CLOSE HOUSE | Welcome
WELCOME TO CLOSE HOUSE...
W
elcome to the 2022 edition of Close House magazine. This year will be my 18th here and along with our team - some of whom have been here as long as I have - I look forward to another successful year of welcoming golfers, guests, diners and members to our club. In 2021 we marked the 10th birthday of the Lee Westwood Colt Course, the No.19 clubhouse and our relationship with our attached professional, Lee. What a 10 years we’ve had! We’ve hosted two British Masters events - in 2017 with tens of thousands of spectators and 2020 with just me and a few of our staff watching on - as well as hundreds of amazing charity days, members events, off-course events, and so much more… the time really has flown. The big birthday gave me a chance to reflect on what we have achieved so far. I’m incredibly proud of our team and what they have created. I had no idea the scale of what I’d taken on back when I was handed the keys, and none of it would have been possible without all of our team. I look forward to seeing all of them develop further in the years ahead. Development and investment have never stopped here. Since the Colt Course opened, we have remodelled
the Filly Course, enhanced our industry-leading PGA Academy with new technology, continued to invest in our facilities on and off the golf courses, and ensured Close House lives up to its reputation. I have so much fun tweaking and adding to the estate, and this will certainly continue in the years to come. So much of our reputation has been built by Lee Westwood. When Lee opened the Colt Course in May 2011, I had no idea we’d have such a strong association 10 years later. Thank you, Lee, I look forward to many more years working together. One final thank you to all who have become members of our club, visited, played the golf courses, practised at the Academy, stayed with us, dined with us, helped raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity, attended our events, and helped us put Close House on the UK’s golfing map. After nearly 18 years, I still love spending time here talking to golfers and guests, and playing and relaxing on and off the golf courses - I hope you continue to choose to spend time with us too. Finally - mark Monday September 19 on your calendar - when our biggest charity golf day will return with some of the country’s best-known celebrities taking to our fairways. Sir Graham Wylie

MASTER OF THE HOUSE Lee Westwood reflects on his 2021 season, and looks ahead to the new year at Close House and competing in the world’s biggest events
F
or Lee Westwood, 2021 brought new challenges and opportunities, a much-delayed wedding, and a recordequalling Ryder Cup appearance. It also brought the chance to continue his successful career across the globe, and he will begin his 29th season as a professional golfer inside the top 40 in the world rankings. Lee competed in all four majors in 2021 making three cuts including a T46 finish in the delayed 149th Open Championship at Royal St George’s - and picked up second place finishes at The Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players in back-to-back weeks in March. “Starting 2021 with second place finishes at Bay Hill and TPC Sawgrass was great,” says Lee as he begins his preparations for this season at home in the North East. “I didn’t quite reach those highs in the rest of the year, but it was good to earn a lot of World Ranking points on two excellent courses. Those results set me up for the season and it was great to be able to play in all four majors and the events I wanted to be involved in.” One of the only golfers to have won tournaments on five continents, Lee also continued his international travel in 2021 with events in Europe, the Middle East and the US. “I still enjoy playing all over the world,” he says. “I didn’t play in Asia last season, which I
8 www.closehouse.com
missed, and I played more golf in the US than I normally would. “As I’ve gotten older I’ve played fewer tournaments, but I played more than 30 events in the last 14 months, which was far too much. I felt the effects on my body and have only played once since the Ryder Cup because I needed time to recover. “I’ve always played all over the world and while it gets harder as I get older, I can’t complain as I’ve been very fortunate to continue travelling these last two seasons.” Away from the golf course, Lee also got married in the summer of 2021, tying the knot with Helen in Las Vegas after several delays to their plans. “The wedding out in Las Vegas was great,” he says. “We didn’t want to wait any longer and tied the knot out in Vegas before enjoying our honeymoon at the US Open - though we may need to have a real honeymoon soon.” While Helen is regularly out on tour with Lee caddying, she also shares the duties with Lee’s son, Sam, who is attending Newcastle University and is a member of Close House. “I enjoy having either Helen or Sam on the bag and it works really well,” Lee adds. Sam took his dad’s bag in the biggest golf event of 2021 - the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. That week, Lee played his

11th Ryder Cup, matching Sir Nick Faldo’s all-time appearance record. In Europe’s losing effort, he earned a singles point - defeating Harris English - to take his personal tally of Ryder Cup points to 24. “When I played my first one in 1997, partnering Sir Nick Faldo on the first two days, I was over the moon to play in one Ryder Cup. I never thought I’d end up playing in 11 of them and have my eyes on playing more. It’s a lovely record to tie and it means even more when it’s Nick’s record. “I played ok at Whistling Straits and it was nice to win my singles match. Unfortunately, we didn’t win. We didn’t play well enough against a strong American side - they didn’t give us a chance. But, Sam loved every minute of it. It was a great experience for 10 www.closehouse.com
both of us, being able to walk the fairways together. Very few people get to share that in an event as big as the Ryder Cup.” While Lee will celebrate his 49th birthday in April and had been a bookies’ favourite to captain the Ryder Cup team in 2023, he has set his sights on continuing his Ryder Cup story as a player in Rome. “None of us are getting any younger, so I may as well give myself my best chance to qualify for the next one. Putting myself forward as captain wasn’t going to give me the best chance to make the team. It’s a full-time job and right now I’m inside the top 50 in the world and contending in tournaments. You’ve got to give yourself the best chance possible to play while you’ve got the opportunity.”
CLOSE HOUSE | Lee Westwood
Lee is also aiming to continue his long record of success around the world and maintain his position among the world’s best golfers into his fourth decade as a professional. “I’m looking forward to getting the season started. I’m hoping to get off to a decent start in the desert before heading off to the US as we build up to The Masters. “I always look forward to The Masters, it’s such a special week. People build up to watching it and I certainly look forward to playing in it. The 150th Open Championship at St Andrews will also be a massive occasion. It’s always nice to get back to the Home of Golf, there’s a great buzz in the town when we’re there. “Looking further ahead, I just want to enjoy the next few years as much as possible and do my own thing. Playing well will allow me to choose where and when I want to play, and from there we’ll see how things go.” For more than 10 years, Lee has called Close House home. Since officially opening the Colt Course in 2011, he has seen the club develop into a two-time tour venue. “I love the way Close House is progressing and the way the golf courses are maturing,” he says. “Everything is moving in the right direction and I’m proud to be part of the club.” Since his first visit, Lee has made the North East home and relaxes and practises at Close House between events. He also plays here regularly, spends time with members on golf days and delivers golf clinics throughout the year. “I love spending time at Close House. I’ll chat to members and visitors when I’m at the Academy or in the clubhouse, and it’s always nice to go up. The facilities are great and I have everything I need to work on my game. It’s also relaxed and the people in the North East are a friendly bunch. It’s fantastic to see how much people enjoy spending time at the club and that’s something Sir Graham and the team should be very proud of.” Lee will return to international competition this season in the Middle East before competing in the biggest events in the US and Europe, while also making time to relax at Close House in-between. www.closehouse.com 11

CLOSE HOUSE | Meet the captain
CAPTAIN’S LOG With Dave Armstrong Close House captain 2019-22
B
eing captain of Close House is a tremendous honour and to be able to do the job for three years is a unique, if unexpected, achievement. I’ve enjoyed the task as much as I’ve been able to in the last two years, and 2022 is sure to be a year to remember as we finally celebrate the way we always planned to. Captain’s Day is sure to be a highlight - save the date for July 23 and remember it’s also my birthday! The day will showcase everything Close House does so well and I can’t wait to welcome members and friends to the event. I will also be hosting a charity day on May 20 in aid of North East-based charity If U Care Share - a cause close to my heart. The day promises to be very special with Lee Westwood joining us and some big surprises planned. We also have another action-packed year ahead for our teams. I’m hoping to see our men’s team go one step further in 2022 and pick up some silverware after missing out by just one point in both the league and cup competitions in 2021. I also look forward to seeing the junior and ladies’ teams continue their success. Personally, I’m also hoping to continue my good form from last season and collect some more prize money in the club events. To be a figurehead for the club I joined as a founder member - number 18 for those who remember back that far - is the best job in the world. There is no club like ours, the relaxed environment is perfectly complemented by the stellar service and presentation, and it continues to be a pleasure to welcome guests here. To have watched the club develop under the leadership of Sir Graham and his talented team has been a pleasure and I look forward to enjoying it with members and guests in the year to come. Enjoy your golf and enjoy spending time at Close House see you out there…

he Junior Masters returns this summer with nine qualifying events across England and Scotland ahead of the final at Close House in October. The age categories for the event are 12 and under, 15 and under and 18 and under. The final will take place over the Colt Course at Close House on October 27 with up to 81 players taking part. Close House managing director Jonathan Lupton said: “We’re really excited to host the Junior Masters for a fourth time in 2022 after a two-year break due to the pandemic. “The idea for the event came from Lee Westwood and has really been embraced by clubs and juniors. We’re excited to see more players than ever before, from even further afield, competing for the trophy this year. “A huge thank you to PING for supporting the event this year, and to Lee for his continued support of the programme.” The first winner of the Junior Masters was

OUR HOME FROM HOME Chis and Belinda Gowland share why they choose to spend time together at Close House
W
hen it comes to the full Close House membership experience, Chris and Belinda Gowland can offer a unique perspective. After joining the club in 2018, experienced golfer Chris introduced Belinda to the game and with the help of PGA professional Sally Hinton’s ladies coaching sessions, she was soon hooked too. “I’d never played golf before and was just visiting to walk the course with Chris,” says Belinda. “The estate is so beautiful; I’d visit a lot just to walk in the grounds. Then Chris got
“I love the atmosphere. The service is superb and we can spend as much time here when we’re not playing golf as we do playing” me some lessons, I took to it quickly and I’ve loved it since.” That love for the game has led to Chris and Belinda spending more and more of their time here - even playing 72 holes in one day to raise money for Cancer Research. “I’d been a member of other clubs and 16 www.closehouse.com
had heard a lot of good things about Close House. I made the move across when I had the chance to spend more time working on my game,” Chris explains. “I’ve improved since I joined having done some lessons and spent so much time playing. I miss the days when I got a couple of shots on some of the hard holes, but it is fun when your scores are getting better,” adds Chris, who has also made his first hole-in-one on the ninth on the Filly Course since joining. Meanwhile, Belinda has worked hard on her game too, reducing her handicap to 25 thanks to Sally and some expert advice from Lee Westwood. “We’ve had so many amazing experiences here,” adds Belinda. “Winning the Shepherd Offshore Trophy was a great feeling, and I love seeing my name on the trophy. I’ve also had the chance to attend a golf day with Lee and he helped me with my putting. That was an experience I couldn’t imagine having anywhere else. Whenever I see him, he asks how my game is - he clearly enjoys spending his time here with the members.” The couple visit Close House as often as four times per week, playing and relaxing here together and with friends while also being part of the club’s regular events. “We’re not competitive when we play together,” says Chris. “We keep it fun,” adds Belinda, “though we do have an occasional fourball game with the boys against the girls, which can get a little more competitive.” Born in South Africa, Belinda moved to the North East in her 20s and worked in Newcastle for TSG. As well as playing golf, she is a passionate fundraiser for local charities. Meanwhile, Teessider Chris studied chemistry at Newcastle University before embarking on a successful career in business. Today he combines chairmanship roles with Edinburgh-based Ant Workshop and North

East-based XR Therapeutics with his passion for golf. “We’re very luck to spend so much time together, playing a sport we get so much out of,” adds Chris. “We’ve travelled and played some amazing courses, but we always love coming back to Close House,” adds Belinda. “Membership here is a lifestyle. I enjoyed coming here before I played, but it’s even better when you can make full use of the fabulous facilities. It’s such an easy place to enjoy your time - there’s no old-fashioned rules, women can play when they want to and in groups of their choosing, and everyone can relax and feel part of what’s going on. The service is personal and it makes it a pleasure for us to be here.” “The service is so far from the norm in golf and it’s a massive part of the Close House
experience,” adds Chris. “Everyone here is so relaxed and they’re all enjoying themselves that spreads through you every time you visit.” Both Chris and Belinda enjoy sharing the experience with their friends and family as often as they can, and think of Close House as their home from home. “The friendliness and the beauty of the location are fabulous,” says Belinda. “Sally’s drop-in sessions for ladies are the perfect introduction to the sport. From there, just work your way through trying the golf courses. It’s a lovely way to spend four hours and you’ll meet some fantastic people who love the sport and are so easy to get on with.” “I love the atmosphere,” adds Chris. “The service is superb and we spend a lot of time here when we’re not playing golf too. The time we spend here is so rewarding.” www.closehouse.com 17

A YEAR TO REMEMBER
Close House member and England girls’ international Maggie Whitehead recaps the best year of her young golfing career so far
I
n the four years since Maggie Whitehead last featured in CH magazine, she has made some big steps forward in her golfing career. Now 15 years old, Maggie is an established member of the England girls’ squad. She also played in her first professional event in 2021 - the Rose Ladies Series at The Berkshire - where she led the field late in her round before finishing in a tie for sixth place. She also competed in the pro am at the AIG Women’s Open at Carnoustie alongside Martin Slumbers, chief executive of The R&A,
“I missed having a full season of competitive golf in 2020 so getting back to it was a lot of fun. To have my best season so far was amazing” world No. 14 Jessica Korda, and broadcaster Eilidh Barbour. In national tournaments in 2021, Maggie finished inside the top-10 in every event and picked up the biggest win of her career todate at the English Girls (U16) Open Amateur Championship at Morecambe. 24 www.closehouse.com
“2021 was my best season so far,” says Maggie. “I felt some pressure going into the last tournament, knowing I could achieve a top-10 finish in every event. I’m really proud to have achieved it – it’s been a busy season and a really good one. “I missed having a full season of competitive golf in 2020 so getting back to it was a lot of fun. To have my best season so far was amazing. Winning at Morecambe was really special and representing GB&I in the Junior Vagliano Trophy was incredible. Playing in the Rose Ladies Series alongside the professionals was so much fun and I got some lovely messages from some of the pros afterwards,” she adds. When she’s not competing against some of the best female golfers in the world, Maggie can often be found working on her game. “I love coming back to Close House when I’m at home. Everyone here is so supportive and so many people follow what I’m doing and ask how things are going when I come back. “The welcome here is so special, I’ve always felt like part of the club and enjoyed being here as much as I can between tournaments. Having great practice facilities is so important when you’re working on your game as much as we have to, and I really enjoy practising here. I’ve got access to everything I could need - there’s nothing more I could ask for when it comes to practising.” At just 15, there is a lot ahead of Maggie. In 2022, her focus is on getting through her GCSE exams before heading out for another busy summer of golf. “This year is going to be really busy with lots of events to fit in around my exams. I want to defend the English Girls title and I’d really like to play some international events, including some for England, if that’s possible. After that, I’ll see what opportunities come up next.”

THE LEE WESTWOOD COLT COURSE
Par 71 • blue tees 6,974 • white tees 6,404 yards yellow tees 5,824 yards • red tees 5,133 yards
T
wice a host of the British Masters, the Colt Course has won a national reputation since it opened in 2011. Continued investment - including minor alterations, new tee boxes and green complex expansions ahead of the 2017 British Masters - have seen the golf course continue to evolve since it was laid out by New Zealander Scott Macpherson. The Colt is overseen by golf course & estates manager Brian Clark, who has continued to refine the challenge for players of all abilities and hone this spectacular piece of land further as the course matures.
30 www.closehouse.com
The 6,974-yard course is set against the stunning backdrop of the Tyne Valley, which is best seen from the highest points of the course, including the third green and 13th tee box. Its primary defences include the typography of the valley setting, its penal bunkering shaped in the style of legendary architect Harry Colt, and the sloping, firm green complexes with their vast approach and run off areas. A golfing challenge for even the world’s best players, there are few better places to test your game and take in the spectacular Northumbrian landscape…
CLOSE HOUSE | Colt Course
HOLE 1, PAR 4, 435 YARDS A long par four, the tee shot at the first must stay left of the bunker on the right side to make the most of fairway’s contours and stay in the short grass. The best approach to the green is from the left side of the fairway, where you will get an unobstructed view of the putting surface. HOLE 2, PAR 4, 392 YARDS The second plays uphill and your tee shot must avoid the multiple bunkers to the left and right sides - though there is a generous fairway up there. The green is one of the most undulating on the course.
The Colt Course’s green complexes are demanding, and a wide variety of short game shots are required to keep your score under control. A session on the practice green at the PGA Academy ahead of your round is highly recommended CADDY’S TIP
HOLE 3, PAR 4, 350 YARDS The third offers both risk and reward. Played downwind, some players will be able to reach the green if they can make it past the bunkers - one some 30 yards short and another at the front edge. The green features two distinct tiers and affords breathtaking views across the Tyne Valley. HOLE 4, PAR 3, 221 YARDS The toughest and longest of the Colt Course’s par threes, the fourth often plays against the wind. You must avoid the bunkers at the front of the green at all costs - missing to the left side is safest.
HOLE 5, PAR 4, 398 YARDS The fifth is played straight uphill with three bunkers protecting the fairway. The amphitheatre-like green is set into a hill and has two main sections. Distance control is made tougher by the uphill second shot to the green. HOLE 6, PAR 4, 445 YARDS The sixth plays downhill and the fairway is more generous than it appears from the tee. Watch out for the particularly deep bunker at the front right corner of the green. www.closehouse.com 31
CLOSE HOUSE | Colt Course
HOLE 12, PAR 3, 198 YARDS The par three 12th requires a solid long iron or hybrid to reach the green beyond the front bunkers. This hole is very tough in the wind. HOLE 13, PAR 4, 462 YARDS Three large bunkers to the right of the fairway and two more at the front and right of the green defend a good birdie chance. Take an iron from the tee if you want to avoid all the trouble – though you can get close to the green with your driver and the right bounce.
HOLE 7, PAR 5, 525 YARDS You must plot your route up the hill as bunkers are scattered on both sides of the fairway. A short iron approach minimises the risk of finding the bunker at the front of the green. HOLE 8, PAR 4, 477 YARDS You’ll find some of the best views of the Tyne Valley from this tee box. Favour the left side to make the most of the downslope. The second shot is difficult to get close as the green is protected by water and three bunkers. HOLE 9, PAR 3, 206 YARDS The ninth is one of the most difficult holes on the course and is played to a green which is narrow from front to back - particularly on the left side beyond the bunker. HOLE 10, PAR 5, 497 YARDS Played uphill, you must avoid the bunker to the left of the fairway. The green can be tough to find as the contours tend to send the ball back down into the hollows short. HOLE 11, PAR 4, 399 YARDS At the highest point on the course, the tee shot at the 11th is one of the tightest. The best approach is from around 140 yards and missing to the right spells disaster. 32 www.closehouse.com
HOLE 14, PAR 3, 175 YARDS The 14th is one of the most picturesque holes on the Colt. The bunker at the front of the green is deep and must be avoided. HOLE 15, PAR 4, 373 YARDS Starting behind a lake, the tee shot at the 15th is one of the hardest on the course. Aim at the tallest trees in the distance to find the fairway. Par is always a good score here. HOLE 16, PAR 4, 457 YARDS The 16th turns sharply to the left and is played through a corridor of trees. You can use the slope on the left of the green to aid finding it, though avoid the right side as a large bunker protects the length of the putting surface. HOLE 17, PAR 5, 526 YARDS A very good birdie chance, the 17th is one of the easiest holes on the course. A wide fairway slopes from right to left and there is a copse of oak trees to avoid with the second shot, though the slopes help feed the ball onto the putting surface. HOLE 18, PAR 4, 443 YARDS A demanding finishing hole with a fairway bunker to the left and a ha-ha wall guarding the right side. The green is protected by a bunker and ha-ha wall at the front, and the old ice lake hugs the right side to present one of the toughest approach shots of the round.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF SUCCESS Take a look back at the first 10 years of the Close House story
C
lose House celebrated its 10th birthday on May 10, 2021 - marking a decade since Lee Westwood, then the world’s number one golfer, officially opened the Colt Course and No.19. Having bought the club from Newcastle University, Close House owner Sir Graham Wylie has overseen the transformation and expansion of the estate since 2005. While the official opening in 2011 stands out as a highlight, the club has played host to innumerable major moments. The pinnace for many came with the hosting of the British Masters tournament in 2017 - with Lee welcoming some of the biggest names in European golf including Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter to the North East. The club hosted the event for a second time in 2020 and has also been a host

venue for the European Seniors and EuroPro tours, as well as multiple local tournaments. “We are very proud of everything we have achieved at Close House in the past decade,” said Sir Graham on marking the 10th birthday. “The club has become a real focal point for golf in the North East, and being chosen twice as host venue for the British Masters is testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in making the club a success.” Lee added: “Everyone here can be incredibly proud of all they have achieved since 2011. It has been a pleasure to represent Close House as its ambassador over the years and it is amazing to see how it has developed.” Here are just some of the major moments from the last decade…

THE PERFECT DRIVE Dave Stuart, general sales manager for BMW and MINI at Lloyd Newcastle, discusses the rewards of corporate partnership with Close House
T
he worlds of golf and business crossover a great deal, and in the North East of England business discussions which turn to golf quickly turn to Close House. In the 10-plus years since No.19 and the Colt Course opened, Close House has become synonymous with business - a player in its own right and the place to mix work and relaxation. Lloyd Newcastle is a long-standing part of the family of corporate members and has built a steadfast relationship with Close House over the last decade. For Dave Stuart, general sales manager for BMW and MINI at Lloyd Newcastle and an avid golfer, the relationship between the two businesses remains a special one. “I’ve personally been a member for four years, but Lloyd was one of the first businesses to take up membership,” Dave explains. “When I moved to Newcastle in 2017, I started to take golf more seriously - with access to Close House it seemed a sensible thing to do!” A 19-handicapper, Dave has worked on his game with Sally Hinton at the PGA Academy and relishes the chance to spend time here on and off the golf courses. “Close House offers the same experience I want people to have when they visit our
42 www.closehouse.com
dealership. The people here make the experience comfortable and create a sense of being in a home from home. It’s an important detail and it allows everyone who comes here to relax and take it all in.” As well as enjoying his own golf, Dave plays an active role in Close House’s corporate networking events too. “The Close House team puts a lot of work into facilitating connections between members with formal and informal events,” he says. “The business environment, with more than 50 member organisations, is second to none in the region. “Our partnership has grown over the years and our three annual golf days are incredibly popular events. Personally, it puts a bit of pressure on my golf, but they are highlights in our year. We also sponsor the club’s knockout tournaments for members, with limited success on our part so far, and we have the beautiful BMW 7 Series on-site as well. “Our business isn’t just about selling cars - it’s about creating long-term partnerships and being trusted to offer what your customer needs. Close House also offers just that.” You’ll find Dave at Close House regularly and Lloyd Newcastle will again be hosting its golf days this season - though you’ll need to visit the dealership to see more of the stunning BMW M3 Competition pictured.

T
he Filly Course is set on much the same ground as the first set of golf holes at Close House, which were laid out in the 1960s. The layout has been reconfigured several times since then and today provides a perfect partner to the Colt Course, which is designed to test the very best golfers. Following the launch of the Colt Course in 2011, the Filly was redesigned by New Zealand-born architect Scott Macpherson the man behind the Colt. Working closely with attached professional Lee Westwood, Scott rerouted the golf course to create two nine-hole loops returning to the clubhouse to allow for quick evening rounds and offer those with less time to play an opportunity to enjoy a visit to Close House.
48 www.closehouse.com
Set out at the foot of the Tyne Valley, the climb up the hillside at the seventh hole is rewarded with the spectacular views from the tee box of the signature eighth hole - a short par four played dramatically downhill to a green perched beyond a lake. The bunkers on the Filly Course, particularly those flanking the fairways, are positioned to test the best players while presenting a playable challenge to the shorter hitter. Meanwhile, water is used sparingly to add challenge and drama. A fun and challenging layout, the Filly is perfectly paired with its big brother at the top of the valley. Its fairways and greens are generous, though the best players still find it difficult to overpower the golf course and master its many challenges.

Every visitor to the Academy can make use of the same facilities as Lee - from the industry-leading TrackMan and SAM PuttLab technology used in the teaching and fitting suites to the Toptracer system (upgraded for 2022) available in each of the 10 covered, floodlit driving range bays - which takes practising your golf to the next level with ball tracking software allowing you to record every shot, challenge friends to scoring games, and

An England international, Sally attended Missouri State University on a golf scholarship, rewriting the record books in her four years there and later becoming part of the school’s hall of fame. Sally followed in the footsteps of her father, grandfather and uncle in joining the PGA. In 2018, she was awarded Advanced Professional Status, reinforcing her reputation as a leading regional coach. As part of her role at Close House, she coaches the Northumberland County Girls and Ladies teams, and is also part of England Golf’s Girls Golf Rocks programme, which encourages more girls to try the game for the first time. Sally’s teaching philosophy “I avoid the notion of one swing for all and prefer a more holistic approach, treating everyone as an individual and working to their strengths” Sally’s go-to club “My PING G425 Max driver (10.5-degree, Alta CB Regular) is always in my bag. It’s super forgiving and always gives my game a good start - it’s guaranteed to keep me in play on the fairways” Sally’s golf hero “Annika Sörenstam, she dominated women’s golf in the 90s and 00s and is considered one of the best female golfers in history”

CLOSE HOUSE | Yearling Course
THE YEARLING COURSE
Experience the golf course for the first time or sharpen your short game on Close House’s par three course
A
fun place to practise or try the game for the very first time, the Yearling par three course is a fun-packed, shorter way to enjoy golf. Designed and constructed to the same high standards as the full-length Filly and Colt courses, the Yearling features nine holes ranging from 35-70 yards – each featuring a mix of challenging bunkers, rough and hazards to help experienced players work on their short game
and give youngsters a chance to try a proper golf course built to their size. The Yearling is also a popular tool used by the team of PGA professionals at Close House – helping players with their pitching, chipping and putting or giving junior group lessons on everything from bunker play to understanding the rules of the game. The Yearling Course is open to members throughout the year. www.closehouse.com 59

CLOSE HOUSE | Meet the team
ASK ME ANYTHING With membership manager Tom Daly
H
aving spent four years working in various roles at Close House, Tom Daly has moved into the role of membership manager. Tom, from Newcastle, began his Close House journey in No.19 before joining the sales and events team and progressing into his new role at the end of 2021. Many members will already know Tom, but here’s more about the man tasked with making sure every Close House member makes the most of the experience... Tell us about your golfing background... My grandad was a scratch golfer and he got me hitting plastic balls around the garden from an early age. As a junior, I played at two clubs in Gosforth and spent a lot of time on my golf before heading off to Lancaster University to study geography. You’ve been part of the Close House team for four years, have you enjoyed it so far? It’s been fantastic - the team atmosphere is brilliant here. I’ve done a little bit of everything in my previous roles and covered a lot of different areas, which has given me a great understanding of the club and what goes into making it a success.
62 www.closehouse.com
What’s the best part of working here? As a golfer, there’s nowhere better - the facilities are the best in the region. It’s also great to work somewhere people enjoy themselves - that’s wonderful to be part of every day. And what’s the biggest challenge? Our membership is diverse and we cater to a lot of different requirements. Balancing those and ensuring everyone is able to make the most of their membership and enjoy their time at Close House is a really important part of my job. What’s been your favourite moment at Close House so far? My first visit was for the 2017 British Masters as a tour volunteer. That week was incredible and I fell in love with the place. I’ve wanted to spend more time at Close House since then and I’m very lucky to work here today. What’s the question everyone asks when they meet you? Are you the Olympic diver or related to ‘that’ Tom Daly? I’m not, but I’m happy to share my name with such a successful athlete.

FINE DETAILS With golf course and estates manager Brian Clark
I
n 2022, I’ll celebrate my 18th year at Close House - and what an 18 years it has been. The estate has changed beyond all recognition since I arrived and while some may be bored after nearly 18 years in the same job, I love coming to work every day. The golf courses continue to evolve and mature. On the Colt Course, it is remarkable to think back to walking in the fields to the west of the original Close House property. The views were always spectacular, but the design by Scott Macpherson frames them brilliantly. We’ve also continued to enhance the course by adding length for tournament play, refining the shapes of the golf holes, and improving our water management. Meanwhile, Scott’s work on the Filly Course transformed it beyond anything I could have imagined when I arrived, and it too continues to improve each year as it matures. Development and investment have never stopped in my time here and we’ll be continuing to
improve conditions each year for our members. As we look ahead, there are many challenges facing us. Climate change will undoubtedly bring us more extreme weather conditions - from prolonged periods of frost delaying that start of the growing season to wetter, milder autumns increasing the chance of damage to fine turf areas and bunkering. Changes to legislation and how we use chemicals in agronomy will also mean we have to focus on long-term planning and preventative measures moving away from using on-the-spot fixes. We’ll tackle those challenges together. I’m incredibly proud of our team - many of whom started back when I did - and it has been fantastic to see our people develop. I never thought I’d be part of a business like Close House and get the chance to develop a golf course which has already hosted two tour events. We’ve worked hard to get to where we are, but getting to look out over two golf courses at their very best makes all the hard work worth it. www.closehouse.com 65

LOOKING AHEAD With managing director Jonathan Lupton
T
he first 10 years of the Close House story have been truly remarkable. We’ve had so many moments to be proud of - from our first tour event six years after breaking ground on the Colt Course to the money raised for charity through events held here. We’ve also had tremendous success in developing the next generation of golfers. We have worked with players throughout their journeys from kids who took part in our free school coaching going on to become England internationals and tour players, to members of our team becoming members of the PGA. We’ll be continuing to create those opportunities - from free schools coaching to the Junior Masters, and have more exciting projects to come. We’re also incredibly proud of our team and our development pathway, and I look forward to seeing what they can achieve in the years ahead. Our team is incredibly important to creating

the uniquely Close House experience. We have become a leader for golf in the region - setting benchmarks which we continue to push higher - from our industry-leading Academy to our golf courses and our off-course experience. That starts with my colleagues on the board - Jonny Greenwood and Nicki Lynch - and goes right through the team from our highly respected head of departments to the youngest members just setting out in their careers. It is a great honour to lead such a passionate team. We all work incredibly hard to exceed expectations and the feedback we get on our service is very satisfying. The continued support of our members has been so important, particularly in the last two years, and we can’t thank each of them enough for joining us on the journey. We are all incredibly passionate about what we do and I’m excited to see what we can create with our constantly evolving canvas in the next 10 years.
