The congress is a very special tradition that is greatly anticipated and beloved by 7 Ohioans. I applaud the officials of the Ohio Quarter Horse Association for the work they

FROM THE MAYOR
WELCOME FROM THE OHIO EXPO CENTER
As fall approaches, there are traditions so many look forward to – the leaves changing colors, football season, Halloween, and, of course, the All American Quarter Horse Congress.
Here at the Ohio Expo Center, we know what to expect in October: thousands of hardworking exhibitors from across the country all coming together at the world’s largest single-breed horse show. This prestigious event has a place in the hearts of so many people who have been impacted by this event over the years. Whether they have exhibited, won, visited, or purchased a new pair of boots or belt buckle, the Quarter Horse Congress is the place to see and be seen.
When I’m walking through the grounds in October, it is easy to see just how much work all of you contribute to make this great show a success. The dedication that goes into participating in the Congress, and organizing it, is impressive. I’m thankful that we’ve been able to work closely with OQHA to continue to host the Congress here in Columbus.
Best wishes for a successful and exciting show, and good luck to all those who participate in this esteemed tradition!
Sincerely,
Virgil L. Strickler, CFE General Manager Ohio Expo Center & State Fair

WELCOME FROM THE CONGRESS QUEEN
Welcome to Columbus!
Hello and welcome to the 2022 All American Quarter Horse Congress! As the 2021 Congress Queen I am so excited to welcome you back to Columbus, Ohio for the largest all-breed horse show in the world. What I love most about the Congress is that there is truly something for everyone. From ranch and cow classes to performance classes and speed events, October is an action-packed month which features the highest level of equine athletes and equestrians. While the horses are always the main event, the Congress Trade Show can’t be missed. Be sure to check out Congress Hall and the Annex for all your show and western needs. Once you have shopped till you dropped, wander out to the midway to get something to eat. I personally recommend cinnamon bun from the Sweet Shop, a Congress fixture and my favorite dessert!
To all those competing, good luck and have FUN! The month goes by surprisingly fast so make sure you take it all in and be proud to be competing at such a prestigious event. A few tips if you have never been to the Congress before. First, download the Horse Show Tracker app to keep up with the show on your phone. Also, for any fellow students out there, head over to the Congress Classroom in the Annex for internet and a quiet place to keep up with your studies – I made use of it more than once last year. Finally, don’t forget to purchase your tickets for the Congress Special ticketed events, the Professional Bull Riding event on October 7th, the Freestyle Reining on October 8th. The Freestyle Reining is not only an exhilarating event, but we will also be crowning the 2022 Congress Queen in the intermission. You won’t want to miss it! Another event that I want to highlight is the Heroes on Horses class. This inspiring event honors servicemen and women healing through participation in horses.
Thank you for joining us in Columbus this year, we are so excited to have you. Welcome once again and have the best time!
Warmly,
Darcy Woods, 2021 Congress Queen

Advice to First-Time Exhibitors
The sound of hooves on asphalt paths. The calm of dark before a 2:00 a.m. practice ride. The brisk morning air as Ohio transitions from summer into fall. The electric feeling that can be found nowhere else.
All of these are well-known to veteran exhibitors of the All American Quarter Horse Congress. But try to imagine the first time you experienced these and so many other sights, sounds, smells. The first-time experience at the Congress is something that is almost indescribable.
Someone’s first time competing at the Congress can be overwhelming at times. What advice would you give to someone attending their very first All American Quarter Horse Congress?
Three long-time Congress exhibitors, Melissa “Missy” Thyfault, Ellexxah Maxwell, and Kylee Wiseman were asked to give their advice to first-time
exhibitors.
Advice I Learned From
Missy: One thing I had to learn was that it was a marathon and not a race. Things lined up and organized in advance, horses and riders healthy and prepared going in. And to stay focused
The fact it, you and your horse are a team.
on what you have to do to be ready regardless of what anyone else may be doing. It is a great experience and can be enjoyed most by being as ready as possible.
Ellexxah: Someone told me to just do my best, because at the end of the day that’s all you can really do. The fact is, your horse and you are a team, but being a team with a living breathing animal sometimes isn’t the easiest. I was
34 2022 ALL AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE CONGRESS
taught to bring the best of what I could do that day and be proud of even the smallest accomplishments.
Kylee: One thing I was told was to not let the size of the show and the people intimidate you. You need to go in and show your horse the way you know how to.
Preparation is Key
Missy: The best way I have found to deal with nerves at a big show is to make sure I have done everything possible in advance to be prepared. Then I know I have put forth my best and that’s all anyone can do. It is important to trust your work and not do more than what you would normally do to prepare just because it is the Congress. I do remind my clients of their successes so they remember that they are capable and are ready to do this. I also believe in positive visualization. Picturing yourself doing an event as perfect as possible in advance. So many people
think of all the things that can go wrong. This is the opposite approach and can get a person out of their own head.
Ellexxah: I am always listening to music before a show. I actually have a playlist made on my phone for horse shows. I normally have my headphones in and listen to it in the morning that I show when I’m getting ready, lunging, even warming up.
Kylee: When I show the pleasure, I do not get nervous. It might be because I have done it so many times before. When I started the reining, it was a different story. One thing that can ease my mind is running the pattern in my head start to finish up until I go in. This has helped me in the reining, and I imagine it can help with all pattern classes.
Hiccups Happen to Everyone
Missy: One Congress hiccup for me would be the time I

Mistakes happen to everyone, no matter how many times you’ve been to the Congress.
overslept early on in my career. Always have a second person checking on you and ready to bang on your camper door if need be!
Ellexxah: One year getting ready for the halter I sprayed something, I can’t even remember what, on my horse’s mane. Whatever it was caused all my bands to break! So, there was frantic rushing and almost missed the class because we were trying to re-band my horse. Mind you, this was two years ago and I’ve been showing at the Congress since 2007. Mistakes and hiccups happen to everyone no matter how many times you’ve been to the Congress.
Kylee: This didn’t happen at the Congress, but at another prestigious show. At the NRHA Derby, I was running to my last stop and my horse hit bad ground, stepped on his foot, and I fell off. It really could not have been prevented and I learned it happens to everyone and it made me feel better. Sometimes in the rail classes, a spot on the rail is difficult and you have no control over that.
Just the Normal Routine Missy: My horses are used to the Ohio climate, but they still take a couple days to settle into Congress. Lunging, ponying and the hot walker all help the settling in process. I try to ride the young stock at quieter times, such as early morning or middle of the night inside. It totally
depends on the individual and what they require. I definitely do a lot of night riding to get horses in the arenas and feel that’s the number one thing that gets younger stock ready.
Ellexxah: We try to come in several days before we show. This way the horses can get a day just to rest and settle in. Then we just prepare them like we would at home, it allows you and the horse to ride like you have been every day. Too often people try to change their routine once they get to a horse show. The key is to treat it no different than if you were riding at your own barn.
Kylee: I am from Ohio, so the horses are already used to the weather and things of that nature in Ohio. As for being at
the grounds, I like to get my horses acclimated to the surroundings and the people by getting them out and walking them around so they can see and get used to the new sounds and smells. I will always get my horses in the arena they will be showing in so they will see the banners and the surroundings and feel the dirt so when I show them, they aren’t as likely to spook or not be paying attention to me.

What Would You Say?
Win or lose, being on a horse chasing your dreams at the Congress is something to always be proud of.
Can’t Miss This
Missy: I usually don’t have time, but the bullriding is awesome. I think you have to do the Sweet Shop if you don’t usually. And Schmidts German food is amazing. And, of course, I absolutely love watching the 2 and 3 YO futurity classes if I am not in them! Especially the new Maiden 2YO [Hunter Under Saddle] class. The shopping is of course amazing. And Puppy Alley!
Ellexxah: Literally everything. Give yourself time to be able to look around at the amazing vendors, watch classes and/or events maybe you’ve never seen. Definitely try the food, it’s to die for. Also, go and walk through the barns. You’ll want to see the amazing set ups that everyone has done.
Kylee: Most of the time I stay at the grounds because I have always thought of Congress as a horse show/fair. There is always going to be something to watch, eat, see, or buy. If you want to get away from the grounds, Polaris Parkway Mall is amazing.
Irreplaceable Experience
Missy: The most important thing I have gained from the Congress is confidence in my own ability. It has also given me a huge appreciation for what it takes to put together such an amazing event. We are very lucky to be able to compete there and do what we do.
Ellexxah: The most important thing I’ve gained showing at the Congress is a family. I’ve met so many fantastic people at the Congress, many of which I consider to be family. I quite literally grew up at the Congress. I was literally three days old the first time that I was at the Congress. It has become not only a home to me but to many others. I’ve gained so much knowledge that I will never be able to replace.
Kylee: One of the most important things I have learned is don’t take one class for granted. You might not know how much you love showing in a certain class until you can’t anymore. Every time you jog in that pen, take it in and enjoy the ride. Whether you win or lose, being on a horse chasing your dreams at the Congress is something to always be proud of.

The Excitement
Missy: My favorite thing about showing at the Congress is the excitement that is in the air. Whether it’s a firsttime exhibitor taking it all in, or showing one you’re excited about, or lining up in front of a judge. There are so many special moments that you just can’t get anywhere else with the history that backs up the Congress. It is a show that carries more respect than any other.
Ellexxah: My favorite thing about the Congress is the diversity of people from so many different disciplines that it brings. It’s really cool to see just how versatile the Quarter Horse is. It’s also really interesting to see just how many variations of colors, heights, and events that one horse can bring in just a month.
Kylee: My favorite thing about showing at the Congress is the memories that can be made. Seeing all your friends from other states, watching classes, and just hanging out and being around others who share the love for horses. Congress is towards the end of the year, so seeing how your hard work and practice pays off is really exciting. Congress has always been my personal favorite show because it is in the fall which makes it nice on the people and the horses when you aren’t dripping sweat all the time. I also like
the prizes if you win. The beautiful blue neck ribbons, the trophies, and the saddles. The memories I have made at the congress will be memories I will never forget.
Final Advice
Missy: To all the first-time exhibitors I would say enjoy the moment. Take it all in and just be mindful of your journey to get here. Congress is an experience we are lucky to have, so find all the good it has to offer!
Ellexxah: My advice to a firsttime exhibitor would be at the end of the day it’s just another horse show. There’s no need to change anything that you’ve been doing all year. The biggest thing you need to do is to do your best and to be proud of what you do. There has been plenty of times I haven’t had my best goes at the Congress.
However, I had to take from those the improvements that I’ve made from the last and be proud of what my horse and I had improved on that day. In the end, have fun and enjoy every second of it.
Kylee: I would tell them to enjoy every moment. Ride every single stride. It is okay to get nervous, it means you care. Try not to let the nerves overcome you. Show your horse to the best of your ability and to the best of their abilities. Ride so that when you come out of the pen regardless of the placings, you can say that was the best ride you have ever had and if it wasn’t, you can say I tried my hardest. Have fun! Showing is very competitive, but it is much more meaningful when you have fun doing it.

CHRISTIAN HORSEMEN ANNOUNCING THE MESSAGE
OF PRECIOUS SAVIOR
SUNDAYS @ 9:00 AM
MEZZANINE IN VOINOVICH
The All American Quarter Horse Congress will continue offering worship services held each Sunday, beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the Voinovich Mezzanine (upstairs of Voinovich Barn).
Since 1967, Congress has provided worship services to attendees during the show where spectators and workers join together to worship with other horse-loving Christians at services provided by Christian Horsemen Announcing the Message of the Precious Savior (C.H.A.M.P.S.).
Christian Horsemen Announcing the Message of the Precious Savior
C.H.A.M.P.S. was formed in 2002 to facilitate fundraisers for injured or sick horsemen who are in financial need or without health insurance.
C.H.A.M.P.S. is devoted to Godly encouragement and support of all individuals within the equine industry. Their goal is to encourage people to worship in their own way.
C.H.A.M.P.S. is a volunteer ministry and all donations are used to help people in need or to sponsor worship services at horse shows. For more information about C.H.A.M.P.S., visit their website: c-h-a-m-p-s.com.
The services will be led by Scott Brown, of Hilliard, Ohio.

This: A Look at Quarter Horse Graphic Design
Although The All-American Quarter Horse Congress, the world’s largest single-breed horse show, only happens one time a year, months and months of preparation in many different facets of the equine industry occur in order to make a few very special weeks happen.
When you think about aspects of the equine industry and what needs to happen in order to make a horse show run, graphic design might not be the first thing that comes to mind; yet, it has become a huge part of the equestrian culture. Fantastic posters can be seen all over social media nowadays, advertising stallions, exhibitors, trainers, and farms. These bright, eye-catching designs become especially popular as we near The Quarter Horse Congress, which not only acts as a competition, but a huge opportunity for businesses to advertise their stallions, riders, and more.

We asked Victoria Delarosa of Valor Designs as well as Courtney Moses of Courtsey Productions to share some insight into this important field.
Delarosa describes her entry into equine graphic design as “a happy accident.” Although she graduated with a degree in Family & Consumer Sciences, Delarosa worked for the Army reintegrating soldiers with their families, but eventually found it hard to build a career with having to move every other year. Delarosa explains that between moves, “a friend asked if [she] would be interested in building her website and designing an ad for her stallion.” This then turned into more and more designs until she officially started Valor Designs twelve years ago.

It was slightly more natural for Chown, who started her business managing social media accounts of equestrian businesses after graduating college. That eventually morphed into a sole focus of graphic design.
Both Delrosa and Moses credit their background in horses to much of their success in graphic design. Delrosa grew up with a family that raised Quarter Horses and showed them herself. Having loved to read Quarter Horse Journal when she was a kid, Delarosa jokes how “[her] neighbors heard [her] shriek of excitement when Debbi Trubee asked if [she] would be interested in designing Lazy Loper and Invitation Only ’s websites.” She also describes how her background has given her a leg up in her graphic design with a better understanding in “conformation and movement” as well as a stark interest in breeding and bloodlines.
Similarly, for Moses, her days are “100% horses.” If she is not riding, she is working on an ad. She, too, credits her equine experience for helping her develop “a good eye for the way a horse should look in an ad.”
In terms of design itself, Delarosa explains that “the most important thing to consider is the objective of the ad” and how what she decides to put in a stallion ad is actually much different than an exhibitor ad. She also describes that she believes in less is more when it comes to the photos used, usually employing one or two amazing photos rather than overwhelming the page with many. Moses also mentions how she

likes to riff off of catchy names of the horses she is designing an ad for.
Moses and Delarosa both credit the people and horses as their favorite part of being an equine graphic designer. It is the equestrian community’s love for horses and willingness to help each other as main reasons both love being a part of the crazy horse world!

Professional Horseman and Judge
Tony Burris of North Carolina, has been active in the horse world as a trainer, judge and clinician for over 35 years. He currently holds judges cards with AQHA, APHA, NSBA, PHBA, and Appaloosa Horse Club. Tony has raised and trained several World, Congress and NSBA top contenders throughout his career. Although his start was in Futurity, Western Pleasure and All-Around horses, over the past few years he has grown to enjoy Ranch Horse, VRH and cow horse events. He continues to be an avid supporter of the horse industry by showing and training horses for Amateur and Youth exhibitors. Recognized for upholding rules in the show arena, he enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience with others through clinics, demonstrations and Ride The Patterns. Denise Evans
Hailing from Kentucky, Denise Evans currently lives in Blanchester, OH with her fiance Travis Smith. Denise and Travis credit their successes to working together to utilize both of their strengths when it comes to training horses.
Denise started galloping thoroughbreds at the age of 16. After taking a break from barrel racing she returned shortly after her daughter, Allie, was born.
Denise is a 4 time Congress Champion, and 2 time Reserve Congress Champion. On board their homebred Lightningrollingstone she has won a go of the Pole Bending and Barrel Racing sweepstakes. Fun fact, Travis won the Novice Amateur Barrels on her Mother, Sticks Rolling Stone. She is currently the only woman to have won the title of the World’s Fastest Pole Bender. One of her most memorable wins was last year when she and Lightingrollinstone qualified for and won both the “Best of the Best” Barrels and Poles.
Shawn Flarida
At a very young age, Shawn Flarida knew he was going to be a horse trainer. He developed a keen understanding of the reining horse mind, started training horses right out of high school, and never looked back.
Shawn was inducted into the NRHA Hall of Fame in 2011 and set a record as the first rider to ever reach $7 million in earnings. Shawn credits many of his accomplishments to his parents, his family, and to the incredible horses and their owners.
Shawn has made history quite a few times in the reining horse industry with notable wins such as multiple NRHA Open Futurity titles, NRHA Derby Open titles, and NRBC titles, along with several Congress wins. He has also had top finishes and been a crowd favorite at the Run for a Million. Shawn has also acquired 5 gold medals at the World Equestrian Games.

The Southern Belle Program has been a “shining star” in the Quarter Horse industry since its inception in 1994. The Southern Belle Breeders Program, as well as the Southern Belle Horse Show, experienced unprecedented growth and success due to the dedication of its founder, Connie Hill, and show manager, Chris Darnell. The support of stallion owners and the exhibitors have allowed the footprint of the Southern Belle Program to reach major shows throughout the country.
In an effort to perpetuate the Southern Belle Program, and due to its strong ties with the Ohio Quarter Horse Association, administration was transitioned in late 2012. Eager to continue the tradition and partnership, OQHA gladly accepted.
Chris Darnell served the Southern Belle Program, both as show secretary for the Southern Belle Invitation and the administrator of the Southern
Belle Breeder’s Program. She over saw the transition, while Congress
show secretary, Rhonda Harter, lead the transition team, and is currently the direct contact for stallion owners and breeders through the OQHA office.
2019 Breeder’s Classes are open to offspring of stallions that have “SOLD” in the 2019 Southern Belle Breeder’s program. Stallions that do not sell can make their offspring eligible by paying up their breeding at 1/2 the advertised breeding fee plus $100 administrative fee. The minimum a breeding is sold for is $600 which includes the $100 administrative fee.
The Southern Belle Breeder’s ThreeYear-Old Open Western Pleasure Futurity has an estimated purse of $50,000. The Limited division will receive 40% and the Open division 60%. This class will still run concurrently with the NSBA ThreeYear Old Open Western Pleasure Futurity, but all horses must also be eligible for Southern Belle Breeder’s classes as well.

The All American Quarter Horse Congress is the world’s largest single-breed horse show. People travel from not only all across the country, but from around the world to compete at this event. Without the dedication and hard work of a few individuals, the masses would not be here. Established in 1987, the Congress Hall of Fame recognizes those individuals who dedicated their lives to helping the Congress become the success it is today. Originally, four people were inducted, but inductions do not necessarily occur every year. The OQHA’s Hall Of Fame Committee reviews potential candidates for inclusion into the hall of fame every year.
Paul Brown (inducted in 1987)
The late Paul Brown of Newark, Ohio served as the president of OQHA in 1972 and 1973. Brown created and developed the Congress National Youth Activity Team Tournament in 1968 and served as its first chairperson for many years. Brown worked diligently to promote the tournament among AQHA affiliates. Brown also coordinated Congress awards ceremonies for several years.

Later, Dr. Drake became the unofficial historian of the All American Quarter Horse Congress.
Blair Folck (inducted in 1987)
The late Blair Folck of Springfield, Ohio served as OQHA president in 1963 and 1964, as well as 1970 and 1971. Folck developed the concept of the

YOUTH CONTESTS
Since its first year, the All American Quarter Horse Congress has encouraged participation by future generations of the Quarter Horse industry through a variety of youth activities. Aside from competing on a horse, there are many skills professional horsemen and women must possess. These youth activities help prepare young participants for a bright future, in or out of the equine indus try.
For more information about these contests, please contact: Dr. Kimberly Cole at 614-292-2625 or cole.436@osu.edu.
Horse Bowl - Tuesday, October 11th - Rhodes Building
In Horse Bowl, contestants are asked to answer equine-related q uestions in a competitive atmosphere, reminiscent of a game show. Questions are asked in two manners: one-on-one and toss-up bonus questions. Questions involve everything from the evolution of the horse to current equine management practices and equine disease.
Communications - Tuesday, October 11th - Rhodes Building
The Congress Communications Contests were created to help develop public speaking skills and self-confidence in youth. Theses contests require contestants to craft a speech that illustrates a step-by-step procedure and explains why each step is essential to the overall product. Demonstrations go along with the speech, and include v isual aids that enhance the topic discussed.
Contestants’ speeches are judged on their organization, content, accuracy, stage presence, delivery and desire to communicate.
Hippology - Wednesday, October 12th - Rhodes Building
Hippology covers many of the same topics as Horse Bowl, but ask s students to apply their knowledge. Points are awarded in three separate segments. The first is examination, which can include a written test, as well as slides that must be identified. The second segment requires team members to travel to different stations where they must correctly identify different equine-related items, such as types of grass or bones in the horse. The final segment requires contestants to judge four horse show classes, much like the judging contest. Once all three segments are completed, each te am is given a single question to answer, which may require an impromptu answer or preparation and explanation.
Collegiate and Junior Judging Contest - Wednesday, October 12th - Coliseum
Each year, students from across the country compete in the All American Quarter Horse Congress Collegiate and Youth Judging Contests. College, 4-H, FFA and Quarter Horse affiliate associations form judging teams that converge to the Congress to find out who has the best eye for horseflesh. Teams range from three to four members for youth or four to five members for intercollegiate. Teams in both divisions place four Halter classes and eight performance classes. Classes can incorporate mares, stallion or geldings and any num ber of performance classes, including Western Pleasure, Hunter Under Saddle, Reining, Western Riding, Hunter Hack, Pleasure Driving, Trail, Horsemanship or Equitation. Specific classes will be announced as ‘oral reasons’ classes. Oral reasons are a chance for contestant to explain their placings.
Both divisions award individual and team high-point awards in H alter, performance and oral reasons categories, as well as overall awards. Scores are deter mined based on the accuracy of contestants’ placings as compared to the placings of a panel of approved judges.

YOUTH DUMMY ROPING
THURSDAY OCTOBER 10TH
The Cinch Dummy Roping Contest allows young cowboys and cowgirl s a chance to showcase their roping skills on the big stage of a Congress show arena. Contestants are divided into two age groups: 8 & under and 9-12 years old. Contestants compete by roping a bones heel o matic.
The competition begins with round one, where two loops are thro wn. Contestants who catch the steer both times advance to round two, if they ar e 8 & under. Contestants in the 9-12 division who make it past round one advance to the next round. In the finals, a distance line is marked and increases u ntil a winner is crowned. Horn size may also be changed to determine a winner.
Three legal catches will be used in the 8 & under division. “Sl ick horns” only will be used for the 9-12 division. Boundary lines will be used in all rounds. Contestants may not rope the entire dummy and no fishing is allowed.

COWBOY MOUNTED SHOOTING
Cowboy Mounted Shooting is the fastest growing equestrian sport in the nation. The event combines precision with speed as participants guide their horses through a designated pattern shooting two .45 caliber single-action revolvers (loaded with specially prepared blank ammunition) and attempt to pop as many balloons as possible, all while racing against the clock. Participants are also required to dress in traditional western style clothing or a long sleeve western shirt, five pocket blue jeans covered by chaps, western boots and a cowboy hat.
Divisions
Classes are divided by age and gender, as well as by level to create a wrangler division (11 and under), men’s division, a women’s division, and a senior’s division, with levels 1-6 in each of those divisions. All riders begin at Level 1 and advance up through the levels by accumulating wins.
Patterns
With 50+ possible patterns, there is always something new and exciting to watch during Cowboy Mounted Shooting competition. Each pattern consists of 10 balloons, spread throughout the arena. The competitor must shoot the first five balloons before moving to the second set of five balloons (designated by different colors). The second set, called the Rundown, are usually all in a row, straight towards the finish line.
The main match of this shoot has 4 stages (patterns). Stages 1 and 3 run as follows: All the Level 6s, All the Level 5s, All the Level 4s, All the Level 3s, All the Level 2s, All the Level 1s, AQHA, Wrangles Limited, Wrangles Open. Stages 2 and 4 run as follows: Wrangles Limited, Wrangles Open, All the Level 6s, All the Level 5s, All the Level 4s, All the Level 3s, All the Level 2s, All the Level 1s, AQHA.
Scoring
Competitors are scored on a combination of time and accuracy. For various mistakes, riders incur penalties: five seconds for each missed balloon, five seconds for dropping a
gun, 10 seconds for not running the course correctly and 60 seconds for falling off your horse; thus making accuracy more important than speed, especially since a typical pattern is usually run in just 15-35 seconds.

188 2022 ALL AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE CONGRESS
The All American Quarter Horse Congress would not be a success without the strong ties that exist between the Ohio Quarter Horse Association and our Show Partners.
Together, OQHA and its Show Partners strive to complete the goal of promoting the American Quarter Horse breed. Their enthusiasm and dedication to not only the Quarter Horse, but to the Congress itself, is much appreciated.
AQHA
Headquartered in Amarillo, Texas, the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) maintains pedigree and registration records for more than four million registered American Quarter Horses. AQHA also oversees showing, racing and recreational activities that promote the Quarter Horse. Since 1967, AQHA has played a large role in the show, offering a full slate of AQHA-approved classes.
NRHA
The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) was formed in 1966 with the mission of promoting the sport of Reining worldwide and was originally headquartered in Coshocton, Ohio. One of the NRHA’s most popular events, the NRHA Futurity, was held at the All American Quarter Horse Congress for 19 years before moving to Oklahoma City, when NRHA moved its headquarters. A full slate of NRHA-approved Reining events, makes the Congress a popular s how for reiners across the country.
NSBA
Promoting the pleasure horse has been the mission of the National Snaffle Bit Association (NSBA) since it was founded in 1983. To accomplish this mission, NSBA approves futurity horse show events, including dual-approval with AQHA events. Since the association’s beginnings, it has worked closely with the All American Quarter Horse Congress, which allows a full set of NSB A approved events to be held at the Congress.
189 2022 ALL AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE CONGRESS
NATIONAL YOUTH ACTIVITY TEAM TOURNAMENT
The National Youth Activity Team Tournament (NYATT) is the most popular and largest youth event at the All American Quarter Horse Congress. Bringing together more than 60 teams and 400 youth from state and regional Quarter Horse assoc iations nationwide, NYATT promotes horsemanship and sportsmanship in a one-day event.
Each team may consist of to fourteen riders, with no more than two members competing in each of the seven NYATT classes: Barrel Racing, Horsemanship, Hunt Seat Equitation, Hunter Under Saddle, Reining, Showmanship, and Western Pleasure. Oftentimes, NYATT is so competitive that youth must fight for a spot with their asso ciation’s team in the spring.
At the end of the day, contestants do not go home empty handed. Medallions are awarded to the top 15 individuals in each class, with class winners rec eiving the coveted Don Bell Congress bronze trophy. To determine overall team standings, points are awarded for each individual’s efforts in every class, with first place receiving 10 points, second place nine points, and so on.
New this year, OQHA has also invited IEA riders to participate as an exhibition team. Per the NYATT rules, only contestants 18 years or younger as of January 1 showing registered Quarter Horses and sponsored by a state or regional Quarter Horse Association may compete. As part of a pilot program for OQHA, IEA riders will compete in a Division III category against other NYATT teams. Unlike traditional IEA shows, IEA NYATT riders will participate on their own Quarter Horses (owned or formally leas through AQHA)
The 2022 NYATT competition will be held Sunday, October 16. The day will conclude with NYATT awards, where every team is recognized for the accomplishments of participating in the tournament, as well as honoring the top overall teams in each division.

2022 ALL AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE CONGRESS NYATT TEAMS
Wishing Our You Team e Best of Luck at e 2022 Congress NYATT
Laurel Daniels & My one N only girl Hunt Seat Equitation
I am so exited to be showing my first Congress with the Tri-State youth team. I also was state champion last year in as well as competing in YEDA. I have had horses my whole life and they live at home with me. I’m also competing in individual equitation, horsemanship, showmanship, and hunter under saddle at the Congress.
hays daniels & my one N only girl Horsemanship
I’m 13 years old. I have been riding and showing since I can remember. I was a 4-H state champion last year in horsemanship. I also compete in YEDA qualifying for nationals. I’m so excited to be a part of the Tri-State youth team this year.
charity Tellish & Good Kahlua Shomanship
I am an 11th grade student at South Side High School. I will be competing in Showmanship at Congress and am honored to represent TSQHA. I would like to thank my parents for investing their time and money into my hobby of showing horses. I also would like to thank Paula Guerrieri and Jimmy and Linda Becker for teaching me to how to ride and show horses. I can’t thank these people enough for the amount of guidance and encouragement they have given me. In school I love math and playing basketball.
EMMA TETRICK & BLAZE ON THE BORDER Horsemanship
I began riding at age 5. I got my first horse at age 6. I will be competing in Horsemanship for the team, as well as Trail on my own. I recently received an All-Around from AQHA and was 4th in the Justin Level 2 Exhibitor of the Year for 11 and under. I play volleyball and basketball. To me, riding horses is fun while also terrifying and frustrating at times. I am in accelerated courses at school in hope to do something with biology or chemistry when I grow up.
Sophia Parish & simmer on Down Showmanship
I’m in 9th grade at Blackhawk high school. I take both geometry and algebra 2 because I would like to be an engineer in the future. I have only had my horse for a year and we have made a bunch of progress in such a short time, especially in showmanship. I would also like to thank my parents for everything that they have done for me and Candy. I would like to thank my dad for being my trainer and putting up with me when I get frustrated. Thank you so much!
Annaliese Pivato & Naturally smokin Hunter Under Saddle
I’m 11 years old and in 6th grade. Although, Naturally Smokin and I have only been together a short time, I’ve already set big goals for us. I have always ridden Western Pleasure so falling in love with this Hunt Seat horse opened the door to a whole new passion. He was an incredibly patient teacher and is now an amazing partner in and out of the show ring. I’m excited and thankful for the chance to be a part of the TSQHYA NYATT team this year!
Olivia StouDmire & Willy Miss My Chex Western Pleasure
I began riding horses 8 years ago. I will be competing in western pleasure for the team as well as showmanship and horsemanship on my own. I am very involved in FFA, 4-H, junior fair board, I play varsity volleyball, all while taking college credit courses in high school. In addition to showing horses, I show livestock year-round. I hope to pursue a career in the livestock or equine industry. I would like to thank TSQHA, my trainer, Nikki Bailey, my parents and my horse show family for all the support and encouragement.
savannah vaughn & OnlyondaySthatendiny Hunt Under Saddle
This year I will be showing in NYATT HUS for the team as well as 14-18 showmanship and HUS individually. I fell in love with horses at a very young age and have been showing since I was 8 years old. I graduated from Norwayne High School this past May and turned 19 in July so this will be my last congress before I head off to college full time. I decided to take a semester off to prepare for the congress, but in the spring I will be studying to become a radiology technician.
You Adivsor
T.S.Q.H.A. is very proud of our youth for their hard work and dedication to not only the organization but to their equine friends, their studies and their other extracurricular activities as well. You are the future and your futures are looking bright.
T.S.Q.H.A. would also like to thank our extraordinary youth advisor, your support and dedication to our youth is amazing. Thank you Marsha!

2021 CONGRESS QUEEN

It is hard to believe a whole year has passed since I embarked on this Congress Queen journey. This has truly been the opportunity of a lifetime and I still have moments where I can’t believe that I am the Congress Queen. Throughout this past year I have travelled across North America to many shows that I had only ever dreamed of attending and met so many inspiring people along the way. The highlight of my time has been meeting with young people and talking about our shared love of the American Quarter Horse. I hope I left as positive an impression on them as was left on me by past Congress Queens whom I looked up to when I was little. Some individual moments that stand out to me include over 30 entries in the leadline at the Sun Circuit, speaking with the Lexington County 4-H club about my journey to become Congress Queen, running a coloring contest at the Little Buckeye, and having
lunch with a group of small fry exhibitors at the Region 6 show. What is always so motivating about meeting these young horse people is their love for the horse, hearing about their goals and hopes for the future, and being able to offer some insight from my own experiences.
This past year I have been struck by the community that exists in the horse industry. Whether it is social events at the shows or helping a member of our community in need, it has been incredible to see the horse community come together across the country. Two events in particular stick out to me. The first being the Aisle Hop event at the Region 6 show. Each barn had a theme and decorated their stall front and served food according to their theme, then everyone was able to visit other barns and try out their food while visiting with other exhibitors. It was such a unique and fun event! The other moment of community which sticks out to me was the blood drive at the NSBA World Show in support of Brady Martin. The turnout for the event was incredible not only did we roll up our sleeves to give blood but in doing so we raised
$550 dollars for the Way to Battle foundation. It is moments like that which make me so proud to be a part of this community.
Of course, I need to mention the incredible displays of horsemanship and athleticism that I was privileged to watch this year. Starting at last year’s Congress I remember watching a youth equitation class, the last class of the day, show late into the evening on the rail with no stirrups for multiple laps with no signs of tiring. I watched a select exhibitor win her very first Congress Bronze and her horse promptly rip off his ribbon. Shortly after at the AQHA World Show, I took in the one-of-a-kind Pleasure Versatility Challenge. The Sun Circuit featured the National Championships, a tournament style competition where exhibitors went head-to-head. This was such a cool event seeing an added twist to classes we know and love. The Youth World brought some firsts in the 50-year history of event with Lanie Cornelius winning all the speed events and Justin Ochs sweeping the globes in the roping events. As I approached the end of my reign, I have had many people ask me if I will be sad to pass on the crown. While I think it will be bittersweet and of course I will miss seeing everyone at the various shows throughout the year I am so excited for the next girl to embark on this amazing experience. When I think back to October of last year, I was starting this Congress Queen journey and my Master’s Degree. Now a year later, I have finished my degree and am getting ready to pass on the title. As I close this chapter, I look forward to jumping into the next as I begin my career. While I will miss travelling and attending shows, I know I will still see everyone as a competitor. This is not a goodbye but just a see you later!

Since 1968, young women from all over the world have made the trip to Ohio for the chance of a lifetime. Annually, affiliate Quarter Horse associations send contestants to compete at the Congress for the title of All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen. The Congress Queen serves as an ambassador of the show, welcoming spectators and exhibitors alike. In fact, the Congress Queen does so much during the show that she becomes one of the most memorable faces each year.
The Queen’s reign, however, does not end on October 23rd. She makes appearances at many national events, including the AQHA Convention, AQHA World Shows and other major horse shows throughout the entire year. Aside from horse shows and AQHA events, the Congress Queen shares her love and knowledge of the American Quarter Horse with students, youth teams, 4-H and FFA groups. Past Queens have also been involved
with charity groups, such as Special Olympics and handicapped riding programs.
All queen candidates that compete at Congress must represent a state, regional or provincial Quarter Horse association. Candidates compete by participating in a three-part test. The first portion, worth 40 percent of the contestant’s total score, is a written examination of the AQHA Official Handbook of Rules and Regulations. Next is an oral interview, which is also worth 40 percent. In this section, contestants are judged on their poise, appearance and personality. Finally, the last 20 percent of the competition is based on a Horsemanship pattern, in which contestants are judged by a panel of AQHA-approved judges on their performance. The goal of the Horsemanship class is to demonstrate excellent riding ability and horsemanship skills. The candidate who receives the highest overall score is crowned the All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen.
The 2022 Congress Queen Contest begins on Wednesday, October 5th with a queens dinner with OQHA officials and interview judges, oral interviews on Thursday, October 6th, and the written exam on Friday, October 7th. The Queen’s Horsemanship class will be held on Saturday, October 8th.
The 2022 All American Quarter Horse Queen will be crowned Saturday, October 8th during the Freestyle Reining.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
The All American Quarter Horse Congress hosts a multitude of disciplines within the AQHA horse show. Class descriptions are provided to help first time spectators and even seasoned exhibitors distinguish various events being held throughout the show.
Hunter Hack
Hunter Hack is a transitional class between Hunter Under Saddle and Working Hunter. Obstacles are to simulate those found in a hunt field. This event requires the horse and rider to move freely and easily over both small fences and on the flat. The hunter hack horse should move in the same style as a working hunter. In this class, horses jump two fences, ranging in height from 2.3ft to 3ft set in a straight line or diagonally across the arena. A ground line on the approach side of each fence is mandatory. After completing the jumps individually, finalists are brought back to the show arena to show along the rail at a walk, trot, and canter both ways. The class will be judged on style over fences, even hunting pace, flat work, manners, and method of going. Scores will be based 70% on individual fence work and 30% on rail work.
Hunter Under Saddle
Hunter Under Saddle was initially developed to determine which horse was most suitable for covering ground when following hounds across the field. Hunters will be shown at a walk, trot, and canter both ways of the ring and should back easily and stand quietly. When asked to extend the trot or hand gallop, they should move out with the same flowing motion. The
purpose of the Hunter Under Saddle class is to present or exhibit a horse with a bright, alert expression, whose gaits show the potential of being a working hunter. This class will be judged on performance, condition, and conformation. Maximum credit shall be given to the flowing, balanced, willing horse. The poll should be level with, or slightly above, the withers to allow proper impulsion behind.
Hunt Seat Equitation
Hunt Seat Equitation is designed to evaluate the exhibitor’s ability to perform various maneuvers on his/her horse which provides a base for natural progression to over fence classes. The various maneuvers are provided in a designated pattern format. The communication between horse and rider through subtle cues and aids should not be apparent when performing pattern work. Equitation is judged on the rider and his/her effect on the horse. Exhibitors are to be scored 0-infinity, with 70 denoting an average performance. The individual maneuvers are scored in 1/2 point increments from a low of -3 to a high of +3 with a score of 0 denoting a maneuver that is correct with no degree of difficulty. The penalties are minor - 3 points, major - 5 points, and severe - 10 points. A final score of 0 to +5 will be given for overall form
and effectiveness after each run. This class is only available in the youth and amateur divisions.
Working Hunter
The Working Hunter is a representative of the type of horse used in the hunt field. He should possess manners, jumping ability, style, pace, and quality. The working hunter must be able to demonstrate his ability to furnish the rider with a smooth comfortable and safe ride. Emphasis is placed on the gracefulness and consistency of the Quarter Horse’s ability to complete a course of at least eight jumps, with obstacles made to simulate fences, natural brush, and walls that might be found in a hunting field. The heights of the fences range from a minimum of 2.6ft to a maximum of 3.3 ft. Scoring shall be from 0-100 with 70 considered average.
217 2022 ALL AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE CONGRESS
Halter
A halter class is defined as a class where the horse is judged based upon its conformation. The purpose of the class is to preserve American Quarter horse type by selecting well-mannered individuals in the order of their resemblance to the breed ideal and that are the most favorable combination of balance, structural correctness, and movement with appropriate breed and sex characteristics and adequate muscling. The horse should be a balanced athlete that is uniformly muscled throughout their body. Classes are divided by age and sex of the horse. Horses will be judged based on movement in the walk and the trot while being led by the exhibitors. Horse are then lined up to be judged on conformation based on the judge’s discretion.
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Showmanship
Showmanship is designed to evaluate the exhibitor’s ability to execute, in concert with a well-groomed and conditioned horse, a set of maneuvers prescribed by the judge with precision and smoothness. The pattern should be performed while exhibiting poise and confidence, and maintaining a balanced, functional and fundamentally correct body position. The appearance of the exhibitor should be neat, clean, and appropriate western wear must be worn. The individual maneuvers are scored in 1/2 point increments from a low of -3 to a high of +3 with a score of 0 denoting a maneuver that is correct with no degree of difficulty. The penalties are minor - 3 points, major - 5 points, and severe - 10 points. A final score of 0 to +5 will be given for overall form and effectiveness after each run.
This class is only available in the youth and amateur divisions.
Western Pleasure
In Western Pleasure, the horse’s easy-going disposition, smooth way of going and response to changing gaits are put to the test. The Western Pleasure horse should be a pleasure to ride. All exhibitors work at the same time and travel along the rail going both to the left and right at a walk, trot, lope and back as well as transitions. Judges are looking for horses with a reasonable length of stride that gives a pleasant and smooth ride. This class is judged on performance, condition, and conformation of the horse. Credit will be given to the horse that is under light control and without intimidation. The following are requirements in order of priority for evaluation of western gaits - correctness, quality, and degree of difficulty. The headset should be carried at an angle that is natural and suitable to the horse’s conformation at all gaits. A horse should move its head no lower than level, and its nose should be in front of vertical.
Western Horsemanship
Western Horsemanship is designed to evaluate the exhibitor’s ability to execute, in concert with their horse, a set of maneuvers prescribed by the judge with precision and smoothness. The pattern should be performed while exhibiting poise and confidence and maintaining a balanced, functional and fundamentally correct body position. The ideal horsemanship pattern is

exact with the rider and horse working in complete unison, executing each maneuver with subtle aids and cues. The individual maneuvers are scored in 1/2 point increments from a low of -3 to a high of +3 with a score of 0 denoting a maneuver that is correct with no degree of difficulty. The penalties are minor - 3 points, major5 points, and severe - 10 points. A final score of 0 to +5 will be given for overall form and effectiveness after each run. This class is only available in the youth and amateur divisions.
Western Riding
Western Riding is designed to demonstrate and evaluate the horse’s quality of gaits, lead changes at the lope, response to the rider, manners, and disposition. The judge or show management will select one of eight patterns to be performed. The horse should perform with reasonable speed, and be sensible, well-mannered, free and easy moving. Credit shall be given for, and an emphasis placed on smoothness, and even cadence of gaits (i.e., starting and finishing pattern with the same rhythm), and the horse’s ability to change leads precisely, quickly and simultaneously both hind and front at the center point between markers. Exhibitors will be scored from 0-100 with 70 denoting an average performance. Points will be added or subtracted from the maneuvers on the following bases, ranging from plus 1 ½ to minus 1 ½: -1 ½ extremely poor, -½ poor, 0 average, +½ good, +1 very good, +1 ½ excellent. Maneuver points
are to be determined independently of penalty points.
Trail Trail is designed to demonstrate the performance of the horse over obstacles with emphasis on manners, response to the rider and quality of movement. Credit will be given to horses negotiating the obstacles with style and some degree of speed, providing correctness is not sacrificed. Horses should receive credit for showing attentiveness to the obstacles and willingly responding to the rider’s cures on more difficult obstacles. Horses will be penalized for any unnecessary delay while approaching or negotiating the obstacles. In this class, exhibitors follow a pattern through a series of obstacles which include opening, passing through and closing a gate, jogging or loping over logs and backing through L, U, or V-shaped configurations. Other obstacles may vary, but come from an approved list: crossing a water hazard (ditch or shallow pond), carrying a familiar object from one point to another, riding over a wooden bridge, putting on and removing a raincoat, removing and replacing materials from a mailbox, turning 360 degrees in a tight area and side passing. Exhibitors will be scored from 0-infinity with 70 denoting an average performance. Points will be added or subtracted from the maneuvers on the following bases, ranging from plus 1 ½ to minus 1 ½: -1 ½ extremely poor, -½ poor, 0 average, +½ good, +1 very good, +1 ½ excellent.
Maneuver points are to be determined independently of penalty points.
Pleasure Driving
The purpose of this class is to evaluate the horse’s ability and pleasurable attitude while pulling a cart. The horse should have an engaged trot with more impulsion and a long ground covering stride. Style, conformation, and safety are paramount in this class. A pleasure driving horse should carry his body in a naturally balanced position with a relaxed head and neck. This class will be judged 80% on the horse’s performance and suitability for assuring a pleasurable drive, with a maximum of 20% on condition and conformation at the judge’s discretion. The gaits that will be called both ways of the ring include the walk, park gait, and road gait. The horses also will be asked to back in the middle of the arena after they lineup.
219 2022 ALL AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE CONGRESS
Ranch Riding
The purpose of the Ranch Riding horse should reflect the versatility, attitude, and movement of a working horse. The horse’s performance should simulate a horse riding outside the confines of an arena and that of a working ranch horse. This class should show the horse’s ability to work at a forward, working speed while under control of the rider. The overall manners and responsiveness of the horse while performing the maneuver requirements and the horse’s quality of movement are the primary considerations. The required maneuvers will include the walk, trot, and lope both directions; and the extended trot and extended lope at least one direction; as well as stops and back. The optional maneuvers may include a side pass, turns of 360 degrees or more, change of lead (simple or flying), walk, trot, or lope over a pole(s); or some reasonable combination of maneuvers that would be reasonable for a ranch horse to perform. The judge or show management must choose one of the 15 patterns published in the rulebook. Each horse will work individually; performing both required and optional maneuvers and scored from 0-100, with 70 denoting an average performance. Points will be added or
subtracted from the maneuvers on the following bases, ranging from plus 1 ½ to minus 1 ½: -1 ½ extremely poor, -½ poor, 0 average, +½ good, +1 very good, +1 ½ excellent. Maneuver points are to be determined independently of penalty points.
Reining
Reining is designed to show the athletic ability of a ranch type horse in the confines of a show arena. In reining competition, exhibitors are required to run one of the 15 approved patterns. Each pattern includes small slow circles, large fast circles, flying lead changes, rollbacks of the hocks, a series of 360 degree spins done in place and the exciting sliding stops that are the hallmark of the reining horses. To rein a horse is not only to guide him but to control his every movement. Any movement on his own must be considered a lack of control. Exhibitors will be scored from 0-infinity with 70 denoting an average performance. Points will be added or subtracted from the maneuvers on the following bases,
ranging from plus 1 ½ to minus 1 ½: -1 ½ extremely poor, -½ poor, 0 average, +½ good, +1 very good, +1 ½ excellent. Maneuver points are to be determined independently of penalty points..
Calf Roping
Calf Roping, commonly known as Tie-Down Roping, demonstrates the horse’s usefulness for traditional ranch work. The event begins when the exhibitor enters a box, where they must wait calmly for the calf to be let out of a chute. The exhibitor stays behind a barrier to give the calf a head start. Once the calf is released from the chute, the horse must run to the calf, rate the speed, and position the exhibitor to throw a loop to catch the calf. Once captured, the horse stops suddenly and stands still while the rider dismounts and ties the calf’s legs together. The tie-down roping is judged on four different maneuvers: box and barrier, running and rating, stop and working with a rope. There is a one-minute time limit. Scoring will be from 0-100 with 70 denoting an average performance. Each maneuver
220 2022 ALL AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE CONGRESS
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
will be scored from a +3 to -3, in ½ increments.
Breakaway Roping
Similar to Calf Roping, Breakaway Roping horses start behind a barrier where their time begins when the calf is let out of a chute and crosses a flag at a barrier. Exhibitor must race to catch the calf, at which point the exhibitor must throw a loop entirely over the calf’s head. The rope may tighten around any portion of the calf’s body. Time ends when the calf breaks the rope from the saddle horn. A heavy string is used to tie the rope to the saddle horn, and when the rider catches a calf, the rope breaks loose from the saddle. This is a timed event with a one-minute time limit.
Dally Team Roping
Dally Team Roping commonly known, as Team Roping is an event where two exhibitors work together to rope a steer. One exhibitor must catch the horns (heading), and the other must grab both hind legs (heeling). Only one member of the team is judged at a time, and separate events are held to judge headers and healers. The competition starts with exhibitors situated on both sides of the chute that releases the steer. Once released, the header must catch the steer by the horns or the neck and dally (tie the rope to the saddle horn). Once captured, the heading horse must set and turn the steer in a 90-degree angle and pull the steer across the pen, allowing the heeler to catch one or two
hind legs. The heeler must also dally and stretch the steer, which is the signal to end the run. The tie-down roping is judged on four different maneuvers: box and barrier, running and rating, setting and handling, and facing. Scoring will be from 0-100 with 70 denoting an average performance. Each maneuver will be scored from a +3 to -3, in ½ increments.
Barrel Racing
Exhibitors follow a course consisting of three barrels in a triangular “cloverleaf” pattern. The pattern is designed to test the speed and maneuverability of the horse. Exhibitors must cross a timer and choose either the right or the left barrel, circle it, and go to the next barrel, completing the course after circling the third barrel and running across the timer. Exhibitors are allowed to touch the barrels, but if they knock any down, a five-second penalty per dropped barrel is added to the final
time. This class is a timed event.
Pole Bending
Pole Bending consists of a series of six poles spaced 21 feet apart, which exhibitors weave through at a high rate of speed. Exhibitors must cross a timer and run to the far end of the poles, turn and weave in and out as they work their way back to the front. Horses then complete a turn around the front pole and maneuver through the series again. At the last pole, they complete that turn and race toward the finish line at full speed. The exhibitor may touch a pole with his or her hand in pole bending. If the rider intentionally altars the original course by grasping a pole, a five-second penalty for each pole grasped will be assessed. This class is a timed event.
