WORLD ON THE GO We know of this young travel buff for whom ‘going places’ is a part of everyday life. By profession, he’s a Vice-President in a multi-national firm. By passion, he’s an intrepid traveler. He’s as ecstatic about going on an inaugural flight as he’s clinching a multi-million dollar deal. He works hard not just to party hard, but travel hard. From exotic rail journeys, luxury destinations to backpacking adventures, travel takes him to different worlds. Why travel? The answer is simple. It’s not just unraveling a beautiful new world, but as Miriam Beard says, ‘It’s more than a seeing of sights; it’s a change that goes on deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” Travel is a wholesome experience. It changes you in more ways than you can imagine. You become a seeker… looking at new avenues to explore… and broaden the mind. You soak in new cultures, learn new languages, meet new people and assimilate what you see and perhaps, unconsciously, you become a different person, albeit in small ways. What you assimilate is perhaps what makes you a different person. And that’s perhaps why travel is an important part of who we are. A quick getaway, a stopover or the annual family holiday – there’s nothing like taking a few days off for some relaxation and rejuvenation, much needed in the stressful world we live in. And if you can live without your Blackberry or your laptop, it becomes an ‘escape’ in the truest sense. “The wise man travels to discover himself”, says James Russell Lowell. As you turn the pages of the issue, let the journey of selfdiscovery begin.

Why are the hands of Japan's silk spinners so beautiful? It was this intriguing question that led SENSAI to unlock the secret of Koishimaru Silk. Originally reserved for the exclusive use of the imperial family, this silk of silks turned out to hold the power to beautify the skin. Deeply hydrating and able to stimulate the production of hyaluronic acid, Koishimaru Silk surrounds skin cells in an ‘Endless Ocean of Moisture’. Bathed within this life-giving environment, the skin is restored to health and profoundly moisturised. PRIME SOLUTION combines the exceptional power of Koishimaru Silk with unique and state-of-the-art skincare technology from SENSAI that can dramatically enhance intercellular communication. Deep within our skin, cells send and receive vital information concerning environmental changes and potential sources of damage, encouraging each other to constantly reproduce and repair the skin. Yet as we age, their responsiveness to these signals diminishes, reducing skin's ability to quickly repair itself. Formulated with Sanzashi (hawthorn) Extract, which can reactivate cellular receptivity, PRIME SOLUTION can help reawaken and revitalise ageing skin cells. The skin appears smoother and firmer, and is better able to respond to the positive signals sent by subsequent anti-ageing skincare products. By combining the power of tradition with the latest skincare technologies, SENSAI has created a new generation of anti-ageing skincare treatments. Lead a life of beauty. With SENSAI. RING IN THE GOOD TIMES Eszter Faykiss reports exclusively for Signature from Baselworld 2012

here are different stereotypes for Swiss people. Probably not all of them are valid, but what I can tell from experience is that time matters to them more than to the sons and daughters of any other nation. Have you seen a train being late in Switzerland? Or Swiss people not arriving to a meeting on time? They are rather five minutes early than one minute late and they also consider it a matter of honour that they pay bills on time. Blessed by the talent for precision and punctuality it is no wonder that Swiss watchmakers have supplied the majority of watches to the world for centuries. Manufacturers from the banks of Lake Genéve and Lake Neuchátel have become the synonyms of quality, inimitable design and perfect reliability, raising the entire Swiss watchmaking industry to the heights of today.

T The writer is a Certified Diamond Grader from HRD Antwerp and has a passion for all things that sparkle. She also has more than 8 years of marketing, communication and event experience in various industries, mainly energy and IT sector and jewellery business, in different regions; Europe, Australia and Middle East.

The history of watch and jewellery exhibitions in the region dates back to 1917, when the first 'Schweizer Mustermesse Basel' was held. In 2012, the one week show of BASELWORLD attracted more than 100,000 visitors, 1815 exhibitors on 160,000 m² and over 3,300 journalists describing clearly the largest and most prestigious event of the kind world-wide. This is the week that all exhibitors have prepared for in the past year, the week that echoes the announcements of novelties in the world, the week that entices the lovers of watches and jewellery to Basel and that the whole industry has sharpened its nerves for. This is the week that defines the trends for the next twelve months.

two pieces with ultra-thin movements. The cases of Chopard L.U.C XP Skeletec and L.U.C XPS Poinçon de Genève 125th Anniversary Edition are less than 8mm thick with incredible 3.5mm thin movements. Among its many complications Blancpain also created an ultra slim movement achieving a remarkable balance: the Villeret collection is the perfect mixture of technical refinement and aesthetic purity. The classical design of the Slim Line collection by Frédérique Constant is elegant and timeless, embodied in a 9mm case. China being the largest and growing market for the sector, the Year of Dragon has inspired many watch companies from different categories. Swatch made a blue-white version for the young generation, Swarowski glitters with The Piazza Grande Automatic Dragon Limited Edition and if one aims to have a more minimalistic version, the Danish Skagen Dragon Watches Collection delivers just that. Jaquet Droz and Glashütte Original elevated the topic to an artistic level. The Petite Heure Minute Relief Dragon from Jaquet Droz with sumptuous materials, realistic decorative motifs and virtuoso technical features present the dragon, that legendary creature whose magic pearl symbolises the power and wisdom of the Emperor. Glashütte, German manufactory has created eight unique timepieces based on the classic Original Senator Meissen Tourbillon, each featuring a Meissen porcelain dial with a beautifully hand-painted Chinese dragon. The ornamental dragons rendered in a ceramic paint are made of pure gold dust.

PROMISING PERSPECTIVES “Since last we met here almost 12 months ago, the world economic situation has continued to deteriorate.” – started his opening speech Jacques J. Duchêne, Chairman of the Exhibitors’ Committee. “In this severely battered world, which is going through radical reshaping, there is, however, one industry that has been able to stand up well and even to break numerous records.”

endeavoured to capture the attention by building more impressive, more extravagant and impeccable multi-level constructions, and opened dedicated floors to the public and restricted areas for people with appointment and for buyers.

Indeed. The exports of Swiss watchmaking sector reached a record 19.3 billion francs (RO. 8.1 billion) in 2011, soaring 19.2 per cent from a year earlier. Over 10 billion francs is accounted for the Middle East and the Far East alone.

VISIBLE TRENDS IN 2012 “Haute horlogerie goes on a diet: extra-slim timepieces have again a grand entrance in 2012” – as Baselworld news described. For the master watchmakers is always a challenge to reduce the thickness of the movement while preserve the accuracy. This year, watches thinner than 1cm, offering a light and comfortable fit started to emerge. Dedicated to the memory of Louis-Ullysse Chopard, the luxury house has come out with

The fair occupied six massive buildings embodying numerous halls, most of which were dedicated to watches, some to jewellery and others to gemstones and related tools. Companies

Baselworld brought novelties. Some of them are really new concepts, others repolish a design from the past. The one week is just enough to see them.

Dragon as a motive is pretty popular not only on watches, but also on other lifestyle objects. Luxury mobile phone company, Vertu came out earlier with a special Signature Dragon Edition, while Caran d’Ache introduced the “Year of the Dragon” Limited Edition pens. This latest addition to the Artist Collection is a genuine tribute to the refinement of Asia, the richness of Chinese culture and the extraordinary graphics of the Zodiac. It is a magnificent demonstration of Swiss expertise by the masters of lacquering running symbolic colours of black, red and gold along the classic pen lines. Last year the global demand for platinum jewellery increased by 2 per cent to 2.47 million ounces, according to the Johnson Matthey Platinum interim report. Platinum played a great role in Basel, too. Baselworld 2012 hosted the 3rd Platinum Design Awards competition organised by Platinum Guild International. Although this metal is extremely rare and requires special tools, and knowledge to work with, more than

A subjective guide to Basel Basel is probably not an evident travel destination when you think of Switzerland, however Basel is a city which has a lot to offer: culture, culinary experiences, luxury shopping to the highest perfection with a charming location along the River Rhine. The city is very well organised, clean and easy to access. You can travel here for business, sightseeing or even for your honeymoon, you will certainly find what you are looking for – something extraordinary. Let us offer you a taster to Basel: What to see? Old town: The first written sources of Basel (Basilea) date back to 374 AD. Basel’s Old Town is one of the bestpreserved and most beautiful in Europe, where buildings from the 15th century are living in contrast, but in clear harmony with modern works of internationally renowned architects.

50 stunning platinum jewellery designs were displayed at the 26 participating manufacturer’s booths. The jury of 50 international journalists rewarded the most significant pieces in four categories. Tendencies can be observed amongst the precious stones, too. In the Hall of Elements many beautiful gemstones were displayed. Colombian emeralds, colourful sapphires, deep blue tanzanites and “Siamese colour” rubies were seen often. Diamonds, of course, continued to dominate. However it was interesting to see the strong presence of the pretty rare pink ones. Pearls continued to be one of the most popular gemstones. Bernd Willy Ripp, managing director of Groh + Ripp, sums up this year’s fair as follows: “After a highly successful show in 2011 we were able to boost the good result we obtained by a further 25 per cent this time round. The quality of the visitors was exceedingly good. The other precious-stone dealers are similarly highly satisfied.” LOOKING FORWARD TO 2013 The building work on the impressive new hall complex which is to be brought into operation for Baselworld2013 is progressing on schedule. The central section of the new building is already standing; Baselworld team has a clear goal: serve the industry at the most professional level. François Thiébaud, Chairman of the Swiss Exhibitors’ Committee, described Baselworld as a complete success: “The 2012 edition has confirmed the success of this unique platform, which brings together the watch and jewellery industry from all over the world. The positive results of the past two years allow us to look into the future full of optimism: we are reckoning with an excellent start to the new Baselworld 2013.”

It is equipped a mechanical self-winding movement with a 72-hour power reserve. The Everose gold version is chocolate brown with sunray finish and pink gold hands. BONN While travelling in a high-speed intercity (ICE) train from Frankfurt’s long distance train station (Fernbahnhof) to Bonn via Mainz and Koblenz, you will be enticed by the stupendous beauty of steep vineyards on Rudesheimer Berg overlooking river Rhine. These vineyards, planted with Riesling grapes, produce some of the finest wines in Germany. As the train chugs off, straddling the tributaries of river Rhine and beautiful German countryside, you may try an attempt to recollect Ernst Stadler's famous philosophical poem ‘On crossing the Rhine Bridge at Cologne by night’. As one of the fastest growing Meetings Incentives Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) destinations in Europe, Bonn attracts a large number of international travellers. Capital of the erstwhile Western Germany, Bonn now hosts 17 UN institutions and is the seat of some of the biggest corporate players in Germany. The city is home to one of Germany's oldest churches, The Bonn Minster, which was built between the 11th and 13th centuries. As the hometown of Ludwig van Beethoven, Bonn has three halls bearing the name of the legendary composer including the famous Beethovenhalle. Other major attractions in the city include Old Town Hall, built in 1737 in Rococo style; Poppelsdorfer Allee, an alley flanked by chestnut trees; Centre of the UN Campus situated at river Rhine; Post Tower, which houses the headquarters of DHL; a 12th century church called Double Church etc.

AACHEN Situated close to the Netherlands border, 90 km to the west of Bonn, Aachen is known as the city of water and horses. Famous for its ‘Printen’ (spicy ginger bread), the 2000 years old imperial city of Charlemagne presents itself as a cosmopolitan metropolis with historical flair. In the alleys of the old town, many historical buildings relate to the vivid history of the city. The Aachen Cathedral is one of the most famous examples of occidental architecture and the first world cultural heritage in Germany recognized by UNESCO. It was the coronation church of more than 30 German kings and the burial site of Charlemagne. The Cathedral Treasury is regarded as the most important ecclesiastical treasury north of the Alps. It houses sacral art treasures from late Antique, Carolingian, Ottonian and Staufian epoch. Around the cathedral and town hall numerous retailers and branches of well-known retail shops invite you for a stroll. Suermondt-Ludwig and Couven museums give the visitors an insight to the history the city from 12th century onwards, while Izm International Newspaper Museum offers one of the most recent information presentations on international media of the 21st century. RWTH Aachen University situated in the heart of the city is an internationally acclaimed university.

FRANKFURT As one of the busiest transit hubs in Europe connecting you with most of the German and European destinations, Frankfurt is the best place to start a German trip. Its excellent transportation infrastructure consists of three railway stations for high-speed ICE trains and the Autobahn interchange where two of the most heavily used motorways in Europe meet. In addition, the city has two underground railway systems as well as an above-ground tram system. Your first impression about Frankfurt will be the newly opened Airrail Center Frankfurt which is built in the airport on top of a train station, and considered the largest office building in Germany. Frankfurt’s skyline is dotted with some of the tallest skyscrapers and high-rise buildings in Europe such as Commerzbank Tower and Messeturm. As the seat of European Central Bank, Frankfurt Stock Exchange and several German banks, the city is nicknamed as ‘Bankfurt’. Frankfurt also hosts the world’s largest motor and consumer good shows, and trade and book fairs. The Zeil and Goethestrasse are some of the most expensive shopping streets in the city. Saint Bartholomew's Cathedral, a 14th century building named after Bartholomew the Apostle, Saint Paul's Church, Archaeological Garden, Frankfurt city hall and Goethe University of Frankfurt are some of the places a traveller to Frankfurt can not afford to miss.

COUNTRYSCAPE

SCHMALKALDEN If you are fed up with the hustle and bustle of busy city throughways, gear up to explore the green heart of Germany. A six-hour drive from Bonn through the dense forest of Thuringia, the central state of Germany, will take you to the snow-clad pristine farmlands of Germany. The medieval city of Schmalkalden, tucked away at the Schmalkalde River and down the crest road of Thuringia Forest with half-timbered and stone houses, is a far cry from Germany’s developed areas. St. George Church in the city is a Gothic church constructed in 1509. The Castle of Wilhelmsburg, lying high above the town, is a significant monument of art and culture of the German Renaissance. The mural paintings and stucco elements at the castle take you for a walk down memory lane to the history of Renaissance and Reformation in Germany. A view from the castle over the historical town to the mountains of Rhon and Thuringia Forest invites you to make a stop and probably to stay longer. The factory and headquarters of Viba, one of the famous German sweet manufactures, is based in this city. Some of the sights one should not miss in the city are Lutheran Deanship, Todenwarth's stone house, The Island and the Salt Bridge, The Rose Pharmacy and Large stone house, The Liebaug House etc.

LUBECK Legend has it that Lubeck is the first city in the world to produce marzipan. According to an apocryphal story, marzipan was first made when the city ran out of all foods except stored almonds and sugar. The presence in the city of 200-year old Niederegger, one of the world's best manufactures of marzipan and sweets, testifies to this claim. Niederegger café in the town centre of Lubeck has got a marzipan museum on its upper floor, where you will see a marzipan statue (group photo made in almond and sugar) of all eminent people related somehow with marzipan. Situated on the river Trave, the port city of Lubeck is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for its Brick Gothic architectural heritage. Much of the old town has kept a medieval look with old buildings and narrow streets. The old part of the town is an island enclosed by the Trave. The Elbe–Lubeck Canal connects the Trave with the Elbe River. The borough of Travemunde is a sea resort and ferry port on the coast of the Baltic Sea. Hometown of two Nobel Laureates for literature - Thomas Mann and Gunter Grass - the city keeps their memories still alive in two houses named after them. Lübecker Dom and the Marienkirche are the oldest of seven church steeples in the city. In addition, Lubecker Rathaus (Town Hall), Saint Catherine Church, Fehmarnbelt Museum port, Hospital of the Holy Spirit and crow-stepped gabled town house building are some of the attractive places in the city.

KIT JONES DISHES OUT 10 TIPS TO MAKING SURE THAT YOUR HOLIDAY IS SAFE AND COMFORTABLE

1

If you are flying with your partner, pack half of your clothes in each of the suitcases. Then if you or your partner’s bag is one of the 29 million that go missing each year at least you will both have something to wear until the missing bag turns up. Travelling alone? Pack some essentials for your first day in your hand luggage.

2 I never travel without anti histamine tablets so that if I am bitten by mosquitoes or sand flies the painful itch does not spoil my holiday.

3 Countries differ on what they consider allowable prescription drugs. (Check with the foreign embassy of the country being visited). Photocopy the prescription as evidence that the drug is prescribed for your wellbeing and travel with this and the prescription in its original packaging in your hand luggage.

4 Always take a shower cap or two when on offer in hotel rooms. They can be used to cover the soles of dusty shoes, wrapped around a sticky sun screen bottle or damp swimwear for packing in your suitcase.

5 Travel with a photocopy of your passport / valid visa pages. If you are unfortunate enough to lose your passport you may speed up the process of a replacement or onward travel.

6 Having missed a flight recently, I was glad to have my usual stash of goodies in my handbag. Treats that have a long shelf life and come in robust packaging such as mixed nuts, dried apricots or mango slices are ideal. Realising you have something sustaining in your bag when you find yourself delayed or not enjoying the airline supplied meal can give you quite a boost.

7 For a trip to a city, instead of constantly taking taxis, print off walking and/or public transport directions between the offices, places of interest and hotels that you will be moving between. What better way to save money and get to see some sights? Go to Google and click on the ‘maps’ option followed by ‘get directions’.

8 If you are a music fan like me and want to listen to your own favourite tunes in the hotel room pop your smart phone into a small bowl – it amplifies the sound beautifully.

9 If you travel to countries where communication may be a challenge (for me this was Moscow) ask the hotel to provide their business card and get them to write on the back in the local language: “Please provide this person with directions to our hotel”. With a few hand gestures, and what looks like a game of charades in the street, your new found comrade will have directed you back to your hotel in no time.

10 Never rely 100 per cent on the information provided on the screens in airport lounges. But if the worst ever happens, and you too miss your flight, at least you will have your stash of goodies and your change of clothes in your bag to keep you going!

THE SIX SENSES ZIGHY BAY IS A WORLD APART, DIVIDED FROM THE MUNDANE ‘REAL’ WORLD. DEEPA RAJAN CROSSES THE DIVIDE TO EXPERIENCE BARE-FOOTED LUXURY AT THIS HIDEAWAY…

28

I

t is difficult to articulate what sets Oman’s Musandam Peninsula apart from everything else in the region. Perhaps it is the remoteness of the locale, but then it has to be said the Arabian Gulf has no shortage of this feeling. Maybe it is the rising buttresses of rock that dominate the landscape, each one a bulwark against a worldly other, ever protective of an environment and culture that pre-dates most contemporary civilisations. More than likely it is the combination of these factors make the region what it is, separated from its mainland by the UAE, and providing an ideal base for the kind of tourism that Six Senses Zighy Bay is looking for. Within the great gamut of opinions that eco-tourism brings up is the ever present notion that the visitor is doing something good for the environment, the world, their species.

DESTINATION OMAN

EVERYTHING ABOUT SIX SENSES ZIGHY BAY IS LUXURY THAT DOES NOT BLIND. JUST FOLLOW THE ZIGHY CODE; DON’T USE CELL PHONES, ADOPT THE SLOW LIFE AND UNWIND... At Six Senses Zighy Bay, the guests must to be ready to buy into the mission, set aside their phones and laptops and take the contradictory position of making an effort to unwind. Set at the foot of a 300m bluff, down a road as winding and narrow as imagination can create, lies a replica of an Omani village. Narrow sandy streets buffer stone villas, each their own compound of bare-footed luxury. On arrival, aside from the low key but affable reception, guests will realise that the resort takes the business of unwinding seriously. The attitude Six Senses Zighy Bay have set themselves apart from the pace and hustle of the world outside is also a statement of intent, if you will, that no one/thing can disturb its own microclimate. Budget is not a concept that can readily be applied to a locale such as this. The craftsmanship and the subtle hints of the exclusivity are as synonymous to Zighy Bay as the tick and tock is to a clock maker. Swimming in the azure ocean, reclining on your own personal majlis in your villa or settling back to watch a film under the flickering stars, the pace of life acts as the opposite to the very personalities that drove its visitors to success in the first place. But this style, persona or methodology is to be embraced. Activities run through most days, designed really to break up the routine of pure luxury and give you something to think about. Be it Arabic cooking, sorbet tasting or any of the other innumerable little events, Zighy Bay produces a very hands on style of resort. Here you are expected to muck in with the chef and be a part of the melange. For the more active, the LIFE programme offers a variety of land, sea and air based fun, all of which are of course run by the most experienced (but down to earth) pros you could meet. Particularly enjoyable is Cinema Paradiso, which allows you to watch family films, old and new,

on a giant screen set up against the vast expanse of the sea. Here you lie, reclining on comfortable beach chairs, under the beautiful night sky, munching on popcorn, wondering if this is what idyllic life is meant to be. Everything is natural here. The resort has its own organic garden supplying in a good harvest of its vegetables, herbs and fruit. The resort is also is fringed date palm trees which provide the ideal ingredient for divine date smoothies that can cause one to be a glutton, if one is not careful or for scrumptious cakes that you can order in the comfort of your villa to celebrate a special occasion. Be it Spice Market, Summer House or in-villa dining, food will only add to the reawakening of all your senses, but nothing mesmerises like Sense on the Edge. The fine dining restaurant is a fiveminute drive from the resort in a chauffeurdriven 4WD, perched on a cliff top 293m above sea level. The resort glows in the dark down below, the moonlight acting as a beacon, as you take your seat ‘on the edge’. Don’t expect a la carte here, but a choice of three or five course meals, each course with five different choices. Fine dining at its height, literally! We suggest make this your destination dining experience for your last night at the resort (If you ever leave!). There is nothing quite spectacular. Everything about Six Senses Zighy Bay is luxury that does not blind. You can walk barefoot along with the resort’s adopted goats running round. You can bicycle your way into glorious sunrises. You can soak in a big stone bath in the safe confines of your villa. Just follow the Zighy code; don’t use cell phones, adopt the SLOW Life and dress the way you like, keeping in mind cultural sensitivities, of course. At Zighy Bay all that is expected is that you come fully prepared to get in touch with all your senses, the natural way. For more details you can e-mail: reservations-zighy@ sixsenses.com or call on +968 26735888

Sense of flight Guests have the option of 3 arrival experiences;

a scenic drive over the mountain, an exhilarating speed boat ride from the local port and for those who want to arrive in true style, paraglide in! We chose the latter! A desire oft mentioned is the ability of flight, high above the grounds where the birds and the breeze dance a tango to the tune of Mother Nature. This can be attained at Zighy Bay not with combustion, electronics or gadgetery, but finely made compounds of synthetics, some strings of cord and a whole gut-full of bravery. Being told by the expert that the next step of the (very short) introductory process is to run towards the edge of a cliff some 1000 feet above the ground is obviously and patently contrary to all the in-built safety features we as a species have created for self-preservation. But, it works. We run. We propel ourselves off a perfectly fine landmass into the open space beneath our feet, the canopy above deftly catching rising currents of warms air as it barrels up the sheer rock face. You suspend yourself, your fears, desire, hopes and ambition and let the world be, happy as you are caught in a blissful limbo between heaven and earth. Extreme fun has never felt such peace and tranquillity as this.

Sense of Wellness

The sense of life and the sense of taste complement the sense of wellness that forms the basis of Zighy Bay’s award-winning spa. It offers a full menu including local and international treatments, focusing on holistic wellness and rejuvenation programmes that include 3-, 5- and 7-day wellness programmes available in five different themes. Do try the Signature Mukha Chikitsa. It is a divine facial massage of the marmas or pranic (energetic) centres, with Six Senses’ unique and revitalising Facial Blend of mogra (Queen of jasmines), rose (Queen of oils) and sandalwood; rejuvenating on a mental, physical and emotional level. This ritual includes hot compresses and a refreshing and cooling mud mask, ending with an experience of the mogra and Indian Rose Gold Cream. 24k gold soaks into your skin with this extravagant blend of essential oils and natural bases, providing you with a youthful glow of your skin.

THE TRAVELLER - FOOD

THE FOOD TRAIL Love food, then why not turn it into a holiday plan. Travel the globe, relish the local cuisine and whet your gastronomical appetite in these gourmet destinations

OSAKA, JAPAN The devastating earthquake and tsunami have still not managed to make a dent on Japan’s popularity as a tourist destination. When it comes to food, nothing parallels the high streets of Osaka. Osaka is known as ‘kuidaore’, literally meaning ‘bringing ruin upon oneself by extravagance in food’ and is known for its food culture. This is not only due to Osaka's proximity to the sea and mountains, which makes all kinds of ingredients easily available, but also because various products were easily brought to Osaka from remote areas on ships via the calm Seto Inland Sea.

MUST EAT: Okonomiyaki A Japanese-style pancake made using a batter of flour, water, and egg with shredded cabbage, meat or squid, grilled on a hot plate and topped with special sauce and mayonnaise. Takoyaki Round dumplings made by pouring batter made of flour, water, and egg into a griddle with hemispheric indentations and adding bits of chopped octopus, scallion and other ingredients. Kitsune Udon Wheat flour noodle served with ‘age’, which is red-brown deep-fried, thinly sliced Tofu, in hot soup made from ‘kombu’, a kind of dried kelp, and seasoned with soy sauce, etc.

LIMA, PERU Frommers picked this as the top food destination for 2012. According to Frommers, “This coastal city has been riding a wave of growing fame for its gustatory pleasures. Lima’s cultural miscegenation -- a rich stew of Spanish, African, Chinese and Japanese -- is reflected in its culinary fusion. Limeño cuisine encompasses spicy creole dishes, Nikkei (2nd-generation Japanese), and chifa (a Peruvian twist on Chinese). The long Pacific coast is notable less for its beaches than the endless bounty of fresh seafood that makes it to markets and restaurant tables.” Need we say more?

MUST EAT Ceviche A tangy plate of raw fish and shellfish marinated in lime juice and ajíes, or hot chile peppers. Causa Dish made with boiled and mashed yellow potato, served with lettuce leaves, pieces of country cheese, olives, corn and hard-boiled egg. Served cold. Mazamorra Morada A traditional dessert, it is a kind of pudding prepared with water in which the purple corn is boiled with sugar, clove, cinnamon, quince, pineapple, ‘guindas’ (a variety of cherries), ‘orejones’ (dried peaches), potato starch, yam flour and lemon juice.

42

TUSCANY, ITALY There’s a reason why even the very-difficultto-please Gordon Ramsay loves Tuscany. Ramsay was quoted as saying that in Tuscany the food is still pure and untouched and it won't change for 50 years.” Indeed, every chef worth his salt will swear by the natural treasures he can find in the local markets of Tuscany. Tuscan cuisine is known for its fine natural and flavourful ingredients, it's a typical expression of the Mediterranean diet, considered among others, the most wholesome and tasty, olive oil, pasta, fish and meat. All it takes is few basic ingredients to create some exceptional dishes.

MUST EAT: Bistecca alla Fiorentina Massive steak cuts from the huge white Chianini bullocks raised on Tuscany’s mountain pastures Pappardelle Made with pappardelle, which is a thicker type of spaghetti, it is served with a wild boar sauce. It can be seasoned with other classic ingredients: porcini mushrooms, meat sauces, artichokes, sausages, etc. Ribollita (literally, reboiled) Cabbage soup, often thickened with bread, and panzanella, a bread and tomato salad or soup.

MARRAKECH, MORROCO The souks of Medina hold the charm. Vibrant is an understatement when it comes to the central market square of Marrakech’s Medina Quarter, Jemaa el-Fnaa. Walk through stalls that sell everything from orange juice to snails and goats brains. Meanwhile crowds gather round to watch magicians, and listen to Berber story tellers. Moroccan cooking is strongly characterised by the subtle blending of spices, and Moroccans expertly use them to enhance, rather than mask, the flavour and fragrance of their dishes.

MUST EAT Pastilla Pigeon cooked, diced and deployed in a perfectly flaky pastry along with finely chopped pistachios and almonds. Topped with a dusting of cinnamon and powdered sugar Chicken Tagine Chicken and caramelized pumpkin, cooked to perfection, with spices, flavours and ingredients offer a taste of Morocco. Sfenj A deep-fried Moroccan doughnut, usually threaded six at a time on a piece of bamboo reed or palm frond.

44

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM This is definitely the place for people who take their chocolate seriously. But don’t be surprised to find other delights that will tingle your taste buds. There are restaurants featuring Belgian cuisine specialties including moules frites (mussels and fries), Waterzoo, stoemp potato, and Salade Liégeoise. In Belgium, you get the best of both worlds: the bounty of a hearty German meal and the quality of fine French cuisine.

MUST EAT: Frites The Belgian version of French fries, they sell like hot cakes on the streets and restaurants alike. Frites are always served fresh and hot (very hot!) and often in paper cones with sauce on the side. Popular sauces are mayonnaise, andalouse and ketchup. Restaurants are also known for serving their own special sauces for frites. Stoemp It consists of pureed or mashed potatoes, other root vegetables and can also include cream, bacon, onion or shallot, herbs, and spices. Belgian waffles (Brussels waffles) They are prepared with a yeast-leavened batter. It is generally, but not always, lighter, thicker, and crispier and has larger pockets compared to other waffle varieties. Most waffles are served warm by street vendors and dusted with confectioner's sugar. However, despite their name, ‘Brussels waffles’ were actually invented in Ghent in 1839!

THE TRAVELLER - RECAP

SHOP TILL YOU DROP‌

Milan, Paris, Bangkok is where you go if you want electronics, high-end fashion, jewellery and watches. But then shopping is not just about all that is it? Great shopping can also be found in some unexpected places, such as in Astana, Kazakhstan, the second coldest capital in the world. We pick a few destinations that will appeal to the shopaholic in you..

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA Argentina has excellent leather, the soft almost-buttery-to-thetouch kind of leather that feels fine to wear and fine to look at. Leather stores, leather shops, leather boutiques - they are all fronts for the factories. If they don't have what you want they are skilled in getting you to go to their nearest store or factory. The shopping mall has found its place in Buenos Aires. Patio Bullrich, in Recoleta, is probably the most exclusive and an afternoon’s activity itself. Galerias Pacifico, on the corner of Florida and Cordoba, is a three-storey mall quality clothes and sports stores. There is also excellent cashmere - sweaters, dresses, skirts, jackets. Antiques are another excellent buy in Argentina, and San Telmo is the most recognised center of antiques. Many of it's old mansions have been turned into antique shops, and on Sunday the square becomes an outdoor antique market. 46

TAIPEI CITY, TAIWAN Shopping venues in Taipei, Taiwan include department stores, malls, underground transit malls, night markets, and shopping districts. Technology and beauty products are two reasons why Taipei City has become an international shopping destination. For instance, Nova Electronics Mall is a mega complex filled with every sort of gadget imaginable – many of the models are not yet available overseas. International beauty brands such as Estée Lauder and Lancôme can be found at exceptionally low prices at the Uni-Hankyu department store. But then, it is the night markets that make Taipei lively. The most famous and busiest of them is the Shilin Night Market in the Shilin District (accessible from Jiantan Station). Other notable night markets in Taipei include the Raohe Street Night Market (Songshan)

ASTANA, KAZAKHSTAN Don’t let the world’s second coldest capital tag deter you from visiting this place. Kazakhstan’s capital Astana is in the middle of a building boom largely financed by profiteers from the oil industry. Last year the upscale shopping mall Khan Shatyr opened, revealing a clever and distinct design in a 150m tall tent as a tribute to the country’s nomadic background. With mini-golf, concerts and a water park it always provides a pleasant shopping experience, despite the cold outside. 48

REYKJAVIK, ICELAND Laugavegur is the shopping street in the downtown area. In this popular shopping area of Reykjavik visitors find a large number of shops and craft studios. Skólavödustígur has also turned into a very hot shopping area. Several shops can be found selling outdoor wear and equipment, such as Skátabúdin at Snorrabraut 60. The Kringlan shopping mall in the new city centre of Reykjavik, is a shopping hub of social activity. Get some souvenirs from Íslandia, the popular store with Icelandic souvenirs. Fur apparel is found at Eggert at Skólavördustígur 38. The famous lopapeysa (Icelandic jumper) are also great to bring home - they can be bought in every big store in Reykjavik.

KUWAIT CITY, KUWAIT Kuwait is a modern country with everything from glitzy shopping malls to old ‘souks’ and Friday markets where culture and tradition abound. THE TRAVELLER - GUIDE

VACATION CHIC Comfort is paramount on vacation, but it does not just apply to feeling physically comfortable as you tour an ancient site, relax in a sidewalk café or lie on the beach. It also means avoiding disapproving stares from locals of the country you are in. Whether you are in Italy, Paris, St Tropez, London, Seychelles, Jaipur, Mumbai, Istanbul or New York, one must always stick to casual elegance and opt for understated clothes with clean lines, neutral colours and easy-tocare-for fabrics. All holidays involve loads of walking around and it’s always smart to carry flip-flops, athletic shoes and low-heeled, stylish, leather walking shoes for both men and women. Summers can be a little steamy, so carrying two pairs of shorts for men and cotton slacks or capri pants for women are a stylish alternative. The appeal of jeans is universal, and a quality pair (no holes) matched with a pressed sports shirt, polo or blouse is acceptable casual wear anywhere in the world. Pack a sweater or light jacket for airports and those long flights and transits to keep you warm. A small raincoat or travel umbrella is a smart accessory to have year-round. A hat and sunglasses are vital anywhere in the world to protect those eyes. There is no need to carry one, but shopping for a local scarf, shawl or men's tie to dress up your travel wardrobe is always a good It is hard not to look like a tourist as you gaze in wonder at the sights in any country. Play down your image by opting for a messenger bag or sturdy leather purse rather than a backpack.

52

Shop at travel stores for a stylish bag with reinforced straps to thwart knife-wielding purse snatchers. Fanny packs are susceptible to pickpockets and also label you as a tourist. Keep vital documents, money and credit cards in an inside jacket pocket or front pocket of your pants or jeans. Pack a crushable string or canvas shopping bag to avoid juggling cumbersome packages. Mostly on travel, we often visit churches, temples, mosques, holy shrines and some musuems, so carrying some conservative silhouettes for both men and women always helps. Basics are best for both men and women. If one is planning to visit families, buddies and long lost friends over dinners and lunches at formal places, it’s advisable for men to pack slacks and a polo-style shirt that can make a great attire at a dinner and the shirt can be worn the next day with shorts. One can always shop for a coat and a tie in case there is a formal engagement during the holiday. For women, don't limit yourself to dresses and heels because you may regret it. Dinner wear is actually fairly simple. For daytime, always pack a pair of light slacks and a pair of black slacks with blouses or tanks. Formal night is whatever you want it to be but slacks with a dressy blouse are fine. Lastly remember even though you want to travel light, carry some bright-coloured clothes that look fabulous in pictures that will make a good memory!

THE HMS TITANIC SUNK LONG AGO, BUT ITS STORY STILL REMAINS ALIVE THROUGH MOVIES, BOOKS AND NOW A COMMEMORATIVE PROJECT BY ARTIST DODO NEWMAN THAT PAYS A DAZZLING TRIBUTE TO THIS SHIP. SIGNATURE CAN ONLY SKIM THE SURFACE OF WHAT IS A LEGEND BEYOND BELIEF…

Titanic

“If it hadn't been for the ship going down, I'd be an American leading an ordinary American life,” said Millvina Dean, the last surviour of the Titanic tragedy. She died in 2009. It was 100 years ago that the world lost one of mankind’s greatest creations; but the HMS Titanic has left a lasting legacy that that, till today, affects every aspect of maritime travel. The HMS Titanic was like no other cruise liner in operation at the time. It was one of only three Olympic class ocean liners operated by White Star Line. It was also the largest and grandest ocean liner to ever sail the seas. Designed to look and feel like a floating highclass hotel, it was like no other cruise liner that came before. Her passengers are said to have included some of the wealthiest people in the world, such as millionaires John Jacob Astor IV, Benjamin Guggenheim and Isidor Strauss, as well as over a thousand emigrants from Ireland, Scandinavia and elsewhere seeking a new life in America. The ship was designed to be the last word in comfort and luxury, with an on-board gymnasium, swimming pool, libraries, highclass restaurants and opulent cabins. She also had a powerful wireless telegraph provided for the convenience of passengers as well as for operational use. Though she had advanced safety features such as watertight compartments and remotely activated watertight doors, she lacked enough lifeboats to accommodate all of those aboard. Due to outdated maritime safety regulations, she carried only enough lifeboats for 1,178 people – a third of her total passenger and crew capacity. Measuring in at a colossal 269m in length, 28.2m in breath and over 6,000GRT (Gross Register Tons), the Titanic was no doubt a grand spectacle as it lay docked at Southampton on the morning of April 10, 1912

waiting for its 2,240 passengers and crew to board in preparation for its maiden voyage across the Atlantic. Little did they know of the nightmare that was to ensue in a matter of four days. On April 14, 1912, four days into the crossing and about 375 miles south of Newfoundland, she hit an iceberg at 11:40 pm. The glancing collision caused Titanic's hull plates to buckle inwards in a number of locations on her starboard side and opened five of her sixteen watertight compartments to the sea. Over the next two and a half hours, the ship gradually filled with water and sank. A fraction of the passengers and some crew members were evacuated in lifeboats, many of which were launched only partly filled. Just before 2:20am Titanic broke up and sank bow-first with over a thousand people still on board. Those in the water died within minutes from hypothermia caused by immersion in the freezing ocean. Of the 2,240 people on board the vessel, only 723 survived. They were taken aboard from the lifeboats by the RMS Carpathia a few hours later. On April 15, 2012, it will be 100 years since the Titanic met its fate in the icy waters of the North Atlantic on

58

its maiden voyage to New York. A lot of stories have emerged since then. Some true, some not so. The Titanic has been eulogised in books and movies. Who does not remember being moved to tears while watching Jack and Rose die in James Cameron’s adaptation of the Titanic saga! The year 2012 will see the release of this epic movie in 3D. While many people know of the movie, not many know that for three years now, an inspirationalist artist Dodo Newman and her team along with Swarovski Elements have been working on the extraordinary Titanic Commemorative project, an art initiative that marks this centenary. Newman’s creative work highlights the human aspect of the tragedy – the 2,240 passengers and crew, 1,517 of whom perished. It conjures a poignant image of people boarding the Titanic full of hopes and dreams, unaware that they were destined to share a tragedy of unimaginable magnitude. They came from every walk of life: personnel from the ship; the rich and famous (American millionaires Benjamin Guggenheim, Isodor Straus and John Astor all drowned); professionals; the

poor, seeking a new life. Friends, families and strangers alike, they were to be linked in collective memory forever. Dodo Newman has worked for nine years to experiment the right formula, which makes the surface stable as well as provide a long term solution for keeping the quality high. Using her own special techniques, Dodo Newman’s Commemorative Titanic Memorabilia depict the emotion that the survivours experienced. Fragments of glittering diamonds, semiprecious stones and brilliantly glinting Swarovski Elements represent icebergs, which she applies to transparent Plexiglas. The surface effect is magical: liquid crystal against a background of swirling oceanic blues, reflecting the play of light on icy water – shockingly beautiful and, quite simply, unique. Furthermore, since the Memorabilia are created on Plexiglas the diamond and the Swarovski Crystal masterpieces are two sided in an extraordinary way, each Memorabilia being unique and producing different effects on each side of the Plexiglas. The impressions of the Memorabilia are further enhanced with

the use of LED lighting in the edges. This limited range of rare and Ăźber-luxe handcrafted collectibles, each with its own certificate of authenticity, consists of 2,240 diamond- and Swarovski Elements-surfaced masterpieces, each dedicated to a passenger. The Titanic had passengers from 44 different countries and depending on the country of origin, some pieces are extremely limited in number. A further 200 items will be selected by 100 museum curators around the world, while others will be auctioned and sold, with a major portion of the proceeds going to 100 charitable causes. The Titanic Memorabilia Collection offers a unique opportunity to own a part of history and enrich our human heritage. Dedicated to the memory of the passengers, it touches our hearts today, 100 years after the worst maritime disaster in peace-time history. None of this would have been possible were it not for the discovery of the actual wreck on September 1, 1985. After years of speculation and educated guesses that had turned up nothing, explorer Robert Ballard, an oceanographer and former Navy captain, in

conjunction with a French expedition tracked a debris trail to the wreckage. A year after the remains of the Titanic were discovered, more oceanographers went to explore the sections of bow and stern and the extensive debris field. In 1993, the company RMS Titanic Inc. gained the rights to collect found artefacts and launch expeditions to the ship. Many argue that collecting items from the wreckage violates a sacred resting ground and that all the disturbances are causing the ship to deteriorate faster than it would if left alone. Others blame the multimilliondollar expeditions for causing regular and unnecessary damage. But those same expeditions have dispelled some of the myths surrounding what actually happened that night almost 100 years ago. Regardless, time is running out for researchers, some of whom claim the wreck will not exist 50 years from now. Ironically, the act of discovering the Titanic may be the one thing that results in its final destruction and the loss of a treasured legend.

What attracted me to the golf course was its best kept secret (not anymore!) the Academy Restaurant and Lounge. Located right behind the swish lobby and pro-shop, the restaurant and lounge offers all day dining in a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy Mediterranean and Arabic style cuisine with daily and weekly specials. The restaurant also offers a delicious selection of Forte Teas, freshly brewed coffee, fresh juices and a beverage service. The interiors are functional, no-nonsense and do not take away from the main focus, which is the vast expanse of the golf course, partly visible from the sit out area of the restaurant. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by St. John Kelliher, Almouj Golf General Manager, who then proceeded to introduce us to Michael Blumberg, F&B Service Manager. St. John says, “Almouj Golf is a part of the lifestyle offering to the residents of The Wave Muscat. The golf course is, what we call in our business, a signature golf course, designed by no other than the incredible Greg Norman. It is an 18-hole championship golf course, which

‘GREEN’ CHARACTER André C. Meyerhans on reducing carbon footprints, sustainable buildings and green technology

Brise-Soleil

the room and activity.

Bahrain World Trade Center

T

he US Department of Energy’s Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC) is one of many agencies that establishes county lists on carbon dioxide emissions per capita, the so called carbon footprint. The figure basically indicates the sustainability of the lifestyle in a country and should be, from an environmental point of view, as low as possible. Factors that generally raise the carbon emission are: more developed standards of living, an economy based on industry (as compared to agriculture and services) and a harsh or even hostile climate. In recent years, countries of the Arab peninsula concentrated in the top ranks of all carbon footprint evaluations. The list in front of me locates six of the fifteen most carbon emitting countries in the Middle East – Bahrain on rank five, Oman on fourteen. The accuracy of the grading might be questioned but the tendency cannot be disputed. So, what can we do about it? The answer is sustainable buildings and green technology! Both become hot topics in recent years in the Middle East – and rightly so. The offer ranges from simple solutions, so called low-tech solutions that involve little technology, to most sophisticated systems, the high-tech

62

solutions which are latest gizmos of science. Let’s have a look at them and see what benefit they provide. LIGHT Out of two reasons, we wish to keep direct sunlight out of the building in this part of the world: one, the light is too strong which creates irritating contrasts and, two, direct sunlight means radiation gain which ultimately turns into heat. A low tech solution focusses on small windows, brise-soleils (shading devices over or around the windows) and shading vegetation. High-tech solutions play with coated and tinted windows or intelligent facades which basically increases and decreases light exposure as needed. Natural light affects humans positively and is preferred over artificial light. This led to an interesting high-tech idea which channels natural sunlight in a highly reflective duct and through a series of lenses into otherwise dark corners of the building. Other ways to improve your eco-footprint: use energy-saving light bulbs (that transform a higher percentage of electricity into light instead of heat), switch off lights when leaving the room, regulate light by movement detectors and adapt light intensity according to

ENERGY Everybody knows the photovoltaic (PV) panels often placed on top of buildings. These arrays convert sunlight into (direct) current. Then, an inverter transforms the direct current into alternating current (AC) required by your appliances. The main challenge with the PV solution lies in the availability of the power in regards of time and amount. One achieves this by either feeding the power generated into the main grid (simple solution) or by storing it in a battery-like device (expensive solution). Unfortunately, no government in the Middle East currently allows private people to enter the main power grid. There are also only limited programs supporting PV solutions. However, I trust this will change in the future. CLIMATE The most important point for sustainable buildings is how to keep the climate inside the house comfortable. And the easiest way to achieve this is sufficient insulation. The entire skin of the building – walls, roofs, windows and doors – should be insulated. The least insulated part of the house is the weakest link in the chain and determines how well the scorching heat is kept outside. So, if doors and windows are not tight or their frames not insulated, other temperature protection loses much of its effectiveness. Here some simple yet efficient design concepts: Revolving doors and vestibules ensure that in high-traffic entrances air exchange is minimised,

Solar array, Masdar

Desert Garden

Patterned brise-soleil metal grid, Qatar

hinged windows close tighter than sliding ones and aligning frames with the wall insulation avoids energy bridges. WATER Many arid areas require energy intense desalination processes in order to provide sufficient sweet water. Green buildings reuse the scarce wet and recycle water for cooling or irrigation purpose – may it be from condensation within the air conditioning or gray water, meaning potable water that has been used but is not polluted. Especially today’s landscapes demand much water. Sustainability also involves proper selection of vegetation. Certain plants, especially the endemic types, use much less water than others. LIFESPAN The lifespan includes not only the environmental impact duration of use of a good but also during the production process as well as during the course of decomposition. Extending the usage period is, therefore, ecologically sensible and sometimes even trendy: an old building nicely renovated unveils its charm again, an abandoned shed redesigned as art gallery attracts the urban crowd and the old window shutter converts into a nice coffee table. Often ignored in the green technology

Solarshading calculation is the beginning and the end of a product life: how much energy is required and emission produced during the creation process and how much of the same during the decomposition? Especially high-tech products often lose much of their “green” character when looking at them properly. If this is the case, remember: low-tech might be the solution – doing nothing isn’t!

INTERVIEW

AN OLFACTORY EXPLORATION Sergio Momo, founder of the luxury perfume house Xerjoff, on his quest to create more than just fragrances….

Born 47 years ago in Turin, Italy, Sergio Momo travelled the world at a young age, following his father around the globe. After completing his studies at the art and design school in Turin, Sergio moved to the UK to collaborate with prestigious London design agencies in various forms of media and advertising. Soon, the love of his homeland Italy lured him back to pursue one of his greatest passions, the world of luxury perfumes. Following a natural attraction to beauty and encouraged by an interest in the world of luxury, Sergio founded the perfume house of Xerjoff in 2004 together with Dominique Salvo, Xerjoff’s research and development director. Through years of development, Xerjoff has gained strong alliances with many renowned Italian artists who collaborate closely to create the rare and precious art pieces. International and Italian noses, painters and sculptors, jewellery designers and glassblowers, diamond cutters and wood engravers work in harmony to create the precious scents created in Grasse (South of France), Spain and Italy. The result is a series of unique creations of limited edition availability

64

reserved for only the truest of connoisseurs. Signature spoke to Xerjoff’s master perfumer; a man who goes beyond creating “just fragrances” and creates intense emotions developed around multi-sensorial aspects: the story, the look, the touch, the smell, and the memories. What does the name Xerjoff mean? How did the concept come about? “Xerjoff is a nickname from my grandmother (she was from former Yugoslavia); from Sergio to Xerjoff is a dialect personalisation.” What was the first fragrance you created? What was the inspiration? “The first perfumes were HOMME and ELLE from the XERJOFF XJ 17/17 Art Collection. The flacons were sculpted cut from precious quartz stones and the perfumes were distilled by master perfumers in Grasse, South of France, XJ 17/17 Homme is a tribute to a forgotten classical men’s perfume based on leather notes and XJ 17/17 Elle is a luxurious explosion of fruit and flowers from the extraction of the most noble of plants. With the aid of the latest technology that accentuate

the unprecedented character of the fragrances, truly special compositions, combining tradition and modernity. Both perfumes inspired by history and ethereal beauty. A patient search for the ingredients, gathered during a trip round the world, witnesses of the natural and cultural diversities of the Xerjoff creations.” The beautiful flacons are so much part of the Xerjoff story. What is the creative process that goes behind them? “Talking about XerJoff means going beyond the olfactory dimension and entering a wider universe. An important work of art like perfumes needs to be preserved and presented with other forms of art. Xerjoff is a multi-sensorial concept. Precious Italian handicraft and richness of nature walk hand-in-hand in all of our creations, where art and skill of ‘man’s work’ come together with art of perfumery, adding to this archetypical alliance to offer the world the very best works.” What would you say is the olfactory signature of a Xerjoff fragrance? “All our creations represent the character of Maison Xerjoff, spread across our five unique

collection is named after the city of DHOFAR. In fact, the region of Dhofar was the place where a famous lunar meteorite fell. Dhofar’s traditional history calls to mind many of the great classic fragrances with its complex, aromatic blend of lavender, orange flower, and balsamic notes. A warm, spicy heart emerges with the clovelike touch of carnation and what smells like cardamom, luscious sandalwood, patchouli, and a hint of leather. Such rich and complex ingredients in perfumery inspired me also did the lively trade history of Dhofar with many countries and cultures of the world. 'Dhofar' or better “Dulfar”,as it was originally called, has been mentioned in Marco Polo’s travel journals in 1285.” Five cities/places do you think have played a major role in the history of perfumery and why? “Well for sure from the historical point of view, the town of Grasse is considered the world’s capital of perfume, and still is as far Xerjoff is concerned since most of the XJ perfume collections are produced and distilled there. Paris, of course, also made the history of modern perfumery. The city gave birth to brands like Coty, Guerlain, Patou, Caron, Chanel. London has also created in the past wonderful perfume brands, because of the colonies and world trade, English perfumes always had inspiring classical and ethnic mood which I particularly love.

collections. As far as I am concerned, XJ 17/17 HOMME has a particular place in my heart.” In what ways have you grown as a perfumer over the past decade, how has your approach to olfaction changed? “Passion is what drives any creative person, together with constant research and experience. Of course, for me olfaction is one of the most important sensorial elements in order to survive… "I judge many things around me from the attention to details, olfaction is one of them. Most important is to perceive the various elements in nature to get inspired.” Of the five senses, which sense do you think is the most important for the perfumer? “All FIVE of them, for sure, even the sixth…All senses together with experience play important

roles in creating perfume concepts. Usually what is the most difficult to explain is the most valuable asset that can build on a concept, the harmony of all senses is like the blend of a good perfume.” Is this your debut in Oman? Do you think the sights and sounds of Oman will inspire you to create something new? “Absolutely amazing. Nature still plays an important role in this beautiful land and its proud people blends perfectly with the character of the land. The unique mix of the mountains and sea next to each other creates breathtaking views, colours and indeed scented natural aromas. "Oman is an inspiring land were art and nature create a unique recipe and I will surely create something around it. Actually, one of our early perfumes from our XJ SHOOTING STARS

Cologne is the German city which is wellknown for the production of the Eau de Cologne since 1709 when by Giovanni Maria Farina created and produced the original Eau de Cologne; “a fragrance that reminds me of an Italian spring morning, of mountain daffodils and orange blossoms after the rain," GM Farina wrote to his brother. The name Cologne was given in honour of his new hometown in Germany. Personally, I find Marrakech in Morocco extremely inspiring, not so much for its perfume production, as much for the uniqueness of the souks with its blend of fruits, spices, tea, flowers… mixed with the scent of the warm desert. Lately I have travelled to the forests of Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand in search of suitable plantation of Agarwood for our latest perfume collection: OUD STARS. This has indeed been an extraordinary experience, which has opened my mind to further olfactory directions and creative experimentations." Xerjoff range is available at Capital Store, Qurum

Do you take looking after yourself seriously; do you ever have any treatments such as massages etc?

"When I have time, yeah, I like to have a massage and wind down, but that’s about it. When work has been busy, or I have been doing a lot of work its great to have a bit of time out and re-charge." Do you think it’s important to always look your best?

“I think being active does so much for you in terms of emotional and mental well being, as well as the obvious physical benefits of staying in good shape. Sports really do train your mind, and help you stay focused and disciplined about things in all areas of your life. I always have a clear head after a game or a workout and I find I can think clearer and plan things better.” How do you stay healthy? What is your workout regime?

"I try and hit the gym 4-5 times a week, maybe more if I can. My job is such that I need to stay in shape and keep fit so I try and do lots of cardio/boxing and then some weights with bench presses and sit ups. I find that I feel my best when I’m playing sports and staying active; I see it as a way to re-charge."

Quick Takes How would you describe The One Sport in 3 words? “Energising, refreshing and wearable.” Is fragrance an everyday habit or just something to wear on special occasions? “It’s both. Some fragrances are great for an everyday thing, getting out of the shower and just getting nice fresh scent on you is cool. But you might have a slightly stronger scent for a night out or a special event.” What do you like doing during your free time? “I do like to relax and catch up with friends. I also like to be outside and play golf or be out on the ranch whenever I can, as being active does a lot for my peace of mind; I tend to feel a little restless otherwise! I really like eating out and travelling. Seeing my family is so important and I always try and make time for that.” How would you describe your personal style? “I’m casual, and I like to feel comfortable in what I wear. Of course, I appreciate well-cut stylish clothes, and when I have to I will suit up too, it depends on the occasion.”

SOLE TO SOUL The celebrated shoe designer Guiseppe Zanotti was in Dubai and spent the afternoon with some of the city’s most prominent fashionistas at Voi Restaurant, Jumeriah Zabeel Saray recently. Voi was transformed into an exotic sanctuary of birds of paradise, especially for the occasion with hydrangea flowers dotted over the tables. The event saw women dine on a French-Vietnamese menu of vanilla-scented cod and Valhrona chocolate soufflé and mingle with Giuseppe Zanotti in a private and intimate setting, getting their shoes signed along with personalised sketches. The festivities continued in the evening with an in-store party, where Giuseppe greeted over 150 fans and signed shoes for them. Giuseppe's trip to Dubai was to celebrate the regional expansion of Giuseppe Zanotti Design. He now has stores in the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Lebanon. Rosemin Manji caught up with Guiseppe at the event. Here are the excerpts... How and when did you know you wanted to be a shoe designer? “I wanted to be a shoe designer since I was a child. I was inspired by my mother, who was a seamstress. I still remember the pair of shoes that her customers tried with the suits that my mother stitched." You branched out into jewellery. Which other new directions do you see your business expanding in? “Yes, four seasons ago I launched a new jewellery collection and it has been a great success. I also recently developed a sneakers line for men and women. So I still have not had time to think of the next project." Where do you take your inspirations from each season? “From every moment of life, music, art, and also life on the street life.” What are your thoughts on the Middle East? “I like the Middle East very much and often visit for holidays as well. It is always a pleasure to meet style-conscious people here, to whom beauty and elegance seem to be very important.” When was that ‘ah-ha’ moment when you knew you had made it? “I have never felt this ‘ah-ha’ moment. Giuseppe Zanotti was born in San Mauro Pascoli, a small village on the Adriatic Riviera. His strong passion for music, fashion and art drove him towards the world of beauty and accessories in the early 80s. Enchanted by feet and native to a village of luxury shoemaking tradition, he started his career as a freelance designer working with international luxury fashion houses. The big leap came in 1994 when he decided to take over a small shoemaking company, Vicini spa, and to devote himself to an ambitious project: designing and manufacturing his own shoes. So, with a small workshop employing just a handful of shoe experts he started his challenge with passion and steadfastness. His first collection was launched in New York City and his temporary showroom was just a room in the Plaza Hotel. Since then, the most prestigious specialty stores worldwide have been carrying Giuseppe Zanotti Design footwear and there are more than 60 flagship stores in the most important fashion capitals of the world.

THE ASTON MARTIN V12 ZAGATO IS ONE OF ITS KIND. DEEPA RAJAN QUIZZES MAREK REICHMAN, DIRECTOR OF DESIGN FOR ASTON MARTIN, ON WHAT MAKES THIS MACHINE SO UNIQUE…

In May 2011, yet another stunning Aston Martin creation made its debut at the Villa d’Este concours. Entered in the Concept Cars and Prototypes class, the Aston Martin V12 Zagato wowed the judges and the crowd, taking first place against impressive opposition. In June, the Villa d’Este winner – along with the second prototype car – made the V12 Zagato’s world racing debut at the gruelling 24 hour endurance race held at the Nürburgring. Both cars completed the ultimate durability test, continuing Aston Martin’s 100 per cent finishing record in this notoriously tough race. The car, which has now got a production version (being built in strictly limited numbers of up to 150 cars), strengthens the partnership between Aston Martin and Zagato that started over 50 years ago with the DB4 GT Zagato. The V12 Zagato, hand assembled at the company’s

70

global headquarters in Gaydon, England, is based on the highly acclaimed V12 Vantage and features a beautiful hand-crafted aluminium and carbon fibre body along with a bespoke interior. Initial design concepts for the V12 Zagato were explored in early 2010. Inspired by Zagato’s bold and individual styling signatures Aston Martin’s Director of Design, Marek Reichman, and his Gaydon-based design team relished the challenge of shaping the V12 Zagato, creating a car that pushes the boundaries of Aston Martin’s design language, yet pays tribute to the DB4GT Zagato. Demonstrating Aston Martin’s ability to rapidly bring ideas to fruition the Zagato programme quickly gained momentum, the design team working hand-in-hand with engineers and artisans to complete the build of a

pair of concept cars in the spring of 2011. The rest is history. The production version debuted at the Kuwait Concours d’ Elegance recently. Signature caught up with Reichman to find out what makes the car tick… Zagatos throughout the history of Aston Martin have always been exclusive, a class apart from its fellows. What makes this newest incarnation of the Zagato live up to the reputation? "The new Aston Martin V12 Zagato is a unique collaboration between Aston Martin and Zagato in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the iconic DB4GT Zagato. It is an honest interpretation of the Aston Martin/Zagato relationship for the modern age. A truly bespoke gentleman’s sports car. The basis of the original Aston Martin & Zagato relationship was to produce a car which

chosen for the debut of the exclusive V12 Zagato. Kuwait is a country at the heart of one of the most influential regions for Aston Martin and as the Zagato embodies the spirit of bespoke, it seemed right for us to first show the prototype and now the road car in the surrounds of globally recognised Concours d’Elegance events – first in Europe and now in the Middle East.” Will any of these vehicles be coming to dealerships in the Middle East, or has each unit already been spoken for? “The V12 Zagato is on sale now and we anticipate that a number of the 150 cars will be purchased by discerning collectors in the Middle East.”

car and race proven both at Nürburgring 24-hour race and as basis for new Vantage GT3 race car. “The body of the V12 Zagato is made of handcrafted aluminium and carbon fibre. The craftsmanship of these two materials ensures a quality execution of the beautiful original design. Entering the V12 Zagatos in the Nürburgring 24hour race was an extension of the company’s philosophy of signing-off new products by entering a car which is as close to the road car as possible and publically subjecting it to the toughest 24-hour test. Following completion of this exercise and with considerable global interest in the car, we were able to confirm the V12 Zagato for production.“ You have stated that you will be building around 150 models for the road version. Should demand exceed supply, would you consider extending the production run? “In keeping with the exclusive nature of previous Aston Martin Zagato projects, production of the V12 Zagato will be strictly limited and depending on final global interest we envisage a production run of up to a maximum of 150.” could be raced successfully, later leading to a road car interpretation. The V12 Zagato was initially previewed during 2011 in the form of two endurance race car concepts, the first of which debuted at Villa D’Este in Italy and won the Concorso d’Eleganza Design Award for Concept Cars and Prototypes. Just four weeks later both cars went on to compete at the Nürburgring 24hour race where both cars finished, continuing the company’s 100 per cent finishing record at the race. Shortly after the race Aston Martin confirmed plans to put the V12 Zagato into production in road car form during 2012." What differences are there between the race version Zagato V12 and the road model? “The V12 Zagato takes engineering underpinning from the V12 Vantage – critically acclaimed road

What are your favourite elements about this car? “There are so many special elements about this car. The exterior detailing, the ‘double bubble’ roof, the unique wheels and the stunning interior to name but a few. The marriage of the unique design DNA of two companies who have worked together for half a century to create the ultimate collectors car.” Any special anecdotes you would like to share with us? “Owing to the handcraftsmanship detail in the car, each V12 Zagato will take around 2,000 man hours to produce. V12 Vantage base car is one of the most exclusive modern day Aston Martin road cars; the V12 Zagato takes this to a new extreme of bespoke personalisation and exclusivity.” Could you suggest/describe the ideal road that the Zagato V12 should be driven on? "A long sweeping open road…" For more details contact Al Muhannad Al Hashar – Aston Martin Oman showroom

The first production debuted at Kuwait Concours d’ Elegance? Why did you choose this particular event? “The Kuwait Concours d’Elegance, in its third successive year, is the only event of its type in the Middle East and plays host to some of the world’s finest automotive art from over 19 countries. Having gone from strength to strength, this event has become the earliest of its type in what is considered by car connoisseurs as ‘the season’ and sees some of the world’s most influential collectors attending and sharing their passion. "At the heart of such an established and important market for Aston Martin, the Kuwait Concours d’Elegance this year was supported by Premier International Motors Group, Aston Martin’s dealer partner in Kuwait as well as having been

Important information is projected onto the windscreen in the driver´s direct field of vision, all of which allows drivers to view all of the information in this ergonomically excellent position without having to divert their gaze from the road ahead."

You are a Tom Cruise fan and you have seen all his films. So, chances are you have not missed the latest installment of the Mission Impossible series either. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol comes with the usual trappings of a fast-paced action thriller complete with sand storms and car chases. Of course, the sand storm wows you, but not as much as the car that sees Cruise and co-star Paula Patton race through the maddening Mumbai traffic. Say hello to the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car, which has been recognised as having the most sophisticated technology and striking design among the current concept electric supercars. Signature posed a few questions to Claudia Müller, responsible for BMW International Product Placement, about the BMW-MI4 collaboration and more. How did the collaboration between BMW and MI-4 come about? "The first contact was established via our

Global Entertainment agency PROPAGANDA GEM. Our objective was to showcase the latest BMW models and a vision of future mobility with the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics and BMW ConnectedDrive. As the Mission Impossible franchise is famous for using the latest communication technologies and BMW’s innovative cars and technologies helped telling the movie story in a new way, there were mutual benefits seen by both partners." Can you tell us about the car(s) that was/were used in the film? Why were they chosen and were there any special modifications made in the cars specifically for MI-4? "The cars used are the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics, the BMW 6 Series Convertible, the BMW X3 and the BMW 1 Series. There were no modifications made for participation in the movie." Much has been made of the driver interface

Predictive software is very advanced today, so how long will it be before we see such potentially life-saving features such as the interface on BMW vehicles? "Most of the BMW ConnectedDrive technology shown in MI:4 are already available in most of the recent BMW models. Others shown in the movie are in development stage by our engineers for the next generation of BMW ConnectedDrive." In the film, we see new BMW models driving through the streets of exotic locations like Mumbai and Dubai, is this an indication of a change in marketing profile as emerging and developing economies take a greater slice of BMW sales profile? "Decision on location sites were done by Paramount not by BMW." Were any BMW cars harmed during the making of the movie? "In the crash scenes there were BMW cars damaged as scripted." The ritual ends with a dab of refreshing after shave toner or balm.” THE TREATMENT “I opted for the Special Spaloon scrub, a 45-minute treatment, which uses a scrub specially prepared by Spaloon using natural ingredients. I must admit that this is one of the best scrubs I have used. Not too harsh, it invigorates and revitalises the body and cleanses deep, polishes and softens to perfection. I followed this up with a 30-minute full back massage. I had to move to another room for the massage which was a bit inconvenient, but all in all the massage did exactly what it was supposed to do. It left me feeling rejuvenated, relaxed and stress-free.” THE VERDICT “I would rate it as a satisfying experience. The spa’s friendly staff and innovative treatments make it a convenient one-stop shop for men looking for complete grooming services in a comfortable and relaxing environment. My next visit is already planned, and yes you guessed it right, I am opting for their Spaloon Special Scrub again.”

Must Try

Gone are those days when ‘spas’ and ‘men’ could not be used in the same sentence. Today’s spas have become gender-neutral and are even being founded specifically for men, proving that men have caught on to a concept that women have known about for years. Today’s man also seems to realise that there is more to relaxation that sitting in front of the television, or playing his regular round of golf every now and then. It is not about masculinity at all, it is about finding a level to de-stress yourself with the help of skin treatments and a complete body overhaul. It is about re-energising your batteries. Here in the Sultanate, the recently-opened Spaloon has the distinction of being the first male-only spa. Located in the heart of Qurum, Spaloon has been designed as a grooming and relaxation centre incorporating traditional and modern approach to male grooming, creating a brand new concept that stretches to offer an unsurpassed spa and saloon experience for the

modern man. The spa uses world-renowned products created by aromatherapy experts using ingredients that are quintessentially Arabian. Curious enough to know if Spaloon is indeed all that and more, Signature decided to send our hands-on man of the world, Qais Al Khonji to do a review of the spa. AMBIENCE & SERVICE “The Zen décor infuses hues of red and black to create a masculine, yet relaxing feel. Ambient lighting coupled with scented candles create a harmonious feeling of space and light. Upon arrival, I was greeted by Richard, a friendly member of staff, with refreshing green tea. He then took time to explain the range of spa and grooming treatments they had on offer. They offer many spa packages which include scrubs, massages and other grooming treatments, including facials, manicure and pedicure. An in-house hair stylist is also available to make your simple shaving and hair-cut experience all that more special. Do try the ‘Corporate Shave’, Spaloon’s Signature Shave. It includes

THAI-SU MASSAGE Thai Massage combined with Japanese strokes of Shiatsu, healing method that applies pressure and stretching along the body meridians and energy channels in order to stimulate physical relaxation and reduce stress. It is a form of "touch communication" that helps to balance energy flow. No lotions or oils are used.
