EDITOR’S NOTE AND CONTENTS What a great way to open the new season with news of a major tour event coming to the region. The PGA Seniors Championship will see some of the most recognisable faces in the sport coming to Northumberland to test their skills on the Lee Westwood Colt course at Close House. It is a tribute to the work of everyone at Close House to secure such a prestigious event with the venue still in its infancy in golfing terms. What’s more - the decision to make the tickets free of charge gives fans young and old and their families from across the region the opportunity to get up close to legends of the game, as well as sample the magnificent facilities at Close House. This issue also marks the launch of Northern Golfer’s Junior Champion of Champions event - where the best young players from across the North East and Yorkshire will have an opportunity to take to the fairways of another magnificent venue, Ramside Hall. The region’s clubs and Junior Golf Partnerships have done much work to encourage youngsters to get into the game and we hope this trophy will be another way to stimulate interest as well as uncovering talented young golfers who could make it to the professional ranks. Alongside our well-established Gents Match Play Pairs and our new greensomes competition for ladies - there is still time to enter both on pages 56 and 57- the junior event means Northern Golfer now has an event covering golfers whatever their age or gender. Clubs across the region are preparing for their own competitions and to welcoming both members and visitors to their courses. There are some fantastic offers within these pages to try out different courses, sharpen up your game and renew your equipment. It is a great time to be a golfer in the region and it is encouraging to see many clubs reporting a rise in members after what has been a difficult few years. Let us hope we enjoy similar weather to the last couple of years and see all those handicaps plummet, our courses and clubhouses full and the region continues to be considered as venues for the very best events. The 2015 Northern Golfer Junior Champion of Champions New event to showcase the best young players from the North East and Yorkshire

J

unior Golfers from as far afield as Magdalene Fields to Huddersfield will compete for the Northern Golfer Junior Champion of Champions later this season. The tournament, the latest addition to Northern Golfer’s annual events which also includes the Gents Match Play Pairs - now in its fourth year, and the new Ladies Greensomes event, will take place over the new Cathedral course at Ramside Hall Hotel and Golf Club, Durham on October 10. The 18-hole, scratch competition will welcome the best young golfers in the North East and Yorkshire for a sprint event to crown the first Junior Champion of Champions in the region. Open to junior club championship winners, boys and girls, from Northumberland,

Durham, Teesside and selected clubs in Yorkshire, competitors will receive a meal and drink after their round as well as a Northern Golfer goodie bag. Prizes, including the Champion of Champions Trophy for the winner, will be presented to the top five placed golfers in the scratch event, as well as a trophy for the best nett score on the day. Jason Budd, regional manager for England Golf, says: “Competitions such as the Northern Golfer Junior Champion of Champions, as well as the events for male and female golfers which are aimed at club golfers, are the perfect opportunity to showcase the local talent that we have in the region. “The standard of junior golf in the region rises year-on-year and this event is a great chance to see some of the best young, local

golfers around in a competitive environment. It’s positive that Northern Golfer is running this and many other competitions for club golfers so there’s a real variety of competition for players of all abilities – which contributes towards driving

participation across all areas of the game. I’d like to wish all of the competitors the best of luck for the upcoming season.” Northern Golfer’s Paul Corney adds: “Bringing together our junior champions benefits all those taking part and we hope it will spur on

others to improve their games with the hope of qualifying in the future. We have some very good young players in our region and a tournament like this will support their development further.” Club secretaries and junior liaison officers from eligible clubs

will receive a letter and application form event in coming weeks, which should be completed and returned to Northern Golfer. Any club not in receipt of the documentation, please contact Gillian Corney email Gillian@offstonepublishing.co.uk or tel 01661 844 115.

Young Ben aims to go Stateside Family in race to raise the cash to allow son to play in world championship

W

ee wonder Ben Brown is off to the US in July - if his family can raise the funds. Teesside golf sensation Ben has been invited to play in the US Kids Golf World Championships at Pinehurst in North Carolina and his parents Craig and Kathryn are now hoping to raise the £5,000 needed to pay for the trip. Seven-year-old Ben started playing golf at the age of two when his parents bought him a Gator golf toy set. Little did they know how good he would become at such a young age, but given the Brown sporting family tradition maybe that’s not such a surprise. Kathryn’s sister Vicki Hutchinson plays in the second tier of ladies football and her uncle Colin Beesley played for Sunderland in the 1960s. It’s quite amazing what Ben has overcome to play golf to such a standard at such an age as he was born eight weeks premature weighing just 4lbs and had to spend many weeks in hospital before he could go home. Because he was born prematurely, Ben didn’t begin to walk until he was 18 months, but by 24 months he was putting a ball across the living room “with quite freaky accuracy” says Kathryn. 06 NORTHERN GOLFER

“Ben started with golf when he got a gator golf set for his second birthday and it became like an obsession for him,” said Kathryn. “He would spend hours walking backwards and forwards across the living room collecting his ball. We actually had to buy three sets of the game so that he had one at ours and at each of his grandparents to save us taking it with us wherever we went.” For his third birthday Craig and Kathryn got Ben a set of golf clubs and began taking him to the driving range. “It was then that we actually realised that he was a good putter. When he was out on the putting green people would stop and watch, surprised at his talent. “Several times people went to get other people to come outside and see how good he actually was. “Ben loves golf but it can be hard for him to play because he has a sun allergy which causes a full body rash with nausea and sickness. “We have found a balance of two medications and a prescription suncream which does not take away the symptoms altogether, but does alleviate them enough to allow him to play golf for short periods.”

Ben Brown

Ben played his first round over the nine-hole course at Stokesley when he was four and started playing in their tournaments when he was six. He started playing more tournaments and it was no surprise he had some successes including first place at Leeds Golf Centre to qualify for the Wee Wonders Grand Final at St Andrews, where he finished sixth, despite struggling badly with his sun allergy. He also finished second at the Tiger Club UK Final, was first and second in two tournaments at Stokesley Golf Range and was also third in Florida in a US Kids Golf Tournament. Ben has also qualified for the European Championships at Longniddry next month (May) thanks to his performance at St Andrews and is, hopefully, off to both the World Championships at Pinehurst and a US Kids event in Venice, Italy. A pupil at St Patrick’s Primary School, Fairfield, Ben now plays at Wynyard Golf Club, Knotty Hill Golf Centre and is also a member of Stokesley Golf Range and Seaton Carew Golf Club. Craig says: “He has a great temperament - he’s particularly good around the greens, chipping and putting. “He’s not the biggest of kids, but his swing makes up for it. He might not hit it as far as kids who really smack it, but he usually hits it straight down the middle. “He loves it, though. He’s already told school he wants to be a professional golfer and if he can’t do that, he’d like to teach children to play golf. We are currently fundraising to send him to the World Championships and we would love for someone to sponsor him or for anyone to help at all would be great.” Craig and Kathryn have set up a fund-raising site with Gofundme.com - go to www.gofundme.com/mozzxw

Stars back new academy Northumberland club launches a range of options to attract new blood

G

arrick Porteous and Steve Harmison have joined forces at Longhirst Hall’s brand new golf acadamy. The academy, which is backed by former England cricketer Harmison, opened at the end of March and 2013 British Amateur Champion and European Challenge Tour player Porteous has agreed an attachment. Porteus, 25, hails from Morpeth, and will have free use of the facilities, which makes a lot of sense with the impressive Longhirst Hall close by, as he continues to establish himself

in the professional ranks. Porteous said: “I used to go down to Longhirst as a youngster and I’ve seen the club evolve and grow so I’m delighted to be linking up with them. “The facilities are going to be brilliant and I’m very excited about it. “It’s right on my doorstep and hopefully, with Steve on board, it can have a big influence throughout the North East.” Harmison, like Porteous, is represented by International Sports management and believes that having a professional working at the academy

Steve Harmison and Garrick Porteous on a daily basis will help his plans to get local youngsters into the sport. He said: “Garrick will have the chance to be himself and I know he will feel comfortable working at Longhirst. “It will be a chance for kids in the area to come and watch someone who is starting his professional career and hopefully see him rise through the Challenge Tour to the European

Tour first-hand. He’ll get the best possible preparation with us and I’m sure it’s something that can work for everyone.” Harmison played cricket for England between 2002 and 2009 and recently took over as manager of nonleague football side Ashington. He is also a keen golfer and a mmeber of a number of clubs in the North East.

The coaching of local youngsters will be headed by Longhirst’s head pro Carl Nicholls. For more information on the new facility and the opportunities available go to www.longhirstgolf.co.uk

Ramside captain Kevin Maddison presents a £4,000 Rolex watch to David Lewis as winner of the main raffle in the club’s annual fundraising campaign

Ramside’s captains continue raising thousands for good causes

R

amside Hall’s charity fundraising shows no signs of slackening off. Veterans at Ease has thanked last year’s captain Kevin Maddison and his fellow members for raising in the region of £7,000 for their work. Nearly £9,000 also went to Tiny Lives, which supports premature and sick newborn babies and their families in the specialist unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. Inj 2013, nearly £16,000 went to the Children’s Heart Unit Fund at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle thanks to the then captain Gordon Dance and the members following a variety of charity golf competitions, raffles, auctions, gala dinners and private donations, including a match funding donation of £5,250 from Barclays Bank, through its employee and Ramside member Paul West. Last year, captain Kevin Maddison chose Veterans at Ease 08 NORTHERN GOLFER

and CHUF as his chosen charities. Veterans at Ease therapist John Taylor said: “We are extremely grateful for the efforts of Ramside Golf Club and the generosity of all who contributed. The money will go toward our work and is a massive help.” The charity has offices in Saddler Street, Durham and at Bede’s World, in Jarrow, and covers an area from Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire to Berwick in Northumberland. Maddison said: “When I first met John and spoke about Veterans at Ease they were a new charity. They are helping veterans coming back from conflict who have some form of mental illness, where the Government has withdrawn a lot of financial support. I felt they were a worthy cause to support.” One other happy man during the year was David Lewis who won a £4,000 Rolex watch which was a main raffle item in the annual fundraising campaign.

Deadly duo’s desert storm Golfing couple lift trophy in Morocco again

R

ichmond duo Gary Catt and Eileen McMullen have won the prestigious HowDidiDo national mixed pairs title for a second time. Catt, a two-handicapper, and McMullen, who plays off 22, both play at North Yorkshire club Richmond and won the final event in Morocco. It was the second time in three years that the duo has claimed the title, having won in Vilamoura in 2012. There was also triumph for Ian Cook, an eight-handicapper from Hull club Hessle, who clinched the singles title. But the week wasn’t without its drama for McMullen and Catt. Catt said: “I’m a competitive golfer

and it’s a very competitive event throughout, especially this year, when you’ve had to play home and away matches - and the away matches went right to the wire. “It was a really good format, very testing, very much like the final. You get drawn into competitive golf from the very first ball you hit. “On Tuesday our caddy disappeared for 10 minutes into the trees and came back out and said ‘I’m a father!’ He’d been going to the hospital in the morning and coming here at midday for us. And we were so friendly with him this week we could be God-parents.” McMullen added: “I like the caddy culture here. It adds to the real tournament feel of the event. The caddies aren’t just there to

Gary Catt and Eileen McMullen Ian Cook lines up his winning putt pull a bag either, they are very knowledgeable. You trust the caddy because they’re nearly always right with their reading of the greens.” The duo enjoyed six-nights at the stunning L’Amphitrite Palace hotel, in Skhirat; and rounds of golf at the Royal Golf Dar Essalam. Singles champion Cook, a 44-year-old surveyor, won each of his previous four matches during the week. He said: “I’m still shaking now to be honest. It’s unbelievable.”

Middlesbrough’s Chris Wall, twice a winner of the title, had to settle for equal third while Gateshead duo Michael Hedley, a 13-handicapper and his Whickham club-mate Peter Adnitt, who plays off six, also finished down the field.

Rock is rolling Five-star resort Rockliffe Hall picks up more awards

R

ockliffe Hall has beaten off competition from some of the best in the world to clinch a number of top accolades. The resort picked up the award for Best Greenkeepers at the 59Club’s annual service excellence awards which recognise the best performing golf clubs not just in the UK but around the world. In addition, Rockliffe was also presented with the Gold Flag award for the second year running - the industry benchmark recognising the best in the sector. The club was

also runner-up in the ultimate golf resort category, narrowly beaten by Ryder Cup venue Celtic Manor. The awards, hosted by BBC sports presenter Dan Walker were held at the Forest of Arden in Warwickshire. Rockliffe Hall’s golf and estate director Davy Cuthbertson said: “Rockliffe Hall is classed as a relatively young course, having opened just six year ago, so to be up against some of the very best in the business is an accolade in itself. “However, we have won two major awards and been runners-up

Davy Cuthbertson, Rockliffe Hall’s golf and estates manager, with the greenkeeping team in two very tough categories so we are extremely proud of the team. It’s a fantastic start to the year for our course with some exciting plans for the coming season.”

Rockliffe has been home to the European Tour English Senior Open for the last two years, attracting international names and Ryder Cup legends.

Stuart Imeson receives his award

The boys Dun good

National success for Dunstanburgh Castle’s greenkeepers

D

unstanburgh Castle’s young greenkeeping team has won two national awards. Head greenkeeper Stuart Imeson has been named 2014 Young Greenkeeper of the Year, while the team has also collected Greens Team of the Year. Stuart took over the reins at Dunstanburgh at the tender age of 18. The 23-year-old now works alongside his two staff, James Thorpe, also 23, and 18-year-old Dan Wilkin. The Northumberland club and course has had a season they will never forget, beginning in February 2014 when Stuart and James were selected to work at the European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. They both came back full of ideas, but mainly full of enthusiasm after watching Rory McIlroy win the event. The momentum didn’t stop there as owner Dr Peter Gilbert invested significantly in two key pieces of machinery. In July Stuart wenr to work at the 143rd Open Championship at Hoylake, which proved to be The Open all British fans wanted after

McIlroy claimed the Claret Jug for the first time. From then on Stuart and his team got their heads down and prepared Dunstanburgh to the highest standard possible with a few older members saying the course has never been in as good condition and was a credit to the three young men. The IOG/BIGGA (Institute of Groundsmanship/ British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association) awards aren’t just judged on playing surfaces, but on the overall management of each site with all tools and budgets taken into consideration, Stuart said: “It’s an honour to even be nominated for these awards, but to win both in one season proves we’re on the right track. “The lads have fully supported my ridiculous action plan and without them and backing from Dr Peter Gilbert, we would not have had the success we have.” James Thorpe added: “The drive and enthusiasm Stuart has is second to none. I’ve caught the bug now and want to achieve further awards and travel the world in greenkeeping.”

Moor the merrier for EuroPro

Moor Allerton to host first four-day EuroPro event with a prize fund of £60,000

T

he HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour will make its first four-day stop at Moor Allerton this summer with the Clipper Logistics Players Championship becoming a 72-hole event. Clipper Logistics will be adding an additional £10,000 to the prize fund to create a £60,000 tournament purse, with the winner taking home £12,000. The longer tournament is a big step for the tour, the UK’s number one tour and leading satellite to the European Tour. The Clipper Logistics Players Championship has

also been secured for three years, guaranteeing a minimum 54-hole EuroPro event at Moor Allerton until 2017, with the option to continue as a 72-hole tournament. This year’s event begins on Wednesday August 26, concluding on Saturday August 29 with a pretournament pro-am to be played on Tuesday, August 25. A cut to the leading 50 players plus ties will be made after 36 holes. Barry Hearn, chairman of Matchroom Sport and the EuroPro Tour, said: “This is brilliant news for the tour. It brings the EuroPro Tour even closer to the Challenge

Daniel Gavins playing Moor Allerton’s 18th in 2013 and European Tours and means the best young golfers in the country will have the chance to experience the rigorous demands of performing well over 72 holes in front of the Sky Sports cameras.” James Whitaker, head professional at Moor Allerton Golf Club, added: “This is a great opportunity for the EuroPro players and for Moor Allerton. This will be the third consecutive year in which we have hosted the PGA EuroPro Tour and this is a really big step in growing the event.”

New fairway bunkers at Whickham’s 16th

All change at Whickham Popular course in Tyne and Wear undergoes a revamp

W

hickham is making changes to its Hollinside Park layout. The club has decided to scrap the Nordmann course with the two holes that were in Snipes Dene allowed to return to Mother Nature due to an inability to maintain them to the same high standards as the rest of the course. Both holes were often closed in winter or wet conditions, and a decision was taken to develop and re-configure the course layout to replace them. The original Crombie course will be expanded from a men’s par of 68 into a men’s par of 71, and par 72 to a par 74 forladies, and will happen in two phases. Phase one sees a redesign of the 16th hole from a par four to a par five. It means Whickham will begin this season with the course as a par 69 and it will be re-branded and named Hollinside Park. Phase two will introduce two new holes in 2016 and the changes will also provide a par five third

hole blended from the original third tee and extending into the original fourth quarry hole. This will be followed by a new par four fourth hole, while the fifth is a new par three with outstanding views from Bird Hill. The design of the new fourth hole and the redesign of the par three fifth modify the existing undulations of the land on which it is being built and helps to reduce the amount or earth that has to be moved - fitting the course into the landscape more naturally. The new green that has been constructed is following the USGA construction model for sand-based greens, which is similar to the existing greens and will therefore allow management of the new holes to continue seamlessly within the existing layout. The new mounds either side of the new green along with inclusion of a tree line will provide a fair test of accuracy from the new tees. The project is being masterminded by Andrew Mair Golf Design.

Whickham will be holding its annual pro am on May 22. Taems are £270. For more information email enquiries@whickhamgolfclub.co.uk

HALL ABOUT THE MEMBERS Northumberland club launches a range of attractive membership options

A

rcot Hall has come up with a full range of new options in a bid to attract new members. The Northumberland club, which is based just north of Newcastle at Dudley, has taken a positive approach in response to the problem of falling membership numbers. With their latest offer of Lifestyle Membership, Arcot secretarymanager Brian Rumney feels the club now has a complete range of options that can satisfy the needs of anyone considering golf club membership. Arcot Hall offers the traditional options of five, six and seven-day

memberships where payment of an annual subscription entitles the member to unlimited golf and use of the clubhouse facilities which are top-class, as is the course. Now Arcot is offering a new Lifestyle Membership which involves a smaller initial fee (£188) and then a reduced green fee is paid each time the member plays the course (£10 midweek and £15 at weekends). The new category is aimed at the people who find their busy lifestyles mean they do not have the time to play the amount of rgolf each year to justify the full membership subscription, but still would like to

Arcot Hall’s 18th green and clubhouse retain a club handicap and play in competitions when they can. “This new category has been well received and has already helped us to retain some existing members who were thinking of leaving - as well as attracting new members to the club,” said Rumney. “I see this as the final piece in the jigsaw which gives Arcot Hall the membership options to satisfy any golfer’s needs.”

Arcot has introduced several new initiatives inthe last 12 months. It has established a link with Eaglescliffe Golf Club whereby Arcot members can play Eaglescliffe an unlimited number of times each year and vice-versa. The club also runs free Get into Golf introductory group classes over five weeks throughout the year with tuition given by one of the club’s PGA qualified professionals.

For details of all of Arcot’s offers go to www.arcothall.co.uk or contact Brian Rumney, email at arcothall@tiscali.co.uk or tel 0191 236 2794

THE HIGHS AND LOWS

OF A EUROPEAN TOUR PROFESSIONAL As I write, I find myself glancing up at the huge screens in the departure lounge of Gatwick airport every few seconds as I’m about three hours into a five hour layover. I’ve already been travelling, from Madeira, for some 14 hours and I won’t arrive at my hotel in Morocco for another six hours. I haven’t seen my wife for two months, and in that time I have spent a lot more money than I have earned. ‘What on earth am I doing?’ So in between checking the screens, nipping off for a coffee and a snack, and checking Twitter, I find myself contemplating my chosen career. There are a lot of moments like this, and they are quite frankly deflating. It can be boring, lonely, tiring, and extremely expensive. However, the other side of the coin keeps me smiling. The highs that I am fortunate enough to experience far outweigh the lows. There isn’t a time when I am happier than the initial few seconds after a perfectly struck shot. The feeling of the ball on the face and watching it fall right on line with the pin…Heaven! That feeling is multiplied when you add in tournament pressure and a large crowd. There’s a shot I hit into the 17th green at St Andrews in the final round of the Dunhill Links Championship two years ago which still gives me goosebumps when I think about it. This is why I love my job, and why the low moments don’t get me down for too long. The journey of trying to become better is a fascinating, frustrating and delightful one. It’s all to try and make moments like the 17th at St Andrews happen more often. Golfers lose a lot more than they win. That’s just the nature of trying to beat 155 guys every week. The times I have managed to come out on top or hit that perfect shot make all the travelling, lonely nights, missed cuts, shanks and duffs so worthwhile. I’m extremely fortunate to be able to do a job that can create such an overwhelming feeling of joy and satisfaction - even if that feeling hasn’t happened as much as I would have liked…yet.

Academy Assessment Days will be in September at Close House Saturday 12th of September and Linden Hall Saturday 19th of September. Academy Applications taken up to 31/8/15. County coaching

Explosive start

The management of county golf coaching in Northumberland will be overseen by the County Coaching Committee this season; a body made up of top county officials and some of the best PGA professionals in the North East. The coaching programmes, which cover both boys and girls aged 10-18, are often the first step in identifying future county players who may one day follow in the footsteps of the county’s leading amateurs and young professionals. The programme will be expanded this year following the success of a grant application for an under-14 programme. The first under-14 assessment day takes place at Close House on Saturday April 18. For more information contact Marcus Webb, email M_webb8@ sky.com or tel 07714 612 177. Junior Academy pupils will receive eight hours of coaching at a reduced rate of £25 thanks to the grant.

Sue Towse

George Washington Golf Club 0191 402 9988

There was plenty of humour at Flamborough Head’s Lady Captain’s Drive In Day. New captain Sue Towse’s inaugural competition was an individual stableford played over 14 holes with a shotgun start. Sue started the day with a photograph surrounded by all the ladies including past president Audrey Farrant and was invited to drive in by outgoing lady captain Barbara Poole. Unbeknown to Sue her driving-in ball was not a conventional golf ball but a trick exploding ball which provoked much hilarity. After the competition, a small reception and prize giving was held. First place was Kath Leeson with 23 points. In second place was Ann Massey with 22, narrowly beating Mary Sunley on countback with the minor placings going to Joyce Baron and Joy Richards.

Hills street views olfers are being urged to consider investing in a holiday home with access to a championship course. The first phase of the multimillion Northumbrian Hills development is now complete and the show cottage is open for viewing. Burgham Park Golf Club has been in operation for more than 20 years. The 18-hole golf course was designed by former Ryder Cup captain Mark James and has played host to several PGA North Region Championships. Owners William Kiely and John Fallon have embarked on a massive investment programme which would provide much needed accommodation and more importantly, work for local people. This initial phase consists of eight high quality holiday cottages built by Brims Construction, which is based in Newcastle. William said: “We have had a lot of interest with four booked already, which is remarkable considering we only opened last week. “We hope to move on to the second phase towards the end of

May where clients purchase a plot with a deposit and the cottages are then built on a self build basis with a five-stage payment plan.” This exclusive high quality development will eventually consist of 50 holiday cottages which will finance further development of Burgham Park. William added: “We started planning for this in 2007 and the proceeds from the sale of the houses will go towards the expansion of the rest of the resort. The golf academy, leisure facilities, restaurant bars along with function and conference facilities will all see investment and we are looking to complete the project in the next two and a half years. “It’s great for the local area, we already have 10 jobs here plus the building jobs and we are looking at employing a further 30 fulltime staff.” The management is also considering a partnership with other golf clubs. “I believe this is an ideal golf location where players can stay here, play here or next door at Linden, Longhirst, Percy Wood or wherever,” said William.

or many years, Leda Golf traded successfully from a charming corner of Lambton Park near Sunderland, but the company, it’s owner Kevin Pattison and his staff Craig Jackson and Marc Burgess, were forced to re-locate to Roseberry Grange Community Golf Club in County Durham. Earlier this year, Kevin passed the business over to Marc who is looking to follow in the footsteps of his former boss. Marc said: “I took over in January this year and the business is going to continue in the same way it has done in the past. Obviously, we will be doing all the servicing and repairs for the electric trolleys and the golf shop will remain the same. “Although the ownership has now changed hands, everything will stay the same. As far as we are concerned, it’s onwards and upwards so we’ll just have to see how it goes and hope we can

perform in the same way as we’ve done in the past.” Following the move to Roseberry Grange, Leda Golf struggled initially with but it has been picking up and Marc is very optimistic. Kevin has moved into semiretirement, but remains a member of the shop team. His relationship with Roseberry Grange is unchanged and he will continue to perform his duties as vice-chairman at the club. He is therefore on hand to support and help in the shop when needed. On Roseberry Grange, Marc added: “The club is doing really well and generally bucking the trend. It is going from strength to strength and this year there has been a change in the hierarchy within the club, a new secretary, chairman and vice chairman. The club is going forward, membership is up, green fees are up, the course is getting better and better - the future looks good.”

Fit for purpose Golfers test out the Speedflex system and make big gains on and off the course

A

n eight-week training programme aimed at golfers, which is based around the revolutionary health and fitness concept Speedflex, has produced a strong set of results for participating golfers. The before and after study, which saw the golfers’ overall fitness levels monitored at Speedflex Newcastle and the length of carry of their drives measured by Flightscope technology at the Close House Academy, has seen participants increase their drives by up to 65 yards and their fitness levels by 30% in some cases. The youngest golfer taking part was 34 and the oldest was 68, while handicaps ranged from single figures to low 20s. The study, a concept from North East businessman Graham Wylie -

owner of Speedflex and Close House, concentrates on low impact, highintensity interval training (HIIT) in small group sessions led by a personal trainer while the participants heart rate is monitored. Jonathan Lupton, head PGA teaching professional at the Close House Academy said: “Rory McIlroy had a fantastic season and won back to back majors after working hard on his fitness and changing the shape of his body. His extra power and control provided him the platform to dominate the game last summer. “The findings from the project prove that Speedflex is helping everyday players to hit the ball further, in some cases a lot further. “The machines respond to individual effort levels so people of all ages and abilities train together in

Lee Westwood is also a fan of Speedflex, and a regular user of the system having been introduced to the

Unlike other exercises there is very little or no post exercise muscle soreness and Speedflex has definitely improved my overall strength and conditioning. “It’s great to see the results of the research which is good news for golfers who want to improve their overall golf game and fitness at the same time.”

Seventh Heaven Srixon Junior Golf Tour back to build on six successful years

T

he Durham County Golf Partnership Junior Golf Tour is back for a seventh year this season, following another incredibly successful year in 2014. The DCGP Junior Golf Tour is an initiative which provides opportunities for young golfers to gain competitive experience while encouraging them to continue practising and playing to improve their games. The tour is open to golfers aged 8-12 for boys and 8-13

Durham juniors who won the Srixon Junior Tour last year for girls. Players do not need to hold a handicap, and compete in four events around the county during the summer. In 2014, more than 70 boys and girls from Durham competed for the chance to represent Team Durham in the Regional Final at The

Wynyard Club, which included teams from Northumberland and Cumbria. Durham went on to retain the trophy for the second time, becoming the first county to win the final in their own county. This year’s Regional Final held for the second time in Cumbria

at the end of the Summer. This year’s tour, which is aging sponsored by Cleveland/Srixon begins at South Moor on May 10 before moving on to George Washington on June 14, Hartlepool on July 26, and ending at Durham City on August 16.

There is a limited number of spaces at each event which are given on a first come first served basis. The closing date for entries is Friday May 1. For more information and to enter, go to www.durhamgolfpartnership.com

Matthew Bowman at Morpeth Golf Club

Morpeth’s new boss

General manager moves North

M

orpeth Golf Club has a new man at the helm. Following years of service, Terry Minnett has called it a day and retired from the post of general manager leaving the door open for Matthew Bowman to be appointed. Matthew, 34, took over in January and appears to have fully settled into his new job. He is from Norfolk and has worked in golf since he was 14, starting in the pro shop at Kings Lynn before moving into the clubhouse. Following a short university experience, he returned to Kings Lynn where he began working in the office. He got the opportunity to take over as general manager but having been at the same club for 20 years, Matthew decided it was time for a change. He said: “When I left Kings Lynn, I worked at West Norfolk for a

little while and began applying for general manager jobs. This gave me a little time so I didn’t have to panic. The job came up here at Morpeth and I liked the look of it. There is plenty of opportunity for development and improvement and it is a very friendly area, not disimilar to Norfolk.” Matthew is currently living in the flat attached to the clubhouse and hopes to improve the club generally, in particular the junior section. He added: “The club needs a gentle nudge towards the modern era and the clubhouse could do with a lick of paint. Members who have been at the club for a lot of years do not tend to see these things and take everything for granted. Being new to Morpeth, I notice these things and when I’ve brought anything up with the board that needs rectifying, they have listened favourably.”

Twissell at the helm John Twissell (right) is planning to make the most of his term as PGA North captain by playing in as many events time will allow from his busy job as a teaching professional at Garstang. “I still enjoy competing but I don’t always have the freedom because of work. At least I’m exempt from qualifying!” he quipped. “But it’s a great honour to be chosen as 24 NORTHERN GOLFER

captain. I’ve still got the jacket when Lancashire appointed me in 2002 – and it still fits me.” Twissell spent six years in the US before returning to work with Royal Lytham and St Annes professional Eddie Birchenough.

Chris Hanson

Hanson pay day Yorkshire golfer Chris Hanson’s winter training has already paid off. Hanson, who represents Woodsome Hall, has been getting in some warm-weather practice at Los Naranjos, near Puerto Banus in Spain and he decided to take in an event in Alcaidesa on The Gecko Pro Tour. Despite the hillside layout and windy conditions, there was a twohour delay for extreme winds on day

two, Hanson shot rounds of 70 and 71 - two clear of Ross Kellett (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) - to claim the top cheque. He then followed iy up with a tied 12th place at La Canada on the same tour. Hanson said: “It’s been the most constructive February I have ever had for practice and the months grinding in the UK through the winter make me wonder why I’ve never tried to do this before.”

Hexham’s Matty Lamb (photograph Leaderboard Photography)

Lamb on England’s menu Hexham teenager Matty Lamb, and Dan O’Loughlin, will represent England Golf in the prestigious Thunderbird International at Grayhawk, Arizona, from May 22-25. Lamb, 16, is a member of the England Golf boys squad and has represented England since 2012. O’Loughlin, 16, from Ruddington

Grange in Nottinghamshire, helped England’s U16 boys to wins over Wales and Scotland in last year’s series of internationals. They will be aiming to follow in the footsteps of Max Orrin from Kent who made history in 2012 when he became the first English player to win this 54-hole junior event with a five-stroke winning margin.

COURSEREVIEW

Prepare to do battle at Catterick Alan Hedley marches through a visually stunning North Yorkshire course and enjoys the challenge

C

atterick Garrison sits very well in that group of North Yorkshire courses which provide a demanding, yet enjoyable, test of golf. Founded in 1930 and redesigned in 1938 by Arthur Day, Catterick has a long-established link with the nearby army garrison which was responsible for the original course. The course had been a six-hole and a 12-hole layout before Day created 18 holes in 1938 and the course currently measures 6,378 yards from the back tees. Not long by modern standards, but with rolling fairways and well-protected greens set in 26 NORTHERN GOLFER

beautiful parkland and moorland with mature oaks, elms, copper beeches and conifers, it is visually stunning. The subtly-contoured greens and the prevalence of fairway riggs will test your game. Take it lightly and this course will bite! There are also several changes in elevation and the course opens with three par fours, the first a long, uphill 400 yards-plus with out of bounds flanking both sides of the fairway. It’s followed by a dog-leg; you need to get the drive to the corner, especially into wind, and you’d be wise to keep as far left as possible to reach the green.

Another strong uphill par four with out of bounds along the right comprises an early test off the tee. Here the second shot will be a blind one unless you hit a very long drive. Then it’s on to a cracking par five of 574 yards with no bunkers. However, you must stay out of the gorse, and take some time to check out the great views from the tee. There’s nothing for being short at the par three fifth, while the sixth is the signature hole (see factfile). The seventh will tempt you to bite off a chunk of the corner in order to get closer to the green, but a good steady drive will leave a reasonably easy second shot. It is followed by a solid par three and the ninth is also fairly straightforward, but does have a narrow raised green which needs care. The back nine begins with a hole that is just

COURSEREVIEW

The club is also looking at plans for a pitch and putt course and is now part of a reciprocal scheme with Dinsdale Spa, Pike Hills, Oak Leaf, Wilton, Boldon, South Moor, Bishop Auckland and Kendal where members can play each course for a green fee of £7.50 375 yards, but the green is perched at the top of the hill and is tricky to find. Another raised green follows at the long par five 11th and anything right could leave you blocked out. At 263 yards, the 12th is a drivable par four, but don’t hook it as there is trouble left. It is followed by the shortest par three on the course, but one of the best as the green is narrow with a ridge and there is a massive bunker short of the green. Another 400 yards-plus par four dog-leg follows with a blind drive and out of bounds to the right. The 15th is the start of a tough finishing stretch of four par fours and has an uphill second shot to a tricky green. There are no bunkers on the spectacular dog-leg 16th with out of bounds right and a ditch left, and the 17th isn’t called Destructor for nothing! With out of bounds left, ditches on either side of the fairway at the bottom of the hill plus a monster bunker, it is a card-wrecker. Again the clue is in the name at the last. With trees either side, out of bounds left and water right, you want a straight drive on this dog-leg called Devil’s Elbow and you’ll be very happy with a four. Then to the modern two-storey clubhouse with the all the facilities you’d expect and the main bar’s glass sliding doors opening on to a balcony with panoramic views across the 16th, 17th and 18th.

There are plans to upgrade the club’s excellent practice facilities with funding approved for a covered sixbay area. That will also augment the well-stocked pro’s shop and feature the Flightscope X2 Elite System which head professional Alex James, who has played on the European Challenge Tour and was twice a winner of the Welsh PGA Assistants Championship, has installed.

It’s a tempter as well because you can go for it with a really big hit, but it’s dangerous as there are a number of trees and two front bunkers. A good drive will leave a simple pitch, but the green is no easy matter as it’s elevated and two-tiered.

Golf in the Wild

Wild swings

G

olf has an sometimes unfair reputation for being elitist and expensive but there is a quieter side to the game - the natural landscape of rural nine-hole courses, the world of honesty boxes and empty fairways, the world of Golf in the Wild. While nine-hole courses may not be everybody’s cup of tea and can be a trek to get to, there are many worth visiting to enjoy their remoteness, stunning views and a sense of travelling back in time. Researched and written by Robin Down from Allendale Golf Club in Northumberland, Golf in the Wild describes a golfing pilgrimage which heads to the far north from Allendale. Through the Scottish Borders, the route meanders along the high road to Mull, Skye and along the sharp edges of Scotland’s Atlantic coast to reach its final destination, Cape Wrath and Durness. This is not an ordinary golfing book; some might say it is hardly a golf book at all. There are certainly long passages when the game is hardly mentioned, instead it heads off at a tangent through history, ghosts and the passing of time. On reviewing the book, Norman

Harris from The Times newspaper said: “Small is clearly beautiful to the author, who clearly has a passion and curiosity for these special golfing terrains and the way local landscapes and history have shaped them. His odyssey should strike a chord with a small army of kindred souls.” Another reviewer described it as ‘a cross between Bernard Darwin, Kate Atkinson and Jeremy Clarkson if such a thing can be imagined; it is by turns entertaining, funny and moving.’ Robin explained: “The journey starts at the centre of mainland Britain and heads via a circuitous route to its top left-hand corner. I chose this route to the far reaches of Scotland’s north west coast because it is the most spectacular of any in Britain and, I would suggest, anywhere in the world. To appreciate this, there is no substitute for going there yourself. “The golf courses visited are, to some extent, determined by the route, but they have certain attributes in common: they all have nine holes, they are generally quiet with honesty boxes and they are all in beautiful settings. In short, they are just like Allendale, the starting point of this journey into the wild.”

The book is available online from Amazon, www.golfinthewild.co.uk and from local bookshops including Cogito Books, Hexham and The Forum Bookshop, Corbridge.

CARL NICHOLLS AGE: 36 TURNED PRO: 23 H/CAP: ONE YOUR GOLF “I played county golf for Northumberland and a few national events as an amateur. As a pro, I’ve played a lot of the NE/NW PGA events and a handful of PGA EuroPro Tour events.” THIS SEASON “With the new range opening at Longhirst, including a double teaching bay with the latest technology, I’m looking forward to growing the coaching we offer to members and visitors. The new kit is also going to improve our custom fitting offer and allow us to better match clubs to each player. “Away from the range, I’ll be working on my new golf fashion business (originalgreen.co.uk) which offers golf/ lifestyle fashion brands like Galvin Green, Oscar Jacobson and Lyle & Scott and is based here at Longhirst. I’ve always been interested in the business side of the game and expanding the clothing business is something I’m really looking forward to. On the course, I’ll be back playing NE/NW PGA events.” GETTING INTO THE GAME “As a lot of kids do, I picked up the game with my dad at the age of 13. Living in Rothbury, there wasn’t a great deal to do as a kid so I used to spend a lot of time at the golf course – particularly on long summer days. I got down to single figures at 16 and decided I wanted a career in golf. I went on to study golf and leisure management at Lincoln University before moving to Spain and then the US. I did my PGA training at Parklands and then Tynemouth under John McKenna, moving to Callaway, then Arcot, and to Longhirst in September 2012.” AIMS/FUTURE “There are two big things I want to build on this year. I want to grow my golf clothing business. I also want to develop the coaching on offer here at Longhirst following the opening of the new driving range, in particular the junior academy as we need to introduce as many young people to the sport as we can to ensure we keep growing the number of people playing regularly.”

Equipped for success Beamish Park looks to the future

L

ike many of the golf clubs in the region, Beamish Park has struggled in recent years but following prudent management they have managed to turn the club around and have been able in invest in new equipment. Club chairman George Hanlon is more than pleased with how things are developing at the club. He explained: “I believe we can see the light at the end of the tunnel and we are now on a sound footing. “We are moving to a point where we have the full support of the membership and they have been very proactive in supporting what we have been doing. “We haven’t got out of the woods in terms of cash flow yet but we have

stabilised things and succeeded in getting our costs under control and we now have a secure foundation to build on. This is what we are doing and investing in the future. “As a direct result, we have recently been able to purchase two new green machines, a rough cutter and a fairway cutter each costing £30,000 along with four additional buggies. Last year all the buggies were constantly being sold out in terms of time, so that’s an investment. Work has also been continuing on the course on drainage and paths, so we have been busy over the winter period.” Hopefully, Beamish Park Golf Club, which has abolished joing fees for members, has now turned the corner and its future is assured.

Lysa, who is based at the Oaks club in York and Sarah Bennett from the Three Rivers in Essex met HRH The Princess Royal at Loughborough as part of the Women into High Performance Coaching development programme. “It was brilliant, she really took time with us,” said Jones, who along with Bennett coaches the England Golf Performance Squads. “This programme has encouraged me to believe that I can achieve anything and has helped me to understand how to overcome any barriers that appear along the way. “I have always been ambitious and I am proud of my coaching success to date – I now feel more

confident in pushing myself onwards and upwards.” The duo were nominated for the programme by England Golf ’s performance director Nigel Edwards and reflect the PGA’s Right Coach; Right Place; Right Time philosophy. During her visit. HRH took part in a discussion with a number of governing bodies of sport including The PGA represented by Jane Booth, head of coaching systems, who said: “Raising the profile of female PGA professionals as a key part of a diverse workforce is an important priority for The PGA over the next few years. “Golf is a fantastic game that can be played by anyone, and it is important that women are able to see golf as a possibility for them – both in terms of participation but also as a potential career opportunity.”

Long service Bob John has stepped down as secretary of the Northumberland and Durham Alliance after 25 years. South Moor’s Alan Liddle has taken over as secretary and a presentation was made to Bob at the Alliance’s annual meeting. In his retirement speech, Bob thanked

all members past and present, and all the golf clubs that have helped make his time enjoyable and worthwhile. “I will miss the banter, chats, fun and even the ‘aggro’ and, most of all, your friendship,” he said.

Work pays off for Woodham Club enjoying a renaissance as new owners invest thousands in facilities

W

oodham Golf Club is approaching the new season in a positive mood after a comprehensive programme of winter work. The new owners Woodham Golf and Leisure undertook a huge programme of work and improvements after they bought the 6,671 yard course and clubhouse in July 2014 - and that approach has continued. All the tees and greens have been verti-drained while the greens have also been sand injected using a graden machine. Major drainage work using a

special camera to supervise work on nearly 2,000 metres of drainage and the ongoing tidying up of copses, bushes and shrubs has restored the course to the standard it was in several years ago. It didn’t stop there, with the clubhouse has also been refurbished with a new ladies locker room and an extensive patio area has been built around the clubhouse. Further improvements are also being looked at, tee markers are being renewed, and an agronomist has been appointed to advise on further work. Not surprisingly, membership is growing, especially with the offer of 13

Woodham Golf Club months for the price of 12 advertised for the beginning of the new season and, significantly, a number of former members have returned to the club after they were forced to move elsewhere when Woodham closed early last year. With investment from the new owners, what has always been a quality layout now seems assured of a bright future. Woodham opened as a propiety/ pay as you play club with membership

in 1983 and was known as Rushyford Golf Club and was leased by the Dave Thomas/Peter Allis group. In 1985 it was sold and renamed Woodham Golf Club. The club has had a succession of owners, and Woodham Golf and Leisure are determined to bring out the best of what has always been highly rated course which was designed by James Hamilton-Stutt, the grandson of legendary course designer James Braid.

Harrogate’s gripping year Vardon tournament to be played again at Yorkshire course

I

t promises to be a busy year for Harrogate once again. The success of the inaugural Vardon Grip Trophy in 2014 led to it becoming a firm fixture on the golfing calendar and retain its status as a Yorkshire Order of Merit event. This year the tournament will be played on July 1 in order to make the most of the mid-season playing conditions and the club will once again pull out all of the stops to make the event one of the best in Yorkshire. At the beginning of September, Harrogate will also welcome England Golf for its Senior Men’s and Women’s North Tournament. The two-day event will see more than 100 golfers battle it out for the

trophies on offer. In the past two years, the club has introduced fiveday and flexible memberships and as a result has welcomed more than 100 new golfers. Last year also saw the creation of a new shorter green course and this will be extended to a full measured 18-hole short course this year. Club secretary Ruth SkaifeClarke said: “The short course helped to attract junior and beginner golfers while also being helpful to members who had lost some of their length off the tee but who still wished to compete in competitions. “We are following England’s Golf advice to introduce more products to attract new golfers and to tempt non-club golfers into the club.”

Entry forms for the Vardon Grip Trophy are now available on the Yorkshire Order of Merit website and from the club, email ruth@harrogate-gc.co.uk or tel 01423 862 999

In the swing Young Richmond golfers get into the sport

G

et in the Swing, a six-week indoor golf project, has supported or introduced the game to 34 young people aged 6-15-years-old in Richmondshire. The project, which took place at Richmond School Sports Hall, included team games and activities which covered everything from the swing to chipping and putting.

Richmond Golf Club head professional James Hare, assistant professional Bradley Rowntree, club captain Adrian Brakenberry, and junior co-ordinator Richie Bastow delivered the coaching on the project. Funding for the course was provided by Richmondshire District Council’s Community Opportunity Fund, which gave 11 children the opportunity to try golf for the first

time. A further 23 juniors from Richmond Golf Club got the chance to improve their skills. Richie Bastow, who set up the project, said: “Richmond Golf Club’s focus is to make golf more accessible and fun for all children and young people in the community. It’s fantastic to watch a young person improve their ability and learn key skills by getting involved in the sport.”

Course on Tour

Festival on

Popular Lakes venue back on the PGA schedule

W

indermere is back on the PGA in England and Wales (North) schedule after a

one-year break. The Lakes Classic pro am, which ran for almost three decades, attracted several European Tour professionals including Derrick Cooper, Andrew Murray and Gordon Brand, who complemented the leading regional players over a weekend of action. Arguably one of the most scenic courses in the country, Windermere also hosted the PGA North Region Championship in 1986, which was won by Donald Stirling.

Windermere Golf Club Rayrigg Motors sponsored that and the majority of the ensuing pro ams and the firm’s boss David Smith is responsible for reviving the event, albeit reduced to one round, to be played on July 24. The event’s title has also changed to The Lakeland Classic – named after the local kitchenware business. Smith, the driving force behind the original competition, said: “Martin Rayner, one of the company’s

Wilton Golf Club 18-hole Parkland Course

Situated close to the A19 it is ideally located for visitors from the north and south

directors, is the main sponsor and he suggested we restored it during our club’s annual meeting. Our captain, Clive Matthews, was also desperate to get it going again. “We are hoping to attract 40 fourman teams and we’ve already had a lot of interest so we’re reasonably confident we can reach our target.” Teams cost £275 and entry details can be found at pga.info/PGARegions

Windermere will be one of three Cumbrian golf courses hosting the brand new Lakes Festival three-day am-am event in June. The four-person amateur team competition, which can comprise all men/ladies or mixed, will be played in a stableford format, with Kendal’s Carus Green and Kirkby Lonsdale the other two golf clubs involved on June 12-14. Interest in the competition is already mounting, with the first prize being a golf holiday to Turkey. Bilyana Golf Holidays are the title sponsor and the first prize is a seven-day all-inclusive hotel package with three rounds of golf. “We would like it to be as inclusive as possible, so the make-up of the teams can be any combination of men and ladies.” said club professional Simon Edwards. In 2001, Ulverston became the first club in Cumbria to be home to both the men’s and ladies’ county captains when Terry Rhodes and Beryl Dawson held the positions. Rhodes said: “With Ulverston

Golf Club’s long association with the county in hosting various events, it is no surprise that the club has provided five county captains and two county presidents in the last 14 years. “It is a great honour for the club and I look forward to the continuing support from the other local clubs in my two years of office.” Murtagh added: “I am honoured to have been appointed county captain. In Cumbria we have an exciting future, with so much young talent emerging through our programmes under the expertise of our training officers and professionals.” Edwards, who is in his second year as captain, scored the winning point at Ulverston against Northumberland when Cumbria won the Northern league for the first time in the County’s history in 2002. He has also represented the club for 35 years and has made more than 50 appearances for the county.

Company leading the way in golfing innovation

C

ustom-fit has become the gold standard for the serious golfer when it come to his or her clubs. Gone are the days when it was a matter of guesswork and picking something off the shelf and hoping you had got it right. It’s become pretty big business and leading the way in innovation in the North East is Dynamic Indoor Golf, which is based on the Brunswick Industrial Estate. It is more than custom fitting clubs at Dynamic Golf with a 120sqft chipping green with six bays, a ninehole putting course and custom fitting suite with two GC2 machines and Flightscope plus a fully-equipped retail area. You can also use one of the four simulators and each has 14 courses ready to play. “We have created a facility which will suit all levels of golfers,” said Craig Wayman, the man behind the operation. “We have received fantastic feedback and now consider ourselves as the number one practice facility and custom fit centre in the North East of England. “We have added premium brands such as Srixon, VEGA, United, and XXIO and we are confident that we

have something to suit all levels of golfer. We are also one of only 10 True Temper Performance Fitting Centres in the UK as well as a UST Ultimate Fitting Center. “We are one of the very few operations that the likes of Srixon trust to receive the components and build the clubs on site rather than simply sending them to the customer.” “VEGA Golf has recently been added along with all PGE products and we are really excited about this as the Japanese brand is going from strength to strength, it’s an amazing product and is well worth a look.” A new state-of-the-art open plan workshop opens later this month and golfers will be able to watch their clubs being built and adjusted. Wayman will also be working with some of the top players in the game as well as building clubs for players on the European Tour, Seniors Tour, Challenge Tour and Alps Tour again this year as well as working with Srixon on their Demo Days. He’s one of only 10 Hakusa Golf trained advanced fitters in Europe - he spent several months working closely with the Tour team at Hakusa headquarters in France to gain the title of Master Hakusa Technician.

EAGLESCLIFFE GOLF CLUB Founded 1914

Nestled beside the River Tees with the Cleveland Hills as a backdrop, the course has been described by Golf Monthly magazine as a ‘hidden gem’ of English golf. This 6289 yard James Braid course is both picturesque and demanding due to the nature of the rolling terrain and sloping greens which provides a challenge for both novice and experienced golfers alike. Allendale Golf Club

We start our journey at our most westerly club, Allendale GC, which sits in the Northumberland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The course, which measures 4,681 yards, is framed by rolling hills to the south and west and is a welcome break from the modern courses we often find you require the driver from the tee on all but the par threes. A beautiful course, which is a real pleasure to play – the perfect start to our journey. Allendale Golf Club, High Studdon Allendale, NE47 9DH www.allendale-golf.com

Bellingham Golf Club

We head North to Bellingham, which sits in the heart of the Northumberland National Park, and offers some of the best golf in

Northumberland – in our opinion and the views aren’t bad either! Situated between Hadrian’s Wall and the Scottish border, the layout offers spectacular views extending up the Tyne Valley towards the Border Forest Park and Kielder reservoir. One of the oldest courses in England, Bellingham was founded in 1893 as a nine-hole course. Since then it has been extended to 18 holes, and matured into a stunning track. The par of 70 ensures it remains no pushover, and the signature par four 12th is regarded by many as one of the best short par fours in the North East. For those of you playing the route, a stop over at the Riverdale Hall Hotel is highly recommended.

A hotel with strong links to Bellingham Golf Club, just up the road, it offers a great deal on stay and play packages. Hexham Golf Club

As we venture further East along the A69, we pop into one of our region’s finest clubs. Hexham Golf Club is one of the oldest in England and it remains a course capable of producing a number of the region’s, and England’s, best players. Six-time British Open winner Harry Vardon once described Hexham as, “…as fine an inland course as you can find,” and we would agree with Mr Vardon. A test of golf which is enjoyable at all levels

– from the big-hitting scratch golfer to those new to the game. The quality of Hexham’s greens is respected across the North East – and again we were impressed with their quality so early in the year on our visit. The mature, parkland course also offers stunning views of the North and South Tyne, as well as the surrounding countryside, a warm welcome and excellent food. A regular on our travels, but always worth a visit. Hexham Golf Club, Spital Park Hexham, NE46 3RZ www.hexhamgolf.co.uk

imagine there are few better places to play nine holes on your way home. The tight fairways and small greens mean the driver stays in the bag all the way round the nine-hole loop. The emphasis here is certainly on accuracy – often an iron from the tee is the only way to ensure you’ll have a shot to the green as the tree-flanked fairways are often more than enough intimidation for the wayward among us (no names…of course). Slaley Hall

The highlight of many a trip to Northumberland, the two courses at Slaley Hall are rightly ranked among the very best in our region. Set in more than 1,000 acres of Northumberland moorland and forest, the championship golf courses are stern tests – the Hunting Course has hosted European, European Senior and PGA events in recent years.

The Hunting requires great ability to play anywhere near to your handicap. The front nine is among the toughest stretches in the country, requiring long and straight tee shots, accurate approaches and an excellent putting stroke. The ninth, often switched to the 18th for major events, is widely regarded as one of the toughest par fours you will find in the region. Designed by Dave Thomas, the lush sweeping fairways, rolling moorland, streams and lakes, towering trees and banks of rhododendrons combine to provide an air of peace and tranquillity and a golfing experience you’ll never forget. The resort also offers fine dining, spa breaks, and the chance to relax on the garden terrace with your favourite glass of chilled wine, which makes it the ideal place for us to take another well-earned rest on our travels. long par three is played into the prevailing wind and requires a midlong iron to find the angled green. Having finished in front of the Keepers’ Lodge at Matfen, we make a trip inside to discuss our Tyne Valley adventure…and plan the next one. ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS IN 2015 I am fortunate that my work is spread across different sports and that I get to see how golfers differ in their mental approach to other sportspeople. Recently as well as golfers, I have supported footballers, triathletes and gymnasts, from beginners to professionals, on a one-to-one and group basis. Two things stand out that many golfers do: they do not access support systems as frequently as they should, and when they do access support they are very reactive and seek help only when they have problems. These golfers then often play below average golf and have a good moan. Frustration sets in and they do not make any headway. In 2015, if you wish to really

enjoy your golf and give yourself the best chance of achieving your goals, my advice is to firstly ask yourself some questions. - What do I need to improve on this year? - What area(s) will make the biggest impact? - Who can help me? Then take action! Coaching on your technique is very important, and there are many talented coaches in the area. Seek one out and stick with him or her for the season, booking regular lessons, that way you will be much more consistent. Similarly, on the mental and physical side this guidance also stands and can have a huge impact on your golf game.

The dangers of perfectionism

Meltham homes plan Yorkshire Club Meltham is hoping to convert a derelict listed building into luxury homes having been trying to sell the listed building at Headyfields for seven years. The 200-year-old Grade II barn is now the subject of a planning application to Kirklees Council to convert the building into four houses. The plan also includes 13 parking spaces and an access road. The club tried to have the building de-listed to allow more ways in which

it could be converted, but were turned down by English Heritage. They now argue that converting the building to dwellings will have the least impact. The property was originally part of Joseph Green-Armytage’s Thick Hollins Hall estate, named after the original holly groves on the site. When the course opened in 1908, the building was occupied by the head greenkeeper but since 1933 it has been used to store machinery.

As the days start to lengthen and temperatures begin to rise, our winter projects are drawing to a close. We have completed winter servicing for our machinery, carried out a site survey on our tree saplings and pruned where necessary, and internally extended various paths around the course with plastic hexipath. We have completed the furniture renovation and with the addition of our new trencher machine in autumn last year we have been able to successfully add secondary drainage in low areas and areas of heavy traffic. As spring is nearly with us, we are now looking to make sure we have our plans in place for the upcoming season, such as our fertiliser programs for the course and estates, top dressing materials, and the various chemicals we need to

maintain the course for the rest of the season. These plans allow us to accurately and efficiently control costs and schedule the workload around the ever increasing demands of the course through the busy summer period. Alongside these plans and with the temperatures improving we are starting to see signs of growth and with this our mowing/rolling regime is starting to increase. We are preparing to apply the first scheduled fertiliser application to aid and kick-start new growth. By applying this feed we must be vigilant for signs of a disease threat such as fusarium patch which can occur from warming, damp conditions and lush growth (thin susceptible plant cell walls), and try to keep surfaces as dry as possible to prevent this attack.

Teesside has star quality Paul Corney travels south to experience a wonderful day out at one of our region’s most delightful courses

E

arly in the 19th century, and due to the increase in the size and tonnage of ships using the Tees, navigation became very difficult due to a loop in the river. This resulted in two new channels being dug to cut out the loop and the subsequent land reclaimed from the water became Stockton Racecourse and Teesside Golf Club. Founded in 1901, Teesside Golf Club has gone from strength to strength and with significant investment in new drainage and a major landscaping and refurbishment of 70 bunkers, the course is in pristine condition and great fun to play. 54 NORTHERN GOLFER

During the 1950s and 60s there was a thriving nightclub and theatre scene on Teesside and many famous artists appeared at the many venues in the area. At a request from The Variety Club Golfing Society, these artists were granted courtesy of the course where they could relax, enjoy a round of golf and generally unwind from their hectic schedules. Some of the more notable stars include Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise, Harry Secombe and Arthur Haynes, Roy Castle and Val Doonican to name but a few. If the Teesside club was good enough for them, it’s certainly more than good enough for me!

The opening hole is a short par four measuring 359 yards. Hit the fairway and you will have a short approach and a possible good start to your round - watch out for the water on the right near the green. The second is a good par five and at more than 550 yards it is a true three-shotter for most. A good drive just right of centre, a solid second and a pitch should result in a par. At 397 yards, the sixth is a strong par four played into the prevailing wind. There is out of bounds to the right to watch out for and find the wrong level on the two-tier green and you will be in three-putt country. The seventh is a good par three and at 190 yards can cause problems. The tees are protected by thick trees, making it difficult to judge wind speed and direction. Club selection is all important

FACT FILE CONTACT Teesside Golf Club Acklam Road, Thornaby, Stockton on Tees Cleveland, TS17 7JS Tel 01642 616 516 (secretary) 01642 673 822 (pro shop) teessidegolfclub@btconnect.co

Since the washout season of 2012, Teesside Golf Club has spent a lot of money on new drainage and ponds to prevent the flooding problems suffered on the course. In fact a number of other outside agencies have also been involved, clearing the becks and streams that run near to the course to keep the water moving. This has changed the course dramatically, and last year Teesside was closed only 12 times, of that six days were in January and five days in February.

GREEN FEES Mon-Fri: adults £25 a round (£35 a day), junior £10 a round (£12 a day) Sat-Sun: adults £30 a round, junior £14 a round Group packages available (For details contact the secretary) TOTAL DISTANCE White tees – 6,487 yards Yellow tees – 6,191 yards Red tees – 5,620 – yards at this one, the green is well-bunkered and has a narrow entrance. At 524 yards, the 10th is a par five where you will be faced with a decision for your second shot. Lay up in front of the water to leave a mid-iron to the green. Longer hitters might go for the green in two but very rarely succeed. The 13th is another tough short hole where making a par three may prove difficult. The green is a small target with water in front and bunkered on both sides. Make par and you’ve done well. The 16th is another strong par four, and at 421 yards it requires a good drive to the centre of the fairway avoiding bunkers left and right. Following your round at Teesside you can relax on the balcony overlooking the 18th green - the signature hole (see factfile) - watching others mtackle the tests of the closing hole while planning your next visit to this excellent course.

FEATURES 18 holes parkland golf Easy walking Excellent bar, lounge & dining area Snooker room Sky and BT sports television Good car parking facilities Four practice areas including a covered four-bay driving range Putting green Well-stocked pro shop Buggy hire £20 a round SIGNATURE HOLE It has to be the picturesque 18th – a 410-yard par four with out of bounds to the right and trees left. A good drive to the centre of the fairway should leave a short to middle iron to the huge final green. Watch out for the pond in front of the green.

PAUL CORNEY’S VERDICT

Teesside is always beautifully presented and a credit to Head Greenkeeper Gary Evans and his team - it is a great test of golf and a real treat to play.

ith the Masters in Augusta comes the start of the new golf season, and the imminent return of the Northern Golfer Gents Match Play Pairs. Now in its fourth year, this year’s event is set to be the biggest yet with golfers from across the North East and Yorkshire competing for the trophy and a trip to the NE/NW PGA Overseas Pro-Am in Portugal in November. The deadline for entries has been extended to April 30, and all you need to do to book your place in the first round, which will be drawn ahead of the May edition, is fill in the form left. This season, the Match Play semi finals will be played at Wynyard Golf Club and the final is at Ramside Hall Golf Club. This year’s winners will receive

places in the NE/NW pro am to be staged on the Algarve later this year and organised by Kevin Batty from Golfing Holidays. Last year, Peter Gallagher and Neil Walmsley from Durham City Golf Club were our champions. Peter said: “This is a great competition and obviously to win it was a great feeling. It is well organised and we both have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Everybody we played against was very welcoming and it was great to get courtesy when playing away, taking part in the semis at Ramside and of course the final at Tyneside. “The prize itself was excellent and I would recommend to everyone to enter and have a go – it was just great.” Neil added: “I cannot fault anything about the competition, it was played in great spirit.”

Ladies Greensomes 2015

W

ith the growth in popularity of the Gents Match Play Pairs event, this season Northern Golfer has added the Ladies Greensomes Championship – giving ladies from Northumberland, Durham, Teesside and North Yorkshire the opportunity to compete in a pairs knock out event. The Northern Golfer Ladies Greensomes Championship, sponsored by Matfen Hall, will be played throughout the season, with entries open now. The event will see pairs of ladies, who are active members of golf clubs with a handicap of 36 or less and aged over 18, compete in knockout matchplay rounds at courses around the region ahead of the semi finals and final at Matfen Hall, Northumberland in September. The winning pair will receive a

two-night stay for four people at Matfen Hall, which includes dinner, bed and breakfast, use of the spa facilities and two rounds of golf as well as the championship trophy. Peter Smith, golf club manager at Matfen Hall, says: “We are delighted to be working with Northern Golfer to launch an event specifically for the region’s lady golfers. “We are working hard to promote participation in ladies golf, both to beginners and active club members; with the number of active players decreasing nationally, we think it is vital to grow the game in any way we can. “The prize includes two nights in our award-winning hotel, use of the excellent new spa facilities and golf on our 27-hole championship layout. “It is worth in excess of £500 and I am sure our inaugural winners will be very happy to collect the prize.”

ACCURACY EQUALS DISTANCE When a golfer first gets to use a system like FlightScope or TrackMan, their first question is often, ‘how fast is my swing?’ However, clubhead speed is just one element that contributes to the distance you hit the ball. Ball speed is the figure which you should be concentrating on. As you can see in the table below, creating a higher ball speed (which is a combination of clubhead speed and smash factor) is key to hitting the ball further. My advice is to work on finding the centre of the club more often, rather than solely focusing on increasing clubhead speed. Work with your coach on finding the centre of the club - accuracy in the strike will increase how far you carry the ball. SMASH FACTOR

*Based on clubhead speed of 100mph, with a launch angle of 15 degrees, 3,000rpm of spin, and at sea level.

FIND THE CENTRE Smash factor (the percentage increase from clubhead speed to ball speed) is influenced by which part of the clubface strikes the ball - a strike from the centre will produce the highest smash factor

GET CUSTOM FIT A driver fitting will allow you to find out more about your swing than just its speed. It will allow you to try different clubheads to find the “hottest” face for you (the one which produces the highest smash consistently) as well as creating the right launch angle and spin characteristics - also imporatant in producing your maximum driving distance

PRACTICE There’s no secret to finding the centre of the club regularly; you just have to get out there and practise. Get some advice and drills from your coach, then get out there and hit some balls!

from the

bunker NG: Last month we featured three young golfers being mentored by European Tour pro Graeme Storm - Cameron Wallace, Jack Ainsworth and Will Skipp. Jack’s dad John has been in touch. He said: The picture captions were wrong as it has Jack’s name on Will’s pic and vice versa. The write up is lovely but a bit disappointing as he has had a number of calls from friends pointing it out and Jack is also a bit disappointed. And so is the editor as the names of each were on their jackets in the photo. Sincere apologies and here is the picture again. Cameron is on the left, Will at the front and Jack on the right. Graeme is the one with the hat!

Welcome to your reader feedback page. We want to hear your likes, dislikes and funny golfing stories, and if you’d like to make suggestions about Northern Golfer, let us know. We want to hear from you!

NG: Geoff Dunn, chairman of the Durham County Veterans Golf Association has been in touch. He wrote: The association requires Golfers who are members of clubs within the County Golf Union remit who are over 55 years and who have a handicap of five or under. Any member with the above credentials would be eligible to play for the County Seniors team against the Northern Counties. Anyone interested please contact the Secretary. Clyde Camp Telephone No. 01388 766744 for further information.

NG: It’s not every day that you pop into the locker room to change your shoes and find the club captain halfway up a step ladder with a paint brush in his hand but Beamish Park’s Rob Pattison has been doing his bit ahead of the start of the season. Pattison, 56, a retired police officer who has been a member of Beamish since he was a teenager. He said: “Golf can have an elitist image but the reality is nearly all our members are working lads and the community spirit is no different to what you would find at a football or cricket club. I am handy with a paint brush, so why not?”

Rob Pattison

And finally thanks to @andyhise on Twitter. Remarkable photo evidence has emerged that Star Wars creator George Lucas has turned his back on Hollywood and is now cutting the greens at Chichester Golf Club. If you spot any lookalikes on your course do let us know (and send us a picture)
