The industry at large This issue, in honor of INTERMAT 2015 in Paris, France this April (event information, 10283874), we took the opportunity to delve a little deeper into the European construction and agricultural machinery markets.

According to the Construction Equipment and Building Material Machinery

Association (VDMA), the European construction equipment industry will be

hitting another slow down as it takes on the Stage V emissions standards set in motion for 2019/2020 implementation for mobile equipment.

In 2015, many manufacturers of construction equipment will be again invest-

ing in emissions reduction technologies to meet 97/88/EC level requirements currently under review. According to Joachim Strobel, Deputy Chairman of

the VDMA and Managing Director of Liebherr EMtec GmbH, level 5 emissions

standards are achievable technologically, so the main focus of the discussion is includes January 1, 2020 for mobile equipment between 56 and 130 kW, and Jandeadlines to predict, plan and implement the technology effectively.

The overall European construction equipment market improved 7% in 2014

from the previous year, due mainly to the strong demand for earth moving and

road construction equipment. Read more on the European construction equipment market on page 26 in, “Constructing the Europe of tomorrow.”

CEMA, the European Association for Manufacturers of Agricultural Machinery

based in Brussels, predicts Europe’s agricultural equipment market to drop 5 to

10% in 2015. One reason given by CEMA for lower ag equipment sales in Europe was simply the natural economic cycle of decline following a boom, such as the

agricultural machinery sales boom between 2011 and 2013. Also, the lower com-

modity prices currently being experienced reduce a farmer’s income which limits investments and future equipment purchases.

Aside from the European equipment market analysis, we also delved deep-

er into the fluid power industry with four articles covering a range of product

2015

begins on positive note The big picture for the U.S. economy is encouraging. Fourth quarter 2014 GDP

growth was 2.6%. While down from the sizzling 5.0% rate of

the previous quarter, this is still quite respectable. In addition, the labor market continues

to show improvement. New

job creation has been strong and compensation is finally

beginning to pick up. All of this

U.S. Leading Indicator: •• The leading indicator series has

incorporating rebenchmarked underlying data and moving the base year forward from 2004 to 2010.

There is finally some better

economic news coming from Europe. Activity in the Euro-

zone has picked up a bit, led, as

usual, by Germany. Driving forces include lower energy prices, a weaker euro, and the

time and money. Hostens adds there already exists an accurate full ROPS virtual test for buses under UN ECE Regulation 66.

The acceptance of virtual tests will

of physical tests. He says that while for

some tests it will be easy to demonstrate the virtual test is more accurate than the physical, others will be more difficult. “An important point to keep in mind

is that although most of the technical

content can be fixed in legislation, the

acceptance criteria need to be defined and agreed upon with the respective technical services and approval au-

At the moment, CEMA is still assessing

which areas of virtual testing to propose based on which ones will provide the most meaningful role and value for

manufacturers. Suitable tests will not

only have to offer a high value-add to

manufacturers, but also ease of drafting content and have a high possibility of

acceptance. Once a shortlist of requirements and their tests has been assem-

Director, SDLG North America. “But,

we started to see SDLG aggressively growing in the export markets. For example, in Brazil, Chinese wheel

loader sales went from 10 to 50% of the market in just five years.”

The unexpected growth prompt-

their customers use the equipment for over 1,500 hours per year. By

looking at the customer pool in a

different way, it allowed us to see

that about half of the customers that buy wheel loaders (either new or

late-model used premium machines) use the vehicle for only 1,000 hours per year or less,” says Quinn. The

perspective helped SDLG see a larger

“We are selling a standardized

If a customer walks in and is talking about how much the machine will

about it being the most productive, it just has to be reliable. It’s not

going to be working all day, and it’s not going to be used for that long, but it needs to be available when

he needs it. In that way, it’s a lot like renting equipment.”

When does value make sense?

There are certain industries and

applications where the SDLG value

equipment degradation due to the prolonged and extensive chemical exposure, one branch of Sylvite is turning to SDLG wheel loaders to mitigate damage.

The Lakeland, Florida-based

Sylvite branch purchased an SDLG LG959 in lieu of a more expensive

machine. With fewer electronic parts subjected to the corrosive materials, there is much less damage to

the wheel loader – and to Sylvite’s bottom line. Fewer electronics

loaders at value prices. They don’t

chines which, as shown in the case of

the corrosive materials industries, is a major plus.”

Beyond damaging applications,

lower operation hour situations are also where SDLG makes sense. “If

you’re going to be in the machine all day working long hours, you’ll

want the most fuel efficient, highest productivity and most comfortable

vehicle available, which is the premium market,” says Quinn.

When it comes to government

The evolution

can get you out of the conundrum of

The first generation of the valve driver product line was the EVDR1 launched in 2005. “Even then we had derivatives for fan drives and transmissions,” (the EFDR1 and ETDR1) says Chris Shader, Electronic Project Manager, HydraForce. After about five years of production release, HydraForce began to see shortcomings of the product. “Originally it only had a 6-pin receptacle and it didn’t have CANbus on it. The EFDR1, for example, had a single input and no CANbus, so it was essentially a single input temperature control, and that is all it could ever be,” he says. The second iteration (and most recently developed and launched) valve drivers feature an “A” at the end of the product name. “The second iteration was to upgrade the processor. That’s what allows us to have a small, remotely mounted device that has enough computing power to turn a complex CAN message into an easily digested input signal that can be used to drive current to the valve. When we decided to redesign the product, we were of course going to incorporate CANbus because we didn’t want the product to be sold and marketed as a stand-alone valve driver. We wanted to be able to market it as a slave device to a larger machine control system,” James explains. “With the new EFDR-0201A, we can use the analog input to read a physical temperature sensor, or we can pick one of the many CAN messages like oil temperature, coolant temperature, charge air temperature, or all of them.”

needing just one more output for a

function that was added after initial

concept. The ExDR drivers have also been tested for reliable operation

outdoors and can tolerate extreme

temperature, vibration and moisture

which make them ideal for mounting anywhere.”

The “x” in ExDR is a placeholder

for a variable of configuration for

the firmware. Multiple personalities

are available for each driver. General purpose drivers EVDR-0101A and

EVDR-0201A drive one or two coil outputs with a user-defined me-

tering profile featuring up to three

breakpoints, and independent input/ output ramps. The 0201A version

can operate as a slave, responding to CAN messages.

Proportional reversing fan control

EFDR-0201A modulates fan speed

based on input from a temperature sensor, or CAN messages from the

engine control module. The second

output controls a reversing function

to periodically clean debris from the vehicle’s radiator.

Time-based proportional drivers

ETDR-0101A and ETDR-0201A (not yet

released) use a digital input to trigger

the ramping sequence. They’re useful for applications like clutch control,

hot-shot or soft start. Using a digital

trigger to initiate the shift, ETDR can smoothly control clutch pressure

all parameters for operation and can also flash the driver with firmware updates.

“The point of these valve drivers,

and the free HF-Impulse software

we offer, is to control a time-based ramping profile for a clutch, for

example. We’re building that into our easy-to-use software, so it

eliminates having to create a com-

of the four user interfaces we offer. It makes it easier for you, being a

layman, never having programmed transmission clutch control, to get

on with your day and stop worrying about creating a math model that

can drive your algorithm. We’ve al-

ready done that,” says Chris James– Electronics Engineering Group Leader, HydraForce.

When the software was created

for the user interface, the PC and the software were embedded into the

controller and kept modular to allow the customer the option of custom-

izing the device. The HF service tool

That is not to say HydraForce doesn’t have OEM customers that prefer

coding the valve drivers themselves in house.

“But, at the end of the day, we

“Saving space on the machine is increasingly important

as OEMs add components to meet emissions regulations,”

says Heller. “The Danfoss RDM helps OEMs reduce the number of components and frees up space on their machines.”

To further enhance its benefits, Danfoss announced new

options for the RDM in January (learn more, 12033227). These include a speed sensor for more precise system

efficiency control and availability of the motor in higher displacements for use in larger machines.

Providing power when needed

Eaton recently announced new inverse proportional pressure control and remote pressure control options for its

X20 piston pump (learn more, 12035138). Available in three frame sizes, the pump is compactly designed to fit into

tight spaces and features 20% fewer parts than traditional pump designs, says Bob Isaacs, Engineering Manager of

New Product Development - Piston Pumps at Eaton Corp.

The newly added control options are designed to further

enhance the efficiency of the systems in which the pump is incorporated. Inverse proportional pressure control (IPPC) helps reduce fuel use by providing accurate and effi-

cient control only when power is needed. It allows pump

pressure to be electronically controlled so that as current

increases, the set pressure reduces. Engine power can then be directed where it is most needed to support the vehi-

cle’s operating cycle, saving fuel and boosting productivity. “Fuel is saved when power consumption is regulated based on the system need, rather than providing only a set level of power,” says Isaacs.

He adds that testing of the IPPC option has shown

advantages such as faster response and better control

stability which help ensure improved fuel optimization.

Common applications include management of fan speed for engine cooling systems.

COMPACT

WITHOUT THE COMPROMISE When you incorporate a multi-function hydraulic cartridge valve solution in your machine design, you can reduce manifold size, the number of ports, and machining costs, while increasing flow passage efficiency. HydraForce multi-function valves incorporate two or more functions into a single valve, allowing for the design of a lighter, more compact valve package. The result is more responsive machine performance and efficient use of available horsepower. Discover a more efficient manifold solution at hydraforce.com/Multi-Function_valves.

The remote pressure control (RPC) option saves fuel by

only delivering the pressure a system needs. It works in

conjunction with a remote relief valve that can be manually or electronically adjusted when there needs to be

a change to the working pressure within a system. “This

Making tracks to the South Pole

Severely cold temperatures led Massey Ferguson to use thermal protection on the cab floor to ensure performance of the electronics, as well as on the liquid-free battery.

The cab of the tractor was one of

the key areas where changes were made to ensure the comfort and

safety of Ossevoort. Massey Ferguson placed an additional heating

system in the cab and added thermal protection to the windows. Polycarbonate windows were used instead

of glass because the material is more

Severely cold temperatures

of the various electronics would not

was used because battery liquid

Adapting ag tires for extreme environments

Massey Ferguson partnered with

Trelleborg for the development of

the tires that would be used on the Antarctica2 tractor (learn more,

tires and rims. “We decided to join Massey Ferguson in this

adventure because the demanding conditions of Antarctica

require flotation at extremely low pressure, grip and traction, as well as reduced fuel consumption,” says Piero Mancinelli, R&D Director at Trelleborg Wheel Systems. And because

farmers face many of the same requirements, he says the lessons learned from this project will help the company

further maximize flotation, grip and fuel efficiency for future agricultural tire designs.

For Antarctica2, Mancinelli says the company wanted

to use a tire that was suitable for normal field operations

instead of creating a special one just for the expedition. It

knew that in order to cope with the varying temperatures,

ice and snow conditions of Antarctica, the tire would need to provide good flotation for enhanced pressure distribution on the ground and traction to ensure reduced fuel consumption, higher grip and increased drive comfort

and handling. “With these specific challenges in mind, we turned to our ProgressiveTraction tire which is character-

ized by a special double lug that operates on the ground

at different times, progressively releasing higher traction

when and where required,” he says. “The double lug also provides the tire with better floatation capability at low pressure.”

For operation over the soft ground found in Antarctica,

Trelleborg adapted the tread pattern of the Progressive-

Traction tire (product information, 11135225) by reducing its height and rounding the tread at the shoulder. This

design moves less snow as the tire runs over the ground, therefore providing easier maneuverability.

The company also created a special tire carcass capable

of performing at pressures as low as 4.2 psi. In addition, a

The 505 backhoe could cut trench

and lift 45,000 pounds at a 15-foot radius over either end. The bucket

could pivot 133 degrees, which combined with 53,500 pounds of hoist

force, 35,600 pounds of crowd force and 35,600 pounds of wrist action force gave it tremendous digging

power. Its 2-yard capacity was the largest on the market.

Even with these advantages, the

do, it could be equipped with a 3-1/2 yard bucket for rock excavation.

suffered cycling between the bank and the dump. It was marketed as

being less expensive and, at 92,000

pounds, easier to move than a 1-1/2

yard capacity cable shovel, and able to dig tougher material than a 2-1/2 yard cable shovel.
