WELCOME TO OUR SPRING SEASON Our spring season offers up a wealth of great shows, and I hope you will be able to join us for one or all of them. Of course, before then, we have two fantastic festive shows on offer and I’m delighted to welcome Oliver O’Shea to direct the timeless classic, A Christmas Carol, whilst I create Little Red Riding Hood, a magical gem of a show for under 7s in our Studio. We then follow up with new co-productions with Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch, where Douglas Rintoul’s Macbeth is bound to be a spine-chilling feast, and Crongton Knights with Pilot Theatre, which follows our hugely successful co-production of Noughts & Crosses last year. For Easter, we have another extravaganza of a family show for you Treasure Island. Just like The Jungle Book last year, this production will have full BSL integration and captioning, live music and plenty of magic for all the family. I am also delighted to inform you that we recently won the UK Theatre Award for Excellence in Arts Education, so why not get in touch to find out how you can study with us, participate in a community workshop or support the work that we do across the city. Neil Duffield’s stunning adaptation of Charles Dickens’ treasured novel returns to the Derby Theatre stage for Christmas 2019. On Christmas Eve, the cruel humbug Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his old business partner Jacob Marley to warn him to change his miserly ways. After midnight, three spirits guide Scrooge on a journey through his Christmases past, present and future, to reveal the errors of his cold-heart. Along the way he encounters the mistletoe and merriment of Mr Fezziwig’s dancing party, Tiny Tim’s generous Christmas spirit and the true consequences of his meanness. Made in Derby and performed by a talented ensemble cast with live music and carols, this much-loved festive story will be a heart-warming experience for all the family this Christmas.

Life isn’t easy on the Crongton Estate and for McKay and his mates it’s all about keeping their heads down but when a friend finds herself in trouble, they set out on a mission that goes further than any of them imagined. Crongton Knights will take you on a night of madcap adventure as McKay and his friends ‘The Magnificent Six’ encounter the dangers and triumphs of a mission gone awry. In this world premiere adaptation of Alex Wheatle’s award-winning novel, the pulse of the city is alive on stage with a soundscape of beatboxing and vocals laid down by the cast and created by acclaimed musician Conrad Murray. In 1994 hundreds of coal miners hung up their pit boots as Grimethorpe Colliery was destroyed, along with the tight-knit working-class community that surrounded it. WASTELAND, Gary Clarke’s sequel to COAL, looks at how two generations coped in this era of radical upheaval. As we see one generation grind to a halt, we follow the next into the 90s’ illegal rave scene, where derelict warehouses and abandoned work spaces became home for a new-found community of music and dance. Bringing together Clarke’s vivid physical dance language performed by a company of exceptional dancers, a community cast of singers, brass musicians, archive film footage, a powerful rave soundtrack and unique art work by Jimmy Cauty (co-founder of The KLF), WASTELAND dives head first into a gritty story of loss, hope, escapism and survival.

Rygbi: Yma / Here is uplifting: full of hope, glory and camaraderie. It celebrates the pride and passion that rugby players and fans experience together. Lunatic is an energetic riot. It is fun, relevant and fired up. It smashes together 30s’ music and style with 90s’ pop-culture. First shown 10 years ago it is fuelled by questions surrounding nationality, gender and class. Ten years since a tearful goodbye, an old flame returns from fighting Napoleon. But the look of disappointment on Captain Valentine’s face when he greets a more mature, less glamorous Phoebe, spurs our determined heroine to action. She becomes the wild and sparkling Miss Livvy, a younger alter-ego who soon entraps the clueless Captain. As their romance is rekindled, can she juggle both personas? Or will her deception scandalise the town and wreck any future with the man she loves? J.M. Barrie’s delicious farce, written years before his much-loved Peter Pan, was so well known in its day that it gave its name to the UK’s most popular chocolates, made in Halifax since 1936. In Laurie Sansom’s directorial debut for Northern Broadsides, this rare revival also features a commentary from the Quality Street™ factory workers, whose own stories of hapless romance and growing old disgracefully give the show a playful Yorkshire twist.

I had spent so long pondering the EU Referendum result from the day before that I was now in a massive rush. The lad on the till scanned the first two items no problem but the third item he couldn’t get to scan at all. I thought ‘this is going to be a nightmare’ – there was a queue building up and he looked like he was going to call the supervisor. Then to his credit, he tried to scan it one more time, it wouldn’t scan – so he went ‘bip’ himself and chucked it through. And it was at that moment I thought “oh we’ll be alright as a country we will”. And we will be alright. Trust me. I’m not a politician. STUDENT PRODUCTIONS IN 2020 During February and May in 2020, University of Derby 1st, 2nd and 3rd year Theatre Arts, Technical Theatre and Costume and Set Design students will produce and present productions in the Main House and Studio, all perfect opportunities to see and celebrate work presented by the next generation of artists. The 2nd year student production will be The Seven Acts of Mercy and will be directed by Tom Bellerby and Amanda Wallace. All other performance details will be announced via our social media platforms and website.

DT YOUNG PEOPLE’S NETWORK
Our Youth Theatre provides young people aged between 8 and 18 the opportunity to not only enjoy theatre, but also to explore their creativity and express themselves in a safe and supportive environment. Working with professional theatre practitioners, all groups work towards a major annual show, either on our main stage or in our studio theatre. Our friendly groups are open to all. AMBASSADORS Derby Theatre have three ambassador groups: Community (age 18+), Youth (ages 14 – 19) and Student (for University of Derby students). Ambassadors are a crucial part of what we do at the Theatre; they help us connect with many different communities and spread the word about the range of shows and opportunities we have here. Come and join us at Derby Theatre for a cuppa and the chance to meet and chat with new and old friends from all areas of our community. Taking place on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, it is a free event which you can drop into anytime between 12.30pm – 1.30pm.
As a Learning Theatre, we can give you special access to work with practitioners right across the whole theatre-making process, from designer to director, technician to actor.
COSTUME AND PROP HIRE At Derby Theatre, we hire costumes and props to professional, amateur and community theatre groups, schools and colleges. We have over 2500 costume pieces built up over many years and an eclectic selection of props... and we are always adding to our stock.
