“mY OnLY LOvE SPrung frOm mY OnLY hATE, TOO EArLY SEEn unknOWn, AnD knOWn TOO LATE!” This is a story of boy meets girl. But it is not a simple love story. These children’s lives are fuelled by mistakes, hatred, violence and exquisite pain. They are entangled in the infamous family feud without a hope of getting out alive. And yet…and yet…we cannot help but hope. Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece proves that love is a force to be reckoned with. Romeo and Juliet will never grow old and neither will this story; this is a love story that was, is and will be again. We are delighted to welcome the young Russian director, Polina Kalinina, as the company’s first guest director since Jonathan Miller directed Hamlet in 2008.

WRITTEN BY Alan Ayckbourn DIRECTED BY michael Cabot

Tue - Sat 7.30pm, Wed & Sat 2.30pm

SummEr 1974. A WELL-InTEnTIOnED TEA PArTY DESCEnDS InTO ChAOS. Wealthy, unfulfilled housewife Diana arranges a gathering of old friends to cheer up bereaved Colin, whose fiancée drowned two months earlier. Paul, her bullying, self-absorbed husband, has recently had a dalliance with Evelyn, the glamorous wife of his friend and incompetent business associate, John. The party is completed by long-suffering Marge, who has left Gordon, her hypochondriac spouse, ailing at home. Preparations for the party spark tensions and open old wounds. As lingering resentments and deep-rooted jealousies surface, an unexpectedly cheerful Colin strolls into the mayhem. Acerbic and painfully funny, Absent Friends explores friendship, marriage and what it ultimately means to be happy. In one of his finest plays, Ayckbourn’s craftsmanship and acute social observation have never been sharper or more biting.

24 | A LEARNING THEATRE

dERbY THEATRE A LEARninG THEATRE …for the 21st Century Our partnership with the University of Derby means Derby Theatre is a unique venue leading the way as a ‘Learning Theatre’, offering a resource for training, mentorship and artistic excellence. The academic team works alongside the theatre team and students from across the College of Arts, studying Theatre Arts, Technical Theatre, Film Production, Production Design, Music and Dance, to offer a truly unique learning experience. Students study, work and perform in a nationally renowned producing theatre, and learn by working alongside professionals on top-quality performances. Performing Arts students gain experience, which enables them to form their own theatre companies and pursue professional roles, emerging as new talent, mentored by Derby Theatre and the academic team. This joint endeavour also enables students to take part in workshops with visiting artists of world class. For example, our recent workshops and residencies have provided students with skills and experiences working with Gecko, Headlong and Pilot, as well as taking a role alongside our artistic and technical teams on home-grown Derby Theatre productions with our Company Aside scheme. Once students have trained we support them entering the first stages of a professional theatre career through graduate internships and a comprehensive artist development programme. Performing Arts at Derby has never been more exciting.

FOR EvERYOnE COSTUME UnpiCKEd Join our Head of Wardrobe, Tim Heywood, and guest designers for this exciting series of events where we explore costume design and making, and the impact it has on stage. This season we focus on Birdsong and the changing face of fashion during the First World War. biRdSOnG Wed 27 may, 5pm The changing fashion over the four years of the First World War was arguably one of the most significant reflectors of the changes happening in women's lives at the time, moving from tight corsets and hobble skirts to knee-length skirts, billowing harem pants and tailored uniforms by the end of the war. Come and explore this fascinating era through costume with our Head of Wardrobe, Tim Heywood. £28 for the workshop and a ticket to see the show that evening.

HiRE A COSTUME From fur coats to wooden clogs, we’ll hopefully have just what you are looking for. At Derby Theatre we hire costumes to professional, amateur and community theatre groups, schools and colleges. 28 | SUPPORT US

SUppORTinG YOUR THEATRE Derby Theatre is a registered charity working to produce and support the very best in theatre-making in the Midlands for audiences and artists. We provide an inspiring programme of opportunities for children and communities to engage with culture, whether for fun or as part of their education, and also support local people developing careers in the arts. We are mostly funded through our ticket sales and grants from our funders. This money allows us to do excellent work, but like most charities we also need to generate much-needed public support in order to work with all the people, young and old, who can benefit from the theatre’s activities.

If you would like to support Derby Theatre you can do this in a number of different ways:

• Donate to our Plus One scheme for looked-after children.

• Leave a legacy to ensure our schools and community programme continues to thrive.

• Your company could sponsor the great activity our Learning Department delivers all year round.

Text DBYT09 and the amount you’d like to donate to: 70070

in MEMORiAM GivinG One of our most recent projects was a direct result of a generous personal donation from Derbyshire resident, Doreen Weaver. The Brian Weaver Fellowship, in memory of her late husband Brian, was set up as a legacy for Brian and his love of theatre. It provides an aspiring young actor from Derbyshire with the opportunity of professional paid work and career guidance with Derby Theatre. After a very successful first year in which Adam Horvath appeared in our productions of The Odyssey and A Christmas Carol , the second fellowship has been awarded to Jake Waring (pictured). Doreen Weaver said: “I am so pleased that I decided to approach Derby Theatre with this dream project in memory of my beloved husband.”

If you want to find out more about the impact you can make, in the way that Doreen Weaver has, or indeed in any other way then please contact our Business Development Manager, Andrew McIntyre: a.mcintyre@derby.ac.uk or 01332 593974
