Hello… and a continued thank you First of all, I would like to say a huge, heartfelt thank you to you, our audiences, for your continued support. As we reach mid-2022, I am thrilled that we have welcomed thousands of people through our doors, both old and new, for an eclectic range of shows for the first part of the year… and there’s more great shows, festivals, events and opportunities to get involved in to look forward to from the summer and beyond. In June and July, we will produce and present Home Girl by Alex Wheatle MBE, in collaboration with young people in care, a Derby Theatre production as part of our Reimagine project. Summer time is festival time, and I am delighted to say that we have three great festivals for a range of ages to enjoy: Departure Lounge, our festival of fresh and exciting theatre for artists and audiences alike returns for its 10th year in July; Reimagine Festival: Colour the City, a month-long youth festival with a range of creative activities and performance taking place in various community settings in and around the city; and Derby CAN Over to You, a spectacular tented event taking place in Markeaton Park which includes thrilling circus and a celebratory showcase of shows and performances from local people. Looking ahead to the autumn, we have another jam-packed season of shows to offer you. In September, I am really looking forward to directing Jekyll and Hyde, a co-production with Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch adapted by Neil Bartlett from Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story, with a wealth of opportunities for schools. Christmas is always just around the corner – and this festive season we will present two great, uplifting shows perfect for all ages – the delightful and much-loved The Wind in the Willows in our Main House and a cheeky and charming production of The Ugly Duckling for little ones and their families in the Studio, presented in association with tutti frutti productions and York Theatre Royal. This March, we were also thrilled to be awarded with Theatre of Sanctuary status in recognition of our work and relationship with sanctuary seekers For details of all that we have on offer over the next few months, please take a look through the brochure to see what takes your fancy – for many opportunities to see work, be entertained, get involved and try something new. I, and the rest of the Derby Theatre team, look forward to welcoming you to Derby Theatre soon.

Journey through the tensions and frustrations of being labelled learning-disabled and autistic. How you are ignored, and how this affects your identity and place in society today. Witness how that label prevents you from getting a job, taken seriously, or even getting laid! The struggle is real people. The cast are exclusively learning-disabled and autistic and use a collaborative devising process to create witty, provocative theatre based on their lives, experiences and questions about the world and their existence within it. They are becoming increasingly intolerant of being segregated, overlooked and infantilised by society and will continue to produce art that sparks solutions until this has stopped.

Suddenly, a gang of homeless fairytale characters raid his sanctuary, saying they’ve been evicted by the vertically-challenged Lord Farquaad. So Shrek strikes a deal: I’ll get your homes back, if you give me my home back! But when Shrek and Farquaad meet, the Lord strikes a deal of his own: He’ll give the fairytale characters their homes back, if Shrek rescues Princess Fiona. Shrek obliges, yet finds something appealing – something strange and different – about this pretty princess. He likes her. A lot. But why does she always run off when the sun sets?
