l On 6th April 2009, the Health & Safety Executive launched a new simplified version of the Health & Safety Law poster. l Displaying the Health & Safety poster is a legal requirement in every workplace in the UK.

l New European regulations on the classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures implemented by the UN CHS criteria in all EU member states came into legal effect in 01/2009.

l The Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 imposes a duty on all employers to take steps to ensure the health and safety of their employees and third parties (such as customers and workmen), including controlling risks such as slips, trips and falls.

足Smoking at work l Smoke-free (Premises and Enforcement) Regulations and Smoke-free (Signs) Regulations came into force in the UK throughout 2007. l Smoking is no longer permitted in enclosed or substantially enclosed premises or vehicles open to the public such as pubs, restaurants, etc. l It is required to display no smoking signs at the entrance of premises and to convey a no smoking message in the premises.

Use of Pictorial Symbol for Emergency Escape We recommend that the SAME DESIGN is used throughout the building and consistency is maintained. Running person pictogram inside the doorway. Having achieved the highest comprehensibility rating from international tests, this design has been adopted by BS 5499 part 4 2000 and endorsed by the HSE in their Guidance Notes as satisfying the requirements of the regulations.

Installation guide

In recent months we have seen the adoption of the new standard, BS EN 7010. Safety signs in the workplace have moved from being an ‘International standard’ to a European norm (meaning that the contents of the standard has moved into UK and EU law). ISO 7010 has been developed to provide consistency in design across the EU. The new designs have been phased in and all our signs follow the Health and Safety (Safety Signs & Signals) regulations of 1966 and conform to BS EN ISO 7010 where applicable. Some of the new designs have seen changes in the symbols whereas others will look practically unchanged. Although for the present both designs still meet safety obligations, some Health and Safety guidance recommends that the two types of signage (BS 5499 and EN ISO 7010) are not mixed within the workplace. You may therefore wish to change your current signage to comply and when looking to purchase new signage, ensure the signs meet with the new EN ISO 7010 standards.
