AUTUMN SEASON AT DERBY THEATRE We have an exciting autumn season that will keep you entertained over the next few months. Thank you to all audiences who supported our first Derby Theatre production, Cooking with Elvis in May. There are four Derby Theatre productions for you this season: the classic and moving tale of Kes (which will be directed by Artistic Director, Sarah Brigham, and which will involve local young people as Billy’s class mates next to the cast of professional actors); a brilliant new musical, The Opinion Makers (made with our friends at Mercury Theatre, Colchester); and not one but two fantastic Christmas shows, Pinocchio (which will also be directed by Sarah Brigham, alongside Hiccup Theatre) and Horrible Histories: Horrible Christmas (from the same team at Birmingham Stage Company and Derby Theatre who brought you Charlotte’s Web). This is alongside the fantastic touring programme we have and the superb opportunities to engage in our learning work. However, it’s not all just about great shows here at Derby Theatre; we are transforming into a new model for regional theatres in the 21st century, one which has learning, creativity and artistic excellence running through its DNA. This means that as well as our excellent programme of professional shows we are also home to students from the University of Derby, who are working alongside professionals to become the next generation of theatre makers. We are working with the vibrant community of emerging and established artists in the East Midlands to develop training and development opportunities and we have a fantastic offer for schools, the community and anyone who wants to creatively engage with us. So we hope you access these activities too, which you’ll find in our Get Involved section on page 25. We look forward to welcoming you as a member of our audience, participant or customer at our new restaurant.

KES Set against a northern backdrop, Kes is a well-known and much-loved book and film. A coming-of-age classic told with humour and warmth which continues to speak, and be relevant to, audiences of all ages through its powerful story of struggle in a tough world. It's 1960s Britain and daring to hope can be a dangerous thing. But 'our Billy' is brave enough to break free from the hardship, coal dust and the bullying he endures from his family and teachers. Adamant on embarking on a journey towards a brighter future, Billy realises his ambition of hope and freedom through his kestrel, Kes. Billy and Kes, through a shared aspiration to reach new horizons, form a unique bond through training, love and hope. But injustice and heartbreak impact on their journeys too, as Billy tragically discovers.
Quad will be screening the classic film, directed by Ken Loach, on Wed 18 & Thu 19 September. Visit derbyquad.co.uk for more information. www.derbyquad.co.uk

THE OPiNiON MAKERS MAD MEN MEETs CARRY ON in This branD nEw anD hilarious, off-bEaT Musical ThaT will TransPorT you righT back To ‘swinging sixTiEs’ lonDon. When the utterly incompetent team at Fernsby Market Research find themselves facing the stiffest challenge of their professional lives – to report what the British Public really think of world famous ‘Doctor Campbell’s Lotion’ in readiness for a re-launch – there’s only one thing for it; make it all up! After all, that’s what market research companies do, isn’t it? Critically-acclaimed writing duo Brian Mitchell and Joseph Nixon have assembled a wonderful cast of characters for this brand new musical comedy, including: the hapless Fernsby and his useless sidekicks; a beatnik advertising phoney and his jazz flute playing muse; a Scottish Laird with a dark secret and a glamorous American gold-digger wife; and an insane Home Secretary-in-waiting. Originally developed by New Perspectives Theatre Company. A GREAT PLACE TO EAT Following the successful renovation of our auditorium, we’re continuing to work hard this year to improve your Derby Theatre experience.
These changes will take place over the summer, so we look forward to welcoming you to try our new offering this autumn.
We’re proud to announce that we’ll be bringing you a fantastic in-house restaurant with a full range of gourmet food. More exciting details on this are to be announced. And that’s not all! We’ve listened to your feedback and we’ll be making improvements to the café area, including new, comfier seating and a deli-style counter to satisfy your hunger with more variety and healthier options.
SUPPORTiNG YOUR THEATRE Thank you to all those who supported us last year by donating towards our restoration fund. We refurbished the auditorium so you now have more comfortable seats and we are currently working on replacing our passenger lift for disabled patrons.
The tickets will be given to children and young people in care, charities who support disabled children, children who look after a disabled parent or sibling or children who themselves are ill. For some children, it will be the first time they go to the theatre with their family.
Derby Theatre is a registered charity and accepts donations from customers and businesses who wish to support the work we do out in the community with young people and with emerging artists. You’ll be invited to donate when you book your tickets but you can also donate at any time by calling our Box Office on 01332 593939.
how can you or your company help? You can make a donation - either as a company or as an individual. You will be acknowledged on the Derby Theatre website, in the brochure (if you sponsor by mid-November) and on the digital screens in our foyer. £60 will support one family to visit the show.
christmas appeal Many families will face a tough time this Christmas. This year Derby Theatre is joining forces with businesses and generous people across the Midlands to ensure that families who need a break will be able to enjoy an outing to see Horrible Histories: Horrible Christmas.
Please contact the Box Office on 01332 593939 to speak to staff and for further information. We now also take part in the Government’s Gift Aid Scheme. Gift Aid allows charities to claim the basic rate of tax on every pound donated. So if you donated £100 to Derby Theatre, it means that you would actually be giving us at least £125! Giving under Gift Aid means that so much more money can be raised at no extra cost to our donors.
