Summer Must Haves! | May June 2024

Listen, I'm going to be honest with you right now. I've been to small towns, medium sized communities, the big city and everything in between and I'm here to tell you, there is nothing out there like our town. Let me explain...

To prep for this issue, we had a plan to use local models, shoot at unique locations specific to Chickasha, borrow summer clothing and accessories from our very own shops and show off all of the wonderful things about this place in one fell swoop.

How did it work out? Better than we could have ever dreamed. We had an abundance of incredible models to choose from who all either call this their hometown or live here now. We asked to borrow a few locations and people not only said yes, but went above and beyond to help us get photos we never could have imagined - including letting a model sit in a brand new, hand built plane. When we walked into shops to simply ask to use a few outfits for the weekend, they gave us more than we asked for and didn't even bat an eye.

This may not seem like a big deal to some, but I've worked in the big city and asking to borrow even a mediocre location meant paying big bucks. Requesting an item to photograph meant leaving your credit card as collateral because they don't trust you to bring it back. Oh, and models? Most aren't nearly as fun, kind or easy to be around as our hometowners.

All this to say, we have the best people, the best locations and most wonderful businesses here and it's easy to take it for granted when we live in it day to day. So stop for a minute this summer and soak in more than the sun - live it up in OUR city!

Inchworms 5 reps

From a standing position; walk your hands out to a straight arm plank and walk yourself back.

On the 5th rep, hold your straight arm plank and alternate shoulder taps.

THE HISTORY OF CHICKASHA'S

The Dixie Department Store

An iconic piece of Chickasha's rich history would be the Dixie Department store which opened originally on March 8, 1919 at 415 West Chickasha Avenue. Cousins, Charles Miller and Ben Levine began the shop in place of the Dugan Store which had been built and opened in 1907. This same storefront still stands today and has housed our very own Grady County Historical Society since 1995.

The Dixie opened with eighteen employees who covered 12,000 square feet of retail space over two floors including mens ware, women's attire, children's clothing and even a full shoe department managed by George Rice who had served with Charles Miller in WWI.

Each year, from the beginning, the Dixie held a "May White Sale" with items featured in sale including petticoats, blouses, spring dresses and hats.

In 1934, the Dixie underwent extensive updates to the cost of $6,000 which was quite extravagant at the time. The upgrades included the large window displays you can still see in the entry today. The renovation also added an entry to the basement level from the street which was the bargain area of the store. Other upgrades included new oak floors along with some fixtures.

In an article from the 1934 Merchant's Journal about these upgrades, Charles Miller was quoted saying, "We are progressing with Chickasha and giving the city a store in which it can justly manifest pride."

This statement is still just as true today as it was then. Chickasha is progressing as are the shops and stores and the pride of each owner in shining brighter than ever.

FUN FACT

The first financial system was comprised of a series of baskets which moved along cables to the accountant's office. This was replaced in 1947 with a vacuum tube system which can still be seen today when visiting the museum.

Strawberry Protein Smoothie

Ingredients

Stay full longer!

• 1 1/2 cup milk

• 1 ripe frozen banana

• 2 cups strawberries

• 1/2 cup vanilla Greek yogurt

• 2 tablespoons vanilla protein powder

Preparation

Step 1

Place all ingredients in a high speed blender, blend for 60-120 seconds until you get a smooth and creamy texture.

Step 2

Taste the smoothie, adding more milk if it's too thick or adding more sweetener if it's not sweet enough for you. Pour into a cup or mason jar. Enjoy immediately.

Prep

Enjoy a smoothie now and refrigerate the rest for a quick and easy smoothie to-go tomorrow! Smoothies are good for 24 hours stored in the fridge. For even more smoothie madness, prep multiple smoothies and store in freezer bags in the freezer. Grab and go as needed!

Friends of the Chickasha Public Library

The Friends of the Chickasha Public Library is just that, friends who support the Library. This organization assists in fostering and nurturing the relationship between the community and Chickasha's Public Library. Through fundraising like the annual Chocolate Celebration, book sales, yard sales and more, Friends of the Chickasha Public Library are able to raise funds to support the Library and all their endeavors. In addition, this group helps coordinate events and secure junior and adult volunteers to work in the Library. The Friends have collaborated with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library and assist in enrollment for any Grady County child under 5 years old. This program provides free age appropriate books per month to the enrolled child. This group is doing wonderful things for our Library!
