LETS HAVE SOME FUN!

I've never been one to actually pick a New Year's resolution and definitely have never been able to keep one - but for some reason this year is different. No I don't have a New Years resolution per se, however I'm more determined than ever to be more intentional with my time. Yeah, yeah I know it's not technically the New Year anymore but why not start some new habits?

We all know life is too short and we need to capture every moment with our friends, family and even community. That's why we have put together this ENTERTAINMENT issue of Oh18! You've heard us say it before and we will say it again, there is a lot going on around Chickasha. If you don't think so, maybe it's time to look with a different perspective. I know something as simple as going to dinner doesn't sound like "something to go do," but it does when you are going with a friend you have put off meeting with for months. You see it's not always about the entertainment that's most important, it's the with . By that I mean, who are you doing things WITH . Anything can be fun when you are in good company, and in good community.

Lucky for you, we have compiled a fun and unique way of making plans with those you enjoy spending time with. All you have to do is pick the date and be intentional! Play our Oh18 Urban Adventures and see where your night in Chickasha ends up. I assure you, no matter where you go our community will take care of you and ensure you have the best time.

Remember, joy is shared.

Why Chickasha?

When I moved to Chickasha 13 years ago to open a business with my best friend, I had no idea that the Chickasha community would not only bless me with a thriving business but also an amazing family. Everything good in my life I have Chickasha to thank for. I love living here and am excited about all of the growth we have seen in the last few years. I am proud to call Chickasha home.

Let’s keep Chickasha moving forward!

LORA GERSTNER

Tell us a little about who you are and where you started.

I am a wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and hope to be considered a good friend. Although I grew up in a military family and we moved frequently, we definitely consider Chickasha our home. In my previous life, prior to opening the candy shop, I held positions with various industries including college admissions, oncology research, non-profit organization, insurance, and one of my favorite positions was at a local attorney's office. I never dreamed of owning my own business. When we have spare time, our family enjoys participating in volunteer work together and the occasional family trips.

Why did you open a candy shop?

It started as a fun way for our daughter to make a little money while in high school - it was so well received and fun, we transitioned to selling candy from a small, converted pop-up trailer. Our family of three began working together on weekends and holidays while maintaining full-time jobs and attending school. Although it was an incredible amount of work, it was very special to get to go to events and work together. On occasion, we were fortunate enough to recruit my sister and her family, or a friend or two to help us out at events. We had a phenomenal response to our little candy trailer, and we really enjoyed the customer interaction. One day my husband said "You should really think about opening up a storefront soon. If you don't do it, someone else will." So, we took a leap of faith, and we have no regrets.

Why Chickasha?

Chickasha has been our home for the last 18 years. It is where we live, work and where our daughter

attended school. We love and appreciate this community and the support we have been given is unmatched. We received encouragement and support from our friends, family, the Chickasha Economic Development Council, the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce, the City of Chickasha, my employers at the time, local retailers and business owners, and of course, and most importantly, our customers. We can't imagine trying to start a small business in any other community.

What has been your favorite part about owning the candy shop?

Hands down, it is getting to interact with our customers. I absolutely love helping folks find their favorite sweets or assisting them with finding items to build the perfect gift basket. The friendships we have made are invaluable and a few have transitioned into becoming our team members.

What has been the most difficult part?

I would say with any business start-up, it is the financial aspect. You hope in those first few years you are going to be able to bring in enough revenue to pay your rent and employees.

What is the most surprising thing you've learned since opening the store?

I would say I am most surprised by the distance customers have traveled to visit our store. It is incredible to have that kind of reach as a small candy store.

If you could accomplish anything in the next five years with your business, what would it be?

In the next five years, we would love to offer our part-time employees full-time positions, grow our online presence and offer shipping of our products, and continue to build a brand that represents the freshest candy with the friendliest customer service.

Realtor Local THE CRUCIAL ROLE OF A

We live in a technology based world which means we sometimes overlook the need for an in person, local realtor. Local realtors offer invaluable expertise and insight technology simply cannot provide. Here are some reasons we would choose a local realtor and why:

Locals Know Their Market: Local realtors tend to have a good grasp on their market. They understand the best and worst neighborhoods, trends in buyer and seller markets as well as property value and investing potential. This gives them the ability to inform sellers and assist buyers to ensure they are making the best decision possible.

Connection and Community: Locals know locals. They have likely spent years building connections with other real estate pros, contractors, inspectors, potential buyers and sellers. This makes the process of buying and selling significantly smoother for you and gives you access to resources you wouldn't otherwise have.

Personal Touch: With an online platform, you lose the personal effect a realtor can give on your buying/selling process. Your wants and needs may fall through the cracks of an online surface whereas a realtor will use them to pinpoint the perfect solution for you.

Ease of Legality: Buying and selling can be a legal web. Our local realtors are pros at tearing through those intricate webs to create an easy, understandable path through law and regulation. You'll abide by every rule, risk and escape pitfalls with your trusted realtor in tow.

32 \\ MARCH-APRIL 20244

Timing is Everything: In real estate, a moment could change the entire outcome. Local realtors are present in the area you are looking giving them the chance to prompt inquiries, show homes and address any issues quickly and concisely which could be the difference between you finding the home or your dreams or losing it forever.

Local Community: Not only are you supporting your local real estate by choosing a local realtor, you're also supporting your community. Local realtors invest their earnings directly back into their communities, support local businesses and the schools. Working with a local realtor is about more than buying or selling a home, it's about investing and building the community.

We can't stress the importance of using a local pro enough. From market knowledge to personal understanding and community growth, local realtors are the obvious choice. To further help find your realtor, we have noted a few from various real estate groups in our town.

There are many incredible realtors in our community, we encourage you to find the right realtor for you and your family!

THE HISTORY OF CHICKASHA'S

The Johnson Home

Born a Chickasaw cattleman in 1871 near Washington, Henry B. Johnson grew up in Silver City, Indian Territory northwest of Tuttle. He worked on the family ranch near Minco and settled down with his wife, Effie Marchant.

In 1903, they built a beautiful home with white pillars and white marbled floors that remains standing at 628 South 6th Street today. The original home was three stories with three different fireplaces on the first floor, a sleeping porch, library - not to mention the fireplace on the second floor. The third floor was a ballroom used to entertain guests.

After the house changed ownership throughout the years from a rancher/ cattleman to an attorney, it landed with the Williams family in 1943. During this time, the house experienced a fire which destroyed the third floor and damaged the second floor.

After the fire, the house again changed hands in 1961. Jacqueline Kennedy's step-cousin, Bayard Auchincloss, bought the home and moved forward with the repairing the damage. During repairs, the third floor was eliminated and only the second floor was restored as seen in the picture on the following page.

40 \\ MARCH-APRIL 20244
Small Town Stories

At the time Mr. Auchincloss was running for State Legislature in Oklahoma but didn't win. He and his family would eventually relocate to California. Upon leaving, Mr. Auchincloss deeded the house to the Chickasha School district in 1986. The Schools then leased the house to the Grady County Historical Society for $1/month.

The Historical Society would move to their current home on Chickasha Ave in 1998. The Hoffman family would purchase the home and restore the third floor of the Johnson home which you can see today.

Thank you to the Grady County Historical Society for information regarding this article.

In 2024, the spring hair trends are all about embracing natural textures, vibrant colors, and effortless styles that exude confidence and individuality. One of the standout trends for the season is the revival of retro-inspired hairdos with a modern twist. These styles add a playful and nostalgic touch to any look, perfect for welcoming the warmer months ahead.

In terms of color, bold and unconventional hues continue to reign supreme in 2024. From vivid neons to soft pastels, there's no shortage of options for those looking to make a statement with their hair. Balayage and ombre techniques are also popular choices, offering a seamless blend of colors that add depth and dimension to any hairstyle.

Overall, the spring hair trends of 2024 celebrate diversity, self-expression, and sustainability. Whether you're channeling vintage vibes, playing with vibrant colors, or embracing your natural texture, there's something for everyone to explore and enjoy. So why not step out of your comfort zone this season and experiment with a new hairstyle that reflects your unique personality and style? After all, spring is the perfect time for a fresh start and a bold new look.

Flank Steak Tacos with Cucumber Salsa

not your average taco

Ingredients Preparation

Step 1

In a medium bowl, stir the cucumber with the scallions, lime juice, jalapeño, garlic and cilantro to combine. Season with salt and pepper; set aside.

Step 2

Preheat a grill pan over high heat. In a small bowl, combine the salt, pepper, cumin, coriander, garlic powder and chile powder. Rub the spice mixture evenly all over the steak.

Step 3

Brush the steak on both sides with the olive oil. Grill until well browned on the outside and at the desired doneness, about 5 to 7 minutes per side for medium rare. Remove the steak from the grill to rest for 15 minutes.

Step 4

Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Working in batches, place 2 or 3 tortillas in the pan and heat until lightly browned on each side, about 1 minute per side. Repeat until all tortillas are toasted.

Step 5

To serve, slice the steak against the grain into thin pieces and place 2 or 3 slices on each tortilla. Top each taco with about 1 tablespoon salsa and serve immediately.

• 1/2 European cucumber, diced

• 1/2 bunch scallions, sliced

• 1 lime

• 1/2 jalapeño, minced

• 1/4c chopped fresh cilantro

• 1 1/2 tsp salt & 1/2 tsp pepper

• 1 tsp dried cumin

• 3/4 tsp dried coriander

• 1 tsp garlic powder

• 2 tsp chile powder

• 1 1/2 lbs flank steak

• 1 tbsp olive oil

• 12 white tortillas

Makes 12 tacos
