Editor’s Letter
This has been another year in which I have had the pleasure of working with so many outstanding people and organizations during the Congress. Working behind the scenes of all the exceptional events has been a remarkable experience which shows me that without the countless efforts by many dedicated individuals, we wouldn’t have been able to make this year such a success.
Inspired by tradition, striving for innovation. The task of bridging the gap between honoring the rich history of the past 50 years and the driving for modernization, materialized as the 50th Anniversary of the All American Quarter Horse Congress celebrated its golden year. As I reflect back on the events of 2016, I am overwhelmed with how blessed I am to be a part of OQHA and the All American Quarter Horse Congress. Diving into the New Year with one goal in mind – developing the Golden Anniversary brand of the All American Quarter Horse Congress – was a monumental task. Everyone leaped into preparations for the celebration of 50 years with new classes, new events, and many other plans to commemorate the Golden Anniversary.
Throughout the year, I have had the privilege to experience the OQHA Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet, Annual Picnic, and several of the remarkable horse shows around Ohio where I continue to meet so many more wonderful faces of OQHA. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the OQHA staff and directors for their never-ending support, encouragement, and assistance throughout the year. I am extremely fortunate to have a wonderful marketing team. I wouldn’t be able to make it all happen without Barbara Aitken, who has truly been a treasure and asset to this team. With her sunshine personality and years of experience, Judy Skidmore continues to be our guiding light in the Press Office during Congress. It was a delight to have Amanda Champa as a marketing intern from The Ohio State University as well. Thank you to everyone that made 2016 such a memorable year, and I look forward to what is in store for 2017!

The Congress Youth Teams were impressive this year, and I cannot express enough how much I am personally impressed with them. The Ohio Quarter Horse Youth Association represented Ohio with pride at the AQHYA World Show. Each youth member showed their dedication in and out of the show ring. Each Youth Team that participated on an Ohio NYATT Team upheld a commitment to their team, and this commitment led them to a team win in the Congress NYATT Tournament. The Ohio Hippology team put in countless hours preparing for their competition and made Ohio proud. The Judging Teams always strived to be the best and was exhibited during competition. I am pleased with each and every youth that partook in one of the Ohio Teams and I thank you for representing Ohio so well. This year at the Congress, the EWD program celebrated its second year and a new program, Heroes on Horseback was Dear Ohio Members, implemented. THE GOLDEN YEAR: ALL AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE CONGRESS CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY MILESTONE
By: Barbara Aitken
The 2016 All American Quarter Horse Congress came to a close on October 30, 2016, after 25 days of jam packed action both in and out of the arenas. Memories were made, records were broken, and fun was had by all who walked through the gates. The 50th Anniversary of the iconic event revealed special additions to the calendar throughout the show and was honored in a multitude of ways throughout October. Attendees were welcomed with a 50th Anniversary display attached to the Congress Hall of Fame lounge located in the center of Congress Hall. It featured 50 years of championship belt buckles, a historical slideshow, and a photo wall along with other memorabilia. Both exhibitors and spectators were given a pair of special edition 50th Anniversary gloves. Marque classes were announced where past winners were invited to participate in awards presentations. Each class winner was also greeted with a special bouquet of flowers, prepared by Elizabeth Gorski of B.G. Blooms. Over 23,500 entries graced the arenas over the entirety of the event, breaking a new Congress record. In addition to regular entries, Cutting, Racing, Cowboy Mounted Shooting, and Team Sorting numbers were higher than ever before. The show started in style with the Reining portion of the show exceeding the estimated number of entries, causing the show to run late into the nights (and sometimes early mornings). The National Reining Horse Association celebrated their 50th Anniversary alongside the Congress, recognizing the state

that started NRHA, Ohio. Before the NRHA Congress Futurity on Tuesday, October 11th, NRHA recognized quintessential members of NRHA whose roots stem from Ohio, including Shawn Flarida, Rick Weaver, Beth Himes, Clark Bradley, Kay Potts, Sid Griffith, and the late Bill Horn and Dale Wilkinson during their NRHA Jubilee. A great addition to the Reining class slates included Para Reining that made its debut in 2013 at the AQHA World Championship Show. Exhibitors competed in Levels 1-4 with both NRHA patterns and modified patterns to fit each exhibitor’s needs. Riders of various physical and mental capabilities defied the odds as they rode in the Celeste arena bringing spectators to their feet in awe, admiration, and applause.
A new class featured this year was Heroes on Horses, designed for the United States military veterans who are involved with a P.A.T.H. riding facility or have a disability rating from Veterans Affairs. Not a dry eye was in the stands when each horse and rider team was announced during the precompetition presentation. Exhibitors competed in Dependent or Independent Walk/Trot classes.
The Congress Mercuria World Series of Cutting and Congress Bridleless Cutting sponsored by Cinch, PBR Touring Division presented by Ricart Ford, the Congress Freestyle Reining presented by Weaver Leather, and the Congress Masters Western Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle presented by The Equine Chronicle and Cinch surpassed previous years in ticket sales and performances. The Mercuria winners included Open Champion, Phill Rapp and Reyzin owned by Gale Force Quarter Horses, and Non Pro to Kaitlyn Wimberly and Light N
Lily owned by William Martin. The Congress Bridleless Cutting Open winner went to Cullen Chartier and Once You Go Black owned by Alexis Stephas while the Non Pro Champion was awarded to Mike Bowman and Scoot Over Here owned by Paige Bowman. The high energy, crowd pleasing Friday night event, the Congress PBR Touring Pro Division, presented by Ricart Ford, proved to be a success. Cowboy Cody Campbell from Summerville, Oregon rode 8 seconds to beat out the tough competition to gain the top honors. The Congress Freestyle Reining brought the crowd to their feet with the Open and Non Pro Champions. Shannon Quinlan, from London, Ohio, rocked a performance channeling Top Gun with Ms White Cinch owned by Angela Ream. Fredrick Win, a para reiner won the Non Pro with a tribute to wounded warriors with his mare, Stop Sparkie N Spin.
The Congress Masters Western Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle was a night to remember. Jay Starnes and Extremely Late owned by Brenda Yates graced the top of the charts with their win in the Western Pleasure and Beth Case and Because She’s Worth It owned by Thomas Lukenbill won the Hunter Under Saddle. The night marked a special occasion for a long time Congress exhibitor, Rusty Green when he placed Reserve Champion which took his NSBA lifetime earnings to over One Million Dollars, making him the second ever NSBA exhibitor to exceed the million dollar mark (Gil Galyean received the Million Dollar mark at the 2015 Congress). The Congress Downtown Parade thrilled bystanders again this year as local and state politicians and media traded suits and heels for jeans and boots as they rode the streets of downtown Columbus, honoring the partnership between the city of Columbus, Franklin County, the state of Ohio and the Congress. The parade ended at the Statehouse with a brief presentation. The Congress also opened its gates to all local and state legislators to tour the grounds. Awards were presented in at the 50th Anniversary display/Hall of Fame lounge located at the center of Congress Hall. Thank you to everyone who made this year’s 50th Anniversary a special event to remember. The future continually brightens with each passing Congress as the Ohio Quarter Horse Association and the All American Quarter Horse Congress look forward to the next 50 years.

DANCIN N THE DIRT
WALTZS TO ALL AROUND HONORS BY: BARBARA AITKEN
Natalie’s first show with Carter was at the RedBud Spectacular held in Oklahoma City at the first of June. In those few months, Carter’s skills had immensely improved. By August, Natalie and Carter were partnered to defend Natalie’s 2015 AQHA Youth World Champion title in Hunter Hack. The team walked out of the arena as the 2016 Youth Hunter Hack World Champions. Fast forward to October—Over the course of a month, Carter’s success rang loud. Natalie and Carter were Congress Champions in Youth 14-18 Hunter Hack and 9th in Youth 12-14 Hunter Under Saddle. Chuck Briggs rode to Congress Champions in Junior Hunter Hack, Progressive Working Hunter, and Junior Working Hunter, was Reserve Congress Champion in Green Working Hunter, and Brian Holmes was Reserve Congress Champion in Junior Pleasure Driving. He also competed in Junior Hunter Under Saddle with Leslie Lange.
Dancin N The Dirt, nicknamed “Carter” is one extraordinary horse. The 5-year-old AQHA bay gelding hurdled his way into the hearts of the All American Quarter Horse Congress when he was named the 2016 Congress Champion All Around Horse. Natalie Vargo, a 15-year-old high school student at Fairbanks High School outside of her hometown of Plain City, Ohio, bought the horse in January. “My mom, Sandy, kept sending me videos of this really nice horse. He was the most beautiful mover,” remembered Natalie. At the time, Carter lived in Colorado with famed trainer, Leslie Lange and was being trained for the Hunter Under Saddle discipline. Natalie knew she wanted to take a chance on the young horse and decided to try to talk her parents into buying him. She was surprised when her parents greeted her with the news that Carter already belonged to her. Immediately after purchasing Carter, the Vargos placed the gelding in training with Chuck Briggs in Azle, Texas. Carter’s future was over fences. Although Carter was learning the art of hunter horses during the latter months of the winter and into the spring, Natalie was unable to ride him until March. “He jumped green at that point,” which was to be expected, explained Natalie. “Most 5-year-olds are green and sometimes ‘mess around’ when they jump.” With this in mind, Natalie and her parents were unsure if Carter would be shown much in the 2016 show season. Carter had other plans.

Carter competed in eight different classes, in three different disciplines with four different riders. “He was such a trooper!” Natalie beamed. Keeping Carter competitive throughout the month required diligence. “He was ridden every day,” explained Natalie. “On his days off, he was ridden lightly.” Despite his success, Natalie, her parents and his trainers, understood that at his core, Carter was “still a horse.” “He’s lazy by nature,” laughed Natalie. Natalie explained that Carter got tired at the first part of the Congress with all of the fence classes. “We were nervous going into the latter part of the show after being there so long. He still trotted ‘big’ though,” partly in thanks to Ohio’s cooler weather keeping him fresh. “We were so proud of him. Our Congress was really good.” Immediately after the Congress, Carter and the crew traveled to Oklahoma City once again for the AQHA World Championship Show. Carter finished Reserve for the coveted AQHA Superhorse Award, proving his worth even more. Natalie attributes Carter’s success to a multitude of reasons including superb breeding, excellent training, and timing. Natalie exclaimed, “I’ve never had a horse so young that is so good! I knew it could go either way when we bought a prospect [but] I could tell he would be special.” And in less than one year, Carter proved just that- he is special. Natalie continues to commute from Ohio to Texas, where Carter stays at Chuck Briggs barn and is deemed “the favorite”. Natalie hopes to continue riding Carter throughout the rest of her youth career.

3RD ANNUAL SPONSORED BY
BULL RIDING Ohio Quarter Horse Foundation hosted the 3rd Annual Congress Cares Bull Riding event on October 27th. Some of the biggest horse trainers participated in the Calcutta and bull riding action, such as Cleve Wells, Cody Parish, Dakota Griffith, Dawn Baker, Chad Piper, and Pasley Puthoff. Vickie Strickland purchased Wade Parks during the calcutta, who earned the high score in a eld of 33 total bull riders.
Abigail Hardy’s biggest passion in life is horses and she is the first one to admit it. The 8th grader from Jonathan Alder High School in Plain City, Ohio fell in love with horses as a little girl when her parents attended the All American Quarter Horse Congress each year for work purposes. When she was 8-years-old, her parents bought Abigail a cart pony named Kula. From there she rode an Arabian-Morgan mare named Serena, then a buckskin gelding named Duke. She competed in 4-H shows, open shows, some hunter jumper shows and the county fair before she decided she wanted to compete at the Congress. “I wanted to show the Congress since that’s what influenced me to get started to ride in the first place,” explained Abigail. About two years ago, Abigail bought My Secret Past, a 2006 gelding called “Kam”. Since then, the pair has learned to be unstoppable together. “We butted heads for a while when I got him,” remembers Abigail. “I just learned to work with him and form a bond. We became best friends in the process.”
Of course, like luck would have it, they were draw number one in the Working Hunter, the pair’s first class of the event. However, it never truly fazed them. “I’ve never cried over winning something before. But once I came out of the arena and heard my score, I just started crying. [Kam] was perfect.” Abigail’s mom, Wendy felt a sigh of relief after she won the first class, knowing that no matter what happened after that, their Congress would be deemed a major success. Abigail thought differently. “You might have been calm, Mom, but I wasn’t!” exclaimed Abigail. A true competitor at heart, Abigail knew she must stay focused on her remaining classes, including the Equitation Over Fences, which she won at the 2015 Congress. Her dedication obviously paid off. “I knew we had it in us to do well,” said Abigail. “But I felt like all the other kids had a bigger advantage because they had been riding [when Kam was off]. So we went in and I hoped for the best. [Kam] gave be the best rides that he could.”
CONGRESS YOUTH ALL AGE ALL AROUND CHAMPION Abigail rides Kam every day. Her favorite part is the challenge of jumping. With the help of her trainers, Scott Dehilian and Allison Applegett of Wild Oats Farm in Delaware, Ohio, Abigail achieved not only her goal of competing at the Congress, but also becoming a Congress Champion in the process. She won the 2016 Congress Champion Youth Hunter Hack 13 & Under, Congress Champion Youth Equitation Over Fences 13 & Under, Congress Champion Working Hunter 13 & Under and 5th in Youth Jumping. The fact that she won her classes was a bonus for Abigail. Her first priority was Kam’s health, who had been injured earlier in the year with a popped splint, three weeks before the AQHA Youth World Championship Show. Kam spent time off for a few months and only attended one show before the pair competed at Congress.

After her fantastic rides, Abigail knew she was in the running for the Youth 12-14 All Around. She had no idea she was also in the running and leading the Youth All Age All Around. A few days after the Congress, her father came home with a surprise and trophy in hand and explained to his daughter that she won the Youth All Age All Around in addition to the Youth 12-14 All Around. Abigail is continuing to show over the winter months. She will keep showing Kam while she rides her two other horses, Ivy and Kelso, the 2-year-old who she hopes to show next year. She also rides on her IEA team. From a little girl who watched from afar at the Congress to an avid equestrian in the winner’s circle, Abigail’s journey is just beginning.

CONGRESS YOUTH 15 - 18 ALL AROUND CHAMPION
BY: BARBARA AITKEN
In 2007 Ellexxah Maxwell and her gelding, “The Cookie Baker”, won the Small Fry All Around Congress Champion title, making her the youngest Congress winner in history. Nine years later, Ellexxah is no stranger to the winner’s circle. In fact, she’s most comfortable when she’s challenged with a pattern in hand. The reigning 2015 All American Quarter Horse Congress Youth All Around Champion, walked into the 2016 Congress with one goal—leave nothing behind. The 15-year-old from West Mansfield, Ohio paved her way to the Youth 15-18 All Around Championship by placing Reserve Champion in Youth 15-18 Showmanship, 4th in 15-18 Hunt Seat Equitation, 5th in Youth Performance Mares, and 8th in Youth 15-18 Horsemanship. Her list of achievements also included a Congress Champion in NYATT Showmanship, which helped her OQHYA team to a Congress Champion title. Ellexxah and her mare, Zips Bossy Chip, aka Annie, continue to gather points, titles, and break records. Including the points they acquired at the Congress, the pair’s AQHA points total to an astonishing 3800! Despite her success, Ellexxah remains humble saying, “I really didn’t think I’d be able to win an All Around title in my first year in the 15-18 division at the Congress. I was actually really surprised. I’m really excited!” Ellexxah and Annie will continue their journey in the show pen in the 2017 show year in All Around events.

Congress Super Sale C ontinu e s th e Tr adition
“The 50th Annual Congress Super Sale featured the New Yearling Sale Stakes Session, which was met with a lot of enthusiasm and support,” according to Mike Jennings of Professional Horse Services, LLC. “With 105 yearling Western Pleasure prospects entered, the response from sellers was better than we expected. Buyers supported the Yearling Sale Stakes session, as well, by helping the session average $7,858, which is an increase of 15% over the $6,720 average for Yearlings last year. More than 80 yearlings are paid into the Sale Stakes so the estimated purse for the 2017 classes should be in excess of $60,000. Open and Non Pro divisions will be held for 2 year-old Western Pleasure Horses. The purse will be pro-rated based on the number of entries in each division.” The 2016 Congress Super Sale was held as part of the 50th Annual All American Quarter Horse Congress. Mike and Stephanie Jennings of Professional Horse Services, LLC in Round Hill, Virginia, are the management team producing the Congress Super Sale for the OQHA.
The Open Session offered 61 horses through the sale ring, from which 47 sold to new owners for an average price of $6,170. The completed Sales rate of 77% is strong for consignment auctions. The High Selling Horse in the Open session of the Congress Super Sale at $18,000, was Hip # 160, WhenOnlyTheBestWilDu, a 2013 black gelding sired by Rl Best Of Sudden and out of Only Hot Cowboys. The fancy All Around Prospect was purchased by Josie Stemmler, from Ontario, Canada, from Shane Pope, Agent for Cathy Corrigan Frank. The 2016 Blair Folck Memorial Leading Consignor Award, sponsored by FarmVet was won by Voge Quarter Horses, Julie and Dr. Justin Voge, Whitesboro, TX, by posting gross sales of $68,000 for their group of Yearling Sales Stakes entries.. Rod’s Western Palace annually awards a saddle to the High Point Earning horse, which sold in the previous year’s Congress Super Sale. The 2015 Congress Super Sale High Point award was won by Sharon Fisk, of Seekonk, MA, with the horse she purchased, Images Pretty Kitty. Since the Congress Super Sale last year the mare has earned over 150 points and is currently THE LEADING Open Performance Halter Mare in the AQHA National standings. I held several OQHYA office positions as well as positions with NOQHYA and after my youth career I stayed involved with the youth as the OQHA Youth Judging Team Coach. My passion is helping young people learn about horses and the different opportunities horses can provide for you. OQHA gave me a lot of opportunities growing up such as competing at the Youth World Show, educating me in business meetings and fundraising, competing at Congress on the NYATT teams, college scholarships and encouraging me to be a good leader. One of the reasons I have stayed involved is because I enjoy helping our youth and the opportunities OQHA offers teaches them more than just showing a horse.

So many parents want to get involved but don’t know the first step on how to be involved. Increasing membership and Involvement should be a priority. I will work hard to learn from the experience around me, and contribute all that I can. What do you feel should be OQHA’s top three priorities in the next 2-3 years? 1. OQHA has been diligently working with state government and non traditional sponsors to ensure the continued success of the Congress. While currently in a positive position, we need to continue this mindset to secure the future of the Congress and our association. 2. Continuing to expand the horizons of OQHA is vital. Examples of this are the trail ride, the Southern Belle, the Congress app, OQHA foundation, etc. OQHA must be open to new opportunities and keep up with technological advances, while maintaining the position of promoting the American Quarter Horse. 3. Financial stability continues to be of utmost importance. OQHA is continually working to establish and follow a sound budget, allowing for savings. This is necessary for their continued growth. Please state your involvement in any other equine organizations or other charities, community activities or civic organization: I am currently the President and Executive Director of the National Cutting Horse Association, based in Fort Worth, Texas. I am also a past Vice President of the National Reining Horse Association If you are a current OQHA officer or director, please describe how you have contributed to OQHA during your most recent term: I am the show manager for the cutting events at the Congress. This year, that included seven days of competition in Limited Age Event and Weekend level classes as well as the Mercuria events. What do you feel should be OQHA’s top three priorities in the next 2-3 years? 1. A top priority would be to remain financially solvent 2. We should continue to make sure the Quarter Horse Congress is able to meet the future needs of the horse industry. 3. Another major goal is to promote our western heritage and offer a family friendly environment.

2016 OQHA QUEEN MOLLI JACOBS
As my year comes to a close, I can look back and say that I have made memories that will last a lifetime as your Ohio Quarter Horse Queen. I cannot even fathom that my reign is almost over and that it has been ten months! It has been such a wonderful experience and I am not ready for this experience to end. From Ohio, all the way to Oklahoma, I have gotten to represent OQHA at many different events across the country. I started off my year at the Equine Affaire in Columbus, Ohio, where I realized how cool of an experience I was truly in for. I had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people and realized how many young girls I could have an impression on. From there I went on to the SOQHA Madness in Wilmington, Ohio, where I was able to help out Lauren Harrington, the beautiful and amazing 2015 All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen. In July I was able to spend time at the Ohio Amateur Quarter Horse Association’s Little Buckeye and Buckeye Classic. Both of these horse shows had huge numbers of participants and extremely tough levels of competition. AQHA members from all over the country traveled far and wide to make it to this horse show. Many youth competitors attended in their final preparation for the Youth World Show, as well as many Amateur and Open members were in search of their final points for the AQHA World Show. One of my personal favorite classes was the infamous lead line. I was able to hand out their life sized awards and loved getting to visit with these cuties! In August I attended the Youth World in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I was able to represent the Ohio Quarter Horse Association and

hand out awards to many of our outstanding Ohio youth members! It was such a great feeling to hand out such coveted awards to some of our very own that I have seen work so hard. While in Oklahoma City, I was able to visit with many Ohio youth members as well as other states’ members. It was a great week that I enjoyed very much. My final event was the 50th Annual All American Quarter Horse Congress. I had the opportunity to meet and spend time with many wonderful girls from across the country during the All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen Contest week. We took a field trip to some of the neatest places to eat in Columbus. This was a fun experience for me because even being from Ohio, I was unaware of some of these places. Another exciting thing was all the queens had the opportunity to model in the annual fashion show and sport some of the hottest clothes from vendors at the Congress. My favorite part of the All American Quarter Horse Congress was having the opportunity to visit and sign autographs for many little girls, as well as hand out awards. These two experiences were wonderful for me because the little girls we spoke to are the light of the future and the award recipients were so grateful. It is always a wonderful feeling to hand out awards to people that you have seen work so hard and are finally seeing their hard work pay off. Finally, I want to say thank you to all of those that have stood behind me and encouraged me throughout this year and throughout my life. The Ohio Quarter Horse Association will always be considered as part of my family. I am so lucky to have such wonderful people surrounding me in all aspects of my life. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. See you all at the banquet!
OQHA Queen Candidates
Autumn Thompson
College: The Ohio State University - Communications/Business Honors: - 2016 Tri State Quarter Horse Association Queen - 2016 OQHA Queen 1st Runner Up If you were OQHA Queen... As OQHA Queen I would travel the state volunteering and representing the Association. Sharing in kindness and positivity is the best way to attract others.
Thoughts on the Congress Queen Contest... I would love to see the red carpet brought back to the Crowning Ceremony. I think there should be a judged speaking portion, whether that is a short on stage interview, or a prepared speech. I would also love to see more of a focus on charity work and community service. What makes you unique/sets you apart from other contestants? I did not grow up around horses, so everything I’ve accomplished so far has been with the determination and the generosity of others. With this much passion, it can only get better from here.
Kelsey Dorka
College: The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Current Master of Science student in Health Outcomes and Socioeconomic Sciences - thesis topic: Prescription opioid treatment impact on patients and health-care providers. Honors: - 2013 & 2014 Northern Ohio Quarter Horse Association Queen - Overall Top 5 Congress Queen Contest 2013 & 2014 - Graduate Research Assistant - Study to Measure the Impact of Pharmacists & Packaging on Medications Non-Adherence - Data collection, organization, analysis, and report writing. If you were OQHA Queen... If I were to be crowned Ohio Quarter Horse Association Queen, my main objective during my reign would include the promotion of programs and publicity tailored toward youth and small fry contestants to increase participation. I personally believe that it would be highly beneficial for OQHA to design a clinic as a resource where a professional horseman or woman would provide education and encourage involvement in the quarter horse industry exclusively for youth and 4-H members. Thoughts on the Congress Queen Contest... In the Congress Queen Contest, I would like to continue to see a Community Service Recognition Award given to a queen contestant who has used her position as the state titleholder to promote philanthropy both inside and outside of their horse involvement. An exemplary queen should give back to the community and volunteer her time in addition to promoting her state organization throughout the year. What makes you unique/sets you apart from other contestants? My outgoing personality and professionalism, combined with my communication skills and knowledge of the industry distinguish me from other competitors. Ohio Quarter Horse News 43

Pancakes for the People The Amateurs hosted their ever popular all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast during youth weekend at the Congress and welcomed a record crowd. Over the years, the OAQHA event has become a mainstay for exhibitors looking to warm-up and satisfy their appetite while helping support a great cause. Proceeds from the breakfast will be used to help children in need at both St Jude and Toys for Tots. If you missed this year’s event, be sure to make plans for next Congress where the Amateurs hope to expand their efforts and raise even more to benefit their two very worthy charities.

OAQHA Nominees
Justin Billings
Candidate for President
Please describe what you do for a living. I manage my family’s quarter horse breeding and showing farm and serve as a consultant for our construction business.
What is your educational background? I attended the Ohio State University where I studied finance and equine science as part of their honors program. Please discuss your past and current involvement with OQHA. I have been a member of OQHA for over 20 years where I started as a youth and served as a multi-year Director. I then moved on to the amateur program where I have served as Director, Treasurer, 2nd Vice-President and 1st Vice-President. Most recently, I have had the honor of serving as the 2015 and 2016 President. I am an active member of both the horse show and executive committees and a founding member of our Buckeye Classic horse show. Please state your involvement in any other equine organizations or other charities, community activities or civic organizations.
Fred Borer
Candidate for 1st Vice President
Please describe what you do for a living. My title is Senior Service Specialist with BCD Travel, a Travel Management Company. No, I am not a travel agent, so do not ask me about discounts to Disney, LOL. Thought I was finished with my project last bio, ha ha, I am still implementing other companies with an automated approval system for our clients we arrange corporate travel for. Our company is passionate on how can we make life easier for our customers. What is your educational background? After 12 years in school, I was not about to go back into another school type program. I did have some continued education after some time off, nothing that amounted to a degree; life and work are my degrees. Please discuss your past and current involvement with OQHA. In the past I have been a Director for OAQHA and very involved with our show The Buckeye Classic. Currently sitting as the 1st Vice President, I thought it would be an easy position, boy was I wrong. Would I change anything about it, probably not? I prefer to be busy and this group will always keep you on your toes. I am running for my second term for 1st VP. The Ohio Amateurs participate in various events throughout the year. Our pancake breakfast each year during the Quarter Horse Congress, always a huge hit, majority of the proceeds benefit St. Jude’s and Toys For Tots. Please state your involvement in any other equine organizations or other charities, community activities or civic organizations.
I am a lifetime member of both the AQHA and NSBA. I am currently serving as a national NSBA director and AQHA committee member. I am also an active member of the advisory board for the All American Youth Horse Show. I am happy to support the American Horse Council along with the AQHA and OQHA Foundations. If you are a current OAQHA officer or director, please describe how you have contributed to OAQHA during your most recent term. I am proud to be part of a team who believes in the little guy and who offers a family friendly atmosphere at our Buckeye show where we welcome and encourage new exhibitors to try an AQHA event here in Ohio. It’s encouraging to me that we have the support of so many great sponsors, many from the OQHA family, who help us pull off an event like the Buckeye. My biggest contribution is sharing a small part in that.
What do you feel should be OAQHA’s top three priorities in the next 2-3 years? I would like to see the momentum that OAQHA and BWHA has built together with the Buckeye continue as we settle into our new home at the World Equestrian Center in Wilmington. I believe it’s important for us to remain innovative and keep fresh ideas that bring our grassroots people back, grow the OQHA base and allow others to see that we are an approachable, fun group of quarter horse enthusiasts right here in Ohio. I have been a volunteer for New Vocations for the past six years. Their mission is very dear to me so I try to help when I can. The endless hours this group puts in for the organization is astounding. I have also helped with Toys For Tots, I am saddened that there are families out there in hard times, even the smallest gift to them means the world. If I can help make that happen, that is pretty much the gift I need. For The Buckeye Classic, I nominated myself as the volunteer coordinator. It is cray cray the amount of hours the Ohio Amateurs and the Buckeye Western Horse Association put into the shows. One year ends and we are at it for the next year. 2016 Buckeye Classic we had 15 1st time exhibitors, that a very nice amount. I am so proud of the fact we have been voted as one of the Top Ten horse shows in the USA years prior, maybe 2016 we will be awarded that accomplishment again. No worries if we do not, that is not our goal, bringing members back to showing AQHA and also in the state of Ohio is more important. If you are a current OAQHA officer or director, please describe how you have contributed to OAQHA during your most recent term. Right now I am the OAQHA 1st Vice Pres., not a position you can be a slacker, not like 2nd Vice Pres. (just kidding Scott) Uh see question 4, after all that who has time for anything else?
What do you feel should be OAQHA’s top three priorities in the next 2-3 years? #1 Create a positive atmosphere for new exhibitors to get people back to showing at AQHA shows during our horse show The Buckeye Classic #2 Maintain the patronage we all have now. Do this by thanking every single person that passes that entrance gate. Every exhibitor and sponsor needs to know how much they mean to us. #3 Stand by our mission, be honest, own mistakes and again thank everyone you see.

Please discuss your past and current involvement with OAQHA. I was an OAQHA Director from 1990-1996 but because of work, we had to move south. In 2014 I was appointed to a Director position. In 2015, I was elected a Director and in 2016 I was appointed to the Show Committee, and was awarded the President’s Award. I believe that all the directors work very hard to put on the 2nd biggest show in Ohio which is also a Top Ten AHQA show. You can only do that with a group of dedication directors who are willing to work the many hours it takes to put on a horse show of this size. I am very proud to be a part of this group and hope you will let me continue, to so I am asking you vote for me, so I can help the amateur’s grow and get more involved.

Our entire family is committed to OQHA and helping to build a strong future for OQHA and OQHYA. What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? I think our top priorities should be: 1. Strengthen the engagement of members at our youth meetings through educational events like we started in 2015. We need to show the value to our members so they will want to attend, learn, and hopefully we will be better members, a stronger association and better leaders. 2. I would like to see OQHYA be more financially independent so we can provide financial support for more members to attend YES, national level educational speakers at our meetings and be able to do charitable contributions for horse groups or associations in need. 3. OQHYA officers need to partner with the OQHA board members to educate each other about our goals and mission to ensure we are working in unison. What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? 1. As always membership is important we want Ohio’s Youth and even those who hardship into the buckeye state to encourage young riders to join our organization. The youth of tomorrow with be the next generation of OQHYA and we want to ensure that there are plenty of youth who get to enjoy OQHYA like we do. 2. Involvement is also very important, we want every member of OQHYA to be able to enjoy the opportunities OQHYA offers its youth. Whether it be selling tickets , painting stall decorations, or even participating in one of our youth educational programs. 3. Last but not least, with all of the good things we do, why not give a little back. Whether it’s a canned food drive, a clothing drive, pop tabs, old horse gear, you name it! It’s not hard to give back to the community so why don’t we?

If you are a current OQHYA officer or director, please describe how you have contributed to OQHYA during your most recent term. I have been an active member of the OQHYA for almost three years now. From member to director, I have volunteered on numerous committees. I have attended meeting and conference calls for the committees. I pride myself on being dependable and responsible. From helping to promote OQHYA at the All American Youth Show to unloading goodies at the Youth World for the Ohio team, I love this organization and want to help in any way that I can. What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years?
1. Keep reaching out…always promoting and encouraging new membership. We need to reach the youth exhibitors that show QH and get them involved. Youth show 4-H, IEA. We need to reach riders that are interested and keep the association moving forward. 2. Have the Ohio youth officers and directors meet a few times a year with the adult officers and Directors of OQHA and OAQHA so we may exchange ideas, get to know each other and allow us to have a voice in our future. 3. Continuing education. This is so helpful. From learning about different disciplines and judging techniques to real world financial issues and planning for our future. We need to keep learning!

Explain your current involvement with horses: I show in the 14-18 All Around events with my horses Too Lazy To Zip aka “Gus”. Our biggest accomplishments are 3x Reserve Congress Champions, 3x World Show Finalists, and NYATT Congress Champions. Are you involved in any other horse-related organizations? If so, please list them and state your level of involvement: I am not currently in any other horse organizations. I do take jumping lessons once a week at a local farm.
If you are a current OQHYA officer or director, please describe how you have contributed to OQHYA during your most recent term. I am currently an OQHYA Director. In this past year, I have contributed by participating in the AQHYA World Show in August. I also attended the AQHA Y.E.S Convention in Amarillo, TX this past July. At the Y.E.S. Convention, we learned about leadership and also met many new lifelong friends. What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? 1. Our first priority should be making all youth feel welcome into OQHYA during meetings and at the shows. 2. We should focus more on community service and give back to the horse
Please state your involvement in any extracurricular activities and any charities or community activities: I volunteer at Fieldstone Equestrian Center where I clean stalls and help saddle horses. This farm gives children with disabilities a chance to ride and interact with horses.
Abigail Hardy
Candidate for Treasurer How are you currently involved with OQHYA? I was previously an OQHYA Director. I attended most meetings. Explain your current involvement with horses: I currently show English All Around with my horse, My Secret Past, aka “Kam”. We show Working Hunter, EQ Over Fences, Hunter Hack, Jumpers, HUS, Eq on the Flat, and Halter. This year I won the Non Pro Derby at the Big A, as well as placed 3rd overall in the Open. At this year’s Congress, we won all 3 of our Hunter classes and placed 5th in the Jumpers. This lead to us being the 12-14 All Around Champs as well as the All Aged Youth All Around Champions. Kam and I have now won 4 Congress titles and multiple Reserve and NSBA titles at the Congress. Are you involved in any other horse-related organizations? If so, please list them and state your level of involvement: I put all my time into taking care of my horses and learning all I can with them. As of right now, I am not involved with anything else.
Please state your involvement in any extracurricular activities and any charities or community activities: I always try to help out with anything that is needed, whether it is selling 50/50 tickets or setting up at the World Show. I try to be helpful as I can be. I would love to learn how to be better. If you are a current OQHYA officer or director, please describe how you have contributed to OQHYA during your most recent term. I would like to build youth attendance to Ohio horse shows. Especially in the 13 & Under age group. I think we need to build the hunters up in the OQHYA. NYATT was also very disappointing to me this year when I realized as a 13 & Under I could not make the team I tried for because the qualifying is on a 30 pt scale instead of a 9 point scale like all around points. Therefore, as a 13 & Under who wanted to compete, I could not be a part of the team because 13 & Under never has huge class numbers. I would win my class out of 17 kids and a person in 14-18 would not even win their class and still have the same amount of points as me because their classes are bigger. That makes it impossible for a 13 & Under to qualify. What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? No answer

I helped design and put up World Show Decorations and helped with the Congress Youth Bash by putting up signs and decorating. What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? The top 3 priorities should be: 1. Continue to grow the Ohio Quarter Horse Youth Association and encourage new memberships from the High School Rodeo, NRHA & NBRA organizations 2. I want to run for Reporter because I am comfortable with social media and my good friend has a social media company and is helping me develop ideas for improving OQHYA social media presence and I would enjoy learning more about our members by doing Spotlight articles. What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? 1. Make sure our meetings and horse shows are fun and inviting to everyone. 2. I would like to see the youth directors have 1-2 meetings a year with the adult directors so we can get to know one another and talk about common goals for the future of OQHA and the Congress. 3. I feel it is important to continue the growth in membership by spreading the word about what we do and inviting more youth to join and make personal connections through our social events. One on one conversations and personal invitations to come to meetings make it less intimidating for others to become involved with this great group. I think the Re-Ride program that we collected items for as a community service project was important and would like to continue this and possibly try to support an organization that provides mental health therapy to youth and families using horses such as the the organization, PBJ Connections in Pataskala. I also think we should try as a group to come up with another fundraising project that most members would like to participate in. We have some very good projects already but it would be beneficial to have something everyone feels they would be capable of participating in.

I would like to become more involved in making decisions that help youth share their talents, resources, interests, and enthusiasm through the OQHYA. As a first generation horse owner, I want to ensure other youth can benefit as much or more than I have. I especially want to reach out to youth who do not yet have friends or family already involved in the industry. If provided the honor to serve as director, I promise to be a positive role model and dedicated to my roles and responsibilities as a director. What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? OQHYA’s first priority should be to encourage, support, and help educate all youth whether their goals include qualifying and preparing for experiences at a World Show, getting over first show jitters or rookie mistakes, learning more about how to responsibly interact and care for horses, or helping out at shows. OQHYA’s second priority should be to increase the number of active youth members and provide more opportunities for youth to become welcomed, involved, and connected. Lastly, OQHYA’s priorities should include helping youth members overcome the barriers that separate each other due to disciplines, training barns, or experience. We need to unite in order to advocate and serve the organization that has served us so well. We need to ensure that the next generation of youth can continue to make Ohio one of the best places for a young horse lover to learn, grow, and show.

What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? 1. I feel that we need to get more youth members involved at the meetings because some members do not feel comfortable voicing their opinion . 2. OQHYA needs to update their social media more frequently to get more activity and awareness of members. 3. The youth need to feel like they are part of something and have a fun event to look forward to attending.

What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? I think working towards achieving a larger participation of Ohio youth in our organization is very important. Along with this, creating more opportunity for youth to get involved in OQHYA should be a priority, I think that the more people that can be involved, the better. Animal welfare should also be a priority of OQHYA, as an animal focused organization, and participating in community service activities in order to give back. I think OQHYA should focus on things that will not only benefit our association, but those around us, and our communities.

I am leading Ohio in 13 and under HUS, second in Level One Showmanship, 6th in Level One HUS and 5th in 13 and Under Showmanship. OQHYA Nominees Horseback, a nonprofit organization for equestrians with disabilities and therapeutic riding. My family and I also support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundations (JDRF) in hope to find a cure for Type One Diabetes, a disease I hold close to my heart because I was diagnosed with it when I was three years old. If you are a current OQHYA officer or director, please describe how you have contributed to OQHYA during your most recent term. If I am elected, I will voice my opinion on topics at hand- always keeping the values of the rest of the OQHYA in mind. I will give my thoughts and ideas, but will respect what the other members believe as well. What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? I feel that OQHYA’s top three priorities should be gaining new members, becoming more involved with charities, and putting more effort into the team competition at the AQHA Youth World Show. Because people age out of the youth organization every year, it is important to gain new members join order to keep the organization alive and growing. Becoming more involved with charities will show that Ohio youth care about more than just horses- we’re also compassionate and care about our community. Finally, even though we already work hard for the team competition, Ohio is in a tough division. If we work even harder, our results can prove to the rest of AQHYA that Ohio is a strong state and an incredible association to be a part of. I am currently in EOQHA, NOQHA, and OMIQHA. I do not hold any position in any of these organizations. From the age 8-11, I was in a 4-H group called Rough Riders and I was a reporter for one of those years. Please state your involvement in any extracurricular activities and any charities or community activities: At my school, I am involved in cross country and track. I was also chosen to tutor elementary students to help them with their reading. I am also involved in JTI and have attended a day full of leadership games with other students, both younger and older. If you are a current OQHYA officer or director, please describe how you have contributed to OQHYA during your most recent term. I will contribute my time and creativity to OQHYA, if I am elected. What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? I feel that OQHYA’s top three priorities should be to: 1) Host more social events so more people get involved in our organization. 2) Have a meeting at every horse show to discuss things and so exhibitors can have some time to socialize with their competition, since we don’t have much time in the warmup pen to wish people luck or congratulate them. 3) Since I have never been to a meeting, I’m not quite sure what happens at one, but I feel like we should do more team games with people we rarely ever talk to, to help build relationships with new faces.

I would like to help get more youth involved and become more active in various committees. I have a deep passion for the American Quarter Horse and believe I could bring new ideas to OQHYA. What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? 1. I believe that OQHYA should continue to work on getting more youth involved. We should bring more attention to other opportunities for youth who love the American Quarter Horse but may not be able to show, such as judging team, hippology, and speech contests. 2. I believe our meetings should include educational opportunities and team building opportunities for youth to learn and build long lasting friendships with their peers. (More meetings similar to OSU Veterinary visit.) 3. From this past year it seems that the team was successful in fund raising and that those funds were used effectively. I believe we should do more.
