WELCOME&CONTENTS We’ve had some red hot summer days and some complete washouts in the last few weeks, but it doesn’t seem to have unsettled our region’s golfers. The Open Championship at Royal Portrush was a unanimous highlight of our month at Northern Golfer HQ, particularly when our friend Andrew Wilson made the cut and climbed through the field to finish in a tie for 32nd place on Sunday. To see how far Andrew has come, from winning events like the Northern Masters and scratch competitions in Durham to competing alongside the best players in the world was a lot of fun for the team here. It was also a lot of fun for Andrew, who discusses his first nine months as a professional in this month’s cover interview. We’ve also caught up with greenkeeper Simon Olver following his trip to Portrush, and he’s got some great stories to share from his week in Northern Ireland. We’ve also been celebrating Women in Golf Week recently and the girls continue to make the headlines this month - from county championships through to more national success. It’s been inspiring to read the stories from women and girls across the country who play golf as well as those that work and volunteer in the game so we can all enjoy it. The weather inspired me to write this month’s column all about having the will to play in any conditions - as did a damp afternoon at Garesfield Golf Club for this month’s Course Profile. I’ll be out there rain or shine for the rest of the season and you should be too - the alternatives are not worth thinking about! The Match Play Pairs tournament is reaching its later stages and we’re down to just 16 teams in this year’s events. There have been some fantastic games so far - good luck to all those still vying for a place in the final at Wynyard Golf Club in October. We’ve also opened online bookings for the Champion of Champions events this month and there’s only a month to go until we’re back to Ramside Hall for the events, which are supported by Brewin Dolphin for the first time this year. The events are a great finish to the season, celebrating club champions from all our clubs and every club has invites to attend - please make sure your club takes up its places, we’d love to see as many champions as possible taking part this year. yke House Academy’s Jack Burton, Louis Westmoreland and Will Skipp teamed up to win the English Schools’ Team Championship at Woodhall Spa. The Durham-based teenagers were led by Jack, 14, with a score of 40 points as 14-year-old Louis scored 39 points to give the Durham school a seven under-par total and a three shot victory. Will, 17, returned 35 points, which was discounted with the two best scores out of the three to be counted. Dyke House Academy’s nearest challengers were Graham School from Scarborough, who finished two points clear of the third placed team from Matthew Arnold School in Oxford. Durham Boys captain Will said: “I have played for the team since

year seven and I am now in year 12 so it’s nice to have gone all the way and won. “We have reached the final before but couldn’t play in it, so it is nice to have been able to do that after six years. I knew I was playing well coming into the event and I knew Jack and Louis were doing well too so getting the win is a great feeling.” Dyke House principal Adam Palmer said: “It’s a fantastic achievement that we are incredibly proud of. It’s proof that with hard work, dedication and a desire to improve that truly amazing things can happen. We talk to the students all the time about the importance of hard work and all three of the boys epitomise this with their golf. I’m sure they’ll look back on this achievement and be very proud.”

Nigel King held off the challenge of the host club’s Ian Hendry to win the Durham County Seniors Championship at Seaton Carew. King shot rounds of 72 and 74 to earn a trip to the English Seniors Champions tournament.

Michael, 18, represented Middlesbrough College at the event and was the leading male golfer. He was also part of the North East team alongside classmates Daniel Norman, 16 and Sonnie Alder, 17 - which finished in second place. Michael, who is heading to the US for a four-year scholarship at Nova Southeastern University, said: “I’m really excited about going over to the US. I’d love to make it as a golf professional but my plan at the moment is to play as much as I can and see what the standard of other student golfers is like. “I train two days a week at least and spend a further seven hours on the course too. Michael added: “I’m really lucky that James – who has been my coach since I was young – is at college. He’s helped me enormously and it’s partly thanks to him that I’m off to Miami next summer.

James added: “Michael is a talented golfer who works hard in college and on the course, and he deserves this. I’m thrilled he won the AoC National Championships as the standard of competition was strong. This is only the start for Michael and he’s off to the US with the backing of everyone at Middlesbrough College.”

Durham county player Michael Henson made home advantage count in the North Yorkshire and South Durham Championship at Bishop Auckland Golf Club. The 37-year-old posted rounds of 74 and 71 to finish two shots clear of Middlesbrough Golf Club’s Michael Hay. The win followed Michael’s top 10 finish in the English Mid Amateur Championship at The Leicestershire. City of Newcastle’s Andrew Minnikin also finished inside the top 10 at the event.

National stage for Tyneside Tyneside Golf Club was given a huge vote of thanks after hosting the northern qualifying tournaments in the England Golf Captains and Senior Series championships. Qualifying events take place throughout England and the leading players at each event qualify for the grand final at England Golf Week at Woodhall Spa. In the Senior Series, which is open to men and women aged over 50, the Tyneside qualifier was won by Peterborough Milton’s Graham Marshall with 40 points while Bellingham’s John Walton and Tyneside’s Willie Aitchison may still qualify through the order of merit. In the captain’s qualifier, Brampton’s Lionel Dobson won through with 41 points.

Darren and Neil arrived at 3.45am and completed the challenge at 8.30pm having walked 35.9 miles and lost just two balls. 08 NORTHERN GOLFER

Dream come true

G

reenkeeper Simon Olver got the chance to fulfil one of the biggest dreams of his career at Royal Portrush, preparing the final green on the Sunday of an Open Championship before watching Shane Lowry lift the Claret Jug. Simon, course manager at Whitley Bay Golf Club, worked alongside Royal Portrush course manager Graeme Beatt and his team throughout the event, handmowing the greens on the sixth and 18th holes along with the practice green alongside greenkeeper Andy Barr. Simon, who was part of a 70-strong team of greenkeepers preparing the course for the week with shifts starting at 4am each day, said: “The atmosphere all week was incredible, right from arriving early in the morning through to being in the crowds on the afternoons. “There were great moments throughout the whole week – the main one was fulfilling the dream of cutting the centre line on the 18th green for the Sunday of an Open Championship. It was also amazing to experience the Irish crowds and the tournament itself between all the hard work. “There were loads of little moments too, like going out with the guys on Saturday evening to fill divots when The R&A had decided to not cut the greens because of the forecast for Sunday. It was great camaraderie with all the guys and something I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

Andy Barr, US Open champion Gary Woodland and Simon Olver

While the days were long and tiring at Portrush, Simon walked 138 miles in 10 days, he says the team spirit among the greenkeepers never faltered. “The team was totally relaxed and I think we all

enjoyed it. Of course there’s pressure on everyone to do a good job, but everyone knew exactly what they were doing and we all got the chance to enjoy the week, which made it even more special,” he added.

Lancashire topped the leaderboard at the Northern Boys Championship – AKA the Little Six - at Rockliffe Hall as Northumberland’s Joseph Robson was the leading individual. Northumberland finished in fourth place as Joseph led the scoring over 36 holes with a total of 139 and earned the John Todd Trophy.

arrogate Golf Club has become the latest English club, and the first club in Yorkshire, to sign up to The R&A’s Women in Golf Charter. The club already has 85 female members and it has committed to increasing that membership level by at least 5% over the next three years. “Harrogate Golf Club has been at the forefront in golf since its inception in 1892,” said club president Alastair Davidson. “More recently, it was the first club in Yorkshire to gain Golf Mark accreditation. Over the last couple of years we have introduced nine-hole stableford competitions which are open to all genders and we have reviewed our competition structure so that seven-day lady members can play in competitions on Saturdays. “We have a thriving mixed section and as part of our drive to be more inclusive we have also introduced a shorter 18-hole course called the Belmont which will soon be available for qualifying competitions.” Harrogate has named its immediate past captains, Maggie Gobbie and William Watson, as its Women in Golf champions and both have already been working to

formulate the club’s commitment to the charter moving forward. Maggie, who has been a member at Harrogate for 12 years, is working with the club’s professionals to promote a series of trial packages for beginner ladies and, with the support of the ladies section, is arranging social and practise sessions for the participants. William, a club member for 34 years, is helping the junior coordinator with efforts to build the juniors. “It’s been fantastic to work with Harrogate on the Women in Golf Charter and to see how they have addressed a variety of aspects within the club from their initial recruitment campaigns through to the female representation on boards. We are looking forward to working with them over the coming year to ensure their commitments are a success,” said England Golf ’s women and girls manager Lauren Spray. The Women in Golf Charter was launched last year to encourage more women and girls to play the game and to increase the number of job opportunities for women within the sport. MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR MONEY

The Brewin Dolphin team offer an introduction to the key things to think about if you want to make the most of your money

Being clear on your financial goals is essential to making the most of your money. Making decisions with a clear endpoint in mind can make it easier to achieve financial security and allow you to enjoy your life to the full, so we’ve put together this brief rundown to help you get closer to your goals. 1. SPECIFY WHAT A ‘RAINY DAY’ LOOKS LIKE At the first glance, stating goals like putting money aside ‘for a rainy day’ or similar may sound sufficient, but this lack of precision is unlikely to serve as a good motivator to save. For example, what does saving for this ‘rainy day’ actually mean? Many financial advisers might say this means having savings to cover six months’ worth of outgoings in an instant access cash account – but what does this mean for you? Every household will have different responsibilities with different vulnerabilities. Identifying yours with precision will help you calculate what

you need, and when you can move on to other financial considerations and investments. 2. FOCUS ON YOUR TIME HORIZON Saving over a period of time involves foregoing the more immediate fulfilment of spending our money. Certainty over the destination of our financial journey can help overcome human nature and its tendency to demand immediate rewards. However, not every financial journey is a smooth skate to retirement: if you have children, what education do you wish them to receive? How do you want to make sure your family are provided for, should the worst happen? These are obviously significant moments in life, but it’s also worth considering if you want a new car, or a dream holiday, or to put some money aside for a home improvement. These are often on shorter timeframes, and so will require different financial strategies.

3. BE PATIENT In setting clear goals, we create incentives for ourselves. Rather than abstractions, our minds can focus on clear aims. From short-term targets like saving for a house deposit or a new car, or longer-term intentions such as comfort in retirement, motivating ourselves is always easier when we have a clear purpose. 4. KNOW WHAT YOU CAN AND CAN’T CONTROL Interest rates are likely to stay low for the foreseeable future, which means inflation can reduce your money’s purchasing power over time. Even at relatively generous rates, savings accounts can pay less interest than will keep pace with the rate of inflation. Savings accounts

that do not keep up with rising prices will lose value in real terms over time. This is a real vulnerability that proper planning can mitigate. Being aware of the options is a good start, especially given that research by Brewin Dolphin indicated that 41% of Britons were not concerned about inflation as there was “nothing they could do” to reduce its effect on their finances. 5. DON’T DELAY YOUR DECISIONS Postponing decisions does not mean that they do not have to be made, and opportunities on offer earlier in your saving journey may not exist down the line. Setting clear goals also builds confidence in saving. Decisions are made better and faster, guesswork is reduced, and changes in circumstances can be reacted to sensibly – all of which are preferable to just improvising. 6. SAVE LITTLE AND OFTEN Having set clear goals, getting started by saving little and often, and seeing your own progress towards your goals, can reinforce your motivation. It’s easier to make small sacrifices than big ones, so working out how much it is feasible to put aside and at what pace will help you along the way. Gradually watching those small amounts build up into more significant savings will further encourage you to save more. Thinking about the practical side of this is important as well. For example, the direct debit facility under Brewin Portfolio Services allows you to put money aside regularly – making it easy and convenient to add to your savings pot.

The event saw 28 teams take part with Tynemouth’s ladies captain Anne Coates leading her team to victory with 106 points. rook Golf Club’s centenary year is in full swing. The Durham club started the year with a centenary ball and there’s been no shortage of competitive golf with a Centenary Matchplay Shield, a Centenary Trophy won by Jason Tidymen with an exceptional 44 points, plus Michael Hughes and Leo Noble winning the club’s own Seniors Open event with 49 points. Meanwhile, captain Peter Shaw led a team in The Longest Day Challenge, raising money for MacMillan Cancer Support, and there’s been success at county level too - George Longthorne winning the Durham Third Division title and Peter Tallentire scoring a hole-inone at Tyneside’s ninth hole in the England Golf captains event.

The club has also hosted the Durham County Teams Championship Qualifier, and managed to win through to the main event in the process. Another big day is coming up in September, when the club hosts a NENW PGA pro am on September 21. “The club actually started in June 1919,” said Peter, who followed in his father Les’ footsteps as a club captain. “There have been lots of ups and downs in the last 100 years, but we’re probably in a better position now than we’ve been in for a long time. “We’ve got plans for the future. We want to build a swing room and practice facilities, and go out into local schools – hopefully we’ll have another successful 100 years.”

Historic double for Schmidt Yorkshire’s Ben Schmidt (pictured) became just the fourth golfer in history to win both the Brabazon Trophy and the Carris Trophy in the same calendar year when he won the English Boys’ Under 18 Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Moor Park Golf Club. Meanwhile, Durham County Boys captain Will Skipp had to settle for third place after holding a narrow lead going into the final round. Skipp’s third round 69, which included an eagle at the par five 16th, followed rounds of 70 and 71.

The cost for this coaching is £99. This year’s assessment days will be held at Close House on Saturday September 7 and Linden Hall on Saturday September 22. LOOK WHAT’S HAPPENING AT BRANCEPETH CASTLE GOLF CLUB The course at Brancepeth Castle Golf Club was designed by the world famous architect Harry Colt in 1924 and laid out on what was Brancepeth Castle Deer Park - the stables and coach house being converted into the clubhouse. Colt was involved in designing or redesigning more than 300 courses around the world, including Moor Park, Royal Lytham & St. Annes and Wentworth. At Brancepeth he created a beautiful parkland course which today measures 6,400 yards and offers a great variation of holes with the deep ravine cutting through the course and providing many challenges throughout the round. Over the last 40-plus years, Brancepeth has enjoyed a

traditional, although right to left sloping, practice ground. However, In June 2019 the club partnered up with Freddy Valenti at www.golfdrivingbays.com to create a practice range with one covered teaching bay, two covered general bays and five SouthWestGreens artificial hitting turf open bays. As part of the new

development, a new larger putting green has also been created. These new facilities give members, guests and visitors an excellent new experience at the club, and European Tour player Graeme Storm was on-hand to officially open the range on Sunday August 4 while taking up honorary membership of the club.

aitlin Whitehead and Jess Baker pushed champion Marie Bechtold right to the end at the English Girls’ Open Amateur Championship at Gog Magog Golf Club. Caitlin, 16, from Carus Green Golf Club, finished one shot behind Marie on four under-par with rounds of 71, 75, 71 and 67. Meanwhile Jess, from Gosforth Park Ladies Golf Club, leapt through the field to finish in third place, posting two rounds of 66 after just making the cut with rounds of 81 and 72. Marie was seven shots in front of Caitlin and nine ahead of Jess after opening with rounds of 71, 71 and 68 but in the end needed a birdie on the penultimate hole to regain the lead before going on to par the last to card a 73 and finish one shot ahead of Caitlin on five under-par. Jess, 16, shared third place with Germany’s Chiara Horder and France’s Pyrene Delample on three under-par. Marie, 18, becomes the second

successive German to lift the trophy after Celina Sattelkau became the first overseas winner of the championship 12 months ago at East Devon. Following the runner-up finish, which comes on the back of a busy exam period, Caitlin, who hit a pitching wedge to three inches on the final hole of the tournament for a closing birdie, said: “That was a great way to finish. I’ve been sitting my GCSEs so I was pleased to play so well. I played well all week and my approach play was very good. “To be honest, I had no idea how close it was at the end,” she added. “I saw the leaderboard on the 14th and at that time Celina was seven under and I was three under, so I thought I was fighting for second place. It has been a very good tournament for me and one that gets me in shape for the Girls’ Home Internationals.” Caitlin and Jess will team up with Whitley Bay Golf Club’s Rosie Belsham for the Girls Home Internationals at Downfield Golf Club, Scotland later this month.

Taking a break

T

Chris Paisley checks in from Florida and updates us on his recent European Tour starts

his month I’m writing to you from the Florida sunshine during a a delightful five week break. Like a true Brit, I keep muttering ‘It’s too hot”. Since my last column I have played the Open De Andalucia, Irish Open and Scottish Open; an incredible run of events! I finished 37th, 41st and 34th respectively. While the results aren’t anything special, I played a lot of high quality golf. This year I made the cut at Valderrama for the first time - a place that normally has me well beaten after 36 holes! I have also had an awful record in Rolex Series events the past few years, so it was nice to make the cuts in Ireland and Scotland. With so many Race to Dubai points up for grabs, it was important to

Lahinch Golf Club - host of this year’s Irish Open

play well to ensure my card was secured for next season. Retaining my card isn’t something I set as a goal at the beginning of a season, but it’s still nice to know that I have a job for another year. My main goal for the season is to finish in the top 20 of the Race to Dubai, which would get me into all the majors and WGCs next year. So, what do I do in this break to achieve that goal? A big focus is to get my strength, speed and power back. After a long stretch on the road I typically lose 5-6kg due to a lack of training. I really enjoy going to the gym so it’s not a chore for me. Golf-wise, I will base a lot of my work on my stats from the year so far. One stat that has stood out is my increase in three putts. I typically have one per tournament, but recently I’ve been averaging almost one per round.

It doesn’t sound much, but every shot is so important and three putt avoidance is one of the most important stats when it comes to winning. I am always looking to improve every aspect of my game, but when an important stat like that jumps out, it’s important to address it. These periods are also crucial for family time. Although I am back working extremely hard, I try to get the balance right. Keri and Ella have been travelling with me, but Keri takes on the majority of the workload when we’re at tournaments so I can focus on golf. It has just been an absolute joy to spend so much time with them and watch Ella grow and learn so quickly. I have come to really enjoy these periods; it’s a nice reminder that while golf is my job, they will always be my life.

Living the dream Dean Bailey catches up with Andrew Wilson following his fast start in the professional ranks, including a first win on the EuroPro Tour at Linden Hall and a top 32 finish at The Open Championship

T

he step up from the amateur ranks to the professional game is a huge change for any golfer. Going from competing against talented youngsters to sharing a driving range with the best players in the world, while knowing your financial future is on the line, can prove too much pressure for even the most promising player. This is what makes Andrew Wilson’s achievements since turning professional in November 2018, and his approach to playing golf for a living, so impressive. Since joining the paid ranks and signing up as an attached professional at Rockliffe Hall, Darlington-based Andrew, 25, has flourished. An early win on the 1836 Tour at Dunham Forest in April and a second place finish on the EuroPro Tour in May showed good signs before he hit a rich vein of results in June and July. In a 31-day stretch, Andrew won his first NENW PGA pro am title at Teesside Golf Club, came through a playoff at Regional Qualifying for the Open at Alwoodley, finished in the top 25 in the EuroPro Tour event at Dudsbury, won Final Qualifying for The Open at Notts (Hollinwell), won The EuroPro Tour’s Motocaddy Masters at Linden Hall, and

played all four rounds at The Open at Royal Portrush – finishing in a tie for 32nd place in the season’s final major. “I’m very happy with where I am,” he says. “To have a few wins and play The Open is a great start to my career and there are a lot of positives to take from the last nine months. “The step from being an amateur, even playing for England, to playing as a professional feels like playing a different sport. “I feel like I can deal with the pressure really well on the golf course. I’ve grown up a lot having been to university and I can honestly say I never feel particularly intimidated out on the course these days. I’ve felt a lot more pressure doing exams at university or dealing with things in my life outside golf than I ever have playing.” The win at Linden Hall came in the middle of Andrew’s packed schedule. He played a practice round at Linden on Sunday, practised ahead of Final Qualifying on Monday at Notts (Hollinwell), played 36 holes on Tuesday to qualify for

ONTOUR The Open then travelled back to Linden, arriving at 1.30am on Wednesday, before shooting 10 under-par over three rounds Wednesday to Friday to win the event. “I wasn’t confident coming into the season. I wasn’t sure I’d made the right decision after spending five months waiting around and trying to practise in the cold. Since then, I’ve made the most of the opportunities I’ve had. I haven’t had the opportunity to have the Challenge Tour starts I was looking for, but I’m making the most of my time on the EuroPro Tour this season. “It’s a good feeling to win, I only won two national events as an amateur in six years, so winning on the EuroPro Tour is a real highlight. I wasn’t expecting to win at Linden, having played so much golf, but getting the job done is always going to be a highlight when you look back.” Progressing to The Open is a highlight in the careers of many golfers and while Andrew learned a lot from the experience, he says he’s not planning on it being his only visit to golf ’s oldest major. “I’m very proud to have made the cut and finished in tie for 32nd place at my first Open. Of course that’s a great result, but I would have liked to have finished higher. I always expect a lot of myself, and there’s also a lot to be said for getting across the line and winning in golf, no matter what level you’re at. It’s a hard thing to get your head around, but I felt more satisfaction winning on the EuroPro Tour two weeks earlier because it’s so hard to win golf tournaments. “I didn’t feel out of place in that environment. I wasn’t there as a fan, I knew I was there to work hard and perform on the golf course. “There were some special moments out there though, like playing with Louis Oosthuizen in the final round and having the chance to chat with him a little bit – though the crowd was cheering a lot more for him, which my sister Joanna tried to make up for on her own. I was also two under-par through 10 holes in the first round and right up there, and shot a really good 67 on Friday to make the cut. “I didn’t play well in the last two rounds and I think that had a bit to do with setting my goal for the week at making the cut. I felt fatigued on Saturday and Sunday, and struggled a bit, but I definitely want to play in a lot more majors in the future. It was an incredible experience.” A week off has given Andrew time to reflect on the success of the last couple of months, though he isn’t planning to stand still for long and has his sights set on gaining a Challenge Tour card for 2020. “I tend to be very critical of myself and 26 NORTHERN GOLFER

Rockliffe Hall-based professional Andrew Wilson

I’m always setting my targets high, but I’ve had some successes very early in my career and they’re all important steps. From here I want to earn a Challenge Tour card for 2020, the first chance to do that is through a top five finish on the EuroPro Tour, which I’m not too far from securing. Then I’ll be heading to European Tour Q School at the end of the season to see what kind of card I can get through that.” Though the change to the professional ranks has been a big one, Andrew says he feels comfortable playing at the top level of the game, and is looking to build on his experience quickly, having waited to turn professional while completing a degree in Geography and a masters in Business for Finance. He has recently decided to take a break from studying

for his AAT Accountancy qualifications to concentrate on golf. “Golf is going well and I’m happy with how I’m progressing. The aim is to build my career in the sport, but I’m very aware of how hard that can be. I’m lucky to be secure financially right now, but I’m also aware that can come and go. I’m prepared to walk away if golf doesn’t work out for me. Having options is really important and we’ll just see how things develop and how far I can go. My expectations are high.” The season heads into its final stretch in the next few weeks, before Andrew will have a long chance to reflect on his first year as a professional and look ahead to 2020 – if this year is anything to go on, there could be even more big opportunities coming his way.

COLUMNIST

Dean Bailey

Swinging in the rain It’s been a very wet few weeks, but there’s still a lot of golf to be played and no amount of wet weather should be allowed to stop us

T

he consistency of the view from our office window of late gave me inspiration for this month’s column - wet weather. While I never lament a wet day in the office – surely it can’t rain through to the weekend again? – another July day filled with heavy rain is testing the patience of some here at Northern Golfer HQ. Our indoor putting mat has been well used this month, as many of my colleagues have simply refused to step foot on the golf course for far too long because of the rain. But, there’s something special about playing golf in the rain. We live in the North East of England, it rains quite a bit here, so you’re really missing out if you refuse to head out in anything but perfect conditions. Plus, what was the point of buying that £200-plus waterproof jacket if you’re only planning to wear it when you go to Asda? The main lesson I’ve learned from playing in the rain is to stay positive. While almost everyone else on the course will be lamenting the decision to play this morning, you’re a couple of shots ahead if you can accept

the conditions and concentrate on playing the course in front of you. The traditional advice is really important too. Keep plenty of gloves in your bag, and keep them somewhere where rain can’t get to them. A spare towel is a good idea too, as is an umbrella which fits into the holder on your trolley (it’s a real pain if it doesn’t!). From there, try and stay as happy as you can – everyone will find it tough out there, conditions will be far from ideal, but you’re still out playing when you could be somewhere far worse. On three consecutive Saturdays in July, my house resembled Wishy Washy’s laundrette – gloves, towels and waterproofs spread across radiators and doors to dry as my golf bag was consigned to the kitchen corner in an attempt to dry it out within a week. A small sacrifice for another day on the golf course, in my book anyway! Despite the forecast I’ll be heading out next Saturday, rain or shine. It’s much better than showing off that expensive waterproof jacket in Asda on a Saturday morning!

COURSEPROFILE

Glorious Garesfield Dean Bailey pays a visit to Garesfield Golf Club

C

ounty Durham is home to some tough golf courses, but few present a more difficult challenge than Garesfield Golf Club. Sitting between the Tyne Valley and the North Pennines around six miles west of Gateshead, the course is laid out across sweeping undulations, heading down into the valley before returning up the hill. Meanwhile, the fairways are bordered by ancient trees, many of them creating narrow landing areas and even narrower approaches. The mature parkland course has been tweaked and improved regularly since it was laid out by Harry Fernie in 1922, including the addition of the two-storey clubhouse overlooking the course and the valley below. At 6,458 yards, the par 72 course can play quite long when you consider the number of tee shots which force all but the straightest drivers to play conservatively from the tee. Played in a loop at the front of the clubhouse, the opening four holes at Garesfield offer a sample of the tree-lined fairways which lie ahead while giving away little of the twisting descent into the valley that lies ahead. The first and second – a pair of short par fours measuring 292 yards and 30 NORTHERN GOLFER

354 yards respectively – are gentle openers. At the first, a long iron short of two fairway bunkers and between the trees will leave a simple approach, while your tee shot at the second must avoid the trees which loom over the tee box and create a narrow corridor to the fairway. The toughest hole of the stretch, the third, is a short par five at just 474 yards but you must find the fairway from the tee with tall trees flanking the fairway and out of bounds close by on the right side. Find the fairway and you are rewarded with a chance to reach the green in two – just avoid the four bunkers en-route to one of the smallest greens on the course. A simple par three of 159 yards follows – club selection is the key here as finding any of the three bunkers at the front of the green will leave a tough up and down, particularly when the flag is at the back of this long green. Head back around the clubhouse to the raised tee at the short par five fifth (467 yards) and you’ll find a good chance for birdie. The fairway here is generous and sweeps to the left around the trees to a raised green guarded by a single bunker on the front left corner A tough par four, the sixth hole measures

394 yards and requires two long, accurate shots. The tee shot must find the flat portion of the fairway while avoiding Chopwell Woods on the right side to leave an uphill approach to a small green with two bunkers at the front edge. The seventh is a stunning downhill par five, played down into the valley with Chopwell Woods to the right side. The two-tiered green is often in reach here thanks to the slope – a good birdie chance. A birdie will come in handy as you head to the signature hole (see fact file). Heading to the turn, the ninth is a short, dogleg right par four of 357 yards – stay to the left side of the fairway to leave an unobstructed view up to one of the trickiest greens here. Anything on the right side will have to negotiate two huge oaks to reach the green. The view down to the green from the 10th tee is fantastic but be careful with club selection here. The green lies on the other side of a small valley and slopes back towards it, while out of bounds lies close to the rear of the green. Another tough par four of more than 435 yards, the 11th requires a driver from the tee with trees and thick rough waiting on both sides of the fairway, which turns from right to left. A long approach, often played semi-blind, must find the

COURSEPROFILE

FACT FILE correct section of a two-tiered green protected by a deep bunker in the front left corner. The short par four 12th offers a little respite, though you must avoid the stream at the front of the green before the final 400-yard-plus par four. At 441 yards, the 13th will again test your accuracy with the driver. Favour the right side here as the fairway slopes to the left. The second is played blind down a steep slope to a bunkerless green – a daunting shot for those who haven’t played here before which requires equal parts skill and faith. You’ll have a much better view of the green at the par three 14th. Just 176 yards, the tee shot must be carried onto the green. Putts from below the hole are far easier on this undulating green. While it measures just 286 yards, the 15th often plays much longer than its yardage. A beautifully framed hole, once again accuracy from the tee will be rewarded with a simple approach uphill to one of the smallest greens on the course. Club selection is key at the par five 16th. A long drive will leave you with two options – pitch down the fairway to leave around 150 yards for your third shot or take aim at the green and get within 50 yards of the putting surface. The steep ravine between these two points is a golfing no man’s land, from which the approach is steeply uphill and completely blind. The two-tiered green here can test even the best putters. Heading for home, the tree-lined 327-yard 17th rewards straight hitters with a good view of a wide green with bunkers on the front corners. The longest par three on the course, the 205-yard final hole is played in the shadow of the clubhouse with two bunkers guarding the front of a two-tiered green.

CONTACT Garesfield Golf Club, Chopwell Tyne and Wear, NE17 7AP Tel 01207 561 309 www.garesfieldgolfclub.co.uk

Harry Fernie knew exactly how to test golfers when he laid out Garesfield and the challenge remains tough despite the advancements in technology. Trees loom close by on many tee shots while the long par fours are well balanced against shorter par fives and a couple of good birdie chances. A fun round awaits at Garesfield should you manage to stay on the fairways.

GREEN FEES From £12 – see the website for details. TOTAL DISTANCE White tees – 6,458 yards Yellow tees – 6,043 yards Red tees – 5,411 yards FEATURES Large clubhouse overlooking the course Practice area and putting green Buggy hire Pro shop run by Darren Crowle CADDY’S TIP Ancient trees stand watch over the fairways here and wild driving will be punished severely throughout the round. Finding the fairways is essential and sacrificing distance for an unobstructed approach is highly recommended. SIGNATURE HOLE The 448-yard par four eighth hole requires a long drive through a corridor of trees, though the fairway is more generous than many here. Find the short grass and you’re faced with a long iron approach to a green guarded by a burn which runs around the front of the putting surface. One of the most difficult shots of the round, a four here is a great score.

OUR VERDICT A traditional parkland layout with a great routing through ancient trees on the side of a valley – what more could you want? NORTHERN GOLFER 31

Gearing up The season is heading into its final weeks and the new releases continue this month with new wedges and bags from PING, new irons and hybrids from Callaway, irons from Mizuno and Titleist, putters, shoes and more…

EPIC PERFORMANCE

Callaway Epic Forged irons and Epic Flash hybrids RRP: Irons - £1,999 (4-PW), Hybrids - £269 uk.callawaygolf.com Callaway has unveiled its latest iron design, the Epic Forged, along with a new hybrid. The multi-material irons are forged from 1025 carbon steel, finished in platinum chrome and feature a Suspended Tungsten Core for the first time in a Callaway forging. The materials combine to offer satisfying feel along with performance delivered through the custom weighting of each head and variable face thickness patterns, which promote consistent spin rates and ball speeds. Meanwhile, the new Epic Flash hybrids feature Callaway’s Jailbreak Technology - two internal bars that link the crown and sole to stiffen the face and transfer more energy at impact -promoting maximum distance. Technology in the new hybrids also includes two tungsten weights designed into each pear-shaped head to optimise launch and flight along with Triaxial Carbon fabric called T2C in the crown – the same material used in Epic Flash drivers.

PITCH PERFECT

PING Glide 3.0 wedges RRP: from £130 www.ping.com

PING’s latest Glide wedges have been developed with a gripto-grind approach, re-designing every component to create a higher-spinning, more forgiving, lighter overall design with multiple sole grind options. The construction combines a 431 stainless steel head with a larger and softer elastomer Custom Tuning Port (CTP) insert. Similar to the popular i210 irons, the additional volume of the CTP allows for a larger insert covering more of the back of the face, resulting in activation of the elastomer at impact to produce a soft yet solid feel. The new cavity design and larger CTP expand the perimeter weighting to increase the MOI and position the centre of gravity higher to yield lower-launching, higher-spinning trajectories for more control. The wedges also feature precision-milled grooves, which are varied between the lower-lofted wedges primarily used for full shots and the higher lofts. Four sole grind options add further customisation for fitting while a new shaft and grip combination has reduced overall weight.

UTILITY OPTION

Titleist U-Series utility irons RRP: £245 www.titleist.co.uk Titleist has launched two new utility irons promising greater distance than standard irons along with less spin than a hybrid. The U500 and U510 designs have been created for shotmaking with a compact shape that delivers high launch with a soft landing and precise distance control. The U510 provides hybridlike performance in a forgiving, muscular iron shape while the U510 creates such a powerful combination of distance, launch and forgiveness that Titleist engineers were able to create a 16-degree one iron that is playable from the tee and fairway. Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth, Jimmy Walker, Ian Poulter and Bernd Wiesberger have already used the irons on tour.

Mizuno MP-20 irons RRP: MB £150 per iron MMC £165 per iron HMB £180 per iron golf.mizunoeurope.com Mizuno has unveiled three new MP-20 Series iron models featuring copper-plating within the heads to add layers of feel at impact. The three new MP-20 iron models are Grain Flow Forged in Hiroshima, Japan and feature copper plating, first used in the brand’s legendary TN87 model, for enhanced feel at impact. The new family comprises MP-20 MB, MP-20 MMC and MP-20 HMB models, each with its own unique appeal and designed to stand alone or blend into custom combo sets. MP-20 MB is a pure muscleback while the MP-20 MMC is billed as an elite players’ cavity, representing the second-generation of Mizuno’s multi-material concept. The MP20 HMB is a new hollow-headed hybrid muscle back design. Meanwhile, a blended set for left-handers, the MP-20 SEL package, has also been announced.

GOLFERTIPS

FIND THE SWEETSPOT Striking the ball with the middle of the putter is key to improving your consistency on the greens, and this drill gives instant feedback on how well you strike your putts. First, use a line on the ball to match up with the line on your putter to ensure you are addressing the ball with the centre of the clubhead. Next, place some Blu Tack on your putter, roughly a ball’s width apart – this will provide instant feedback on whether you’re finding the centre of the face or not. Spend some time practising with this in place and you’ll find more consistency on the greens in no time.

EXCITING CHANGES AHEAD... Like many golf clubs the SOUTH SHIELDS GOLF CLUB has seen some interesting times over the years and has recently embarked on a dynamic strategic stance for the future and have employed Tim Kent as the club’s General Manager to support the board in moving this successful facility

forward. Tim recently moved up from West Yorkshire where he was Manager of Halifax Bradley Hall. The 2019 Club Captain Martin McCririck is well known in the area for his golfing prowess playing of +2 and is probably one of the youngest and lowest handicap Captains in the country. Recently

coming 2nd in the 72 hole Durham Strokeplay Championship. Following on from the success of Local senior legend NIgel King who became the first senior winner of the Durham seniors in 2019. SOUTH SHIELDS GOLF CLUB is also driving forward with success in the junior ranks with Ben

Willis taking the U14 Durham Championship title for the second year in a row. Manager Tim Kent, is keen to highlight that Head Green keeper Phil Hargrave takes great pride in the high standard that the greens are maintained in which really makes the course stand out amongst the crowd. With the fact that the course sits on a Limestone base it remains payable all year round while many courses suffer from wet winters. The course remains playable all year around which makes membership of this club a key consideration for the all year round golfer. The club also have some thing special for visitors as the club run a Gents Winter Open series from October to March. With competitive Green fee rates for the casual golfer or visiting society. With the opportunity to Stay and Play and enjoy a few days by the seaside on either half board or full board rates at local Hotels.

Welcome to your reader feedback page. We want to hear your likes, dislikes and funny golfing stories, and if you’d like to make suggestions about Northern Golfer, let us know. We want to hear from you!

Wilton Golf Club professional James Kraus featured in our June edition and has since completed his charity challenge, playing 10 rounds in one day to raise money for Bowel Cancer UK. James said: “I’m pleased to say that I managed to complete all 10 rounds! The event began at 4am and I finished at 8.20pm. I covered just over 50 miles in the process and I took 780 shots in total. My best round, 70, was surprisingly my ninth round of the day. I managed to cover the first five rounds in just under seven hours. After a quick break, fatigue set in a little bit, my average round times slowed and I had a bit of a wobble midway through round nine. A brief rest and a lot of support and encouragement got me back out there. I had a great support team around me who encouraged me all of the way, and although I had a few aches, pains and blisters, I was still able to get out the next morning and play 18 holes at 8.30am. So far we’ve raised just over £3,000.” Well done James, a fantastic effort!

Recent Durham County Golf Union events have yielded a pair of holes-in-one. Cameron Wallace (Seaton Carew) aced the seventh hole at Bishop Auckland Golf Club during the Durham County Championship while Daniel Jones (Eaglescliffe) aced the first hole at South Moor Golf Club in the Durham Third Division Championship.

Daniel Jones is congratulated by Durham County president Tony Garrity on his hole-in-one

It was great to receive a letter from our friend Martin Ball, the former general manager of Eaglescliffe Golf Club, who has relocated to Scotland and is running Ladybank Golf Club in Fife. He wrote in to share some of his experiences north of the border: Having spent my life living either in or around Eaglescliffe, it’s surreal to be living just outside St Andrews. From visiting the town on 10 occasions over 40 years, I’m now within a few minutes of the 18th green. The amount of golf played at St Andrews is staggering. There are six courses (including the Old Course) on the links land to the north of the town, and five more just outside the town boundary. At this time of year, every one of them is full from early morning to late afternoon. It was special to be in St Andrews to watch Shane Lowry win The Open and it will be fantastic to be here when The Open returns in 2021. An Open Championship at St Andrews brings in an enormous number of additional visitors into Fife. The six St Andrews links courses are closed for the Open which means visitors have fewer courses to play. The tour operators and visitors are already making their bookings - my own club, Ladybank, already has a number of bookings in place. Thanks for getting in touch Martin. Hopefully we’ll see you at St Andrews in 2021. 46 NORTHERN GOLFER

Work is underway at Close House ahead of the return of the British Masters in 2020. A new back tee is being added to the seventh hole (pictured below), creating a more dramatic tee shot. Further work is being carried out on the second hole, with a new bunker being added at the back of the green, and at the fifth – where the original estate wall is being recreated 60 yards from the front of the green. On the 17th, a new, flatter landing area is being added to the right side of the fairway. The British Masters returns to Close House July 30-August 2, 2020. For more information and to book tickets go to www.closehouse.com

Sadly, this year’s North of England Youths event at Middlesbrough Golf Club has been cancelled due to low entry numbers. The 45th staging of the championship had been due to take place in August. The tournament organisers hope to bring the event back next season.
