I dove deep into both business management and global construction industry trends to help my former audience run companies built to succeed. In this role, I had the opportunity to form relationships with major OEMs, identify emerging trends and share industry insights with readers.

In my new role today, I aim to serve the OEM Off-Highway audience in similar ways. Now is an exciting time in the equipment manufacturing industry, with a new wave of innovative trends and technologies coming to market from the fields of product development and engineering. US & EUROPEAN LEADING INDICATORS INCREASING BUT LIKELY TO TREND DOWN IN THE FUTURE

As analysis moves forward, some indicators continue to rise when slowing growth or contraction is expected. The big four European Nations and U.S. leading indicators are both growing, but the War in Ukraine and rising interest rates may mean a decline may be imminent. In addition, while supply chain problems

have improved, demand is softening, which may decrease U.S. industrial production. New U.S. farm machinery shipments were down 6.1% below the year-ago level. Contraction will likely continue because imports may be taking market share given the current strength of the U.S. dollar.

US Leading Indicator

• The U.S. OECD leading indicator monthly rate-ofchange moved higher in April.

• Should the November 2022 rate-of-change low hold, it would suggest upward pressure on the U.S. economy this year. However, our analysis suggests sustained cyclical rise is unlikely to occur this year. Slowing growth or contraction is more probable.

US Private Nonresidential New Construction US Industrial Production

• U.S. industrial production in the three months through April was 0.5% above the same three months one year ago.

• Supply chain constraints have eased significantly, but demand appears to be simultaneously softening; this may limit Production growth, resulting in either flatness or decline in the coming quarters.

• U.S. private nonresidential construction in the first quarter of 2023 totaled $142.2 billion, up 20.7% from the first quarter of 2022.

• Higher interest rates are likely to impact new construction projects. However, given this sector’s extended lag time relative to the macroeconomy, the impact may manifest in the coming years rather than in the near term.

US Total Public New Construction

• U.S. total public construction in the 12 months through March was 8.7% above the year-ago level.

• As federal infrastructure spending is disbursed, public construction is likely to continue to benefit.

US Farm Machinery Production Europe Ag & Forestry Machinery Production

• U.S. farm machinery and equipment shipments in the 12 months through March were 6.1% below the year-ago level.

• Contraction in shipments is likely to persist in at least the near term. Imports may be taking market share from domestic shipments given the current strength of the U.S. dollar.

• European agricultural and forestry machinery production in the 12 months through March came in 9.8% above the year-ago level.

• The E.U. adopted a new agricultural policy plan in 2023 with an enhanced focus on environmentand climate-friendly projects, which may impact demand for machinery.

Europe Leading Indicator

• The four big European nations leading indicator monthly rate-of-change has continued to move higher. Thus far, the rise has been relatively moderate.

• Elevated geopolitical tensions and economic factors, such as elevated interest rates, remain a risk to European growth prospects.

US HeavyDuty Truck Production US Mining Production Germany Industrial Production

• U.S. heavy-duty truck production in the 12 months through April was 15.3% above the year-ago level.

• As the macroeconomy declines next year, fewer trucks will be needed to move goods, putting downward pressure on production.

• U.S. mining production in the 12 months through April came in 6.9% above the year-ago level.

• The largest sector of U.S. mining is oil and gas extraction, which is benefitting because of global energy uncertainty. Smaller components such as gravel, sand and stone mining are suffering from diminished demand from the residential construction sector.

• Germany industrial production in the first quarter was 1.5% above the first quarter of 2022.

• Zooming out, production has largely plateaued since the latter half of 2021. Production remains below pre-pandemic levels.

US Construction Machinery, New Orders

• U.S. construction machinery new orders in the 12 months through March were 12.5% above the year-ago level.

• Despite recent upticks in the new orders annual growth rate, our analysis suggests that a general rate-of-change decline is ahead given interest rate and residential construction market trends.

NUS Mining & Oil Field Machinery Production Index

• U.S. construction machinery new orders in the 12 months through March were 12.5% above the year-ago level.

• Despite recent upticks in the new orders annual growth rate, our analysis suggests that a general rate-of-change decline is ahead given interest rate and residential construction market trends.

US Defense Industry, New Orders

• Annual U.S. defense capital goods new orders in March were 10.4% above the year-ago level.

• Increased defense spending across the globe, particularly in countries to which the U.S. exports defense goods, bodes well for new orders in the coming quarters.

Building on the JD14 engine design from John Deere, the JD18 engine was engineered with flexibility, serviceability and durability in mind. The JD18 extends the rated power range, now 522 kW to 676 kW (700 hp to 907 hp).  Jake Brake Improves Engine & Fuel Consumption

Jacobs Vehicle Systems, a manufacturer of engine retarding and valve actuation systems for the commercial vehicle industry, upgraded the company’s engine brake on model-year 2021 PACCAR MX-11 heavy-duty diesel engines.  Crawler Excavators Powered by Stage V Engines

FPT Industrial announced its new E-Series crawler excavators from CASE Construction Equipment to be powered by the FPT’s Stage V NEF engines.

CASE now presents the E-Series crawler excavators. The excavators include 13-metric-ton to 30-metric-ton models: CX130E, CX160E, CX180E, CX210E, CX240E, CX250E and CX300E. The models offer greater controllability, reliability, operator comfort, efficiency, productivity and lower total cost of ownership.

With the E-Series CASE completes its Stage V offering. The new E-Series incorporates Stage V engines, which offer greater displacement, while meeting stringent emissions requirements. The 13 metric ton to 18-metric ton models feature the N45, the 4.5-L engine from the NEF series, while the N67 (6.7-L, 6-cylinder version from the same engine family) powers the 21-metric-ton to 30-metricton models. The NEF engines powering the new CASE E-Series include EGR-free architecture, while the FPT-patented HI-

High-capacity filters with clogging sensor deliver service intervals of up to 1,000 hours, an improvement over previous solutions. With the NEF engines powering this new range of excavators, more CASE Construction vehicles are being supplied with FPT engines. To allow the use of renewable fuels, NEF Stage V engines fitted on all E-Series models are compatible with EN15940-compliant fuels, such as hydrotreated vegetable oils.

Since 2001, more than 2 million FPT engines have been manufactured for a wide range of applications: construction equipment, agriculture, on-road, marine, and power generation. FPT Industrial’s offering for the earthmoving sector features engine families with power outputs ranging from 40 kW to 670 kW, and displacements of 2.8 L to 20 L.  New Inline Engine Platform

The enhanced gas exchange system, reduced internal friction, and increased turbocharger efficiency have a positive impact on the fuel-efficiency. For the 13-L engine from Scania, this means up to 7% improvement in fuel consumption compared to the current generation at the same power output. That translates to 4 liters of diesel saved per engine hour at full load. The platform carries the performance and reliability that customers are used to from Scania, but with added carbondioxide-emission reductions.

The 13-L engine has a power range of 368 kW to 450 kW and delivers up to 11% more power and 21% more torque than the current generation. The 11-L engine has a power range of 202 kW to 368 kW.

 Marine Tier 4 Engine

Mitsubishi Marine Engine announced the 12R-Y4MPTAW-3 engine. It is fully mechanical, which eliminates many of the reliability and maintenance concerns with electronically controlled engines. Individual heads, access ports for crankshaft bearings and other practical features allow many repairs to be made with standard tools and without lifting the engine or dropping the pan.

 Electric Thermal Management Solutions

Eberspaecher announced that it will present solutions for thermal management with a focus on electrical machinery during CONEXPO 2023. The products are designed for battery-powered construction vehicles and machines.

Eberspaecher developed Xellstor energy management systems for managing power supplies. Using the Eberspaecher e-connected app, individuals can monitor battery status in real time. This feature supports the demands of fleet management and operational readiness. Designed for situations when electricity is needed for mobile applications or environmental regulations prohibit fuel-operated power generators, the Xellstor portfolio offers solutions for an autonomous power supply.

 Single-Cylinder Engine

The Vanguard 400 EFI/ETC horizontal shaft commercial gasoline engine has and electronic fuel injection (EFI) system that provides better fuel efficiency, improved overall performance and quick load acceptance. The engine also offers easy, all-weather choke-less starting. The addition of the electronic throttle control (ETC) system means operators can count on smooth and consistent power with any load size or terrain type.

 Hydrogen Direct Injection System

Liebherr developed injection systems for hydrogen (H2) combustion engines used in on- and off-highway applications. Resistance against dust, dirt, vibrations, and other harsh environmental conditions are a few of the key requirements. Peak power and dynamic load changes are among the other challenges for H2combustion engines.

Coming close to the diesel engine in terms of performance and drivability, in all applications, is one of the biggest challenges. Liebherr’s system-oriented approach to hydrogen injection combines components to control pressure and flow. This enables the same driving characteristics as a diesel, while maintaining a sturdy system design.

Volvo Penta expanded its genset range and launched the D17. The new power generation engine delivers a strong power-

to-weight ratio from the same footprint as the compact D16. The fuel-efficient, 17-liter Volvo Penta TWD1744GE industrial genset engine will help support the current demands of industrial customers and their future business needs.

Looking ahead, the D17, together with the rest of the power generation line-up, will evolve to enable customers to transition to lower emissions using alternative fuels. The D17 offers up to 5% less fuel consumption per kWh than

its lower-displacement D16 sibling. This is largely the result of recent evolutions in combustion technology such as the modernization of the fuel-injection system with a common-rail design. An important new feature, which will also be made available to D16 models, is the option of a viscous fan to further reduce fuel consumption and noise emissions.

 A 25-Horsepower Heavy-Fueled Rotary Engine in a Basketball-Sized Package

LiquidPiston, a manufacturer of compact and efficient engine technology and hybrid power systems, announced the company’s intent to commercialize the XTS-210, a 25-horsepower, two-stroke, supercharged, liquid-cooled, 210-cc rotary engine.

Compared to current diesel piston engines, the XTS-210 design reduces size and weight by nearly 80% while maintaining comparable power output. This announcement builds upon a $9 million development contract from the U.S. Army to develop a prototype core engine based on the XTS-210 design for military applications.

 Small Footprint Diesel Engine

Caterpillar announced the development of the Cat C13D, a new 13-liter diesel engine platform, designed to achieve improved power density, torque and fuel efficiency for optimizing the performance of heavy-duty off-highway applications. Engineered for reliability and productivity, the inline, six-cylinder Cat C13D engine platform will offer eight power ratings from 456 horsepower (hp) to 690 hp—340 kilowatts (kW) to 515 kW with up to 3,200 Newton meter of peak torque.

Engine-mounted aftertreatment and cooling packs will be available from the factory to reduce installation and validation costs. The C13D will meet the emissions standards of higher regulated markets, such as EU Stage V, U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final, China Non-road IV, Korea Stage V, and Japan 2014, with models available for lesser regulated markets.

 New 3.8-Liter Hydrogen Engine

Kubota announced its 3.8-liter hydrogen engine during CONEXPO-CON/AGG. Similar to gasoline engines, the 3.8-liter hydrogen engine offers spark ignition while providing 85 kilowatts, which is also the power required for a 45-kilovolt-amp generator. Specifications of the engine include 3.8 liter and 4 cylinders for multiple applications, making it a great alternative fuel solution.

Kubota introduced the D1803 P1 Hybrid engine as an additional hybrid solution. This engine is compact and robust with an integrated motor generator embedded within the flywheel housing. With the P1 Hybrid engine, the motor only assists for the brief periods in which high output is required.  48-Volt Aftertreatment Heater Controller

Power management company Eaton introduced a 48-volt programmable power electronics control unit. This equipment is for electrically heated catalysts that can be used by commercial vehicle manufacturers to meet tightening global emissions regulations. The control unit quickly warms up the exhaust aftertreatment catalyst and keeps it warm during low-engine-load operation.

This controller is designed to:

• Receive power commands from the aftertreatment system

• Provide soft-start and soft-stop capabilities for assisting in maintaining system voltage control

Volvo Trucks unveiled a completely new, fully electric rear axle, a milestone in the company’s push toward electrification. Freeing up space for more batteries, the new e-axle means even longer range for Volvo’s battery electric trucks.

The new e-axle allows even more batteries on the truck by integrating the electric motors and the transmission into the rear axle. More batteries mean longer range, which creates opportunities for long distance transports to also be electrified. On fuel cell electric trucks, that will be introduced in the second half of this decade, the additional space comes in handy for installing other components.

Developed as a highly integrated electric drive, CeTrax lite provides advantages for manufacturers, particularly supporting emissionlast-mile deliveries. The technology has already received orders from Asia and the Americas. The suspension’s equalizing beam distributes the load equally between both axles in off-road and uneven terrain conditions and provides 17 inches of diagonal articulation. An integrated jounce stop provides overload protection to maximize the life of the progressive load springs and bolster springs. The tire clearance was increased on the HAULMAAX EX to include packages with 315 tires and 9-inch steel wheels, while continuing to meet the SAE standard for tire chain clearance.

Michelin North America, Inc. has launched the Michelin X Mine D2 Extra Load L5 35/65R33 tire, an improved version of one of its most popular mining tires. The new tire, developed to perform in quarry and underground mining applications, withstands the most aggressive mining environments and has the capacity to carry heavier loads.

In harsh mining environments, tires are often removed before their maximum life cycle because of damage. The Michelin X Mine D2 Extra Load tire uses new plies in the sidewall that keep sidewall injuries from spreading and prevent rock cuts from penetrating the sidewall.  New Automated Transmissions

Kenworth announced that the new PACCAR TX-18 and PACCAR TX-18 Pro automated transmissions for Class-8, heavy on-highway and select off-highway vocational applications are now available. Both 18-speed transmissions build upon the efficiency of the PACCAR TX-12.

The PACCAR TX-18 offers additional capability for heavy on-highway use for applications, such as heavy-haul transport. The PACCAR TX-18 Pro adds enhanced capabilities and unique features for extreme-duty vocational and other select off-highway applications. The new TX-18 and TX-18 Pro transmissions support maximums of 510 horsepower, 1,850 pound-feet of torque capacity and 140,000 pounds of gross combination vehicle weight.

The transmissions are equipped with an internal oil temperature sensor. The sensor shows transmission temperatures on the in-cab, 15-inch digital display. It also provides driver notifications in situations causing excessive temperatures.

The TX-18 and TX-18 Pro are standard with Kenworth’s columnmounted, right-hand shifter. The shifter places gear selection and engine brake controls at the driver’s fingertips for enhanced ergonomics, comfort and overall performance.

Omni Powertrain Technologies released its new electrohydraulic pump combination. The unit was developed for low voltage mobile applications and is well-suited for the needs of hybrid equipment builders facing spatial constraints.

The system includes a Flo-Torq gear pump packaged with an axial flux motor and controller from Omni’s Magelec subsidiary. The overall package length of 299.7 millimeters (11.8 inches) offers equipment designers a compact form to power electrohydraulic traction and auxiliary functions.

This two-wire braided hose offers reliability and extended service life, reducing maintenance time, costs and waste. EC881 hose has a 35% higher pressure rating, 26% higher operating temperature, eight times more abrasion resistance, 67% greater flexibility (⅓ SAE bend radius), and five times more impulse life than standard EN 857 type 2SC hoses.

With its high-pressure capabilities, EC881 hose can replace heavy, rigid four-wire spiral hose in certain applications. Braided hose is more flexible than spiral hose, which may enable OEMs to reroute and reduce hose assembly lengths, contributing to further cost savings.

CrossControl offers the CCpilot V1000 and CCpilot V1200 for construction, agricultural and industrial machines. The displays are compact and can be used to monitor operations. Kenworth announced that the new PACCAR TX-18 and PACCAR TX-18 Pro automated transmissions for Class-8, heavy on-highway and select off-highway vocational applications are now available for order. Both 18-speed transmissions build upon the efficiency of the PACCAR TX-12. The PACCAR TX-18 offers additional capability for heavy on-highway use for applications, such as heavy-haul transport.

The PACCAR TX-18 Pro adds enhanced capabilities and unique features for extremeduty vocational and other select off-highway applications. The new TX-18 and TX-18 Pro transmissions support maximums of 510 horsepower, 1,850 pound-feet of torque capacity and 140,000 pounds of gross combination vehicle weight.

The transmissions are equipped with an internal oil temperature sensor. The sensor shows transmission temperatures on the in-cab, 15-inch digital display. It also provides driver notifications in situations causing excessive temperatures.

 T4 Electric Power Tractor

CNH Industrial revealed the New Holland T4 Electric Power—the industry’s first all-electric light utility tractor prototype with autonomous features—at its Tech Day in Phoenix, Arizona.

A concentrated effort between the CNH Industrial team of experts in the U.S. (Burr Ridge, Detroit) and Italy (Modena) was able to halve this prototype’s development time, including a collaboration with the company’s strategic partner Monarch Tractor—an electrified Ag manufacturer based in California. This product is the latest development in CNH Industrial’s strategic plan for electrification. The prototype presented is branded New Holland Agriculture, while the commercial model will also extend to the Case IH Brand.

Get a machine with so much play in it too close to the edge of a berm, and this is bound to happen. The bowls have found a stable position, with only the lead TS-14 fully on level ground. The gentlemen at the No. 4 bowl are Euclid engineers: Left to right, Ray Trumphour, Terry Cunningham and Bill Walker. They’re working on the hydraulic lines in the gooseneck – something not normally done from ground level!

MULTIPLE SCRAPERS, ONE OPERATOR

In our ongoing study of scraper technology, we last looked at the concept of lashing up multiple scrapers under the control of a single operator, primarily by adding one or more scraper bowls to the one being operated. But the concept didn’t end there.

During excavation of the San Luis Canal in California’s San Joaquin Valley in the mid-1960s, the combination of suitable material, (hoped-for) economics and work areas that were, at least in theory, spacious enough to allow room to maneuver gave rise to three variations on an even wilder idea—multiple motor scrapers, tractors and all, controlled from one machine. As it turned out, there was a right way and two wrong ways to do this.

The Wrong Way

Euclid’s two-bowl, three-engine Tandem TS14 was mentioned in the last issue.

One wrong way was lashing two of these together into a 135-foot-long green snake on wheels with six powered axles and five pivot points—two for each Tandem TS-14 plus the fifth at the pivot between them.

The operator controlled it from the lead tractor. All this caused it to writhe as it moved, with 10 to 15 feet of side play

at the rear scraper, and the idea came to an end when all this play caused a tire on the last scraper to go over the edge of the berm and slowly pull most of the rest of the machine over with it.

A Wrong Way & the Right Way

The other wrong way, and the right way, involved Caterpillar 657s. Two tandem sets and one 186-foot-long triple set were assembled by dealer Peterson Tractor Company.

The triple set, like that tandem Tandem TS-14, was hard to manage. Even with the operator in an elevated cockpit above the lead scraper’s engine for visibility, it was also like driving a snake, and finally doomed itself by bogging down in soft going.

The tandem 657s, which were controlled from the lead tractor, proved much more practical, and purchase of a single 657 led to the triple being split into two doubles. Peterson was awarded patents in 1966 for the tandem 657’s steering and operating controls and 1967 for the triple’s accelerator system. When Cat wanted to revisit the idea of tandem scrapers through the ability to temporarily hitch two machines together for mutually assisted loading, it called on Peterson’s experience with these machines.

The Results

The result was another patent issued in September 1967 for what became the Push/Pull system of a hook-and-bail arrangement temporarily connecting two or more scrapers to help each other load. The system is still in use, and Terex and others also offered similar systems. |
