A double celebration It was a pleasure to have Ne’ma Al Busaidi, the only woman to win a seat at the recent Majlis A’Shura elections at our office. Simple and down-to-earth best describes this lady who has certainly blazed a trail with her win. It’s also note-worthy because not a single woman made it to the Shura Council in the last elections. Ne’ma is not only a winner, but a role model for a generation of young Omani women who want to follow their dreams and achieve success. It was a friendly conversation in which she outlined, in great length, what she wanted to do for women and the community in general. We are very proud of her and wish her good luck in all her endeavours. November 19 is International Men’s Day. Yes, the men in our lives must be celebrated too as men and women are inextricably linked. Of course, it goes without saying, we love the men in our lives – our fathers, husbands, brothers, sons and friends! We have a couple of features especially for this and we hope you’ll enjoy them. Women in the Sultanate continue to be pioneers and achievers in different fields. For them, the sky is the limit when it comes to achieving something they have dreamt of. From engineering, fashion, entertainment, education, technology to sports, there is no field that has not been touched by the innovative spirit of the Omani woman. Next month, Al Mar’a will host the first ever Al Mar’a Excellence Awards, a platform that will applaud and honour women from diverse fields. You can read more on these awards, how to nominate yourself and others in this issue. Here’s wishing all of you Eid Mubarak and until next month, stay cool, people!

WOW ISSUE Every year, it’s really wonderful to note the different ways in which your magazine supports the cause of breast cancer awareness. It was wonderful to read all the stories this time round too. The one on the mammogram experience was really educative and informative. I am past the age of 40 and I have always dreaded going for a mammogram because of two reasons. One, I always thought it was painful and the other was fear. I was afraid that something could be wrong. But after reading about the experience and the informative article by Dr. Smita Lulla, I went in for my first screening mammogram recently. Like the article said, it was a just a little bit of discomfort I had to endure. I am happy to say that my reports were normal. I am no longer frightened and would go in for regular mammograms as suggested by my doctor. I hope that the articles have made more women aware about going in for a mammogram, as you rightly pointed out, ‘it can make a difference between life and death.’ SALMA AL RIYAMI - SEEB INSIGHTFUL STORIES I simply loved the cover of your October issue. The cause of breast cancer awareness has been portrayed in a very aesthetic and subtle manner. I also read the stories on breast cancer awareness with great interest. I particularly liked the way in which ‘the mammogram experience’ was written.

Simple and straight to the point without being emotional. After all, it’s something we women need to undergo after a certain age, and so why do we need to be afraid of it? I’ve been having regular mammograms since the age of 45 and I hope more women would shed their fear and realize that it’s but a small step to take when it comes to their health. Thank you Al Mar’a, for the insightful articles. PREETI DHAR - GHUBRA DIVERSE INFO The article on Denmark wants me to go there, right now! The way the article is written brings out vividly what one can expect from the wonderful country. Peace and tranquility, here I come! I also liked your fashion feature on the AutumnWinter trends! As a fashionista, there was enough information for me to look my best this season. Al Mar’a sure provides a wealth of information on every topic possible. SHAYMA AL BALUSHI - QURUM VEG SPECIAL I never knew there was a World Vegetarian Day until I was flipping through the Cuisine pages of your last issue. The recipes were simple and easy to replicate in any kitchen. And mouth-watering for hard-core vegetarians too! I am vegetarian and espouse the cause whenever I can and so I showed the recipes to a few of my non-vegetarian friends who tried them out too. Needless to say, the end
results were amazing. Hope you make regular and interesting vegetarian detours in your cuisine section. RAGINI BHATT - DARSAIT POT-POURRI I loved reading the interview of Biba in your Profile section. She surely comes across as a woman of many worlds. Her thoughts and ideas were refreshing and I’m sure that her experiences have shaped her personality in different ways. Looking forward to more such articles on women of substance. And by the way, I sorely miss your ‘Workwise’ articles. They made interesting reading on the different issues at the workplace. I hope you revive them again. So also Parenting… there used to be some great tips for parents out there. SHAIMA KHAN - MUTTRAH

W
hen it comes to a cause like breast cancer awareness, whatever we do is not enough, because reiteration is key. Yes, women need to be constantly educated about one of the most common cancers affecting them. To this end, the National Association for Cancer Awareness organised an exhibition aptly titled, ‘The Power in Your Hands’ at Qurum City Centre. The inauguration was attended by Her Highness Sayyida Dr. Mona bint Fahad Al Said, assistant vice-chancellor for external cooperation, SQU and patron of NACA and other dignitaries. At the exhibition, free mammograms were offered at the Mobile Mammography Unit stationed there. Doctors and counsellors
were also present to answer any queries related to breast cancer and other forms of cancer. In addition, there were other programmes that included yoga, pilates, martial arts and entertainment events. To spread the message of breast cancer awareness further, the 8th annual Cancer Awareness Walk was held on October 25 which began from the area outside the Ministry of Justice building. The walk attracted a huge number of participants who passed on the message, ‘Show you care. Be aware.’ Apart from women, it was also heart-warming to see men, teenagers and children join the cause. The exhibition and the walk were important steps towards cancer awareness and the turnout at both events proved, ‘Together, We Can!’ NOVEMBER 2011 15

FEATURE- INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DAY
ON THE OCCASION OF INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DAY, AL MAR’A PROFILES SOME OF THE HOTTEST CELEB DADS IN HOLLYWOOD…
T
hese Hollywood hotties are great daddies too! And they have proved that their celebrity statuses are no deterrent to being doting and understanding parents. Whether it’s taking time off for the birth of their children or taking a break to enjoy some quality bonding, these celebrity dads are happy being ‘on duty’ with their kids! And yes, it does add to both their ‘hot’ and ‘cool’ quotients too!
Cool 24 NOVEMBER 2011 1
TOM CRUISE
Dad’s the word: “I’m a father, you know. I always wanted to be a father. Remember when you first held your child? It’s like wow, tremendous sense of responsibility.”
WILL LL S SMITH H
Tom Cruise is a proud and happy dad to Suri, 5, if you didn’t know that already! Did you see the pictures of the Father’s Day weekend where the entire family spent time in the sun with Katie Holmes and Suri in Florida? Cruise calls himself a wonderful father and PDAs are proof enough of that. It’s quite a far cry from his own childhood where his father Thomas Cruise Mapother II is supposed to have been a ‘bully and a coward’, according to the actor. But the extravagant spending on his little girl may surely raise some eyebrows. Cruise is said to have spent $3 million on her wardrobe and apparently $30,000 on a custom-made miniature replica of an Indy race car, or the tabloids would like us to believe. Cruise’s also father to Isabella and Connor, the kids he adopted with ex-wife Nicole Kidman… though not much is spoken about them today. It’s little Suri who hogs the limelight… and Cruise is pretty much playing putty in her hands. Ah! Celebs and their children!
Dad’s the word: “From the first time the doctor placed you in my arms I knew I’d meet death before I’d let you meet harm. Although questions arose in my mind, would I be man enough?”
He may be b a hot-shot h movie ie star tar but he’s also a devoted devoted father her of three children, ild dr T Trey, Jaden and nd Will Willow. w Will and Jaden aree aall sset to become the biggest biiggest father-son fa er-s box-office ce draw dra d in history as they will reunite re nitee for M. Cute and un but also quite q e a role model as a father, Will Smith is proof of how funny a celebrity el brity can also als spend spe a lot of time tim with his kids. And now, Willow, 7 has hitt thee red carpet ca pet with w Kit Kittredge: Kittt An American Girl in which she co-stars. co- ars. And you yo don’t don have to guess where she gets her acting tips from… frrom… dad, d d, off course! course While Whi mom Jada J Pinkett-Smith is content with f m the th he sidelines, sidel nes, basking b gushing from in mommy glory. That’s one cute … with Dad ad leading le celebrity family… the way.
FEATURE- INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DAY
BRAD PITT
Dad’s the word: “Angie and I do everything we can to carve out some semblance of normalcy for them, to recreate the kinds of moments that were special for us. It’s not unusual for the kids to be covered in paint. We have mud fights. It’s chaos from morning until the lights go out, and sometimes after that.”
JOHNNY DEPP
This hottie can handle a handful and he’s proved it well! The actor and Angelina Jolie, in total, have six children. Of which they adopted three, Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt, Pax Thien Jolie-Pitt and Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt. The kids were initially adopted by Angelina, Pitt adopted them after getting together with Jolie. Their three biological children are Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, Knox Leon Jolie-Pitt and Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt. And the Brangelina couple does take their role of parents very seriously. Despite the huge bill for nannies, language tutors and private jets, the children prefer nothing more than spending time with their parents. Tabloids go gaga over the Brangelina offspring – whether it’s their trip with dad Pitt to a film set or to a park, or the clothes they wear. The couple is planning to move to a chateau to the South of France. A great actor, a responsible father – what’s that they say? The complete man!
Dad’s the word: “Anything I’ve done up till May 27th 1999 was kind of an illusion, existing without living. My daughter, the birth of my daughter, gave me life.”
One of the sexiest and most talented men in Hollywood is a great dad too! And Johnny Depp can’t gush enough about being father to daughter Lily-Rose, 11 and son Jack, 9 with his girlfriend of 12 years, Vanessa Paradis. He admits that spending time away from his family is ‘almost impossible’. So most often, his family is with him on the sets like at the recent filming of his new movie in Puerto Rico. The Hollywood star drives his kids to school whenever he can, revealing it’s an enjoyable experience for him. But he also recently confessed that his children are no longer so eager to be seen with him and like most adolescent kids, they now find their dad embarrassing. And you know who he’s been catching up with for parenting lessons? Angelina Jolie! Depp admires her as a ‘cool mom’… Well, from one cool dad to a cool mom, there are a lot of tips to share, right?
26 NOVEMBER 2011
TOBEY MAGUIRE From superhero to super dad, this Spiderman ain’t complaining! Now, that he’s handed over the rubber suit to newcomer Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire is spending more and more time with his two children. It’s not uncommon to see the actor strolling the streets of Los Angeles with his jewellery designer wife, Jennifer Meyer and their two children, Ruby, 5 and Otis, 2. Whether it’s food at an organic restaurant or dropping his daughter to school, Maguire is a hands-on dad! And didn’t you really dig that cute picture of a relaxed Maguire and Meyer with a child on each hip? Aww! We vote him the cutest daddy, yet!
Dad’s the word: “I love being a dad… yeah, it’s definitely amazing! It’s like everybody says, all the clichés are true it’s indescribable and you just have to be there to understand it. You know, you don’t really get it until you’re there.”
ORLANDO BLOOM
He may be the recent dad on the block but being daddy to nine-month-old Flynn is the most exciting part of Orlando Bloom’s life. He also recently said that becoming a husband (he’s married to supermodel Miranda Kerr) and father has given him a new zest for his work on screen. The actor tries as far as possible not to be away from Flynn and is trying to schedule his celeb life so that he can be a hands-on dad as well! So much so that he’s planning to take them both to New Zealand straight to the sets of The Hobbit that he’ll be working on. And wait that’s not all! The actor was voted No. 1 in Hello magazine’s special celebrity father’s day poll this year. This daddy is simply the best!
Dad’s the word: “Having a child has really centered me. I feel more focused and it has helped me to value what’s important and what’s not!” NOVEMBER 2011 27
PROFILE - INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DAY
Man of Substance H.E. YUSUF SALOOJEE, SOUTH AFRICAN AMBASSADOR TO THE SULTANATE OF OMAN SPEAKS TO AL MAR’A ON INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DAY, GENDER QUALITY, HIS LIFE AS A DIPLOMAT, ET AL
I
t’s a pleasure interacting with H.E. Yusuf Saloojee, South African Ambassador to Oman. A man of diverse thoughts, tastes and interests, he’s also our perfect role model for International Men’s Day. H.E. Yusuf Saloojee spent an incredible 22 years in exile during the apartheid regime in South Africa and his is a story not only of grit and determination but one of strong belief that peace and justice will always prevail.
From a teacher to a revolutionary to a diplomat, H.E. Yusuf Saloojee traces his story and also touches on other topics like gender equality, his inspirations and his impressions of Oman in this freewheeling interview with Al Mar’a.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CONCEPT OF INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DAY? DO YOU THINK MEN NEED TO BE CELEBRATED TOO? I do not think that men need to be really celebrated. Though I believe that having an International Women’s Day is good because women over centuries have been considered lesser beings, exploited and looked down upon. But if having a special day for men means celebrating the positive contributions they have made in
different fields, then I think they can be given their rightful due.
WHAT DOES GENDER EQUALITY MEAN TO YOU? I think it’s a very important issue. The simple thing to understand about gender quality is that women must have the same opportunity as men, whether it’s in terms of jobs, promotions and whatever they are qualified for. If they are talented, they should not be supressed but given the same chances as everyone else in terms of fitting into wherever they belong, at whatever levels and whichever field they choose to be in. When you talk of women’s rights, some women have the misconception that it means that they are better than men. When they think this way, they are as bad as men who say they are better than women. So the emphasis should be on the fact that women should not be deprived of any opportunity men enjoy just because they are women.
CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF… AND YOUR JOURNEY AS A DIPLOMAT? I grew up in South Africa during the apartheid period where strict separation was practised between whites and non-
whites from the day one was born. From a very young age, I did not like the fact that some people were privy to some things because they were white. I went to my first protest meeting at the age of 13 to protest against the detention of the leaders of the non-white liberation movement which had people like Nelson Mandela and the late Yusuf Dadoo. Later, I wanted to be a lawyer but lack of finances and the quota system prevented me from becoming one. I opted for teaching because I thought I could teach children the value of peace, justice and equality and I inculcated in their minds that they must not accept racial or religious discrimination of any kind. I was detained by the security police for a short while. I also used to work for the underground African National Congress (ANC) and I was told that it was better to leave the country and so went into exile for 22 years. During that time, I taught part-time and was the ANC’s chief representative in Canada and also worked in Lusaka and then came back to South Africa. In 1998, I was appointed ambassador of South Africa to the UAE. My next posting was Iran and then I came to this beautiful country of Oman.
FROM A SCHOOL TEACHER, A REVOLUTIONARY TO A DIPLOMAT, HOW HAS THE JOURNEY BEEN? I can say that it has been nice but also very difficult. There were times I’ve wondered where my next cup of tea was coming from or whether I was going to eat the next day or not. But I maintained my spirit that justice will prevail and one day we will see a free South Africa. And I can say that the sacrifice has been well worth it not only for me, but for all who participated in the struggle. I learned a great deal from the leadership of the African National Congress – to be humble, friendly and to uphold peace, freedom and justice and also about the equality of men and women.
WHO HAVE BEEN YOUR GREATEST INSPIRATIONS WHEN IT CAME TO WOMEN? I greatly admired the late Albertina Sisulu who was a political activist and leader in her own right; so great in thought and yet so humble. I am also inspired by Winnie Mandela and a great admirer of the late Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi. I also had a great love
for my mother who taught me a lot of things, especially how to cook.
SO COOKING IS ONE OF YOUR PASSIONS, WE HEAR… Yes, it’s a hobby and also helps me unwind and take my mind off stress. I love cooking a host of dishes, especially international cuisine. Every now and then, I cook up a storm in the kitchen. At present, I am very interested in fusion cuisine and experimenting with a fusion of Indian and Portuguese.
DO YOU HAVE OTHER INTERESTS LIKE READING, MUSIC, MOVIES, ETC? I read for both information as well as pleasure. I love biographies; people interest me a lot. I watch a movie only if it makes some sense to me.
WHAT ARE YOUR IMPRESSIONS OF OMAN? It’s a beautiful country and very often referred to by many as ‘the Switzerland of the Middle East’ because of its cleanliness, beauty and because it’s well-organised. Omanis are very humble, friendly and down-to-earth and that makes political work and building relationships between the two countries much easier.
WHAT IS THE MOTTO THAT YOU LIVE BY? My main theme in life is non-violence. I wouldn’t like any living being hurt, whether it’s animals or human beings. I think we have enough brains to resolve issues without causing anyone harm or hurt.

FOCUS
Winning T
hough 77 women stood for the Majlis A’Shura elections last month, only one woman managed to win! The results were quite disappointing but definitely better than 2007 where not a single woman was elected to the Shura Council. Ne’ma bint Jamil bin Farhan Al Busaidi, made up for women’s loss in the last session by winning from the Wilayat of Seeb. “It was a proud moment and a sign of victory of women,” Ne’ma said in an interview with Al Mar’a where she also touched upon various aspects of her journey to the Shura Council and her plans for the future. She also thanked His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and expressed her sincere gratitude to her supporters. She hopes that she will be successful in her role and promises to work towards the best interests of women and the community. Excerpts from the interview:
NE’MA AL BUSAIDI, THE LONE WOMAN TO MAKE IT TO THE SHURA COUNCIL SPEAKS ON HER VICTORY, WOMEN’S STATUS AND HER PLANS FOR THE FUTURE
30 NOVEMBER 2011
Edge DID YOU EMPLOY ANY PARTICULAR STRATEGY THAT LED TO YOUR VICTORY?
influenced by men. For example, the husband tells his wife whom to vote for.
I did have a specific plan in mind. I started to communicate early with the residents in the area and conveyed my message and goals in a simple manner. I paid several visits to villages and regions in Seeb; where I met with voters and spoke to them about what I wanted to do. I also stressed upon the woman’s ability to shoulder responsibility and be able to participate in the political arena as much as a man can.
WOULD YOUR FOCUS BE PRIMARILY ON WOMEN’S ISSUES? WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR WOMEN IN THE SULTANATE?
DID YOU MAKE ANY PROMISES? I did not make any promises; but just presented my ideas and how I’d like to implement them once elected. I think it was my simplicity that made people accept my ideas and support me. They knew I was honest and true to what I believed in.
DID YOU TARGET ONLY WOMEN OR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN? I targeted both men and women. However, women were my greatest supporters though I cannot deny that some men too supported me.
WHY DO YOU THINK NOT ONE WOMAN MADE IT TO THE SHURA COUNCIL IN 2007? I think it’s because our society still looks up to men to assume responsibility and think that they are the best when it comes to leadership and guidance. Also, the other reason is that women are still
I am not only a woman but also a member of the society I live in that has its own issues and concerns. I would strive to honour the responsibility placed on me as a member from the Wilayat of Seeb. Meanwhile, I will also be the voice of women and consider issues pertaining to them. I will prove that a woman is capable of shouldering any responsibility and definitely has the ability to lead. Women are mothers, teachers, doctors, engineers, ambassadors and are excelling in whatever field they choose to be in.
and develop solutions to various issues.
HOW DID THE OMANI WOMAN BENEFIT FROM THESE ELECTIONS? Winning this election has made the women in our country proud and happy. Even though some of them did not vote for me, this victory would mean a strong push in the right direction and act as an encouragement to other women to stand by female candidates and support them.
WHO HAS BEEN YOUR INSPIRATION IN LIFE? My mother has been my strongest supporter and has always encouraged me to do my best. I also attribute my success to the grace of Allah. Not many people were convinced because I was a woman. I have proved myself to them with my victory.
WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER PLANS? I will uphold national obligations, and develop studies to serve women in particular and the community in general. Presently, I am discussing some family and economic issues with my state citizens. I will discuss national and general issues at the country and state of Seeb levels. I will communicate with people and reach out to understand their needs and represent them before the private and public sectors.
WOULD YOU SET UP AN OFFICE TO MEET CITIZENS? I will have a special place to receive citizens, discuss community interests
I have been a teacher for many years and have served my country well in this field but winning will certainly expand my role. I have also proved that women can also do as well as the men.
DO WOMEN IN OMAN RECEIVE DUE ATTENTION FROM THE GOVERNMENT? Women in Oman enjoy equal rights and opportunities. They receive a great deal of care and attention from the government. They hold prominent positions in different fields. I believe winning this election will change many things.

Bonnie Scotland WHEN IT COMES TO HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS, SCOTLAND IS ONE COUNTRY YOU JUST CAN’T BEAT. AL MAR’A EXPLORES SOME PLACES THAT MAKE FOR A FUN-TASTIC VACATION!
34 NOVEMBER 2011
I
f the very mention of Scotland conjures up images of the Loch Ness monster, Scrooge McDuck or Mel Gibson shouting, “Freedom!”, then let us say, dear reader, you need to book the next flight to the country and discover the delights that await you. Whether you’re looking for a culturally invigorating journey exploring historical sites or an adrenaline packed adventure, you’re sure to find exactly the right ingredients to make your holiday a truly memorable one. Here’s a little glimpse of what to expect… Edinburgh – The capital city, Edinburgh is a tourist’s delight. The first and most obvious place to visit would be the Edinburgh Castle which rests on a high volcanic rock and overlooks the city. The castle houses Scotland’s crown jewels, the Scottish National War Memorial, the Prisons of War exhibition and more. If you’re a history buff, opt for an audio tour and explore the castle at your own pace. Another famous landmark is the Scott Museum, a 200-foot spire dedicated to Sir Walter Scott. Brace yourself for a long climb to the top, but once you’re up there, the beautiful panoramic views make it all worthwhile. Portobello beach, Arthur’s seat, the National Museum, and the Royal Botanical Gardens are also must-visits. If you’re short on time, stick to the Royal Mile which covers all the not-to-be-missed attractions. Glasgow – For those who enjoy music, art and culture, Glasgow is the city to be. Begin your day at the Kelvingrove Museum followed by Riverside Museum and the Tall Ship at Glasgow Harbour. George Square, the University of Glasgow (including the Hunterian Museum) as well as Pollock Park which houses the Burrell House, are other
wonderful sights to explore. How can any trip be complete without any shopping? Sauchiehall Street along with the adjoining Buchanan Street is the place to be if you’re an ardent shopaholic. While hotspots like Merchant City or Byres Road are perfect for a fun nightout. Funky cafes to uber-chic restaurants, the evening breathes in new-life to the streets. (Insider tip: Don’t forget to catch a live musical performance at King-Tut’s Wah Wah Hut.) The Highlands – The Scottish highlands offer some astonishing heritage sites, outdoor activities and much more. If you enjoy modern outdoor activities then there are virtually an endless variety of things to do: quad biking, white water rafting, exploring gorges, archery, mountain biking, and the likes. Popular places for these activities are Fort William, Inverness and Oban. The Highlands also offer a brilliant choice for golfers with 44 courses and more than 600 holes, including Nairn. Riding, cycling
NOVEMBER 2011 35
TRAVEL and trekking are also popular choices for tourists and a great way of enjoying the local terrain. If adventure isn’t your thing, then explore the dozens of castles and ancient monuments; Eilean Donan Castle and Urquhart Castle are top choices for most tourists. The highest falls in Britain, Eas a Chual Aluinn near Kylesku (over 200m) are a sight for the eyes. Steall Falls in Glen Nevis and the Falls of Glomach in Kintail are also must-sees. Don’t forget to pick up some works of art. Inverness and other larger towns in the Highlands are famous for their ceramics, jewellery, glassware, and pottery. And as well as shopping you can often view the producers at work. Outer and Inner Hebrides – The Hebrides comprise a widespread and diverse archipelago off the west coast
HONOURABLE MENTIONS (DON’T MISS OUT ON THESE!) 1. Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park: No trip to Scotland is complete without a trip to Loch Lomond. From canoeing to wildlife watching, there’s something for everyone. 2. St Andrews: St Andrews, the birthplace of Golf, is not only for golfers. Beautiful seascapes and fun activities like sailing and sea kayaking make it an ideal stop for the whole family. 3. Ben Nevis at Fort William: Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest

Aviemore: A quiet village in the Highlands of Scotland, Aviewmore is famous for its ski-slopes. 5. Royal Deeside: Although mostly famous for the Balmoral Castle, summer home of the Royal Family, the magnificent valley of the River Dee has some of Scotland’s finest scenery.
of Scotland. The main regions of the Outer Hebrides are Lewis, Harris, North and South Uist, Taransay, Benbecula and St Kilda while the Inner Hebrides comprise Isle of Skye, Mull, Islay and Jura. Golf, sea angling, wildlife spotting and fishing are some of the popular activities. The Island of Harris, often described as the ‘high heart of the Hebrides’, has a diverse landscape. From rocky landscapes and miles of golden sandy beaches to lochs, meadows and cliffs – a trip to the island is an experience like no other. Try your hand at sea kayaking at Shetland and explore the diverse coastlines, or clear water paddling at the Isle of Barra. Scapa Flow at Orkney is home to numerous German shipwrecks left over from World War One; many just a few metres from the surface. So whether you’re a beginner or an expert, make sure you try the finest wreck diving locations in the United Kingdom.

KRUPA KHIMJI TALKS TO AL MAR’A ON HER PASSION FOR PLANNING AND ORGANISING EVENTS AND HER NEW VENTURE…
Y
ou want every event in your life to be an unforgettable one, to be etched in the memories of those who are a part of it, forever! And that’s where event planning and organising comes into the picture! For if you’re looking for something creative and outof-the-box, you need experts to plan the event for you, right down to the last detail. A new company in Oman promises all these and more. And the brains behind the venture, Mosaic Events is Krupa Khimji who has translated her passion for planning, organising and executing events to what she hopefully, believes would be a successful business enterprise as well. Mosaic Events will offer onestop solutions for any kind of event – from weddings, anniversary parties, birthday parties, business conferences, entertainment events; you
38 NOVEMBER 2011
name it and they are ready for it! Krupa believes that Mosaic Events will be exclusive and ‘different’ from what’s being offered in the market right now. “Most event companies recycle ideas from earlier events as it’s easier for them. We, at Mosaic Events want every event to be unique and exclusive. This is where detailing comes into the picture. Everything from choosing the paper for the invitation card, the table decoration, the fabrication, the logistics and transport to the final execution will be taken care of in great detail. And that’s why we will not take more than one client at a time,” says Krupa. The key words here are ‘creative’ and ‘out-of-the-box’. For this, Krupa has a team working with her, and will also outsource teams that will help out with various events. Mrunal Khimji, renowned fashion designer and owner of Mrunal’s boutique will also partner her in the creative side of the business.“I don’t want to just stick with a few people, I want to work with a lot of creative people if possible,” she says. Does she believe that there’s a market for such a business in Oman? “It’s definitely a niche
market and we are looking at a small number of people, looking at something unique and who want their events to be different and creative in every way. These are people looking at special and personal attention, something’s exciting, elegant and of course, ‘out-ofthe-box’.
of normal invitation cards, I chose to embroider the name of each invitee on towels for a pool party. There were plenty of activities for the parents too; foosball and table tennis tables, a coffee corner, pizza ovens and ice cream trolleys made sure every single guest was entertained,” she says.
Krupa’s passion for organising events goes back a very long time. Born and brought up in Bombay, she went to Boston after high school for a Bachelor’s in Marketing and Entrepreneurship. After that, she completed her MBA in Family Managed Business. Doing a finishing school course from Switzerland, Krupa believes, has also contributed to the passion for organising events as you are so clued into everything needed for the purpose.
She has also been associated with the Sapphire Ball Committee since the last two years and also organised, planned and led a team for the Vikram Hazra concert. It’s the attention to detail that Krupa wants to bring into every event. “I guess my inspiration comes from my father who’s a very organised person. My creative inspiration comes from mom.” And for her, this is a passion that’s only grown over time and will continue to.
She remembers two events she organised in Bombay where the guests were absolutely bowled over by the concept and execution of the events. One was a wedding anniversary party where the takeaway was special perfume, matching the personality of each guest mixed on the spot by a perfume manufacturer and a Hawaiian theme party for guests in the 50s. In Oman, she organised a birthday party for a one-yearold that she retails with all its exciting details. “Instead
Krupa’s enthusiasm is indeed infectious. It’s clear that she enjoys every bit of what she’s doing, “I love being excited about things. I believe that one should enjoy every moment of one’s life. I love framing my memories… I am lucky to be able to do the things I love.” Al Mar’a wishes her the very best in her new venture. For more details, write to krupa@mosaic.om

THE LAUNCH OF THE WOMEN’S SAILING PROGRAMME BY OMAN SAIL WILL OPEN UP NEW VISTAS FOR WOMEN IN THE SULTANATE… AN AL MAR’A REPORT
I
t was a momentous occasion both for women and for Oman. And one that filled our hearts with happiness and pride! With the launch of the Women’s Sailing Programme by Oman Sail, women in Oman will soon ride a different and thrilling wave and reach sporting frontiers that they only dreamt of before! Thirty young women admitted to the programme and a distinguished group of guests watched in awe as the guest of

honour at the launch, Her Excellency Dr Madeeha bint Ahmed al Shibaniyah, the Minister of Education, unveiled the Farr 30 boat, which the women will be competing in during Sailing Arabia – The tour. The boat has received Royal blessings and is named Al Thuraya; a name that has been significant to sailors throughout history. It is the name of a star cluster, known as the Pleiades or Seven Sisters and its appearance in the sky was critical as it marked the start of the sailing season.
STARTING POINT To know how it all started, it’s interesting to go to the very beginning. Since its launch in 2008, Oman Sail has taken nearly 6,000 Omani children sailing, over half of which have been females. In July this year, Oman Sail welcomed 70 spirited young women into its sailing centres at Musannah and Marina Bandar Al Rowdha for the Women’s Programme Open Days. During the day, the participants took to the water for the first time, whilst on land, a series of
while also creating jobs and unique opportunities for the nation’s women. From Oman Sail’s national grassroots community programme to its 2020 Olympic ambitions, Omani women will be trained, coached, qualified, employed, developed and nurtured every step of the way, equipping them with all the necessary skills to excel. “I come from 400km away in the mountains and for many years had never seen the sea. HAVING SPENT OVER TWO DECADES IN THE ANTIQUES BUSINESS THERE ARE FEW WHO CAN MATCH ROSEMARY WHELAN’S EXPERTISE. MOREOVER, SHE IS BRINGING QUALITY FURNITURE TO THE DOORSTEPS OF CUSTOMERS IN OMAN. BY MAYANK SINGH
R
osemary Whelan, Principal, Richwood Antiques is excited about her upcoming antiques exhibition at Bait al Zubair Museum from December 5, 2011. The five day event is expected to give antique lovers in Oman a taste of the finest wares from Europe. “I have spent a lot of time in Paris and Dublin recently, handpicking each item for the exhibition. These pieces are being loaded and shipped to Oman as we speak,” says Rosemary. The collection will showcase a range of furniture for both home and office spaces. “These pieces are of a very high quality and straddle a varied price range. This is probably the best time to buy antiques in Europe as the slowdown has made it a buyer’s market,” adds Rosemary. Having been actively involved in the antiques trade in Ireland for almost 25 years Rosemary has the right credentials to hold such an exhibition. She is a member of The Irish Antique Dealers Association and has served as a valuable Council Member in the Association for several years. She is also an affiliated member of CINOA Internarionale des Negociants en Oeuvres d’Art -- an international association for art and antique experts around the world. She is a regular exhibitor at Ireland’s most prestigious antique and fine art fairs where she enjoys meeting both long established and new customers. Apart from a hands on experience in the antiques business, she was also the Editor and Partner of Antiques & Period Properties magazine -- a premium quality publication focused on the buying and selling of
antiques and fine art in Ireland, from 2003 to 2009. LOCAL MOORINGS Having relocated to Oman 18 months back along with her family, the latent desire and demand for fine quality antiques in Oman, was soon apparent to Rosemary. “There is a huge interest in antiques in the Sultanate, but like everything else it has to be accessible. Buying and shipping individual antique pieces can be prohibitively expensive,” says Whelan. To tap this market she established Richwood Antiques, a company specialising in the sale of beautiful 19th Century European antique furnishings. Given her huge knowledge and avid passion for quality antique furniture and decorative objects, customers in Oman can expect to be offered a unique selection of exquisite items to grace every room in the home or office. Rosemary will offer beautiful furniture constructed in exotic timbers of mahogany, rosewood, satinwood and walnut, finely carved and decorated with intricate inlays and fine brasswork skillfully executed by craftsmen of the period to antique aficionados in Oman. Apart from these magnificent hand polished mahogany dining room tables, sets of chairs, sideboards, display cabinets, bookcases, desks, wardrobes, and spectacular French gilt mirrors finished and gilded in 24 carat gold will also be on display at the upcoming exhibition at Bait al Zubair museum.
every area of the home including entrance hall, living and dining room and bedrooms. Her recent commercial projects include luxury hotels, restaurants and retreats. Ask her whether antiques are a fad of the rich and famous and she is quick to retort, “Antique refers to something that is old and has unmatched value. The quality of timber and craftsmanship determines the value of a piece of antique and its eminence is apparent even to an untrained eye. A piece of antique never loses value like shares or stocks, but only appreciates over a period of time. ” Furniture crafted 100 to 200 years ago were handmade out of seasoned wood, and it is rare to find such a combination in today’s market where assembly line design from factories churn out me too products. So if you are looking for antique furniture to spruce up your living room or to decorate your dining area, then Rosemary’s upcoming antique exhibition is where you should be headed this December.
HANDS ON FEEL A touch and feel business, dealing in antiques is a specialisation that one rarely acquires by going to a college or university. Rosemary explains, “It takes close to 20 years of handling to acquire expertise in buying, maintaining and selling antique furniture and it would be foolish to venture into the antiques business untrained.” Rosemary also specialises in contract sales, working closely with architects and designers providing furniture and suitable decorative effects for both commercial and private projects. She usually works to the clients design specifications and requirements while providing appropriate pieces for every area of the project such as receptions, boardrooms, offices and for

& Sensuality TOP DRIVE
Sense PERFORMANCE, INDIVIDUALITY OR COMFORT –THE MERCEDES CLS 350 OFFERS THE EXTRAORDINARY ON EVERY METRIC. AN AL MAR’A REVIEW
B
ertha Benz the wife of Carl Benz, the inventor of the motor car – could hardly have suspected that she was using the first emergency tool in the history of the motor car when she was doing her hair on the morning of a beautiful day in 1888. Without telling her husband, Bertha drove the ‘patent motor car’ from Mannheim to Pforzheim to visit her mother. Her sons the 15 year old Eugen and 14 year Richard accompanied her on the journey of over 100 kms. The ride would make history as the world’s first motor car had
46 NOVEMBER 2011
never before completed this distance on a single trip. Having worked closely with her husband, Bertha knew the car better than anyone else. Even when the petrol line in the car suddenly became blocked due to poor fuel quality, she used her hairpin to unblock the line. By sacrificing her hairpin she demonstrated the everyday practicality of the motor car. Her memorable line ‘My hairpin came in handy’, not just heralded the future of mobility, but paid tribute to her courage, skills and pioneering spirit. The Mercedes CLS 350 embodies the essence of that timeless ride by combining timeless elegance with expressive design. A blend of style and intelligent design, the CLS is a harmonious blend of sensuality and sense. SOFT TOUCH Climb aboard and you’re met by an interior big on style, clarity and quality. It may share materials and controls with the latest E-class, but the dashboard and trims boast a unique eye catching design, something which helps imbue the new four-door with its own individual character before you’ve even turned the key. Close the door and this impression is further enhanced; a comparatively high belt line, shallow side glass and a driving position a full 18mm lower than the E-class contribute to give the CLS a traditional coupe like feel despite the inclusion of rear doors. These provide improved access to the rear, thanks to their added length and a larger door aperture. Accommodation wise, there is more head, shoulder and legroom all round. So you can stretch on a leisurely ride
without bothering about space to park your vanity kit, designer purses or children’s school bags. Add to it an enhanced boot space and the picture is complete. The CLS retains the driver-focussed themes that worked so well in the earlier version with better materials, a cleverly integrated entertainment system that gives a general sense that all is right with the world. The driving position is great and endlessly adjustable. The dynamic multi-contour seats with a massage function ensures that you remain agile and free spirited even after a long day at work. ATHLETIC FEEL The Airmatic suspension in comfort mode the low speed ride is pillowy soft. For those obsessed with that magic carpet glide, this is pretty enticing. The CLS offers a superb ride – its low speed compliance is outstanding and it gets better as one accelerates speed. Scythe into a tight radius bend and the CLS holds its line well for such a large and heavy car, allowing the driver to introduce added lock without the front end prematurely washing away. So whether you are negotiating city traffic or speeding on the highway, you can be rest assured about the impressive drive quality. The new CLS 350 hits all the right emotional buttons. Classy, sophisticated, roomier, faster, more economical and, crucially, better to drive than most of its competitors. Our verdict: Even after 123 years after Bertha Benz’s historic drive, women are sure to be tempted to take a runaway drive in this dream on wheels.

COLOUR YOUR LIFE
ZOMBIE INVASION
Dead Island, X Box 360, PS3 If you like zombie-type games, Dead Island is just right for you. It takes place on the fictional island of Banoi… where after a hard night of partying, people awaken to the zombie apocalypse. It’s an open world filled with zombies, zombies and more zombies where combat is focused heavily on confusion and melee. Digital fighting is done by using one of the shoulder buttons, with the option of throwing any weapon at an enemy. You could also choose the analogue combat method by using the analogue stick… This method is difficult though. It’s a little gruesome, but then that’s what most popular games are…
de Blob 2, Wii, Nintendo V, PS3, XBox 360 de Blob 2, is the latest installment in the de Blob series that may well appeal to your inner messy self. de Blob, if you don’t know already is a 2008 game that allows players to explore and liberate an alien city from the evil INKT Corporation that has taken over the city and outlawed all colour and fun from daily life. As de Blob 2, you can paint/colour the world the way you like and stamp all the bad guys in the process. Your adversaries are Comrade Black and his army of Inkies, and your mission is to restore peace and colour to the land. Mostly, the sections involve navigating through underground sewer sections, defeating enemies every so often, and hitting color switches to activate colour pumps. Once these sections are complete, you are brought back to the main area of the level. There, you find pools of paint scattered around the world. You can use these to absorb your desired colour, as well as destroying paint bots. Guiding you will be Pinky, the flying Sass-bot… It’s funny, entertaining and full of enjoyment… Go ahead, splash a lot of colour!
ON SONG
BOOGIE WOOGIE
Dance Evolution, Kinect This is a wonderful dancing game exclusively for Xbox 360 Kinect. It’s ‘real’ dancing with 30 tracks, including hip-hop, R&B, pop, eurobeat and dance and is supported with additional songs that can be downloaded. How do you play? All you have to do is just copy the on-screen character’s dance while hitting certain spots with your hands, drawing lines in the air, stepping on the beat and striking poses. The game does not track your whole body during the dance but uses a variety of ways to grade your actual performance. Green outlines will show up to the sides of the main dancer and show a pose that must be met quickly and the better your body matches the pose, the better your score is. Completely missing a post will result in a Boo! Dance and get fit too!
High School Musical: Sing It, Wii, PS2, X Box 360 If you liked the movies, you’ll love this one too! The super-successful Disney franchise is now on the video game realm. All your favourite characters from the movies – Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay, Ryan, Chad and Taylor urge you to sing along with the hits from the first two films. You select the character, song and singing location and then get to crooning the lyrics on the screen while your cell-shaded character dances on stage. You have to repeat the words that light up in a vocal fashion that matches the pitch and timing bars on the screen. The winner is of course, the performer with the higher score. You’ll repeat the process across three gameplay modes, Quick Play (grab and a song and a partner) Party Mode (where you are pitted against upto seven opponents in a battle for high score) and Story Mode. (it walks you through different High School Musical events and then have you sing a song that sums each up!) Time to ~exercise your vocal chords and have some fun! NOVEMBER 2011 49

BODY IMAGE ISSUES ARE A COMMON ADOLESCENT PROBLEM. BUT FAITH, PATIENCE, HOPE AND DYNAMISM OF ACTION WILL CREATE THAT INNER TRANSFORMATION NEEDED TO LIVE HEALTHY AND HAPPY LIFE, SAYS DR. PREMA SESHADRI
I
saw a lost look on her face. She looked demolished. Standing in front of her I could feel the fetid emission of her open wound. I didn’t know what had caused it but I was compelled to reach out and put my arms around her. I couldn’t seem to reach her. That’s how locked in she was in her despair. I felt that the only time when we really imprison ourselves is when we have lost confidence in ourselves. When we feel we have done something wrong. When we feel we have failed. I was intrigued and was compelled to find out what had caused this being to shrivel into a painful nothingness. I was also driven by a strong emotion that no human being should ever be allowed to get sucked in by such impregnable misery that they can’t see a single open window. I just couldn’t walk away. Over some hot tea, she slowly began to realise that there was somebody who actually wanted to reach out, not just wanting to know but also wanting to reach out. I am taking the liberty and this opportunity to reach out to all those out there who are suffering from a malaise that if not taken seriously will slowly but surely disintegrate the lives of, particularly girls and women, right in front of our eyes. I do believe that trying to find the cause would only lead to frustration, resentment, futile justifications and rationalisations, and will not really solve the problem. We need to act. There is no greater nightmare for a mother than the loss of her child. Losing them to physical diseases is heart-wrenching enough but how do you cope with their
loss to something as intangible as an emotional want, an emotional lack, an emotional disturbance? I lost my beloved young nephew to cancer. It was horrific. But we didn’t feel we had given him the dreaded disease. A dear friend jumped out from the window of a 20th floor of a building and for a while I was burdened by guilt about not having caught on to some signal that maybe he had been trying to send. But what happens to a mother who suddenly discovers that her daughter so dislikes herself that she is willing to starve her body and self to feel good? My friend always thought that she had broug brought up her child with plenty of physical aand emotional nutrients and that she had d done a good maternal job. Even more than that she had prided in the fact that she aand daughter had a really close connectio connection and there was nothing that her child hid from her. Waves of shock hit her when her daughter revealed how she had been abus abusing herself not for the last few days but tto her horror, for the last half-adozen yea years! Her bottom fell out of her life and she w was wracked with doubts. She began to d doubt her ability to communicate and to un understand. She began to think she had failed to be a good mother. She began to doubt h herself as a woman. Worse, she began to d doubt herself as a human being. The years that had been spent to build a life on dre dreams woven over a lifetime, to work tow towards reaching goals, planning on creating the th one thing that only a woman can do, to have a life revolve around her child, and then at a time when she was ready to rrest her weary body on a chair to
rock her to comfort, the earth under her rocked and shook to pitch her headlong into an abyss of total anguish and gloom. The issue of body image became the third most common adolescent problems by the mid-80s. First it was anorexia, bulimia in females, and then now bigorexia in men by adding steroids and high protein, extreme and lethal diets to the selfdestruction arsenal. Various industries are prospering at the cost of young lives, be it the fashion and apparel industry, or the food, diet and fitness industry, or even the counseling and rehabilitation industry. While all have a place in this world, the interpretation, comprehension, and absorption of any or all is completely unpredictable and even unmanageable. Not even psychological counselling on its own can guarantee safe landing for us girls and women. Education of the right kind has to start in the formative years. The manufacture of Barbie dolls will never stop. Zero size will continue to be put high up on the pedestal. Judgments and comparisons will continue to be a way of life. But if the right values are imparted and imbibed at the right time, the intellect will learn to distinguish between right and wrong, good and bad, healthy and unhealthy with much greater ease. We will have the armour of values to protect and guide us. Ancient scriptures have propounded ways to understand our real selves, have defined ways to preserve our very being, and live a life of honesty and truth. All that we need to do is source it out and make that effort to teach our young, teach the ones who are in that quagmire of despondency and know that there is an acceptable way to resolve the issue of the body and self. Faith, patience, hope and dynamism of action will create that inner transformation needed to live a happy, healthy and a purposeful life.

THE SECRET TO A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP IS TREATING OTHERS AS YOU WOULD WISH THEM TO DO UNTO YOU, SAYS DR. NADA AL AJMI

t is unfortunate that many people focus on the worst in others. If an error is committed, one is judged as rude or not trustworthy. The fact remains, that you will always be judged the same way as you judge others. This provision stems from seeing the situation through the eyes of anger and fear. If we change the equation and start to search and focus on what is the best in people with a positive perspective, we will attract more positive people to ourselves; people who deal with us honestly and transparently. The best solution for the application of this equation is to find positive justifications for the mistakes of others. Most of the mistakes made by people are due to lack of perception and not intentional. So stop taking things personally. A few people really intend to hurt others on purpose. When looking for the good in people, they will show you their best and you’ll see more good in your life. If you are faced with the few who intend to hurt you repeatedly, do not judge them, but change your path in life from them, and wish them well. Do not allow any person or any situation to make you feel pain and frustration. The secret to a healthy relationship is treating others as you would wish them to do unto you. Negative ideas have devastating impacts and they take away your vitality, enthusiasm, strength, wisdom, your good, and it may control your subconscious
mind and cause you mental and physical illnesses. So protect yourself from swallowing the poison of ‘judging others,’ and remember that your thoughts are your own responsibility. Any thought or judgment on others bounces back to you. When you understand this law you will be keen to think, feel and behave positively towards others, and then all the same will return positively to you. If anyone injures or deceives others, it is in fact cheating and deceiving himself and his feelings of guilt and loss will bring inevitable loss in another ways and at other times. Do not allow your thoughts to analyse the behaviour of people and circumstances around you and take it personally. And note your actions consciously and do not allow your reaction to life circumstances that takes away from you peace and tranquility. One of the practical ways to create healthy relationships, which is scientifically proven, is to repeat in our morning and evening prayers and meditation that we decide to keep love, peace and tranquility in our thinking, talking and dealings with others. That we forgive any criticism or backbiting directed to us. Make a pact to remind ourselves at any time we get triggered to react negatively to a situation that man cannot blame or change anyone but himself. Thus decide to act on the principle of tranquility, health and peace inherent in us.

YOUR HEALTH Q. I have been having thyroid problems since the last five years. I am 33 years old and got married three months back. Even before I was married, I used to have irregular periods; I would mostly start bleeding 10 days after my normal periods. The same things happen even now. I consulted a gynecologist recently as I want to have a baby. She has prescribed folic acid tabs and Duphaston? Is it safe to take Duphaston? A. It is safe to take Duphaston. However, you should do an ultrasound on day 12 of the cycle to check whether you are ovulating or not and what is your fertile period. If you are not ovulating, you would require tablets like Clomid. All the best! Q. I got married 10 months back and now we are keen to have a baby. My doctor prescribed B-long for three months. My periods are irregular and this tablet is causing too much pain in my lower abdomen. Is it one of the side effects or could I be having another problem? Also, I got my periods three times within one-and-a-half months and the doctor said that it was
due to hormonal changes. Please advise whether I should continue the medicine. A. Since B long is causing a problem, you can stop it. You can inform your doctor regarding this and she /he can advise you something else. Have an ultrasound done on day 12 of the cycle to determine whether you are ovulating or not and what is your most fertile period. Is your husband’s semen report normal? Let me know these, so I can advise you further. Q. I have been married for close to four years and trying for a baby for the past one year. I did not have my periods for two months and a home pregnancy test showed a faint positive line. The doctor confirmed pregnancy. I’m beta Thelassemic minor and have low HB 8-9 and low BP (100-60). My doctor gave me Dubagest 200 vaginal twice, folivate D once, Dulphaston 10mg thrice daily. Is it correct to have so many medicines? A. All these medicines are safe, so you can use them. Also, have a scan done to determine that the fetus is in the uterus and the heart beat is ok. All the best.
Q. I am 35 years old with two kids. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism a few years back and am on 100mcg of Thyrocin. I have also been diagnosed with border line type 2 diabetes. My last period was on July 21, so I visited a gynecologist and she put me on Duphaston 10mg for 10 days after which I had heavy bleeding. Please help. A. If you have not stopped bleeding you can take Cyclokapron or Dicynone twice a day for three days. Also, have a urine test for pregnancy done as you can have continuous bleeding even during pregnancy. Q. My mother is 50 years old and she has been having heavy bleeding lately with intense pain. Please suggest the right treatment. A. She should have an ultrasound done to determine whether she has a fibroid or an ovarian cyst. Also, once the bleeding stops, she should have a Pap smear done.

Set in the elegant Madinat Arena, Madinat Jumeirah, the Splash Rock ‘N’ fashion show reflected a belief that the roots of rock music are always in evidence to cutting edge fashion. The 20 minute power-packed show saw three prominent themes on the catwalk which summed up the season’s key looks and trends, namely ‘School of Rock’, ‘Rock n Soul’ and ‘Rock Royalty’. Exploring the freedom of being young and creating an identity was the ‘School of Rock’ collection which offered silhouettes in preppy overtones, pop brights, bold multi-coloured effects and metallic colour mixes. Slim, cropped trousers with fitted sweaters and flat-knit turtlenecks in a riot of colours were key while simple coats, shift dresses with dropped waistlines, neat shell tops, tunics and tabards with Peter Pan collars were catwalk standouts. Next in line was ‘Rock n Soul’ the perfect combination of high luxury and absolute subtlety, with modern silhouettes in hyper-bright hues. This trend was a journey through the realm of oneself and fashion, best used to achieve an uncomplicated look driven by clean lines, minimal detailing, and an uncomplicated palette of black and white. The androgynous elements
of tailoring mixed with slim silhouettes and oversized tops and sweaters were also showcased on the catwalk. ‘Rock Royalty’ was the manifesto of an achievement being all about glossy satins, lace, sumptuous knits, fur, exotic skins, feathers and gold embellishments are back into the wardrobe with black being the predominant colour. Inspired by the Elizabethan, Baroque, Rococo and Edwardian eras this was the launch of the Splash designer collection with individually designed pieces. The trends combined masculine tailoring with feminine ruffles for a look of decorous glamour and this emerged as a clear winner for occasion wear.

OMANI WOMEN’S FASHION TRENDS 2011 BROUGHT OUT THE SPECTRUM IN MYRIAD CUTS, STYLES AND DESIGNS…
t was a fashion show to remember! Seven talented, upcoming Omani designers showcased each colour of the rainbow in a scintillating event at the Omani Women’s Fashion Trends 2011 organised by Light & Shadow Enterprises at the Majan Ballroom at Al Bustan Palace – A Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Her Highness Sayyida Amal bint Turki Al Said, the guiding light, advisor and brand ambassador of OWFT was the guest of honour. Under her stewardship, OWFT will continue to reach out to a wider audience and cater to a large section of Omani women. Each designer was at her creative best, weaving imagination and creativity with a lot of thought and enterprise to create masterpieces with every colour. rainbow. Attention to detail, vibrant hues, bold designs, pretty embellishments were all used to great effect by the designers. It was a splash of colour as the models walked the ramp to the loud applause of the audience. Abayas, jalabiyas and Western wear made the fashion event vibrant and scintillating in every sense. Wafa and Hazar also used Piaget jewellery and Chopard bags in their collections. In the grand finale, the best garment from each designer depicting each colours of the rainbow was selected and put on auction. The charity OWFT supports this year is the National Association for Cancer Awareness (NACA). It was an event where fashion came alive in different hues, much like the colours of the rainbow! BLOGSPACE
c i t e o P s t h g Thou AL MAR’A INTRODUCES A BLOG FROM THE OMANI BLOGOSPHERE EVERY MONTH… HERE’S A PROFILE OF BLOGGER NASRA AL ADAWI OF WWW. IAMNASRA.BLOGSPOT.COM AND WWW.WRITTENPETALS.BLOGSPOT.COM
Why a blog?
It started as a dream of having a website where I could connect to the world and also be able to archive my poetry. Back then, I could not afford to have a website, so it was a convenient forum to air my thoughts. Blogging provided me with space in the online world almost like a website where I could pen my thoughts. I could receive inputs from the readers and also play with designs in terms of colour and photos.
Purpose of blogging…
It was for the love of poetry… I wanted to preserve my poetic thoughts as much as I could.
The first post…
I cannot remember the exact details of how it felt to blog, but 2004 was the year when my writing started to be organised in an electronic format. Before that I participated mainly in online poetry forums but it did not provide me with ownership as it did with blogging.
Blogging and women?
There are a good number of women bloggers, who write on various topics but I don’t know their number.
Blogging in Oman…
Blogging has come of age in an era of social media where Facebook and Twitter are very popular. Social media provides more platforms to spread the work of a blogger.
What are the main elements in your blogs? Poetry and personal work in terms of my published books and activities related to poetry.
Feedback?
I love receiving feedback from all over the country. I am also happy to have frequent visitors to my blog.
78 NOVEMBER 2011
Taking it offline…
I am able to meet people with similar interests in poetry in Oman and get responses from all over the world. I was also able to get some poetry bloggers to review my work before the publication of my last book, Brave Faces: The Daring Stand against Cancer and also get book reviews after publishing. My blog is also a source of reference, for those who want to know about Omani-English poetry. I am happy to say that the blog has steered a translator in India to translate my work of poetry into Malayalam (a South Indian language).
