EDITOR’S NOTE AND CONTENTS Welcome to the last Northern Golfer for 2015 and the first of 2016! Whether you are reading this magazine preparing for Christmas and New Year or having already enjoyed it, we hope you are enjoying/ have enjoyed the festive period. This edition’s cover star, Chris Pascall, is a remarkable lady. She has enjoyed a fabulous run as England captain and has helped so many young girls on the road to stardom, and she shows no signs of letting up. Indeed, girl power features a great deal in these pages with Laura Harvey from Castle Eden hoping to make it on tour while Malton & Norton ladies are celebrating success in the Mail on Sunday Classic. One of the stories which most interested those in the Northern Golfer office appears on page four, where we explore the latest set of changes to teh Rules of Golf and CONGU’s handicapping system. The high handicappers amongst us are delighted to see from January 1 the allowance in fourball betterball is 90% as opposed to three-quarters, though those in single figures are having a bit of a whinge. Two golfers who don’t have to worry about such things are Ryder Cup legends Bernard Gallacher and Ken Brown who have both been in the region recently, graciously giving up some of their time to chat to us. Their trips to Blackwell Grange and Chester-le-Street respectively were well received - find out what they had to say in our Teeing Off section. Paul Corney has been up to gorgeous Goswick to review the course while we also take a look at some of the great places to play and stay in 2016 in a special feature starting on page 33. We also have plenty of offers and deals for you through our advertisers, whose support ensures we produce 10 magazines for your enjoyment every year. And consider entering our Gents Matchplay Pairs (entry form page 20) or Ladies Greensomes (next issue) for great prizes at great courses. We are incredibly lucky to live in such a fantastic part of the world, with so many brilliant courses - why not make it a New Year’s resolution to try a few you haven’t yet enjoyed. Happy golfing New Year to you all.

TEEINGOFF CONGU 2016 changes

28/36Plus Handicaps

The existing handicap category boundaries are unchanged, but new ‘club’ handicaps allow men to receive more than 28 shots and ladies more than 36. This handicap will only be valid at the player’s home club and cannot be used in opens etc.

4BBB 90% The allowance for fourball betterball has been increased from ¾ to 90%. That means a 12-handicapper playing in a betterball event will now receive 11 shots rather than eight.

Continuous handicap reviews A new process will flag players who notch up seven consecutive 0.1 handicap increases, allowing their Handicap Committees to review and apply an immediate handicap increase if required.

Nine hole qualifying scores If you score better than, or within, buffer you will have 18 points added to create an 18-hole score. If your score returned is outside buffer, it will be doubled. Nine hole scores will also be included in the Exceptional Scoring Reductions process.

Supplementary scores Supplementary scores may now be returned at all GB&I clubs of which a player is a member, and are acceptable over nine holes for handicap categories of two and above, while there is no limit for handicaps 28/36 to 54.

Exceptional Scoring Reductions The ESR table has been amended to reduce severity of reductions, and ESRs will only be applied based on a pair of exceptional scores. 04 NORTHERN GOLFER

Rules/handicap changes for 2016 With the R&A and USGA announcing the publication of the 2016 edition of the Rules of Golf, and CONGU making changes to the way handicaps are applied, here’s everything you need to know before January 1 No more penalties for a gust of wind Withdrawal of rule on ball moving after address Rule 18-2b (Ball Moving After Address) has been withdrawn. This means that if a ball at rest moves after the player addresses it, the player is no longer automatically deemed to have caused the ball to move. A one-stroke penalty under Rule 18-2 will be applied only when the facts show that the player has caused the ball to move. TV replays no longer judge and jury Limited exception to disqualification penalty for submission of incorrect score card A new exception has been introduced to Rule 6-6d (Wrong Score for Hole) so that a player is not disqualified for returning a lower score for a hole than actually taken as a result of failing to include penalty strokes that the player did not know were incurred before returning the score card. Instead, the player incurs the penalty under the Rule that was breached and must add an additional penalty of two strokes for the score card error. All other cases of returning a lower score than taken continue to mean disqualification.

Anchoring ban Prohibition on anchoring the club while making a stroke As announced to much debate from many of the world’s top players in May 2013, the new Rule 141b (Anchoring the Club) prohibits anchoring the club either “directly” or by use of an “anchor point” in making a stroke. The penalty is loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play.

Laura has Tour in her sights Castle Eden pro follows her dream

L

aura Harvey hopes to take the next step in her budding professional career this month by making it on to the Ladies European Tour. The 28-year-old Castle Eden pro decided to take a step-by-step approach when she turned pro in October 2009 after a successful amateur career playing for England and Yorkshire. She decided to train as a PGA Professional and gain a degree in golf studies at Birmingham University. Having finished the course, she is now heading off to Morocco for the first stage of the LET qualifying school at the Mohammedia club. If she gets through the prequalifying, Laura then goes on to compete in final qualifying at the

Amelkis and Samanah courses for her 2016 Tour card. “This has been my dream for such a long time,” said Laura, “I’d like to say a huge thank you to Castle Eden Golf Club and the members who have supported me and are helping me along the road to achieving my lifetime ambition. I will be proud to wear the club logo on my clothing. “I have been working extremely hard on my swing with my coach John Harrison at Matfen Hall and feel it is in a great place - there’s always work to be done but I feel confident. I’ve also been working with Rachael Tibbs of Dynamic Golf on my fitness.” Laura created history four years ago when she became the first female pro to play in the PGA North

Laura Harvey Region Championship. She was assistant pro at Darlington at the time before linking up with Tim Jenkins at Cleveland and now Castle Eden where she has achieved full class AA professional status. Highlights of her amateur career included representing England and Yorkshire in four English County Finals victories and winning the Northern Girls’ Championship

as well as winning the LGU Gold Medal, captaining England Schools and reaching the semi-finals of the English Women’s Championship. But it’s the progress she has made at pro level which makes many think she is ready for the next step after strong finishes in WPGA and LET Access events, and the Ladies Glenmuir PGA Championship.

Ronnie’s half century

Ronnie Butler Fifty years on, Ronnie Butler still gets up at the crack of dawn and is on the golf course at Wilton by 5.30am to make sure it is fit for the members. “I just love it,” said Ronnie who has no intention of retiring even though he is 65, and to mark his 50 year achievement the club will be holding a special celebration. “Working on the golf course is just great. I like nothing better than sorting out things like drainage - my wife reckons I should have been a gravedigger! “When I left school at 15 I went to work in a factory and hated it. I went to the Jobcentre and told them I wanted to work on a farm, but the job at Wilton came along and it was the next best thing for me. I really do enjoy being out in the open air and working on the golf course.”

tuart Imeson will swap the Northumberland dunes of Embleton for the Stadium Course at Sawgrass in May. The 24-year-old Dunstanburgh Castle head greenkeeper will be making the trip to the USA for the The Players Championship - often dubbed the fifth major - thanks to the Sawgrass Volunteer Initiative sponsored by John Deere. BIGGA has chosen Stuart as their representative from the Northern Region after “a challenging application and interview process.” He made his way through after impressing the interview panel against a very high standard of applicants. “I cannot believe this is happening,” said Stuart. “This will be a career changing experience for me. Thank you so much to BIGGA and John Deere for providing this opportunity for greenkeepers like myself.” He will join the volunteer greenkeeping team at the TPC Sawgrass for the build-up to the tournament and the event itself which takes

place on May 10-16 2016. It’s not the first time, Stuart - and his young greenkeeping team at Dunstanburgh - have been in the news, having won two national awards and also having to call in the Army bomb disposal squad earlier this year. Stuart was named 2014 IOG/BIGGA Young Greenkeeper of the Year while his staff - James Thorpse and Dan Wilkin - won Greens Team of the Year. He took over the reins at Dunstanburgh at the tender age of 18 and last year both he and James were selected to work at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. Stuart, who has also worked at the Open Championship at Hoylake, was born in Embleton and as a golf-mad youngster he became a member of the club at the age of 12. At 16, he became an assistant greenkeeper under the guidance of Simon Olver. When Olver moved on to Percy Wood, he put Stuart’s name forward for the position of head greenkeeper at the age of just 18.

Tour de force North East and Yorkshire well represented in Europe’s top flight

T

he European Tour is back underway. Rory McIlroy won the World Tour Championship and the Race to Dubai to sign off 2015, just four days before the 2016 season began in South Africa. As Europe’s elite competed for the bonus pool and the Race to Dubai crown, professionals from across our region headed to the final stage of European Tour Qualifying School – a six round marathon at PGA Catalunya Resort in Spain. Each was aiming to secure a place in the top 25, and a European Tour card, to join players including Chris Paisley, Graeme Storm, Robert Dinwiddie, Matthew Fitzpatrick, and Harrogate’s John Parry at Europe’s top table. After six gruelling rounds, with

a year of playing for some of golf ’s biggest prizes on the line, two Yorkshiremen secured tour cards. Daniel Gavins, who lost in a playoff at the PGA EuroPro’s tour championship weeks earlier to miss out on a card for the Challenge Tour through its order of merit, secured his card with a six-round total of 12 under-par (71-65-66-68-75-71). Harrogate’s Chris Hanson made harder work of it - finishing on seven under-par after six rounds and securing the final card available for this season. Following a strong start and comfortably making the cut after the fourth round, Hanson fell back through the pack with a closing round of six over-par 78, which included pars at his final three holes. He said: “I’m speechless, I really

Graeme Storm don’t know what to say. I tried to enjoy the last two rounds because I had nothing to lose. This has been a really tough year for me and the doors this is going to open will be life changing.”

Matt Fitz the bill Sensational season sees yet another award for one of golf ’s rising stars

Y

orkshireman Matt Fitzpatrick’s stunning victory in the British Masters earned him the Hilton European Tour Golfer of the Month award for October. In his first full season on The European Tour, Sheffield’s Fitzpatrick belied his tender years with a nerveless display on the final day at Woburn, closing with a round of 68 to take the title by two shots from Soren Kjeldsen, Shane Lowry and Fabrizio Zanotti. It was Fitzpatrick’s maiden victory less than a year after turning professional, and confirmed the potential he had shown when winning the 2013 US Amateur Championship and subsequently climbing to the number one spot in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. In his next outing after his win at Woburn, at the UBS Hong Kong Open at the end of October, the 21-year-old secured his sixth top-three

finish in a consistent season which saw him climb into the top 15 of The Race to Dubai. Fitzpatrick said: “This is great. I’ve seen other players win the award throughout the season, so to have a trophy of my own is pretty special. “It’s really nice to pick up any award, and while I can’t say it’s something I set my sights on winning, it’s a very nice achievement. It was a very special week at the British Masters and then winning this award is a very nice bonus.” Fitzpatrick’s fellow Englishman Andy Sullivan took second place after securing his third victory of the season with a nine-stroke triumph at the Portugal Masters while Justin Rose took third . Fitzpatrick joins compatriot Danny Willett, Gary Stal, Anirban Lahiri, Richie Ramsay, Wu Ashun, Byeong-Hun An, Alex Noren, Shane Lowry and Lee Slattery (September) as the contenders for The 2015 European Tour Golfer of the Year.

KENBROWN

TV times The public face of Ken Brown is that of golf commentator and analyst for the BBC. He understands better than most The R&A’s decision to award live Open Championship broadcasting rights to Sky rather than the BBC. Many were dismayed when golf’s governing body announced a new fiveyear deal with the broadcaster. It also emerged the BBC bid less than £10m – £5m short of the Sky figure – but did choose to invest £204m to secure Match of the Day. Brown, who has worked on the BBC’s golf coverage for the best part of 20 years, said: “I know many people feel what’s happened with the BBC and the Open is very disappointing in that they’re not doing the main coverage, but the BBC is still doing the highlights - and it’s a decent highlights programme. “Okay, it’s not the same as going out live but it’s still there for the viewer to see. I reckon I’ll still be doing the same amount of golf as I have done in the last three or four years, but less of it will be live. “It may be a little easier and a little less rewarding but that’s life. It’s a change of emphasis and it’s about cost. Sport is an important part of the BBC portfolio but there are so many other sports that they have to do. “There will still be golf on the BBC and Sky do a super job and that’s how it is.” Brown has a book on the market: One Putt – The Ultimate Guide to Perfect Putting, published by Hamlyn, and given he was an acknowledged master on the greens, it’s worth a read. He played in five Ryder Cups, was vice-captain to Mark James in 1999, won four times on the European Tour and once in the USA, so he knows his way around the game and he believes professional golf is very much on the up. “Pro golf is in very rude health,” he said. “Club golf has had a bit of a struggle in a lot of places but it is starting to come back and people are starting to play a bit more. “It’s good to see the Open going to Portrush and the British Masters back on the scene - it should be coming up to the North East - and I’d like to see more tournaments in the UK.” 10 NORTHERN GOLFER

John Nicholson, Ken Brown and Ken Moodie at Chesterle-Street Golf Club

Course can be Streets ahead Ken Brown aims to help Chester-le-Street to new heights

R

yder Cup golfer Ken Brown has seen - and played - some of the world’s best courses. He’s also worked on planning, constructing and improving a host of courses and Chester-le-Street is banking on the expertise he brings with Creative Golf Design partner Ken Moodie and North East-based John Nicholson Associates to move its Lumley Park layout into the 21st Century. Chester has been through some hard times in common with many other clubs, but after a couple of difficult years it turned things around with a prudent use of resources, enhancing green fees income, forming a partnership with the nearby Lumley Castle Hotel - which overlooks the course and investing in machinery. Chester held a members meeting recently to unveil a course development plan put together by the trio, who have carried out a comprehensive review. The course has been improved with the

acquisition of land alongside the River Wear on which six new holes have been built. They provided an interesting contrast to the upper part of the course and have proved popular. However the club felt a full review was needed and the trio have come up with plans to improve bunkering, restoring some wonderful views of the river and the wider landscape, and providing a more unified parkland character to the course. Nicholson has also been looking at ways to improve the landscape and ecology of the site, using the experience he has gained on hundreds of projects worldwide. “The club has taken on quite an ambitious project and it is to be congratulated for that,” said Brown. “This is a cracking members’ club with a nice course and a nice clubhouse - it’s a great environment to play golf. They have everything going for them and they are making sure they keep their eye on the ball. “Golf clubs find themselves in an interesting situation. If you’re standing still, you’re actually

John Nicholson, Ken Brown and Ken Moodie with Chester-leStreet Golf Club officials and greenkeeping staff going backwards. That doesn’t mean golf courses have to be more difficult or longer because of the new equipment and the fact the ball is going further, but golf courses have to evolve with management plans covering a five or six-year period to make sure they know where they are going. “You need your course and club to be a place where people want to come and visit, play and enjoy. We’re very much of the school that golf should be enjoyed. For the vast majority of people, playing the game is an interesting challenge. It’s a marvellous game but difficult and if we make it more difficult to get round and lose more golf balls, they will enjoy it less. It has to be a nice experience and this course is certainly that.” The trio’s plan is to make the golfing experience more enjoyable and to introduce strategic bunkering to develop the challenge and make the course more interesting and rewarding to play for

the lower handicappers. It has lovely views, a river and a course with lots of variety. The club know there are a lot of things you have to keep your eye on it, to keep it up to standard and the best way to do that is in five-year sections,” added Brown. “Of course, there is always the question of finance, but the best starting point is a good plan. “Once you have that you can work on sections of it when the money is available. I’d say having a decent plan is critical and Chester-le-Street deserve credit for seeing the value in doing that.” The work on the course will be carried out in stages after members approved the plan. Originally designed by two Open Championship winners in Sandy Herd and Ted Ray, the course has developed throughout its history and is expected to develop further in the next five years.

TOUR LIFE OFF SEASON WITH EUROPEAN TOUR PLAYER CHRIS PAISLEY

I’m now in the period of my season which is, in a lot of ways, my favourite - the off-season. I have seven weeks until my first tournament of the New Year, which is a nice amount of time to put in some hard work. Fortunately, there are no major overhauls required, but there is always room for improvement. One area I am going to focus on is my driving. The old cliche “Drive for show, putt for dough” is nonsense. In the modern game, it is crucial to get yourself in position off the tee. You do not need to be long (although it does help), but driving the ball consistently in the fairway makes the rest of the hole much easier. The improvements will come from working with my coach ‘Nico’ (Andrew Nicholson) on the technical aspect, but also my trainer, Kenny McKenzie. Some hard work in the gym will help my body to better cope with the demands of driving the ball longer and straighter. Driving isn’t going to be my sole focus though. I am ranked 450th in the world so there is room for improvement elsewhere. We will be working hard to find marginal gains in my swing, physique, mentality, putting, chipping, bunker play, temperament…you get the idea! As I have said before, the margins are so fine in this game. You see guys like Matt Fitzpatrick who suddenly take off. It is the result of all these marginal gains taking them to a tipping point, where they reach a level they hadn’t before. I have managed to get over the hurdle of keeping my tour card, now I want to get over the hurdle of winning tournaments. The off season is also the time where I can enjoy the normal things in life. I am looking forward to spending time with my wife in our new apartment in Orlando, and some family time in England over Christmas. I am also the best man at a wedding at the end of December, so it’s about time to get started on the speech! Talk about being out of your comfort zone! Have a great Christmas everybody. I hope you all enjoy some quality time with your loved ones. Here’s to a great 2016!

Yorkshire club’s ladies triumph in national newspaper tournament

E

mma Brown rates Malton and Norton’s victory in the Mail on Sunday Classic as one of her greatest achievements. Emma, along with Judy Butler, Carol Simpson, Jean Mackenzie, Wendy Jackson and Jackie Roberts had to dig deep in the final over Spain’s El Rompido course to win 3.5-1.5 against Gosport. And Emma, who played for Great Britain and Ireland in three Curtis Cup campaigns as Emma Duggleby and won the 1994 British Amateur title plus two English Amateur crowns, places this victory is right up there with them all.

“It’s definitely as special. It’s the biggest achievement for the club,” said Emma, who has played at the Yorkshire course since the age of 12. As well as getting through nine rounds to take their place in the finals at the El Rompido resort, Malton knew all about the pressure having lost in three previous quarter-finals. A 5-0 win in the semis then victory after coming from behind in the final against Gosport put all that to bed. They were cheered on by 30 club members who made the journey to Spain to support them in the final stages and it is the first time the club, which was formed 115 years

Malton and Norton’s victorious ladies team: Judy Butler, Carol Simpson, Emma Brown, Jean Mackenzie, Wendy Jackson and Jackie Roberts ago, has won the title. Managing secretary Richard Jagger said: “This really rounds of a wonderful year for the golf club. The ladies have done us proud and have

been absolutely magnificent from start to finish. I hope this victory inspires more women and girls to take up the game of golf at Malton and Norton Golf Club.”

Legend makes a great impression on visit to the region

I

t’s a measure of the man that Bernard Gallacher wouldn’t accept a fee for making the journey north to open Blackwell Grange’s new clubhouse and driving range. Gallacher happily agreed to travel to Darlington and open the new facilities at the club where he has been an honorary member for many years. He spent most of the day with cub members reminiscing about times he has played the course when in the area visiting his wife’s family. “We’ve invited him back to play the course in the future and he has said that he will next time he’s in the area,” said general manager Ian Knight. “We offered to cover all Bernard’s

travel expenses, but he refused any payment at all, saying that it was an honour to be asked. “Some people probably thought we paid a lot of money to get him here, when it didn’t cost us anything. What a true gentleman he is!” Gallacher was impressed with the new set-up and gave a witty and entertaining speech to the packed clubhouse. “The facilities are terrific,” he said, “and the club has a future and I think that’s the important thing. “I’m told that the Blackwell Grange site across the road had a future that was quite tenuous because of a short lease and I’m pleased that everything seems to have worked out

with the deal done here. The future of the golf club lies in the youngsters, you really have to get the kids involved. I’m pleased to say there’s a lot of activity to promote youngsters golf here at the club and in Durham and Teesside. “I do wish everyone

the best. It’s not been very far to come across the road but there’s plenty of scope for development here and I think the future’s secure. “I hope I can come back and hit a few balls and play a few holes and I wish everyone the best.”

Youth is the key Bernard Gallacher won 22 tournaments worldwide and has also won on the European Seniors Tour. He’s convinced the future is bright with young stars coming through. “Matthew Fitzpatrick is only 21 and there’s more youngsters coming through after Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth...there’s a long list of them. It is a young person’s game. Jason Day is only 27 and has made it to world number one. Getting the youngsters in to a club like Blackwell Grange is the key. “The American circuit is so strong because of the money, but we have won seven Ryder Cups out of the last eight so the future is good. “Matthew was saying he’s not thinking about the Ryder Cup at the moment, but I would say Darren Clarke will be looking seriously at him because he will not be afraid. He is brave and is a wonderful tee-to-green player. It came as no surprise to me that Matthew broke through. He will go far. He is not a power player, but

We’re Open

is a down the middle player.Eddie Pepperell is also a wonderful player, as are Danny Willett and Tommy Fleetwood, and it will be a great Ryder Cup next year.” Gallacher also insists there are players in the North East who could join that list. “Golfers should not be scared to leave the North East and get out and play the Challenge Tour, Alp Tour...the facilities here are good, but you need warm-weather training. “Many of the other guys don’t have a winter these days because it has become a world tour, not a European Tour. It’s hard to keep it going up here in the winter, but your competitors are playing all year round. You have to go off and compete in warm weather and not be scared to travel. “Graeme Storm is a very good striker of the ball. He has always had the potential to get to the top. If he can do it one round then he can do it for four rounds. He is certainly still young enough to get somewhere and do something more.”

lose House head professional Jonathan Lupton has taken over as managing director of the club following the departure of John Glendinning. Lupton, a former GB&I Walker Cup player and a regular winner on the NE/NW PGA circuit, will head up the club, which is owned by North East entrepreneur Graham Wylie. Lupton, who has been head professional at the club for seven years - helping to secure PGA Academy status in 2015, said: “I’m incredibly honoured to be offered the opportunity to follow in John’s footsteps. I’m looking forward to developing into the role with Graham’s support. It will be a challenge to make the move into the business and I’ll be reducing my playing commitments, but with a young family it is a fantastic time to make the move and develop a new set of skills.” Lupton will head up a team which has remained mostly unchanged since he joined the club. “We have such a strong core here, I’m sure we will continue to push the

resort forward and build on the great achievements John and Graham have made in its first 11 years.” Lupton replaces Glendinning, who joined Close House in 2004 after Wylie purchased the site from Newcastle University. He oversaw the construction of the Lee Westwood Colt Course, one of the UK’s Top 100 Courses, the redesign of the Lee Westwood Filly and saw the staff grow to more than 70. Glendinning, who has taken a new role with The Wisley in Surrey, said: “There were so many highlights in my time with Close House – from the development of the Lee Westwood Colt Course to the incredible amount of money raised through the Have a Heart charity golf days. To have the trust of Graham at the age of 27 was incredible and I will always be thankful for the opportunity he gave me. “To grow the club from just me and a Portakabin to a full-time staff of more than 70 dedicated and highly skilled people has been an incredible experience. I will remember my time at Close House for the rest of my life.”

Gorgeous Goswick Paul Corney takes a trip north and discovers one of the finest courses in Northern England

G

reat Britain and Ireland are blessed with coastlines which have been shaped by the sea over the centuries to leave stunning locations for golf courses. One of the best coastline stretches can be found a few miles south of Berwick-upon -Tweed, the home of Goswick Links Golf Club. Starting at Cocklawburn Beach and running south past Cheswick to Goswick and on towards Lindisfarne, this championship links course is an experience you will never forget. The views from the course are stunning with the Cheviots, Holy Island and Bamburgh Castle all in sight while the Low Lammermuir hills dominate the skyline. Add to this the wonderful Northumberland coastline with its varied wildlife and the result is a perfect setting for a golf course. Typical of many

18 NORTH EAST GOLFER

links designs, the course has two nine-hole loops, one to the north of the clubhouse and the other to the south. It is fairly easy walking, but for those not wanting to partake in a little exercise, there are buggies available for hire. The club professional, Paul Terras has been at Goswick since 1991, offering a first-class service both in the well-stocked golf shop and on the more than adequate practice range adjacent to the course. The first is a difficult opening hole – a par four at nearly 400 yards. The key here is the tee shot, so take my advice and hit a few balls on the range to get warmed up. Aim the drive over the fairway bunker on the right and you should find the centre of the fairway. The hole then dog-legs right around a copse of trees and rises to an elevated green, where

at least one extra club is needed to find the putting surface. The par three second is all about distance control. Select the right club and you should be putting for birdie however, make a wrong decision and trouble awaits. The green slopes back to front and has a small bunker back left waiting to catch any pulled tee shots. At 414 yards, the third is the first of five strong par fours; they are all more than 400 yards. The drive is played from an elevated tee to a fairway which dog-legs right. Aim slightly left of the bunker on the right, 236 yards from the tee and you will be left with a long approach to a green defended by a bunker front right. Again, consider taking an extra club to eliminate the trouble short of the green. The fourth hole is a par five measuring 545 yards and another dog-leg right. There is a nest of three bunkers on the right to be wary of - you will need a carry of at least 200 yards to clear them. Play to the left side of the fairway and a well struck second shot should leave a shortish approach to a tricky narrow green, sloping steeply back to front. There are two bunkers front right and a deep bunker front left defending this green, so having a go in two may well end in disaster. The fifth is another tough par four and at 418

COURSEREVIEW

FACT FILE yards uphill, plays longer than its yardage. With the fairway sloping left to right, aim up the left side and let the ball gather back to the centre. It’s a tough second shot, but if you take enough club and avoid the two deep bunkers at the front, the approach should find the green. With out of bounds along the right, a copse of trees also on the right and a number of green side bunkers, the par three final hole on the front nine is no easy touch. I have played Goswick a number of times and never managed to card a three. Because it’s flat, the distance is difficult to gauge, so select a club and trust your judgement. The back nine starts with a 421-yard par four. There is trouble on the right, aim left centre of the fairway to find the best position. Take care with the bunker front right of the green, it is about 60 yards short of the putting surface and can easily deceive you into under-clubbing. Next is the longest hole on the course, and at 559 yards from the championship tees can be a real tester. There are some serious humps and hollows in the fairway, out of bounds on the right and a lateral water hazard on the left. If that’s not enough, there is a very well placed fairway bunker 65 yards short of a green that slopes right to left. Some testing holes follow, including the signature 14th (see factfile), before a chance for glory at the last – a 269-yard par four. If you decide to go for it, be aware as out of bounds is on the right, while there’s a nasty cross bunker 30 yards short of the green and a further five bunkers surrounding a putting surface which slopes back to front and left to right. You could always lay up to leave a short chip and a very good chance of finishing with a birdie.

The club was founded in 1889 following a meeting in the Kings Arms Assembly Rooms, Hide Hill, Berwick. Famous golf architect James Braid was then commissioned to design and layout the first nine holes which opened for play a year later. In 1894 another nine holes were added. In 1964, the original nine were modified by Frank Pennick to give extra yardage. Since then the course has remained very much the same but in recent years, further length has been added bringing Goswick up to full Championship length, resulting in the course being selected to host Qualifying for the Open Championship.

TOTAL DISTANCE Blue tees – 6,803 yards White tees – 6,654 yards Yellow tees – 6,467 yards Red tees – 5,718 yards FEATURES 18-hole championship links course Driving range Putting green Bar, restaurant and lounge CADDY’S TIP Goswick is a true links course where you have to take into account the everchanging sea breezes, the humps and hollows – you need a good all round game to play this course well. SIGNATURE HOLE The14th is a slight dog-leg right. The most aggressive line is over the righthand bunker but you will need a carry of some 235 yards to clear it. The second shot to this 393 yard par four is played to a severely sloping green at the bottom of some large dunes. Miss on the right and the ball stays up there, even Phil Mickleson would struggle to get down in three! A great hole.

OUR VERDICT One of Northumberland’s best courses and a must-play venue for every golfer. Take a moment to relax and reflect in the clubhouse before deciding when to return to take on this superb course again

This is the chance for golfers from across the North of England to play different courses, meet other regular golf enthusiasts and enjoy a golf tournament that has been running since 2002. In 2015, the final was staged at Ramside Hall Golf Club and played over the Prince Bishops course, where no one could have predicted how close

this match would be - the pressure on all four players was immense. Ian Irving and Gary Foxwell from Arcot Hall Golf Club eventually won the the 2015 title at the 25th hole. Following the match, Tournament Organiser for Northern Golfer Paul Corney said: “I have overseen the finals of these knock-out tournaments for many years and I do have to say, that this final was the best by a long way and the quality of the golf played was simply brilliant. I can only congratulate all four players who took part and it was a pity one team had to loose. “This is a very popular tournament and over the years there have been some great teams taking the trophy. Many players enter every year and thoroughly enjoy their matches, making new friends along the way and playing new courses throughout the North of England.” To enter, fill in the application form and send it to the Tournament Organiser, Northern Golfer Match Play Pairs, Offstone Publishing, Unit 1 Bearl Farm, Stocksfield Northumberland, NE43 7AL

EAGLESCLIFFE GOLF CLUB Founded 1914

Nestled beside the River Tees with the Cleveland Hills as a backdrop, the course has been described by Golf Monthly magazine as a ‘hidden gem’ of English golf. This 6289 yard James Braid course is both picturesque and demanding due to the nature of the rolling terrain and sloping greens which provides a challenge for both novice and experienced golfers alike. Bay goes for green honour Club is finalist in national environmental awards

W

hitley Bay is in the running for the Environmental Golf Course of the Year. The Northumberland club is one of four finalists announced by the Sports Turf Research Institute and is up against Pyecombe, Bedfordshire and Machrihanish Dunes. The winner will be announced in January at Hotel de Vin, Harrogate along with the Conservation Greenkeeper of the Year and Outstanding Environmental Project of the Year. Bob Taylor, STRI senior consultant, said: “The Golf Environment Awards provide an important platform in which we can demonstrate the excellent work of golf clubs and the commitment of the industry as a whole in the protection and conservation of our depleting countryside.” Whitley Bay has been pursuing ambitious plans to improve the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth holes with Jonathan Gaunt responsible for the design and Nathan Stone, who worked on the construction of the Cathedral Course at Ramside, involved in the project which has been overseen by Whitley course manager Simon Olver and the club’s management board. Olver describes the new holes as “seamless and free flowing” and the club has continued other

course work, improvements and innovations which included engaging golf course ecology consultant James Hutchinson. The remodelling work on the four holes has involved building two new greens, bunkering and tees, extensive mounding and planting of trees of gorse as well as a significant outlay on new machinery, none of which would have been possible without the generosity of club member Alan Anderson. Originally on the links at Whitley Bay and opening in 1890, the club later moved inland but retains the feel of a links course with the sea constantly in view and the lighthouse at St Mary’s Island visible. It’s hard to believe some parts of the course were originally opencast mining and in 1977 it hosted the Callers Tournament, a pre-European Tour event. The event featured a young Seve Ballesteros and Greg Norman, and was won by the South African John Fourie. Despite celebrating its 125th anniversary, Whitley is certainly not stuck in the past thanks to a forwardlooking board of management which has been active in initiatives such as Cafe Golf to boost the ladies section plus a number of promotional activities with local schools and coaching which has led to the award of GolfMark.

CAPTAINMARVEL

Passionate Pascall Dean Bailey meets Durham and England’s Chris Pascall whose love of the game is helping to develop talented youngsters

A

rriving in the foyer of Hartlepool Golf Club, your first sight is an honours board tracking the national and international successes of some of our region’s best players. The list includes Graeme Bell, Alex Wrigley and young Jack Ainscough, as well as the achievements of Graeme Storm – from his days as an England Boys debutant to his win in the French Open. Alongside those names is that of Chris Pascall. C. Williamson, now Pascall, first appears in 1981 - when she represented England Ladies. With a Durham County career spanning 20 years, a win in the English Girls Championship in 1972 and stints as captain of both England Ladies and England Girls, it’s no surprise Chris’ name appears regularly. Her latest achievement, leading the England Girls to their eighth win a row, her fifth, in 2015’s Home Internationals in Scotland, is yet to be added to the honours board of the club she has been a member of for more than 50 years. “I’m very proud of the girls and what they’ve achieved in the last five years,” says Chris as we take a seat by the window overlooking the putting green and first tee. Chris first captained the girls’ side in 1979, the same year she represented England Ladies in the European Championships. She went on to captain the side a second time in 1981 before stepping back from the role following the births of her children – Harriett and James. She didn’t return to an England captaincy until 2010, by which time she was ready to share her experience with some of Europe’s best young players. “Going back to the captaincy wasn’t a difficult decision,” she says. “I’ve fitted into the role really well and although I miss the competition, I don’t miss the playing.

24 NORTHERN GOLFER

“I’ve been in the position all those girls are in and I think I have a lot to offer them. It’s great working with the younger ones - they just soak up everything,” she adds with a smile. As well as taking on the role of captain, Chris is a selector for England Golf, and Durham’s representative in the North Region and nationally. “I wear a few different hats, but I enjoy each role for a different reason. The captaincy is very hard work but it is also incredibly rewarding.” In a role which covers every level of the game in England, Chris’ experience and passion for golf appears to be what the governing body is looking for. “My work with England Golf since the age of 15 has been very positive – representing or captaining sides. This role is more challenging. “It is a difficult step to take, but I really believe that golf does have to change. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson brought in new assistants and coaches to bring in fresh ideas. That’s what golf needs – fresh ideas. England Golf is putting a huge amount of time, expertise and money into tackling issues from junior involvement to membership numbers, but the county unions and clubs have to get on board and give their clubs a chance of survival. “There are still people out there, in golf clubs, county unions and beyond, who have their heads in the sand. They have to change, make golf more accessible and make golf clubs a more welcoming place.” Chris welcomes the changes to the elite amateur game since her time as part of the England system. “The girls now get a huge amount of support from the county and national systems, and I hope they remember the commitment that has been made in them. It was very different when I was playing. The first year I captained the Girls at the Home

CAPTAINMARVEL Internationals, I was given seven players instead of eight – which was an interesting introduction to captaincy!” Having picked up the game with her father at the age of 11, Chris was a county player by the time she was 16. By the age of 20 she was a scratchhandicapper and would go on to win two Northern Ladies titles and four County Championships. “I don’t think I ever realised I was a really good golfer. I won a big schools championship in Iowa when I was 16 then the Girls a year later, but I was never at the top table.” Chris’ time with England provide her fondest memories on the course. “Getting picked for England for the European Championships in 1979 was a big goal for me and to achieve that was fantastic. I had a really good week, including being five under-par through eight holes in our match against Spain. “Two years later I was picked as second reserve for the Home Internationals, which were played at Portmarnock. I ended up playing all six matches and I can remember every minute of coming back from two down with two to play to half the match against Scotland.”

England with the Home International Trophy and captain Chris With 20 years of County golf behind her, Chris is keen to give something back to the county which supported her throughout her career and has taken on the role of county training officer. “Durham is producing some incredibly talented girls and I’ll be working with the team to get them prepared for County Match Week in Penrith next summer,” she says. “It’s an exciting time for Durham with Briony Bales, Shannon O’Dwyer, Alex Stevenson, Jessica Hall and Kitana

Hollins all coming through. I’m really excited to take on the role and I can’t wait to start working with the girls.” Chris’ track record with young players reads like a Who’s Who of English ladies’ golf in the last five years. She has captained top professionals Charley Hull - a winner on the Ladies European Tour and a member of the European Solheim Cup team in 2013 and 2015 - and LET player Georgia Hall as well as Bronte Law, the fifth ranked amateur in the world.

“I’ve been lucky to work with some of the best young players in England and it’s been fantastic to see them progress. “Charley was exceptional – an incredibly focused young woman. Bronte is like a terrier – she gets her teeth stuck in and doesn’t let go. And Georgia has a great all-round game.” Chris’ passion for junior golf and seeing players progress continues to drive her. “I’ve been there, away from home on your own for the first time, competing internationally for the first time. I know what that’s like and being able to support them and use my experience to help them is something I really enjoy.” With so many hats to wear, and the new season not too far away, Chris is not showing any signs of stepping back. “I still enjoy beyond involved with England Golf as a selector and I’ll hopefully have the chance to travel with the team again next year. Apart from that, I’m always open to ideas and learning about the game and passing on what I’ve learned to young players. The role I have with Durham is something I’d really like to develop and make a difference with the young players.”

MOSS CONTROL As we venture into the month of December we are still yet to experience any of the wintry weather which was originally predicted for the North East. A handful of frosty mornings to date and constant winds with heavy, prolonged stretches of rainfall has had a severe impact on many golf courses saturating the soil profile. This weather aids an ideal scenario for moss to thrive on the golf course and create unwanted issues for both greenkeepers and golfers. Moss is a spore producing weed plant with a ‘spongy’ texture that will tend to develop where turf is struggling to grow vigorously. This can be an issue on greens where it can affect consistency of a ball roll, or more frequently seen on tees where there are more isolated areas of traffic and wear. Any areas where turf growth is sparse of grass coverage or areas where there is excessive shade or moisture has an increased risk of moss establishing. As there are no chemicals that

totally eradicate moss, and limited products that ‘aggravate’ such as sulphate of iron it is necessary to diagnose potential issues before the winter period as the lack of growth will mean any curative work to fix the ‘problem’ areas will need to be carried out in the following spring, emphasising the importance of autumn renovations and the health of the turf plant leading into winter.

orth of England champion Adam Chapman joins Yorkshire’s Jonathan Thomson in an England team to play in Australia in January and early February. Lindrick’s Thomson and Chapman will link with Bradley Moore of Derbyshire and Ashton Turner of Lincolnshire to play in four events - the Australian Master of the Amateurs Championship at Royal Melbourne, the Australian Men’s Amateur at the Metropolitan and Kingswood Golf Clubs, the Lake Macquarie Amateur at Belmont and the New South Wales Amateur at Riverside Oaks and Lynwood Golf Clubs. While Chapman is the North of England champion, Moore won the English U18 boys championship, Thomson tied fourth in the European Amateur and Turner

won the Darwin Salver. Thomson’s Yorkshire teammate Jamie Bower (Meltham) will be in South Africa in late January and February along with Paul Kinnear of Lancashire, Alfie Plant of Kent and Sean Towndrow of Lancashire. They will play in the Gauteng North Strokeplay, South African Strokeplay, African Open, Southern Cape Open Strokeplay, the Cape Province Open and the South African Amateur. Bower, Thomson and Chapman are in the England squad for next year while the England men’s A squad includes Shipley’s Will Whiteoak and Darlington’s Andrew Wilson. Sheffield’s Alex Fitzpatrick follows in the footsteps of his brother Matthew by being named in the England Boys squad.

Willing him to win Otley’s Will Gill is again among the 12 regional finalists shortlisted for the title of the 2015 Fuller’s London Pride Steward of the Year. Gill joins the 2013 national winners Simon and Karen Ward from Wilmslow Golf Club in Cheshire and two past regional champions in Steve Warren of Eaton and Kevin Brown of Sherborne. The competition, now in its ninth year, is run jointly by England Golf and Fuller’s and aims to identify the golf club steward who provides the most welcoming and enjoyable

experience at the 19th hole. Club members, visitors and golf club managers put forward nominations for the 2015 title. These were whittled down to the shortlist of 12 stewards – three from each of four regions - by representatives of England Golf and Fuller’s, with the help of 2014 Steward of the Year, Samantha Hudson of Swaffham Golf Club, Norfolk. Four regional winners will be selected to go to a celebration lunch early next year when the overall winner will be announced.

GOLF2016

Golfing into the New Year

It may seem like the 2016 season is an age away, particularly if you’ve just removed your second jumper and gloves to read this, but it’s a lot closer than you think. With that in mind, here’s our guide to some of the best courses across the region for societies and visiting parties

BLACKWELL GRANGE GOLF CLUB Formerly Stressholme Golf Club, the course at Blackwell Grange measures just less than 6,500 yards and is set in 145-acres of mature parkland. The picturesque setting, with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, is home to rolling fairways, mature trees, water hazards, well-placed bunkers and slick greens. The welcome at Blackwell is warm and the recently refurbished clubhouse, which was opened by Ryder Cup legend Bernard Gallacher offers excellent food and drink - perfect after a day on the course. Blackwell’s practice facilities, also improved as part of investments in the club, are now

WEARSIDE GOLF CLUB In the shadow of Penshaw Monument on the River Wear, Wearside Golf Club is one of the oldest parkland courses in the North. The par 72 course measures just under 6,500 yards and is complemented by an extensive practice area, six-hole par three course, and magnificent clubhouse. Located just off the A19, but far enough away not to be bothered by the busy road, one of the biggest tests at Wearside is its undulating fairways, which can be tricky to get the hang of. Meanwhile, the clubhouse at Wearside offers a very warm welcome and can accommodate a big group with ease, it’s also has a cracking menu, which is very important after a day walking the golf course! Wearside Golf Club, Coxgreen Road, Sunderland, SR4 9JT tel 0191 534 2518, www.wearsidegolfclub.co.uk

among the best in the North East with a 15-bay floodlit, covered driving range and short game practice area. Take a little time to warm up and make the best use of them. You may need it, as things get underway with a tricky, stroke index five, par four that measures 382 yards from the medal tee. Accurate hitting is required if you are to get off to a decent start, and watch out for the out of bounds along the right. Blackwell Grange GC, Snipe Lane, Darlington DL2 2SA, tel 01325 464 458 www.blackwellgrangegolf.com COOKRIDGE HALL GOLF CLUB Cookridge Hall is set within the stunning

landscape of the Yorkshire Dales, just 15 minutes from the centre of Leeds. The par-72 layout measures 6,788 yards from the back tees and can present a stern test for the bigger hitter. Accuracy is key at Cookridge Hall with a number of water hazards and strategically placed bunkers waiting to catch tees shots or approaches which miss their target. The short par four 18th at Cookridge is fittingly named Temptation and presents players with a choice between going for the green and glory while flirting with the water hazard, or playing safe. DURHAM CITY GOLF CLUB The 6,349-yard layout at Durham City is a firm favourite among Co Durham’s best courses, and a regular host of the county’s top events. One of the oldest inland clubs in England, founded in 1887, the gently rolling terrain makes this an ideal course for a large society, while the superb putting surfaces will have you coming back in no time. On the banks of the River Browney, the mature course is a stern test with trees flanking its fairways. Caution is often advised here, with the penalty for wayward tee shots high. Find the fairways and you’re sure to enjoy the test. Durham City Golf Club, Littleburn, Langley Moor, Durham City, DH7 8HL, tel 0191 378 0069, www.durhamcitygolfclub.co.uk FULFORD (YORK) GOLF CLUB Fulford is a memorable championship venue for any golfer wishing to follow in the footsteps of some of golfs greatest players. Fulford staged 23 consecutive European Tour events, and famously saw major champion Bernhard Langer climb an ash tree on the 17th during the Benson and Hedges event, a shot which is cemented in any montage of shots from the German’s career. The 6,900-yard course remains a regular venue for the PGA and has hosted European and International

RICHMOND GOLF CLUB Amateur Events in recent years. The course has gone through a major uplift, with new bunkering and tree clearance re-establishing the heathland nature. Leading golf course architect, Martin Ebert has advised the club, and the results are quite spectacular. This challenging championship course, offers a fair test for all standards of golfer. Fulford Golf Club Heslington Lane, York Yorkshire, YO10 5DY tel 01904 413 579 www.fulfordgolfclub.co.uk GEORGE WASHINGTON HOTEL, GOLF & SPA The perfect venue for those travelling to the North East with its excellent accommodation and spa facilities, George Washington is everything you want in a golf resort. The

championship course is complemented by a 16-bay heated driving range with teaching suites and Flightscope. There’s also a five-hole Academy course, and the 103-bedroom hotel offers great stay and play rates and dining throughout the day. At the heart of the resort is the par 73, 18-hole layout measuring 6,625 yards from the back tees. The fairways here are generous, however trees await should you fail to find the short grass. Play George Washington’s version of Amen corner – a stretch of three tricky par fours – in level par and you’re on for a great score. NORTHERN GOLFER 35

GOLF2016 HOUGHTON-LE-SPRING GOLF CLUB A stunning parkland track, the ups and downs of Houghton remain a real favourite. An enjoyable, if testing track, the 6,381-yard par 72 Copt Hill course is a joy to play on a calm day and demanding if the wind blows. The signature 11th at Houghton is one of the region’s great risk-and-reward par fours. At a little under 300 yards it’s a birdie chance if played correctly, but watch out for the ditch on the left. An eagle here is a great story to tell back in the clubhouse. Houghton Le Spring GC Copt Hill, Co. Durham, DH5 8LU, tel 0191 584 1198, www.houghtongolfclub.co.uk THE KP The 6,193-yard layout at The KP in Pocklington demands strategy, patience and a touch of creativity. The course overlooks the Vale of York and is a pleasure to play with its rolling fairways and large, challenging greens. The short par-three 15th got our vote for signature hole when we visited. At 168-yards it sounds a doddle. However, there’s water, a bunker and severe mounding to contend with. The KP also boasts luxury hotel rooms and a Glasshouse restaurant, as well as an impressive clubhouse which offers views across the golf course and provides the perfect place to relax. The KP, Kilnwick Percy, Pocklington, YO42 1UF, tel 01759 303 090, www.thekp.co.uk

RICHMOND (YORKS) GOLF CLUB One of the shortest courses on our list, Richmond (Yorks) makes up for its lack of length with a mix of five stunning par threes, which may well be the best mix of short holes in the region. The key to good scoring at Richmond is a sensible approach from the tee and a hot putter. The undulating greens offer a great deal of defence – take an extra few minutes on the putting green…you’ll thank us later! The finishing hole at Richmond offers a great story for the end of every visit. A par three played through a narrow gap in the thick trees to a green sitting on the edge of the clubhouse veranda; birdies are met with warm applause, while not making it out of the trees may result in a few laughs from your companions. Richmond (Yorks) Golf Club, Bend Hagg Richmond, North Yorkshire, DL10 5EX tel 01748 823 231 www.richmondyorksgolfclub.co.uk SLALEY HALL The Hunting and the Priestman courses at Slaley Hall are rightly ranked among the very best in the North East with a string of European, Senior Tour, and PGA events staged here in recent years. Set in more than 1,000 acres of Northumberland moorland and forest, the championship golf courses are stern tests.

GOLF2016 The Hunting requires great ability to play anywhere near to your handicap; the front nine is among the toughest stretches in the country, requiring long and straight tee shots, accurate approaches and an excellent putting stroke. The ninth, often switched to the 18th for major events, is widely regarded as one of the toughest par fours in the region. Designed by Dave Thomas, the lush sweeping fairways, rolling moorland, streams and lakes, towering trees and banks of rhododendrons combine to provide an air of peace and tranquillity and a golfing experience you’ll never forget. Slaley Hall, Slaley, Hexham, Northumberland NE47 0BX, tel 01434 673 350 www.qhotels.co.uk/slaley-hall SOUTH MOOR Designed by legendary course architect Dr Alister MacKenzie, best known for creating Augusta National – home of The Masters, South Moor is a must-visit for every golfer should they have the chance. The 6,293-yard heathland course is a classic MacKenzie layout with the free-flowing greens which became his trademark. The stunning hillside terrain on which the course is laid out presents a tough test, with elevation changes and the sloping, rig and furrow fairways adding to the difficulty of the course.

Membership to Suit Your Lifestyle South Moor Golf Club has long been regarded as one of Durham’s finest courses. It is one of only two MacKenzie designed courses in the region and Durham’s only true heath land course. This unique combination makes South Moor Golf Club memorable golfing experience.

South Moor Golf Club aims to provide membership options which offer members the full entitlements of golf club membership but which also offer enough variation to meet the varying demands of modern lifestyles and that provide value for money.

HOLE MORE PUTTS

lisle in Car 45 665

28 5 tel 012 ance erform p r u o .t www .uk golf.co

A good putting action is often underestimated in the amateur game but, when you consider the amount of putts you have in a round, your putting should be the part of your game that you practise the most. The first thing to get right is the grip - the only link between you and the clubhead. Rather than using your normal grip for your putting, try moving the putter more into your palms, which will limit the wrist action in your putting stroke. This can improve consistency. With practice this should get you on your way to a more consistent putting stroke and reducing your scores.

THE GRIP Start by placing both index fingers on either side of your putter grip, running parallel down the grip. Overlap the rest of your fingers behind the grip in a way that feels comfortable. From this position you have two options, you can slide your right hand down the grip for a more traditional right below left grip or swap them round for the left below right putting grip. The most important thing is that your putter grip is in your palms and your palms face each other. From here, lock your wrists in this position and control your putting stroke with a rocking motion with you shoulders.

Welcome to your reader feedback page. We want to hear your likes, dislikes and funny golfing stories, and if you’d like to make suggestions about Northern Golfer, let us know. We want to hear from you!

It’s the time of year to reflect on 12 months of success across the region. Here’s our highlights of 2015 Close House hosted the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship, with Aussie Peter Fowler picking up the trophy Andrew Minnikin, Northumberland’s County captain, completed a clean sweep of county strokeplay events in 2015 Hartlepool’s Alex Wrigley helped GB&I win the PGA Cup on US soil for the first time Tyneside’s James Wilson won the first Northern Golfer Junior Champion of Champions at Ramside Hall Saltburn’s Anne Gollogly and Katie Clark produced a great performance to win Northern Golfer’s first Ladies Greensomes competition. We’ll be launching the 2016 event in the next edition of Northern Golfer

George Washington pro Ryan Ingram wrote to tell us about the success of his home club, and his players at this year’s Durham County Development Group Awards. Ryan said: “I’m very happy with what we have achieved this year and that the hard work we’ve done has paid off. Two of the young players who are part of my development programme – Alex Bowie (left) and Archie Wood – were part of the Durham County Srixon Tour Final team which won the event at Carus Green earlier this year. George Washington Golf Club also won the Get Into Golf Centre of the Year. Congratulations Ryan, keep up the good work.
