According to the latest forecasts oil will remain the single largest energy source until 2040. Natural gas will replace coal as the second largest source of energy by 2040; and renewables are forecasted to become increasingly important in 2040. In general the opinion is that the global primary energy demand is set to increase due to population growth and larger middle income groups, this despite of the effect of increasing efficiency and less fuel consumption in the western world.

The Dutch oil and gas supply industry plays an important role in providing innovative solutions for large complex oil and gas projects all around the world. Although a small country, the Netherlands is recognised all over the world for its international orientation. The Dutch upstream oil and gas supply industry belongs to the top 5 of the world, together with US, UK, Norway and France. Export is very important for the Dutch oil & gas supply industry, 75% of our turnover is export related.

Therefore, investments in new technology and innovations that extend the life of operational fields in the North Sea, deep water development, arctic areas, GTL and offshore renewable energy will continue and are of great importance for our industry.

In order to promote the interests of the Dutch suppliers abroad, IRO participates in trade missions in cooperation with embassies and organises Dutch pavilions at all major international oil and gas exhibitions.

The highly innovative attitude of the Dutch, also demonstrated in advanced safety and environmental standards, is outstanding and at the same time the driving force behind the success of the Dutch suppliers’ industry.

First project removal of Yme platform In 1978, with the introduction of the semi-submersible crane vessels ‘Balder’ and ‘Hermod’, his father Pieter Schelte Heerema succeeded in a single action in considerably pushing the boundaries of the offshore installation market. History will repeat itself when his son Edward P. Heerema puts a supersized, highly-innovative, single-lift vessel into operation, which just like the Balder and Hermod of their day, is unique in the world. And if it is up to the founder and CEO of Allseas, there is more to follow.

This father and son can certainly be described as offshore pioneers. With the monohull crane vessels ‘Challenger’ (1969), ‘Champion’ (1972), ‘Thor’ (1974) and ‘Odin’ (1976), Pieter Schelte Heerema had already succeeded in pushing the boundaries of the offshore installation market ever further. Lifting record after lifting record was established by these vessels, in particular in the North Sea region, where oil and gas fields were put into production in a never ending series. Subsequently, he was the first to make the daring move of operating semi-submersible crane vessels. To make this possible, the ‘Balder’ and ‘Hermod’ were fabricated between 1977 and 1979 at the Japanese Mitsui yard.

Each ship was equipped with two large cranes which in tandem could lift loads up of to 5,000 tonnes. Later, that lifting capacity was increased to 8,000 tonnes. Such character traits as daring, an urge to innovate and excellent entrepreneurial spirit are undeniably deeply ingrained in the genes of his son Edward, who with his company Allseas has now demonstrated in the pipelaying market that a pioneering approach also pays. Here, with his fleet of advanced monohull pipeplayers, he too is constantly breaking new ground. Furthermore, from just one year following the company’s foundation in 1985, he has been hard at work thinking about the design


of a single-lift vessel capable of installing topsides and jackets of platforms offshore, with weights that far exceed the capacity of the semi-submersible crane vessels. In honour of his father, Edward has named this vessel ‘Pieter Schelte’. Initial concept

During a press conference held in London on 3 June 1987, Edward Heerema presented his plan for massively pushing the boundaries of the offshore installation market, with the ‘Pieter Schelte’, by linking together two super tankers (VLCCs) and installing a lifting system between the bow sections capable of the offshore installation of topsides weighing up to 55,000 tonnes. This news spread like wildfire throughout the offshore sector, and the response was both amazed and sceptical. Looking back on that period, the originator of the concept commented: “They were very exciting times for us all. We were all young, enthusiastic people, and having just established Allseas, we were keen to realise what we all thought was a super idea. At the time, however, in every possible respect we were still too small for the task, also in terms of financing. The concept at the time was also not good enough to build the installation vessel in that form. We still had a long way to go before we could perfect the design, and raise our organisation to a level at which we could tackle such a challenge. In other words, we had misjudged our abilities, although we were convinced that our plans could be put into practice. That fact was a huge stimulus to carry on.” Multifunctional deployment

In the years that followed, no stone was left unturned in improving the initial concept, and further expanding the organisation.

Market developments were also closely monitored. Heerema continued: “The installation market was certainly a factor that gave us sufficient confidence in the late nineteen eighties and early nineteen nineties to believe that a large vessel of this kind would be necessary. In the first instance, the ship was only intended to be used for installation work. It was only some six years later that we also started thinking about what became known as removals. Given the reversal of the same principle (in other words reversed installation), a vessel of this kind would be relatively easily capable of removing large platform parts from the sea. After a number of years, we also realised that if we wanted to keep a vessel like the ‘Pieter Schelte’ operational for say nine months a year, the ship would also have to be capable of pipelay operations, as well as the installation and removal of platform parts. The ship had a number of specific characteristics that made it suitable for all of these tasks, including the vessel’s considerable length, the dynamic positioning system that we had introduced by that time, and the deck space available for the storage

of pipes, and the possibility of suspending the stinger in the slot between the bow sections. This led us to decide that we would also make the vessel a very heavy pipelayer. In the MARIN institute, extensive model tests were carried out in order to better understand the movement behaviour of the ship, and to determine her sailing speed. We also wanted to determine whether it was possible to further perfect the concept.” Start of construction

In June 2010, Allseas announced that the construction of the ‘Pieter Schelte’, the largest platform installation/ decommissioning and pipelay vessel in the world, was actually going ahead. The outcome would be a super-large catamaran with a length of 382 metres and a width of 124 metres. “We had decided to award the contract for building the ‘Pieter Schelte’ to the Daewoo yard in South Korea,” continued Edward Heerema. “At that moment, the concept for the ‘Pieter Schelte’ had been determined for quite some time. In deciding on the width of the slot between the bow sections, at the time we had to make do with fairly generic information

provided by the oil companies about the dimensions of their existing platforms. We decided to make the slot 52 metres wide. However, when we undertook a series of detail studies for the oil companies about four years later, the actual figure emerged, and we repeatedly came up against the fact that the slot would probably be too narrow. This was very frustrating for us, because by then we had designed a vessel that with the exception of the opening between the bow sections was fabulous, in every respect. We therefore asked the yard to make the slot seven metres wider. Initially they refused, but when it turned out that they needed more time to complete the construction process anyway, and asked us permission, we were able to arrive at a settlement on the widening of the slot, too.” The eventual outcome was that the ‘Pieter Schelte’ would be

completed six months later than planned. The slot is now 122 metres long and 59 metres wide. Lifting beams

For the installation and decommissioning of topsides weighing up to a maximum of 48,000 tonnes, eight sets of two horizontal lifting beams will be deployed, all of them equipped with hydraulic clamps or grabs. The lifting beams are being fabricated in Italy. “The clamps will be suspended in a system of arms that are able to move up and down thanks to the active motion compensation system, in addition to which the beams can move both sideways and be rolled in and out. As a result, active control means that movements can be compensated for in three directions. If you wish to employ the so-called fast-lift method, the system of arms is extended using a number of very

large cylinders, whereby the entire topsides is lifted several metres.” If it is necessary to lift highlypositioned topsides from a gravitybased structure (GBS), the draft of the vessel is reduced, and special yokes are installed in the clamps, which can be forced against the underside of the topside unit, to raise it. This same method is to be employed for the Brent contract for Shell, the first contract Allseas was awarded for the deployment of the ‘Pieter Schelte’. “Three of the four topsides of the Brent complex are in fact the superstructure section of a GBS. For this project, it will indeed be necessary to cover considerable heights. Studies have also been undertaken regarding the removal of the topsides from a high concrete substructure in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea.” Also as part of the Brent contract, a large steel jacket will


have to be removed. “The lifting system for jackets on the stern of the ‘Pieter Schelte’ is only to be installed on board in two years time. The winches required for the system have already been built into the ship, and the necessary high-quality steel has been purchased. The final details for the engineering are currently being concluded, so that a start can be made on the fabrication of the system in the near future. The Brent jacket is not due to be removed until 2019, so we still have sufficient time available.” When a jacket is raised from the seabed, it is drawn up against the lifting or tilting yoke. The yoke and jacket are subsequently tilted backwards, and the jacket is placed horizontally on the deck of the ‘Pieter Schelte’, for further transport. The maximum lifting capacity for jacket removal is 25,000 tonnes.

First project

Edward Heerema recognised the special nature of the fact that oil company Shell had contracted the ‘Pieter Schelte’ for the Brent decommissioning project, even before the vessel had sailed a single metre. The Brent field is in the British sector of the North Sea, 186 kilometres northeast of Lerwick in Scotland. The local water depth is 140 metres. The field comprises four large production platforms. Of these, the Brent Alpha consists of a steel jacket and a steel superstructure, while the Brent Bravo, Brent Charlie and Brent Delta consist of a concrete GBS with a steel superstructure. The weights of the topsides are between 16,000 and 30,000 tonnes. First of all, during the period 20152016, the ‘Pieter Schelte’ is due to remove the topside from the Brent

Delta. The other topsides will follow in subsequent years. According to current expectations, however, the ‘Pieter Schelte’ will first see service in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. “Our first project will be the removal of the Yme platform operated by Talisman. Following installation in the Yme field, this platform proved unstable, and as a consequence has never actually worked. Because this instability represents a risk, the platform has to be removed. We expect to be able to complete this job during the course of next May.” To bring the topsides removed from the sea ashore, Allseas has built a special transport barge, that can be manoeuvred between the bow sections. “The topside is then transferred in sheltered and sufficiently-deep water. Once at the yard, the topside can be

slid from the barge onto the quayside. For a new-built topside, the process is repeated, but in reverse. The barge will be 200 metres long and 57 metres wide. For the Brent contract, we are also responsible for transporting the platform sections and the safe delivery of the topsides to the quayside at the Able yard in Hartlepool, where the dismantling process will be undertaken. For the dismantling itself, Shell has signed a separate contract with Able. There are however oil companies that wish to include the total onshore dismantling, in the overall contract. This makes it necessary for us to subcontract a dismantling yard.”

Pipelaying

The first pipelay contract for ‘Pieter Schelte’ will be South Stream; a 890 km long, 32-inchpipeline in water depths up to 2,200 m in the Black Sea. The stinger is currently under construction at Iemants in Belgium and being assembled in Vlissingen. Including the transition frame to be suspended between the hull and the stinger, the unit will be 210 metres long. The firing line with six welding stations for so-called double joints will run below deck, over the entire length of the vessel. The firing line will also include an NDT station for inspecting the weld seams, and six coating stations. The use of a transition frame of this kind means

that the stinger is already positioned at the ideal angle for guiding the pipeline into the sea. To keep the pipeline taut, 2,000 tonnes of tensioning capacity is available.” As well as crew accommodation, the deck offers storage space for 27,000 tonnes of pipes. Double-joint stations will be installed below the accommodation unit. At each of these stations, two 12-metre pipe joints will be welded together simultaneously into double joints with a length of 24 metres, before being fed into the firing line. In the future, the ‘Pieter Schelte’ will be capable of laying pipes with a maximum diameter of 68 inches in water depths of up to 3,000 metres.


Edward Heerema expects the ‘Pieter Schelte’ to leave the Daewoo yard in October of this year, before making the crossing to Western Europe. In the meantime Allseas has decided to install the topsides lifting beams at the Maasvlakte 2 in Rotterdam. This work will have to be carried out during the coming winter period. “That will enable us to undertake the Yme project in May.” The ‘Pieter Schelte’ is expected to achieve a maximum speed of 14 knots. The beating heart of the vessel consists of eight MAN diesel generators, together delivering an output of 95 MW. They will also supply the power for the twelve thruster units each with an output of 6,050 kW, to be installed in the bottom of the vessel. These units are not only responsible for propulsion, but are also linked to a class 3 dynamic positioning system.

Even bigger

The fact that even the ‘Pieter Schelte’ has far from reached the maximum limits of the offshore installation and removal market is reflected by the fact that an even larger version of this already impressive vessel is in the pipeline. Allseas announced its plans for this larger vessel last November. “It may seem a little strange that even before the first ship has been launched we have come up with plans for an even larger version, but we have been aware for many years that the ‘Pieter Schelte’ is not large enough for the very largest platforms. When we realised just how much interest there was in the ‘Pieter Schelte’, last year, we were upset that we would be unable to handle the very largest platforms. We have now become convinced that singlelifting becomes financially even more attractive as topsides grow in size,

as the relative advantages increase proportionally. With that in mind, some 2.5 years ago, we started designing a vessel with a lifting capacity for topsides with a weight of up to 72,000 tonnes, in other words fifty per cent more than the lifting capacity of the ‘Pieter Schelte’. This vessel will be 400 metres long and 160 metres wide, with an even deeper and wider slot between the bow sections, and twelve sets of two lifting beams. We tested the design with a number of oil companies, including Norway’s Statoil, last year. These companies responded very enthusiastically. The result was a decision that this vessel must also be built.” According to expectations, the bigger sister of the ‘Pieter Schelte’ should be operational by 2020. In other words, history continues to repeat itself.

Transport and installation of a complete platform

SPT Offshore sets up suction piles for Wintershall SPT Offshore successfully installed the 3 suction piles forming the foundation of SPT’ s tripod substructure and minimum facilities concept utilized for the Wintershall L6-B field development. The suction piles were simultaneously installed in a record time of 3 hours. Similarly, the verticality achieved was 0.01 degree out of vertical, which is near perfect.

Wintershall Noordzee B.V. had contracted Scaldis Marine Contractors NV for the installation of the L6-B platform, in the Dutch sector of the North Sea, in block L6. The water depth on the development location is 35 metres. The location of the platform is situated 25 nM North West of Terschelling, the Netherlands. Scaldis had subcontracted Suction Pile Technology to execute the actual suction operations.

capacity of 3,300 tonnes. A special tool had been developed in cooperation with Innovative Input, based in Ridderkerk. The 4,000 tonnes spreader enclosed the platform mast, via hydraulic opening doors. Thereafter rigging would be connected via hydraulic shackles to the bottom part of the foundation, the suction piles. The structure was then be lifted from the quayside and transported, in the hooks of the HLV Rambiz, to the installation site.

New

In a joint effort between Wintershall and Scaldis a methodology was developed with a prime focus of minimizing the duration of the offshore activities. After all, a reduction of the duration of the offshore activities automatically leads to a reduction of risk and overall costs. The newly developed methodology consists of the transport and installation of a complete platform to site. The complete platform was picked up from a quayside in Rotterdam using the heavy lift vessel Rambiz with a

Scaldis heavy lift vessel Rambiz transported and installed the tripod and minimal facilities topsides as one piece (which is a novelty in itself) in a record time of only 3 days including sailing to the field, installation and demobilization to port. Upon arrival on site, the Rambiz moored in the correct position and orientation. The complete platform was then lowered until the suction piles reached the seabed. By reducing the pressure in the voids inside the

suction piles, the suction piles penetrated into the seabed until they had reached the target depth of 10 metres below seabed. This methodology is fast, efficient and environmentally friendly operation. Upon completion of the suction operation the platform inclination was verified. Thereafter the rigging connection was disconnected, the hydraulic spreader bar door opened and released from the structure.

Aeolus in port of IJmuiden

Installation of monopile gripper frame completed It was an impressive sight, the brand new transport and installation vessel Aeolus of Van Oord, the Dutch family-owned business offering marine solutions, berthed in the port of IJmuiden. The innovative and advanced transport and installation vessel has a length of 139 m, 38 m in the beam, a design draught of 5.7 m and a crane that can lift more than 900 tonnes.

The vessel’s first project will be the construction of the Luchterduinen offshore wind project, which is an Eneco energy company and Mitsubishi Corporation assignment. This project will be built 23 km off the Dutch coast near Noordwijk and Zandvoort. The wind farm will consist of 43 wind turbines.

In the port of IJmuiden a so-called monopile gripper frame, produced by Breman Offshore, was installed on board of the Aeolus. The gripper is designed to keep the monopiles in the correct position and inclination, while counteracting the wave, wind, and current loads on the pile during wind turbine installations.

At BigRoll Shipping in Amsterdam, the new innovative provider of long-distance marine transportation solutions, they are looking to the future with a healthy dose of tension. As a subsidiary of BigLift Shipping and RollDock Shipping, this new Dutch operator is looking forward to October 2015 when the first of two MC Class Module Carriers currently under construction for the transportation of ultra large and heavy modular cargo is set to be launched. Offshore Holland spoke to Johan Boer (49), Commercial Director, and Bauke van Gent (30), Commercial Manager. Together with colleague Paul Meester of the Rotterdam office of BigRoll, the pair are currently travelling the world to introduce their unique DP2 equipped vessels to the large EPCs, and to deliver technical presentations. The overwhelming interest is a reflection of their potential success. “Despite the fact that we are not yet able to show any track record, the confidence in the vessels and our complete service is already great,” revealed an enthusiastic Johan Boer. “And as things look at present, we should be able to announce our first contracts to the world, before the ONS event in Stavanger.”

In mid-June of this year, BigRoll Shipping announced that the first steel for the ‘BigRoll Barentsz’ had been cut at the Cosco Dalian Shipyard in China. The ‘Barentsz ‘is scheduled for delivery in October 2015. Sister vessel BigRoll Bering will follow in December 2015. Both vessels have been designed with a focus on high-ballasting capacity in order to reduce loading and discharge times

while ensuring low fuel consumption, high service speed and great sea-keeping behaviour, with the resultant lower acceleration forces on the valuable cargo. The remarkable hull design and propulsion configuration ensure reliable and fast transit times. The BigRoll MC Class vessels have been specifically designed to deliver modules and equipment for large projects, and are highly suited for travel to remote areas such as the Arctic, as well as destinations immediately offshore. For this reason, the vessels enjoy Finnish Swedish 1A Ice Class notations. “The third and fourth vessel we hope to order will be named ‘BigRoll Baffin’ and ‘BigRoll Beaufort’,” explained Johan Boer. “All the names come from famous Arctic explorers and researchers, and were inspired by the vessels’ suitability for shipping to Arctic waters.” Engineering

The combination of the expertise of BigLift and RollDock, who share the

In relation to existing vessels, the BigRoll units currently under construction will have a relatively extended bow. As Bauke van Gent


explained: “In particular that eyecatching bow in combination with the entire interplay of lines has an extremely positive effect in rough seas. Extensive model tests in special tanks at MARIN, the Maritime Research Institute for the Netherlands in Wageningen, have demonstrated that the movement characteristics of our ship design are excellent. The vessel cuts through the waves better, suffers less hard blows and as a consequence is able to continue sailing longer and faster in poor weather than other vessel types. This extended capability is reflected by the fact that even in high waves and swell, the vessels are extremely friendly in terms of the costly cargo. In addition, all BigRoll ships are to be equipped with innovative software applications that enable us here at the office to monitor the forces acting on the vessel and the cargo during poor weather conditions, enabling us to select the most optimum routing, in consultation with our client. In other words, it is not immediately necessary to reduce speed, a fact which delivers attractive savings in terms of energy

consumption, and ensures reliable arrival times. Both are decisive characteristics highly appreciated by the market. Finally, the designed ballast capacity for the vessels is so large that considerable time savings can be achieved during loading and unloading operations, thereby further reducing the risks. Another key element is that the deck is completely free of manholes and airheads. It can be used over the full length and beam for loading, discharging and stowage. If you look at the USPs of these vessels, I am willing to make the claim that we can come very close to meeting even the most extreme wishes of our customers. On top of that, we are a thoroughbred Dutch business with exclusively Dutch officers on board all our vessels. For the maritime market, the Netherlands as a seagoing nation is a quality label in itself. We have a rock-solid image, and that gives us a clear advantage over other countries.” Will the BigRoll vessels also have a role to play in the construction of offshore wind farms? Commercial Director Boer suggests they will. “What we are talking about

are state-of-the-art DP2 units. Honesty compels me to say that for the time being our focus will be on the transportation of large modules, but wind energy is certainly a market that is worthy of our serious consideration. Initial contacts with potential clients from that market have already been established.”

IHC sells subsidiary IHC Sealing Solutions IHC has reached an agreement to sell 100% of its shares in its subsidiary IHC Sealing Solutions. The new owners are Willem Steenge, who as CEO is partly responsible for the strong growth of IHCSealing Solutions in recent years, and Rabo Participaties (RaPar).

The sale enables IHC to strengthen its focus on its core business: offering integrated innovative vessels, advanced equipment and life-cycle support to the dredging, wet mining and offshore construction industries. Bram Roelse, CEO of IHC, said: “IHC Sealing Solutions is a very stable and healthy company that deals with great projects and strong patents. However, its activities are not directly related to IHC’s business strategy. IHC Sealing Solutions has been operating independently since 1979 and its target markets are mostly external to IHC’s activities.”

IJPOS is putting IJmuiden on the offshore map

‘Collaboration makes us much stronger’

Offshore activities in the port of IJmuiden.

The business cluster IJPOS, established in 2013, can offer a whole raft of offshore and maritime disciplines and quality, for every square kilometre. The acronym stands for IJmuiden Ports & Offshore Services, and the members stand for sobriety, simplicity and short communication lines. In other words, typical IJmuiden; no bells and whistles, but instead clean lines and clear thinking. The aim is to collectively win major offshore and maritime projects with a single main contractor, to bring on board the specialist services and to ensure that customers receive the assistance they need at a level of quality that matches their requirements, and with all suitable haste, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Offshore Holland spoke to chairman John Apeldoorn and treasurer Sjoerd Wesselius about pride, shared ideas, the one-stop shop formula and the challenges facing this newly-established cluster.

In the perception of the entrepreneurial pair, for years, the port of IJmuiden has undersold itself as a service port – a shortcoming that can be attributed to both the municipal and port authorities, and the local businesses. “In that respect, we as business owners are ready to accept responsibility,” suggested Wesselius, in all honesty. One of the first successes achieved by the combined businesses in the IJmuiden port area (fishery and service companies) was the cancellation of the port regulations, a draft version of which was already completed. These regulations had suggested that in order to protect the environment, a number of activities could no longer be undertaken in the port of IJmuiden. Ships, a work platform or an offshore structure would only be permitted to remain in port for three days to carry out maintenance, repairs or to

implement modifications. After that time, an alternative mooring would have to be sought. “Fortunately, a number of leading businesses took action aimed at bringing an end to the new regulations. It was during one of those meetings that the term ‘service port’ was first used,” remembered Wesselius, as if it were yesterday. Because that is what IJmuiden has become today; a service port! Brain position

“One thing that clearly emerged at the time was the lack of pride among local businesses,” added Apeldoorn. “There was no single-mindedness. We all knew one another, but no-one sought inspiration from others. It was a matter of every man for himself. On the other hand, IJmuiden is a unique port, ideally suited for carrying out major repair and

modification projects. Nonetheless, there was a lack of understanding among the majority of businesses that the only way of establishing a solid position was to join forces, and that a combined approach was the fundamental basis for a huge economic boost.” With that in mid, Apeldoorn and Wesselius at the time summoned all the port-related businesses, and as the initiators presented their vision before calling upon their fellow entrepreneurs to join them. The call turned out to be a real eye-opener. The decision was taken to move forward side by side, shoulder to shoulder, in order to continue to play a meaningful role for the international oil and gas industry and for the builders of offshore wind farms. Within a short time, IJPOS was formally established.

According to a summary on the IJPOS website, the cluster currently has 21 members. New members are welcome, but they must be businesses with a suitable profile. The core business

of every new member must be complementary to the range of services already on offer from IJPOS. Every IJPOS member must as it were take on the role of presenter and ambassador for the business cluster,” suggested Wesselius. “The members must be enthusiastic and convinced when explaining the strength of our cooperation to the outside world. Only in that way will we be a credible force. Offshore contractors must view ‘entrepreneurial’ IJmuiden as one major supplier. They will do business with a single local main contractor, calm in the knowledge that that contractor is backed up by twenty other companies. That perception ties in seamlessly with our ambition, namely the provision of a combined set of services to offshore, wind energy and port-related customers, each based on our own skills set.”

The offshore industry regulations, requirements and standards for both safety and comfort of personnel and equipment are getting higher and more demanding. In order to meet the high requirements in the industry it is essential that companies in the Oil & Gas industry have a focus on development and innovation of its products. Van Dam, based in Heijningen, has anticipated the ever increasing requirements by developing a complete range of tested and certified pneumatic operated fire rated blast doors.

Van Dam is aware of the continuous increase of requirements, rules and regulations. This, in combination with the technical development of products and equipment has led to the result that a number of years ago, Van Dam decided to develop a complete range of fire rated blast doors which meet the NORSOK standards. Van Dam has done a thorough study into the Norwegian offshore rules and regulations and the NORSOK standards. Based on these results, Van Dam designed a complete new range of NORSOK compliant fire rated blast doors, wall systems and windows. NORSOK standards

The requirements for automatic

operated doors is driven by the stringent NORSOK standards. In order to improve the safety and working conditions offshore, the NORSOK standards specify that the opening force (initial force required to open a door) shall not exceed certain values. As a result of this standard, external, and some internal doors, depending on size and weight, need to be equipped with an automatic door opening system. Pneumatic door drive system

Van Dam has developed pneumatic operated doors which are being delivered as complete factory installed units which are ready for installation onto the platform, vessel or ship.

The first step is the design and engineering of the doors and pneumatic systems. This involves the engineering of general arrangement drawings, P&ID schedules, wiring diagrams, etc. which need to be approved by the client. After approval, fabrication of the door and pneumatic system starts. This implies that after fabrication of the door, the complete pneumatic system is installed onto the door. This means that the cylinder will be connected to the door, the control box will be installed on a base plate and all tubing is factory installed. Before transportation of the doors to the yard, the pneumatic operated doors are subject to an extensive factory acceptance test (FAT).

The pneumatic system is fully tested and certified and all materials are made from full stainless steel. Tubing, couplings and other pneumatic components can also be supplied in alternative materials such as super duplex and 6 Molly. When space is limited on the platform or vessel, Van Dam can also supply the system in loose components which can be installed on-site. Van Dam supplies complete installation manuals with the materials but can also supervise the installation by the yard or do the complete installation on-site. Unique

There is a close relation between NORSOK standards and the NMA/ NMD regulations and a number of DNV standards for weather tightness. These requirements have all been incorporated in the NORSOK proof door range which puts Van Dam in a unique position in the world as a supplier of fire and blast rated doors.

Extreme requirements

As the NORSOK standards are a leading standard in the industry, Van Dam sees these standards being used in more and more countries outside of Norway. As an example, the Dutch company is currently involved with the supply of more than 200 pneumatic operated fire rated blast doors which will be installed on the Central Processing Platform and FPSO for the INPEX Ichthys Project which will be operating in Western Australia. This project is a combination of extreme requirements. The doors located on the FPSO need to operate under the extreme condition of 25 degrees heel and 4 degrees trim, while still meeting the NORSOK requirements. This means that the doors need to be able to open and close at least 4 times after power failure. There are extreme oversized doors which have a weight of more than 1.000 kg which results in a large quantity of air bottles which provides enough air supply in order to

open and close the extreme size doors. The company has supplied pneumatic operated door systems for more than 10 projects in the last 2 years, to all major shipyards in the world. Electrical system

Beside the pneumatic operated fire rated blast doors, Van Dam also supplies electrical operated fire rated blast doors. These doors are suitable for both internal and external application. Similar to the pneumatic operated doors, the electrical system is also fully integrated onto the door before delivery to the yard. Van Dam has also developed a complete range of fire and blast rated walls, heat and wind shield cladding, winterizing walls and fire rated blast windows fully compliant to the NORSOK standards.

The Happy S vessels of BigLift Shipping

More flexibility for large and high cargoes Based in Amsterdam, BigLift Shipping is one of the world’s leading heavy lift shipping companies, specialized in worldwide ocean transportation of heavy lift and project cargoes. In 2013 the first new-building vessel of the Happy S-type, called ‘Happy Sky’ entered the fleet. Sister vessel ‘Happy Star’ will begin her first voyage in August 2014.

These flagships have a lifting capacity of two times 900 mt, combinable to 1,800 mt. The length of the vessels and the forward position of the superstructure offer a single, large cargo hold and an extremely wide, open deck area. To make sure BigLift could meet the latest requirements of the market the specifications of both vessels were changed during the design and construction period. The most important changes to the design were the increase in the crane lifting height and outreach and the decision to operate both vessels without a stability pontoon. It has been widely acknowledged that the use of pontoons for vessels of this size is a large safety risk during loading and unloading operations. Happy Sky

‘Happy Sky’ is the latest addition to

the fleet of heavy lift vessels BigLift manages. With her two Huisman built 900 mt heavy lift mast cranes she will be the new flag ship. In a response to market demands, the crane pedestals are now 4 metres higher than in the original plans, giving the vessel a lifting height unmatched in the world fleet of heavy lift vessels. ‘Happy Sky’ is 155 metres long and has 18.680 dwt. The vessel’s length and the forward position of her superstructure offer a single, large cargo hold and a wide, open deck area. She has folding hatch covers, a large poop deck and cargo rails which make the vessel’s full deck area available for cargo stowage. ‘Happy Sky’s’ tween deck is adjustable in height and she is allowed to sail with open weather deck hatches at a draught of up to 7.5 metres. Furthermore, she has Finnish/Swedish

With its features, Happy Star offers unique lifting capabilities for the heavy lift and project cargo market. Her lifting curve ranges from 1,800 mt at 25 metres, 1,600 mt at 28 metres to 1,000 mt at 41 metres, with a lifting height of nearly 47 metres above the main deck. With the weather deck extending over the full width of the vessel, her load space can used to the utmost. The weather deck hatch covers are pontoon type and bear 15 t/m2. The tweendeck is adjustable in height and ‘Happy Star’ can sail with open weather deck hatches on a draught of up to 8 metres. The vessel will also have Finnish/Swedish 1A Ice Class notation.

Bluestream seeks role as service contractor With a series of new investments in state-of-the-art ROVs, special tools and diving spreads, Bluestream has taken an impressive step towards meeting the needs of its clients in the oil and gas industry and offshore wind energy sector, as a service contractor. However, to be able to continue to play this role in the future, even more will be needed, for example the in-house development of special tools, the adaptation of further optimisation of insourced systems and of course encouraging the company staff to contribute ideas on how to tackle various issues more smartly and more safely. All these elements combine to form the key to the success and rapid growth achieved over the past few years by the Dutch offshore company based in Den Helder.

To gain a clear impression of how Bluestream aims to fulfil this role, shareholders Rolf de Vries and Caspar Domstorff talked about their activities. Rolf de Vries explained: “We have signed a number of long-term IRM contracts with GDF SUEZ E&P Nederland, Total E&P Nederland, Chevron Exploration & Production

Netherlands and Dana Petroleum. In addition, we recently successfully concluded a long-term service contract for RWE. We are also responsible for carrying out a series of project-related tasks for various clients including Chevron, Total, GDF SUEZ and Dana. To be able to carry out this work, we generally charter

the necessary vessels ourselves, whereby we precisely select which ship best matches the project to be carried out. For example, we aim to deploy the ‘Seamar Splendid’ and ‘VOS Shelter’ for IRM work in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. The ‘VOS Shine’ was first deployed for UXO work in the German Bight,

before transferring to other work on behalf of Chevron. The position of the ‘VOS Shine’ has now been taken up by the ‘Stril Explorer’, a vessel currently deployed for intervention work on behalf of Total. We also recently chartered the brand-new ‘Stril Server’ for installation and IRM work for Dana, and the Ram is currently deployed for UXO work in the German Bight.” In the course of last winter, Bluestream also successfully deployed the Stril Explorer for pipeline contractor Cecon, a company that laid three pipelines in the Dutch Sector of the North Sea, on behalf of GDF SUEZ E&P. “The variety, availability and flexibility we achieve in terms of vessels and equipment means we can offer tailor-made services to our clients. They are guaranteed the perfect tool for every operation, without us having to offer a less suitable vessel simply because we own it, or have taken out a long-term charter for its use. Such vessels are often either over or under qualified for the type of work in question, a fact that has a direct influence on the (cost) efficiency and execution,” continued Caspar Domstorff. New ROVs

The Bluestream fleet was recently expanded with the addition of two Panther XT plus ROVs and five Tiger ROVs, bringing the ROV fleet to a total of sixteen units. The ROV systems are not only deployed for the installation market but also the drilling market. As Rolf de Vries went on: “With the so-called free-flying Tiger ROVs, we serve almost the entire Dutch drilling market. We operate a fleet of ten units, of which eight are

of the free-flyer type.” With these units, Bluestream works on behalf of almost all oil and gas operators on board the drilling rigs owned for example by Noble Drilling, Maersk Drilling and Swift Drilling. Free-flyers are also deployed from semisubmersible vessels and platforms operated by Seajacks International and Workfox. More complex support

The successful deployment of ROVs ties in with the company’s own development and purchase of stateof-the-art tooling and diving units. In the words of Rolf de Vries: “Because our clients are carrying out ever more complex operations worldwide, they are increasingly on the lookout for more complex support. We have responded to this need by investing heavily in new ROVs and tooling for systems for such tasks as remote subsea intervention. We then adapt these systems and develop the smartest possible tools in order to be able to carry out very specialist jobs. We also recently acquired a very large basin not only to allow us to independently carry out extensive system testing but also so that we can simulate the circumstances and setup.” Caspar Domstorff added: “Our ROVs are deployed in the lighter work class segment. We have upgraded our fleet to include larger ROVs, but they are still all compact units with plenty of power and extremely smart tooling. Our Panther Plus and Cougar ROVs, for example, enable us to offer optimum service to our clients, even in areas with very strong currents.” When it comes to adapting diving systems, the development of smart tools and the construction of diving

containers, a great deal of time and energy are spent on safety and ergonomics. “We also encourage both our clients and staff to think about ways in which new improvements can be made to make the systems even safer and more widely deployable.” New diving systems

Bluestream’s latest round of investments involves the purchase of two state-ofthe-art diving spreads. Diving spreads are systems made up of a decompression chamber and dive control equipment. Rolf de Vries explained: “The special feature of these systems is the underlying technology, most recently employed in the Medusa diving simulator of the Royal Netherlands Navy, in collaboration with IHC Hytech. IHC went on to further develop the technology, which has now been integrated in the two systems we have purchased. Both will be deployed by us for dive work in water depths of up to 50 metres, whereby in the deep water segment (between 30 and 50 metres), we will also make use of mixed gas. We describe this service as demand diving. Using this system means that we no longer need to deploy a complex saturation or enclosed bell system for our type of work, and the diving spread proves very (cost) effective once the seabed time is analysed. We expect the two new systems to be operational by August of this year. In total, we will then have seven full dive spreads at our disposal.” Bluestream is also highly active in the use of the rope access method for numerous offshore projects, including a series of recent dismantling projects.

DHTC in Den Helder

New helicopter simulator In August of this year, the old helicopter simulator at DHTC in Den Helder is to be replaced by a brand-new SEFtec 6XC dunker. The new facility will be used to provide the compulsory HUET training programmes for people who are transported to and from offshore platforms by helicopter.

DHTC was the first training institute in the Netherlands to offer a realistic course with a so-called Helicopter Underwater Escape Trainer (HUET) or helicopter simulator, in 1990. Since that time, practically all oil companies and related service companies have put their offshore personnel through HUET training in Den Helder. At the same time, the helicopter operators themselves make intensive use of this unique facility, for training their own crews. The Royal Netherlands Navy and the Defence Helicopter Command also used the facilities at DHTC for a period of more than seven years, for training their Lynx helicopter crews.

As the simulator used for these training courses is approaching the end of its useful life, it will be replaced by a modern SEFtec 6XC unit, with a length of 4.7 metres, a width of 2.3 metres and a height of 2.5 metres. The simulator, from a manufacturer in Ireland, weighs 1,700 kg and has seating for eight and six exit bays with removable panels, for configuration changes. Personnel who fly with helicopters of the types AW139, EC135 and S92 can use this simulator to learn how to quickly and safely exit from the aircraft in question, in the event of an emergency landing in the sea.

The purchase of the new helicopter simulator is part of a multiyear investment programme at DHTC which in turn is part of a large-scale renewal and improvement project for all exercise objects and training facilities in Den Helder. A fire training helicopter of the type AW139 was also recently purchased. Using this 9 metre-long, 3.30 metre-high helicopter simulator, realistic exercises

can be organised for fighting cockpit fires, cabin fires and luggage fires, or a fire that occurs during refuelling. HUET training is one of the many safety courses offered by DHTC, the Dutch training institute for the offshore oil and gas industry, the offshore wind energy sector, the shipping sector and fire brigades and offshore companies.

Near Market, Near Customer strategy

Noble Drilling brings two rigs to Keppel Verolme With 20 yards worldwide, the success of Keppel Offshore & Marine’s (Keppel O&M) Near Market, Near Customer strategy to cater to its customer’s needs and contribute to local content has been exemplified by Keppel Verolme.

With one of the largest dry-docks in Europe and ideally located in Rotterdam, close to the oil and gas fields of The Netherlands, UK and Norway, with direct access to the North Sea, Keppel Verolme has been the choice yard for seagoing vessels and floating offshore units in the region. The yard’s repeat customer, Noble Drilling, recently sent two jackup rigs for modification works at Keppel Verolme. In May 2014, the jack-up rig ‘Noble Lynda Bossler’ arrived for a complete renewal of her jacking system. During a four-week window between the rig’s busy drilling schedule, Noble Drilling took the opportunity to dry-dock the rig at Keppel Verolme for routine maintenance work and underwater inspections. The rig’s hull, main deck and several working and storage areas were blasted and painted, including the cantilever deck and drill floor. The ‘Noble Al White’ in drydock for an intensive two month maintenance period.

In addition, the hydraulic system under the drill floor was completely renewed and the top part of the derrick (water table) was removed for maintenance and some renewals and later replaced. Subsequently, a successful inclination test on the rig was carried out at Keppel Verolme’s quay and it departed the yard on 23 June 2014. In mid-June, another Noble drilling jack-up rig ‘Noble Al White’ arrived in Keppel Verolme. She was docked in the yard’s 405 metre long and 90 metre wide drydock for an intensive two month maintenance period. The yard’s work scope for this project includes structural modifications to the rig’s spud cans. A significant portion of the work is the conservation works to the legs of the rig which will be staged with scaffolding and wrapped completely in order for the painting and work to be done in the most environmentally friendly way. The yard will also install a temporary elevator for easy access to the rig’s legs. Other scheduled activities includes hull blasting and painting, maintenance work in several areas, steel renewals and conservation work in preload tanks and storage areas. Due to the large size of the rig and the deep draught for dry-docking a special guide frame has been designed and built in order to manoeuvre the rig safely and unobtrusively into the dry-dock. In addition to the above work, the yard was also contracted for the installation of a new main crane on board of the rig as well as fabrication and installation of the supporting structure and boom rest. New name

Noble Drilling is currently in the process of spinning off its standard specification drilling units. These drilling units will from third quarter

2014 be managed by a new, independent company called Paragon Offshore. The two drilling units mentioned above will become part of the Paragon Offshore fleet and will be renamed to ‘Paragon C461’ (‘Noble Lynda Bossler’) and ‘Paragon C20051’ (‘Noble Al White’). Paragon Offshore will manage a fleet of 42 mobile drilling units worldwide. In the North Sea Paragon Offshore will manage 7 jack-ups and 1 semi-submersible drilling unit. Various projects

Keppel Verolme carried out work for several other customers recently. In early 2014, the accommodation jackup rig ‘Seafox 1’ stayed for a short period in Keppel Verolme’s dry dock no. 7 together with the semisubmersible accommodation platform ‘Regalia’. In the same period, crane vessel ‘Saipem 3000’ stayed in dry-dock no 6 for modification work and the

pipelay vessel ‘Castoro Sei’ spent some time alongside Keppel Verolme’s quay for mobilisation to her new location in the North Sea. In the second quarter, jack-up rig ‘ENSCO 121’, which was built by Keppel FELS in Singapore, stayed in the yard for mobilisation and crew familiarization purposes for a period of two months. Many offshore projects for Damen shiprepair yards

Rowan contracts Damen for ‘Rowan Viking’ conversion The Damen Shipyards Group is proving increasingly successful in attracting work from the offshore sector for its ship repair yards in the Netherlands. The yard in Flushing, for example, recently started modification work on the jack-up drilling rig ‘Rowan Viking’, while the yard in Rotterdam has successfully completed a major lifetime extension project for the monohull cane vessel ‘Stanislav Yudin’.

At present, the shipyards group comprises more than fifty yards and related businesses, and enjoys an excellent reputation for the design and fabrication of a wide variety of vessel types. However, the group is also acquiring a growing reputation when it comes to carrying out complex conversion and ship repair projects. Around fifteen of the group’s shipyards are regularly employed carrying out ship repair and conversion work. Above all, the ship repair yards in the Netherlands are proving highly successful in the offshore sector. More than most, the Damen Scheldepoort Repair Yard in Flushing has attracted much attention. The most recent project for this yard involves alterations to the jack-up drilling rig ‘Rowan Viking’ operated by the American drilling operator Rowan Companies. The rig of the type Keppel FELS N-class, one of the largest active on the North Sea, is soon due to carry out more drilling work in Norwegian waters. As well as completing a special survey, a number of modifications to the rig will first be necessary. One of the most important is the extension of the three legs with ten metre-long sections, each weighing 120 tonnes. This will raise the total length of the

legs to 180 metres. The equipment needed to carry out this modification includes the Jack-Up Maintenance Platform (JUMP) from Palfinger Systems and one of Mammoet’s largest PTC cranes. The crane, with a height of more than 200 metres, will be used to install the leg section. The work on the ‘Rowan Viking’ is set to take 130 days in total.

Also over a six-month period, this rig was converted into an accommodation platform and rechristened the ‘Atlantic Amsterdam’. A number of smaller projects were carried out in the meantime, on cablelay and pipelay vessels. Lifetime-extending maintenance

Major conversions

For Damen Scheldepoort Repair Yard, the ‘Rowan Viking’ is the third large drilling rig that the yard has handled, in a row. Over a period of six months in 2011, the drilling rig ‘GSF Labrador’ was converted into an accommodation platform. The entire drilling installation was removed from the rig, a new 400-tonne accommodation block was installed and the existing accommodation renovated. Additional floaters were attached to the hull to improve stability, and three platforms were installed on-board, from which new lifeboats have been suspended. The helicopter deck was also strengthened. Following completion of this work, the rig was rechristened the ‘Atlantic Labrador’, and towed into the North Sea to carry out drilling work. In 2012, a similar conversion

At Damen Shipyard Repair Rotterdam, two large and complex lifetime extension projects were carried out, in quick succession. One project, that lasted more than a year, involved the repair of extensive storm damage and lifetime extension work on Maersk Oil’s massive ‘Gryphon FPSO’. In total, more than 600 tonnes of steel were replaced on this FPSO, at the yard’s dock. The thruster units were also overhauled, and the accommodation renovated, the electrical installation overhauled and modernised, and the process installation on deck was upgraded. For the final element of the work, pipelines, drums and platforms as well as various other items were replaced. Work was also carried out on the flare tower, the inert gas tower and the carrousel on the turret. w

Lift-Tex Industrie B.V., a leading manufacturer of heavy lift products made from synthetic fibers has recently developed a new round sling in their Extreema速 program using HMPE fibers produced by DSM Dyneema B.V. under their brand name Dyneema速. The achieved Breaking Load tests which were performed resulted in a Working Load Limit (WLL) of 350 tons with a safety factor (SF) of 1:7 or an amazing WLL of 500 ton with a SF of 1:5. The Dutch based heavy lift specialist is one of the first to have reached an MBL this high with a round sling made with parallel laid fibers.

After all this work, the entire FPSO was grit-blasted and repainted, before being returned to service, as good as new. The next major project was the lifetime extension of the monohull crane vessel ‘Stanislav Yudin’ operated by Seaway Heavy Lifting. This project was initiated last November, and was due to take more than 4.5 months. Key elements of the project were the complete renovation of the accommodation unit, the modernisation of the engine rooms and implementation of a variety of repair and conversion activities. In April of this year, the ‘Stanislav Yudin’ was once again ready for offshore deployment. Alongside major orders of this kind, the yard also regularly carries out repair work on wind turbine installation vessels, fallpipe vessels, seismic survey boats and diving support vessels. The most recent project involves special service and modernisation of the offshore support vessel ‘Relume’ operated by MENAS Marine Services. The work required on this ship will be completed this year, in two phases. Other projects

At Damen Shipdock in Amsterdam, the seismic survey vessel ‘Polarcus Naila’ was a hive of activity, at the start of this year. Not only was a special survey carried out, but in addition the entire propulsion system was modernised and a series of modifications carried out. Finally, at the Damen yards in Den Helder and Harlingen, four platform supply vessels were modified prior to deployment in Brazilian waters on behalf of Petrobras. The vessels in question were the ‘World Emerald’, ‘World Opal’, ‘World Peridot’ and ‘World Sapphire’, all of the type Damen PSV3300 CD. The four ships had all previously been handed over to World Wide Supply from Fosnavaag in Norway, by the Damen yard in Rumania.

Spectacular transport through the streets

Giant tanks from Belgium to Denmark

Early June this year, Wagenborg Nedlift started the transportation of 8 impressive LPG tanks, so called bullets, from the manufacturers’ location in Willebroek, Belgium to Denmark. Each tank had a transport dimension of 8.68 metres wide, 13.62 metres high and a length of 38.54 metres. The weight including supports was around 330 tonnes. Destination: the Shell oil terminal in Fredericia, Denmark. These transports were an important step of the expansion project of the crude oil terminal, which will receive large volumes of oil and gas from the Hejre field in a few years.

For Wagenborg, this project was a perfect opportunity to show their expertise in Factory to Foundation projects. Their scope of work involved the transportation of all eight bullets from Willebroek until installed onto foundation at the oil terminal in Fredericia.

At the manufacturers’ site in Willebroek, the tanks were loaded onto barges by RoRo (Roll on Roll off) operation. From here the transport was headed towards Rotterdam where the tanks were loaded onto our SPMTs by the Matador 3 floating sheerleg and temporarily stored onto steel supports. Transport to Fredericia was carried out by a heavy lifting ship. In the Fredericia harbor the bullets were again discharged onto our SPMTs and temporarily stored, waiting for their final transport and installation at the oil terminal.

Spectacular it would be and spectacular it was! For four days, every evening, two tanks were transported from the city harbor to the oil terminal, a 6.5 kilometer route. On Saturday the 28th of June, the first transport through the streets of Fredericia was planned. After intensive preparations, including route surveys, placing steel plates and removing all kinds of obstacles (trees, traffic lights, signs and street lights), the 16 axle lines, double configured SMPTs started rolling towards the first corner. Hundreds of spectators gathered to witness this remarkable event in the normally quiet and peaceful looking town. The route had a few tight corners through the towns’ center which made an impressive scene. The final phase of the transport was a 10% ramp, specially constructed for this project leading towards the LPG bullet area on site.

Installation at the oil terminal

At the Oil terminal, the 400 tonnes LR 1400 and the 350 tonnes CC2200 crawler cranes were put into action, both in superlift and main boom configuration. The tanks were lifted directly from the SPMT’s by the two crawlers. In a slow movement, both cranes crawled to the foundation and

lifted the tanks on their final position to the millimeter precise in pre-shaped sand beds. The whole project was executed to full satisfaction of their client and without any delays. Again a project where Wagenborg Nedlift has proved their quality performance!

“However, over the past few years, we have experienced technical difficulties

in the area of sales,“ he picked up his story. “Here in Groningen we produce anything you can suspend from a hook, including traditional standard straps and sleeves for loads of between 1 and 10 tonnes, and all Made in Holland! Within this portfolio, dealers and manufacturers have over the last few years been importing ever growing volumes of products from China. Although these products are attractively priced, they offer


lower quality. As a consequence, our turnover in the traditional markets has begun to shrink. On the other hand, we have seen growing interest in our products from the offshore market, both the oil and gas industry and the wind energy sector, partly thanks to the trend towards installing completely equipped modules and mini production platforms rather than separate components. Siemens Wind Systems, Areva, Ahlstom and Vestas are for example regular customers for our slings, as are General Electrics and Enercon. Our response was to go in search of a more effective and cost-saving alternative for steel cables and the polyester traditionally used for carrying out lifting projects. Within that framework, we began to focus our attention on the use of a manmade fibre and the production of slings in special tonnages and lengths, in other words, tailor-made solutions.

With our new Extreema slings produced from Dyneema, we are on the eve of a challenging commercial period within a niche market that we have successfully very precisely defined. Nonetheless, in terms of marketing, the introduction of this relatively revolutionary product requires a carefully considered adaptation of our communication with that market. Exactly which route we intend to follow is currently the subject of discussion with our partners located worldwide. In each country it will be they who establish direct contacts with the end user.” Numerous advantages

Dyneema offers numerous advantages in comparison with steel and polyester. Thanks to its extreme tensile strength (15 times stronger than steel by weight) and wear resistance, it is possible to lift heavy to very heavy loads with a relatively light weight and ergonomic sling. Unlike steel slings, where a whole raft of costly handling tools is needed, the compact nature of the material results in a remarkably low own weight making the slings very easy to handle. As well as guaranteeing cost savings, the low weight also ensures a safer work situation. Test

Sales manager Bert Snel explained: “Our goal for the Extreema sling that we have now produced with a breaking load of 2,500 tonnes was to allow us to determine just how far our knowledge and technology can take us, at Lift-Tex. In response, we decided to manufacture the largest possible sling using the production equipment available to us. Theoretical figures suggested that the sling could achieve a working load of 500 tonnes, but to test whether such a fabulous capacity could be achieved in practice, our CEO Luuk Calboo travelled to DNV Norway last September, where they have the largest tensile strength tester in Europe, to put our sling to the test. As the tensile testing diagram accompanying this article shows, the tests were successful. On four occasions, the sling was first brought to a pretension of 500 tonnes, and then, without breaking, further drawing pressure was applied to the point that the DNV tensile testing machine automatically switched to secure mode.” Decisive

at the earliest possible stage of a lifting project, to iron out the precise wishes and specifications. “We have not yet reached that stage,” recognised Boersma, “but we are hard at work together with our dealers, who receive constant support in the form of product training courses. Last year, for example, via our dealer in France, we supplied a number of 300 and 400-tonne Extreema slings for a lifting project off the coast of Brazil. These slings were certified both by Lloyds Register and Bureau Veritas. We are now hard at work convincing the international market of the numerous decisive advantages of a sling produced from manmade fibres. Those advantages include improved

safety, reliability and durability. Growing confidence in ‘Oleg Strashnov’

More work from oil and gas industry More than three years ago, in 2011, IHC Merwede handed over the brand-new monohull crane vessel ‘Oleg Strashnov’ to Seaway Heavy Lifting from Zoetermeer. Since that time, the innovative vessel has more than proven its considerable value in the offshore wind energy sector. However, also in the offshore oil and gas industry, the crane vessel that thanks to her unique hull shape and impressive transit speed of 14 knots is capable of very rapid transfers, is carrying out a growing number of special projects.

Business Acquisition Manager Americas & Africa, Hans van Gaalen and Project Manager Bas Zoon, both employed by Seaway Heavy Lifting are full of praise for the ‘Oleg Strashnov’, a 183 metre-long and 47 metre-wide monohull crane vessel, equipped with a 5,000-tonne crane and offering a load-carrying capacity of 8,500 tonnes. In the words of Hans van Gaalen: “The ‘Oleg Strashnov’ was built at a

quality Dutch shipyard, using the very best materials. This vessel has what is known as a dual hull design. At the top of the hull, on both sides, sponsons have been installed, each around 4.5 metres wide. During lifting work, the vessel is ballasted. When ballast is taken on board, the sponsons come into contact with the surface of the water, and the vessel is suddenly 9 metres wider,

increasing overall stability. When it is time to relocate, the ballast is simply discharged from the ‘Oleg Strashnov’. The sponsons rise above the water level, and the hull is so slim-lined that we can achieve very high sailing speeds.” Bas Zoon added: “We can even reach a top speed of 14 knots, a unique achievement for a vessel fitted with such a heavy crane.”


Another remarkable feature is that the A-frame on top of the crane can be folded down to allow the ‘Oleg Strashnov’ to pass through the Suez Canal, eradicating the need to sail all the way around Africa. Other elements that broaden the deployment capability of the vessel include the trolley block that is able to travel very quickly up the crane boom, and the speed of the ballast system. Both elements massively accelerate the speed with which the vessel can be made operational. Plenty of work

Since her delivery, the ‘Oleg Strashnov’ has had continuous employment. Bas Zoon explained: “During her first twenty days, the vessel was commissioned and mobilised. Then, between April and August, we were employed off the coast of England to carry out installation work for a wind farm. We

also installed two topsides on the related transformer platforms. Just a short time later, we received our first installation order from the oil and gas sector involving the placement of a 2,200 tonne deck for the RWE Clipper South platform operated by Shell in the British sector of the North Sea.” More and more orders from the oil and gas sector soon followed, as Zoon went on: “One special installation job was completed at the start of 2012 in Indian waters where a total of 40,000 tonnes of installation work was carried out on bridges, modules, etc. as part of the Mumbai North project. The ‘Oleg Strashnov’ also broke a heavy lift record for Seaway Heavy Lifting, by installing a 4,000-tonne topsides unit. This very critical lift was carried out using the dp system,

in a sea area subject to considerable swell. Our desire to get the job completed before the monsoon season arrived meant that all this installation work was carried out at a remarkably rapid pace.”

Highpoints

Once again in 2013, the ‘Oleg Strashnov’ achieved a major highpoint. “During this period, we were tasked with installing three wellhead decks and a living quarters for the Rasgas project, off the coast of Qatar. The decks, each weighing around 3,000 tonnes, were delivered by a heavy lifter operated by COSCO. During the entire transfer to the installation location, over a distance of 28 kilometres, each of the decks remained suspended in our crane. To make it possible to install the decks, they had to be held in a precisely horizontal position. Given that the decks had to be lifted over a series of very long piles at locations with gas wells, the task was certainly a complex one. The entire project was carried out under dp conditions. It is worth mentioning

that the project was preceded by a great deal of engineering work,” explained Bas Zoon. His colleague Hans van Gaalen continued: “We also have a fabulous engineering department in Zoetermeer that currently employs around 130 specialists. That number represents about half of the total company staff.” Also in 2013, three jackets with topsides were installed on behalf of GDF SUEZ E&P Nederland in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. Later this year and next year, the ‘Oleg Strashnov’ will be joining the Stanislav Yudin in completing a range of installation tasks as part of the Cygnus project for GDF SUEZ E&P UK in the British sector of the North Sea. Gulf of Mexico

At the start of this year, the ‘Oleg

Strashnov’ was deployed in the Gulf of Mexico for the first time. In the words of Hans van Gaalen: “We had signed a contract with Permaducto, who had been instructed to install eight jackets and eight topsides for the Kuzuma/Cantarell project in the Gulf of Mexico, on behalf of Pemex. We received the order from Permaducto to install the three heaviest topside units, weighing between 3,100 and 3,500 tonnes, together with a heavy jacket. The work took a total of 42 days.” Refurbishment

A remarkable project was also recently completed on behalf of Maersk Oil in the Tyra field in the Danish sector of the North Sea. As explained by Van Gaalen: “This was a refurbishment project that had to be carried out precisely


on a specified date. The flaring tower and a large bridge had to be removed, and a new tower and bridge installed. Alongside the transport and installation, we also had to carry out the construction work. For the transport of the bridge, we attached an outrigger frame to the side of the ‘Oleg Strashnov’.” Another major lift operation in April of this year involved the installation of the 3,300-tonne topside of the Meerwind transformer platform in the German Bight, an order from the offshore wind energy sector. Bas Zoon explained: “At present, the ‘Oleg Strashnov’ is employed for 60 per cent of her time carrying out work in the renewables sector, and 40 per cent in the oil and gas industry.

We have however seen growing confidence in the ‘Oleg Strashnov’ from the oil and gas industry. We expect in the near future that the work of the vessel will be divided 60 percent for the oil and gas sector and 40 percent for the renewables sector. Thanks to the arrival of the ‘Oleg Strashnov’, we were able to sign a global framework contract with Shell, last year, according to which our crane vessel has opened the door to the deep water installation market.” Preparation work is already being carried out for a deep water installation project, for Subsea 7. Within that project, a 500-tonne wet gas compressor station and a 300-tonne protection structure are due to be installed at a water depth of 140 metres, for the Statoil Gullfaks project.

FPSO

As well as carrying out deep water installation work, Hans van Gaalen also sees opportunities for the ‘Oleg Strashnov’ in the FPSO market. “With its crane and dp system, the vessel is ideally suited for exchanging offshore modules from FPSOs. The crane has a 5,000-tonne main hoist and a maximum lifting height of 102 metres, with an auxiliary hoist of 800 tonnes with a lifting height of 132 metres, both ideal for carrying out installation work on large FPSOs. I also foresee an excellent future when it comes to the installation of TLPs and SPAR buoys in deep water. Not only do we have the perfect vessels, but also the specialists in house, capable of thoroughly preparing and efficiently completing the necessary work.”

Close cooperation between GustoMSC and Formaco

Mega orders for high-quality forged products for drilling rigs Above all in the nineteen seventies and early nineteen eighties, numerous drilling rigs were fabricated. Clearly, after some 35 years, many of these are ready for replacement. Since that time the world demand for energy has grown explosively, and in response, new drilling rigs are also required. Added to that, drilling for oil and gas is today being undertaken in ever more extreme areas. Given the huge demand on this market, supply companies in the sector are performing very well. One of those companies is the design and engineering firm GustoMSC based in Schiedam. As well as undertaking design projects, GustoMSC subcontracts products for the associated equipment to other supply companies including Formaco Forgings & Castings. Extreme demands

“The demands currently placed on our products are indeed extreme. On the other hand, that is what helps us stand out from the market. We above all excel in designing jack-ups for deeper water of up to 175 metres. Designs like these have to be viewed and calculated like an aircraft: as light as possible while remaining sufficiently strong.

We also supply a range of associated equipment including jacking, skidding and fixation systems. The jacking systems for example include pinions that travel up and down sets of racks to raise and lower the drilling rig. The fixation systems are used to hold the drilling rig definitively in its location. As far as possible, we make use of the best still-weldable steel,

in other words steel with a minimum yield point of 690 N/mm2. For cast pinions, even better material is required. This fact imposes severe demands on the forges needed to manufacture high-quality products of this kind. Such products must be 100% reliable. Only suppliers capable of meeting our severe demands are even considered,� explained Theo Badenberg.

Formaco

One of those suppliers is Formaco Forgings & Castings, a company with which GustoMSC started working last year with an order for several hundred pinions, generating turnover worth several tens of millions of euros. According to Theo Badenberg, an intermediary and supply broker for high-quality forced and cast parts, in particular for the offshore and maritime sector, Formaco has

demonstrated its capability as a sound partner for GustoMSC. “However, the process was carefully planned. Following a thorough preparation and quotation stage, we issued our first order in 2013 for 108 pinions for 2 drilling rigs. Formaco contacted the Italian forger Metalcam, and provided full documentation and supervision of the forging process at the Italian company, as well as all the subsequent production stages such as post-finishing

and heat-treatment at two other Italian suppliers. Formaco has demonstrated that it is an expert partner, easily capable of tackling major projects of this kind. As a consequence, we decided to also place a series of subsequent orders with Formaco.” GustoMSC

With a track record of almost 200 built designs for mobile offshore platforms for oil and gas production and for the production of offshore wind energy, the independent design and engineering firm GustoMSC, in Schiedam, is one of the leading players in the world. As Theo Badenberg explained: “We sell our designs for these units worldwide to large shipyards. To complete the work, at our own offices we have some 150 permanent and 50 insourced engineers and designers, on the books. We have no own production department. In other words, we outsource everything, by which we mean all the equipment belonging to the jack-ups we design. We believe that with Formaco we have found an excellent partner that will help us grow further. Because we certainly are growing; we are currently even considering transferring to new, larger premises,” concluded a satisfied Theo Badenberg.

A recent issue of The Economist reported on the Scottish referendum on September 18th, when Scotland will vote on independence. One of the major questions concerning the referendum is the fate of Britain´s North Sea oilfields, most of which are located on the Scottish area of the Crown Estate and serviced from Aberdeen. At Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference on 28 and 29 October 2014 in Amsterdam, exploration and production in the North Sea area is a prominent session theme.

The technical session on North Sea exploration and production this year focuses on the changing playing field. As ‘big oil’ is retreating from the North Sea, more room is becoming available for smaller, independent E&P companies. This session hosts experts like Alexander Kemp, professor in petroleum economics at University of Aberdeen Business School, who is seen as one of the top influencers in the UK North Sea oil and gas industry and Simon Lunn, technical director of Hansa Hydrocarbons, an important new player in the North Sea playing field. These and other speakers will discuss what is being spent this year on drilling, how new players expect to deliver value and what governments of countries bordering the North Sea do to establish an attractive E&P climate. Maintenance, well plugging and abandonment

Relevant to both the North Sea and other offshore producing regions are

the sessions on offshore maintenance services and on well plugging and abandonment. Many offshore platforms in use today are exceeding their intended lifespan, leading to challenges for operators to keep the equipment running. In this session John Alkemade, Director EMEA at Asset Performance Networks, specialist in offshore turnaround practices, will shine a light on the drivers of offshore turnaround performance and on the benchmarks of best offshore turnaround practices. Johan Ferket, Stork Technical Services, Harm-Jan Smit, Stork Technical Services representing AJS and Tobias Rosenbaum, DNV GL Oil & Gas will, among other things, discuss asset related risks management, asset performance improvement and asset life extension and cover changes in regulations, in particular related to the offshore safety directive. When the productive life of a field has definitely come to an end, a different

process kicks in. Governments and regulatory agencies are informing the offshore oil and gas industry that unproductive wells must be adequately sealed to prevent potential environmental threats. In the North Sea area alone over 1,000 wells have to be abandoned. The session ‘well plugging and abandonment’, organized in cooperation with the Netherlands Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Association (NOGEPA) and joined by specialists from Schlumberger and Total E&P Netherlands, looks at the regulatory framework for abandonment as well as at cost effective technical solutions. Offshore Vessels

Together with the Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners, Offshore Energy will feature a session on the rules and regulations for offshore service vessels carrying more than 12 passengers. Offshore Energy again offers a recurring session on new offshore vessels, this year

in cooperation with the Port of Rotterdam. Roland van Assche, Director Bulk Cargo & Shipping will chair the session, which presents the latest in offshore ship concepts, design and construction. Among the speakers are Edward Heerema, founder of Allseas, who will present an update on the Pieter Schelte. Maurizio Collu, lecturer at Cranfield University, will present a new concept of AAMVs or aerodynamically alleviated marine vehicles. Internationalization

The Offshore Energy Exhibition is living up to its ambitions and continues to grow. More than 10,000 visitors and 500 exhibitors will come together at Amsterdam RAI in October 2014. Another ambition is internationalization. Every year the percentage of international visitors has been growing faster than the relative growth of the exhibition which means that the majority of the new visitors comes from outside the Netherlands which is in line with the objectives. Last year a Chinese pavilion made its entry as the first country pavilion in Offshore Energy’s history. Czech Republic will be second starting in 2014. On top of these pavilions and many other international companies exhibiting individually, international companies freed space in their agenda to visit the show. The French trade organization GEP-AFTP will participate with at stand and UK Trade & Investment visits the show as part of a trade mission. In total more than 100 companies from outside the Netherlands will be part of the show as an exhibitor. Honorary title

IHC Merwede to become Royal IHC His Majesty the King has awarded the honorary title of Koninklijk (Royal) to IHC Merwede. In a special ceremony today, the Mayor of Sliedrecht, Mr van Hemmen, presented this accolade to IHC Merwede’s CEO, Bram Roelse. In light of this honour, the company has decided to change its name to Royal IHC and will also include the royal crown in its revised corporate identity.

The Royal title is an award granted to companies or organisations that meet certain conditions. To qualify, the nominated company must have been in existence for at least 100 years and should have prestige with regard to its image, size and reliability. It must be of national importance to and have prominence in the Netherlands – preferably with an international outlook – and the size of the company, the number of employees and its annual turnover are also taken into account. History

In 2013, IHC Merwede had been in existence for 325 years. The predecessors of the Kinderdijk shipyards, L Smit & Zoon and J & K Smit, were already active in the 17th Century, while the other four IHC shipyards were involved from the late 19th Century (Gusto in Schiedam and Conrad in Haarlem) or the beginning of the 20th Century (Verschure in Amsterdam and De Klop in Sliedrecht). Finally, in 1943 the six shipyards – specialising in the construction of dredging equipment

and tin mills – decided to a form of collaboration, Industrieele Handels Combinatie (IHC) Holland. The presentation of the Royal title took place at the grand opening of IHC Merwede’s exposition at the National Dredging Museum in Sliedrecht, which – together with an exposition about the company in the Maritime Museum Rotterdam which will run until 23 November this year. The Sliedrecht exhibition (IHC Merwede: yards with a reputation) focuses primarily on the six shipyards, their products and people. The Rotterdam display (Hi-tec Dutch maritime) highlights the innovative contribution that IHC Merwede has made towards the welfare of man and society over the decades. This is shown by the impact of the company

on key social developments, such as population growth, increasing world trade, growing energy consumption and the spiralling demand for minerals. New name and logo

IHC Merwede’s CEO Bram Roelse says: “Obviously we are extremely proud of receiving this distinguished title – so much so that we have decided to change our company name to Royal IHC and add the royal crown to our revised logo. In this way, we have reverted the name back to the roots of our wonderful company, which now has more than 3,000 employees. “Merwede was added to IHC in 2005 after the merger between the two companies, but we feel that the new name matches the current need for projecting one company to the outside world and is also easier to pronounce on an international basis. The title and name symbolise the character of this company, in which keywords such as internationalisation, innovation, pride, passion and dedication have played a very important role over the past centuries.”

Surface Jet Pump (SJP)

Detailed design NAM L9FF Eductor project awarded to KCI Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) is planning to extend and optimize the L9 production, located in the Dutch sector of the North Sea, and has contracted KCI for the detailed design of the L9 FF/FD back pressure reduction project. NAM is a 50/50 joint venture between Shell and Exxon Mobil. KCI already had early involvement in this project as NAM awarded the FEED study for this project to KCI last year.

Schiedam-based engineering company KCI was selected because of their specific experience with similar offshore projects. KCI has integrated Jet Pumps (JPs) for condensate injection to export pipelines and also studied the concept of using Surface Jet Pumps for boosting gas in several projects. The concept selection of

The satellite platforms feed production to L9FF via a 20km 16” pipeline and a 10km 6” pipeline, respectively. The L9FF wells are currently producing via a 2-stage compressor. This compressor is driven by an 11 MW gas turbine and has a capacity of 2.5 to 3.0 million Nm3/d.

To prevent the FF wells from backing out in 2-3 years’ time, an eductor or technically speaking Surface Jet Pump (SJP) can be installed in the recycle of the compressor. An SJP uses the high pressure gas stream to boost a low pressure gas source and medium pressure gas can enter the compressor. In addition, an SJP requires little maintenance because it has no rotating parts, and it does not consume electricity. This concept has already been installed at NAM’s AWG (Ameland) platform where it operates to satisfaction.

Flows and wells

A brief overview of the current systems and planned modifications: The wells at satellites FA/FB were producing in free flow. Subsequently they are being produced through a compressor, which could result in a back out of the FF wells. Also the M7 monotower is connected to the compressor. In 2014 three new wells are being drilled at the FA satellite and will be produced in free flow through the 16” pipeline. It is expected that these wells are fully operational by 2015. At that moment the existing wells at FA/FB will no longer produce via the compressor and will be backed out due to the high pipeline backpressure. At that moment in time the compressor becomes available again for the FF wells.

The SJP on L9FF will become part of the overall gas production system. The L9FF platform already has a

compressor skid. The SJP skid, measuring (LxW) 10x7 m, will be placed on top of the existing compressor skid. KCI is currently working on the design of this skid in which the SJP, two silencers and piping will be integrated. Also the selection process for the skid fabricator and other materials has been started up. Project challenges
