SUMMER SEASON AT DERBy THEATRE We are delighted to introduce Derby Theatre’s summer season, including two brand new Derby Theatre co-productions.We join with Hull Truck Theatre to present A Taste Of Honey, Shelagh Delaney’s powerful and poignant tale of a young girl’s journey into adulthood, directed by Mark Babych (Cooking with Elvis). Later in the season, April in Paris, written and directed by John Godber brings a star cast (yet to be announced) to the Derby Theatre stage. There’s also a look forward to our autumn season featuring our co-production with Pilot Theatre and Theatre Royal Stratford East, Antigone, continuing our exploration of Greek myth from The Odyssey; as well as our homegrown production of A Christmas Carol for the festive season. Both these productions are on sale now, along with our summer season. Watch out online and in the next brochure for our next ‘Made in Derby’ show. As well as this, we have the very best touring theatre from across the UK, including Headlong’s Spring Awakening – a return visit from the award-winning company who brought us The Seagull last year. Add to this a programme of innovative, provocative and humorous work in the Studio, our Derby Theatre Opens Up productions, and it’s a cracking season! Alongside the work we produce and present on stage we offer multiple opportunities for learning and development for students, audiences, teachers, professional artists and the amateur community. The ‘learning theatre model’ we are piloting has not just excited us, in 12 months we have received a lot of endorsement for this way of working. Along with the University of Derby, we have won the Times Higher Education Award for Excellence and Innovation in the Arts. Our pioneering work in this area has also resulted in us securing a number of successful funding bids and has been held up as an example of innovative practice in the House of Lords. We would like to thank you, our audience, for spreading the word that Derby Theatre is a producing theatre making high quality work and opening up the creative potential of the city. Take a look through our brochure and we look forward to seeing you at a performance, workshop or in The Bistro soon.

WriTTEN BY Shelagh Delaney DirECTED BY Mark Babych STArriNG rebecca ryan Shameless, Waterloo Road

Salford, 1959. 17 year-old Jo is desperate to break free from her vulgar, wayward, man-hunting mother, Helen. Resilient and feisty, Jo’s instinct for survival and happiness leads her to a taste of honey when she falls in love with Jimmy, a black sailor on shore leave. Abandoned by her mother, and left to cope on her own, Jo’s courage is tested yet again when Jimmy returns to sea, and she discovers she’s pregnant. Defiant in the face of convention, Jo moves in with her friend Geoffrey, a young art student, who assumes the role of surrogate father to her unborn child. As their relationship deepens, Jo discovers that her independent spirit is both her torment and her salvation. One of the most influential plays of its generation, A Taste of Honey was written when Shelagh Delaney was only 18. It burst onto the stage in 1961 in a production that took the West End by storm. Part of the post-war kitchen sink movement, the play later became a classic of British cinema.

Scraps of paper with hastily written messages of love; requests for salted bacon and shaving brushes; letters telling of harvests, gas attacks, births and deaths; all were carefully carried between English homes and the chaos of the trenches. To mark the centenary of the First World War, Nottingham Playhouse have created The Second Minute working with Nottingham writer Andy Barrett. Based on research into the letter collection from the archive of the Sherwood Foresters regiment, this simply staged, poignant and uplifting new show weaves together heroic, comic, and heart-breaking tales of soldiers and families through their own words.

PLUS ONE Major arts and cultural organisations in Derby have joined forces with Barnardo’s, Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council to give children in care the chance to experience live performance, film and workshops in the city. plus One aims to inspire young people and spark an on-going interest in the arts and culture in Derby. For some young people, it will be the first time they experience opportunities of this kind with their foster family or carers.

Thanks to amazing support for this campaign, over £10,000 has already been raised and is currently being used to fund transformative cultural experiences. If you want to contribute, enquire at Box Office when booking tickets for either Derby Theatre, Déda, Derby LIvE, QUAD or Sinfonia viva or visit our website: derbytheatre.co.uk/individual-giving/plus-one
