Dutch supply industry belongs in top 5!

As Managing Director of IRO - The Association of Dutch Suppliers in the Oil and Gas Industry, I am proud to present you the latest edition of Offshore Holland!

The Dutch oil and gas supply industry belongs in the top 5 of the world.

The four other countries being the USA, UK, Norway and France. This position is due to the facts that the Netherlands is an important onshore and offshore gas producer; it has a long maritime history; the Netherlands has had continuous struggle against the sea and that the Netherlands is the home base of Shell. But the position of the Netherlands as a logistic hub also plays an important role offering an excellent infrastructure for the transport of goods to destinations all over the world.

There are about 440 companies in the Netherlands supplying goods and services for oil and gas exploration.

These companies employ about 50,000 people in the design and maintenance of infrastructure, construction and manufacturing, engineering, research and development and the supply of materials and equipment. The turnover of the Dutch oil and gas supply industry is about €17.2 billion, and activities cover the whole vertical production chain from consultancy, engineering, fabrication and a whole range of services.

However, the Dutch oil and gas supply industry especially excels in gas and offshore technology. With regard to offshore the Dutch supply industry excels in the design and construction of advanced drilling rigs, drilling vessels, FPSO’s, jack-up barges, diving support vessels, crane vessels and other mobile offshore units, and the introduction of new products and services. In all this work, quality and innovation continues to be the key principles.

Though the Dutch North Sea is an important market the Dutch supply industry export their products and services to onshore and offshore upstream oil and gas projects all over the world, such as the Gulf Of Mexico, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Russia, Kazakhstan, West Africa, Asia, the arctic, to name a few.

The Dutch supply industry is used to work in ‘far away’ countries with challenging political and social circumstances, where there is no infrastructure, and a great variation in climate and technical challenges.

Though the Netherlands itself is situated in a mild climate zone, Dutch companies have, for instance, developed technology for the Arctic,

the new frontier for oil and gas exploration. Besides the Arctic, the Dutch oil and gas supply industry is active in other areas such as installation of offshore wind energy projects, decommissioning and deep water operations.

Despite all the uncertainties we are dealing with at the moment, the energy needs will keep growing and we have strong confidence in the long term. The Dutch come up with cost effective solutions and seize the opportunity to cooperate, and continue demonstrating their innovative skills and expertise to the world.

Malikai project in Malaysia

World’s highest jack-up and skidding operation ALE was also awarded with the weighing of the Topside, skidding of the Topside, jacking- up of the Topside, skidding at height of the Topside over the Hull and mating of Topside and Hull.

ALE started to mobilize the equipment at the beginning of April and started setting up the equipment needed for the Superlift (including its furtherdeveloped computer-controlled skidding system, ALE Mastsystem, Mega Jack system, weighing cells, strand jacks) in May, ready to execute the Superlift in July.

The Topside weighed in at 13,795t and was skidded 85m onto ALE’s Mega Jack system. The Mega Jack jacked-up the Topside to a height of 40 metres - the world’s highest ever jack-up at this scale. When jacked-up the system recorded a total jacking weight of 17,263 ton. The Topside was then

The global heavylift specialists were awarded the contracts for the Malikai Project on behalf of TMJV. ALE was given the scope of weighing and transporting four unit Hull blocks, Living Quarters and mega beams for the ‘Superlift’ activities. In addition,

skidded 90 metres at 38 metres elevation, until it was above the Hull, where ALE mated the Topside with the Hull.

ALE was also contracted to remove all equipment using ALE’s 900 ton strand jacks (pre-installed onto the Main deck of the Topside), skidding equipment and SPMTs. ALE’s Project Manager Edwin Blösser, from ALE’s Netherlands branch who coordinated the Superlift activities, commented: “It is fantastic to be part of a world first. At ALE we are always willing to push the boundaries in order to offer a bespoke solution for the client. In order to achieve such an operation, our engineers and crew have worked hard to carry out the necessary studies and safety checks.

This Superlift would not have been possible without a great crew and the Mega Jack System. With its capacity to easily lift the Topside to the desired height, the Mega Jack enabled the client to work on both the Topside and the Hull on ground level, therefore optimizing the logistics needed for such a build. As the both the Mega Jack and skidding systems are operated remotely via a control room and are equipped with a computerized controls, which have numerous safety systems implemented, these provided a safe way of working and protected both workers and the client’s equipment being lifted. Because the equipment is easy to mobilize and handle, ALE was able to install within the deadline set by the client and despite the challenges ALE faced on-site, the Superlift was completed without any delay to the project.”

The final stage of the project will involve the load-out of the Tension Leg Platform (TLP), which is expected to take place later in 2015.

Offshore Holland spoke with Wilco Schuurs, sales manager of Nord-Lock Benelux B.V. Although Wilco is operating out of Holland, the Western Europe regional office of the company is located in Andover, United Kingdom.

Schuurs: “Our extensive experience and track record with providing quality products, has made us experts in the field of bolting. We focus 100% on bolting and providing an education about safe bolting is part of the mission of our company. Our customers are many and varied, and each has its own unique applications and challenges. Through close cooperation and with full attention to the demands of our customers, we are able to design solutions that suit their individual needs. For us, the importance of bolting is pretty obvious, to our customers I always say, the more critical the application, the more time should be spent on it.”

Innovation

From wedge-locking solutions to Superbolt multi-jackbolt tensioners, the Nord-Lock Group has developed innovative technologies that are able to meet the many critical bolting applications of the oil, gas, petrochemical and wind renewable industries. “It is our ability to design customer specific solutions that enables us to meet the toughest challenges,” Wilco Schuurs explains.

“We believe that the foundation of development lies in cooperation and partnership. And in addition to our bolt securing solutions, we offer our

expertise and testing facilities.

By working together, we can help our clients to lower their costs, reach higher profitability, and reduce downtime. Moreover we have invested heavily in the Superbolt manufacturing facilities allowing quick turnaround of standard and special multi-jackbolt tensioners and other related bolting products.”

Safe and simple

The main feature of the Nord-Lock products is that they maintain preload with tension instead of friction, and will prevent any fastened/bolted joints from unintentional loosening.

No special tools are required for installation or removal.

The Nord-Lock wedge-locking products are recognized around the world for their ability to secure bolted joints exposed to severe vibration and dynamic loads. The system cannot loosen unintentionally as it creates a wedge underneath the bolt head/nut.

The revolutionary Superbolt tensioners offer simple, safe, and cost effective tightening of large size bolts. Because of the huge mechanical advantage of Superbolt products bolted joints can be tightened with high accuracy, and without heavy tooling or specialist skills. Ordinary torque wrenches or pneumatic wrenches are the only tools

required, meaning increased safety for the workers. All product types in the wide range of multi-jackbolt tensioners (MJT) have been tested and approved by several certification institutes such as Det Norske Veritas, Germanischer Lloyd and Lloyd’s Register. MJTs ensure a profitable life cycle cost by improving the bolt design for OEM manufacturers, ensuring reliable operation and by facilitating maintenance procedures.

What is Superbolt?

Superbolt tensioners are designed as direct replacements for conventional nuts and bolts. These devices can be threaded onto a new or existing bolt, stud, threaded rod or shaft. The main thread serves to position the tensioner on the bolt or stud against the hardened washer and the load bearing surface. Once it is positioned, actual tensioning of the bolt or stud is accomplished with simple hand tools by torquing the jackbolts which encircle the main thread.

The jackbolts transfer the preload evenly into the main thread and, consequently, onto the joint. The main thread is tightened in pure tension.

Schuurs: “Our engineers can help clients to determine dimensions and load conditions of their bolted joints.

We can evaluate their current tightening method and calculate bolt preloads necessary for reliability and durability. OEMs all over the world specify the Nord-Lock MJTs in their design to improve the performance of f.e. their platforms, mobile land rigs, cranes, BOPs, drilling equipment, mud pumps, top drives, derricks, ROVs, and flame towers.”

Wedge-locking

Nord-Lock wedge-locking products are recognized around the world for their ability to secure bolted joints exposed to severe vibration and dynamic loads. The system cannot loosen unintentionally as it creates a wedge underneath the bolt head/nut.

An ideal solution for bolted joints where failure is not an option.

The wedge-locking products utilize tension to secure bolted joints in demanding industries exposed to vibration and dynamic loads.

The system comprises a pair of washers that creates a wedge-effect and prevents the bolt from rotating loose. Achieve and maintain a high and accurate clamp load with quick and easy installation and removal.

A reliable and elegant solution.

In addition to Nord-Lock wedge lock washers, the range also includes wheel nuts, combi bolts and custom solutions.

Fortunately, you see more and more that engineers get to realize that a good bolt construction actually increases profitability. We have a range of pre-engineered products that are tested and proven but if needed we produce customer specials by generating a complete and detailed view of the design of bolted connections and securing methods.

As said before, it is our philosophy to be close to our customers, to speak their language and to help them achieve secure and effective bolted joints. Additionally, we help our customers to ensure successful operations over time with our onsite support and remote product training.”

Nord-Lock can find the solution to any bolting problem. With a strong focus on secure and reliable joints since 1982, the company have a history of thousands of special designs to prove its capabilites. Schuurs: “We are highly adaptable to space constraints and environmental conditions that no other bolting systems can match. Our target groups do not always realize how important our products are and how important it is to lean on our expereince from the beginning of a new development.

A successful sample of being involved in a project at an early stage is the bolting solution developed by Nord-Lock for the F3-FA project executed by the Heerema Fabrication Group (HFG). What seemed like an impossible task became reality thanks to Nord-Lock’s Superbolts and a smart tensioning system. The project started already in 2009 when HFG was originally commissioned to build a SIP (self installing platform), strong and stable enough to withstand the elements in the middle of the North Sea.

A SIP is an offshore platform that can be insatlled without the need of a crane vessel and heavy pile-driving equipment. Similar SIPs had been used before, however only for smaller platforms in shallower, calmer seas.

This installation, however, needed to support a much heavier platform, in much harsher conditions. On top of all that, it also needed the ability to be dismantled and relocated. To solve this seemingly impossible task HFG decided to use the simplest and oldest fastener in human engineering history – bolts. Supplied by Nord-Lock, the bolts are 5,5 metres long, 24 cm in diameter and weigh over 2,000 kg.

Even the nut-style Superbolt tensioners used weigh over 350 kg. By using these in total 16 Superbolt assemblies (four on each leg) HFG achieved a world first. “The Superbolt assemblies we supplied offer the same security as welding, except they are faster and easier to install,” tells sales manager Wilco Schuurs. “We used a special sealed design, which protected the jackbolts in rough conditions. Each of the 36 jackbolts per Superbolt tensioner is individually sealed to protect it from the corrosion and conserve the lubricant. Thus, the jackbolt can be loosend without any damage and the entire connection can be re-used.”

Safeway promises safety, cost efficiency and workability improvements

New motion compensated gangway system Earlier this year the Dordrecht-based Van Aalst Group introduced a new motion compensated gangway system under the brand name Safeway. Thanks to several remarkable innovations, the Safeway gangway bridge makes it possible for vessels to provide access to a broad range of offshore constructions, varying from small unmanned installations in the Southern North Sea to large offshore production units in the Northern North Sea. Safeway claims workability in up to 3.5 metre wave heights.

The first Safeway unit is currently under construction in Holland under Bureau Veritas class. The workability of gangway systems has been gradually developing over the past decades.

Van Aalst’s planned introduction adds roll compensation, vertical height adjustment and a weight balanced boom construction to the gangway types now dominating the market.

These innovations are likely to increase the uptime of staff and equipment on any offshore installation. The added ‘fourth motion actuator’ compensates for ‘rolling’, the vessel’s main motion. Tests and calculations show that Safeway should offer workability with offshore support vessels working at wave heights of up to 3,5 meters.

Safety

The enhanced performance of the new gangway system will dramatically improve the safety level for offshore workers. Van Aalst announces real redundancy by doubling all hydraulic cylinders. The possibility of a 10-meter vertical height adjustment enables the access arm to maintain a nearly horizontal position under most circumstances. This rules out unsafe uphill or downhill walking, further enhancing safety.

Handling

The new Safeway system is designed for easy handling and operating, reducing operational costs.

The counterweight balanced boom construction has been an important feature in creating the desired simplicity.

30 years active as network organisation

Transition to sustainable energy port delivers additional boost Amsterdam IJmuiden Offshore Port (AYOP) is a network organisation with 64 members (in August 2015), two sea ports and local authorities both focusing on offshore energy. Established in 1985, AYOP has its roots in and around the North Sea Canal area, extending from IJmuiden to Amsterdam. Ron Davio became chairman at the start of 2011, having previously been active for years as a business member and subsequently as a board member. Offshore Holland spoke to him about the present and the future.

What is the importance of AYOP’s 30th anniversary?

“It is fabulous that AYOP has been around for so long, and that we all continue to be so enthusiastic.

A network organisation only has any real relevance if it has enthusiastic members – and AYOP certainly has those. A few years ago there were just twenty of us, and now already 64.”

What is it like to be chairman of AYOP? “Particularly interesting. For many years I was director of a business involved in the offshore sector and in those years my biggest concern was generating sufficient work. In my role as AYOP chairman, I have other concerns. I now have the opportunity to think about ideas and where we want to end up, in the future.”

So what does that future have to offer?

“Alongside oil and gas, a great deal of wind. Wind energy will help strengthen the North Sea Canal region even further. In the same way that thirty

years ago we were solid players focusing exclusively on oil and gas.

The reality is, however, that operators active in the Dutch sector of the North Sea are unfortunately not making sufficient use of the facilities on offer at the seaport in IJmuiden, for a number of different economic reasons.

Fortunately, commercial activities have returned over the past few years, in a period when the offshore wind energy sector has also emerged as a new user of the port. In response, we at AYOP immediately shifted our focus, and with considerable success.

And now, IJmuiden is playing a key role in the construction of windfarms off the Dutch coast. It is a good feeling to be able to make a contribution to that development.”

Velsen also recently decided to substantially increase its financial contribution to AYOP because we can help them actually achieve the ambitions of the municipal authorities.

On the other hand, we ourselves often take the initiative in launching our own projects. Take for example the Averijhaven in IJmuiden, which we intend to convert into an energy port.

A report on the subject was recently published, and I am delighted to see that the plan is receiving huge support, not only from businesses but also from within various levels of government. The transition to a sustainable energy port will deliver a huge boost for the offshore sector, on this side of the sea locks.”

What are key spearheads for AYOP?

How important is AYOP for the region?

“When it comes to offshore energy, the province and municipal authorities and their maritime operators in the port view us as a serious party. We are involved in a whole variety of plans, for oil and gas and wind energy. Our opinion matters. The Municipality of

platforms and vessels. We have sufficient space here for jack-ups and installation vessels for maintenance work, in addition to which the businesses affiliated to AYOP can offer years of experience in the provision of services to the oil and gas industry.”

What is the one-stop shopping concept?

“The term one-stop shopping refers to the unique capabilities of the region.

The concept has two facets: the broad and complete range of specialist suppliers and, with the addition of logistics, the ability to make optimum use of the available infrastructure and space. Within a radius of 25 kilometres, everything is on hand for installation and maintenance work. By offering a cost-effective system, it is possible to substantially reduce logistic costs.

The concept is an example of a successful collaborative venture, and is proof that the region is home to considerable ambition and implementation capacity. The concept itself is constantly in a state of flux, enabling us as AYOP to continue to think bigger and broader. We are looking to the future, beyond the current horizon. An individual business does not have the time or space to consider the long-term view, but we at AYOP do.”

What developments are taking place in the oil and gas sector in the region?

“We are certainly not resting on our laurels in that area. We are constantly looking for ways to better serve the sector. One example is the demand from oil and gas operators for stock control and management. This emerged from our inventory among oil and gas operators, which revealed a need that our members intend to meet.

We also wish to improve our relevance for drilling support companies.

Ron Davio became AYOP chairman at the start of 2011.

A number of well-known companies in this field have already decided to set up shop in our region because of our ability to respond flexibly.

Their activities are not disrupted by the regular activities of operators, and that is an aspect we need to emphasise even more. The same applies to the fact that we have sufficient space to carry out maintenance and modifications on offshore installation platforms and vessels. One excellent example is the open-sea access at the IJmondhaven. And if our plans for the energy port are implemented, we will also have space there to accept drilling platforms, either to carry out maintenance or to dismantle outdated platforms. In other words, IJmuiden and Amsterdam still have plenty to offer the oil and gas industry.”

Successful record lift!

Early in August the crane vessel Oleg Strashnov successfully installed the Process Unit (PU) topside for operator GDF Suez E&P UK, and partners Centrica Energy and Bayerngas.

The Oleg Strashnov set a new lift record for Seaway Heavy Lifting with the safe installation of the PU topside with a hook load of 4700 Mt. The PU topside is part of the Cygnus field which consists of four platforms: Alpha Wellhead platform, Process Unit platform, Quarters Unit platform and the Bravo Wellhead platform.

The Cygnus Field is located in the southern part of the North Sea.

Last year our crane vessel Stanislav Yudin installed the Alpha Wellhead platform, the Process Unit jacket, Quarters Unit jacket and subsea structures. This year the campaign continues with the installation of the Bravo Wellhead platform, Process Unit topside and compression module, Quarters Unit topside-, and connecting bridges.

Containerised fan room developed by Heinen & Hopman

Innovative custom designed fan rooms Jan Dirk Koelewijn, Project Manager at Heinen & Hopman, recognises that in the offshore industry time and innovation is key and looks in detail at the latest HVAC fan room solution.

As time is always of the essence in the offshore industry and vessel owners make it a priority to keep the necessary yard visits as short as possible, suppliers must ensure their products do not add to vessel owners’ time constraints.

To help save time spent on tasks, Heinen & Hopman has developed a containerised fan room that can be completely pre-fabricated and tested before delivery to the vessel. Due to the design, installation time onboard can be shortened tremendously.

A modified cargo or offshore certified container is used as the base for the fan room. The container size may vary from 10ft up to 40ft in high cube execution. The choice depends on the space needed to fit all required equipment and is influenced by the available space on-board.

Design

For the engineering and design of the containerised fan room, a specialised team of HVAC engineers with vast experience in the oil & gas industry is deployed. In close co-operation with the customer a 100% customised design can be created to suit all necessary requirements.

The design process also allows for the opportunity for engineers to visit the vessel for an on- board survey. The ultimate goal is to produce a design that is completely ‘plug & play’.

Following onboard installation, the fan room just needs to be hooked up to the duct systems and electrical power system.

The design of the containerised fan room includes air handling units with conditioned airflows up to 40000m3/ hr. Cooling capacities are available up to 800kW and are available in chilled water or direct expansion execution.

Heating is normally executed with electrical heaters. Energy saving applications such as heat pump and heat recovery wheels can easily be integrated into the original design.

The first pre-fabricated 40ft high cube fan room has already been delivered to Paragon Offshore and installed on the B391 jack-up drilling rig. This containerised fan room was placed on top of the accommodation and replaced the old fan rooms inside and was executed with two air handling units, two air-cooled chiller units and one dual pump skid. All ducting, chilled water piping, cables and control for a complete working system are integrated within the container.

Features include heat recovery wheels, 100% redundant cooling capacity and dual supply fans. The container for this project was customised to fit onboard restrictions and executed with a weather-tight door and service access hatch in the side of the container.

Repeat customers visit Keppel Verolme in Rotterdam

Mammoth dry-dock is key asset Jack up rigs dominated the skyline of the Rotterdam based Keppel Verolme yard in the first half year of 2015.

of May 2015. Another unit simultaneously docked in the same dock was the FPSO Armada Intrepid (ex Schiehallion) which left in May and was replaced in the dock by the accommodation rig Seafox 2.

The Seafox 2 shared the same dry-dock 7 with Paragon 391 for its 5 yearly SPS and various other modifications in preparation of its next job.

A long-standing customer of Keppel Verolme, Seafox brought the vessel to the yard in the first week of April. It spent a period of time along the quay side for demobilising and starting of various preparatory works for the 16 day dry-docking.

With only time for a short stay in the yard, very strict planning was needed to ensure all different trades could maximise their efficiency.

Paragon B391

In Mid-March, Keppel Verolme’s regular client Paragon Offshore sent its 1981 built jack -up drilling rig Paragon B391- previously known as Noble Julie Robertson - to the Keppel Verolme yard for a life-time extension project.

Paragon had already made arrangements with a local contractor to renew a major part of the rig’s accommodation and Keppel Verolme was contracted to dry-dock the rig and carry out a whole range of renewals, maintenance and survey

works in order to prepare the rig for another ten years of service in the North Sea. A major part of the work was the cleaning and painting of the rig’s legs, including renewal of various steel bracings in the legs.

In addition, the complete hull was blasted and the coating renewed and in a number of ballast tanks, steel renewals were deemed necessary due to wear and tear after more than 30 years of service.

The work included structural and piping repairs and painting of the hull, accommodation and helideck.

Seafox 2 was then undocked and stayed at the yard for further completion work, including some of its own preparation jobs for the next contract.

Other recent offshore projects included the maintenance of two jack-up units owned by Jack-Up Barge, an upgrade of the drilling rig Hercules Triumph for Hercules Offshore and the mobilisation of a new-build drilling rig, Ensco 122.

This jack up rig, owned by Ensco and built by Keppel FELS in Singapore, arrived in the Rotterdam yard in March and stayed a couple of weeks.

Arrival of the Stena Don.

New order

Keppel Verolme secured the repair and upgrade of Stena Don, a harsh environment semisubmersible for Stena Drilling Ltd. Part of the yard’s work scope for this project is a midlife upgrade for the fourteen year old vessel, which includes maintenance and renewal of the drilling equipment and accommodation. The rig will undergo its regular Special Periodic Survey (SPS) as well as maintenance works, thruster overhauls and a painting program.

The vessel arrived at the yard on August 2, 2015, after the removal of its six thrusters at the deep water location in the Port of Rotterdam.

New legislation calls for the Vector Maintenance Management approach

In the light of the tragic Deepwater Horizon, Vector Maintenance Management in Den Helder has seen the European Union place offshore safety high on the agenda, resulting in EU Directive 2013.

Operators will need to make the necessary preparations. “We have developed a series of tools to help,” explain board members Joost de Boer, Robert Krauweel and René Pabst.

The aim of the Directive is to reduce the risk of severe accidents and environmental damage during the entire lifecycle from exploration through to production. The elaboration of the Directive takes the form of an unequivocal EU-wide legal framework based on worldwide best practices. As from 19 July 2015, the Directive will acquire legal effect, and will be put into national legislation by every Member State. The industry will have to make adjustments to planned operations starting in July 2016, and to existing operations starting in July 2018. “If you also take account of the huge downturn in income in the oil and gas sector, the inevitable conclusion is that things will have to change,” according to the various board members of VectorMM. Strategy

The government is calling for changes.

How will the operators present the details of their processes? VectorMM is not exactly in favour of eradicating inspectors, but the company does propose that the role of the inspectors as on-board supervisors should be reduced. They should simply validate the methods and findings, on the basis of reports drawn up by the maintenance or internal inspection service, along the lines of: ‘can I take a look at that document, followed by perhaps a limited on-site inspection.’

But how does an operator draw up management reports that are sufficiently transparent? How do they make sure their staff know what procedures and methods to employ?

VectorMM often sees workers knowing everything there is to know about specific maintenance tasks, but nothing about the process that precedes or follows their activity.

The same applies for such aspects as material, logistics and job planning.

By improving interaction between different disciplines, huge savings are often achieved, as well as improving process efficiency at the same time. Operators are used to manage Safety/Environmental Critical Elements on a daily basis in order to (safely) operate a petrochemical installation. The new Directive, however, requires mainly a change in configuration of the management system in order to improve the demonstrability of the integrity of Safety/Environmental Critical Elements. Emphasis is placed on priority management and reports which demonstrate alignment with performance standards. For effectively managing petrochemical installations safeguarding the integrity of SCE/ ECE’s is equally important to ensuring production availability.

Both objectives require a transparent and demonstrable business process which enables decision making.

Therefor VectorMM’s focus lies in properly developed maintenanceand inspection strategies combined with a sound configuration of the Computerised Management Systems and organisational aspects. With regard to strategy development VectorMM is able to calculate the optimum interval against the lowest possible cost whereby both Safety as well as production availability targets are met. By maintenance and inspection, asset-functioning is managed. SCE and ECE do not necessary imply increased workload.

A demonstrable business process shows that maintenance and inspection strategies will show synergy once implemented as such in your CMMS. And there is almost always a knock-on improvement in the level of safety and quality; in other words, a win-win situation all-round.

Improvement

The core business of VectorMM is producing a blueprint for the process in the form of a Maintenance, Inspection, Asset Integrity, Policy & Strategy document and the CMMS implementation thereof. The company’s range of products have complemented Maintenance-, Inspection- and asset integrity- methods with structuring the management system, all harmonised to match the organisation: an integrated approach.

An analysis of existing processes, identification of bottlenecks or aspects that increase costs, elaboration of improvements and subsequent description of new processes and implementation in a management system are all complex processes.

VectorMM has developed a method that can be used for a range of different operators. The management: “Via an in-depth analysis of maintenance data from our clients, we calculate optimum strategies and maintenance frequencies. Naturally, maximum safety, reliability and availability at the lowest possible cost are the central points of focus.

This approach enables us to offer the ideal concept for every client, on the basis of the perfect balance between

economic and statutory targets.

Of course, any such project demands an investment by the client. But to date, the Return On Investment (ROI) point has always been achieved, within the course of the project.

The general idea is to achieve more with the same (or less!) effort.

A method to improve further is to realise that you have to teach the employees of the various companies to make use of these new strategies and procedures.”

Return on Education

As a consequence, VectorMM has developed training programmes to teach the staff of the various operators to implement the entire maintenance process in line with the newly developed rules.

“We have, for example, an off the shelf training for Reliability Availability and Maintainability (RAM). The feedback received from experienced engineers after having followed this course is that this is a training all their colleagues should follow as it helps to make deliberate decisions for projects and modifications. Within VectorMM we believe that it is not about teaching operators to rethink their work, it is all about offering them the ideal management method and forms of cooperation.

We create a clear overall view, and prevent individual employees focusing just on their own specialisation, or developing tunnel vision. As a result, the overall structure and methods are supported by the entire organisation and all members of staff. In other words, ROI from ROE: Return on Education!”

Parties visualise close cooperation with video

Den Helder: important logistical offshore port Den Helder Airport and Port of Den Helder are promoting their close cooperation in a video on Den Helder as the logistic ‘offshore city’ of the Netherlands. The video, which includes the most important elements of the logistic offshore activities (oil, gas and wind) in the North Holland province, will be used in a joint profile at international trade fairs.

“We can use this video to emphasise and visualise the importance of our cooperation nationally and internationally. It will help us to profile Den Helder within the offshore industry as the most important logistical offshore port of the southern North Sea, including the largest offshore helicopter airport of the Netherlands,” the Director of Den Helder Airport, Conny van den Hoff, explains.

The video is the result of the active cooperation between Port of Den Helder and Den Helder Airport.

The two companies support each other´s activities to the extent possible and have close cooperation with the business community, knowledge institutions and training institutes in the province of North Holland.

Largest order in DCN’s history

Gas pipeline repair in the Java Sea

At the end of last year, DCN International Diving and Marine Contractors based in Bergen op Zoom, the Netherlands, won the largest EPIC contract in the company’s history. The Indonesian state-owned business PGN (Perushaan Gas Negara), specialising in the transport and distribution of gas, awarded the order to the Dutch diving company established in 1957 together with its Indonesian partner SGI, to seal a tear in a four year-old gas pipeline, located on the bottom of the Java Sea. The gas from the pipeline in question is transported to the capital city Jakarta, also home to the government of the Republic of Indonesia. PGN manages more than 5,900 kilometres of transport pipeline, and supplies some 84 million customers with gas.

The tear is located on a weld seam and was first discovered in May 2013. During the course of that same month, PGN had a temporary repair carried out using a so-called Plidco clamp. Last year, following

extensive research, PGN decided to carry out a permanent repair to the 32-inch pipeline, located at a depth of approx. 27 metres.

The repair will be carried out by DCN specialists in the fourth quarter

of 2015, while the pipeline remains ‘live’ (fully pressurised).

In other words, throughout the hyperbaric welding work, the gas will continue to be pumped along the pipeline.

At Bergen op Zoom,

Worldwide, there are few companies capable of carrying out such an extremely critical welding operation under increased pressure. “The fact that DCN was awarded this order is above all thanks to the references we were able to hand over, and the fact that we have our own fully-equipped hyperbaric centre here in Bergen op Zoom, where we can simulate test conditions,” explained co-director Wim Vriens. “Here we can carry out ‘dry runs’ with the divers who will be responsible for the actual welding work under pressure in the Java Sea, and provide them with the necessary training and preparation for the extremely difficult circumstances in which they will be required to operate.

All the tests in our centre will be carried out under the supervision of representatives of the client PGN, and the classification bureau DNV.” To allow the welding work to be carried out under water but in dry conditions, DCN will deploy a habitat that will create a safe and protected working environment for the divers.

The completely separated welding chamber is suitable for welding and testing with a working pressure of up to 200 metre and a testing pressure of up to 280 metre.

facility for diver training but also allows tests to be carried out on large sections of pipes up to a maximum diameter of 48 inches, or on valves that have to be installed on a jacket.

The tank has an operating pressure of 200 metres, and a testing pressure of 280 metres. In a completely separate welding chamber, between two and three divers can simultaneously carry out welding work. Depending on the purpose for which the test area is used, the required atmosphere can be created. The complete facility at the DCN hyperbaric centre includes a separate control container and a saturation chamber under overpressure, with living accommodation including shower and laundry facilities.

Wim Vriens explained: “Fifteen divers will be specially trained for the PGN project here at DCN in Bergen op Zoom, of whom ten prequalified divers will eventually be deployed. Of this team, nine divers will be spending approximately one month in saturation, in order to carry out the repair according to the welding method we propose.

In total, a team of approximately 100 DCN staff will be deployed on location in the Java Sea, not including the crew of the Normand Baltic, the DP2 diving vessel we have chartered for the project, equipped with a 100-tonne crane, moonpool and helicopter deck.”

Giant Gina Krog platform

Largest launch jacket built by HFG sets sail With the sail away on Friday 19 June 2015 Gina Krog, the largest launch jacket ever built by Vlissingen yard of Heerema Fabrication Group (HFG), is ready for installation. The over 17,000 ton jacket for client Statoil & Partners started its journey for final destination, the Gina Krog field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Late June 2015, the jacket was launched on the field in the Norwegian part of the North Sea.

After a successful FEED study of HFG in-house engineering, Heerema Vlissingen was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract of the Gina Krog launch jacket and pre-drilling wellhead module in February 2013.

Throughout the various FEED phases, incorporating the design development of the topside, HFG developed a mature launch jacket concept providing a firm basis for the EPC contract.

Within 17 months after construction the record breaking launch jacket was skidded onto the barge late March 2015 and has now set sail for installation at the Gina Krog field in the central part of the North Sea. The Gina Krog launch jacket weighs over 17,000 tons, has a footprint of 60x50 meters and at the top 40x30 meters.

The height of the jacket is 142 metres.

The pre-drilling wellhead module, which sails out after jacket installation, makes it possible to drill wells before the topside is in place and weighs 265 tons.

“The completion of this giant Gina Krog jacket and pre-drilling wellhead module highlights an important milestone at HFG Vlissingen yard,” says Koos-Jan van Brouwershaven, CEO Heerema Fabrication Group.

“For this largest launch jacket ever built by HFG, we engineered and constructed a state of the art new flow measuring system which optimises the upending capabilities of the jacket during installation. Due to its heavy weight we built skid beams on the Vlissingen yard, especially for this project, which enabled us to execute

the load-out of the Gina Krog jacket from our yard onto the barge safe and with high quality. Successful delivery of this heavily built and immense launch jacket is the result of great teamwork and commitment to high performance and safety of Statoil & Partners as well as HFG. We have completed this project safely without any Last Time Incidents as a consequence of our efforts to achieve a safe and incident free working environment.”

The Gina Krog field development is a gas, condensate and oil field, located in the central part of the North Sea, about 30 kilometres northwest of the Sleipner field. The Gina Krog field will be developed with a fixed platform in a water depth of 116 metres and will be tied into the Sleipner facilities for gas export with oil being transported by tankers.

‘Collaboration makes us much stronger’ The IJmondhaven.

The IJPOS business cluster, established in 2013, can offer a whole raft of offshore, maritime and fishery disciplines and quality, for every square kilometre. IJPOS is an acronym for IJmuiden Port Services, an organisation which has members with whom you can conduct business simply in a straightforward, direct manner. In other words, typical IJmuiden, exactly as you find it; no bells, no whistles, just clean lines and clear thinking. The aim is to collectively win major offshore and maritime projects with a single main contractor, to bring on board the specialist services and to ensure that customers receive the assistance they need at a level of quality that matches their requirements, and with all suitable haste, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Offshore Holland spoke to the recently appointed chairman of IJPOS Henk Wessel about pride, shared ideas, the one-stop shop formula and the challenges facing this newly-established cluster.

For years, the port of IJmuiden has undersold itself as a service port – a shortcoming that can be attributed to both the municipal and port authorities, and the local businesses.

“In that respect, we as business owners are ready to accept responsibility,” suggested Wessel, in all honesty.

One of the first successes achieved by the combined businesses in the IJmuiden port area (fishery and service companies) was the cancellation of the proposed new port regulations, a draft of which had already been completed.

These regulations had suggested that in order to protect the environment, a number of activities could no longer be undertaken in the port of IJmuiden.

Jack-ups, work platforms or other offshore structures would only be permitted to remain in port for three days to carry out maintenance, repairs or to implement modifications.

After that time, an alternative mooring would have to be sought. Fortunately, a number of leading businesses took action aimed at bringing an end to the new regulations. It was during one of those meetings that the term ‘service port’ was first used. Because that is what IJmuiden has become today; a service port!

Brain position

“One thing that clearly emerged at the time was the lack of pride among local businesses,” added Wessel. “There was no single-mindedness. We all knew one another, but no-one sought inspiration from others. It was a matter of every man for himself. On the other hand, IJmuiden is a unique port, ideally suited for carrying out major repair and modification projects.

Nevertheless, there was a lack of understanding among the majority of businesses that the only way of establishing a solid position was to join forces, and that a combined

approach was the fundamental basis for a huge economic boost.”

With that in mind some offshore and maritime related entrepreneurs summoned all of their fellow entrepreneurs and presented their vision. The meeting turned out to be a real eye-opener. The decision was taken to move forward side by side, shoulder to shoulder, in order to continue to play a meaningful role for the international oil and gas industry and for the builders of offshore wind farms. Within a short time, IJPOS was formally established.

“The aim for the immediate future is for more ships, dredging units, jack-ups, work platforms and offshore service vessels to visit the port of IJmuiden for maintenance and modification work. More ships in the harbour means more employment opportunities, and that is our overall objective. IJmuiden is a unique seaport, where now local businesses have joined forces in a cluster to offer optimum customer service in terms of maintenance, repair

and modification work.

To communicate that fact, IJPOS above all needs to present itself to the international offshore community.

But also closer to home we need to present ourselves to major parties.

In September, for example, we will organise a symposium on the construction of the new locks at IJmuiden, where all companies can meet and talk to the general contractor. Together we must establish a situation that instinctively causes target groups to select IJmuiden, for every repair, maintenance or modification project. Steel cutting ceremony at Huisman facility in China

Heerema’s 10,000mt Tub Mounted Cranes On Wednesday 1 July 2015 Huisman, the worldwide specialist in lifting, drilling and subsea solutions, held a steel cutting ceremony together with Heerema for the two Heerema 10,000mt Tub Mounted Cranes at their facility in China. These world’s largest cranes will be installed onboard Heerema’s new semi-submersible crane vessel. The steel cutting event signifies a major milestone for the project to proceed to its construction phase to meet the delivery schedule by the end of 2018.

make use of either bogies or large wheels for their slew system, the Huisman cranes will make use of large bearings of own design which are manufactured in-house. One of the largest benefits of a bearing is that this allows for a substantial weight saving of the crane. Especially on semisubmersibles this is an important feature. The slew bearings of these cranes will have a diameter of 30 metres. The two cranes will each be able to lift 10,000mt at 48 metres radius in offshore conditions.

Bossy is something that a young, sensitive woman specifically does not want to be. It could have a negative influence on her professional development into a managerial position, while for most successful women, the most important driving force is the wish to achieve continuous personal improvement.

Any such development calls for a proactive character, combined with good and clear communication skills and a clear focus on achieving results. Fleur Loef, the 34 year-old Managing Director of Auxilium Offshore, has all those characteristics in abundance, and views it as her ultimate challenge to ensure a position of value for collective awareness within the male culture of the offshore industry.

This can best be achieved by inspiring one another, on a basis of mutual trust.

It may sound slightly philosophical, but the extremely impassioned Fleur Loef is well on the way to opening up the traditionally highly egocentric offshore world. Her goals will take some time and demand a huge amount of energy, but after eighteen months, she has discovered that meeting this challenge is becoming ever more enjoyable; and above all more exciting. Partly thanks to the types of assignment that Fleur and her team of experts have already been asked to undertake.

Turnaround

Having graduated from higher technical school, as she put it herself, Fleur Loef started in ‘dredging’ at the age of just 22. She quickly made the switch to the offshore industry, the allure of which proved irresistible to her, and on 1 January 2014 she took on the position of Managing Director at Auxilium Offshore, at that time still based in Capelle aan den IJssel. “I may still be young, but the enthusiasm with which I entered the management echelons of the offshore industry in 2014 has continued to grow over the past year,” revealed Fleur, when OV met to interview her at the offices of Auxilium in Zaltbommel, the Netherlands.

“Life at the start proved quite tough, for a young, female superintendent.

However, I learned from my mistakes, and despite a number of setbacks my outlook always remained unchanged.”

Fleur Loef has learned her profession while retaining her individuality. She has always maintained her willingness to complement others in her working environment, and has continued to express her appreciation for the work they do. “Right from the start, I have encouraged the ‘we’re all in it together’ approach, and attempted to project a positive attitude.” Focus on the environment and working conditions, respect for man and the environment, corporate social responsibility and inspired leadership are the basic principles for the management position currently occupied by Fleur Loef with total conviction at Auxilium.

This approach is indeed logical, since willingness to cooperate, creativity and innovation in combination with a clear sense of responsibility are in her opinion the keys to success. “Now I am in this position, there is evidence of a turnaround,” suggested Fleur, looking back at her initial experiences in the offshore sector. “There are moments when I notice that being a woman also has its advantages. People remember your face far more easily, but the fact remains that you still have to perform, and demonstrate your capabilities. The essential thing for me is to carry out my work, as correctly as possible. I have always had the will to finish any task I start, and of course I am able to rely on the support and enthusiastic dedication of our team.

I believe in the power of people, and that remains my source of inspiration.”

In the future, I see a huge variety of opportunities for Auxilium. My ultimate goal is to make a real difference in this competitive industry, based on innovations, backed up by a team of people who share a ground-breaking innovative attitude. More and more companies are starting to focus on their core business, and leave other tasks to independent specialists like Auxilium.

That development represents clear new possibilities and opportunities for us, but you have to be in a position to recognise them. Effectively, you need to be able to identify solutions, before the customer has even recognised the problem. You need to constantly be thinking on your customer’s behalf, and that means spending a great deal of time with your customers, and understanding their needs.

Communication, in other words.

And that is what makes my life so exciting; our customer base is incredibly broad including operators, contractors, consultants, ship builders, designers and engineers. We work alongside them all, and that is in essence the source of my addiction. For me as an entrepreneur, the constant need to stay on the ball is a fantastic feeling.” Day in day out, Fleur Loef feels she is involved in an imaginary top-class competition.

Doing business is after all no easy task.

If everything were easy, anyone could do it. In our case, client and contractor need to inspire one another. Interaction at that level is essential. Both parties need to work hard on establishing mutual trust, and that is a process that takes time. Fleur added: “I above all focus on the long term. At the same time, here at Auxilium, we must avoid presenting ourselves to the outside world as a business that automatically has all the answers. The key is a collective approach; listening to one another, and combining ideas. In other words, flexibility; for me, the old adage always applies; the customer is always right. On that basis, our task is to take away the customer’s concerns. That is the main driving force in all my activities. You need to take time for one another, and openly and honestly pay attention to one another’s needs.

Only then will you truly get to know your customers, as they get to know you. People who work for Auxilium need to demonstrate just those characteristics. I believe firmly in this strategy, but freely admit that in the specialist world in which we operate,

this specific model is itself fairly ground-breaking. It is just like a friendship. Learning to love one another takes time and effort. To be honest, our work approach is completely natural.

We at Auxilium are constantly working to convince ourselves that our customers are truly happy with the approach we follow. Because at the end of the day, that must always be the objective; assembling a clear scope of activities, and making sure that your performance meets your customer’s expectations, in open communication.

Out of respect for her clients, Fleur Loef refrained from naming any of her domestic or indeed international clients, but was willing to confirm that over the past twelve months, they have completed a number of appealing assignments. Some clients prefer Auxilium to operate anonymously within their project, and although Fleur understands this thinking, deep in her heart she favours a more open approach. Otherwise, how can she set to work opening up the market?

Auxilium was for example involved in the construction of a windfarm off the Dutch coast, a project in which a mechanical multipurpose cable trencher was deployed for the first time. Using this innovative trencher, the cable was laid in the seabed using high-pressure water jets. In other words, the sand was liquefied with a water jet, allowing the cable to be submerged due to its own weight. As Fleur Loef explained: “We were involved in the testing of this brand-new trencher; the complete operation at sea and the beach landings of the cable were supervised by a team of experts from Auxilium. The new method proved a real success. The entire cable was trenched without a single mechanical downtime. We are extremely grateful that our client offered us the opportunity to demonstrate our capabilities. In this case, we were able to

deliver both the capacity and the quality, in-house, to assist the client at just the right time, and we are delighted that they decided to make use of our services, and were willing to share their innovative technology with us.

This then is an example of the ‘new’ future of business practice; sharing ideas with one another. I fully realise that you cannot share the technical knowledge of every innovation with everyone, but instead of being secretive, go in search of a company with whom you can share. We here in the Netherlands are extremely innovative and that is why we occupy such a rock-solid position in particular in the international oil and gas industry.

We are surrounded in this country by bright and intelligent people, but in the overall scheme of things, as an individual, it is not possible to make a truly essential difference. It takes much more than one person, and innovative

Fleur Loef has an unconditional belief that new times are a-coming. She is utterly convinced that operators and contractors are ready and waiting for action. She for example is currently hard at work preparing her own R & D agenda. “The strength of Auxilium lies above all in the fact that we work together with people who can provide truly extensive substantive and practical knowledge. One of most important observations we have made is that although engineers sometimes have ingenious ideas, they are not always practical. Based on our R & D formula, I certainly see possibilities for delivering practical added value to the new ideas, that in terms of marketing will enable us to make a real difference. Nonetheless, I recognise that things are not set to change overnight; hence my long-term vision. All the same, we are currently hard at work establishing a global network that will help us put our vision on ‘new’ business into practice. Already on the market there is evidence that more and more oil companies are focusing on their core business, and are passing on responsibility for specific activities to contractors. Those contractors must in turn prove themselves as EPC/ EPIC contractors, but when push comes to shove, many of them lack the necessary knowledge. And that is where Auxilium comes in. In particular in respect of underwater operations, we have all the necessary knowledge.

The only difficulty is that calling in assistance from outside means that contractors need to start thinking differently, bigger and far more collectively. Strength through cooperation!”

Cygnus topsides and module completed With the sail away of the Cygnus Alpha Compression Module (ACM) just after mid July 2015, the last of four main structures left Heerema Hartlepool, part of Heerema Fabrication Group (HFG) after two and a half years of construction.

HFG, headquartered in Zwijndrecht, the Netherlands, is a leading engineering and fabrication contractor for complex offshore structures to the global oil and gas and energy-related industry.

During the peak period of this project over 2000 people worked on our Hartlepool yards.

The Cygnus Bravo Wellhead Platform (BWHP) and the Cygnus Alpha Process & Utilities (APU) topside left earlier to the final offshore destination in the Southern North Sea. The key infrastructure, being the Cygnus Alpha Wellhead Platform (AWHP), sailed already in May 2014. The field consists of two drilling centres, the Alpha and Bravo. Heerema Hartlepool received the frame agreement from operator GDF Suez E&P UK Ltd (part of ENGIE Group) in August 2012 for the construction of three topsides, a compression module, with two bridges to connect the three Alpha platforms and a flare tower for the Cygnus field.

Strength and flexibility

Fabrication Group (HFG), said: “Within a period of two and a half years we have successfully delivered three topsides and a module from our Hartlepool yard. Alpha Wellhead was built first and the other structures were built simultaneously.

The successful completion of such a large-scale project is due to committed teamwork with our client GDF Suez E&P UK Ltd. During the fabrication of the topsides we implement the design changes.

This shows the strength and flexibility of our organisation when it comes to building complex structures.

During the peak period of this project over 2,000 people worked on our Hartlepool yards, where we successfully finished the project safely without major incidents.�

Largest

The APU platform is the largest one in the Cygnus field. It is 65x35x25 metres in size and weighs about 4,600 tonnes. The APU platform receives the gas from the Alpha and Bravo Wellhead platform and optimises the gas to prepare for transportation through a pipeline to the Bacton gas terminal onshore. Once the APU is installed the ACM module, with the 25 metres tall flare boom, will be incorporated on top of the APU topside.

The BWHP, an unmanned Satellite platform, is 42x25x13 metres in size and weighs approximately 3,200 tonnes and is situated 7 kilometres from the main hub. The BWHP will be operated remotely from the APU platform.

Maintenance and other personnel can reach the platform by helicopter.

Commissioning of the Solan project in West of Shetland This Summer Ampelmann, the Dutch global leader in motion compensated access solutions, will provide one of its offshore access solutions to enable ‘walk to work’ for a commissioning campaign on Premier Oil’s Solan field, West of Shetland. The Ampelmann system enables the safe and effective transfer of the workforce in one of the world’s most challenging offshore locations.

To meet the demands of working offshore West of Shetland, the multi-purpose service vessel Siem Spearfish is being fitted with an Ampelmann E-type system.

The E-type provides a stable transfer platform in conditions of up to 4.5 metres significant wave height thereby ensuring safe, efficient and reliable transfer of personnel.

“Contributing to a commissioning project in this challenging area is a significant milestone for Ampelmann and further reinforces our position as the global leader in motion controlled offshore access,” said Wiebe Emsbroek, Area Manager Europe at Ampelmann. “This safe and efficient way of transferring personnel offshore has become a viable and effective alternative to other transfer methods and Ampelmann is extremely pleased to set the standard in safety again in this landmark project.”

Effects of noise on health and safety of offshore workers Offshore facilities are generally compact in nature and contain a relatively high proportion of noisy equipment and processes per area of occupancy. Therefore, it is not surprising that noise is a common physical health hazard encountered offshore.

It has the potential to cause both physiological and psychological impairment in exposed individuals, which in turn may affect their performance at work and have an impact on production costs.

What are the risks of offshore noise?

“Noise is one of the most prevalent health hazards faced by offshore workers, and can lead to noiseinduced hearing loss (NIHL) and sleep disturbance, with subsequent exhaustion and stress,” writes R. Gardner in his 2003 report on health risks on offshore oil and gas installations, published by the Oxford University Press. NIHL has serious and long-term effects: it is permanent and cannot be reversed.

Besides the health risks, significant safety risks are linked to noise.

Loud noises interfere with communication and warning signals, and make it difficult to hear moving equipment.

Here noise contributes to accidents and injuries. Especially when companies reduce noise risks by introducing personal hearing protection, which makes it even harder to communicate and hear warnings.

As well as these human costs, there are potential production costs from

reduced productivity levels and sickness absence. In extreme cases of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), companies may need to deal with medical emergencies and compensation claims. These are serious implications, when you know NIHL accounts for 75 per cent of all occupational disease claims – as stated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), a British institute that shapes regulations, produces research and enforces health and safety law.

When is noise too loud?

When a person is exposed to noise there is always some probability of being affected by an adverse health effect. But how much noise is too much?

According to the L108 – Controlling Noise at Work (2005) report of HSE, all general work areas cannot exceed 83 dB(A) for a twelve-hour working day and 85 dB (A) for an eight-hour working day. Above this so called ‘upper exposure limit’, the employer is required to take reasonably practicable measures to reduce noise exposure, such as engineering controls.

Where reliable speech, telephone or radio communication is required, or demanding mental tasks must be performed, then the noise limits for these areas need to be considerably less than the limit for general work areas. The HSE Offshore Technology Report 2001/068 specifies different noise limits for different areas, varying from a maximum of 70 dB(A) at the workshops, 55 dB(A) in control rooms, to 45 dB(A) in sleeping and recreation areas.

These limits generally apply for broad band noise. Where a noise exhibits dominant tonal characteristics, then it may be desirable to suppress such characteristics.

What are the benefits of controlling noise?

The risks of noise are evident now.

Therefore, proper noise control assures the following basic needs of offshore workers: • Minimal risk of hearing damage to personnel in work areas.

• Warning signals are audible.

• Adequate speech, telephone and radio communication is possible.

• Acceptable night rest and recreation environment provided.

• Working efficiency is maintained.

Is personal hearing protection sufficient?

The HSE suggests that personal hearing protection should not be proposed as a substitute for effective noise control. They are not considered to reduce noise exposure and are therefore not appropriate as a longterm strategy to manage noise exposures. They are strictly viewed as short-term (interim) controls until more substantial engineering and administrative controls can be implemented.

How can we reduce offshore noise effectively?

Noise risk management principles are based on several options that should be considered and followed in this order. First, it needs to be seen whether the noise source can be substituted with a less noisy alternative.

If this is not possible or practicable, noise control engineering should be implemented. This means implementing extra measures in order to reduce the equipment’s noise. Alara-Lukagro is an expert in this field and engineers, produces and installs many offshore noise control solutions, such as: • sound insulating enclosures for generators, pumps, and other machines; • sound proof control cabins; • acoustic screens; • sound and fire resistant doors; • sound proof fitness containers; • acoustic ventilation set; • silencers for ventilation openings; • vibration isolators which prevent contact noise.

A third step is implementing administrative controls. This means reducing the duration of exposure to noise or removing the person from the noisy environment (i.e. an ‘unmanned’ facility), if it is practicable to do so.

Personal hearing protection is only for use when the above control options have been implemented as far as reasonably practicable, and unprotected exposures still exceed the prescribed exposure standards.

Electrostatic Coalescers for additional 250,000 barrels of oil per day

Frames, the Dutch supplier of oil and gas solutions, successfully completed the fabrication of two enormous Electrostatic Coalescers for the Shaybah Oil Field GOSP 4 CPF Expansion (Gas/Oil Separation Plant) in Saudi Arabia. In 2014 Frames was awarded the design and supply of the vessels by Samsung Engineering, the Korean EPC contractor.

The Shaybah Oil Field is Saudi Aramco’s most remote oil field and is located in the northern edge of the Rub’ Al-Khali desert.

The current production of this field is about 750,000 barrels per day.

The Electrostatic Coalescers, also known as Dehydrators / Desalters will be used to dehydrate and desalt an additional 250,000 barrels of oil per day at the Shaybah Field and are therefore huge in size; 49 metres long and 4.3 metres in diameter.

This system can be installed on a variety of vessels, barges, platforms or other offshore structures and performs a wide range of drilling and lifting operations. The flexible and modular design makes the Modular Drilling System suitable for a large range of applications in various markets. The system can be used for e.g. geotechnical drilling operations, well intervention, plug and abandonment operations, subsea mining, top hole drilling, wireline operations, compensated coiled tubing and modular lifting activities. The modularity of the design and limited mechanical and electrical interfaces facilitate easy mobilisation between various vessels and other structures at sea.

The multipurpose system not only fits divers operating activities, it also makes it possible to work in a large weather window. To reduce the influence of waves upon the lifting and drilling operations, the drilling tower is equipped with a Passive Heave Compensation system that is a standard part of the hoist system.

This compensation, executed by a hydraulic cylinder keeping the tools in position, ensures the system to follow the vessel motions. For more severe conditions and motions Active Heave

Compensation can be added. The motions are measured by a Motion Reference Unit and are sent to the control system of the winches, creating a longer uptime for your operation.

SMSTs first set up of the system, recently delivered to the Chinese market, has been for geotechnical purposes. The specific tasks of the so called Offshore Geotechnical Drilling System are down hole or seabed sampling and testing operations.

With the samples of seabed material the most suitable type of foundation can be determined for offshore structures, like jack up rigs, jackets, PLETs or wind turbines. The system for riserless drilling has a capacity from 60 up to 240 tonnes and facilitates drilling at a depth of 600 to 1,500 metres. All items of the drilling system are configured for advanced operating and enable safe and adequate access to the equipment for drilling operations, maintenance and service.

Extra flexibility can be found in the optional items that are available for the system. For example, there is the possibility to perform the pipe handling activities manually; the optional pipe handling deck can be added for fully automated operations. A telescopic pipe handling crane, catwalk machine and two off pipe racks enable hands off execution of the process, allowing increased work safety and low operational costs. The drilling and pipe handling operations can be monitored and processed from the rigid and safe control cabin with large windows for maximum visibility.
