WELCOME TO OUR SPRING SEASON Our spring season offers up a wealth of great shows, and I hope you will be able to join us for one or all of them. Of course, before then, we have two fantastic festive shows on offer and I’m delighted to welcome Oliver O’Shea to direct the timeless classic, A Christmas Carol, whilst I create Little Red Riding Hood, a magical gem of a show for under 7s in our Studio. We then follow up with new co-productions with Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch, where Douglas Rintoul’s Macbeth is bound to be a spine-chilling feast, and Crongton Knights with Pilot Theatre, which follows our hugely successful co-production of Noughts & Crosses last year. For Easter, we have another extravaganza of a family show for you Treasure Island. Just like The Jungle Book last year, this production will have full BSL integration and captioning, live music and plenty of magic for all the family. I am also delighted to inform you that we recently won the UK Theatre Award for Excellence in Arts Education, so why not get in touch to find out how you can study with us, participate in a community workshop or support the work that we do across the city. Don’t forget that we also invite you to join us for Community Cuppa, a chance to meet and chat with new and old friends from all areas of our community over a free cuppa and a biscuit. Don’t forget to tweet me @SarahBrigham, send me a letter or email to tell me what you’re enjoying this season. I look forward to seeing you soon.

ORIGINAL STORY

Charles Dickens ADAPTED BY

Neil Duffield

DIRECTED BY

Oliver O’Shea from the original production directed by Sarah Brigham DESIGNER

Neil Irish

FRIDAY 29 NOVEMBER – SATURDAY 4 JANUARY

Neil Duffield’s stunning adaptation of Charles Dickens’ treasured novel returns to the Derby Theatre stage for Christmas 2019. On Christmas Eve, the cruel humbug Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his old business partner Jacob Marley to warn him to change his miserly ways. After midnight, three spirits guide Scrooge on a journey through his Christmases past, present and future, to reveal the errors of his cold-heart. Along the way he encounters the mistletoe and merriment of Mr Fezziwig’s dancing party, Tiny Tim’s generous Christmas spirit and the true consequences of his meanness. Made in Derby and performed by a talented ensemble cast with live music and carols, this much-loved festive story will be a heart-warming experience for all the family this Christmas.

A Derby Theatre and Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch Production

DIRECTED BY

Douglas Rintoul DESIGNER

Ruari Murchison

TUESDAY 3 – SATURDAY 14 MARCH

Shakespeare’s darkest and spookiest thriller... Battles. Murder. Ghosts. And desire... Three witches on a heath have a disturbing prophecy for a victorious warrior. Macbeth will be King of Scotland. As this wicked seed is planted, daring Macbeth and his determined wife Lady Macbeth draw bloody daggers and set out on a fateful path. But seizing the crown comes at a terrible price, as guilt grows, enemies draw close and the fight for survival hurtles towards a tragic conclusion... This epic and intensely terrifying period version of Shakespeare’s most regal and timeless classic warns of the effects of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake. This co-production with Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch follows the successful collaboration of Abigail’s Party, Abi and One Man, Two Guvnors.

FRANKENSTEIN MONDAY 20 – SATURDAY 25 JANUARY An eighteen year-old girl, Mary Shelley, dreams up a monster whose tragic story will capture the imaginations of generations to come. A young scientist by the name of Frankenstein breathes life into a gruesome body. Banished into an indifferent world, Frankenstein’s creature desperately seeks out his true identity, but the agony of rejection and a broken promise push him into darkness. Dangerous and vengeful, the creature threatens to obliterate Frankenstein and everyone he loves, in a ferocious and bloodthirsty hunt for his maker. Rona Munro’s brilliant new adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Gothic masterpiece, from the producers of Of Mice and Men and The Crucible, places the writer herself amongst the action as she wrestles with her creation and with the stark realities facing revolutionary young women, then and now.

WASTELAND

In 1994 hundreds of coal miners hung up their pit boots as Grimethorpe Colliery was destroyed, along with the tight-knit working-class community that surrounded it. WASTELAND, Gary Clarke’s sequel to COAL, looks at how two generations coped in this era of radical upheaval. As we see one generation grind to a halt, we follow the next into the 90s’ illegal rave scene, where derelict warehouses and abandoned work spaces became home for a new-found community of music and dance. Bringing together Clarke’s vivid physical dance language performed by a company of exceptional dancers, a community cast of singers, brass musicians, archive film footage, a powerful rave soundtrack and unique art work by Jimmy Cauty (co-founder of The KLF), WASTELAND dives head first into a gritty story of loss, hope, escapism and survival.

Where we can say whatever we want, do whatever we feel and where no-one will ever bother us. They haven’t found the ending yet, but they know it will have to be something extraordinary. A powerful new play by Lindsay Rodden, HERE is about finding sanctuary in the unlikeliest of places. About dancing on rooftops, blossom in winter, and re-writing the story of the city as your own. About two best friends with a library card, and the power they summon through friendship and books to make something magical. To say WE WERE HERE. QUALITY STREET

TUESDAY 14 – SATURDAY 18 APRIL Phoebe Throssel lives on Quality Street, the bustling hub of a quaint northern town where she runs a school for unruly children. Ten years since a tearful goodbye, an old flame returns from fighting Napoleon. But the look of disappointment on Captain Valentine’s face when he greets a more mature, less glamorous Phoebe, spurs our determined heroine to action. She becomes the wild and sparkling Miss Livvy, a younger alter-ego who soon entraps the clueless Captain. As their romance is rekindled, can she juggle both personas? Or will her deception scandalise the town and wreck any future with the man she loves? J.M. Barrie’s delicious farce, written years before his much-loved Peter Pan, was so well known in its day that it gave its name to the UK’s most popular chocolates, made in Halifax since 1936. In Laurie Sansom’s directorial debut for Northern Broadsides, this rare revival also features a commentary from the Quality Street™ factory workers, whose own stories of hapless romance and growing old disgracefully give the show a playful Yorkshire twist.

Three married couples. Three kitchens. Three Christmas parties.

“A master of comic ingenuity” The Guardian

Sidney Hopcroft, a small-time tradesman, persuades wife Jane to throw a Christmas party hoping to find favour with a bank manager and local architect. As the celebrations get under way, class differences and naked ambition combine to hilarious effect as, one by one, the characters seek refuge in Jane’s kitchen. Over the next two years, the Jacksons and Brewster-Wrights take turns to host festivities. But Sidney’s star has begun to rise and roles are increasingly reversed as the cracks in the other couples’ marriages begin to show. Alan Ayckbourn’s comic masterpiece of social climbing in 1970s suburbia fuses a potent mix of farce and black comedy. An Olivier and Tony Award winning playwright, Alan Ayckbourn’s 81 plays have been produced worldwide. MARK STEEL

EVERY LITTLE THING’S GONNA BE ALRIGHT SATURDAY 22 FEBRUARY, 8PM A few years ago, it seemed unlikely that the UK would vote to leave the EU; we had a reasonable opposition to the Tory Government; Donald Trump was a buffoon who surely wasn’t going to beat Hillary Clinton and Mark was living the married suburban ideal, since then it’s all gone to absolute sh*t! But don’t worry as Mark thinks Every Little Thing’s Gonna Be Alright. Mark’s sell-out show Who Do I Think I Am, revealed his natural father was a world backgammon champion. Now the star of Radio 4’s Mark Steel’s in Town, and newspaper columnist of the year, is touring a show which is guaranteed to make the world seem even more mental than it is. TICKETS: £15.50

ANDY PARSONS

HEALING THE NATION TUESDAY 21 APRIL, 8PM

It was 24th June 2016 and I found myself contemplating a supermarket meal deal. I only wanted a sandwich and I only needed a sandwich but given that I could get a snack and a drink for only 5p more it seemed financially irresponsible not to. I had spent so long pondering the EU Referendum result from the day before that I was now in a massive rush. The lad on the till scanned the first two items no problem but the third item he couldn’t get to scan at all. I thought ‘this is going to be a nightmare’ – there was a queue building up and he looked like he was going to call the supervisor. Then to his credit, he tried to scan it one more time, it wouldn’t scan – so he went ‘bip’ himself and chucked it through. And it was at that moment I thought “oh we’ll be alright as a country we will”. And we will be alright. Trust me. I’m not a politician. As seen on Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo, Q.I. and repeated on Dave. “Cracking adlibbing… a joke-rich rallying call for a better Britain” The Guardian TICKETS: £15.50 AGE GUIDE: Strictly 14+ (Contains swearing and adult content)
