The Suppliers’
Julie A. Fream
President and CEO
The first year of the Trump administration has been a busy time for OESA. We’ve been working with our MEMA advocacy team to address issues that are critical to your business. Among the most important is the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Changes to NAFTA will likely impact your company, and we have dedicated significant resources to voice the needs and concerns of the supplier community.
Our position on NAFTA is clear: NAFTA works, and while modernization is desirable, the U.S. should do no harm to this critical trade agreement. We have been in discussions with the U.S. trade negotiators and have held meetings with other interested trade organizations – the American Automotive Policy Council, the Association of Global Automakers, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, and the National Association of Manufacturers – to ensure we have a unified voice to lead the negotiations. We have also worked with our counterparts in Mexico and Canada to identify improvements to the NAFTA agreement that meet the needs of all parties, while preserving the portions of NAFTA that are beneficial to our industry. Thanks to the efforts of MEMA, the supplier voice is strong in D.C. Legislators and regulators know that more than 871,000 Americans are directly employed by the automotive parts manufacturing industry. Together with indirect and employmentinduced jobs, the total employment impact of the motor vehicle parts manufacturing industry is 4.26 million jobs, an increase of nearly 18 percent from 3.26 million in 2012. NAFTA renegotiations will likely change the landscape of the global automotive marketplace; OESA is proud to champion the business interests of the supplier community during this critical time. As always, please feel free to contact me at 248.430.5963 or jfream@oesa.org. Sincerely,
Staying abreast of the latest NAFTA developments is important; getting involved is crucial. Visit mema.org or contact any OESA team member to learn how you can get involved.

INDUSTRY OUTLOOK
SURGE IN BATTERY ELECTRIC VEHICLES USHERS IN NEW COMPETITIVE REALITIES Mike Jackson Executive Director, Strategy and Research 248.430.5954 │ mjackson@oesa.org
"We still don't have a viable economic model for delivering an electric car…and you can’t run economic entities on losses" Sergio Marchionne Fiat Chrysler CEO 10/9/2017 – Remarks at NYSE
4 │ OESA News - 2017 Fourth Quarter
Electric vehicles present a historic crossroads for the global automotive industry. Recent media and analyst interest, combined with increasing investment by both traditional and new manufacturers, highlight the growing importance of this vehicle technology. Despite this intense focus, the industry has not delivered a profitable battery electric vehicle (BEV). As Sergio Marchionne recently stated, “We still don’t have a viable economic model for delivering an electric car… and you can’t run economic entities on losses.” Perhaps the most obvious example of this is Tesla. From the beginning, the scope of Tesla’s ambitions for EV adaption were staggering. The challenge of simultaneously funding product development, building charging infrastructure and growing sales channels required tremendous investment. Tesla’s recent efforts to produce 500,000 units annually for the Model 3 demonstrate their need for higher volumes to generate a return on investment.
INDUSTRY OUTLOOK Until recently, most of the traditional automakers cautiously entered the electric vehicle market, due to limited customer demand and a challenging business case to support the necessary investment. Manufacturers primarily used EVs to enable their product fleet to comply with emissions and fuel economy standards. However, with regulations governing emissions and fuel economy intensifying around the world, traditional automotive manufacturers have announced plans to launch +100 BEVs by early next decade. As the number of BEV programs increases, the need to launch programs with sustainable volumes and an appropriate return on investment becomes critical for automotive manufacturers. As a result, these new BEV programs will usher in an era of significant cost-cutting in manufacturers’ internal combustion and diesel engine vehicle programs. Cost cutting will be necessary to free up capital for investment in the new electric vehicle programs. Additionally, BEV program launches and changes to automakers investment strategies will profoundly impact original equipment suppliers. The new vehicle launches present opportunities for suppliers nimble enough to invest in future product lines while protecting existing operational profitability. Suppliers will need to carefully assess new business opportunities to ensure resources and capital investment are optimized. Electric vehicles are driving profound and lasting changes to the global automotive industry. The key to maintaining profitability for both automotive manufacturers and suppliers will require careful analysis of current product portfolios while managing strategic business successes as BEV’s are launched into the global marketplace. For more information, contact Mike Jackson, Executive Director, Strategy and Research at 248.430.5954 or mjackson@oesa.org.

GUEST COLUMN
What’s your IQ? Assess your international IQ with these 11 questions Thinking about expanding your global footprint? How internationally aware are you? Take our quick true-false quiz and find out.
1
Profits earned from activities outside the United States aren’t subject to federal income tax. False. Profits generated by a U.S. company are subject to U.S. income tax no matter where in the world those profits are earned.
2
A joint venture with a local partner is the best way to enter a foreign market. False. Joint ventures only make sense when that local party provides something you can’t provide on your own.
3
You’re only in the “considering” phase of international operations, so there’s no need to include the topic in management team meetings. False. Keep the topic front and center — after all, your choices are critically important to the business — even in the earliest stages of consideration.
4
Buying and selling in dollars gives you immunity to currency fluctuations. False. Maybe you don’t conduct transactions in international currencies, but many of your customers and suppliers likely will.
5
Skepticism is an ally when you’re running an international operation. True. Healthy skepticism is a good idea. As we like to say, “Trust, but verify.” Conduct independent reviews of best practices, regulatory compliance, and efficiency.

GUEST COLUMN
6
U.S. cultural norms are widely known around the world. False. Don’t assume U.S. cultural practices are known or used outside the country. In Mexico, for example, “mañana” doesn’t necessarily imply that something will be done “tomorrow” but rather “not today.”
7
You can sell inventory to your wholly owned subsidiaries outside the United States at any price. False. U.S. transfer pricing rules, and rules of most of its trading partners, require related parties to conduct business at arm’s length and maintain documentation to support all pricing.
8
Your customer wants you to have a facility everywhere they do, so you should start the process. False. Taking a regional, rather than country-specific, approach can help you meet customer requirements without breaking the bank.
9
Payments to a foreign person for goods or services, don’t require the same (domestic) documentation. False. You wouldn’t supply a foreign recipient with a 1099, but you still must comply with payment reporting requirements for certain payments to foreign recipients.
10
Your subsidiary’s statutory audit is reliable evidence of the accuracy of its financial records. False. Statutory audits normally use local auditing and accounting standards and processes, which differ from those of the United States. The parent company could easily miss important information if it relies solely on a statutory audit.
11
Your private company’s financial statements are public information when operating abroad. True. Local governments typically require statutory audit filing, and it becomes public record.
How did you do? 11 correct: Your international IQ is high. 9-10 correct: You’re fairly internationally savvy. 7-8 correct: You’re somewhat internationally aware. 5-6 correct: You could use some international guidance. Less than 5 correct: Give us a call, we can help.
