THE ICON IN YOU
Former Skater Peggy Fleming says, “We wanted to be achievers, but being an achiever didn’t mean that you stopped being a woman.” Maria Sharapova echoes these exact sentiments when she says, “I’m just like every other girl who likes to shop, likes to look good, likes to spend time with friends.” So what sets these people apart from the rest? Nothing really, in the sense that they are all ordinary people who have made extraordinary achievements. Most achievers are people who have made a deep dedication to pursuing a particular goal. That dedication takes a tremendous amount of effort. Maria has also been quoted as saying, “I’m not the next anyone, I’m the first Maria Sharapova.” So it is the self confidence that sets them apart? Legends are not built in one day. Hard work, dedication, passion these are the hot keys to recognising an icon. Be it sportspeople like Maria Sharapova or cars like the Rolls Royce. Today, Maria is the face of brands such as Tag Heuer, so much so that she is a brand in herself. She may not be a next anyone, but there are dozens of us out there wanting to be like her. And, there are hundreds out there who would kill to own a Rolls Royce. It takes hours of practice for Maria to perfect her serve. It takes weeks of hard labour to roll out the perfect car. Every tiny detail is looked at, from the tiny nut to the big engine. If you were to visit the Goodwood factory, you will see that they are not just doing the job assigned to them. They are working there because they love what they do. Their passion for their vocation is what makes the difference. They won’t be as famous as Maria Sharapova is. But they will always be icons in their own right! Because, just like Maria, who is out on the courts every day doing what she loves best, they are out there in the plant, doing what they love best. So, here’s to finding the icon in us. See you next issue People!

A ADVANTAGE SHARAPOVA
n only child, this 6-year-old was spotted by Martina Navratilova at a Moscow tennis event. It was nothing less than a stroke of luck for a little girl whose family was encouraged to sign her up at the Nick Bolettieri Tennis Academy in Florida. In December 1995, she won a full-time student scholarship and five short years later in November 2000, she won the under-16s Eddie Herr championships. Maria Sharapova’s story is that of a fairy tale. But, no ordinary one! It is a success story of hard work, perseverance and true determination that makes a true champion.
A SPORTS WOMAN, A FASHION ICON, A CELEBRITY DESIGNER, A TRENDSETTER: MARIA SHARAPOVA IS A TRUE STAR, BUT IN HER OWN WORDS “I'M JUST A WOMAN WHO DOES WHAT SHE LOVES DOING BEST. READ MORE IN THIS SIGNATURE EXCLUSIVE.
Says Maria, “I started playing with a racket when I was about four years old. I used to accompany my dad when he played tennis and I quickly showed some enthusiasm in hitting the wall with the racket. I am not sure I was really attracted by the sport itself, more than by spending time with my dad.” Maria’s career has been an exciting roller-coaster on the ‘top seed’ ride. In 2001, at the first WTA tournament Maria became the youngest ever female to reach the final of junior Australian Open. Just two years later, in 2003, she finished the season ranked 32nd in the world. Year 2004 saw her take first grand slam title at Wimbledon at age 17. In only her second appearance at the world's premier lawn tennis tournament ,she beat top seed Serena Williams creating a centre-court sensation. This is what dreams are made of! After her Wimbledon win, Maria's ranking soared to No. 4 making 2005 a record breaking year for the young star. August 2005, she hit the top spot for one week and then Lindsay Davenport reclaimed the title. One month later she reclaimed the No. 1 slot for 6 weeks before Davenport snatched back the tiara. She signed off 2005 with a No. 4 world ranking, but undisputed No.1 Russian tennis star. In 2006, Maria took a second grand slam title at the US Open - finishing the year as world No. 2. But being second best was not exactly what Maria's fate had planned for her. In 2007, she was No. 1 again, for 7 weeks this time – her times at the top kept getting longer and this stretch saw her nudged off the top by Justine Henin. The rest, as they say is history. Since 2007, Maria has been constantly maintaining the top seeds on the ranking list. She maybe a tennis sensation, but this woman, who is responsible for a wave of ‘Maria Mania’, describes herself as just another person doing what she loves doing best. “I am a woman before being a tennis woman. Simply a woman, quite focused on what I do for a living,

ON TIME… “Time allows me to do what I do. I could never be a professional athlete without being able to respect schedules, be on time to catch a flight or to interviews… My parents taught me to always be on time as it shows respect for others. My TAG Heuer watches help me on that and are also fantastic fashion accessories.”
thanks to a real passion for the competition. I just love the game of tennis and cannot imagine my life without it. Winning is my goal and every day I wake up with this goal in mind. I train hard to achieve it. Having won Grand Slams already doesn’t in any way reduce my hunger for winning more.” Challenges are something she thrives on and says that it is difficult to pinpoint a particular moment that she could describe as her toughest challenge ever. “It is very difficult to say as I have had very tough matches against most of the girls and even some easy matches against the top players… It really depends so much on what shape we are in on that very day," Maria says. Maria’s public profile extends beyond tennis, as she has been featured in a number of modelling assignments. She has been a face of many advertisements including those for Nike, Prince and Canon and is the face of TAG Heuer. She also was the most searchedfor athlete on Yahoo! in both 2005 and 2008. Since February 2007, she has been a United Nations Development Programme Goodwill Ambassador, concerned specifically with the Chernobyl Recovery and Development Programme, which she holds close to her heart. “When I became involved with the United Nations Developement Programmme as a goodwill ambassador, they stressed on the urgency to do something in Belarus. As my

family is originally from Gomel, near Chernobyl, I immediately felt the cause was close to my heart and supported the project the best I could. The first three scholarships were awarded in November 2009 and we aim to a total of 12 scholarships by 2012.” So what does she enjoy doing when she is not sweating it out on the tennis court or being a goodwill ambassador? Says Maria, “I enjoy reading a good book, designing, sketching, and spending simple time with my friends and family… just like any other girl my age I think. But most of my time off the courts is still
about training.” And why not, for she says her tennis career “has made me who I am now and I am thankful for every bit of it. It gave me the chance to travel worldwide, to experience different cultures, to meet fantastic people, amazing sponsors such as TAG Heuer. And most importantly, it brought me the most loyal fans I could ever dream of.” So, has she ever thought what she would be doing if she were not a professional tennis player. “I would be finishing my studies at University, studying design, she says. It is this love for design that binds her and TAG Heuer
together. She says, “TAG Heuer and I have built very strong links over the eight years we have been together. (She is the brand ambassador for the watch brand.) It is a relationship I feel comfortable with. TAG Heuer and I, we really share the same values. They are a brand that keeps on reinventing itself, keeps on innovating, keeps on fighting for their position. Also, I will never forget that they have stood by my side even during my medical break. “They have given me the opportunity to design watches and sunglasses. I have learnt so much from these experiences because design has to

ON HOW TO CHOOSE A WATCH “Follow your heart ! Trust your instinct! I would also recommend to think in the long term and not fall for a watch that can only be worn one season. Finding a good compromise between both is key.”
be practical, feasible, and sellable. Working closely with their technical teams brought me to not only think about the looks when designing, but also the technical solutions to make the object become reality.” Maria has, among other products, designed the Formula 1 Lady Ceramic watch for TAG Heuer. According to her the design focus “was about the watch being feminine, glamorous and something I would wear myself. The strong shape actually reflects my personality, not as an athlete, but as a woman.” She adds, “the colours (black and white) have an universal appeal and the materials used are extremely appealing to women: Ceramic is robust and smooth at the same time. I really think the design stands out from other watches, is fashionable yet easy to wear with any outfit.” For Maria, the inspirations for this watch came from a variety of things. “I got inspiration from my life, from the streets, from fashion magazines I read, from fashion shows I get to see. I shared these ideas with TAG Heuer’s design team and they worked on designs and prototypes. After a few further changes and exchanges, we agreed

on the design as you see it today.” So what according to Maria goes into designing a watch? She quips, “A watch is not like a handbag… The utility per se is pretty much always the same. Yes, I did think about the quartz versus the mechanical movement and came back to quartz for the reasons mentioned above. So I really concentrated on the design itself.” Above all, she says she works on designs that can appeal to women in general, not matter where they live or what culture they are from. “I think women around the world share a lot of basic grounds – maybe more than men.
There is some sort of “sisterhood” that crosses boundaries.” More power to sisterhood and more power to trend-setters like Ms Sharapova, who go right out and get what they want; be it the field of sports or otherwise! Ask Maria whether she is a trend-setter and she will tell you that she is honoured to be accorded such a title, but that is not the focus of her life. “I rather concentrate on my tennis during the season. I just wear and design what I like. I give it a bit of thought, and if people like it, then that it is great. But, it is definitely not my obsession!”

‘CURIOUSER AND CURIOUSER’ IT GETS, SAYS DEEPA RAJAN AS SHE EMBARKS ON AN EXCLUSIVE TRAIL TO UNCOVER THE MAGIC BEHIND THE ROLLS-ROYCE MOTOR CARS
A
we means a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder. Awe is also what others feel when they see you being driven around in a Rolls-Royce (RR), especially if that city happens to be London, where even the Queen Mother would not take out her Rolls-Royce, unless it was a special occasion. Imagine my plight (although, there was nothing sorry about it!) when I was picked up by Martin (my guide for the day) in nothing less than the magnificent beast that goes by the name of Rolls-Royce Ghost. As we left Heathrow, I knew my life would never be the same again. Here I was inside a RR, being driven around like one should be in a mode of transportation that could very well be a divine chariot. Having considerably stupefied Londoners and Co, we were on our way to West Sussex, where after a day’s rest I would pay obeisance to the spiritual home of Rolls-Royce. My rest and relaxation time consisted of being pampered in Park House Hotel, which lies on ten glorious acres in Bepton, just outside the West Sussex market town of Midhurst. These are quintessentially charming English countrysides that you have read about in many books. Call me silly, I was actually expecting Mr

Darcy to accidentally bump into me any minute and ‘beg my pardon’; the only slight change being that I was in a Rolls-Royce Phantom (another marvel), being driven to hallowed Goodwood. THE HOME It is very easy to be overwhelmed at the sight of the magnificence around you, strategically hidden by abundant greenery that forms the apt camouflage for a car factory. Did I say car factory? Pardon my insolence. For, the home of Rolls-Royce is anything but a factory. The £65million pad of Rolls Royce has been designed by one of Britain’s most celebrated architects, Sir Nicholas Grimshaw, famous for the Eden Project in Cornwall. The plant, operational since August 2002, was officially opened in January 2003. The most striking thing is the eco-friendly landscaping and the use of environmentallyfriendly production techniques to create a set of contemporary buildings that work in harmony with one another and with their natural setting. Our guide for the day, Marco Jahn, Corporate Communications Officer at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, says, “From the outside the low-rise building is camouflaged by sloping banks,
22
re-using material left over from excavation, and 400,000 newly planted trees and shrubs. This, combined with a sedum living roof and sustainably sourced cedar wood cladding on the buildings makes it difficult to detect where the boundaries lie between the built and the natural environment.” The buildings have been designed to make best use of natural light and to offer the occupants outstanding views of the surrounding countryside. They are carefully orientated around a central courtyard, the main visitor point of entry, which is accessed from a sweeping driveway to the west of the site. As we approached the plant area, I was sincerely hoping that the people at the plant would forgive me for wearing the ‘Oh-mygod, how spiffing!’ look on my face. The manufacturing building, where the RollsRoyces are born, is laid out on a 20mx20m structural grid, with fabricated steel tree columns supporting 8m-diametre roof lights. The building reaches a height of 10m and at the rear, the curve of the roof blends with surrounding fields, and covers the access road for loading and delivery. The manufacturing building is predominantly double height, but
incorporates a number of mezzanine levels. It accommodates The Sir Henry Royce Institute (an academy for apprentices and a centre for technical training); specialist wood and leather workshops, a Surface Finish Centre and a bridge that links the assembly building to the pavilion (where the offices are located) via a first floor restaurant raised on steel supports. Standing on that bridge, you get a generous view of the assembly lines and the work stations for the Phantom and the Ghost. Each car passes through at least 60 pairs of hands. Marco says: “It’s a complex and detailed process as most Phantoms have bespoke additions and Ghost can be highly personalised. One of the most emotive moments is the marriage between the body and powertrain.” Taking us through the leather and wood workshops, Marco explains the workings with almost as much enthusiasm as the people working at it. From the paint, to the detailed wood work and intricately hand-woven leather designs, it is like watching a Picasso unravel before your eyes. The manufacturing plant is one giant easel, with many Picassos, each with a skill unmatched, each with an artistic vision unparalleled. The end result: the most gorgeous
four-wheeled creature that could exist today and this could take anywhere between two weeks to a year depending on the bespoke elements being put in. THE DRAWING BOARD According to Marco, 90 per cent of the RollsRoyces are bespoke. That explains why the RR Bespoke design department always has its hands full. With Bespoke, possibilities are almost endless. One can even have one’s own shade of paint mixed from the potential 45,000 colours and types on offer. Want to colour-match your leather upholstery with your favourite shade of Dior blush or want your initials monogrammed into the headrests, want a matching picnic hamper to go? No sweat! At Rolls-Royce, the ideas are only as limited as your imagination. Gavin Hartley, Interior Design Manager, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, says: “We have done teak floors, tartan fabric interiors for the car and the boot, fitted walking sticks and matching flasks that are bespoke and at the same time practical.” According to Gavin, the whole basis of designing anything is based on Sir Henry Royce’s philosophy, ‘Strive for Perfection. Take the best that exists and make it better. If not, design it.’ “Take for instance the flask we designed,” says Gavin, “We took an existing red-dot winning flask design and adapted it to suit our customer’s requirement.” Apart from requests for using a certain type of fabric or Mother-of-Pearl inlays for the interiors, the other bespoke element that is popular with customers is the clock. Gavin says, “It is often something that people like perosnalised… it is such a focal point in the car. We recently engraved a birthdate on to a clock. It is not something that is too showy and is more of a celebration of the special occasion, which gives the car a personal touch.” As Gavin shares the nuances of bespoke designing with us, he admits that the challenge of it all is to fit everything into its place as if it was always meant to be there. “It should not look like a mess and ill-fitted. We know that customers can buy a car and get it modified elsewhere, but the difference is that we can accommodate all bespoke features (all done at the plant) at the design stage itself and not have someone take it apart and get a squeeze fit done later.” Gavin adds that the difference is noticeable also because everyone involved in the project, from the design team to the execution team, is passionate about it. Given that, is it not difficult to maintain the balance between an artist’s vision and the customer’s whims? “That is something I have never come
CELEBRATING THE SPIRIT The Rolls-Royce would not be complete without this eternally young lady. Yes, we are talking about the Spirit of Ecstasy, the name of the hood ornament on Rolls-Royce cars. Year 2011 marks the centenary of this symbol which depicts a woman leaning forwards with her arms outstretched behind and above her. Billowing cloth runs from her arms to her back, resembling wings. In celebration of this momentous occasion, RollsRoyce Motor Cars has assigned a very special commission. Over the next months, 100 images inspired by the Spirit of Ecstasy will be captured by renowned photographer Rankin. Like Charles Robinson Sykes, the man who crafted the legendary Spirit of Ecstasy flying lady one hundred years ago, Rankin takes inspiration from the beauty and sensuality of the feminine form. Just as Eleanor Velasco Thornton is rumoured to have been Sykes’ muse for the Spirit of Ecstasy, so Rankin has turned to his inspirational wife and model Tuuli Shipster for the first of his 100 portraits. That’s not all. In July, 100 Rolls-Royce motor cars, from 1911 until the present day, were displayed in the Courtyard at Goodwood to commemorate the 100 years. The cars were presented by members of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club, who joined VIPs, media representatives and neighbours from the three local parishes for a day of celebrations. Over 500 guests enjoyed seminars on the production of the Spirit of Ecstasy and Bespoke Design, an exhibition by celebrated photographer Rankin inspired by the Spirit of Ecstasy, a manufacturing plant walkabout, Grand Picnic Lunch and English Afternoon Tea. The celebration concluded with a cavalcade of all 100 cars around the Goodwood Motor Circuit led by a new Phantom Drophead Coupé - a truly historic moment that will be long remembered by everyone who took part first hand or witnessed it. The cars then continued on their journey for a weekend of Club celebrations in the New Forest, concluding with a Concours d’Elegance at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu. The display included the entire Phantom and Ghost families, provided by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.
FOCUS across before. I have always worked within a design area where you had to understand the brand, you put into your creativity and hope that it all sort of works out. As soon as you have someone coming to you with their suggestions, it becomes a different ball game. The people who come to us looking for a bespoke design have already bought into the whole Rolls-Royce ethos and are mindful of that. So, fortunately, we don’t get too many strange requests that we would find hard to fulfill.” Though, Gavin confesses that sometimes certain choices, colour choices in particular, vary according to different regions. “It is all about catering to different tastes – different customers, different parts of the world.” Both Gavin and Marco insist that what makes the Bespoke programme successful is the ability to create a two-way communication that means a lot of back-and-forth between the customer and the Rolls-Royce team. To support this, Gavin gives us a very good analogy. He says: “It is like going to Saville Row to get a suit stitched. You always go through a process wherein questions are asked and various factors taken into consideration before actually getting the suit stitched.” Of course, all requests are filtered to make sure they meet Rolls-Royce’s own build-quality and safety standards. More often than not, a customer gets what he wants. But the team is sure that they won’t compromise on anything that impinges on the safety or interferes with the outer design. “In certain cases we will say we won’t do things. For example, we have been asked to do certain wheel modifications where we have chosen not to do it because it would alter the design of a classic Rolls-Royce,” says Gavin. THE LEGEND The bespoke design team is currently working on a new project and we did try to coerce it out of them, in vain. Knowing the legend that is Rolls-Royce, we know we can expect something as spectacular as the brand itself. What is it that makes you want a Rolls-Royce? Is it the iconic status? Whatever it is, one thing is very clear that you do not want to own a Rolls-Royce unless you have reached a certain point in your life where you can safely say that you have arrived. According to Richard Carter, Director of Global Communications at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, “Our customers are a rarified group of people. They are demanding, they know what they want and are used to getting what they want. They are royalty, actors, politicians and often selfmade, confident go-getters. They like to amass
24
what I like to call ‘the good things in life’. They have a mental checklist, on which there are wonderful homes, jets, art collection, clothes, a yacht and most definitely motor cars.” He adds: “I say motor cars because they treat cars like we treat clothes. It will be a collection of motor cars – each for an occasion. In their stable of cars, will be a Prosche for a day at the races, a Land Rover for hunting, and most definitely a Rolls-Royce for all those significant meetings and soirees.” It is these good things in life that Richard says are Rolls-Royce’s competitors. “Our customers are phenomenal people and there comes a time in their lives when they want to reward themselves for a job well done and it is at times like this that we have to go to these extraordinary individuals and say ‘what better way to reward yourself other than with a RollsRoyce’.” All said and done, the magic is not just the car itself. It is the entire package. “They could be kings, pop stars, busy businessmen/women, but everyone wants to come to the home where the cars are built. We send cars to fetch them. They come here for a whole day, spend time with our team of experts. They leave satisfied having contributed to the birth of something that they can call their own.” He adds, “One thing that distinguishes our customers is that they love motor cars or else they would not be here.” He drives home the point with an interesting anecdote. “A very prominent royal figure came along with his retinue to discuss the details of a car that he was going to buy. He was, of course, all prim and proper during the whole process, as a king should be. Once we had the desired results, we escorted him and his entourage back to his vehicle. We had just about reached the foyer and he stopped and took me aside, asking his retinue to go ahead without him. Then he turned to me, gently caught my arm and asked, ‘Richard, Richard when can I get the car?’ His boyish enthusiasm made me realise then, that it does not matter who the individual is, it is the thrill of being able to design your car and own it that forms the common denominator.” I did not buy a Rolls-Royce that day, but I did experience the magic of it all. And, if luxury means owning the good things in life, then I’d probably skip the jet, the private island in the Bahamas and even the trophy husband and opt for a Rolls-Royce instead.
The writer travelled to Goodwood, courtesy RollsRoyce Motor Cars and Al Jenaibi International Automobiles, which is the authorised dealer for Rolls-Royce in Oman.
EXTENDED PLEASURE We were also among the lucky few to experience the Rolls-Royce Ghost Extended Wheel Base. The Ghost is definitely a driver’s car, but it has been designed to be as enjoyable to drive as it is to be driven in. This goes for the Extended Wheel base too, which houses a twin turbo 6.6-litre V12 engine similar to the Ghost’s. Even though it is 17cm (6.7 inches) longer than the Ghost, the RR engineers have gone to great lengths to ensure it offers the same exceptional driving dynamics. As we were driven across the scenic Goodwood Estate, we hardly put the seemingly endless reserve of power, which effortlessly whisks you from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 5.0 seconds, to use. The interiors are spacious with enough leg room to dance the tango, if you so wish. As is with a Rolls-Royce, the car allows endless possibilities for personalisation making sure that your driving experience is as luxurious as you want it to be.
ARCHITECTURE
CULTURAL GLADIATORS
DIEGO DELLA VALLE, THE PRESIDENT OF TOD'S, THE ITALIAN LUXURY SHOE GROUP, ANSWERS DEEPA RAJAN’S QUESTIONS ON THE COLOSSEUM RESTORATION PROJECT
I
t could not have been a more fitting partnership. Tod's, the Italian luxury shoe group, which has designed many a gladiator sandal in its time, recently stepped in to fund the cost of the restoration of Rome's historic Colosseum. The Colosseum has always been Italy’s most famous tourist attraction, the largest amphitheatre ever built in the Roman Empire and is considered one of its greatest works of engineering and architecture. Construction began in 72AD and was completed in 80AD. It could seat 50,000 spectators and was used for gladiatorial contests, mock sea-battles, executions,
26
animal hunts, and dramas based on classical mythology. Although it remains partially ruined because of repeated damage from devastating earthquakes and stone-robbers, it is an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome at its height. There is now a museum dedicated to Eros on the site, and last summer, a network of subterranean passageways, once used to transport wild animals and gladiators to the area, was opened to the public. The restoration project, which will be carried out in eight stages, has been finalised by the Italian Ministry of Culture, and Diego Della Valle, the president of Tod's Group. This is a project of
patronage, which will not have any economic or advertising/commercial return for the company. In an interview with Signature, Della Valle talks on this initiative that reflects the desire to protect and promote Italian culture, a fundamental resource for companies working in Italy and abroad. What was the driving force behind Tod’s decision to fund this project? “The Tod’s Group is a strong global representative of ‘Made in Italy’ and it is both an honour and a duty to contribute to the support of our country’s image and credibility, as well as its cultural heritage. This involvement, born not only from a civil conviction of participation, affirms the belief that by investing in ‘Made in
Italy’, its skills, traditions and culture, makes the country more competitive and creates more opportunities for people who work there and love its history and traditions.”
the one undertaken by the Group (Tod’s) is one of the ways. I have worked hard to sensitise my colleagues and inspire them to follow me in the patronage and protection of the arts.”
who are proud of our culture and our country, to follow suit. It could mark the beginning of a series of similar initiatives, strengthening our country’s image all over the world.”
What kind of challenges did you face during the whole process? “I honestly have to say that, once the Mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno, called me, proposing that we become part of a pool of Italian entepreneurs who would help restore the Coliseum, I immediately called my brother Andrea. It took us only five minutes to accept the Mayor’s proposal, but we put a condition that Tod’s would take solo charge of the restoration project. Alemanno agreed and after that it was a smooth and swift professional process.
Can we look forward to Tod’s being an active champion in restoration projects around the world, maybe in association with organisations such as the UNESCO? “I am ready and open to every proposal that needs to be evaluated. In any case, we hope that the Colosseum restoration project will encourage other companies and private patrons,
Finally, your personal favourite heritage sites in Italy Italy is such a beautiful country, with art treasures everywhere. I cannot really pick one place. But I do love Pompei, which is so beautiful and it needs our help.”.
“I am glad to say that things are on track and as smooth as we have been hoping. I know there have been polemic discussions on Tod’s intent and reasoning for the donation and renovation, but I really want to stress that in no way will this symbolic monument be used for any commercial or promotional activities, whether exclusive or not. A precise communication strategy to protect the Colosseum’s image as the symbol of Italian culture and history, was drawn up between the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Tod’s Group, and it clearly stipulates that the Amphitheatre will not be used for any commercial or promotional activities that could potentially damage or degrade its image.”
THE PLAN The arches will have restored fornice gate closures The restoration of the northern and southern prospectus The restoration of ambulatory The restoration of the hypogea The retrofit code compliance and implementation of standard equipment The creation and repositioning from internal to an external visitor's service and reception area
Now that it is official, what do you feel will be the most difficult task of it all? “Again, I’d like to say that up to now everything has been so positive and I can be sure that it will be positive in the future as well.” Looking back on the history of restoration projects across the world, what according to you has been the biggest or most significant change? “Frankly, I am not expert enough to judge. Personally, I have taken this step because I deeply love my country.” Do you think that the modern man is getting more and more distant from his culture? In that context, what kind of role do you see the luxury industry playing in increasing their awareness levels? “I don’t think so or at least not the majority. We just have to remind them all how important cultural heritage and roots are. Initiatives as
The Tod's Group is also committed to the creation of a non-profit "Amici del Colosseo" Association, promoting the restoration project and other initiatives, with a social purpose only. This outreach is dedicated mainly towards the youth and elderly in bringing them closer to this monument.
…FIND THE PERFECT SUIT
HOW TO…
Mark Twain was a very wise man. He said clothes make a man. Naked people have little or no influence on society. He was echoing the sentiments of the 21st century code of living where people worry more about the crinkles on the shirt than anything else. We are not complaining! After all it is all about the first impressions you make when you walk into the office, board room, ball room or any other kind of room that can host a social gathering. So, we decided to help you find that perfect suit for all occasions. Just ask yourself these questions and you shall be suit-savy!
The Fabric
Is it the right fabric? Does it really go with the weather? Worsted-wool fabrics are measured by the number of times the yarn has been twisted, ranging from 80 to 220. More the twists, more the lightweight (and expensive) the fabric. This range brings you into the 80s, an excellent three-season option in most climates. Cotton suits can be worn in the spring, summer, and fall. There are even more choices out there like linen suits which are best for summer days
The Buttons
How many buttons do you really want on your suit? Taller men can opt for the three-button jacket, which will reach higher on the chest and could be more comfortable or flattering. The two-button suit is what most men should wear. A man with a shorter torso will appreciate wearing a two-button jacket style. It lengthens your frame, and it has an undeniably classic appeal. The one-button suit is something you should buy only if you’re in a creative job where the environment is less conservative. If you can pull it off, it’s a sleek look.
The Jacket Vent
Double vents are more European and a bit more suave. They make it easier for you to reach into your pockets without having to fold your jacket up. Is modern yet more traditional. You can’t go wrong with a center vent. Ventless jackets are the cleanest in appearance, but they aren’t very convenient.
The Lapel
The Purpose
It is a very important investment for a man, almost as much as the car he drives in. So the purpose is a very important factor. This prevents you from choosing the wrong suit that you eventually won’t feel comfortable wearing, and then leaving it unused without use. If you’re looking for something that you’ll wear to the office often, then keep it dark and classic. If you’re looking for a suit to wear to key special occasions, then black or navy is a safe bet.
The Pleats
Avoid narrow and extra wide and keep it somewhere in the middle. Also consider whether you prefer a notched lapel – which is customary – or a more dramatic peaked version. Classic and conservative, a notched lapel always looks sharp. The peak lapel is a bit more daring and stylish.
It’s really more of a personal choice. Now, heavier men typically need pleated pants for comfort. The pant should taper each leg and the pleats will loosen with the body movement. As a result, they can be flattering for them. But if you can, try to go for non-pleated.
Single or double breasted?
The single breasted suit should be your default choice for both work and play. The double-breasted version is a dashing, continental choice that’s chic, but not for men on the shorter or heavier side as it adds fabric to your midsection. If you’re interested in the doublebreasted jacket, make sure you have a single breasted one in your closet first.
28
Cuffs
Cuffs add weight to the bottom of your pants, helping it to hang properly. They’re better for taller guys, but not for shorter guys because it shortens the silhouette of the legs

It was then he determined that he too will one day experience the wonder of space. Fast Forward to March 1999, Branson registers Virgin Galactic at Companies House in London. Then in September 2004, Branson announces to a packed press conference at the Royal Aeronautical Society, that Virgin will be sponsoring SpaceShipOne’s X Prize flights and that, if successful, Virgin Galactic will finance the design and build of a fleet of commercial spacecraft by Scaled Composites that will

a historic agreement which would see the building of a state-funded US$200mn spaceport on a 27sqm area of land in the southern part of the New Mexico ‘the Land of Enchantment’. Virgin Galactic will establish its headquarters and operate its space flights from Spaceport America, the world’s first purpose built commercial spaceport which is now under construction. Spaceport America will provide cutting edge facilities and a wonderful location for fledgling astronauts to realise their dreams.

At the first roll-out in Mojave it was described as an aviation milestone and for good reason: it is the largest all carbon composite aviation vehicle ever built and the most fuel efficient of its size. It has a unique capability to carry heavy payload (around 35,000lbs) to high altitude (around 50,000ft) and a range of over 2000 nautical miles. Remarkably, for a vehicle of its size, it is also capable of performing high and zero G maneuvers.

The spaceship can be thought of as an air launched glider with a rocket motor and a couple of extra systems for spaceflight. Each passenger gets the same seating position with two large windows. One side window and one overhead, so that, if you don't want to float free in space, and you'd rather just remain in your seat, you still get a great chance to see the view. HEALTH&TRAINING Going to space is no cakewalk. The trip will be intense, exhilarating, and the more that can be simulated beforehand, the better the real thing will be. You will have to go through pre-flight medical checks. There will be three days of preflight preparation, bonding and training onsite at the spaceport. Learning how to make the most of your time in micro-gravity and tips on how to be the most comfortable in macro-gravity will form an important part of your preparation. Your pre-flight preparation will ensure that you are mentally and physically prepared to savour every second of your spaceflight. Basic emergency response training, prescribed by our regulators will be at the forefront. Activities to familiarise you with the spaceflight environment will follow a close second. Everything about your pre-flight and flight experience will be recorded and provided to you to relive the experience and share it with your family and friends.
THE FINAL FRONTIER Training over, you’re suited up and raring to go. The 50,000ft climb is marked with quiet contemplation but there's an air of confidence and eager anticipation. Then the countdown to release, a brief moment of quiet before a wave of unimaginable but controlled power surges through the craft. You are instantly pinned back into your seat, overwhelmed but enthralled by the howl of the rocket motor and the eyewatering acceleration which, as you watch the read-out, has you traveling in a matter of seconds, at almost 2500mph, over three times the speed of sound. As you hurtle through the edges of the atmosphere, the large windows show the cobalt blue sky turning to mauve and indigo and finally to black. You will defy gravity to fly more than 100km above the earth, widely regarded as the start of space, before returning to terra-firma.
THE TICKETS The starting price for flights is US$200,000 with refundable deposits starting from US$20,000. The journey starts from the moment a deposit is paid with membership of perhaps the world's most exclusive club with privileged access to all aspects of the project as it progresses. From Astronaut Forums with Sir Richard Branson on his Caribbean island home or his South African game reserve to opportunities to tour Scaled Composites, upon making such arrangements and relevant authorization, to see for real the new vehicles under development. All our future astronauts of course have VIP invitations to media events to mark major milestones.

Play Time We have probably made it to the hit list of the angry wives club (strictly for those women who don’t like the sport!) for suggesting these holiday spots, but we at Signature believe that when the calling is that of the greens, nothing can stop an avid golfer anyway! Listed here are the five amazing Golf holiday destinations in the world! And don’t you worry, there is enough for the family to do and see, just in case they do tag along…
SCOTLAND If you're looking for a classic, unforgettable golf vacation, consider St. Andrews Links, located on the North East corner of the Fife region, Scotland. Accepted as the birthplace of golf, St. Andrews has been the site of swinging clubs since the early 1400s! The St Andrews Links Trust manages seven golf courses, including the Old Course, host of the 2010 Open Championship, that make up the largest public golf complex in Europe. The Old Course at St. Andrews is considered to be the birthplace of golf, with evidence of play on the links land beside the town dating back to the 1500s. St Andrews is also home to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, one of the most prestigious golf clubs and one of the two rule making authorities of golf until 2004. FAMILY TIME calls for a visit to the St. Andrews Castle, the British Golf Museum, and take the Castle Street which leads into Market Street whose cobbles support the Lammas Market, the oldest surviving medieval market in Scotland. St. Andrews is also an attractive fishing port and a favourite beach resort.

SOUTH AFRICA Yes, Africa! The country boasts an ideal climate for spending time out on the fairways under the bright African sun, and golfers here are blessed for choice. If you enjoy the challenge of a coastal course, there is a stunning selection available; if you prefer playing at altitude, where the ball flies that much further, the selection is just as good. Probably the most famous golf course in South Africa is the Gary Player Country Club at Sun City, home to the Nedbank Golf Challenge that offers the largest first prize of any tournament in the world. There is also the Leopard Creek Country Club, Kruger National Park. There are many other world-class courses that have featured on both the European PGA Tour as well as the local Sunshine Tour, not to mention a wealth of excellent courses besides. FAMILY TIME is all about combining sport with play! You can go on a safari and you can be sure to experience the bushveld fauna -- hippos and giraffes, river crocs and the eponymous leopards.
HAWAII
PORTUGAL
NEW ZEALAND
Hawaii’s lush green mountains and coastal cliffs make it one of the most visually dramatic and unique golf destinations in the world. With a temperate island climate, it's golf season year round on the islands of aloha. Of course, be sure to look into each island's unique golf offerings before selecting. Hawaii's most populous island, Oahu has the most golf courses, mostly along the island's south coast. The second largest of the Hawaiian Islands, Maui is home to Kapalua Golf Resort, which is home to the PGA Tour's Mercedes Championship, while other courses like Wailea Golf Club, Makena and Ka'anapali make for plenty of world class golf on this island alone. We could go on and on….
Enhanced by being on the western edge of the continent, Portugal has retained an aura of mystery that often excites an odd brave tourist. The greatest concentration of Algarve courses are less than an hour away from Faro; there are 25 golf clubs along this particular coastline. Quinta do Lago launched Portugal's reputation as up and running in the holiday resort stakes. It was created to cater for sporty people; it does just that and golf is its paramount attraction. Between Albufeira and Lagos are another half-dozen courses. The Algarve's oldest course, Penina is one of several Portuguese courses designed by Sir Henry Cotton, who, as one of the greatest golfing figures in the 20th century, is to Britain as Robert Trent Jones is to the USA.
New Zealand is becoming a popular golfing destination with its numerous world-class golf courses to choose from, as well as great lodging and resorts. Winner of the 2009 Golf Destination of the Year at the IAGTO Virgin Atlantic Golf Travel awards for Asia and Australasia, New Zeland has some of the most beautiful golf courses in the world that include the Cape Kidnappers Golf Course, located in Hawke's Bay, the Kauri Cliffs Golf Club & Lodge, Carrington Golf Course Maitai Bay Road, and Paraparaumu Golf Club among many others. Mountain vistas, cliff-top ocean views, picturesque valleys, scenic lakes, and deep gorges - these are typical backdrops for many of New Zealand's 400+ golf courses.
FAMILY TIME means island hopping, soaking in the generous sunshine and partying up in the island’s nightlife. It also means visiting Kauai, the fourth largest of the Hawaiian Islands and the oldest geographically, which features some of the most stunning mountain landscape - as well as one of the world's wettest spots, Mount Wai'ale'ale. Jurassic Park was said to have been filmed here.
FAMILY TIME means exploring the old-fashioned charm of Portugal, with its medieval castles and picture-perfect villages. From the ancient university town of Coimbra to Lord Byron's favourite Portuguese haunt, Sintra, the country's proud history can be felt everywhere. It also means kissing the earth of some of the most spectacular beaches such as Cascais and Sagres and paying a visit to the cultural melting pot that is Lisbon.
FAMILY TIME is best enjoyed in the breathtaking scenery, festivals, fantabulous food and magical outdoor experiences. Soak in the Maori culture, go on an appreciation tour of all things cultural including some outta-this-world Kiwi live music and come back awed by the natural splendour that is strewn across this tiny little nation in abundance.
E TURER A N L SIGAVEL TR Sukhothai, Thailand This ranks very high on my most favourite places in the world. It is one of the ancient capitals of Thailand and has numerous temples and derelict buildings spread over a large area. It is possible to hire bicycles and pedal peacefully around the site. Apart from the mesmerising peace, one of my lasting impressions was the magnificence of the huge trees, with no restrictions they had grown to full splendour, stretching out their branches wide - as we may do with our arms - in sheer joy!
Dahab, Egypt A once tiny village on the bay of Aqaba on the Red Sea, this now popular holiday resort has some of the best diving and snorkelling points in the world, with the famous Blue Hole not far away. The fabulous multi-coloured coral reef has so many wonderful fish to see, one almost wishes to stay there and enjoy the underwater garden forever!
Gumusluk, Turkey This was originally a small fishing village and is now a World Heritage Site and conservation area, as the marble floors from ancient temples, lie just below the surface of the turquoise sea just off the coast. With no tall buildings and only one small hotel, this small village boasts at least 18 restaurants, all with wonderful food - the fact that all the locals flood here to eat at weekends during the summer is testament to the taste. My verdict: A most wonderful and relaxing experience.
Ile de Ré, France A small island off the west of France, it is tiny enough to bicycle around and you can stop and have a delicious lunch en route. It has lots of ports, where delicious sea-food can be enjoyed. All in all a very relaxing early-Autumn holiday with lots of very picturesque cottages and buildings. I would call it a real delight!
EVER THE TRAVEL JUNKIE, WE GOT WGO PRESIDENT SALLY SLEEP TO PICK HER FIVE FAVOURITE SPOTS IN THE WORLD…
Kerala, India I recently spent two nights on a houseboat on the backwaters in Kerala and it was one of the most magical holidays – the calm and tranquility that surrounds the whole place makes one realise that this is exactly what the doctor recommended; a pace of life that has to be good for health and for the soul. The picture of daily life balance between the riverbanks and the shores was a very colourful and memorable one.
Experience I have to thank my parents for infecting me with the travel bug. They were always keen to widen their knowledge and believed travel was one of the best ways of achieving this. My first journey overseas was a school trip to Vienna, Austria at the age of 13, which was a huge eye opener and I still vividly remember parts
42
of that holiday. This may well have been what nurtured the travel junkie in me. My husband, John, also loves to travel. His father was in the army and John has travelled and lived overseas as a child, continuing the expat life into adult-hood with numerous overseas postings, which suits us both very much – perhaps the
easiest way to explore the countries where we have lived. I feel very fortunate to have been able to see and experience different parts of the world and hope to do so for many years to come. New places bring a sense of excitement and new learning experiences. I recommend buying a suitcase!

It
takes that ‘extra’ something to truly shine above the rest and Omani women, more so than others, have shown what passion and conviction can help one achieve. And now, it’s time for us to celebrate the women who’ve not only dared to dream but have gone the extra mile to prove their commitment towards serving and enriching their communities and society at large. In October, the Al Mar’a Excellence Awards will felicitate these women who have inspired those around them with their vision and accomplishments. ashion and gym were like oil and water to me. Perhaps, I also used this as a personal excuse as gym fashion was not the most flattering, not just on me but also on everyone else; the shoes were chunky, the clothes baggy and don't even get me started about the sweat! Fast forward to the international tennis courts, where Venus and Serena Williams are designing fun, practical and flattering outfits for tennis enthusiasts everywhere; it’s a fashion parade for Venus, a chance to express herself on the court where thousands of spectators are watching her every move. So why not look great when taking home the cup?
Leading companies like Nike and Reebok are taking note on how to make women feel confident, comfortable and fashionable. Nike has a genius Bra Bar, which helps you choose the support you need. I am also a fan of their Pant Bar: different lengths and cuts to flatter the derrieres. Many brands today have invested in right technology to make the clothes look good and fit better. Take the Easytone range by Reebok, a personal favourite of mine, which apparently helps burn calories just by wearing them. The range has lots of bright colours to choose from and I found the short sleeve tops had intergrated silver weaving to keep my posture intact. If I'm burning calories by just wearing Easytone and continuing with my daily chores, I'm sold! The Nike Dri-Fit clothing line has a special highperformance microfibre polyester fabric that actually pulls sweat away from the body and transports it to the fabric surface - where it evaporates and leaves the skin cool and dry. This is essential for not looking like you are dripping in sweat from a cardio workout and get everyone saying “How does she do it?” It’s all you need for those hot days, and a critical base layer for cold days if you love to ski or like jogging in the crisp winter months. Finally, I will not leave out the fashionistas who want to look good all the time, be it a social event or treadmill time at the gym. For this, I can only recommend Stella McCartney for Adidas. Her

collection has a beautiful range of muted colours of grey and blush and fabrics of breathable mesh with precise draping to make just about any woman look chic at the gym. Now there's a great way to feel great on the inside and outside! Happy work-out folks!

AN ODE TO THE MUSE
‘INSPIRATION AND VISION’ CURRENTLY ON AT THE SALVATORE FERRAGAMO MUSEUM IN FLORENCE, EXPLORES AND IDENTIFIES THE VARIOUS MUSES BEHIND THE BEHIND THE CREATIONS OF ITALIAN FOOTWEAR DESIGNER SALVATORE FERRAGAMO
60
The Oxford English dictionary defines the word inspiration as the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative. Indeed, ask any creative professional – an artist or a fashion designer – and he/she will tell you stories of finding their inspiration in the most unexpected places. A recently opened exhibition entitled “Inspiration and Vision” currently on at the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum in Florence, explores exactly that. It analyses the artistic and constructive inclinations behind the creations of Italian footwear designer Salvatore Ferragamo (1898-1960). It is an ode to the many muses of this magical shoemaker. THE FOUNDATION The Ferragamo Museum has often organised exhibitions that have either rediscovered Ferragamo’s designs or looked at the connections between his works and the film industry through icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Greta Garbo. As enchanting as these
exhibitions were, the best was perhaps yet to come and it has in the form of ‘Inspiration and Vision’.
which are the results it leads to? These are the questions that formed the basis of this exhibition.
What ties the Ibis rubra quills cloak, made in the sixteenth century in Brazil and part of Cosimo II de’ Medici’s collections, on loan from the Museo di Antropologia e Etnologia of Florence, Sano di Pietro’s Nativity dating back to the early fifteenth century, Sonia Delaunay’s illustrations for the book La prose du Transsibérien et de la petite Jehanne de France, on loan from the Biblioteca Nazionale of Florence, and Andy Warhol’s gold leaf shoe designs from the Luigino Rossi Collection of Venice together with Ferragamo’s shoes? The answers can be found by taking a step back in time into the imagination of Salvatore Ferragamo and searching for the sources of his creativity.
There were two times in Ferragamo’s life when the ideal conditions were in place for the processing of the inspiration and vision that would influence the future artist: his arrival in California in the mid-1910s where he became famous as ‘Shoemaker of Dreams’' and where he found his muse in the 1922 discovery of the Pharaoh Tutankhamon’s tomb in Egypt, which offered immense creative potential for film, used by Ferragamo to realise sandals that legendary film-maker Cecil B. De Mille commissioned from him for the leading roles in The Ten Commandments. The other definitive moment was Ferragamo’s return to Italy in 1927, when he decided to settle in Florence, the city that, at that time, was at the heart of the country’s artistic and cultural life. In Florence, Ferragamo drew inspiration from many public and private collections providing an extraordinary

documentation of examples of applied arts; for example Frederick Stibbert Collection as well as Archaeological, Ethnographic and Natural History Collections. Ferragamo was also fascinated by the experiments in materials and colours that avant-garde artists – first and foremost the Futurists, but also Thayaht, Sonia Delaunay, Duchamp and Giò Ponti – were conducting in the same years as Florence was becoming an important cultural epicentre. In all, 255 works of art displayed, including 99 Salvatore Ferragamo shoes dating back to the 1920’s through the end of 1950, along with 156 works of art from public and private collections, not only international but especially Italians and Florentines. THE TIME SPIRIT Ferragamo’s mind was open to the spirit of the time and continued thus throughout his entire career, revealing not only his influences, but also analogies with contemporary artists and designers working in a multitude of different fields, discovering aesthetic and technological solutions that were very similar to those used by Ferragamo. Examples of these analogies include Jacobsen’s famous egg chair, designed the very same year that Ferragamo patented his leather shell sole, a transposition of the chair’s ergonomic shape to the sole of a shoe, and Andy Warhol’s gold leaf shoes, designed in 1956, exactly the same year of Ferragamo’s 18K sandal for the wife of a wealthy magnate. On other occasions, Salvatore Ferragamo’s creations and work became the source of inspiration for his contemporaries, with

whom he often forged fruitful collaborative relationships, as when Lucio Venna designed the advertisements for certain styles, when Pietro Annigoni painted Ferragamo’s portrait, and when Alvaro Monnini designed one of the first silk scarves produced under the Ferragamo label. MILLINERY BY STEPHEN JONES The skilful craftsmanship seen in Ferragamo’s work is paralleled by that in Jones’ creations, although their techniques and the type of accessories differ. They share the same passion for their work, obsession with quality and infinite experimentation with materials, from the most banal to the most unusual, and rigour of form, along with a healthy sense of humour, which has kept each from taking himself too seriously. Inspired by Ferragamo’s creations, Jones chose 30 hats from his archive which have been displayed for the first time in Florence, selecting his pieces based on the central themes of Ferragamo’s style and work. Jones has also designed three new hats which will become part of the Museo Salvatore Ferragamo collection, inspired by the most incredible styles that Ferragamo ever created: the multi-colour wedge sandal designed for Judy Garland in 1938, the F-wedge in kidskin and vinilite of 1947, worn on the runway in Dallas with Christian Dior’s “New Look” collection, and the cage heel, one of the most innovative – and patented – ideas ever to issue from Ferragamo’s ingenious mind. “With this exhibition,” Stephen Jones says, “I had the opportunity to study Salvatore Ferragamo’s work. And what I liked best about him was his jeu d’esprit, his sense of fun and his passion. Like myself, Ferragamo put all his life and work experience into a shoe.”.

Play-Time A lush, tropical paradise. The ultimate escape for vacationers with tons of cash to blow. All in all, a perfect premise for a mind-blowing zombie action game. Amidst the chaos and utter mayhem of a zombie outbreak, four people find themselves somehow immune and it is up to them to protect the rest of the survivors from being infected. Based on an open-world environment and played from a first person perspective, this is as real as it gets. Think: Melee weapons, vehicular customisation and a stamina bar which limits a player from continuously fighting zombies. Other popular zombie games currently in the market are just first/third-person shooters, so we really are pinning all our hopes on this one.

Step into the roles of the elite Marines and experience heart-pounding single player and co-op missions and competitive multiplayer actions ranging across diverse locations from around the globe including Europe, Middle-East and North America. Rumour has it that the game also features a segment based in Oman.
It certainly is the clash of the titans, as the Call of Duty franchise releases its third instalment in the Modern Warfare series (and eighth in the Call of Duty series). The game, which immediately follows the events of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, takes us back to Captain MacTavish, former SAS Captain John Price and Nikolai who are on the run after killing the rogue U.S. Army Lieutenant General Shepard. Continue the epic journey of warfare and bravery and experience new survival modes as well as new playable characters.

A firm favourite among many gamers, Battlefield will soon be out with its eleventh instalment in the series and is a direct sequel to Battlefield 2. This one not only promises fantastic visuals and life-like character animations but will also introduce many gaming elements not seen previously.
Just when we thought things couldn’t get any better, Ubisoft takes it to a whole new level. Said to be the ‘most immersive experience’ till date, Assassin’s Creed Revelations sees Ezio walk in the footsteps of the great Altaïr. Embark on a journey, and a rather perilous one at that, which takes Ezio to the heart of the Ottoman Empire.
More maps, characters and a revolutionary online gameplay further enhances the experience. It has been said that the latest chapter also allows players to ‘manipulate the construct of the Animus and Desmond’s memories’ to help decipher the story further. We certainly can’t wait for this one!

1
Local lingo trumps lingua franca. Even if it’s just a few words and/or salutations, knowing the language really helps.
2
Getting lost isn’t always a bad thing. It just might turn into a “This one time at…” kind of story.
3
No traveller really needs five pairs of shoes. Packing light makes for a hassle-free travel experience.
4
Do you check up the weather report before packing? How about carrying your universal charger? Remember, it’s all in the details.
5
They call it insurance for a reason. Don’t skip travel insurance.
6
Concierges are the Wikipedia of local attractions. From restaurants to local hot spots, they are always happy to help.
7
Location, location, location. Picking a hotel in the heart of the city over one in a far flung location is worth the extra cash.
8
Get savvy about the local culture and lifestyle. What works in Toronto won’t work in Tokyo and vice-versa.
