TOUCHING LIVES We believe every woman is an inspiration. All you need to do is look around you! There are shining examples. And it’s also these simple, everyday stories that touch our hearts and take our breaths away. You know Al Mar’a is all about women! Mothers, sisters, daughters, wives… the different shades all perfectly blend to make one resilient, confident and incredibly powerful personality. Our endeavour month after month is to bring women of all walks of life into the magazine. For we believe every woman and what she does for herself, her family and the community at large, matters. That’s why for International Women’s Day this month, we have a pot-pourri of stories that celebrate women and their achievements. Our cover story profiles young Omani achievers who have made it BIG in fields of their choice. There’s also Laila Mohsin Nairooz, the GCC’s first woman sailor, a 21-year-old who has attempted to follow her heart and be one-of-a-kind! We at Al Mar’a also took our sights beyond Muscat to bring you the sights from the Women’s Souq at Ibra. It was a wonderful experience, interacting with women who are making a mark with small businesses. A true example of women’s empowerment! Al Mar’a also fondly remembers H.E. Dr. Rajiha bint Abdulamir bin Ali, Minister for Tourism who passed away recently... There are other stories as well… that touch your lives in different ways! Read, enjoy and be enriched! Happy Women’s Day! Until next month, stay cool people!

WHAT A SPECIAL!
I really loved the ‘Wedding Special’ in the February issue of Al Mar’a. It was an exhaustive special and made good reading too. I simply loved the fashion feature on Omani wedding dresses. The excellent backdrop, the scintillating designs and wonderful accessories made it a complete visual treat. I never knew Oman had a number of different wedding dresses. I also enjoyed the features on ‘How to choose the perfect wedding gown’ and ‘beauty regimen for D-Day’. I am going to be a bride in six months and this special will be the perfect guide for me to plan for D-Day! SARAH AL RIYAMI AL KHUWAIR
ALL FOR LOVE
Love was in the air! And Al Mar’a celebrated Valentine’s Day in a very special way. I like the sweet and short takes on love, life and marriage from three of the hottest couples in town. I also showed the Valentine’s Day gift guide to my husband as a broad hint and would you believe it! He got me the lovely necklace from Pure Gold! Your romantic rendezvous also helped me plan a romantic evening. All in all, it was a wonderful Valentine’s Day helped by ideas from Al Mar’a. SHAIMA AL BALUSHI QURUM
SWEET STORY
Chefs Mohammed and Rachida are indeed a ‘sweet’ couple. And what a sweet love story it was! I loved the way Chef Mohammed spoke about his wife. It was very evident that the couples are so much in love. The recipes that followed were also ‘sweet treats’! I replicated them in my kitchen

WONDERFUL READ
The feature on traditional Omani weddings was an interesting read. I’ve been living in Oman for the past ten years but have not attended a single Omani wedding. Your feature not only enlightened me but makes me want to attend one, soon! I did not know there were so many customs, traditions and festivities as part of the traditional Omani wedding. I particularly liked the fact that there is so much involvement from both the parties and it’s truly
a family affair. I hope the Omani wedding stays that way and is not influenced by modernity in the times to come. Looking forward to more such articles. Keep up the good work, Al Mar’a! KIRTI DESAI DARSAIT
BEST OPTION
Yes, it’s time to go off the beaten track and explore new options when it comes to travel. The Al Mar’a Travel feature has now given me a lot of ideas to plan my next travel destination. I think I’ll definitely plan a trip to Namibia! The rugged mountains, long coastlines and expansive deserts beckon. I’m sure it’s going to be a trip of a life-time! CHRISTINA SMITH GHUBRA
FROM A FASHIONISTA
Although I’m a regular reader, this is my first letter to you. Let me first congratulate you on the great job that you’re doing! Last month’s issue was awesome. I had to write in and simply let you guys know. I thoroughly enjoyed the wedding special, especially the traditional bridal wear section. The bridal outfits were extremely beautiful and oh-so colourful! Amal Al Raisi and Badriya Al Zawawi - kudos! In fact, I bought an extra copy of your issue so that I could tear out the pages and file them in my ‘Fashion File’. Please continue to feature such amazing designs in your future issues also. Apart from all this, I also liked reading ‘Blunders @ Work’, ‘Love = Life’, and ‘A World of Your Own’. Keep up the great work guys! MARGARET THOMAS QURUM

Convenience Card In banking news, did you know BankMuscat was the preferred choice for the Ministry of Manpower in distributing the Royal grant announced by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said for beneficiaries under the social security umbrella on the occasion of the 40th National Day celebrations? The Bank distributed pre-paid cards loaded with the amount earmarked for the beneficiaries. The bank then distributed the cards free of charge. A senior BankMuscat official said: “We are happy to be a part of this initiative by distributing pre-paid cards to beneficiaries of the Royal grant. In all, about 25,000 beneficiaries, including men and women, benefited from the Royal grant under this programme. The pre-paid card spells convenience and ease of use.” A novel idea indeed!

A century-and-a-half after the birth of René Lalique, Lalique Parfums pays tribute to the unforgettable visionary with Fleur de Cristal, a floral, fresh and musky fragrance. Created by the Perfumer Raphaël Haury, this fragrance had to reflect René Lalique’s style: infinitely modern. Striking from the very first breath, Calabrian bergamot accompanied by pink peppercorn reveals a luminous freshness. Bringing a radiant touch to the composition, honeyed and sensual Sambac jasmine gradually unfolds like a petal in daylight. At the heart, a bouquet of lily of the valley and stephanotis echoes the jasmine’s fruity vibrations. Crystal radiance, a ray of light, immaculate whiteness: the sun reflects its softness on every petal. Enfolded in musks, this Fleur de Cristal breathes on the skin and, like a seductive whisper, leaves the woody aroma of sandalwood, cashmeran and amber in its wake. A truly elegant signature available at Capital Store.

Engineering a dream
“A
s far as I can remember, I have always wanted to be an engineer. When I was six years old, I asked my parents, ‘Who builds houses?” They said engineers were instrumental for building houses. That was it! I took my studies seriously especially Mathematics so that I could become an engineer.
Dalia Jamil Saleh Al Hassani Senior Radio Planner 3G Nawras
Thankfully, the year I passed out of school, Sultan Qaboos University started admitting girls into its engineering course and I studied electrical engineering and computers. I worked as an electrical engineer for a few months but decided to switch over to the telecom field as I found that there were greater chances for me to excel in that sector. I’ve been working with Nawras for the past five years. I was the first female engineer to join the company. I needed to prove that I was good and that a female engineer is as good if not better than the male engineer. I worked day and night, completely forgot my personal life and within two years, reached the senior engineer position. Currently, our department works at providing radio services for customers; designing costeffective solutions to provide GSM, 3G, WiMax coverage under which we have continuous plans and tasks to complete. We do onsite visits – mountains, towers, high buildings; it is very challenging but nothing stops us. I am proud of the fact that I am also the first Omani female 3G engineer in Oman. My family has been of immense support. My mother is a working woman herself and understands me very well. If I had not been able to do engineering in Oman, they would have sent me abroad so that I could realise my dream. I’d soon like to move from the technical aspect of my job into management. Becoming a manager in a technical division is a challenge. And I am working towards it by taking many management courses. I have set a deadline for this move for next year. Within five years, I hope to see myself as a successful manager. My message to young Omani women is to always follow their dreams. Don’t listen to others when they try to pull you down. Believe that nothing’s impossible and work hard to achieve your goals.”

Perfect shot
“I
did not enter the field of photography by chance. It was the culmination of a longcherished dream. I was not looking for a runof-the-mill career. I wanted to do something different and creative. And I’ve always loved taking photographs. I graduated from the College of Higher Technology with photography as a major. I trained as an assistant lecturer for one semester. Later, I underwent training at Sultan Qaboos University as a press photographer. There are a number of photographers now in Oman and therefore, competition is at its high. But that is however, not a deterrent in following my dreams. I think we are lucky to be living in this era where under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, women have equal rights and equal opportunities. Women have now become active players in the development process taking place in Oman. I believe that through my photographs, I can document the developments taking place in every corner of Oman.” There have been many challenges in the path. But I am lucky to have the support of my parents, colleagues and seniors who have helped me at every step. I may be at the beginning of my career, but I am sure that with patience and determination, I can really go a long way!”

Write Stuff
“W
riting has always been my passion. I write because I like to write and express my views. Sometimes, my views don’t find favour with some people. But I don’t let that bother me much. Because if I concentrated too much on what people would think, then I wouldn’t be able to write at all. I’ve always been a story-teller of sorts; I used to weave stories and tell them to my siblings and family members. They used to be very excited at every story of mine. When I was nine years old, I remember writing in my diary that I wanted to become a journalist. I also remember my friends and siblings mocking me but I’m
glad that things have turned out the way I wanted them to! I still remember being delirious with joy when I got my first byline in the newspaper. Writing makes you explore different vistas. I wrote my book Al Ashiya Laysat Fi Amakinaha (Things are not in place). I took part in a number of local, regional and international writing competitions. I also took part in events in Kuwait, Lebanon, Bahrain and UAE. I also won the Al Sharjah Award for Arab creativity in the novel category.
Huda Al Jahori Writer and journalist
Writing continues to be a source of pleasure to me and something that gives me infinite joy, and hopefully to others as well.”

Different strokes
“M
y interest in drawing goes back to my childhood. I always loved pottering with brushes and paints. My love for colours only grew with time as I began painting more and more.
The brush now shared with me moments of joy, love, depression and pain. It understood me, went deep into my soul and reflected what I felt about things. Through my brush, I could express whatever story I wished to! My strokes too grew and became more mature. I wanted to take it further by honing my skills. I joined one of the studios supervised by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture where I learnt the basics of calligraphy and colours. After a few years, I moved to the Omani Association for Fine Arts that gave me innumerable opportunities to take part in local and international competitions. I also took part in a number of exhibitions, workshops and competitions including Caricature Exhibitions in Oman, Greece and Germany. I also took part in UNESCO exhibition in Paris in addition to the youth galleries in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the UAE. I was also a member of the Sultanate’s delegation taking part in competitions in Jordan, Sharjah and India. I also participated in the sculpture, design and mosaic workshops in Sohar. When I joined Talsam LLC, a company specialising in interior décoration and glass painting; I managed to leave my imprint on Muttrah Souq as I have designed the cultural domes at the souq. I also painted the glass of the Police Academy mosque at Nizwa. This was the fastest achievement as I managed to complete the design in less than two weeks. The academy was running out of time because His Majesty the Sultan was due to visit the academy. I have also been associated with other projects at Muscat International Airport and the Royal Air Force Airport at Thumrait Air Base.

It was a moment of pride when I came second at the Woman and Creativity exhibition, which was held in Bahrain in 2002. I also came first at the youth competition in 2009. In the same year, I came second at the Media Creativity Awards in the category of caricature art.
I believe that if one has the self-confidence, you can achieve anything you want to. That’s has been my guiding principle in life.”

Breaking new ground
“I
was among the second batch of graduates at the college of Sharia and Law (now known as the College of Law). It was an unusual career to choose and it was still ‘novel’ for many in the Sultanate.
After graduation, I joined a law firm to gain the required practical experience and continued there for almost four years. During this period, I became familiar Amira Al Saidi with the laws in Oman.
Public Prosecutor
To join my field of choice, I had to pass many tough written and oral tests. After passing the tests, I received theoretical and practical training for almost two years and I passed out, coming fifth in my batch. I started my career as an assistant public prosecutor and after two years, I was promoted to a public prosecutor. I can say that a combination of many factors helped me achieve my goal. I worked hard, was dedicated and had enough of selfconfidence to pull me through. I cannot discount the role of my family especially my husband who encouraged me to go in for my Masters’ degree so that it would provide a further fillip to my career. At the end, I’d like to say that my career means a lot to me and is not limited to a number of hours put in each day. I receive plenty of opportunities to improve my skills and knowledge and I am happy for that.”
Penning thoughts
“I
am an engineer and that’s my profession. But I am also a poet. Writing comes from the need to express myself. But all these years, I’ve maintained writing as a hobby only.
Studying civil engineering was a good decision. I feel that pursuing literary stuff does not help one to earn a good income. Therefore, many writers are involved in other careers apart from writing. But what I can say is that I am one of those who have reaped the benefits of both interests. I enjoy both of them equally. I don’t exactly remember the first poem I wrote but I do remember a poem I wrote at the age of 18 titled The White Dove. After this, I began writing poems spontaneously and regularly.
I also published a book of poems titled Rodhat in 2006. I also voice my views and opinions on my blog www.ayshaalsaifi.blogspot.com I’d like to thank my family for their complete faith in my ability. My writing is what it is because of their support.”
Aysha Mohammed Al Saifi Engineer and poet
On the news track got from relatives and friends who supported me a lot. I did face a lot of criticism and objections. Some of my colleagues were also not cooperative. Some of them tried to ignore me because I was young. Once, just before reading the news bulletin, I did not get a signal to start. The news headlines appeared on screen. I did not read the first part because I thought I was not on air. I was surprised to see the Al Ghalia Al Hadhrami producer shouting, ‘We are on air!’ News Reader,

began my career in television at the age of 19. I started as a news reporter, learning how to write and read news reports. My first moment on air was a mixed feeling – between fear and joy. I remember I made six mistakes that day. But I still remember my first appearance and the feedback I
But I persisted and worked hard to achieve my goals. And I cannot imagine life without my career. At present, I am pursuing my studies in media as it is closely related to my career. I want to reach the same level of professional newsreaders like Khadija bint Qena of Al Jazeera. I also have plans to present serious political TV programmes and those which focus on social issues.”
Banking on success
I continued getting a number of promotions and finally became a branch manager. I cannot say that the road to becoming a manager was easy. It was strewn with challenges but I managed to convert them into opportunities. I always believe that hard work always leads to good results. I am proud to be part of the growing number of women who occupy important and senior positions in the industry. Ziyoon A. Al Shabibi
Branch Manager, HSBC Muscat City Centre Branch
“I
entered the banking sector while studying. I was doing my diploma in business administration in Bahrain when I trained at a local bank during the summer vacations. After graduation, I joined a bank in Oman as a customer service offer.
Within a short period of time and through hard work, I got a number of promotions. I worked as a cashier for a year and then in 2004 moved to HSBC. I began work there as a cashier but soon shifted to another department. The shift is a routine procedure at HSBC to help people enhance their skills. During my stint at the customer service department, I was keen on reaching a managerial position.

Planning has also helped me reach where I am today. I am a detailed planner and think carefully before taking any step. At the beginning of each year, I make a plan for myself including the goals I should reach that year. Another important factor in my success story is also the belief that credibility, transparency and being true to your customer always yield good results. HSBC’s constant efforts to empower female employees have also played a huge part in my success. I have attended many training programmes that have improved my skills and performances. My family’s support also means a lot to me. My father is my inspiration and my role model as he has always been true to himself and his values. Ultimately I believe in the saying, ‘The challenges that do not kill you, make you stronger’.

Shayma Ahmed Mohammed Al Mughairi is a 16-year-old sand painter. She hails from Oman but currently lives in the UAE. Shayma became interested in the arts right from the time she was in the third grade. Her mother encouraged her and is largely responsible for what she is today. Encouraged by her art teacher, whom she credits for recognising and inspiring her, she has been making waves across the Gulf with her unique sand art. In 2009, she unveiled the new logo for Omantel drawing it using coloured sand on paper. She has also participated in more than 15 exhibitions in the UAE and scooped up more than 22 awards for her work.
Shayma Ahmed Mohammed Al Mughairi Artist
She has also participated in almost 15 exhibitions in the UAE and received invitations to participate in international exhibitions. She managed to win around 22 awards and says, “I look forward to more.” “My family and school have provided me with support at every step. They also make sure that I have enough time during the day to practice. My mother is always with me wherever I go,” she says. More recently, she’s been making waves on the popular TV show, ‘Arab’s Got Talent’, where she amazed the judges by drawing a portrait in less than five minutes. “Initially, it used to take me around one hour to do a single drawing. Now I am able to draw a portrait in less than halfan-hour. But what is sad is that since it’s sand, I cannot keep them. Only the photographs can be keepsakes.” The teenage artist dreams of becoming one of the best artists and to possibly have her own gallery one day. She also wants to do her Master’s in Architecture. Here’s wishing her the very best!

hen she was alive, her doors were open to all. After her death, when we wanted to talk about her life, work and the person who was H.E. Dr Rajiha bint Abdulamir bin Ali, her family agreed without hesitation. We had expected rejection at first… for it’s not easy for a family to talk about the loss of a beloved member who not only meant a lot to them but to the country as well. And that’s how we met H.E. Dr. Rajiha’s husband Murtadha bin Hassan Al Lawati and her son Faisal. In a conversation filled with love and memories, the father-son duo recounted their life with the most beloved person in their lives. She was a wife, mother and minister… and she excelled in all the roles she was destined to play… Murtadha and Faisal tell us how she made a difference in the lives of many…

MURTADHA SAYS… “After graduating from the University of Baghdad in 1972, Rajiha came back to Oman. She began her career as an inspector at the Ministry of Education. It was a big challenge for her as she was the youngest inspector at the Ministry and most of her colleagues were very senior to her. The then Minister of Education, Sheikh Walid bin Zahel Al Hinai changed her responsibility to that of a Mathematics teacher. But here too, she had to teach students who were younger to her. Fortunately, at that time, a United Nations delegation came on a visit of the Sultanate to set up a Statistics Centre. Out of the 50 people who were considered for the post of director of the centre, Rajiha was selected. During this stint, she was invited to an important conference at Beirut. It was her first business trip outside Oman and she was reluctant to go. She asked me for advice; we were engaged at that time but not married as yet. I advised her to pursue her dreams. She met many prominent figures during that trip and most importantly, she was the only Arab woman to attend that meeting held in 1973; a fact which testifies to the importance the Sultanate accorded to women’s empowerment. This meeting was a major turning point in her life and boosted her confidence levels. It was during this time that the Development Council was established in Muscat which was later replaced by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Agriculture, Oil and Minerals. Rajiha was appointed as the director in charge of statistics at the Ministry of Commerce. Later, when the Development Council was reconstituted she became a part of it. We got married soon after. Rajiha visited the United States and came back to become the Director General of Statistics at the Ministry. In 1987, she became the senior undersecretary for planning affairs at the Ministry of Commerce.
26 MARCH 2011
It is interesting to note that before she was appointed as the undersecretary, she was offered the post of Executive Vice-President of the Central Bank of Oman (CBO) with an attractive salary. She declined the offer. She also received another offer to head the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development which was looking for a woman from a GCC country for this post. But she said no to this offer too as she was not interested in leaving the country. In 1999, she decided to do her PhD from Cairo University. But she changed her mind and enrolled at Exeter University in 2000 from where she completed her PhD in ‘Development in Oman’ in 2004. In the 90s she was appointed Undersecretary for Statistics and Information Affairs and continued in this position until 2004 when the Ministry
the news and that there was something important about her. When we all heard the news, we were very happy and proud of her achievement. Even before Rajiha became the Minister of Tourism, she used to share with me her dreams for Oman’s tourism development. She used to say that the arrival of just a thousand visitors would generate 10 job opportunities in the country. She had a great vision for national development and contributed greatly to the drafting of Vision 2020. Under her able leadership, the tourism sector has managed to contribute three per cent to the national GDP though the target planned for 2020 was only two per cent. This happened because of Rajiha’s hard work and devotion to the job. One of her dreams was the Convention and Exhibition Centre, as she perceived this project as a promising opportunity for the tourism sector in the Sultanate. Her last work at the Ministry was her involvement in this promising project.
of Tourism was established and she was appointed Minister by a royal decree.
From the day I proposed to her, I understood that Rajiha was a very intelligent woman and would go a long way in working towards the development of the country. Her selfconfidence shone through and her hard work provided great results. She was not only a successful and committed civil servant but a caring mother and wife as well.”
When the announcement was made, I remember that our family was in different corners of the world. Rajiha was in Beirut, our son was in Britain and our two daughters were in the Netherlands and the US and I was here in Oman. She rang me up from Beirut asking me to listen to
FAISAL SAYS… “It was a heart-breaking moment when she was diagnosed with cancer a year ago. It was at its early stages and timely medical treatment ensured that it was cured. Later when she had gone to Britain on a trip, she decided to have a check-up. Though her
health was looking fine accordng to the tests, the doctor advised her some more advanced tests. It was discovered that the cancer had reached an advanced stage. She did not get upset but was calm on hearing the news. When she returned home, I asked her about the results. She said that the cancer had spread to various parts of the body. She did not have any trace or fear or anguish on her face. I still remember what she told her doctor when she went to Germany for advanced treatment. She said that she would not undergo any kind of treatment that would keep her away from her work. But she finally gave in to pressure from her family and got herself treated in a German hospital. The treatment continued at the Royal Hospital in Oman under the supervision of the German hospital. Twenty-eight days before she passed away, my mother became very tired and was breathing with great difficulty. Later, she was put on artificial respiration and underwent radiation. One of her lungs was completely infected while the other was 90 per cent affected. The disease had taken over. Even though she was in hospital, she would call me up every morning and ask me to bring her work. She was working until the last moment. Such was her dedication to her work. She was more than a mother to us; she was our friend and mentor and always wanted us to be successful in life. When my sister, who is a doctor and studying in the United States wanted to come back and take care of her, she totally rejected the idea saying, ‘You will not succeed in life by sitting beside me; my happiness will be in seeing you do well in your academic life.” H.E. Dr. Rajiha, you will be missed… But your hard work, determination and courage will continue to inspire generations to come. Q (As told to Myssaa Said Al Hinai and Vivas Paul D Karra)

Layla Mohsin Nowrooz holds the distinction of being the first woman sailor in the GCC. Rekha Baala profiles the young Bahraini go-getter who debuted at Sailing Arabia –The Tour in January.

T
hey say appearances are deceptive. How true! At first glance, it was difficult to believe that the girl sitting in front of us is a sailor. And the first woman sailor in the GCC at that! She looks no more than a schoolgirl, what with the short, petite frame and a shy demeanour. But the fact is, 21-year-old Layla Mohsin Nowrooz is the GCC’s first woman sailor! A part of Team GACPindar from Bahrain, Layla is the lone girl among the crew. And a very adept and agile one at that! Captain Ahmed M. R. Al-Rasheed, Layla’s mentor and guide and Consultant – Manpower Development at GAC and Peter Gronberg, the skipper of Team GAC-Pindar regales
us with many stories of Layla’s enthusiasm and willingness to go where no woman in the GCC has gone before! Just that morning, Layla climbed up the 30 metre mast to fix up the wind anometre. Why did she do it? Because that’s where the indefatigable spirit comes from… Proving every time, that a woman can do anything, if she puts her heart and mind to it. Layla only smiles… it is difficult to coax words out of her. It’s not that she doesn’t want to speak; she is too shy to talk of what she has achieved. Little does she know that she is an inspiration to many other young women in the Gulf who want to follow their dreams!

BEING PHYSICAL “Sailing is all about teamwork,” says Layla as she explains why it is important for every team member to play his/ her part well. She received no special training since she was already fit. Jogging, swimming, basketball, volleyball – Layla is definitely the sporty kind. Was she scared? “Not at all,” she says quite amused by the question. We look at the boat moored right behind us and look up at the mast and decide not to prod the subject further.
THE CHALLENGES Sailing Arabia – The Tour was not always an easy run. The team faced good weather at most times but they faced a bit of rough sea in Qatar with 4-5 metre waves splashing water all over. The crew was up for 14-15 hours at a stretch which was draining all their energy. “I was not worried at all because I knew it is important to stay warm. I knew I was in safe hands,” says Layla.

industry. Peter Gronberg was the managing director of the company and had started an academy to train young Bahrainis in the field. Layla was one among them. Peter then formed Team GAC-Pindar and entered the sailing arena. Sailing Arabia – The Tour was around the corner and he desperately needed a Bahraini on the team. Captain Ahmed suggested Layla who had a relationship with the sea and ships but absolutely no experience in sailing. She was very interested and plunged into it purely out of the love of ‘doing something different’. So, in January this year, Layla joined the team to take part in Sailing

Arabia which began in Manama, passed through Doha, Abu Dhabi, Musandam, Mussanah to the sprint down at the finish at The Wave Muscat.
SUPPORT FACTOR Initially, Layla’s father was reluctant to send her out to sea. She was the only girl in the family (she has two brothers) and he was wondering how his daughter could cope being away and at sea, far from home for many days at a stretch. But Layla’s confidence persisted and coupled with Captain Ahmed’s reassurances, her dream was able to take shape.
Layla is currently pursuing her studies in Business Informatics along with her job at GAC. Next in line is the Extreme 40 sailing series where the team will go around the world, participating in nine cities. Currently, Layla is part of the planning and team building process. Will she continue sailing? Would she like to break a record and become the first woman skipper? “Why not?” concludes Layla, leaving us with no doubt that this young girl has set no limits to what she wants to achieve. Along with the ‘Why not?’ Layla adds the clincher, “I can do it!” A strong parting shot from a woman who speaks so little. Now, we understand, Layla prefers to go out there, to the sea and show the world, the stuff women are made of! All we can say is keep the pennants flying high, or should we say, sailing high? Q

Take a SHOPPING BREAK! As the Istanbul Shopping Fest gets underway on March 18, it’s time to shop till you drop. Rekha Baala provides all the enticing details on why this is the best time to visit the city which offers the best of many worlds and now, some great shopping bargains as well!
It’s
perhaps one of the few cities in the world that evokes a sense of cultural, historical and spiritual awe all at the same time in modern and almost surreal settings. That’s Istanbul for you. A city Napoleon Bonaparte described as, “If the world were a single state, Istanbul would be its capital.” Where mosques and museums nestle cheek by jowl with old bazaars, where two continents meet on the Bhosphorus, where rich tradition meets a modern joie de vivre – a city that has it all, fusion, diversity and is in a state of constant transition. There’s so much to the city that meets the eye and appeals to the senses that even a month is too short to discover the cornucopia of delights on offer. It is not easy to uncover the timeless
mystery that is Istanbul. It is a city where, as you discover one facet, many others seem to appear, almost by magic. In Istanbul, you can do all the touristy things and revel in it. And there are cities within cities. Take a tour of the old Sultanahmet area that is home to the Hagia Sophia Museum, the Blue Mosque, the Topkapi Palace, the Hippodrome and the Museum of Islamic art. Once you’re done with those, you can meander through the bylanes of the Egyptian Spice bazaar or the vast and exhaustive Grand Bazaar, a packet of Kestane (roasted chestnuts) and hot Turkish chai (tea) for company peeking into a number of carpet and souvenir shops along the way. Haggling or bargaining is a tradition here, but do it gently and with no argument. The Turks give into a just bargain at most times. If you want to enter a different world altogether, just hop into Asia. All it

FOR WOMEN ONLY! E
very Wednesday morning, at the crack of dawn, the town of Ibra comes alive with the sounds of women’s chatter. The excitement in the air is palpable. It is a day for women and by women as they set up the lively Women’s Souq or Souq Al Hareem as it is known in Arabic. The story goes that the women’s souq at Ibra was established around 1990 (though
different vendors give varying accounts of its origin) as a meeting point for women to sell their wares and in hindsight, contribute to the empowerment of women. There’s a lot of hustle-bustle on the Wednesday we visit the souq. Tourists and locals mill around, taking in what the women have to offer. There is plenty of bargaining and haggling too, but all this is good-natured with the women vendors

approach to business. Women squat on the floor or sit perched on a stool selling their wares. At other places, there are groups of women drinking tea brought in flasks and sharing a joke or two.
The souq is not really structured; almost everything is on sale here; and not necessarily all cater to women’s interests. More than three-fourths of the small area is dedicated to fabrics of all types. It’s a cool February morning and in the little light that streams in, you discover Pakistani cotton, silk with rich embroidery, tons of lace and threads. The effect of these fabrics spread over many stalls is almost psychedelic and you can’t help but stop to ask for a price. “Four rials a metre,” says Zakiya who is manning the stall in her mother’s absence.
Aisha introduces us to the different cosmetics that feature prominently in many stalls in the souq. There’s the normal bukhour (frankincense) too and other indigenously developed fragrances like attar. She has been displaying her stuff at the souq for the past 10 years and loves the ambience and the personal touch the souq offers. Since the customers are women as well, this she finds is a very ‘fun’ way to do business!

We assure Shamsa that all we need is a photograph of her hands at work. She reluctantly agrees and is only assured when she sees the photo on the camera. And she smiles! The sarwal if you don’t know already, is traditional close-fitting trousers worn over a tunic and is a dress typical of the Sharqiyah region. The women’s souq also lends an air of a bazaar. There’s something for everyone like in a street-market. Baby clothes, herbs, dried wheat, shoes, scarves, fragrances, handbags and some very stylish Western dresses too! The prices are reasonable and well within reach of every woman visiting the souq. You can find shaylas (head scarves) for as less as a rial. The women’s souq is not just unique to Ibra. The women tell us that similar souqs happen at Wadi Bani Khalid (on Mondays) and at Samad A’Shan (on Tuesdays) and they frequent those as well. The idea definitely seems to be catching on! By 12:30pm, the women are ready to call it a day. Until next Wednesday when the souq comes alive once again in all its exuberance! And for some others, it’ll be the women’s souq in a nearby town. Business, will go on as usual! Q

IT’S ALL ABOUT
WELL
Y
ou are a woman! So in essence, you are a multi-tasker! If you are a working woman, then you’re certainly running the rat race as well. NESS! marketing professional but has extended her interests to the spa industry as well. Rekha Baala speaks to her on the culmination of her dream and how ‘different’ the Bamboo Spa is in terms of ambience, products and services.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA OF BAMBOO SPA? “This dream took shape in my mind over six years ago. I am a ‘spa person’ through and through. I love visiting spas in the countries I travel to and the idea took root from my fascination for them. I work as a marketing professional and when I mooted the idea to my husband, he took it forward but after a lot of thought and a great deal of planning. I had a dream and I must say that he turned it into reality!”
WHAT WAS THE PLANNING ALL ABOUT? “Our first step was to look for the right concept and the right location. A place that added value and provided the right amount of privacy. We understood that every woman needs her privacy, especially in a spa environment. We also wanted to provide a relaxing and soothing ambience with five-star service. So we appointed a consultant who took us through the process of opening a spa. Finally, we appointed our skilled therapists and an experienced manager who brings in many

years of experience in this field.”
HOW IS BAMBOO SPA DIFFERENT FROM OTHER SPAS? “First of all, our name goes with the theme. We have personalised products that goes with the Bamboo concept. Our products like Kerstin Florian are world-famous and exclusive. Most of them are made up of organic ingredients and are completely natural. For example, our Gold facial is totally made from ‘halal’ ingredients. Again, we have qualified therapists who have undergone training before joining the spa. Our manager is also well-experienced and has worked with top spas in the world. So, in terms of quality, services and products, the Bamboo Spa is really top-class!”
WHAT ABOUT THE PRICES? “Our prices are the most competitive in the industry. Our aim is to always enhance customer satisfaction by offering the best in terms of treatments and services. Our idea is to think more of the results and delighting our guests rather than the revenue. Our treatments are for all women and that’s why we have kept the prices keeping in mind their needs and budgets. We have a facial that costs 25 rials and on the other hand our Caviar Facial costs 140 rials. So we cater to all types of requirements. But our standards when it comes to quality and service remains the same.”
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE SPA CULTURE IN OMAN? “It is good because people are more aware now. The industry is growing. We are trying to change the concept as most spas here combine salon services as well that include make-up, hair, etc. It does not go along with the spa concept. Our main aim is to give the customer an experience she will never forget.”

compress. This ball was typically used on soldiers returning from battle to get immediate responses to inflammation from wounds and injuries. It was also used for treating soreness and pain from tired, aching muscles and joints. This ancient treatment tool has come a long way. The herbal compress is becoming a staple in homes and professional settings around the world. It has many uses and
the effects are amazing! At Bamboo Spa this herbal compress is partnered with Green Tea herbs to bring not only pure relaxation but also to detoxify the body as it is synchronously applied by the therapist to relieve aches and pains. Products: Selection of Bamboo Oils and the use of the Thai Herbal Pound which is filled with herbs, green tea and lemongrass.
Hot Lava Shell Massage The skilful techniques of the therapist together with the use of real shells from the Philippines make it really an ultra-unique treatment that one can experience. The heat comes from inside the lava shells due to a mixture of algae with salt and essential oils. When they are combined inside the shell, it creates a chemical reaction that causes heat for a maximum of two hours. No annoying sound of stones and steamers, all you get is total relaxation! The therapist glides the warm shell onto your back and works out your shoulder blades and loosens up stressed traps for a really ‘wow’ experience. The shells come from tiger-striped clams that once used to be thrown away but are now being recycled as a new massage tool. Products: Choose from any of the aromatic oils especially made for the Spa.
Bamboo Bliss Massage For centuries, bamboo has been a vital part of everyday life throughout South East Asia. Each tool is designed to work on various parts of the body and maximise leverage and gravity with sliding, rolling, kneading, pivoting, levering, tapping and friction techniques. Because the tools cover such a broad area at one time, they afford some of the most effective and enjoyable work imaginable on trouble areas such as neck, shoulders, back and legs. Before being applied to the body, the bamboo tools are warmed with a heating pad. The application of the warm bamboo melts away your tensions while at the same time creating a deeply relaxing and soothing experience. The tools are switched from time to time to maintain that warm bamboo feel.

BEAUTY BUZZ
If you want to bask in the glow of healthy skin, you need to first understand your skin type, says Dr. Fatma O. Ali, CEO, Emirates Medical Centre.
IN THE ‘SKIN’ OF HEALTH! E
veryone loves a healthy and glowing skin! And believe us, it’s not difficult to achieve what you want. All you need is learn how to take care of your skin. Start with a dedicated daily routine. Spend some time with your skin, pamper and appreciate it.
And then follow a three-pronged approach. A good facial skin care routine is simple to follow. It takes just 20 minutes of your time each day. Do it twice a day, once in the morning and then before you go to sleep.
HERE ARE THREE BASIC STEPS THAT WILL ENSURE THE START OF A HEALTHY SKINCARE REGIME.
1CLEANSE
Regular cleansing is important when done properly. Cleansing removes dirt and grime, removes excess oil present on the surface and skin pores and aids the cell renewal process. It would be ideal if you could use water-soluble creams or gels with tepid water or wipe-off lotions.
2 TONE
We all know that cleansing is the first step towards beautiful skin. But cleansing also robs away the protective layer of your skin. A toner helps restore the balance quickly. Take care that you use an alcoholfree toner.
3 MOISTURISE
It is important to use a moisturiser regularly as it is an essential part in having beautiful skin. Moisturisers act as a barrier between our skin and air molecules, preventing water from leaving or maintaining the skin’s natural moisture by not letting the water evaporate from our skin temporarily. They give the skin a smooth, glowing feeling.
BEFORE STARTING ON A SKINCARE REGIME, IT’S IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND WHAT TYPE OF SKIN YOU HAVE. THERE ARE THREE SKIN TYPES; DRY, OILY AND COMBINATION SKIN. HERE’S A LITTLE INFO ON EACH OF THEM THAT WILL DETERMINE YOUR SKINCARE NEEDS. 52 MARCH 2011
• Avoid alcohol-based products as they increase dryness. • Use eye creams from an early age. • Use a sunscreen regularly. You can use a creamy cleanser that will help to remove the dirt. Leave it on before gently wiping it off with cotton wool. You could always splash cold water onto your face to clean and refresh your skin. A thick cream moisturiser is an absolute must!
COMBINATION SKIN This is the most common of all skin types. Combination skin is normal skin with a few dry patches and a few oily patches. The cheeks are usually dry and the oiliness is usually on the T-zone. After a wash, some areas feel dry and some smooth.
OILY SKIN Puberty and hormonal changes normally lead to oily skin and in turn pores and acne. Oil skin feels very greasy and the texture is very often thick and coarse. It is characterised by large, visible pores and the skin often breaks out into spots. After a wash, oily skin looks normal, but in course of time reverts to the original state. The only upside is that people with oily skin only tend to develop wrinkles when they are much older. How to care for oily skin • Use only skincare products specific to oily skin. • Avoid excessive cleansing as this stimulates the fat glands. • Try and treat acne immediately to avoid further complications. • Wear an oil-free sunscreen to protect from harsh sunlight.
You can always begin with a gentle, foaming facial wash to remove dirt and oil. Soak cotton wool in lotion and gently sweep over skin to refresh it. Choose a light moisturiser, allow it to sink and then absorb the excess with a tissue.
DRY SKIN
How to care for combination skin • Avoid soaps as these will cause more dryness and stimulation of the fat glands. • Use a moisturiser on the dry areas and a light cream on the oily parts. • Try products that give you a refreshing feeling. • Do not forget your sunscreen before you leave the house.
Dry skin always has a low level of sebum and is sensitive. The skin often wears a parched look because of its inability to retain moisture. It often feels ‘tight’ and uncomfortable after washing unless you moisturise it regularly. Chapping and cracking are signs of extremely dry and dehydrated skin.
Use a foaming facial wash in the mornings to cleanse your skin. This will help prevent blackheads. In the evening use a cream cleanser to soothe your dry areas. Use a strong astringent for oily areas and a mild skin freshener for dry areas. Use moisturiser on your face.
How to care for dry skin • Do not use soap, only neutral pH products to cleanse your skin. • Liberally apply moisturiser in dry areas. Use a concentrated one for the night.
The key to good and healthy skin is understanding what it requires. Then, all it takes is a little effort on your part. Ultimately, we all know, if we look good, we feel GOOD!

Then, participants stood back to watch a pro in action – Trick Shot specialist, Jeremy Dale who had more than a few pointers for the new, Ivy League of golfers. CEOs also benefited from a plethora of business opportunities and the event opened up new worlds of opportunity for the country’s leading brands as well, showcasing them to the cream of the corporate crop for maximum mileage and reach. And, as the evening set in, the CEOs got ready to glam it up for a glittering soiree under the stars. LIFE, ETC
SECRETS OF SUCCESS S
Resentment and jealousy towards successful people make no difference to them. But they do make a difference to how successful you will be, says Dr. Nada Al Ajmi.
ome people look at other people’s success with resentment, jealousy and envy. You have to realise that if you view successful people as bad in any way, shape or form, then you can never be successful. How can you be something you despise?
When you witness the resentment and anger that many have towards successful people, as if they believe that successful people took all the opportunities, so there is none left for them, one remembers the perfect scenario of people who play the role of the victim. Remember that all the resentments and jealousy make no difference to the happiness and the achievements of successful people, but they make all the difference to your happiness and success. Every negative thought and opinion that enters your mind can be detrimental to your happiness and success. As much as the idea is simple, it is difficult to implement. It is easy to fall into the trap of negative thinking and passing judgment that people who achieve success are there just because they are ‘lucky’, or‘ they stepped on others’. However the moment such negative energy runs through you, observe it and train yourself to refocus on more supportive thoughts. Try to associate characteristics such as ‘positive’, ‘reliable’, ‘focused’, ‘determined’, ‘persistent’, ‘hardworking’, ‘energetic’, ‘good with people’, and an ‘expert in their field’, to the reasons why such people are successful. Repeat to yourself “if they have done it then I can do it!”. Successful people look at other successful people as a means to motivate themselves, and as models to learn from. The fact remains; resenting successful people is one of the surest ways to stay where we are. Instead of resenting them, let us practise admiring people who are more successful than us. Let us practise blessing them and loving them. Bless that which you want. If you see a person with a beautiful family, bless them. If you see a gorgeous home, bless that home. If you see a person with a successful career, bless that that person’s achievement.
(Dr Nada Al Ajmi is Assistant Professor, Sultan Qaboos University, Certified Trainer – Springboard Women’s Development and Life Coach – Aspire Training and Consultancy. You can write to her at life-almara@umsoman.com)
The point is that if you resent what people have, in any way, shape, or form, you can never have it. Start practising from today. Send a note or an e-mail to someone you know who is highly successful, telling them how much you admire and honour them for their achievements and tell yourself, that you are going to be one of these successful people, and if you already are, you will achieve even more… the sky is the limit and life is full of abundance enough for you and many more! Where: Maraya Muscat, Al Sarooj Complex What: Kerastase Chronologiste, a revolutionary and luxury treatment for your hair! What’s it all about: Caviar for your hair! Day after day, your hair endures the damaging effects of time. Hair becomes dry and weakens induced by ultraviolet rays, repeated colour, treatments and pollution. To beat this, La Recherche Avancee L’Oreal sought inspiration in the unique revitalising properties of caviar to create an exceptional care treatment.
How it works: Each Chronologiste kit comes with two components; the caviar pearls and a mask containing hydrating ceramides and Vitamin E. At the salon, they’re mixed together before application. The mix is worked through justshampooed hair from root to tips and massaged gently. It’s left on for 10 minutes and rinsed off as usual. You can then style your hair normally. The Mimetic Caviar Concentrate is naturally rich in essential amino acids, proteins, fatty acids, trace elements and iodine. Caviar promotes the restructuring and the revitalising of both skin and hair.
Our verdict: Absolutely fabulous! You could choose from two kinds of treatments – The Chronologiste Ritual which is 30 minutes of escape or the Chronologiste Ultra-ritual that is 50 minutes of deep relaxation. The end result? Hair is left incredibly soft, supple and shiny; the hair fibre is deeply nourished and strengthened and the scalp is regenerated and hydrated. After a few sessions at the salon, you can continue the pampering at home as well.

lectronic mail or e-mail is the communication of choice in today’s world. Make that a real necessity. It has become more like face-to-face communication with the response quick and therefore, action you’d like to take, immediate! The number of e-mail users worldwide is expected to cross 2.14 billion by 2014. This means, e-mail has become a part of your personal and professional image as much as the clothes you wear or the handshake you offer. At the workplace, e-mail has become a traditional form of business communication. It is
Time to ‘fess up! We give you some of the worst e-mail mistakes you could make (sometimes without realising it!) and how to avoid them!
SUBJECT MATTER
Let’s begin with the subject heading. If you leave it empty, your communication actually starts off on an empty note. Remember, when a person receives an e-mail your eyes automatically move to the subject line. Make your subject line short and to the point. Let it be captivating enough (not dramatic though!) to make the reader go through the e-mail at once. Multiple exclamations in the subject line are an absolute no-no!
Simple e-mail mistakes can turn out to be costly at work. So, understand the common e-mail faux pas you could make… before writing and sending them!
The Art of
E-m il probably the quickest and easiest way to send and receive messages, ideas and information. But electronic mail at the workplace can be a tricky thing too! With a lot of casual e-mails being sent, it’s important to distinguish between formal and casual writing styles. Proper e-mail etiquette is necessary to create a positive image of yourself at the workplace and if you fail in it, it can cost you your reputation and in extreme cases, even your job! So have you been guilty of improper e-mail etiquette?
NOT A CAPITAL IDEA
It’s not a bright idea to use capital letters in your mails. It is loud, insulting and rude! Typing in capitals is the digital equivalent of shouting out at someone. On the other extreme, do not type all your correspondence in lower case. This is a simple grammar rule you need to follow.
ATTACH LESS
If you are attaching files or pictures over one megabyte, you are pushing the e-mail limit. Remember, not all people have those high-speed connections or super-sized inboxes. If your receiver must have access to large pictures or
files, send them a website link from where they can download what they require at leisure or when they have time. This will keep inboxes from getting clogged.
FLASH FORWARDS
Don’t forward e-mails to all unless it is required or necessary. Often, we tend to forward those we think are interesting e-mails in a flash, forgetting that there will be people to whom they hold no value at all. Ditto with chain e-mails that are annoying. Not all will appreciate the poem, the story or the quotes you like.
RAPID REPLIES
Use the ‘Reply All’ button with a lot of caution. If you’ve written something in the mail that is meant only for the person whom you intended it for, pressing ‘Reply All’ can ruin your relationship with your other colleagues or even your boss! Stop being lazy and write individual replies if it is necessary.
REIN IN THE EMOTIONS
Read your e-mails carefully before sending them. Sometimes, we respond to an e-mail in an angry or agitated state and repent after we press the ‘Send’ button. Remember, that recall buttons do not often work and you might have ended up making a big mistake by sending that mail. The best way is to write an e-mail draft and review it a few times before sending.
LONG AND SHORT OF IT
Remember that writing an e-mail is not like writing a story. Keep your message short. Use very few paragraphs and sentences should be made up of just a few words. If you have a lot to convey, it’s advisable to pick up the phone and call for a meeting.
NO RESPONSE
Try and reply to every work-related e-mail within 24 hours of receiving it. Being silent for days is not good communication. If there is a delay, do apologise and explain the reason why. E-mail etiquette or Net etiquette is an important part of modern day communication. So follow the rules for a smooth and hassle-free work life! Q

WELL-BEING
I’m Every Woman!
A woman’s heart resembles a bottomless pit. It can hold many a person, many a responsibility, and plenty of soothing balm, says Dr. Prema Seshadri.
I
(Dr. Prema Sheshadri is a psychologist, writer and entrepreneur)
have come to the firm conclusion that women have the propensity to be the most beautiful creation on earth. They have all the ingredients to be one. All that they need to do is to know exactly how to identify those ingredients in themselves, pull them out from within, and measure them right and viola! we have a force to reckon with! You have passed the test if the whole exercise has put that “I’ve eaten up all the cream” smile on your face. If, however, you are looking to a man pass you, then you have truly failed! We need no affirmation from anybody. We have the potential to be great, nay, phenomenal. But like anything else and everything else, it doesn’t come easy. But with the right efforts, come it will! I had a wonderful evening recently in the company of some truly phenomenal women. My first meeting was with two women I have been associated with for a long, long time. For a few moments, I sat back and just observed myself in my inadvertent assessment of them and thinking, wow, look at the way they have grabbed life in their hands over a period of time, looked into every grain of it, believed
62 MARCH 2011
in it, and then put in their all to mould it in a way that would benefit a multitude of humanity. The selflessness, the one-pointed focus, the courage to pick up the cudgels whenever called for, and the sheer inner strength to make a difference, made me feel so reassured that God, indeed, had put me in the right company! My second meeting was with somebody much, much younger than I but somebody so very close to my heart. Human tolerance has a limited shelf life. When a behaviour begins to hurt us in some way or the other, and it doesn’t matter whether its emotional, mental, or physical, we begin to focus more on ourselves than on the other. This is in all actuality an act of survival, which in itself is good and important. But it becomes a limitation when having survived we don’t stretch ourselves once again to embrace the other to help bring about a transformation. That’s how we let go of people and relationships. But looking at this young woman sitting across me, blowing refreshing, vibrant air, I realised the importance of never giving up on anybody. More so on women!
Women are not bound by an ego. They might enjoy the theatrics, but they will come back all ready to listen and willing to learn. This is one of the biggest assets of a woman. Never mistake it for a weakness. It is by far the most powerful tool that a human being can possess. It is indeed a skill to know when to pull out the ego and how to use it. Women are also extraordinarily sensitive. Men and extreme groups often misconstrue this sensitivity to be a sign of fragility. On the contrary, sensitivity is a huge plus to have in the personality kit so long as it’s not of the kind that leads to some easy irritation or upset. A sensitivity that helps to respond positively to the interpersonal environment, that helps us be attuned to the impact of what we say and how we say it to the person at the receiving end, is a huge, huge asset. And women seem so much more equipped with this gift than men are. Use it wisely and well. Women are known to have the memory of an elephant! That is true, indeed. But she has a big heart too; and it is a heart that forgives. She might be hurt, she might feel slighted, but she will ultimately forgive, and when she does, it will be straight from her heart, without deceit or deception. A woman’s heart resembles a bottomless pit. It can hold many a person, many a responsibility, and plenty of soothing balm. A little while ago, my learned friend spoke of a woman’s ability to multi-task. He said that she has the ability not only to conduct several tasks simultaneously but also to do them all with ease and comfort. This is true, indeed. But this innate nature
of women also makes them believe that they are superwomen! And the more we demonstrate this, the more we are expected to take on more and more roles and responsibilities. In the process, not only are we placing an enormous strain on our own selves but also depriving others from assuming more responsibilities themselves. We are strong in the department of giving, we are extraordinarily committed and loyal, but every now and then we need to just take a step back, pause, and assess how we are doing – body and mind. Nurturing ourselves is of utmost importance and that will truly make us into strong, productive members of our societies. We would thus be leaving behind a wonderful legacy for the generations to follow. The following verse from an anonymous poet beautifully captures the true essence of a woman: The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mole, but true beauty in a woman is reflected in her passion that she shows. The beauty of a woman with passing years only grows!Q

Have all your gynaecological queries answered by Dr. Smita Lulla — MBBS, M.D, D.G.O. (Gold Medallist), Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Qurum Clinic, Muscat. The veteran doctor has had advanced training in the UK in Obstetric & Gynaecological Ultra-sonography & Infertility.
I want to get pregnant but have been diagnosed with a thyroid problem. I have been taking Thyronorm 25mg since the last one month. Please advise. You can conceive even with a thyroid problem and on medication. Only, ensure that your thyroid levels are completely normal when you conceive and also monitor your levels regularly throughout pregnancy. The dose of your medication may change during pregnancy. All the best! I am 28 years old. My height is 5.6” and I weight 78 kg. I got married one-and-a-half years back. I wanted to have a baby and hence went to a gynecologist for consultation. I got my TSH and pelvis ultrasound done and my husband got his semen analysis done. His report is fine but my tests conclude 5.7 for thyroid and came out positive for PCOD. I have always had regular periods but weight has been fluctuating regularly. I have been put on Metformim 500mg twice a day, Letoval 2.5 from day two to day six and Thyronorm for Thyroid. I have started exercising for 30 minutes in the morning before I leave for office and 30 minutes in the evening. Also I get migraine regularly and also have issues with my
66 MARCH 2011
blood pressure. Please help me. Yes, you do have many issues to be solved, but I am sure you would conceive. Losing weight is not easy, but if you are persistent in your diet and exercise, you can! PCOD is associated with infrequent ovulation and obesity. Have an ultrasound done on day 10 of the period to determine whether you are ovulating or not. If you are not, you might need medication like Clomid. Also, have your tubes checked whether they are patent or not. All the best! I had a miscarriage around five months back. I have been married for five months now. Both my husband and I took tests and they turned out to be normal. Now, I am on Duphaston. Following this, my period was delayed for a week and after that it was normal. Is there any problem for conceiving? You have not mentioned whether you are ovulating or not. Have an ultrasound done on day 10 of the period to determine your fertile period. If you are not ovulating, you might require some medication like Fertyl for that. You have not mentioned how many weeks you were pregnant when you had the miscarriage. Also, was any cause found for the miscarriage? Have your thyroid hormone- TSH -checked. Let me know all these, so I can advise you further.
I have PCOD. After taking Letrezole 2.5mg, my follicles were 17 mm on the left and 12 mm on the right on the 13th day. Do I have greater chances of having twins? Please help as I already have a girl. PCOD is associated with many small follicles which can suddenly grow and form many follicles. Are you ovulating without Letrezole ? If you are, then avoid it, so that only a single follicle forms. If you do not conceive within three months, try IUI. Have you checked your husband’s semen and your fallopian tubes? I suffer from PCOD. My insulin level is high and so my gynecologist prescribed Bigomet Sr 500 thrice and also Letrezole. Now I am five weeks pregnant but my blood sugar levels are high. What medication should I take? And will I have a healthy baby? It is very important to have a normal blood sugar during pregnancy. If diet alone has not helped, you must start insulin injections. Monitor your sugar levels regularly. All the best!

Want to look ‘prim and proper’ always? Here are some beauty and fashion tips that’ll make you feel and look good, always! • Avoid discomfort while plucking eyebrows by smoothing baby teething gel over the area to numb the pain. • Before going to bed, after brushing your teeth, brush your lips as well. Then apply lip balm. The brushing removes dead and dry skin and moisturises them. • For brittle nails, massage cod liver oil that is rich in Vitamin A into cuticles and nails. They will become stronger. • For puffy eyes, soak two teabags, then place them in the freezer for a few minutes. Place on eyes and relax. • For an instant facelift, apply egg white on your skin. Leave on for about 10 minutes and rinse off. Your skin will be tighter and appear firmer. • Get more life out of your mascara by soaking it a mug of water before use.
Being ‘the’ perfect parent is not easy. But these tips will definitely help when it comes to managing children… • Help the kids get into a relaxing bedtime routine by giving them a warm bath or reading to them. • Remove chewing gum from your child’s hair by dabbing with a cloth soaked with eucalyptus oil. It should come out without tears. • While eating out with the kids, keep paper, crayons or pens in your purse at all times. This will prevent kids from becoming bored. • Make school lunches more fun by using a cooking cutter to cut sandwiches into shape. • When giving distasteful medicine to young children, first run an ice cube over their tongue, this temporarily freezes the taste buds.
• When bathing a baby, put a flannel or small hand towel in the bottom of the bath to prevent slipping.
• Remove band aids from a child’s skin without tears is easy if you soak a piece of cotton wool in baby oil and rub over the tape. Samira Al Kiyumi Qurum Some important tips that’ll make things in and around the home… • Remove paint smells from a newly painted house by leaving an onion cut into half in the rooms. • Avoid paint splattering on the window panes by coating pane with undiluted liquid detergent and allowing to dry for a day before painting. If it splatters, wiping off will be easy. Rahima Al Kindy Ghubra Have young children at home? Here’s how you can child-proof and make rooms really safe…
• Put a piece of red electrical tape on the hot water taps so smaller children can easily identify which is hot. • Do not leave electrical cords hanging in a position where a small child could pull the item down on top of them. • Check electrical cords and plugs regularly for damage and wear and replace or repair if necessary. • Instead of replacing a carpet that
has lost its lustre, consider dyeing it. This is suitable for both wool and nylon. • To remove wallpaper add a good tablespoonful of baking soda to a bucketful of water or hot water containing vinegar. Dip a paint roller or large sponge into the solution and soak the paper thoroughly. After a couple of applications the wallpaper should peel off easily. • For squeaky floorboards, use talcum powder in the cracks between floorboards to stop squeaks. Fix loose floorboards that squeak with a hammer and use a nail punch to drive down nails. If this doesn’t work, drill holes next to the nails and fix boards with counter-sunk headscrews. • Loosen tight screws in old wood by dripping a little vinegar on their heads. When the vinegar penetrates the thread they will be easier to unscrew. Sarah Roberts Qurum

ood FIESTA The Oman Food Festival at Muscat Festival 2011 was a gastronomic delight. Rana Alawneh reports.

F
ood, as we all know, is an inherent part of any culture. Food brings people together in a spirit of camaraderie and bonhomie. And that’s exactly what the Oman Food Festival, as part of Muscat Festival 2011 provided visitors – a fun-filled ‘food’ experience that will be remembered for a long time to come. The ten-day festival was a joint collaboration between the Muscat Festival Organising Committee, Muscat Municipality and Oman Tourism College with able support from the Chefs Guild and prominent five-star hotels in Muscat. It was a welcome introduction to the annual Muscat Festival and will hopefully continue to be a highlight in the years to come. The festival courtyard was set up beside the lake in the picturesque environs of Qurum Natural Park. The main areas
included the Omani fine dining area, Omani food takeaway corner and stalls set up by the five-star hotels. A ‘live’ kitchen with demonstrations also drew huge crowds. Throwing light on the interesting and refreshing concept that debuted at Muscat Festival 2011, Malik Al Hinai, member, organising committee, Muscat Festival said: “It is an event that is being organised for the first time, bringing together hotels and training colleges in Muscat. It will also hopefully promote jobs in the hospitality sector. The food festival aspires to establish, preserve and document a world-class menu that reflects the vitality of food from all over the world.”
“There is no sincerer love than the love of food.” – George Bernard Shaw

CUISINE
The Oman Food Festival played a prominent role in promoting traditional Omani dishes. There were unique fusion dishes too, influenced by the cuisines of India, Iran, Zanzibar and others. The Omani food menu included a number of appetising dishes and included refreshing soups, starters, sumptuous main courses and delectable desserts. Innovation is fun when it comes to food. Chef Issa Al Lamki, well-known in Muscat for bringing in new elements and variations to traditional Omani cuisine enthralled the vistors’ taste buds with some special dishes. And he put up a good show too! His cooking skills were telecast on Oman TV’s ‘Here’s Oman’ show. His lively and interactive approach and friendly banter attracted a large number of people who were curious to know more about his kind of cuisine. “My aim was not only to educate people on the ingredients, elements and the cooking process of Omani cuisine but also provide an entertaining twist as well. I always strive to make my own recipes, while keeping the Omani element in mind,” said Chef Issa. An important part of the Oman Food Festival was also the participation of the Oman Tourism College. The students from the institution made use of the opportunity to learn various aspects of the hospitality business. Ten students participated in the Omani cuisine section, 12 in customer service while six girls worked in customer service. “At the Oman Food Festival, students were able to get a hands-on experience in dealing with different sections of the society and the training will hold them in good stead when they join restaurants and hotels after graduation,” said Asim Al Maimani, a trainer at OTC’s Food & Beverage Department. The students were also enthusiastic and upbeat
78 MARCH 2011
about their scope of work. “It has been a wonderful experience. The Oman Food Festival has allowed me to enhance my skills,” said Sallamah Eid Abdullah, a senior student at OTC. Her colleague, Mahfouza Al Habsiyah also echoed the same thoughts. “At the festival, we were lucky to meet so many different people and though we had challenges, I can proudly say that we could serve all visitors efficiently.”
The Omani food menu included a number of appetising dishes and included refreshing soups, starters, sumptuous main courses and delectable desserts.
The participation of the five-star hotels also brought in an international flavour to the festival. The inaugural day brought in ethnic Moroccan dishes from Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa while the other days featured French delicacies by chefs from Al Bustan Palace InterContinental Muscat, Mexican cuisine by InterContinental Muscat, Italian fare from the Grand Hyatt Muscat with an Indian wrap-up from the Al Nahda Resort & Spa.
The Omani Food Festival was a ‘scrumptious and mouth-watering’ addition to Muscat Festival. And hopefully, a precursor of better things to come in the future! Q
STARGAZING
ARIES - You often find that you need to search your heart and then talk about how you feel. Now you may feel more able to handle the emotions that are arising, and to say what you have to say, which will bring healing. If you have the courage to express what you are now experiencing, a lot of minor issues will clear up very quickly. It’s an excellent period for gaining more control over your career and for proving yourself competent. TAURUS - Your poise and gracious nature serve you well now, Taurus. The best thing you can do now is spend time around other people. Go to a party or other social gathering. It is bound to be a resounding success as you radiate warmth and energy and people respond in kind. Allow everyone the pleasure of basking in your glow. Others find you easy to be around, even inspiring and energising, and are attracted to your assertiveness and courage.
What the
stars foretell...
GEMINI - Relationship dynamics and negotiations are much improved this month, dear Gemini. Nevertheless, there is much activity and concern in the areas of shared finances and personal matters. It’s an excellent period for resolving to clear up debts and for getting started on a new and improved financial plan. Special attention to and from a partner is in focus, and flattery will get you everywhere if you use it wisely. CANCER - You need others’ cooperation in order to achieve your goals. Close relationships and partnerships are fired up and demanding. Love requires work and heaps of understanding this month. It would be wise to be especially clear when it comes to communicating with friends, family, romantic partners, and children. Important connections can be made, and possible travel opportunities can come through your work. LEO - Much will be expected of you at the office, but you will persevere and meet all deadlines and objectives. Love is sweet, exciting, and a bit surreal this month. You’ve learned much about your love life through trial and error, and now you’re in a much wiser position. You’re entering a cycle, of decreased stress and increased bravery. Your credibility is important at this time of the month, and efforts at selfpromotion might be made now. VIRGO - Improved decision making regarding home and family is with you this month. Those of you considering moving or renovating can more easily come to a decision and an agreement with others. While discipline is required when it comes to managing your income, increased benefits can come through others now. You will experience a sense of renewal and reinvigoration with regards to your ability to express yourself spontaneously and creatively. LIBRA - You may stumble into an unexpected new friendship, Libra. This could come as the result of a social event or an introduction by a

You will definitely want to stay in touch with this person. SCORPIO - Now is the time to make your life what you want it to be. March is a strong month for personal magnetism and appeal, improved finances, and a new lease on learning endeavours and communications. You are feeling quite confident and brave this month, but do be careful with extravagance. Employment opportunities and expanded work projects will keep you busy. As long as you don’t accept too much on your plate, you’ll have the opportunity to expand your skills set and pocketbook in the process! SAGITTARIUS - Even though you seem content with your career, you’re ready for some change in your life. This is the time to consider joining a group. How about a book club? Or if you’re more actively inclined, sign up with a tennis team or local running club. There are lots of diversions to occupy your mind as well body. The real upside is that you’re likely to make some wonderful new friends. You will be so happy that this happened that you won’t mind the time you spent on it. CAPRICORN - You’re in charge once again this month, and ready to make ground-breaking
changes. Your ability to stand alone is tested, and your confidence in yourself means everything now. You’ve been a little tight-lipped of late, but you want to be heard, and you will be. Your personal life, however, is kept private from mid-month. This is a time when impulse buying is at a peak. You should avoid using credit right now, simply because your spending habits may be excessive and impulsive. AQUARIUS - During the last part of the month you will feel confident and strong. Mars and the Sun will be in your sign, bringing motivation and initiative. You will be active and eager to try new experiences during this time. You will put your unique stamp on projects and work cooperatively on your favourite causes. Neptune in your sign will continue to bring a lack of clarity, but you will be creative and highly in tune with others and social interactions will be light and fun. PISCES - Career matters are busy this month, and it’s a good time to analyse your work and streamline them or improve your skills. There may be increased contact with the public now, or you might experience an increased need to be heard and acknowledged for your intelligence, skills, capabilities, and ideas. Your ability to grasp unusual subject matters and to intuitively understand what others are trying to say will win you some brownie points – and new friends!
