LOOKING AHEAD Dear Supporters of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Thanks to our many supporters in New Orleans and around the world, the Ogden Museum celebrated another impressive year in 2018. The Museum’s core mission to broaden the knowledge, understanding, interpretation and appreciation of the visual arts and culture of the American South continued to have an expansive reach and to resonate with diverse audiences. Over the course of the year, the Museum welcomed 80,000 guests from 52 unique countries, who viewed works by 296 different artists across 27 exhibitions. Our educational programs also maintained significant stride by reaching more than 16,500 individuals through the department’s numerous programmatic offerings. It is gratifying to see how the Museum’s endeavors to reach new audiences in meaningful ways has taken shape. All of our accomplishments would not be possible if not for the vital donors and supporters who allow the Museum to be such a dynamic institution. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, with sincere gratitude, I’d like to extend a heartfelt thanks to those that helped the Museum achieve another exceptional year. We look forward to your continued support as the Museum carries on its educational mission and continues to grow as a regional museum with a national mission and international audience.

Sincerely,

William Pittman Andrews Executive Director

SPOTLIGHT NEW SOUTHERN PHOTOGRAPHY New Southern Photography, curated by Richard McCabe, Ogden Museum Curator of Photography, explored the role photography plays in formulating the visual iconography of the modern New South. Regional identity in an interconnected and global world was central to the exhibition’s narrative. Themes and ideas addressed included memory, the experience of place in the American South, cultural mythology and reality, deep familial connections to the land, the tension between the past and present and the transitory nature of change in the New South. The largest photography exhibition at the Ogden Museum to date, this exhibition featured the work of 25 emerging, mid-career and established photographers. Each photographer was individually showcased with a monographic installation focusing on a single body of work within the context of a group exhibition.

“A new exhibition challenges the perceived identity of the American South, at a time when the definition of regionalism itself is in flux.”
