Indonesia and the additional income growth and production of goods. The vast majority of energy will still be supplied by fossil fuels. We therefore strongly believe that our member companies will continue to cope with occurring challenges.

Besides, the low oil prices and geopolitical situations cause projects to be delayed or cancelled, and changes in scope which of course also has implications for contracts and pricing. For the industry, this means that the companies, even more than before, need to come up with innovative solutions to remain competitive, efficient and effective. Dutch suppliers in the oil and gas industry have already proven to create innovative solutions that are unique in the world. The standard in the Netherlands is high!

In order to promote the interests of the Dutch suppliers abroad, IRO participates in trade missions in cooperation with embassies and organises Dutch pavilions at all major international oil and gas exhibitions.

chapeau Contracts for newly named mega-vessel ‘Pioneering Spirit’

Dit Second augait giant augait baby to follow bgdfbndfgz On February 26, 2015, the Swiss-based Allseas, global leader in offshore pipeline installation and subsea construction, signed a contract with Norway’s Statoil for the installation of three platforms on the giant Johan Sverdrup development in single lifts using the newly renamed mega-vessel ‘Pioneering Spirit’ (former Pieter Schelte). The contract with Statoil will see the vessel lift three Johan Sverdrup platforms into place in 2018/19.

The mega ‘Pioneering Spirit’ already has contacts with Shell, ExxonMobil and Talisman for single lift and decommissioning jobs, all secured ahead of its final completion. Amazing Grace

Allseas has also named its second mega-lift vessel, which will dwarf the already huge ‘Pioneering Spirit’. It will be called ‘Amazing Grace’ and will be able to lift 72,000-tonne topsides, compared to the Pioneering Spirit’s 48,000-tonne capacity. The vessel will have a width of 160 m (525 ft), whereas Pieter Schelte is 124 m (406 ft) wide. ‘Amazing Grace’,

expected to cost more than €3 billion, is due to be delivered in 2021, but Allseas has yet to choose a fabrication yard, said founder and president Edward Heerema during the inauguration ceremony in February. Offshore Holland spoke to him on board the ‘Pioneering Spirit’ while berthed in the Rotterdam port for the installation of the eight twin sets of lifting beams, which will be used to lift the topsides. Yme

The first job for the ‘Pioneering Spirit’ will be lifting off Talisman’s doomed Yme topsides in the Norwegian North Sea. Before that, the vessel will

perform test lifts in the southern North Sea, using a specially fabricated test platform, based on the module support platform of the former North West Hutton platform. Brent After Yme, ‘Pioneering Spirit’ will start a project with Shell, removing the Brent platforms. The first will be Brent Delta in May next year. The vessel had been due to work on the South Stream project, but the project has been deferred.

Always in pursuit of ‘Excellence and Innovation’

The ‘Lewek Constellation’, an ice-classed, multi-lay offshore construction vessel comes equipped with an 800 metric ton Huisman multi-lay system that is able to support both rigid and non-rigid pipelines, as well as a 3,000 mT Huisman offshore heavy lift crane.

Huisman excels by delivering its clients a competitive edge through high-quality, innovative solutions 8

2015

At a time of declining oil prices and ever rising operating costs, the oil and gas industry needs to find new ways to shape its own future. Innovation is needed more than ever before. Not only is innovation crucial as the new finds of oil and gas are often in difficult locations such as deep offshore and Arctic areas; bringing down the ever growing costs of exploration and production is also an important issue, together with improving and increasing production from existing fields. Huisman, the Dutch specialist in lifting, drilling and subsea solutions, can certainly be described as a pioneer in this respect. In Schiedam, engineers of the in-house ‘think tank’ are constantly developing new technologies in the knowledge that increased cost efficiency is the only way to make operations profitable. It does not have to be rocket science, all the time. What matters is that innovations work. “For us, New Technology is not only a business,” explained Gerben Roks, Product Manager Cranes, “but a lifelong passion to be the best that we can be. Innovation is part of our DNA. Our goals are to bring creativity, quality, efficiency and safety to all of our international clients, and to always remain in pursuit of ‘excellence and innovation’.”

If you mention Huisman, the first thing likely to come to mind is offshore cranes, although the company’s roots go back to 1929, when it began as a steel construction business. Huisman has since found its niche in lifting equipment, and offshore cranes remain the company’s most recognisable products. Over the years, however, Huisman has expanded its product line to include pipelay systems, which nowadays form a well-established part of the overall business, drilling and well intervention systems, vessel design, winches and more.

always be done better. They first develop a design that meets the client’s wishes. Via basic and detailed design, further engineering is undertaken at which point the shop drawings are produced. These then make their way to our production facilities. We have four production locations: our headquarters in Schiedam, a facility in the Czech Republic, a plant in Zhangzhou City, China where most of our cranes are now built, and a brand-new production facility in the city of Navegantes, located in the southern part of Brazil bordering the Atlantic Ocean.”

Customised

Most of the equipment supplied by Huisman is aimed at the oil and gas sector, but new markets, including the market for renewables, are developing. As Roks continued: “Our focus is on building customised equipment. The scope of customisation can be very broad. Pipelaying equipment is always very customised, but for offshore cranes, we do offer standard designs, including our 300-tonne pedestal crane and 800-tonne mast crane, to which we subsequently add tailor-made features. Our engineers honour the principle that things can

Hybrid Boom Crane

One of the latest innovations from Huisman is the Rope Luffing Knuckle Boom Crane, for which the company was awarded the Innovation of the Year award during the annual Offshore Support Journal Awards 2015. The new hybrid crane is recognised as delivering a significant innovation to the design, build and operational prospects for offshore support vessels. “This is our answer to subsea challenges and our goal is to market the crane under the name Hybrid Boom Crane.” With these words, Gerben

The Huisdrill 12000.

Roks launched his introduction to the crane, which provides an optimum solution for the growing operational challenges of subsea construction. He went on, “This crane design maintains the advantage of the knuckle boom functionality, by offering a low suspension point which is essential for offshore construction activities, without the disadvantages of conventional knuckle boom cranes, such as a heavy boom that affects the crane load curves and impacts on ship stability.” “The active heave-compensated crane is designed to execute projects in deep and ultra-deep waters, and is able to handle large and heavy loads in hostile environmental conditions. As such, it offers a low overall construction weight, high lifting height and large capacity outreach. We at Huisman are confident that this crane will contribute to optimising the performance of offshore support vessels; a key capability in today’s market.”

A test assembly for drilling equipment will be installed on Huisman’s own premises in the Netherlands.

Operational model

The newly-patented crane concept appears very promising for the near future, and has already led to several orders being placed. The capacities of the crane range from 250 to 1,200-tonne SWL, for use in water depths of up to 5,000 metres. The first Hybrid Boom Crane was developed in 2013, in close cooperation with Subsea 7 and then sold to that company. This crane type with a 900-tonne safe working load capacity is due to be installed on their new construction vessel ‘Seven Arctic’, which is itself scheduled for delivery in 2016. The crane can lift up to 600 tonnes up to a height of 50 metres from the main deck. Bearing a 250-tonne load, it can also reach out to a radius of 58 metres, or with a 300-tonne load a 51-metre radius. In December 2014, Huisman secured a contract from COSCO (Dalian) Shipyard for the delivery of four

10

2015

customised 400-tonne Hybrid Boom Cranes and two 100-tonne Knuckle Boom Cranes for installation on board four new subsea support vessels (SSVs) for Maersk Supply Service. An operational model of the crane is due to be presented at the Huisman booth (no. 2327) at the OTC 2015 in Houston. Time savings

Dieter Wijning is Huisman’s Product Manager Drilling. “A huge number of drilling vessels are currently under construction, against the background of a shrinking market. Precisely therein lies our challenge. The lower oil price has certainly set operators

and contractors thinking. They are focusing ever more sharply on efficiency and drilling innovations that will reduce well costs. And that is where we come in. The key factors in this respect are integrated designs that demand less time per well, smaller units, offline activities and increased safety through automation. We always investigate the best possible drive for the application, and are skilled at fully integrating all systems into a single control system. We are also permanently on the lookout for activities that can be carried out in new and faster ways. Take for example the handling of pipes. Our ultimate

goal is to deliver innovative drilling solutions. Our aim is to always generate time savings for the operator, something we often achieve via Drilling Well On Paper (DWOP). For example, we examine the situation of a well in the North Sea, together with an operator and contractor. We first decide all the steps that need to be taken in order to drill to a specified depth. Then we calculate how long the exercise would take using a traditional drilling rig. Subsequently, we execute precisely the same drilling operation using the innovative Huisman system. This is something we have already carried out on numerous occasions, and time and again, data comparison has revealed that the Huisman system on average generates a 25% time saving. As a consequence, the drilling costs per bore hole are far lower, and any cost saving is music to the ears of the operator.” DMPT

“We at Huisman are convinced that drilling system automation is about to reach a turning point; from here on automation will take a major leap forwards, thereby delivering real value. Nonetheless, in the current conservative market, integration is proving somewhat difficult,” explained Dieter Wijning. “Historically, this is a business that has been slow to adapt to new technology, and it often takes a long time to convince people of the benefits. The main business driver is no ‘breakdowns’, so every change is automatically considered a risk. It can be a tough sell, but I think people are starting to change. Right now, for example, operators and contractors are on the lookout for tools that will help them do their jobs more efficiently, and more safely.” As always, the exception proves the rule, and Royal Dutch Shell is one such exception. Over the past decade, this progressive operator has taken significant strides in this direction, by using downhole tools that connect

to the drilling rig, and create an automated process. It all started in 2007, when Shell awarded Huisman a contract to design and manufacture a dual drilling tower and the related pipe, riser and BOP handling equipment for two Bully drillships, which had originally been designed to accommodate a traditional tower. Following the contracting of these Bullys, Huisman concluded that the overall layout of the vessels could be improved. In response, the engineers developed their own drillship design, the so-called Huisdrill, combining the Dual Multi Purpose Tower (DMPT), a hoistable floor and engine rooms below the accommodation block. These changes created a vessel with much more functional deck space despite the overall size being around 50% smaller than a conventional drillship. The first Huisdrill units to be built were once again ordered by Shell and Noble Drilling for the ‘Globetrotter I’ and ‘II‘ drillships. “Huisman designed these vessels according to the integrated design approach. In other words, we first designed the DMPT drilling tower and then built the vessel around it. If you design a vessel around the tower, you automatically end up with a more efficient result. Early in 2014, we went on to develop a design for an extended Huisdrill vessel measuring 208 metres, capable of accommodating doublelength risers. This Huisdrill 12000, with DMPT technology and a series of unique construction methods, exceeds many of the capabilities offered by competing drill ship designs.” Huisman has also produced designs for a self-propelled semisubmersible, the Orion, incorporating the dual MPT, as well as for a pair of semis for use in icy climates. More recently, the company introduced a design for an innovative jack-up.

Spectacular

Right now, Huisman is expanding its testing and commissioning facilities in Schiedam for new drilling equipment. “What we plan to introduce here will be quite spectacular,” explained Wijning, not without pride. “A facility on this scale has never been seen before, anywhere in the world. A full-scale 84-metre-high drilling tower will be installed, capable of handling 55 metre (180 feet) stands and 46 metre (150 feet) risers. All the new products we are currently developing will be implemented on this drilling tower, so they can undergo thorough testing. Our aim is to demonstrate that our claims can actually be achieved in practice.” “The test tower is set to become a showcase for our latest drilling technology. When the tower becomes operational in Q3 of this year, we will invite the world’s drilling experts to pay us a visit. With their own eyes, they will be able to convince themselves of the capacities of our design. It will even be possible to simulate DMPT variations including set-back and well centre locations. The same rail interface as that on an actual DMPT will be installed, making it possible to mount real travelling blocks and manipulators. A 50-metre hole has been drilled into the ground below the well centre, for the testing of hanging off a drill pipe, or drill stand, in the rotary. It will even be possible to assess the behaviour of tubes and risers during the testing process, to improve the equipment and the products. Last but not least, tilting the test assembly will make it possible to test at an angle. Dynamic ship movements can then be imitated by rotating the tower from side to side at the regulated frequency, during operations.”

‘If you design a vessel around the tower, you automatically end up with a more efficient result.’

Dieter Wijning

Lead

Terence Vehmeijer is Product Manager Pipelay at Huisman Equipment. As a world market leader in the turnkey delivery of deepwater pipelay systems, Huisman supplies integrated systems including Flex-lay systems, S-lay systems, J-lay systems, and Reel-lay systems. Today the company even delivers combined systems such as multi-lay systems, one of which that combines Flex-lay, J-lay and Reel-lay, has been installed on board Heerema’s ‘Aegir’. In the beginning however, the company started building relatively small pipelay system. “That is indeed true,” explained Vehmeijer, “but this is a field in which we have grown alongside our clients. Subsea 7 is an excellent example. We entered into a sort of partnership with that particular company, and were involved in the development of their pipelay vessels. Together with them we developed the pipelay technology that is now viewed as the gold standard in the industry. This approach was always part of the philosophy of Huisman. There are new features on every generation of pipelay system we supply. We are constantly in the process of innovating. That is part of who we are at Huisman. We are true pioneers in the field of high-tech applications. This forwardlooking approach is much appreciated by our customers, also because they realise that our pipelay equipment always offers them a lead in respect of the competition.” Novelty

A ‘Dutch’ example of successful technical collaboration is the relationship between Huisman and Heerema. This relationship started with the delivery of the J-lay system on board the ‘Balder’, in 2002, and it has been Huisman’s extensive track record of delivering reliable and effective offshore construction equipment that has contributed to the major commitment on the part of Heerema. For the Deep Water Construction

12

2015

Vessel ‘Aegir’, for example, Huisman designed, built and installed a 4,000 tonne Offshore Mast Crane together with a highly-customised pipelay tower for both J-lay and Reel-lay operations in ultra deep water. The J-lay tower was installed over a moonpool, and was designed for both J-lay and Reel-lay operations. For Reel-lay, the tower features two pipe tensioners each with a capacity of 400 tonnes. The pipe is spooled on reels which can be lifted on board by the vessel’s own crane, while still offshore. This concept is an absolute novelty in rigid pipelaying on a large scale. It allows the onshore spooling of reels, while offshore pipelaying is continued, eliminating the need for a large spool base. Finally, the reels can be easily removed, to free up deck space for operating in J-lay or crane barge mode. Current orders

The pipelay systems currently on the quayside at Huisman Schiedam include an 800-tonne Multi-lay System (MLS) for Ezra’s ‘Lewek Constellation’, a 150-tonne Vertical-lay System for (VARD) Ocean Installer’s ‘Normand Vision’ and a portable 150 metre Vertical-lay System for Technip. The first of a series of four 550-tonne Tiltable-lay Systems (TLS) for Subsea 7 has already been installed on board the ‘Seven Waves’, early last year. This 550-tonne Flex-lay system was designed and built for the installation of flexible pipelines in water depths of up to 3000 metres. The tower is tiltable to allow the connection of flexible risers to rigid pipelines as they are retrieved from the seabed. The system’s tensioners are retractable

to allow safe and efficient A&R and PLET installation procedures. Travelling Tensioner

The most recent innovation to be offered to international pipe lay contractors is the Travelling Tensioner, a 550-tonne vertical lay system. As Terence Vehmeijer explained, “During an offshore project, pipelay vessels regularly have to return to port, to collect additional pipes. This particularly applies to jobs carried out in Brazil. Some of the ports in question are subject to height restrictions, as a consequence of which the 60 metre-high conventional lay system first has to be tilted, before it can enter the port. Tilting can apply a decisive load case on the tower design in addition to which, costly time is always lost when titling the tower into bridge passage mode. To avoid similar time-consuming exercises in the future, Huisman has now developed a more compact pipelay system, unique in its kind. The result is a vertical Travelling Tensioner Lay System, just 46 metres high, that is able to avoid all the height restrictions, without having to tilt the tower. Not only does the system save space, but also overall weight. As a consequence, in principle, our clients can make do with a smaller new vessel. In turn that represents a greater saving on their investment. The success of this innovation is closely related to the tensioners that form the heart of any flex lay system. Huisman is currently making the finishing touches to a brand-new design, that will once again enable us to offer our clients a completely new generation of extremely compact pipelay systems.”

’We at Huisman are confident that this crane will contribute to optimising the performance of offshore support vessels; a key capability in today’s market.’ Gerben Roks

Heerema signs LOI with Jurong Shipyard

World’s largest semisubmersible crane vessel Heerema Offshore Services recently signed a Letter of Intent for the engineering and construction of a new semisubmersible crane vessel (NSCV) with Jurong Shipyard, a fully owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Marine.

Signage of LOI. Left Wong Weng Sun, President and CEO of Sembcorp Marine and right Jan-Pieter Klaver, CEO of Heerema Marine Contractors.

Heerema Offshore Services, a subsidiary of Heerema Marine Contractors Holding Nederland SE (HMC), will equip its new vessel with two cranes of 10,000 tonnes lifting capacity each. The dual cranes, designed and under construction by Huisman Equipment, provide heavy lifting capacity to install and remove offshore facilities. Furthermore, the cranes can be utilized for the installation of subsea structures, foundations, moorings, and floating structures in deep water. The NSCV will be self-propelled with a transit speed of ten knots, with power generated by means of dual fuel engines – MGO & LNG. Station-keeping is by means of dynamic positioning (DP3) or mooring system. With a vessel length of 214 metres and a width of 97.5 metres the NSCV will be the world’s largest crane vessel. The introduction of the NSCV will enable HMC to meet customers’

demand for lifting capacity beyond what HMC can currently offer. Additionally, the large reinforced work deck will increase efficiency when installing or removing offshore facilities. Jan-Pieter Klaver, CEO of Heerema Marine Contractors, said: “Our Letter of Intent with Jurong Shipyard represents the next critical step in our plans to introduce the NSCV to the market. The fact that we decided to press on with our plans in these times of low oil prices, shows our belief in the offshore oil and gas industry and demonstrates our continued commitment to offer unparalleled installation services to the industry. We are confident that with Jurong we have found a reliable partner that can build the world largest crane vessel.” Wong Weng Sun, President and CEO

of Sembcorp Marine said: “We are very pleased that Heerema has chosen Jurong Shipyard as their strategic partner to engineer the construction of the New Semi-Submersible Crane Vessel. With our proven track record in building a broad range of semi-submersible vessels for drilling, well-intervention and accommodation purposes, we are confident of building the best vessel to meet Heerema’s exacting requirements.”

MARIN

Challenging wind and waves For over 80 years, MARIN has been contributing to the development of safe and economic ships and offshore structures as independent advisor in hydrodynamic and nautical research. This is done through model tests, simulations, desk studies, full-scale measurements, safety studies and training. We have several facilities and bridge simulators available to solve specific design and research issues. We accumulate know-how, expertise and experience to provide innovative tools and solutions for the maritime, offshore and nautical industry. At the same time MARIN sees it as its responsibility to contribute to the development of renewable energy offshore from waves, tides and wind.

MARIN is involved in the hydrodynamic design of fixed and floating offshore wind turbines and wind turbine installation and maintenance vessels for which the challenges are very similar to those of the offshore industry: safe and economic design, production, transportation, installation, maintenance, repair and removal. To solve specific problems for the offshore wind industry, several Joint industry projects (JIPs) are started to share knowledge, experience and costs. WiFi

The objective of WiFi JIP is to better understand the influence of steep and breaking waves on the foundation of offshore wind turbines and secondary structures like boat landing platforms. The project aims at an improved methodology to take extreme waves and non-linear wave effects into account in the design of offshore wind

turbine construction. The experimental and validated design methods can be used by the JIP participants, to have a better quality control on the design of their constructions and to avoid damage by improved design methods and calculation requirements in guidelines and standards. Wind Jack

For jack-up wind turbine installation vessels the loads on the legs and the jacking system during touch-down and lift-off are considered as the most critical step of the installation process. Wind Jack aims to understand and predict the interaction between jack-up legs and the seabed in order to better quantify the operational limits and to make an accurate prediction of the workability of wind turbine installation vessels. To determine the seabed reaction forces on the moving leg tips during

touch-down and lift-off MARIN joins forces with the Dutch geotechnical research institute Deltares. Wind Load

Wind loads are important for installation, operational and extreme design loads for floating offshore structures and ships. However, despite their importance there is surprisingly little industry guidance about wind loads. Wind tunnel tests are the main tool for present wind load predictions, bit alternative methods such as CFD might be needed. Wind Load aims to give guidance with respect to set-up and execution of computations and to the vertical velocity profile and associated turbulence intensity for the designs. First task is to test a scale 1:230 FPSO wind tunnel model in three different wind tunnel facilities. This exercise will then be repeated for a semi-submersible.

Organisation changes in the coming months will reflect the growing focus on customer satisfaction and frequency of contact, to communicate the broader scope of work, and to serve clients even better. Øyvind Wathne will be shifting his daily focus to communicate the improved capabilities of the Group to clients, in his role as Business Development Director, thereby helping the expansion strategy and supporting new product development. The formal responsibilities of CEO of Vryhof Anchors have been taken over by the current CFO, Peter Uitbeijerse.

Øyvind Wathne.

In February, 2015, Leopoldo Bello was appointed Commercial Director. In this position he is responsible for the worldwide commercial process, market intelligence and follow-up on clients’ requirements. Bello was Vice President Americas and he will continue to hold this position, alongside the new group role.

Ramping up

As a consequence of the merger, Global Maritime Vryhof Anchors is ramping up and positioning the new divisions for further growth. As Øyvind Wathne explained: “We have already observed and clearly felt that markets for this type of specialist expertise are growing

rapidly. In the current market conditions, larger clients are redefining their outsourcing strategies and we, as a Group, are able to anticipate their needs and present them with an all-in service package as EPCI contractor, even in niche segments, including the marine renewables industry.”

The four new divisions will build on these solid foundations both through organic growth and new acquisitions. It is partly for this reason that we very deliberately opted to encapsulate this sense of ambition in our new Group tagline, ‘Blue Sea Thinking’. In line with this ambition, marine challenges will be approached from a fresh perspective, by developing solutions that deliver safety and innovation, simultaneously. Exciting opportunities

The Global Maritime Group will be directed from Stavanger, Norway, but will be a truly global organisation with a local focus. In total, the Global Maritime Group will have a workforce of around 650, shared across 30 offices in 21 countries, worldwide. As Øyvind Wathne put it: “Since we have no real peer in the industry, it is important that the Group is organised and presented in the best possible form, so our clients can benefit from the unique blend of capabilities. We are confident that we can convince our clients that we are indeed adding value for the future, that will help them focus even better on their core businesses.” Against this background, Wathne was keen to emphasise the firm belief held by Vryhof Anchors that business relationships are built on trust. “It has been and will always be our policy to provide our customers with quality products and services at a fair price, and to not allow other motives to influence our strategy. Customers who have been loyal to Vryhof Anchors for many years will continue to receive the same service and attention to detail from professional engineering and commercial teams, in our worldwide offices. They can rest assured that they will continue to receive the same service, the same

prices and the same quality they are accustomed to.” Vryhof Anchors has positioned itself as ‘leader’ in anchoring and mooring technology. Exactly what does this mean? Wathne explained: “Anchoring technology is all about focusing on an anchor point for example for a platform. Mooring technology on the other hand, deals with everything from below the floater right to the anchor point. Within the oil and gas industry, we are clear leaders when it comes to anchoring technology. In the field of Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) services, we are leaders when it comes to providing total mooring solutions. As Global Maritime Vryhof Anchors, we will be able to offer the full EPCI package for all comers.” What consequences will the merger have for the management structure within Global Maritime Vryhof Anchors? In the words of Wathne, again: “It means that Global Maritime Vryhof Anchors will be developed as the product and technology division within the international Global Maritime Group. The new management will be far more focused on financing and organisation. Hence the decision to appoint our financial specialist

Peter Uitbeijerse as CEO. It goes without saying that the entrepreneurial spirit so integral to Vryhof Anchors will be guaranteed within the merger, a fact that will above all be reflected for our clients, above all at business development level. Whereas prior to the merger I was CEO/Business Development Director, in the new situation, I will be able to focus fully on business development and implementing innovative solutions for anchoring challenges. In other words, the task I face is to bring together all the activities of the new division. In a period of declining oil prices and ever rising operational costs, the industry needs to find new ways to shape its own future. In the continuous push towards deeper waters and more hostile environments, increased cost efficiency is the only way to make operations in these areas profitable. More than ever, we need to focus on high-end technology.” Have all the structural changes been implemented? Wathne said: “In principle, we have now concluded the most important structural changes. We will however be further reinforcing the commercial office service, and will of course be making use of the larger network available to us within the Group. As of 1 January 2015, we have been joined worldwide by hundreds

of new colleagues. Take for example our office in Singapore, where we now have a staff of 60 as opposed to just two. And all those people can be deployed dealing with commercial and technical issues.”

Peter Uitbeijerse new CEO On 5 February 2015, Peter Uitbeijerse was appointed CEO of Global Maritime - Vryhof Anchors. Uitbeijerse was formerly employed as CFO at Arcoin Holding Group, a company operating within the oil, gas, logistics and trade sector, where he was responsible for managing the global financial aspects of the group. He has a proven track record of successfully leading international oil and gas businesses through growth phases, on the basis of organic growth and mergers and acquisitions, during his time with Ernst & Young.

Have you redefined the target groups? Wathne answered: “Effectively, we have not. Our focus is entirely on the oil and gas industry and the Marine Renewable Energy industry. On the other hand, via our contacts within the Global Maritime Group, we do indeed intend to be introduced to clients as early as the FEED phase.” In what way has the package of services offered by Global Maritime Vryhof Anchors been adapted, since 1 January of this year?

Normally speaking, the majority of contractors exclude weather delay risks in their contracts. Global Maritime Vryhof Anchors does not!”

Does the new service package from Global Maritime Vryhof Anchors mean that operators no longer need to calculate the anchoring systems for themselves?

“I can best answer that question,” suggested Wathne, “by giving you an example from practice. Vryhof has supplied the anchors and the mooring lines for a pilot project offshore. For phase two of this project, we were also invited as main contractor for the towage of the objects, as well as the actual installation including all procedures. We are using our ‘new’ sister companies as subcontractors. In other words, the supply of hardware is now part of a far broader scope of services. It has become just part of a total concept.”

What has specifically changed for your customers?

Wathne explained: “I fully believe we have a great deal to offer in that respect, because we operate a far broader technological horizon than operators, who often follow the same tried and tested paths. Our engineers are hard at work every day optimising anchoring technology and installation procedures, all with the aim of generating clear cost savings for our clients. In other words, we can take the risks and calculations from them, while guaranteeing that any system developed and installed by us will receive immediate approval from the certifying bodies. We make all the calculations for our clients, engineer the complete anchoring system and write the installation procedures. And if required, we will even carry out the installation itself.”

“Another element that could be described as unique is the fact that within this project, we have also accepted a certain weather window; in other words, downtime related to poor weather conditions. In the coastal area in question, we know exactly what weather conditions have prevailed over the past twenty years. On that basis, we have taken a calculated risk. Such a decision is clearly attractive for our customers.

18

2015

Wathne replied: “Whereas in the past our clients had to issue fragmented orders, we have now become full-service partners within our field. In other words, they can call on us for an all-encompassing service package including high-end engineering and contracting. Our overall goal is to serve our clients beyond their wish list, and to provide them with worry-free service. In other words, we aim to be the ultimate reliable partner. We can write procedures relating to installations. We can then contract and execute complete installation projects, and we have the expertise and software available to us, for developing not only mooring systems but also simulations. The added value for our clients is that they no longer have to bear all the risks. In partnership, we as Global Maritime Vryhof Anchors will take over a proportion of those risks, ourselves.”

So therein lies the direct profit for your clients? Wathne replied: “Absolutely. But I have yet another surprise, too. We are currently negotiating with a major

contractor. The intention is, on a project-by-project basis, that we will determine what anchor performance we can guarantee them. An offer of this kind- made in conjunction with our insurers – has never been seen before. The sole intention is to relieve the client of a proportion of the risk. In that sense, Global Maritime Vryhof Anchors is setting up its stall as the only anchor specialist in the world willing to guarantee a predetermined level of anchor performance, in close cooperation with the client.”

Breman Machinery from Genemuiden, the Netherlands

‘Whatever we promise, we guarantee to deliver’ Breman Machinery from Genemuiden, the Netherlands, specialists in the use of thick sheet material, thick steel, deformation, bending and welding, have been producing ground-breaking items of machinery and equipment for years. The orders undertaken range from simple work pieces to complex machine systems, all of them unique work items, with high tolerances and extreme dimensions.

Growing numbers of nationally and internationally-operating offshore and wind energy businesses are now discovering the services of this specialised machinery and equipment builder, with its own rolling mill and a modern production hall in the port of IJmuiden. This 1,500 m2 hall is equipped with four 60-tonne cranes and two 16-tonne cranes. The surrounding outdoor site covers a further 3,000 m2, with direct access to the water and with an open connection to the North Sea. Unique

Short delivery times combined with the highest possible quality are the inherent strengths of Breman Machinery. Co-director Henk Breman, responsible for sales and projects explained, “Requests often relate to components that are difficult to outsource. We are not manufacturers of series work; instead, we produce unique items. The components we produce demand considerable care and attention, and have to undergo complex finishing processes. Whereas in the past we were only required to supply components, more and more of our clients are now asking us to execute complex 20

turnkey projects, often in close collaboration with the customer. Take for example the execution of two orders from GustoMSC based in Schiedam, one of the leading design and engineering companies involved in all types of mobile units/vessels for the offshore industry. We also recently handed over several fixation systems and X-Y skidding systems, ready for installation on board ultra-harsh environment jack-up drilling rigs for Maersk Drilling, three of which are currently under construction at the Keppel FELS shipyard in Singapore, and a fourth at the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) shipyard in South Korea. Breman was responsible for the fabrication, welding, machinery and painting of both the fixation systems and the cantilevers, with the integrated sliding system.” Monopile Gripper

Breman Offshore is currently hard at work fabricating a second monopile gripper on behalf of Van Oord, a leading international contractor specialising in dredging, marine engineering and offshore projects (oil, gas and wind). Offshore Holland

spoke with HBO Mechanical Engineer Gijsbert Kamp, who also managed the fabrication of the gripper that was installed on the new jack-up installation vessel ‘Aeolus’, in the port of IJmuiden in mid-July 2014. This gripper has been designed to keep monopiles for offshore windfarms in the correct position and at the required inclination, while counteracting the loads applied to the pile by waves, wind, and currents, during wind turbine installations. The order for the new Monopole Gripper Frame 2.0, measuring 14.5 x 29 x 23.5 metres and weighing 560 mT, was awarded at the end of October last year, and is due to be handed over at the end of May 2015. Breman Offshore re-examined every component of the 2.0 gripper, and wherever possible made changes to improve both the production process and the quality of the product. Turnkey

Breman recently handed over several fixation systems and X-Y skidding systems to GustoMSC (design: GustoMSC).

Breman is increasingly focusing on winning and subsequently executing large-scale turnkey projects. Specifically for projects of this kind, the company had a hall built last year on the Leonarduskade in IJmuiden, that is mainly used for assembly work. This quayside is located at the tip of the Haringhaven dock, with an open connection to the North Sea. Breman also recently expanded its preservation department, so that even oversized components can be fabricated in one go, and fully preserved. 2015

Keppel Verolme Rotterdam

One of the largest dry-docks in Europe With one of the largest dry-docks in Europe and ideally located in Rotterdam, close to the oil and gas fields of the Netherlands, UK and Norway, with direct access to the North Sea, Keppel Verolme is the yard of choice for seagoing vessels and floating offshore units in the region.

One of the key assets of the Keppel Verolme yard in Rotterdam is the mammoth dry-dock. Originally built in 1970 to carry out maintenance to Large Crude Oil Carriers, the dock is used for dry-docking large offshore units and vessels nowadays. Measuring 405 metres in length and 90 metres in width, with a water depth of 11,06 metres it can accommodate up to three offshore units simultaneously. The intermediate wall in the dry dock

can be positioned at two locations and provides the yard the flexibility to undertake short and long term projects at the same time. Lewek Constellation

In late 2014 the shipshape ultra-high tension, deepwater, reel lay and heavy lift vessel ‘Lewek Constellation’ of owner EMAS Offshore Pte. Ltd. called on the Port of Rotterdam. First, the vessel went to Huisman in Schiedam,

for the installation of a Multi Lay system, a combined pipe-lay tower for both reel lay and flex lay. Thereafter, the vessel shifted to Keppel Verolme where she stayed in dry-dock for a couple of weeks. Keppel Verolme’s scope of work consisted of the installation of cylinders of the ROV moonpools, skidbeams, the prefabrication and installation of underdeck reinforcement and the prefabrication and installation of

the 150 tonne pedestal crane. Additionally, the yard replaced piping and carried out maintenance work to the thrusters. A couple of weeks later, the vessel left the Keppel Verolme yard and went back to Schiedam again. Here, Keppel Verolme finished its work on board the vessel. Once all works have been completed, EMAS will mobilize the vessel to the Gulf of Mexico. Deep Energy

In February 2015 another pipelay vessel visited the yard, the rigid reel-lay and J-lay vessel ‘Deep Energy’ from Technip UK Ltd. It was dry-docked in mid February 2015 for a period of 35 days. The vessel visited Keppel Verolme because it needed to prepare for warmer waters in Western Africa and Australia. The works consisted of water-washing and touch up of the underwater hull, dismounting of and providing of all 137 pcs of sea chest grids with a new full pain system.

Also, the main engine cooler bonnets and the port and starboard anchor handling device needed to be modified. The yard is assisting the client with the installation of a new welders workshop and modifications to the vessels onboard cranes. It also installed over 1500 meters of new cables for the ABB 10MW Azipods. High quality

In December the after sale hand-over to Malaysia’s Bumi Armadi took place. The new owner renamed the vessel ‘Armada Interprid’ and the FPSO spent a couple of weeks in dry-dock for inspection and cleaning and the retraction of the Hawser pipes. In spring the FPSO is scheduled to depart to Asia on the semi-submersible heavy lift vessel Dockwise ‘Vanguard’.

Another ‘shipeshape’ offshore vessel that is in the yard is the Floating Storage and Production Offloading (FPSO) unit ‘Armada Intrepid’. It arrived in 2014 under its former name FPSO Schiehallion after operating 14 years for BP at the Schiehallion oil field in the United Kingdom. First the FPSO was moored in the Caland Canal for preparation prior to its yard stay. At the start of September, the FPSO was moored at Keppel Verolme. The yard assisted BP on both locations with works related to the decommissioning of the vessel.

With a longstanding tradition of high quality execution and delivery, Keppel Verolme continues to strive to meet customer needs and deliver projects safely, on time and within budget. Leveraging the strength of its parent company, Keppel Offshore & Marine, in technology and project execution, Keppel Verolme is poised for continued growth into the future, offering innovative and cost-effective solutions for the offshore industry.

Unique TLQs for worldwide now aimed at Scandinavian market

Breakthrough in the field of Temporary Living Quarters

The traditional offshore sector is not the place you would generally associate with trendsetting in the field of luxury living quarters. Nonetheless, clear links do exist. Certainly in the case of Seafox TLQ. Seafox, the Dutch developer and rental service for Temporary Living Quarters, has established a unique tradition. For more than 20 years, the Hoofddorp-based company has been a powerhouse in setting trends for temporary offshore accommodation and sleeping quarters. Fresher and more up to date than ever, Seafox TLQ has now launched a unique series of super-comfortable living quarters; the first in the world, in fact, to comply with the NORSOK guidelines developed by the Norwegian petroleum industry, and the highest industry standard DNV 2.7-2.

Above all the consistency in style and design means that these innovative, eye-catching TLQs from Seafox as it were embrace their (temporary) residents. John Verdonk, Business Unit

24

2015

Manager at Seafox TLQ and Ton Dorresteijn, Operations Director at Hertel Offshore were brimming with self-confidence, when Offshore Holland met with them to discuss the

surprising functional capabilities of the spectacular-looking living quarters. For years, Hertel Offshore have been co-designers and builders of the Seafox TLQs.

“Together with Hertel, we developed this new TLQ in response to specific questions from our customer base,” explained Verdonk. “But we have in fact gone even further. Together with an interior designer, we have focused specifically on the spatial layout, shape and colour of the living environment, use of light and material. It is all about the welfare of the people spending time away from home, and for whom appealing and practical home comforts can clearly influence their performance at sea.” Dorresteijn added, “In our perception, a home is not made up of a series of separate elements; it is an organic whole based on synergy between the various elements. The separate spaces must interact with one another, to make the individual components feel like a single unit. With that in mind, during the development phase, we adopted a pragmatic and above all visionary approach, in order to create a pleasant living environment at sea, for people far from family and friends. The result is this unique TLQ sleeping module, with its eye-catching design.” Privacy

The new type TLQ is 10.20 metres long, 3.30 metres wide and 3.30 metres high, making it approximately 50% longer than the previous series

placed by Seafox TLQ on the rental market. Verdonk explained, “That series consisted of 50 units sleeping up to four people in two separate cabins each with a bunk bed. Our new TLQs, intended specifically for the Scandinavian market, consist of two spacious cabins with a single bed and a separate wet cell intended for use by two people. This gives the residents of the new series a greater sense of privacy, and the opportunity to briefly spend time on their own. This is the perfect response to the wish expressed to allow people to enjoy total privacy during their free time on board a production platform, drilling rig or offshore vessel.” Top quality

A brief inspection of the new TLQs soon reveals them to indeed be the Rolls Royce of temporary living quarters. The unit shell fully complies with every safety requirement, and appears extremely solid. Everything is of top quality. The walls, a full four millimetres thick, make the TLQ completely soundproof, while the special window allows incidence of a remarkable volume of light. There is all-round LED lighting and each unit has its own HVAC and sprinkler system as well as smoke and gas detection and alarm functions. Every bedroom features a wall-mounted TV

and Internet access. The beds are pleasantly wide and long (90x210 cm) and the sanitary unit is fitted with modern glass shower doors and underfloor heating. The taps and showers are from the well-known brand Grohe, while the remarkably elegant bathroom furniture is supplied by Villeroy & Boch. First order

Hertel Offshore recently delivered the first 14 units of the new type TLQ to Seafox TLQ. The interlinking units have now been installed as additional sleeping facilities on board the Seafox 4, a six-leg, self-elevating accommodation, maintenance and (well) workover unit. The Seafox 4, operated by Seafox Contractors, serves a large range of offshore requirements, including; monopile installation, well services, subsea well intervention and platform upgrade campaign support. Manager John Verdonk is currently hard at work completing the contract details for a second order, for the delivery of 24 units. As Verdonk explained, “A number of potential clients have already visited the construction site here in Rotterdam, and all expressed considerable appreciation for what we have to offer. They are are convinced that their crew would certainly view the topflight TLQs as ‘their home away from home’.”

Airborne Oil & Gas acquires market leadership with unique technology

Spoolable, fully-bonded Thermoplastic Composite Pipes

The high-tech business Airborne Oil & Gas (AOG) based in IJmuiden, the Netherlands, has developed a strong composite thermoplastic pipe that compared with steel pipes offers huge advantages for the production of oil and gas at sea. The 9,300 m2 elongated building where AOG produced the world’s first composite pipes for use in deep water is located alongside the IJmondhaven, offering a direct link to the North Sea. “In just five years, we have acquired market leadership in the field of manufacturing spoolable, fully-bonded, Thermoplastic Composite Pipes. These light-weight, high strength and corrosion-free pipes, in the form of downlines, flowlines, jumpers and hoses, are deployed for pre-commissioning, well intervention (EOR), flowline and P&A applications. These pipes offer their users decisive advantages in deep water applications,” explained Rogier Cornelisse, Area Sales Manager, Africa, Middle East, Far East & Australia.

26

2015

Effectively, with its latest pipe products, Airborne Oil & Gas has further developed the material technology from the original parent company Airborne International, that produces composite products for space, astronomy and aerospace applications. This Dutch aerospace technology has now for a number of years also been in use at the seabed. “Our pipes are the result of sixteen years of research and development,” explained Cornelisse. “AOG was founded in 1999, and since that time has extensively tested the pipes developed by us, in close collaboration with potential clients, including Shell.” By 2012, AOG had reached the stage of being the only company in the world capable of manufacturing pipes on a production line in a continuous length of between three and six kilometres. The pipes are then wound like a ‘hose’ around a huge reel. The company now employs a staff of 120. The number of orders has risen massively, production in the new factory has grown considerably, and the decision was recently taken to produce jumpers, on stock. The phase of generating awareness is clearly over, and Cornelisse in fact predicts an expansion of production capacity in 2016, with the installation of additional carrousels. “Interest in the products from AOG is constantly growing, to the extent that we intend to manufacture products on stock, starting with jumpers. We have now reached the point at which we can predict how the pipes will behave in every conceivable situation, and even how they will behave as they become older. That is precisely what the oil and gas industry wants: not only reliable product specifications, but also predicable products.”

collapse pressures, allowing operations down to 3000 metres and beyond. The concept involves glass fibres embedded and melt-fused into a fully-bonded wall pipe. The resultant composite pipe offers a unique combination of benefits. Frits Kronenburg, Areas Sales Manager Europe & Americas listed the properties that are unmatched by any other product. “The pipe has a high internal and external pressure rating, high tensile strength combined with low weight, and a smooth bore combined with vacuum capability. Due to its high allowable strain, the pipe has fantastic spoolability, and high bending fatigue. Moreover the non-metallic materials that make up the structure of the pipe are impervious to corrosion and ensure longevity, while the ductile materials used during the production process result in toughness, impact resistance and residual strength.” These lightweight, flexible composite pipes solve a number of the problems that have faced operators and major contractors using steel pipes,

for years. For oil and gas production at extreme depths, the massive weight of steel pipes is a major disadvantage. Costly facilities are needed for installing the production platform and risers, and keeping it in position, for at least twenty years. On top of that, the continuing manufacturing process for our pipes considerably shortens the required installation time. Another problem is corrosion, a phenomenon that above all affects pipes on the seabed. Costly inspections are needed to monitor the corrosion process and chemicals have to be applied to prevent the corrosion itself. Pipes from composite materials are corrosion-free and capable of withstanding seabed water pressures of up to three hundred bar. Kronenburg continued: “Our pipes are also ideally suitable for intervention work; in other words, the task of stimulating production from an oil or gas field, for example at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Brazil, West Africa or in the Gulf of Mexico. For the time being, for these

applications, relatively thin-walled steel pipes have had to be used, so that they remain reelable. Due to the thinness of their walls, these flexible steel pipes have to be replaced after a relatively short time. A pipe from AOG has a much longer service life. At the end of the day, this fact considerably reduces the OPEX, making our product much more attractive for our customers, worldwide.” All around the world, oil companies are putting more and more fields into production, in which the oil or gas contains acidic components such as hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide. In the past, such fields were avoided. With steel pipes, these acids lead to additional corrosion problems. Our composite pipes, however, are impervious to acid attack. Finally, thanks to their relatively low weight,

the pipes from AOG make it possible to produce oil and gas at sea at depths in excess of two kilometres, because when underwater, the composite pipes are 80 to 90 % lighter than steel pipes.

on board the ship is no longer necessary, and that also means safer application. In addition, the use of continuous pipes saves a great deal of time and money, and composite pipes have a much longer useful life.”

Profit

Are you saying that operators, service companies and contractors have a great deal to gain from the use of composite pipes? “Absolutely,” argued Cornelisse. “The reels containing our pipes can be lowered into the sea using smaller vessels, at lower daily rates, therefore automatically reducing the installation costs. And because the pipes require less maintenance and demonstrate greater longevity, the total costs, including the purchase of the pipes for the client, are far lower. All in all, these characteristics mean considerable savings for the operator. Pipe welding

Shell

Although Shell was involved in the development of the composite pipe right from the start, the worldrenowned oil company only acquired an interest in AOG as investor and shareholder, in November 2014. “Shell Technology Ventures is a most welcome addition to our shareholder base, at this phase of our development,” confirmed Cornelisse. “The company has a reputation for technology innovation and early adoption. We are proud to be associated with Shell, and expect to learn a lot from the cooperation.”

He continued: “AOG is qualified to supply hydrocarbon-bearing offshore flowlines to Shell, worldwide. Shell in turn can accelerate the implementation of our products, across its large footprint in the industry.” In a recent press release, Geert van de Wouw, Managing Director of Shell Technology Ventures responded, “AOG possesses a unique technology, with potentially game-changing impact on the offshore industry. The ultra-lightweight, corrosion free pipe systems can significantly lower the costs of a number of applications and will enable new applications.” Following successful completion of an extensive qualification programme, AOG recently also qualified its Thermoplastic Composite Pipe (TCP) as a technically-accepted pipe material for Shell. The complete testing and the related documentation have demonstrated the compliance of TCP Flowlines in accordance with Shell’s Design and Engineering Practice (DEP) 31.40.10.20-Gen for Flexible Composite Pipe Systems, including use in offshore flowline and deep water well service applications, and hydrocarbon service. Clients

One West African operator recently decided to deploy a TCP Downline

from Airborne for acid stimulation, to boost oil production. As well as for Shell, AOG is also producing composite pipes for the British Subsea7 and for Subsea and Chevron from America, Statoil and IKM from Norway and Petronas from Malaysia. All of these companies are confident that they will be able to generate huge value from the new technology represented by the composite pipes from AOG. “Innovation is needed now, more than ever,” commented Frits Kronenburg. “In a period of declining oil prices and ever rising operational costs, the industry needs to find new ways to shape its own future. In the continuous push towards deeper waters and more hostile environments, increased cost efficiency is the only way to make operations in these areas profitable. Composites, and our TCP in particular, provide the tools to change the way the industry is working today. TCP Downlines and TCP Jumpers enable access to wells in the deepest waters, allowing interventions to increase well performance without the need for costly, riser-based systems. Our TCP Flowlines rigorously resolve corrosion issues, while at the same time lowering installation costs, resulting overall in significant cost reductions.”

Acid stimulation Earlier this year, Airborne Oil & Gas (AOG) was awarded a contract for the supply of a composite downline, jumpers and deployment system for acid stimulation. A West African operator selected TCP technology as the preferred solution for injecting large volumes of stimulation fluids in deep water off the coast of West Africa. AOG will supply a 1450 metre-long, three-inch ID 5000 psi working pressure TCP Downline and TCP Jumpers. The jumpers will connect the downline to the injection skid and subsea wellhead. The Dutch company will also supply the complete deployment spread, including reeler, tensioner and all pipe ancillaries such as end fittings, bend restrictors etc. AOG will undertake all the related engineering, including global dynamic analysis of the downline system. The TCP Downline and TCP Jumpers enable the high flow rates required for effectively stimulating reservoirs. Acid stimulation is a key element in the EOR strategy of most operators. In cases where the flow rate is a prerequisite, the excellent fatigue performance, light weight and easy maintenance of TCP technology ensure a favourable business case as compared to alternatives such as steel coiled tubing. Following on from other orders recently won by AOG, this order is clear evidence of growing acceptance of TCP technology in the offshore industry, and of the leadership of Airborne Oil & Gas in the acid stimulation and intervention business. Cornelisse commented: “We are working with all of today’s leaders in the field of intervention, stimulation and plug and abandonment, and predict strong growth over the coming period.”

Van Oord’s cable-laying vessel ‘Nexus’ operational

Tangible proof of strength of Dutch maritime cluster Early March 2015 Van Oord, the Dutch leading international contractor specialising in dredging, marine engineering and offshore projects (oil, gas and wind), took delivery of the ‘Nexus’, its first cable-laying vessel for constructing offshore wind parks.

The vessel was built by Damen Shipyards Group at its shipyard in Galati, Romania. The modern vessel is nearly 123 metres long and more than 27 metres in the beam. The ‘Nexus’ has been equipped with a cable carrousel with a capacity of 5,000 tonnes to install long export cables. The deck layout is the result of in-house engineering and development in anticipation of future market requirements for challenging cable installation works. There are accommodations for 90 people on board. Nexus is the Latin word for connection; a suitable name for a ship that will connect offshore wind turbines with each other and to the mainland.

30

2015

The first project for the ‘Nexus’ will be the Gemini offshore wind park that will be built 85 kilometres off the coast of Groningen. The construction phase has started and te park will be fully operational in 2017. The 600 MW wind park will consist of 150 wind turbines with a capacity of 4 MW each. After construction, the park will deliver electricity to more than 1.5 million people. Van Oord is involved in the Gemini project in two ways. First, as a 10% shareholder in the project, and second as the EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contractor that will build the wind park. The EPC contract encompasses supplying and installing the foundations, the entire electrical

infrastructure, including the offshore and onshore high voltage stations, the cables, and the installation of the Siemens wind turbines. Van Oord will be deploying several vessels, including the specially developed offshore installation vessel ‘Aeolus’ and the cable-laying vessel ‘Nexus’, for the construction of the wind park. The ‘Nexus’ is tangible proof of the strength of the Dutch maritime cluster. The ship was built on the order of a Dutch ship owner, at a shipyard owned by a Dutch company, to be used to build the largest Dutch offshore wind park that will contribute significantly to the implementation of the Dutch Energy Agreement.

VBMS Managing Director Arno van Poppel on his ideas for the future:

‘Opportunities for further diversification’

Managing Director Arno van Poppel.

The Dutch company VBMS specialises in subsea power cable installation, Balance of Plant maintenance for the renewable market, SURF installation for the oil & gas market and the installation of interconnectors. The company delivers added value with its robust end-to-end project management and multi-disciplinary grid-to-grid solutions. Managing Director of the company, with its headquarters in Papendrecht, is Arno van Poppel (49). “We officially started business in 2007, and within that short period have grown to become one of the largest players in the field of cable installation. Worldwide, we have laid almost 1000 inter array cables, and installed more than 800 kilometres of export cable.”

Lifting the Trenchformer overboard.

In 2007, VBMS broke off from the VolkerWessel business Visser & Smit Hanab, and became an independent business under the name VSMC (Visser & Smit Marine Contracting). The establishment of the new cable installation business turned out to be the perfect choice, as the order book quickly filled up. On many occasions, the company had to call in additional equipment from Boskalis Offshore. Arno van Poppel joined the company in 2012, as Managing Director. “VBMS has specialised in total solutions for the installation of electricity cables in deep and shallow water, flexible flowlines and umbilicals. We have for example been involved in a number of major European offshore wind projects including the London Array (the world’s largest offshore windfarm, with a capacity of 630 MW), Walney, Ormonde and recently Nordsee Ost, Luchterduinen and Butendiek. The close collaboration with Boskalis meant it was a logical step for that company to acquire a 50% interest

in VBMS, in 2013. That also explains why we have been operating under the name VBMS, VolkerWessels Boskalis Marine Solutions, since 1 September 2014.” Strength

VBMS has permanent access to two DP2 vessels, the ‘Nduranc’e and the ‘Stemat Spirit’. Both have the unique characteristic of being the only two DP2 vessels in the world that can be deliberately grounded. Van Poppel explained: “The major advantage of this capability is that it enables us to bring the cable right ashore. This in turn allows far shorter installation times for our customers. At the same time, the cable runs far less risk of being damaged, since less work has to be carried out on the cable itself.” Alongside the ‘Ndurance’ and ‘Stemat Spirit’, VBMS also operates the barge Stemat 87 and the multipurpose barges Pontra Maris, Stemat 82 and Stemat 89. These floating facilities can make use of a number of carrousel units (1200-4600 t), tensioners,

cable ploughs, seabed crawler trenchers, reel drive units, overboard chutes and cable quadrants. The company’s trenchers include the Trenchformer, a vehicle deployed for the first time on the Luchterduinen project on behalf of Eneco, off the coast of Noordwijk, the Netherlands. This multipurpose mechanical cable trencher is suitable for working in a wide range of soil types and with a variety of cable types, and can carry out a complete installation in tidal areas as well as in shallow and deep water. The caterpillar vehicle can both jet and cut. Jetting is most commonly carried out during shore pulls at sandy locations, as was the case with Luchterduinen. As well as working alongside a cable lay vessel, the Trenchformer can also be deployed as an independent spread. Other trenchers deployed for VBMS include the BSS-II (Burial Sledge System), that is able to lay and bury a cable simultaneously to a maximum depth of six metres, and the Sea Stallion 4-DB plough.

project in the North Sea.

This plough was specially developed Platlaying power cables in aggressive for soil types, in shallow water. Van Poppel continued: “Our strength lies in the fact that we are always able to deploy the right tool at the right time, according to the soil type. You need to be able to call upon a whole raft of digging tools to ensure the ideal installation method, depending on the soil conditions. The added value of VBMS is that we can offer not only the equipment, but also the knowledge of design and engineering, in-house.” Cum laude

Since the company’s establishment in 2007, until now, Europe has been the main area of operations for VBMS, more specifically offshore windfarms in British and German waters. Elsewhere, on behalf of Boskalis, an interconnector (DC transmission cable) was laid between Java and Bali (in Indonesia). “We have also carried out installation projects off the coast of Belgium on behalf of Tideway from Breda, but as a Dutch company, we above all enjoy working in the Dutch section of the North Sea, both on

34

2015

behalf of the wind sector and the oil and gas sector. In that respect, we have certainly graduated cum laude! As part of the Eneco Luchterduinen wind energy project off the coast of Noordwijk, as subcontractors to Van Oord, in mid-October 2014, we installed a 25.7 kilometre-long export cable, thereby linking the offshore windfarm to land. Within the oil and gas sector, Wintershall has awarded us two projects, one of which has already been completed. The work involved the installation of a 19.5 kilometrelong umbilical in 29 metres of water, from the L8-P4 platform to the L6-B platform, approximately 30 kilometres northwest of Den Helder.” The next order involves the laying of an 18.5 kilometre-long umbilical from the Ravn platform in the Danish section of the North Sea to the A6-A platform in the German section. This job is due to be carried out this summer, by the cable lay vessel ‘Ndurance’. Van Poppel continued: “By completing the L6-B project, VBMS demonstrated its capability as a reliable partner for oil and gas operators active on the North Sea. We deliver high-quality work,

on time and on budget, and are naturally delighted that Wintershall has offered us yet another opportunity to show just what we can do.” First

As already explained, the first national offshore job awarded to VBMS was the Eneco Luchterduinen project, due to be up and running by the end of 2015. Using the new installation vessel ‘Aeolus’, 44 foundation piles were driven at sea, while for the installation of the 150 kilovolt AC power cable, VBMS deployed its 99 metre-long ‘Ndurance’. The decision was also taken to make use of the Trenchformer, during the installation process. Using this innovative trencher, a cable is buried in the seabed using a high-pressure water jet. In other words, the sand is liquefied with the addition of water, enabling the cable to sink into the ground, under its own weight. Yet another first of which Arno van Poppel is justifiably proud. “The Ndurance, with a carrousel on board containing almost 26 kilometres of 32 cm-diameter cable, was run aground on the beach at Noordwijk,

Running the DP2 cable lay vessel Stemat Spirit aground.

early in the morning of 16 October. On that same morning, the Trenchformer was driven onto the beach, and the cable was pulled ashore from the ship, using one of our own winches. Subsequently the ‘Ndurance’ set sail for the windfarm, unrolling the cable behind it, while the Trenchformer travelled from the beach along the seabed, trailing behind the vessel and burying the cable all the way to the windfarm out at sea, 23 kilometres off the Dutch coast.” Complete range

Alongside the three core market segments renewables (export and array), oil and gas (umbilicals, risers and flowlines) and interconnectors, VBMS also offers integrated maintenance concepts for offshore windfarms, and the company even has a division that focuses on specific projects such as cable repair, crossings, landfalls and outfalls. “VBMS has become a total solution provider, and as part of that process, anticipates changing market needs,” explained Arno van Poppel. “Our clients want us to offer a

complete range of activities, and in that respect, I feel it is safe to suggest that within the market segment in which we operate, we are the largest engineering party out there. We are able to engineer, contract and implement complete projects including trenching, rock dumping, dredging, onshore work, landfall and offshore work; all these disciplines are available at VBMS, in-house.” The future

Diversification represents a guarantee of continuity. For Arno van Poppel, that fact offers huge opportunities for the future of VBMS. In his opinion, the company is still too dependent on the offshore wind sector. “For that reason alone, I am delighted that our first sallies into the oil and gas sector have proven positive,” he suggested. “In addition, the renewables sector has recently become ever less predictable, in response to a whole raft of circumstances. Plenty of projects are still in the pipeline but a number have been postponed by between two and three years. For VBMS, that is the most important

reason for also operating in the oil and gas market. For the time being, my ideas are focused on operations in shallow water, in water depths of up to perhaps one hundred metres. Within VBMS, we have already accrued considerable knowledge and expertise in the field of soil conditions, engineering and ship types. With all that specific equipment, and with our own staff of specialist craftsmen, in shallow waters, we can in fact operate many times more cost-effectively than parties that until recently were employed exclusively in the oil and gas market, and as a consequence use very costly equipment. Right from day one, our focus has been on efficiency, speed and cost reduction. The drive to achieve all three is in our genes, and the result is considerable cost savings. Managers of offshore windfarms are living proof of the savings available, and the same will soon also apply for oil and gas operators. We will have to fight our corner, but I am convinced that our time and money-saving alternatives for the laying of flexible flowlines, umbilicals and power cables will help us score well with the oil companies.”

Designed to compensate for sea induced motions

Innovative knuckle boom crane in operation Barge Master, headquartered in Capelle a/d IJssel, the Netherlands, successfully delivered its first Barge Master T40 (BM-T40) motion compensated knuckle boom crane. The BM-T40 is installed on the ‘Walk to Work’ vessel the ‘Kroonborg’ of Wagenborg and compensates for sea induced vessel motions in roll, pitch and heave directions at the base of the crane, up to 3 metres significant wave height.

The BM-T40 is designed for offshore support vessels that are used to transfer small loads and personnel to (unmanned) offshore oil and gas platforms or wind turbines. The BM-T40 features a small footprint and is designed to compensate for sea induced motions of a knuckle boom crane with a lifting capacity of 15mT at a ten metres radius or 5mT at a 20 meter radius up to 35 metres height. Typical loads include hoses, tools, spare parts, maintenance equipment,

small wind turbines and solar panels weighing 1.5mT to 5mT. The BM-T40 is also perfectly suited for ballasting or grouting operations. Besides the suitability of safely lifting loads, the T40 is man riding certified for safe personnel transfer. Wagenborg will use the motion compensated crane to service and maintain NAM/Shell gas production platforms in the North Sea. Oil & Gas platforms have become smaller and

more flexible during the last 40 years. They no longer have a resident crew or helicopter pads which means frequent journeys to and from the platform by ship in order to perform maintenance work. With the new ‘Walk to Work’ vessel these operations are executed in a safer, more efficient and effective manner. The vessel is unique because multiple functions are combined for the first time. The vessel can accommodate 20 crew members and 40 service technicians, chemicals can be stored and transferred, and thanks to the Barge Master T40 system materials can be transferred safely with wave heights of up to three meters. Through utilizing new technology, NAM is able to safely continue harvesting gas on the North Sea. Barge Master develops and produces motion compensation systems for the marine and offshore industry. The Barge Master T40 is based on the same principle as the Barge Master T700 motion compensation platform: roll, pitch and heave motions are actively compensated, while surge, sway and yaw are fixated. The motion compensation systems are developed together with Bosch Rexroth.

Three unique features for high capacity and flexible cargo systems

Fourth IMT997 PSV delivered to wide acclaim

The ‘Pacific Liberty’.

The naming ceremony for the fourth in a series of innovative, fuel-efficient IMT997 L-Class Platform Supply vessels designed by Offshore Ship Designers UK arm OSD-IMT for Swire Pacific Offshore Operations Pte Ltd (SPO) took place earlier this year in Kyoto, Japan.

38

2015

The ‘Pacific Liberty’ was built at the Maizuru shipyard of Japan Marine United (JMU) Corporation, which also built the three OSD-IMT-designed sisterships Pacific Leader, Pacific Legacy and Pacific Legend, which were delivered last year. OSD-IMT’s PSV design has attracted

a great deal of positive comment. SPO has confirmed that the L-Class series plays an important role in the development and expansion of its diverse fleet of 90 offshore support vessels, providing an exceptionally reliable, economical and flexible solution to the company’s offshore marine support requirements and

The ‘Pacific Legacy’.

enabling it to enhance its capabilities as a leading maritime services provider. The modern, fuel-efficient design of the 5,252 dwt IMT997 L-Class vessels delivers exceptionally reliable, economical and flexible solutions and is well-suited for supply duties in deep-water environments. The vessels have a large cargo-carrying capacity and bulk cargo system and feature fuel-efficient propulsion pods as well as a four-engine diesel-electric power plant. The bulbous-bow design embraces various operating speed, draught and sea state options which Offshore Support Vessels (OSVs) typically operate in and is designed to maximise effectiveness over a wide range. The main deck has a clear space of 912 square metres. The hull has been designed for a 7.5-year window between class-required mandatory dockings, and propulsion and tunnel thrusters have been selected for their ability to be exchanged with the vessel afloat. The highest ERN number has been

The ‘Pacific Leader’.

selected to ensure excellent station-keeping capability. This has been achieved through the installation of 3 x 990 Kilowatt variable controllable pitch tunnel thrusters. The power management system has been set up with selectable operating modes that have pre-set operating load-dependent start / stop points for the generator sets. These pre-set values are programmable depending on different operating profiles. Unique features

The vessel has three unique features for high capacity and flexible cargo systems. The Cargomaxx bulk system allows for the carriage of both dry and wet bulk cargoes in five separate tanks. This system uses a pressure vacuum system to load and unload the cargo, and also incorporates a product-weighing system to accurately measure the weight of the product delivered as individual parcels or as an aggregated amount over a period of time. Meanwhile, BC compliance allows the vessel to carry up to 1800 m3 of Noxious Liquid Substance (NLS) in ten dedicated tanks arranged in pairs with full re-circulation systems. Last but not least, the vessel tank layout has been arranged for future upgrading to carry low-flashpoint liquids to DNV LFL class

notation to a capacity of approx. 180 m3. The main deck is designed to accommodate four lengths of drill pipe or casing, with safe access for the deck crew between joints. The cargo discharge manifold is also ergonomically designed for ease of connection and to ensure safe hose deployment overboard. The cargo rails are prepared for the installation of cargo rail-travelling cranes on both the port and starboard side. These cranes can carry up to 15 tonnes and can cover the full cargo deck area. The vessel’s fire-fighting pump is independently driven, using a variable speed electric motor. This is designed to improve operating efficiency through a quick start-up time and reliability through a simple direct-drive system. The cabin outfitting is MLC 2006-compliant, with low noise and enhanced floor areas. The crew’s health and recreational needs are well catered for with a spacious gym equipped with aerobic and other equipment. Other onboard facilities include the lounge, a gaming area and an internet café.

Dutch expertise in oil and gas treatment equipment

Frames provides the vital link between well and pipeline Dutch pioneers sailed the seven seas; Dutch engineers created the delta works; and the Dutch economy is one of the most competitive knowledge economies in the world. We are seen as hard-working, innovative and honest, but also as reliable, business-like and competitive. Above all, the Dutch supply and service companies in the upstream/downstream oil and gas industry have the knowledge, experience and position to be absolute world leaders when it comes to creating innovations that add true value for the customer. With due pride, in previous issues of Offshore Holland, we have presented to you many Dutch experts under the heading ‘sustainable and innovative’. This time, the featured company is Frames, a multifaceted business with head offices in Alphen aan den Rijn. Frames offers decades of experience in engineering and supplying customdesigned and modularised oil/gas treatment equipment. The services of Frames are tailored to your needs, including projects in civil engineering, construction and installation activities required on site. In visual terms, the company with its products is less eye-catching when compared to the spectacular vessels from Huisman, Damen or Allseas. This however in no way detracts from the success with which Frames has clearly put itself on the map of the Netherlands and indeed the rest of the world, in 2015.

40

2015

The inviting introduction to the company’s website reads, ‘We are Frames, a family of oil and gas solutions’. Offshore Holland held this interview with Léon van Bossum Marketing & Sales Director and Winand La Haye, General Manager of Integrated Solutions, which covers the segments Total Plant Solutions and Modules. Their two faces radiated their obvious enthusiasm. Clearly, for many years, they have found themselves in their element, at Frames. Both gentlemen combine drive with a modern vision on business practice, youthful innovative spirit, and total dedication. They show a passion for separation technology, oil and gas treatment, flow control and safeguarding systems, heat exchangers, modules and total plant solutions. Their self-confidence practically speaks for itself. Order intake is excellent. Frames has plenty of work in the form of fascinating projects for a wide range of clients, both in the Netherlands and abroad.

Tulip Oil’s Hemrik Plant The Dutch Donkerbroek and Hemrik development on behalf of Tulip Oil is a fast track Total Plant Solution project in which Frames supplied gas treatment facilities. The project execution strategy developed by Frames focused on fast delivery, in combination with the company’s engineering capabilities to optimise capital and operational costs, resulted in a successful project. All the systems employed are modularised, thereby minimising on-site work and reducing the time required for site installation and start-up. Including 3 weeks of commissioning, the complete construction period was just three months. In combination with the already completed pipeline scope, the Hemrik Plant was ready for operation in the second week of February 2015.

In a period of just over ten years, the number of employees has grown steadily from 60 to more than 500, and worldwide the company now operates offices in the Netherlands, Brazil, the United States, Aruba, the United Kingdom, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Malaysia, India and Russia. From all corners of the globe, clients regularly call at the company’s Dutch head offices, in Alphen aan den Rijn. Global

“We clearly are a global player. However, over the past few years, we have been too sober and too modest in internationally broadcasting our successful total project solutions and their quality,” admitted Léon van Bossum when confronted with the claim that the brand awareness of Frames is not entirely in line with the company’s impressive list of references. “We are for example ‘Suppliers by Appointment’ to the Dutch natural gas producer NAM. Of the 28 clusters

installed onshore in the Dutch gas province of Groningen, over the past decade, the process installation for all of them has come from Frames. We may have been less than effusive in the way we have talked about the projects brought to a successful conclusion; perhaps we have not communicated enough. Instead, our focus was entirely on the work itself, and eradicating the concerns of our clients. Over the past few years, we have abundantly demonstrated that using our products, our clients can produce at lower costs, while achieving higher safety levels. It is therefore entirely possible that not everyone knows who we are, and what we do. Naturally that is not the case for our loyal customer base.”

over the past few years, we have also made heavy investments in our project management, for example by attracting young, well-trained representatives from a wide variety of disciplines.”

“As a technology-driven company, we constantly adopt an innovative and efficient approach. All the solutions generated by that approach are based on our principle choice in favour of sustainability. Within that framework,

Innovation

Van Bossum expressed the conviction that the only way to make a real difference in this sector is to continue to invest in the level of knowledge and expertise of the company’s staff. He then pointed out that his R&D colleagues are constantly working on new technological developments and adaptations to the product portfolio at Frames. “Nonetheless, our greatest innovation lies in improving and optimising existing technologies,” he added.

One recent example of this innovative approach is the Thiopaq O&G System for the safe and efficient removal of hydrogen sulphide during sweetening, for example in upstream applications.

2015

41

By removing H2S and converting it into elemental sulphur in a single process, the new system improves gas value, while creating a saleable form of sulphur, highly sought after in the agricultural industry. Other examples include MEG Recovery and WISE technology. By efficiently and effectively removing water and salts from the commonly-used hydrate inhibitor monoethylene glycol (MEG), the MEG Recovery and WISE Desalination Process helps cut operating and maintenance costs, while keeping production wellheads in peak production. Total Plant Solutions

With due modesty, Van Bossum’s colleague Winand La Haye referred to the Frames technologies that have proven attractive in every region around the world. He went on, “By employing that technological expertise and with our foreign offices as added value, we have become a global business player, backed up by the flexibility of a small, local operation. The added value of that combination is that for an international assignment, we are able to establish a team made up of people of different nationalities; people who not only have the essential specific knowledge of their products, but who are also conversant with the local culture and other drives.” Practice has now demonstrated that such an integrated cooperative approach has a clearly positive outcome in finding solutions to any gas treatment issues. La Haye continued, “As thoroughbred product developers, we fabricate most of our systems, ourselves. All our shell & tube heat exchangers are always built in-house. But if outsourcing is a better option, when it comes to fabricating

42

2015

massive steel structures and large pressure vessels, we sometimes also opt for external production facilities. In that way, as it were, we raise the various technologies we have in-house over otherwise restricting boundaries. System engineering for example, is often carried out here in the Netherlands, while actual fabrication is undertaken locally, elsewhere in the world, under the supervision of experts from Frames. In principle, we build wherever the customer wants us to. Some customers attach much importance to ‘local content’ in response to which we simply build ‘just around the corner’. Customers of Frames always purchase both know-how and products. We take complete responsibility for our products. Even if we outsource actual fabrication, our customers always receive a true Frames product. The fact that we always take responsibility is an unusual business trait, certainly when it comes to integrated solutions. All the technology we offer our customers is viewed as Frames technology. That is what makes us unique. Frames is not an organisation that has grown by purchasing products smartly and then selling them on. We are not afraid to face up to risks. It is indeed our ambition to make innovative and sustainable technology workable, as part of a total package. That is what makes Frames a total solution provider.” Integrated Solutions

When asked to explain the company’s activities, Van Bossum launched into a passionate presentation, describing Frames as an experienced group of technology innovators, operating in multidisciplinary teams. “We strongly believe that our product knowhow translates into added value for the

management of complex projects. Our multidisciplinary engineering teams are led by a project manager who is the single point of contact for our clients. Frames is fully committed to meeting the client’s expectations during all stages of a project, while supplying reliable products. We will always go that extra mile where needed, and for many of our clients this has been one of the reasons for continuing to work with us.” Van Bossum, then referred to the Frames Family Tree which describes the extensive Frames portfolio, reproduced on the next page. “In the upstream oil and gas market, we have been operating for more than 30 years in three segments, namely Onshore, Offshore and Floaters. Within these three segments, all the products we supply are broken down into a number of subcategories; Oil & Water, Gas and Flow Control & Safeguarding, Integrated Solutions and Services.”

‘With our foreign offices as added value, we have become a global business player, backed up by the flexibility of a small, local operation.’ Winand La Haye, General Manager of Integrated Solutions

La Haye continued, “In principle, we deliver all our products as individual systems. To supply a fully-integrated solution, at some point in the past, we established the category Integrated Solutions, where we combine both theoretical and practical knowledge by making full use of the technology and knowledge available within our group. Knowledge and craftsmanship are what we are all about. They are our strongest points. Frames is not an engineering firm, nor is it a fabricator. Our strength lies in the knowhow available to us. We are constantly in search of the optimum technology for a project, by effectively combining our sub products in a workable solution. Total Plant Solutions are solutions whereby we deliver complete installations, based on our in-house technology and our in-house project execution organisation. Frames fully understands the art of integrating technologies we ourselves have

developed, and on that basis offering our clients a fully Integrated Solution.” FPSO Petrojarl

At the end of 2014, Frames started upgrading work on Teekay Petrojarl’s FPSO ‘Petrojarl I’. Built in 1986, this FPSO has been active in the North Sea ever since. Its redeployment will be in the Atlanta field in Brazil. Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam has been awarded the FPSO conversion contract for the upgrade, and has formed a partnership with Frames for the design and fabrication of the new topside skids. By awarding this contract, Teekay has demonstrated its confidence in the combination of Damen’s ship conversion capacities and Frames’ knowledge of oil and gas treatment systems. The ‘Petrojarl I’ will be customised according to the specifications necessary for operating in the Atlanta field. The topside will be partly fitted with new process equipment while part of the existing equipment will be refurbished.

Designed to deliver modules and equipment for large projects BigRoll Shipping in Amsterdam has announced that COSCO Dalian Shipyard has been contracted to build two more MC Class Module Carriers, bringing the total number of vessels under construction to four. The first two vessels ‘BigRoll Barentsz’ and ‘BigRoll Bering’ were ordered in 2013 and are scheduled for delivery late 2015 and early 2016.

Visual of the MC Class Module Carriers.

The two additional vessels will be named ‘BigRoll Baffin’ and ‘BigRoll Beaufort’. They are due for delivery mid 2016 and early 2017 respectively. All BigRoll vessels are named in honour of famous Arctic explorers, which was inspired by the ships’ suitability for shipping to Arctic areas. MC Class

The MC Class is BigRoll’s newly

designed Module Carrier vessel. It is designed with particular focus on a high ballast capacity, low fuel consumption, high service speed and excellent sea keeping behavior – which in turn provides lower acceleration forces on the cargo. The innovative hull design coupled to the propulsion configuration ensures safe, reliable and fast transits.

The Dutch-flag MC Class vessels are specifically designed to deliver modules and equipment for large projects and are highly suited to travel to remote areas such as the Arctic regions as well as directly offshore. They have Finnish Swedish 1A Ice classification, and are designed and fully prepared for a DP2 notation.
