THE DEATH SHOW SATURDAY 6 JULY, 8PM

COMMUNITY PICK

Death. A bit grim, isn’t it? Morbid, macabre and even unmentionable, but does it have to be that way? Drawn together by their shared fear of death, ‘thanatophobes’ Lucy Nicholls and Antonia Beck invite you to embark on a journey of discovery, contemplation and courage. Take time to celebrate your own mortality, laugh, cry, stick two fingers up at the grim reaper and discover why talking about death is ultimately life affirming. Created in response to a provocative and unashamedly honest conversation about death, The Death Show looks to better understand our relationship with death and dying and why we struggle to accept our own mortality. “The Death Show takes an important subject – how we face the end of life and how we face life itself – and shakes it up... And despite the fact it may at first seem like a depressing subject, The Death Show is both fun and life-affirming.” educational, heart-wrenching and heart-warming” Weekend Notes TICKETS: £12 (Under 26s £10) £2 off for AGE GUIDE: 14+

SEE-THROUGH

Ava Hunt Theatre STUDENT PICK

(ABOUT FEELING SUPER SAD)

FRIDAY 31 MAY, 7PM

SATURDAY 25 MAY, 8PM

All you need is a camera, an internet connection and something to say.

A hilarious cabaret musical about depression, that explains, sings, and throws glitter about how it’s OK not to be OK. Sally’s a happy person. She doesn’t let little things get her down and almost never cries. But she’s got an illness. It makes her feel like she isn’t the person she wants to be, but she doesn’t want anyone to know about it. Written by Olivier award-winner Jon Brittain (Rotterdam and Margaret Thatcher Queen of Soho) with music by Matthew Floyd Jones (Frisky & Mannish). It’s a joyful, buoyant, gleeful, slightly silly, sugar coated, unrelenting and completely super happy show! Except for the bits about depression.

Examining validation, confession and the cost of sharing, See-Through is an edited, unedited, live, pre-recorded, reality show that invites you to see behind the camera.

JOURNEYS OF DESTINY THURSDAY 20 JUNE, 6.30PM

FAMILY FRIENDLY Meet Saad. Along with his family, he’s packed up his hopes and dreams – dreams like growing up with his friends or playing for Manchester United – into whatever he can carry. He is embarking on a journey that will change his world forever, a journey into the unknown. Journeys of Destiny is a new play for young people and community audiences, which takes stories from all our families and weaves them with that of Saad Al-Kassab, a young Syrian refugee whose dreams had to change forever when war broke out in his city of Homs. Using music, verbatim material and the children’s stories of going from the known to the unknown, be it changing schools, changing homes or changing countries, Journeys of Destiny explores what we need to take with us to keep us resilient, so we can navigate a world of change and achievement. Young people from Derby Theatre Youth groups and young refugees in the city will be participating in this production alongside the Journeys of Destiny team of actors to tell this inspiring story.
