JUSTIN BILLINGS CONTINUES THE CONGRESS TRADITION BY MEGAN SACIA ULRICH

Reprinted from The Equine Chronicle, September/October, 2023 - www.equinechronicle.com

W

hen Justin Billings first attended the All American Quarter Horse Congress with his family in 1992 as an 11-year-old horse crazy kid, he was in awe, soaking up the sights and falling more and more in love with each step of the way in his cowboy boots. More than 30 years since that visit, he has never missed a Congress. This year, he’ll walk the grounds in his new role as the Executive Vice President of Operations for the Ohio Quarter Horse Association, making him one of the faces behind the magic the Congress has to offer. “I can still vividly recall making that first trip to the fairgrounds. I was already hooked on horses but experiencing the Congress in person solidified my love for the Quarter Horse. To think one day I would have the opportunity to serve in this capacity is very humbling,” Billings, a Columbus native, says.

Soon after that first Congress visit, Billings joined the OQHA affiliate and would serve on the youth, amateur and open boards of directors over the years. In 2017, Billings joined AQHA’s staff, eventually becoming Chief Show Officer. “AQHA gave me an incredible opportunity to interact with the membership and learn the ins and outs of managing championship events across the country,” Billings says. Still though, his roots were in Ohio, so returning home after six years in Amarillo “was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” he says. “I am honored to stand alongside such passionate people who share my commitment to the success and growth of the Congress as we write this next chapter together. Learning from Dr. Myers has just been icing on the cake.” This year’s Congress, the 56th year of the largest horse

show in the world, will be held September 26 through October 22 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus. Last year’s Congress drew 26,000 entries, more than 650,000 people and generated over $409 million for the central Ohio economy. Those same numbers are expected to be met or surpassed in 2023. Despite a new face taking the helm, exhibitors can expect the same commitment to excellence the iconic show has upheld. “The Congress holds several pillars that have contributed to its longstanding success. Exhibitors will be pleased to know that these key aspects will remain unchanged. The Congress is steeped in tradition, and its rich legacy will continue to be celebrated. Exhibitors can expect the event to honor its historical significance and maintain the essence that has made it an iconic show in the industry,” Billings says. “The Congress is known for its high standard of competition and top-tier horses and riders, which will remain unchanged, ensuring that exhibitors have the opportunity to showcase their talents in a competitive and prestigious environment.” Prior to Billings, Dr. Scott Myers, DVM and CEO of the Ohio Quarter Horse Association, served for more than 10 years as the leadership behind the event. He’s confident Billings, who also brings an exhibitor’s perspective to the role, will continue the momentum already established. “It’s exciting to pass the reins to someone who is as passionate about Congress as I am. A thoughtful succession plan has allowed Justin and I to work side by side for a full year before he officially

Jamie & Justin with Gordon Downey

Justin at the 1993 and 2002 Congress

becomes CEO on January 1, 2024. The Congress is a complex, mega-event with many parts and the transfer of knowledge is extensive so the opportunity to work with Justin for a year is invaluable,“ Myers explains. The Congress has a reputation for developing innovative programs that help exhibitors, and Myers expects Billings to continue that forward thinking by identifying and developing new programs in the future. At the 2023 Congress, Billings assures exhibitors and spectators alike that they will be welcomed to the same thrilling and memorable experience filled with world-class competition, spectacular special event performances, a vibrant trade show spread across 20 acres, and a sense of camaraderie among horse enthusiasts from around the globe–as only the largest horse show in the world can deliver. “My goal is to build on what those before me have established, honoring the rich Quarter Horse Congress legacy,” Billings says, adding that everyone involved in the production of the Congress shows an immense amount of pride in the event. “Being part of the team, you certainly sense that pride. It is truly special.” That same youngster who walked the grounds with his mouth agape years ago, though now outfitted in bigger boots, will bring with him the unmatched enthusiasm that first visit sparked. “I am consumed with all things Quarter Horse Congress and can’t help but feel a deep sense of pride just being around the team who produces this event. I carry that pride with me all year long, knowing that my hometown hosts the most iconic horse show in the world. I want to see that continue and reach as many people as possible so they too can experience the magic of the Quarter Horse Congress,” Billings says. “It’s about preserving tradition, showcasing our state, creating unforgettable experiences, and making a positive impact while celebrating the remarkable Quarter Horse breed.”

The Southern Belle Program has been a “shining star” in the Quarter Horse industry since its inception in 1994. The Southern Belle Breeders Program, as well as the Southern Belle Horse Show, experienced unprecedented growth and success due to the dedication of its founder, Connie Hill, and show manager, Chris Darnell. The support of stallion owners and the exhibitors have allowed the footprint of the Southern Belle Program to reach major shows throughout the country. In an effort to perpetuate the Southern Belle Program, and due to its strong ties with the Ohio Quarter Horse Association, administration was transitioned in late 2012. Eager to continue the tradition and partnership, OQHA gladly accepted. Chris Darnell served the Southern Belle Program, both as show secretary for the Southern Belle Invitation and the administrator of the Southern Belle Breeder’s Program. She over saw the transition, while Congress show secretary, Rhonda Harter,

lead the transition team, and is currently the direct contact for stallion owners and breeders through the OQHA office. 2023 Breeder’s Classes are open to offspring of stallions that have “SOLD” in the 2023 Southern Belle Breeder’s program. Stallions that do not sell can make their offspring eligible by paying up their breeding at 1/2 the advertised breeding fee plus $100 administrative fee. The minimum a breeding is sold for is $600 which includes the $100 administrative fee. The Southern Belle Breeder’s 3 Year Old Open Western Pleasure Futurity has an estimated purse of $35,000. The Limited division will receive 40% and the Open division 60%. This class will still run concurrently with the NSBA 3 Year Old Open Western Pleasure Futurity, but all horses must also be eligible for Southern Belle Breeder’s classes as well.

HALL

The All American Quarter Horse Congress is the world’s largest single-breed horse show. People travel from not only all across the country, but from around the world to compete at this event. Without the dedication and hard work of a few individuals, the masses would not be here. Established in 1987, the Congress Hall of Fame recognizes those individuals who dedicated their lives to helping the Congress become the success it is today. Originally, four people were inducted, but inductions do not necessarily occur every year. The OQHA’s Hall Of Fame Committee reviews potential candidates for inclusion into the Hall of Fame every year.

Paul Brown

(inducted in 1987) The late Paul Brown of Newark, Ohio served as the president of OQHA in 1972 and 1973. Brown created and developed the Congress National Youth Activity Team Tournament in 1968 and served as its first chairperson for many years. Brown worked diligently to promote the tournament among AQHA affiliates. Brown also coordinated Congress awards ceremonies for several years.

W.P. “Pete” Drake

(inducted in 1987) The late Dr. W.P. “Pete” Drake of Tucson, Ariz. (formerly of Richwood, Ohio) served as OQHA president during the first three years of the Congress, 1967-69. Dr. Drake tirelessly promoted the Congress in its early years, even keeping paperwork at his house (which filled three entire rooms before he rented office space). Later, Dr. Drake became the unofficial historian of the All American Quarter Horse Congress.

Blair Folck

(inducted in 1987) The late Blair Folck of Springfield, Ohio served as OQHA president in 1963 and 1964, as well as 1970 and 1971. Folck developed the concept of the

164

All American Quarter Horse Congress and worked with Dr. Drake during the show’s early years to promote it. He also owned National Equine Sales, the company that managed the Congress Super Sale from the first year in 1967 through 2008.

Earl Lambert

(inducted in 1987) Rounding out the first four inductees, the late Earl Lambert of Columbus, Ohio served as one of Ohio’s first show secretaries. He managed the popular Midwest Livestock Show and Rodeo in the 1950’s and 1960’s and was then recruited to become the Congress Show Secretary in its early years because of his horse show management expertise.

Bailey “Stretch” Bradley

(inducted in 1988) Bailey “Stretch” Bradley of Plain City, Ohio served as an OQHA director, and many people still remember his tall frame sitting on the tractor dragging the Coliseum dirt between classes. Bradley also showed his champion Halter horses at Congress to numerous awards.

O F FA M E Dale Wilkinson

(inducted in 1989) Dale Wilkinson of Waynesboro, Ga. (formerly of Findlay, Ohio) is also a member of the NRHA, NCHA and AQHA Hall of Fame. When the Congress began in 1967, Wilkinson created the concept for the Reining division and managed the Congress Reining events during the show’s early years.

Paul Wilt

(inducted in 1996) The late Paul Wilt of Sidney, Ohio served as OQHA president in 1995 and 1996 and held the longest term to date as a Congress TriChairman, 12 years. Throughout his years of involvement, Wilt provided a steady foundation and wise advice to all.

Keith Bradley

(inducted in 1996) Keith Bradley of Bowling Green, Ohio has been known as the “Voice of the Congress” since his smooth voice first graced the public address system in 1967. Through 2008, Bradley announced countless Congress Champions, record scores and other events, including serving as the Master of Ceremonies.

Lee Sobas

(inducted in 2001) Lee Sobas of Marysville, Ohio is the first woman inducted into the Congress Hall of Fame. She worked for the Ohio Quarter Horse Association for 27 years before retiring in 2002. Sobas served as horse show secretary and futurity secretary and she was a familiar face and a friendly voice to many horse show exhibitors in the Congress entry office.

Alan Potts

(inducted in 2002) Alan Potts of Coshocton, Ohio served as president of OQHA in 1960 and remained active with OQHA by serving on every standing committee within the association. Potts has been involved with the Congress since it began.

Beverly Grose

(inducted in 2006) Inducted posthumously, Beverly Grose of Richwood, Ohio was an employee of the Ohio Quarter Horse Association for nearly 30 years. Grose served as the OQHA membership and points secretary and worked behind the scenes at Congress with OQHA’s computer system. She was known for her caring attitude, warm smile, hard work ethic and wealth of knowledge.

165

HALL Shirley DeLorean

(inducted in 2008) Shirley DeLorean, of Medina, Ohio, was in charge of the Congress Queen Contest for more than 25 years. She also served as president of the Ohio Quarter Horse Association from 2001 to 2002, as well as several other offices throughout the years. DeLorean was described as being a true-blue friend, someone who always made everyone feel welcome.

Clark Bradley

(inducted in 2008) Clark Bradley of Findlay, Ohio comes from a family dedicated to OQHA. His father, Bailey “Stretch,” was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1996. Clark served as president of OQHA from 19992000, as well as the director representative for Reining and Roping for more than 25 years. Additionally, Clark showed at every single Congress from 1967-2021.

He has served on every Ohio Quarter Horse Association committee, including president from 1993-1994, 2005-2006 and 2009-2010. Salome’s children, Todd and Kelli and granddaughter Lauren, are also involved in OQHA as directors.

166

Denny Hales

(inducted in 2009) Denny Hales, from Zanesville, Ohio, was inducted posthumously to the Congress Hall of Fame. He served as the Congress show secretary, beginning in 1985 and continued his service to OQHA as the executive vice president for more than 20 years. Hales’ considerable contributions to OQHA and the Congress are forever remembered with the dedication of Denny Hales Arena on the Ohio Expo Center grounds, during the 2009 Congress.

Joseph “Jess” Cecil

2023 ALL AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE CONGRESS

YOUTH CONTESTS Since its first year, the All American Quarter Horse Congress has encouraged participation by future generations of the Quarter Horse industry through a variety of youth activities. Aside from competing on a horse, there are many skills professional horsemen and women must possess. These youth activities help prepare young participants for a bright future, in or out of the equine industry. For more information about these contests, please contact: Dr. Kimberly Cole at 614-292-2625 or cole.436@osu.edu.

Horse Bowl - Tuesday, October 10th - Rhodes Building

In Horse Bowl, contestants are asked to answer equine-related questions in a competitive atmosphere, reminiscent of a game show. Questions are asked in two manners: one-on-one and toss-up bonus questions. Questions involve everything from the evolution of the horse to current equine management practices and equine disease.

Communications - Tuesday, October 10th - Rhodes Building

The Congress Communications Contests were created to help develop public speaking skills and self-confidence in youth. Theses contests require contestants to craft a speech that illustrates a step-by-step procedure and explains why each step is essential to the overall product. Demonstrations go along with the speech, and include visual aids that enhance the topic discussed. Contestants’ speeches are judged on their organization, content, accuracy, stage presence, delivery and desire to communicate.

Hippology - Wednesday, October 11th - Rhodes Building

Hippology covers many of the same topics as Horse Bowl, but asks students to apply their knowledge. Points are awarded in three separate segments. The first is examination, which can include a written test, as well as slides that must be identified. The second segment requires team members to travel to different stations where they must correctly identify different equine-related items, such as types of grass or bones in the horse. The final segment requires contestants to judge four horse show classes, much like the judging contest. Once all three segments are completed, each team is given a single question to answer, which may require an impromptu answer or preparation and explanation.

Collegiate and Junior Judging Contest - Wednesday, October 11th - Coliseum Each year, students from across the country compete in the All American Quarter Horse Congress Collegiate and Youth Judging Contests. College, 4-H, FFA and Quarter Horse affiliate associations form judging teams that converge to the Congress to find out who has the best eye for horseflesh. Teams range from three to four members for youth or four to five members for intercollegiate. Teams judge both halter and performance classes. Classes can incorporate mares, stallions, or geldings and any number of performance classes, including Western Pleasure, Hunter Under Saddle, Reining, Western Riding, Hunter Hack, Pleasure Driving, Trail, Horsemanship or Equitation. Specific classes will be announced as ‘oral reasons’ classes. Oral reasons are a chance for contestant to explain their placings.

Both divisions award individual and team high-point awards in Halter, performance and oral reasons categories, as well as overall awards. Scores are determined based on the accuracy of contestants’ placings as compared to the placings of a panel of approved judges.

YOUTH DUMMY ROPING THURSDAY OCTOBER 5TH

The CINCH Dummy Roping Contest allows young cowboys and cowgirls a chance to showcase their roping skills on the big stage of a Congress show arena. Contestants are divided into two age groups: 8 & under and 9-12 years old. Contestants compete by roping a bones heel o matic. The competition begins with round one, where two loops are thrown. Contestants who catch the steer both times advance to round two, if they are 8 & under. Contestants in the 9-12 division who make it past round one advance to the next round. In the finals, a distance line is marked and increases until a winner is crowned. Horn size may also be changed to determine a winner. Three legal catches will be used in the 8 & under division. “Slick horns” only will be used for the 9-12 division. Boundary lines will be used in all rounds. Contestants may not rope the entire dummy and no fishing is allowed.

COWBOY MOUNTED SHOOTING Cowboy Mounted Shooting is the fastest growing equestrian sport in the nation. The event combines precision with speed as participants guide their horses through a designated pattern shooting two .45 caliber single-action revolvers (loaded with specially prepared blank ammunition) and attempt to shoot as many balloons as possible, all while racing against the clock. Participants are also required to dress in traditional western style clothing or a long sleeve western shirt, five pocket blue jeans covered by chaps, western boots and a cowboy hat.

Divisions

Classes are divided by age and gender, as well as by level to create a wrangler division (11 and under), men’s division, women’s division, and senior’s division, with levels 1-6 in each of those divisions. All riders begin at Level 1 and advance up through the levels by accumulating wins.

Patterns

With 50+ possible patterns, there is always something new and exciting to watch during Cowboy Mounted Shooting competition. Each pattern consists of 10 balloons, spread throughout the arena. The competitor must shoot the first five balloons before moving to the second set of five balloons (designated by different colors). The second set, called the Rundown, are usually all in a row, straight towards the finish line. The main match of this shoot has 4 stages (patterns). Stages 1 and 3 run as follows: All the Level 6s, All the Level 5s, All the Level 4s, All the Level 3s, All the Level 2s, All the Level 1s, AQHA, Wranglers Limited, Wranglers Open. Stages 2 and 4 run as follows: Wranglers Limited, Wranglers Open, All the Level 6s, All the Level 5s, All the Level 4s, All the Level 3s, All the Level 2s, All the Level 1s, AQHA.

Scoring

Competitors are scored on a combination of time and accuracy. For various mistakes, riders incur penalties: five seconds for each missed balloon, five seconds for dropping a gun, 10 seconds for not running the course

correctly and 60 seconds for falling off your horse; thus making accuracy more important than speed, especially since a typical pattern is usually run in just 15-35 seconds.

Schedule of Events Sunday, October 22nd

2023 ALL AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE CONGRESS

The All American Quarter Horse Congress would not be a success without the strong ties that exist between the Ohio Quarter Horse Association and our show partners. Together, OQHA and its show partners strive to complete the goal of promoting the American Quarter Horse breed. Their enthusiasm and dedication to not only the Quarter Horse, but to the Congress itself, is much appreciated.

AQHA

Headquartered in Amarillo, Texas, the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) maintains pedigree and registration records for more than six million registered American Quarter Horses. AQHA also oversees showing, racing and recreational activities that promote the Quarter Horse. Since 1967, AQHA has played a large role in the show, offering a full slate of AQHA-approved classes.

NRHA

The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) was formed in 1966 with the mission of promoting the sport of reining worldwide and was originally headquartered in Coshocton, Ohio. One of the NRHA’s most popular events, the NRHA Futurity, was held at the All American Quarter Horse Congress for 19 years before moving to Oklahoma City, when NRHA moved its headquarters. A full slate of NRHA-approved reining events, makes the Congress a popular show for reiners across the country.

NSBA

Promoting the pleasure horse has been the mission of the National Snaffle Bit Association (NSBA) since it was founded in 1983. To accomplish this mission, NSBA approves futurity horse show events, including dual-approval with AQHA events. Since the association’s beginnings, it has worked closely with the All American Quarter Horse Congress, which offers a full slate of NSBA approved events at the Congress.

NATIONAL YOUTH ACTIVITY TEAM TOURNAMENT

The All American Quarter Horse Congress hosts the largest National Youth Activity Team Tournament (NYATT) competition in the world. The NYATT brings together many youth from state and regional Quarter Horse association across the United States and Canada and promotes horsemanship and sportsmanship in a one-day event. Teams consist of 1-16 members and must be sponsored by a state or regional Quarter Horse association. Teams can have no more than two members compete in each of the eight NYATT classes: Barrel Racing, Horsemanship, Hunt Seat Equitation, Hunter Under Saddle, Ranch Riding, Reining, Showmanship, and Western Pleasure. Oftentimes, NYATT is so competitive that youth must fight for a spot with their association’s team in the spring. At the end of the day, contestants do not go home empty handed. Medallions are awarded to the top 15 individuals in each class, with class winners receiving the coveted Don Bell Congress bronze trophy. To determine overall team standings, points are awarded for each individual’s efforts in every class, with first place receiving 10 points, second place nine points, and so on. The 2023 NYATT competition will be held Sunday, October 15. The day will conclude with NYATT awards, where every team is recognized for the accomplishments of participating in the tournament, as well as honoring the top overall teams in each division.

2023 ALL AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE CONGRESS

Back in 2009, I remember walking into Congress Hall eager to meet all the Queens at the “Queen Meet and Greet” session with my mom and grandma. This was always the highlight of my time at Congress, seeing all the beautiful queens in their sparkly outfits and big crowns. I loved it so much that I made an entire scrapbook page with the pictures I got with all the queens, even the 2008 Congress Queen, Jessica Elsass, who now serves on the Congress Queen Committee! At nine years old, I put on that scrapbook page an arrow pointing to myself saying “Future Congress Queen.” Talk about setting your goals high! Fast forward 13 years, I chased that dream and achieved it, being crowned the 2022 All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen! That evening was hands down the best moment of my life from the crowning ceremony to my parents’ reactions to the Sweet Shop Cinnamon Roll the queen team got me after I had won. I am not sure what could beat that!

As I reflect on the most memorable year of my life, I cannot believe how fast time has gone. Time flies when you’re having fun! With the support of the Ohio Quarter Horse Association and my family, I was blessed to have the opportunity to travel coast to coast to horse shows and equine events all year long to represent the All-American Quarter Horse Congress and advocate for the Quarter Horse breed. I traveled to 20 events over the course of the year, became a professional packer and flier, and absolutely had the time of my life! I attended lots of the major championship shows including the AQHA World Show, the Level 1 East Championship Show, the Region 5 Championship Show, the Region 6 Championship Show, the AQHYA World Show, and the NSBA World Show! Being able to hand out medallions, ribbons, trophies, putting on neck ribbons, and being a small part in those exhibitors and their horses’ winning moments are some of my most cherished experiences. Every time a champion was named gave me goosebumps and sometimes even tears with the priceless reactions of the winners. I was continually impressed by the dedication, passion, and talent of the exhibitors and their quarter horses. How blessed are we to share our lives with these incredible animals?!

During my travels I also got to be featured in a Gold Globe Report interviewed by THE Courtenay DeHoff, featured on the “On the Rail” podcast, and named one of AQHA’s Emerging Young Leaders. I also had the honor

At the NSBA World Show, I had the honor to meet Will Summers, a former “12 Strong” Special Forces horse soldier and a true American hero, who was a guest of the Heroes on Horses parade and the guest speaker at their banquet. These events showcase how much pride our community has in our country, how thankful our community is for our veterans and those who are active duty, and how powerful the connection is between horse and man. Thank you to those who have served and continue to serve to protect our nation.

I also had the privilege to attend the Arizona Sun Circuit and experience the incredible scenery of Scottsdale, the amazing January weather at the Florida Gulf Coast show, and the Silver Dollar Circuit inside a hotel casino in Las Vegas. These shows are ones I may never get the chance to show at because of their

2023 ALL AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE CONGRESS One of my passions is our youth involvement in our industry. As the Pennsylvania Quarter Horse Youth Advisor and Congress Queen, I had the honor to speak at both the AQHYA Region 5 Youth Conference and the AQHYA Youth Excellence Seminar held in College Station, Texas concurrently with the Youth World Cup where I was able to meet youth from around the world! I also was able to make an appearance at the Pennsylvania 4-H State Show, and it was wonderful to see the passion these kids had for their horses. From those experiences, I can assure you that our industry and breed will be in good hands with these incredible young leaders. One of my most favorite parts of being queen was meeting all the young girls who were me 13 years ago, a young girl in awe of the Congress Queen and in love with their quarter horse. Some of my favorite memories include being a little girl’s “favorite Disney princess,” presenting awards with the Indiana Princess and the Pennsylvania Princesses, and spending the day with Aubrey from the Region 6 Championship Show and telling her ALL about queening and hearing what she is already doing to prepare for the Congress Queen contest when she is old enough to run. Inspiring these young girls to chase after their dreams is what being queen is all about.

Being the Congress Queen and having this once in a lifetime opportunity to travel the country and live my childhood dream, has made me realize how blessed and thankful I am for the people that have made this all possible. First and foremost, I need to thank my parents. Jeffrey and Denise Good, or as they are commonly referred to as Queen Mom and Dad, have always been my number one supporters. They were with me every step of the way to help carry hat boxes onto planes to sewing holes that I ripped in my skirt to carrying my heavy queen luggage to getting me late night meals to taking care of a puppy I bought spur of the moment at Congress and more… My gratitude and love for them is more than I could describe in words, and I am blessed to have been able to experience this with them by my side.

To Tiana Domingos and Morgan McCarthy-Warda Jennings, thank you for your commitment to helping me prepare for the contest. From rulebook study sessions, mock interviews, wardrobe planning (it’s all about the details!), and keeping me focused during the entire year leading up to Congress, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to win this title and have this experience without their help. I am so thankful for these ladies, and love that I was able to see them during my queen travels and even present Morgan’s first NSBA World Show Champion trophy in Amateur Pleasure Driving! To my sponsors, there are so many of you! Thank you for your generosity and commitment to the Queen Program. This wouldn’t be possible without your support. fig 13: CHASING DREAMS Kylie, OMIQHA Queen, Indiana Queen, &

2023 ALL AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE CONGRESS As I approach my last few weeks of wearing my crown and begin reflecting on this experience and what I have learned from it, I keep coming back to this quote I stumbled upon and wrote down during this past year from Brazilianborn cowboy, Filipe Masetti Leite: “The horse is a common language that brings people together.” Every horse show I visited, every stranger I met who became a friend, every connection I created, every memory I made throughout this experience is because of the horse. The American Quarter Horse. I am so proud to be a part of this community and to have been able to experience it as the All-American Quarter Horse Congress Queen. I pray that the horse continues to be the reason to bring all of us together as a family to do what we all love. It is bittersweet to finally take off my crown after five years of queening. What an era it has been! I may look different without my crown, curls, and sparkly outfits, but you will continue to see me in the show pen and at the shows. Horses are forever in my blood! Despite this being the end of an era for me, I am so excited to pass the crown to the next distinguished young lady, see how she uses this platform to make an impact, and watch her achieve her wildest dreams. To each and every person that was a part of this journey, thank you. This was the best year of my life because I got to spend it with you. Much Love,

2023 ALL AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE CONGRESS with charity groups, such as Special Olympics and handicapped riding programs.

Since 1968, young women from all over the world have made the trip to Ohio for the chance of a lifetime. Annually, affiliate Quarter Horse associations send contestants to compete at the Congress for the title of All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen. The Congress Queen serves as an ambassador of the show, welcoming spectators and exhibitors alike. In fact, the Congress Queen does so much during the show that she becomes one of the most memorable faces each year. The Queen’s reign, however, does not end on October 22nd. She makes appearances at many national events, including the AQHA Convention, AQHA World Shows and other major horse shows throughout the entire year. Aside from horse shows and AQHA events, the Congress Queen shares her love and knowledge of the American Quarter Horse with students, youth teams, 4-H and FFA groups. Past Queens have also been involved

All queen candidates that compete at Congress must represent a state, regional or provincial Quarter Horse association. Candidates compete by participating in a three-part test. The first portion, worth 40 percent of the contestant’s total score, is a written examination of the AQHA Official Handbook of Rules and Regulations. Next is an oral interview, which is also worth 40 percent. In this section, contestants are judged on their poise, appearance and personality. Finally, the last 20 percent of the competition is based on a Horsemanship pattern, in which contestants are judged by a panel of AQHA-approved judges on their performance. The goal of the Horsemanship class is to demonstrate excellent riding ability and horsemanship skills. The candidate who receives the highest overall score is crowned the All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen. The 2023 Congress Queen Contest begins on Wednesday, October 4th with a queens dinner with OQHA officials, interview judges and written exam, and oral interviews on Thursday, October 5th. The Queen’s Horsemanship class will be held on Friday, October 6th. The 2023 All American Quarter Horse Queen will be crowned Friday, October 6th in Congress Hall.

orses shown at the All American Quarter Horse Congress are the best of the best in their disciplines. Spectators are awed by the precision and flawlessness of the riders in the pattern classes, the beautiful self-carriage of the horses in the rail classes, and the excitement of the the athletes in the timed events. In an industry where specialization has become the name of the game, finding a horse that can both cross over and excel in all of those events seems next to impossible. But the first 22 horse and rider teams entered will have the opportunity to do just that with the return of the historic Congress Versatility, held as a grand finale event on the last Saturday (October 21st) of the Congress. Open to horses three years old and over, participants will com-

pete in Hunter Under Saddle, Western Pleasure, Ranch Riding, and Pole Bending. One horse may have two different riders. Between events, grooms will be welcomed into the arena to aid in a timed, five-minute tack and wardrobe change. To determine the winner, a four judge system will be used with the lowest score being dropped and Pole Bending serving as the overall tie breaker. That winner, thanks to $10,000 added money from Gerri Leigh Pratt, will walk away with a pocket full of cash. “It’s such an exciting and different class than what we normally get to watch, so it’s a lot of fun. It really shows how versatile the Quarter Horse is–that one horse can do all of these events and do them well,” Pratt says, explaining she’d been an avid supporter “back in the day” and plans to be in the stands
